Orchid announce 2024 dates, first shows in over 20 years

The Amherst, Massachusetts screamo/hardcore band Orchid hung it up back in 2002 after releasing 2 albums, Chaos Is Me (1999) &   Gatefold (2002) through Ebullition as well as a list of EPs, splits, and a few 7"s. Orchid haven't been seen in over twenty years but that all just changed. 

Today saw the band announce a fistful of shows scattered throughout the North East. Calling it "The Doom Loop Tour", the quartet plans to perform in Boston, MA, Philadelphia, PA, Toronto, ON, and two nights in Brooklyn, NY.

Tickets for the dates go on sale this Friday, December 8th, here .

Five friends in a room playing the music they created together stepping on stage for the first time in over two decades. Tickets for Boston, NYC and Philadelphia on sale Friday. Toronto tickets on sale today. "like anywhere else there are no coincidences, probability makes for accomplices and change creates meaning."

Orchid Isle Orchestra to perform free concert Sunday

Orchid Isle Orchestra performs “Free and Happy” at 4 p.m. Sunday in the Waiakea High School Band Room.

OIO is a community orchestra dedicated to teaching and nurturing musicians of all ages.

The public is invited to this free (and happy) concert.

Highlights include a world premiere orchestral work by OIO’s resident conductor David MacKenzie, music from the Bach Double Violin Concerto, a Brahms Scherzo that inspired the concert’s theme, “Fantasy on Aloha ‘Oe” by Brian Balmages, an arrangement of Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” (from “Despicable Me 2”), music inspired by Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” and concert-opening music performed by Young Music Studio students (more Bach and Brahms).

The two Bach Double violin soloists are Yuma Kamuro and Joanna Coates.

Yuma is a sophomore at Waiakea High School, and has studied violin for six years. Joanna is 13 and enjoys fantasy novels when she’s not playing violin or busy with her seventh-grade curriculum as a home-school student.

Maestro MacKenzie had OIO players in mind when he composed “Sometimes Leaping, Sometimes Dancing.”

The movement is part of a larger suite, still in progress. Featured in the music are pianist Walter Greenwood (OIO’s assistant conductor and president), plus two percussionists, Keira Ida Ayu from Waiakea High School and Ilana Moidel Acevedo.

The 27th annual joint orchid exhibit between the United States Botanic Garden (USBG) and Smithsonian Gardens is “Discover the World of Orchids,” on display in the USBG Conservatory from February 17 through April 30, 2023. The exhibit shares stories of the diversity of orchids and how technology advances their conservation.

One of the largest plant families in the world, orchid shapes, sizes, colors, and scents vary greatly! Throughout the Conservatory, thousands of orchid blooms showcase the USBG and Smithsonian Gardens’ extensive orchid collections. From growing orchids via tissue culture to tools that let us see the hidden parts of orchid lives, technological advancement has changed our relationship with orchids over time. Come explore stories of how technology contributes to how we conserve, grow, and understand orchids. 

In the Tropics house, hundreds of orchids will provide vibrant bursts of color at ground level and suspended in the air, and two 9-foot-tall tree sculptures covered with hundreds of epiphytic orchids will be a colorful photo opportunity. Visitors will find  Dendrobium  and  Paphiopedilum  orchids throughout the Plant Adaptations and Plant Conservation houses, including large, 8-foot-high curtains of orchids. A special display showcasing pollination and pollinators will feature showy slipper orchids and strikingly fragrant  Bulbophyllum  orchids.

The Garden will offer orchid-themed educational opportunities including online programs about orchid care and cultivation, lectures on orchid conservation, in-person experts answering visitors’ orchid questions, and more. 

The gift shop offered by Friends of the U.S. Botanic Garden and ReWild will feature offerings such as live orchid plants and other educational and botanical gift items and will be open daily in the Conservatory.
