Pantera to reunite for 2023 tour

Surviving members Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown sign with booking agent with a North America tour in the works – but who will play guitar?

Pantera

Pantera – one of metal’s most influential bands – are set to reunite next year for their first tour in over 20 years.

As reported by Billboard , surviving members Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown have signed with entertainment agency Artist Group International to book a string of North America dates for 2023, with Peter Pappalardo and AGI founder Dennis Arfa acting as agents.

“We are thrilled to be working with such an iconic band and bringing their music back to the fans,” says Pappalardo.

Pantera played their last show on August 26, 2001 at Yokohama’s Beast Feast festival as part of their Extreme Steel tour, having released what would be their final studio album, Reinventing the Steel , in 2000.

The band planned to continue the trek, and flew to Europe the following month. However in the wake of the September 11 attacks in 2001, the group cancelled their remaining dates. They disbanded two years later in 2003.

It’s currently unclear who will play guitar and drums for the band’s upcoming tour. Founding guitarist Dimebag Darrell was killed in a Columbus, Ohio mass shooting in 2004 while performing onstage with his band Damageplan, while his brother Vinnie Paul – who also co-founded the band – died in 2018 from natural causes including heart disease.

While Zakk Wylde has previously expressed interest if a Pantera reunion were ever to happen, Rex Brown earlier this year “guaranteed” that the Black Label Society man wouldn’t be involved.

Speaking to eonmusic , the bassist said regarding who would fill Dimebag’s spot: “It wouldn’t be Zakk Wylde. I guarantee you that. I’ve just put it out there so we can get on past it.”

Report: Pantera ‘Reunion’ Tour to Take Place in 2023

Pantera are reportedly set to head out on a "reunion" tour in 2023, according to Billboard . This would serve as the metal legends' first time playing under the Pantera name since 2001.

It's not yet known who would fill in for late guitarist Dimebag Darrell or his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul , however, Dennis Arfa and Peter Pappalardo of Artist Group International will serve as the group's agent.

“We are thrilled to be working with such an iconic band and bringing their music back to the fans,” Pappalardo said, as per the report.

No dates have been confirmed as of yet, and there aren't any posts regarding the news on any of Pantera's social media accounts, or those of surviving members Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown .

Pantera's last concert took place Aug. 26, 2001 at Japan's Beast Feast [via Setlist.fm ]. Following the dissolution of the band, Darrell and Paul went on to form Damageplan , who released one album in 2004,  New Found Power,  before Darrell was tragically killed onstage during a show later that year. Vinnie Paul eventually joined Hellyeah in 2006, and remained their drummer until he died in June of 2018.

Several fans have taken to Twitter to share their sentiments about the news. While some are ecstatic, others seem a bit torn over the idea of a tour taking place with only half of the surviving members.

"Pantera tour 2023. I will be in that fucking pit," one user wrote.

"Pantera reunion tour is a thing... man, I love that band with my whole heart, but without Dime and Vinnie I don't know," remarked another.

"They should tour as 'Phil & Rex plays Pantera,' because without Dime and Vinnie well... it is not possible."

Stay tuned as more information is revealed about who will perform alongside Brown and Anselmo, as well as when the shows are set to take place. See more reactions here .

A Pantera reunion is happening in 2023

Pantera's two surviving members, Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown, will go on tour under the Pantera banner next year

Rex Brown and Phil Anselmo on stage in 2016

Surviving Pantera members Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown are reported to be reuniting next year to tour under the Pantera banner. The tour, believed to be taking place across North America in 2023, would mark the first Pantera live shows of any kind since the band's final gig together in Yokohoma, Japan on August 26, 2001.

In a new report by Billboard , Anselmo and Brown are said to have signed with Artist Group International for the tour. Artist Group International representative Peter Pappalardo has released a statement on the reunion to Billboard , stating: "We are thrilled to be working with such an iconic band and bringing their music back to the fans."

One of the most successful metal bands of the '90s, Pantera were seemingly finished for good after the murder of guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, who was shot dead on stage at a Damageplan show in Columbus, Ohio on December 8, 2004. Abbott's brother and Pantera/Damageplan bandmate, drummer Vinnie Paul, was vocally opposed to the idea of a Pantera reunion without Dimebag involved.

"They call it a reunion for a reason," Paul told EMP Rock Invasion in 2014. "It's called bringing the original members back to what it was. So there's a lot of these things that they call reunions that aren't really reunions. They've got one dude from the band floating around in them, you know. That's not a true reunion. With Pantera, it'll never be possible."

Vinnie Paul died of dilated cardiomyopathy and coronary artery disease in 2018, leaving Anselmo and Brown as the only surviving members of the "classic" Pantera lineup.

Phil Anselmo's presence in the metal scene remains controversial after he was filmed screaming the words "white power" and giving a Nazi salute on stage at a Dimebag Darrell tribute show in January 2016. While Anselmo initially attempted to shrug the incident off as a joke based on "drinking fucking white whine" at the show, he later posted a statement in which he claimed to be "a thousand percent apologetic." He commented on the incident later that year in an interview with Decibel , stating: "That apology is there – and no, you won’t get another one ever again," before telling Rolling Stone in December: "To think that I think I’m superior to someone else because I have pale skin when I know in my heart...I think people that look through the lens of race and want to find racism will find it no matter where they’re fucking looking."

Who would replace the Abbott brothers on the 2023 Pantera tour remains to be confirmed.

Last month, PANTERA played seven shows in Mexico and South America. The band will next headline the 2023 "comeback" edition of Japan's Loud Park festival. The two-day "limited" event will take place on March 25 at Intex Osaka in Osaka and March 26 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba City near Tokyo.

Brown was forced to leave PANTERA 's Latin American tour after testing positive for COVID-19 . Filling in for him at some of the shows was CATTLE DECAPITATION bassist Derek Engemann , who also plays with Anselmo in both PHILIP H. ANSELMO & THE ILLEGALS and SCOUR .

Up until his passing, Vinnie remained on non-speaking terms with Anselmo , whom the drummer indirectly blamed for Dimebag 's death.

Vinnie Paul and Dimebag co-founded PANTERA . When PANTERA broke up in 2003, they formed DAMAGEPLAN . On December 8, 2004, while performing with DAMAGEPLAN at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio, Dimebag was shot and killed onstage by a troubled schizophrenic who believed that the members of PANTERA were stealing his thoughts.

Vinnie passed away on June 22, 2018 at his other home in Las Vegas at the age of 54. He died of dilated cardiomyopathy, an enlarged heart, as well as severe coronary artery disease. His death was the result of chronic weakening of the heart muscle — basically meaning his heart couldn't pump blood as well as a healthy heart.

Benante opened up about his participation in PANTERA 's return during a new appearance on the "Talk Is Jericho" podcast, hosted by wrestling superstar and FOZZY frontman Chris Jericho .

Charlie said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ) "I had found out [about PANTERA playing shows again] towards the end of December [2021] — maybe it was the beginning of January [of 2022] when Philip called me up — and I immediately said, 'Yup. I wanna do it.' It just felt right. For some reason, with Darrell and Vinnie being gone, I , myself, missed these songs. You can listen to 'em all you want, but I think having them being performed in front of you and being performed the right way, it really resonated with a lot of people once they really found out that this was gonna happen."

He continued: "We always joke about if THE BEATLES , if John [ Lennon ] and George [ Harrison ] had still been here, would there have been a reunion. And I think the first thing I said was it probably would have been at the first Live Aid . The thing about Vinnie and Dime not being here anymore, and Philip and Rex are here, I think those guys felt, 'I wanna go play my songs again too.'"

Benante went to say that he knows "that there's die-hard fans who have their issues with" him, Wylde , Anselmo and Brown performing under the PANTERA name, "but for me and Zakk , we're just honoring our friends, to be honest with you. That's what we're doing," he explained. "And that's it. I enjoy playing these songs. When I look down at the setlist and I see the next song coming, man, I get so excited. So, for me, it's so great to be doing this. And seeing the reaction… I mean, you saw the videos [from the shows in Mexico and South America]. The people are just loving it. So why would you even be so negative about something when you see how much fun people are having and the joy that it's bringing? … We couldn't even ourselves; that's how loud it was. It was so loud. I've said this with ANTHRAX too, when we've come down [to South America], that sometimes you just wanna stop playing and just take it all in. And that's one thing that the fans in Chile, you didn't see a lot of [people holding up their phones and filming the show]. You just saw them in the moment enjoying it. And that was one thing that I was just applauding."

According to Charlie , "celebration" is the best way to describe what the new PANTERA lineup is trying to accomplish by bringing the music back to the live stages across the world. "I think that's the most accurate word you can use for this thing, because it is a celebration of the music and the vibe that these guys created," he said. " Vinnie and Dime would be all for it. And I know there were issues with those guys in the past, but, man, it's 2022 now. You can't hold on to grudges all your life. You've gotta let shit go and you have to just say, 'I'm gonna enjoy this. I wanna hear 'Cowboys From Hell' again. I wanna hear 'I'm Broken' .' That's it. Just come out and celebrate it."

As for all the naysayers, Benante added: "I did say something about two or three weeks ago about how I thought it was disrespectful for people to say the things that they were saying, because I felt that Vinnie and Dime , if it was the opposite way, they would be probably doing this too, 'cause they'd want their music to live on. That's the thing, because there's two generations who never have seen PANTERA . And this isn't the PANTERA that started this whole thing… Yes, it's Philip and Rex , and it's myself and Zakk who are filling in for Darrell and Vinnie . And we're just trying to play these songs as best as we possibly could play them."

Surviving Pantera Members Reportedly Plotting 2023 Tour

The surviving members of Pantera are reportedly plotting a 2023 tour.

According to Billboard , singer Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown have hired Artist Group International to book the tour. "We are thrilled to be working with such an iconic band and bringing their music back to fans," said agent Peter Pappalardo.

Crucially, the article notes that there is no word on who will replace the other half of the band's classic lineup, the late Abbott brothers. Guitarist Dimebag Darrell was murdered onstage with Damageplan in 2004 , and drummer Vinnie Paul died in 2018 .

Pantera's last show took place on Aug. 26, 2001 in Yokohama, Japan. Dimebag announced the group's breakup in November 2003, blaming Anselmo for prioritizing side projects such as Down and Superjoint Ritual over their work together. "Nobody would return our calls so me and Vinnie just sat at home not knowing what the fuck was going on," he told Rock Sound (as reported by Blabbermouth .)

In recent years Anselmo has been performing sets exclusively comprised of Pantera songs with his backing band the Illegals. "I always play a couple of Pantera songs here and there, and that's fine," he told Revolver (as transcribed by Blabbermouth ) in 2021. "When we started doing this, it was right after Vince passed. And it was a tough decision...we're never going to be another Pantera, but we can give it a spirited go and do the best we can and really encourage the audience to celebrate with us."

While appearing on the Inside with Paulo Baron podcast (as reported by Metal Injection ) that same year, Anselmo said a Pantera reunion featuring himself and Brown was a possibility. "I think Rex sees what I'm doing with the Illegals and he likes it, you know? The more I keep Pantera alive, that's good for him too."

Brown was also a member of Down alongside Anselmo from 1999 until 2011, appearing on 2002's Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow and 2007's Down III: Over the Under albums.

Dimebag Darrell's close friend Zakk Wylde has been widely rumored as the lead replacement guitarist candidate for any potential Pantera reunion, but in a 2021 interview with Eon Music Brown said, "It's going to come up, and it wouldn't be Zakk Wylde, I guarantee you that. I've just put it out there so we can get on past it."
