JB Day Trip Itinerary — Where to Eat, Play and Shop Under S$70

one day trip to jb

Go beyond your typical JB day trip to KSL and City Square while sticking to a friendly budget!

First published: 5 July 2022

Many of us head to Johor Bahru (JB) for one of two reasons: to shop or to cafe-hop. After all, cheap shopping steals are all there is to JB right? — Not exactly.

Pasar Karat JB Bazaar Outside KSL - Johor Day Trip

It’s true that prices are cheaper across the Causeway, but there’s so much more to eat, play and shop in JB than just shopping malls or aesthetic cafes.

Apart from your familiar hot spots, this adventurous itinerary will show you how to zhng your JB day trip with panoramic skyline views, a bustling night market, and an exciting pop-up theme park.

Plus, you don’t have to spend much to enjoy these cool experiences at all!

JB Day Pre-trip Essentials

Friends together at Skyscape - Johor Day Trip

Before anything, you might want to secure some things for a hassle-free experience.

Connectivity: We booked a 4G eSIM Card, just enough for one day ( ~S$9 for 2.5GB/5 days via Klook)

Activities: Pre-purchase your tickets online for cheaper prices. For instance, we bought our tickets to Skyscape (also via Klook ) and saved ~S$4/adult.

*Pro-tip: Use the code <THETRAVELINTERN> on Klook to get 5% off all activities with a min. spend of S$50 (discount cap at S$15). Apply the promo code when you checkout. One-time use only!

Cash: Cards are accepted in malls and cafes, but not at traditional stalls like Salahuddin or the night market. Hence, we recommend changing cash for the trip. When paying for bigger ticket items in shopping malls, use multi-currency cards like YouTrip or Revolut to avoid lousy exchange rates.

Transportation: We have a dedicated section for getting around JB later on, but you might want to download Grab as it may be the cheaper option for groups. For instance, the bus to KSL from Customs costs RM2/pax but a Grab that can take four people costs RM5.

If you’re exploring regions beyond JB, then you might want to take a look at Klook’s All-in-One Value Pack for Malaysia . It’ll give you discount vouchers for activities, SIM cards, airport transfers, etc. You can save up to ~S$95 when you use all the vouchers included in the pack!

Budget Breakdown for JB Day Trip

Transport: S$7.28 Activities: S$26.38 Miscellaneous: S$35.32 Total:  S$68.97

(detailed breakdown for 1 pax here)

Getting to and around Johor Bahru (JB)

Johor Train - Johor Day Trip

There are three options to get to Johor Bahru via public transport: 1) Train from Woodlands Train Checkpoint (S$5 to JB and RM5 to SG) 2) Bus 160/170 from Opposite Kranji MRT Station , or Bus 170X from Kranji Station (S$1.25/ one-way journey) 3) Grab Bus from various locations like Changi Airport, Expo MRT, Marsiling MRT and more (from S$3 to S$11 per person)

The train ride is a more comfortable option at only S$5/one-way trip (S$5 to JB and RM5 to SG), without having to squeeze compared to the bus.

*Pro-tip: Pre-book your train tickets as seats get sold out quickly.

Meanwhile, public buses offer the flexibility of time without having to rush for your ride. At Kranji Station , all three buses to JB arrive every 15-20 mins (depending on road conditions). Or book a bus on the Grab app to secure a seat and ride in comfort!

You’ll have to alight at the Woodlands Checkpoint for immigration, before continuing your journey across the Causeway to Malaysia’s checkpoint.

A fuss-free option for groups of four (or more) is to share a one-way car transfer between Singapore and JB. There are car options that even seat up to 9 pax! You won’t need to alight at both checkpoints, and you can choose pick-up / drop-off points that suit your itinerary.

Opposite kranji mrt bus stop - JOhor Day Trip

When travelling around Johor for a day trip, Grab is an affordable and convenient option even for those on a budget. From Customs, a ride to KSL Mall costs about RM5, while further places like the Euro Fun Park cost only RM24.

To book a Grab, you’ll need to buy data for your day trip. Check out prices for data roaming with your service provider. Or, book a  4GB eSIM  (~S$9) via Klook.

9AM: Breakfast at Jalan Tan Hiok Nee

A short 15-minute walk from Customs, you’ll find the heritage street of Jalan Tan Hiok Nee . With various old-school eats and plenty of aesthetic cafes, Tan Hiok Nee is home to both the “old” and the “new” where trends and tradition co-exist.

Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory

People queueing at Hiap Joo Bakery - Johor Day Trip

Be prepared to queue.

When visiting the Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory , you’ll probably find yourself in a long snaking line with people eager to get their hands on their delicious, fragrant banana cake.

While Hiap Joo Bakery does export its banana cakes to Singapore, the cheaper prices and joy of savouring these cakes fresh out of the oven are worth the trip down. Each box comes with 10 slices of cake, just enough to bring some home to your family!

Cost: RM12/box (~S$3.50) Opening hours: 7:30AM – 4:30PM, closed on Sun How to get there: 15min walk from JB CIQ Checkpoint ( Google Maps )

Restoran Hua Mui

Restoran Hua Mui Entrance - Johor Day Trip

Another great breakfast place to visit before cafes open at 10AM is the open-air eatery, Restoran Hua Mui .

Their signature Hainanese Chicken Chop (RM18.90) is what most people go here for, while their toasts and sandwiches are also available if you’re looking for something lighter.

Friends having breakfast at Restoran Hua Mui - Things to do in JB

We tried some interesting drinks that you won’t encounter much in Singapore, like the Kopi Gu You — coffee with butter (RM3.80) and the Three Layer Milk Tea, also known as the Milk Kopi (RM6.90).

Opening hours: 8AM – 5PM How to get there: 1min walk from Hiap Joo Bakery ( Google Maps )

Salahuddin Bakery

Salahuddin bakery pastries - Johor Day Trip

Salahuddin Bakery is one of JB’s oldest eateries and feels much like a living museum. Since opening back in 1937, they have retained their rustic and antique decor with Peranakan tiles, complete with old-school signages and calendars.

Salahuddin Bakery Oven - Johor Day Trip

Traditional bakes and pastries sold here include bread, cakes, and curry puffs — all baked in an old wood-fired oven. We tried the Karipap Ayam (RM3.50) and Sugar Puff (RM2), which is a good try if you like flaky and crumbly pastries!

Opening hours: 9AM – 6PM, closed on Fri How to get there: 2min walk from Restoran Hua Mui ( Google Maps )

11AM: Hunt for Instagrammable Street Art

Girl posing at Jalan Tan Hiok Nee street art - JB Day Trip

Before the midday sun hits, take a stroll around Jalan Tan Hiok Nee and its nearby streets. You’ll find vibrant street art and olden architecture that make for good outdoor photo spots!

There are several interesting murals and painted pillars along Jalan Trus and Jalan Ibrahim as well. We saw a large dugong on the side of a building along Jalan Ibrahim! Let us know in the comments if you spot any, and where 🕵️

12PM: Cafe-hopping

The Replacement Cafe - Things to do in JB

Trust us when we say that Jalan Tan Hiok Nee has plenty of cafes — we saw about 10 cafes within a short 15-minute walk around the neighbourhood.

The well-known ones here are The Replacement – Lodge & Kitchen , Chaiwalla & Co. Container Cafe or Flowers in the Window . But here are a few more to check out:

Bev C’afe

Friends at Bev C'afe - Things to do in JB

With rustic, woody interiors, Bev C’afe is relatively small but cosy. According to their menu, they serve what they like to eat! We found unique creations such as the Jackfruit Cheesecake (RM10) and Leicha Cake (RM16).

Food items at Bev C'afe - Things to do in JB

The Jackfruit Cheesecake is an interesting try, albeit a little tiny. The strong scent of jackfruit didn’t overpower the taste of the cake — overall, it produced a delicious but balanced flavour. The Citrus Honey Lemon Soda (RM14) also paired well with it and makes for a refreshing finish.

The cafe is located on the second floor, above the Bev C concept store .

Opening hours: 10AM – 6PM, closed on Wed How to get there: 1min walk from Salahuddin Bakery ( Google Maps )

Interior of Offee Cafe - Things to do in JB

Recommended by the staff at a now defunct gallery nearby, Offee Cafe boasts a sleek, white modern interior.

One can probably guess what it’s known for — yes, coffee! ☕️ They serve interesting creations including the Coconut Latte (RM12) and Oat Latte (RM12).

Friends drinking coffee at Offee Cafe - Johor Day Trip

While I’m more of a tea person, coffee lovers Shai and Bren gave the cafe and its coffee an 8/10 for its taste and ambience.

Opening hours: 8AM – 12AM How to get there: 1min walk from Bev C’afe ( Google Maps )

Bonus: Principle Cafe by T.A.M. (Jalan Trus)

Principle Cafe by T.A.M. at Jalan Trus - JB Day Trip

Special mention goes to Principle Cafe at Jalan Trus . It’s a 10-minute walk from Bev C’afe and Offee Cafe, but only a stone’s throw from our next stop in this JB itinerary.

The menu is pretty extensive, serving up breakfast items, pizzas, pastas, and a variety of cakes and tarts. We tried their Hojicha Terrine Tart (RM13) which had an intense hojicha taste and was ✨not too sweet ✨.

Hojicha Terrine Tart and coffee at Principle Cafe at Jalan Trus - JB Day Trip

Not gonna lie — prices are slightly higher than average, but worth it for the quality of its dishes and all-around zen vibes. Plus, you can now pre-purchase dining vouchers via Klook to save up to 20% off your bill!

Opening hours: 8:30AM – 6PM How to get there: 11min walk from Offee Cafe ( Google Maps )

2PM: Panoramic Skyline Views at Skyscape

Girl overlooking scenery at Skyscape - Johor Day Trip

Skyscape is most famous for the glass-floored sky bridge located on the 33rd floor.

At 149m above ground, the translucent glass floor may be challenging for people with acrophobia (fear of heights) — although Bren took it alright! Here, we enjoyed a panoramic overview of Johor Bahru and the Causeway bridge.

Friends looking at scenery at Skyscape - Things to do in Johor Bahru

Skyscape also offers complimentary activities included in your ticket, like virtual reality games, access to the observation deck, and the TikTok-famous LED tunnel amongst others.

We pre-booked our Skyscape adventure through Klook , so that all we had to do was have our QR code scanned at the entrance.

Cost: ~S$10.30/pax , RM5 (~S$1.50) for shoe covers (paid on site) Opening hours: 9:30AM – 5:30PM, last entry at 4PM How to get there: 5min walk from Principle Cafe ( Google Maps )

3PM: Shop Near KSL City Mall

KSL City Mall is no stranger to most Singaporeans; it’s easily accessible via Grab or by a feeder bus at Customs. You’re guaranteed to have something to do here as they have many establishments like KTVs, massage parlours, and shopping options.

But other than shopping inside the mall, step outside and you’ll find new interesting places to explore.

Avery-Day Convenience Concept Store

Avery Day Convenience Store Entrance - Things to do in Johor Bahru

For all snack-lovers like myself, this unique convenience concept store could most probably make for your dream snack heaven 😍

Located outside KSL City Mall at the CBTL entrance, Avery Day sells snacks from various countries: Thailand, Taiwan, China, Korea, Japan… you name it. We recognised some familiar snacks but bought those that are less commonly found in SG.

Yoghurt Bottles - Things to do in Johor Bahru

For example, this Taiwanese yoghurt drink (RM9.90) caught our eyes as it came in the shape of a milk bottle. We can’t remember the last time we drank from milk bottles but we decided to try it once again that day.

It did feel weird drinking from a teat, but the yoghurt was tangy and refreshing.

Snacks at Avery Day - Things to do in Johor Bahru

Hot snacks like fried chicken, fries, and nuggets are also available. After you’ve done your shopping, you can enjoy your snacks at the outdoor sitting area on the second floor!

Opening hours: 9AM – 12AM How to get there: ~8min taxi/Grab ride from Skyscape ( Google Maps )

Pasar Karat

Pasar Karat Night Market - Johor Day Trip

Take a step out of Avery Day and join the crowds at Pasar Karat . It’s a night market that stretches a few hundred metres down the street and will probably take a good 30 minutes to walk down the entire lane.

Pasar Karat JB Bazaar Chendol - Things to do in Johor Bahru

There were many stalls selling local delights such as fried carrot cake, Assam laksa, BBQ skewers, chendol (iced green jelly dessert) — we were absolutely spoilt for choice. We had a great dinner snacking on a little bit of everything.

Some stalls also sold everyday items like nail cutters, fire starters, and water bottles that make for good souvenirs to bring home.

Entrance fee: Free Opening hours: 6PM – 2AM, closed on Mon How to get there: 15min taxi/Grab ride from Avery Day ( Google Maps )

7PM: Pop-up theme park at Euro Fun Park

Euro Fun Park Entrance - Johor Day Trip

To end off the night with a bang, visit Euro Fun Park , a pop-up theme park!

The rides here are pretty thrilling — I dare say they’re better than your typical neighbourhood fairs. Our top choices were definitely the Vortex and Space Flyer.

Space Flyer Euro Fun Park - Johor Bahru Day Trip

The Vortex takes you cartwheeling high up into the air while you spin around endlessly for a fun yet dizzy experience. The Space Flyer takes the usual spinning chair carnival ride but goes up high to 30m in height.

Euro Fun Park Ferris Wheel - Things to do in Johor Bahru

Rides are paid in tokens (RM2 each). For instance, the Vortex requires 15 tokens while the Space Flyer requires 10 tokens.

Entrance fee: RM5 (excl. cost of rides) Opening hours: 7PM – 12AM

*Note: The theme park occasionally shifts around to different locations in Malaysia. Check their website for updates before you go!

Planning your Budget JB Day Trip

Outside Offee Cafe - Things to do in Johor Bahru

A day trip to JB can be lighter on the pocket if you plan ahead! That means pre-booking activities that you want to do, having your multi-currency cards ready, and planning which transportation to use. That way, you’ll have more money for the fun stuff like shopping and cafe-hopping!

And don’t forget to check out Klook’s Great JB Getaway Page for special deals on food and activity bookings!

Kam Long Fish Head Soup - JB Itinerary

Save on cafe-hopping with discounted dining vouchers or skip the queue for popular food spots like Kam Long Ah Zai Curry Fish Head 💁🏻‍♀️ There are options for the Signature Curry Fish Head or Fish Tail (meat only), in S/M/L portions that serve up to six pax!

Johor Bahru Streets - Things to do in JB

I’ve been guilty of sticking to shopping malls on my usual visits to Johor Bahru (thank the weather 🥵), but this day trip to JB got me wanting to explore more of the city’s not-so-hidden gems that I’ve long overlooked.

One such area is Taman Mount Austin, a 20 to 30-minute drive from the JB City Centre. Aside from aesthetic cafes , there are interesting activity centres and craft workshops where you can tuft your own rugs or try your hand at decoden . Check out our 3D2N JB Itinerary for more things to do on a weekend trip!

And for food that is near Legoland Malaysia, might I suggest Gelang Patah for the seafood or Bukit Indah for a dose of international flavours?

  • Desaru Fruit Farm (Farm Tour/ Mini Zoo/ Bee Talk / Go-Kart) (Most Recommended)
  • Desaru Coast Adventure Water Park (Southeast Asia Largest Wave Pools)
  • Desaru Ostrich Farm (Biggest Ostrich Farms In Malaysia)

Connected by two bridges with Singapore, Johor Bahru, also known as JB, is the second-largest city in Malaysia. Boasting 16 million annual tourist visits, its many towns are a melting pot of culture that is bound to have you experiencing Malaysia’s unique diversity. A day trip to JB lets you discover plenty of hidden gems!

Journey To Johor Bahru

Day Trip To JB: What to see, do and eat

Grab a train from the Woodlands Train Checkpoint to JB for SGD5. The first train departs from Singapore at 8.30am, which arrives at JB Sentral (directly linked to City Square Mall) in only five minutes! Be sure to book your tickets in advance as they sell out fast.

There are several bus options to select from when heading to Woodlands Customs. The most convenient would be taking SMRT 950 from Woodlands Temporary Bus Interchange, or SBS Transit 170X or Malaysia-operated CW1 from Kranji MRT station. Bus services start as early as 4.30am in Singapore. From the JB checkpoint, the last CW1 departs close to 11pm (timings differ on Sundays and Public Holidays). At JB Sentral, you can take the last 170X at 12am. 950 departs from Woodlands at 11.30pm and should arrive at JB Sentral 10 to 20 minutes later to pick up the final passengers for the night. To be safe, always check the timings beforehand and arrive early so that you don’t miss the bus.

Hiring a cross border taxi from Singapore-Johor Taxi Operators’ Association is an accessible option costing between SGD12 and SGD48. One downside is that it will not take passengers any further than JB Larkin Sentral bus and taxi terminal, so you would need to arrange your own transport to your destination thereafter.

Just a stone’s throw away from Singapore, driving is often preferred by most car owners. With mobile data and GPS at hand, you can breeze through from one location to another. Be sure to leave early to avoid the jam at immigration.

Fly to Kuala Lumpur from Singapore before heading to Johor Bahru today!

The easiest way to get around JB is driving. If not a self-driver, hitching a ride using Grab and Uber is an affordable alternative. From the JB Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (CIQ) First Link, all locations mentioned below will take no more than a 30-minute ride. Note that although a Malaysian phone number is not required for these e-hailing services, ensure to have internet connection to make bookings and calls.

Alternatively, you could grab one of the many buses available throughout JB, especially from JB Sentral itself.

Amp the young ones up for what’s to come with activities at the Angry Birds Activity Park located on Level 3 of Komtar Mall. The mall lies opposite the CIQ, and is connected to City Square Mall via a link bridge for easy access.

Open at 10am, the attractions, which include an indoor obstacle course, trampoline and go-kart track will surely occupy the little ones till the temporary closing time at 1pm.

A standard single entry ticket, which gives a three-hour access to the park, is listed at RM75 (SGD25) on their website. Keep a lookout for offers and promotions as prices of entry tickets can vary drastically.

Before or after having lunch around Komtar Mall, book a 20-minute Uber/Grab ride to Aeon Mall Tebrau City. You could also take 41, 188, 205, 808, BET2 or S&S 1 from JB Sentral bus terminal to Jalan Pandan, outside of the mall for approximately RM2.50 (SGD0.80).

Then head up to FANPEKKA at Level 2!

The conceptual theme park will have your kids unleash their creativity at various play stations, such as the Arts and Crafts workshop and role-playing sessions at Leikkimokki.

Wrap the day up with a trip to Austin Heights Water and Adventure Park . Just a 10-minute drive from Aeon Tebrau, this adventure park in JB has many attractions conveniently housed under one roof.

From ice skating rinks to go-kart tracks and water parks, every child will get their fill of fun till closing time at 6pm.

2. Activities For An Action-Packed Day - The Adventurer’s Itinerary

One’s definition of adventure changes with age, so explore your boundaries with these challenging yet rewarding activities.

Kick-start your day trip to JB by testing your wits and reflexes with a competitive game of laser tag ! Located on the 4th floor of City Square Mall, Laser Battle uses the most advanced technology to give you an exhilarating combat lasting for 10 to 30 minutes in the arena.

Prices vary during weekdays and weekends but should not cost more than RM50 (SGD17) for three games per pax. From over 40 game modes to choose from, it is a great activity for everyone. Up the ante with a stealthy game of Midnight Madness where the arena turns pitch black and you will not know the whereabouts of your competitors or teammates.

Laser Battle opens at 10am, so be sure to grab a quick bite before partaking in this high-intensity activity. Kimdo BBQ on Level 3 of City Square Mall, right by Uniqlo, is a great place for a snack. From chicken wings to oyster mushrooms, each stick would cost you anywhere between RM1.50 and RM5 (less than SGD1.70). Be sure to add their speciality green chilli for an extra kick!

Soar to greater heights next thing in the morning! From City Square Mall, grab a 17-minute ride to Aeon Mall Tebrau City. Located at Level 1, Rocky Base Camp (RBC) is the first indoor climbing centre in Malaysia.

From their Ninja Warrior Obstacles to Speed Climbing Walls, challenge seekers will not be disappointed. Younger ones from the age of four can try their hands at the Fun or Low Height Climbing Walls. Open at 10am, and RBC has a range of passes priced from RM23 to RM72 (not more than SGD25). A two hour-pass should suffice but one-day passes are also available.

Grab something to eat in the many food places located within AEON Tebrau City. Housing Nandos, Zen Taiwanese Restaurant and more, fuel up before the next adventure!

With your muscles all warmed up, are you ready to take things up a notch? Use the skills picked up at Laser Battle at the next stop: OLA Park!

A short drive from Aeon Tebrau City, AOV paintball trading boasts a 20-acre field. With up to 15 packages comprising paintball, archery, bubble ball and other sporty challenges, adrenaline junkies are sure to get their fix.

A two-hour paintball session that comes with necessary safety gear and play equipment will cost about RM149 (under SGD50) per person. All you need is a team of four players, and let the games begin!

Should challenges at OLA Park be put on hold due to unforeseen weather, head over to LOST in JB. A 7-minute drive away from AEON Tebrau City, you can solve thrilling puzzles in an escape room set against realistic storylines that are sure to intrigue the minds.

Depending on the number of players for each session (and time left to spare for your trip), you can choose from the eight escape rooms available. Horror fans can book the Annabelle game room for an hour or a visit a crime scene for two hours in The Tenant Upstairs.

Upon breaking free, roam around the rows of hip food spots at Taman Mount Austin for refreshments.

With the sun slowly setting, head back to AEON Mall Tebrau City Mall and catch a movie at Beanieplex on Level 2. One of the first in Malaysia, this innovative concept lets movie-goers lounge comfortably in bed-sized bean bags while they enjoy a film. Choose from a featured selection of movies and revel in the luxurious ambience.

Note that tickets have to be purchased in pairs even if you are going solo. Nonetheless, this unique experience should not cost more than RM59 (SGD20).

What better way to end a day trip to JB than to spend it at the largest funfair carnival in Malaysia? Held near AEON Tebrau City, Euro Fun Park opens at 7pm and closes at midnight.

Day Trip To JB: What to see, do and eat

With over 15 attractions, from kiddie rides to ones for the thrill-seekers, everyone can get their dose of fun. To get your adrenaline pumping, try Frightmare, Challenger and Sky Rider.

3. Eat To Your Hearts’ Content - The Foodie’s Itinerary

East of City Square Mall, Taman Desa Tebrau and Taman Mount Austin are both a café hoppers’ paradise and a place for the gastronomically adventurous.

The best way to Taman Mount Austin is to take a 20-minute car ride from CIQ. Once there, fuel up while venturing these Instaworthy spots:

Open as early as 8.30am, Atlas Coffee Embassy will serve you your early morning caffeine fix prepared by a three-times latte art champion barista. To complement the coffee, build a Big Breakfast, or grab their speciality French Toast served with caramelised bananas!

Open at noon, and just a two-minute walk away from Atlas, is the Disney-inspired café. As its name suggests, visitors can partake in the escape room games available while munching on salted egg buttercream french fries for RM10 (SGD3.40).

To combat the tropical weather, grab a signature ice cream at RM10.50 (SGD3.60) from Sangkaya which is only a 10-minute walk away. Opt for their creamy coconut and complimentary Thai milk tea ice cream. Sprinkle the toppings before taking a snap for the gram! Then chow down on the coconut flesh as you wander the streets of Taman Mount Austin.

Be sure to whip your cameras out because this floral-themed café will leave you in awe of its beauty. Not just the ambience, but the food served has an interesting flare too! From their floral teas, rice bowls with beef tongue and cloud-like souffle pancakes, everything will have you filling your Instagram feed.

Take a long 20-minute stroll to the last and final spot and prep for a completely different view. Not to miss when in JB is the Tebrau Food Truck Park that opens at 6.30pm. With more than 10 food trucks occupying the perimeter of the vicinity, there is something for everyone. With different trucks setting up every night, you’ll always be in for a surprise. Pizza? Nasi Ganja? Deep-fried banana fritters? You name it, they’ll probably have it.

4. Shop Till You Drop - The Shopper’s Itinerary

A 27-minute drive from CIQ will take you to Johor Premium Outlets, the size of 30 football fields. Every nook and cranny is occupied by the 130 designer and high-street outlets. From Michael Kors to Topshop, purchase off-season branded goods with discounts up to 80%. If you plan to spend the entire day here, book a day trip to JB premium outlets.

Day Trip To JB: What to see, do and eat

Just 17 minutes away from the first location is one of JB’s largest shopping malls. Housing mid-market international brands, a nine-screen movie theatre, ice skating rink and more, this mall caters to everyone.

From Paradigm mall, head over to KSL within 12 minutes and pamper yourself! Get an express gel manicure from RM45 (SGD15.10) at Young Waxing & Nails. From all the shopping, give your tired feet a break for 30 minutes at Thai Odyssey for RM67 (SGD22.50) or unwind and get a full-body Thai massage for RM125 (SGD42). Continue your shopping spree at the variety of push carts for a cheap deal.

Finally, return to the place where it all started. Nine minutes away from KSL is City Square Mall and Komtar JBCC. One can easily spend an entire day making trips back and forth these two famous malls in JB. City Square Mall has more food options, ranging from the familiar Seoul Garden to Gong Cha. Be sure to grab a pizza from Pizza Hut for only RM5 (SGD1.70) before heading back to Singapore!

As mentioned, City Square Mall is directly linked to Komtar JBCC via a short bridge (accessible via Level 3). A better spot to shop for souvenirs and clothes, drop by Sephora, Bath and Body Works Marks and Spencer.

8 fun things to do in JB on a day trip

From a Singaporean who goes to JB every other weekend.

I love going to Johor Bahru (JB). I mean, who doesn’t? It’s affordable, it’s good, and you can do almost everything and anything you want for less compared to Singapore.

As someone who frequently crosses the border for food, entertainment, shopping and massages, I feel the need to share my top 8 most fun things to do in JB on a day trip with other Singaporeans (hence this post).

Options for getting into JB

If you drive: Check Motorist.sg for live traffic camera feed at Woodlands Checkpoint before entering.

If you’re taking public transport: The jam can be a turn-off, especially on weekends. Here are some hacks I’ve discovered over my many years of crossing the border.

  • Option 1: Consider walking across the border (yes, walking) when the jam gets really bad. I’ve done it before and it took me only about 30 minutes.
  • Option 2: Pay someone off (unofficially) to take you across the border.

Usually, public buses will take the bus lane, so it’s not that bad of a jam compared to driving. But I know, sometimes upon exiting Singapore immigration, you’ll get a shock at how loooong the queue is for the SBS bus into JB.

Now, don’t queue. Instead, walk over to the private bus bay. You may notice several blue buses called “Bas Pekerja”, which essentially means “employee” or “worker” bus. They ferry Malaysian workers back and forth daily. Simply get on it, and ask the driver if they’re okay with you hitching a ride to Malaysia Customs (usually they’re agreeable). Upon getting down, pay around 2 to 3RM directly to the driver.

8 Fun Things To Do in JB on a Day Trip (2024)

1. brunch at kopilicious .

one day trip to jb

After makan-ing (eating) at many restaurants and coffee shops in Malaysia, my favourite go-to for breakfast or brunch is Kopilicious, which has two branches in JB.

The Taman Sentosa branch is an eight minute drive from the customs, while the Taman Molek branch is 16 minutes away.

What you should eat and drink: Their signature cold coffee (3.50RM) and mee siam rendang (12.50RM).

Now, I’m not exactly a food writer so I’ll keep it short — Freaking. Delicious. And I’m not even a spice eater. The mee siam rendang had a spicy yet savoury kick that left me wanting more after each bite. Heck, I was even thinking about it for weeks after my trip.

If you have yet to try Kopilicious, try it on your next trip. I promise it’s worth it.

2. Visit some furbabies at D.A Little Farms/Shi-ba Cafe

Head over to Mount Austin’s Shiba Cafe — It’s time to play with some furbabies!

Price-wise, you’ll pay around 20RM~ for an hour with the doggos and it comes with one drink. It is open from 10am to 8pm daily, with 3pm to 4pm being the dogs’ break.

one day trip to jb

We had fun playing with all types of dogs, including huskies, shiba inus, toy poodles and more. Reservations in advance are required, and you can WhatsApp them at +60 11-1193-9795.

Climb one level upstairs, and you’ll come face to face with an exotic animal cafe called D.A Little Farms .

one day trip to jb

There are ducks, cats, alpacas, birds, fennec foxes and more, perfect for animal lovers of all ages.

Here are the pricing details for both cafes:

Shiba Cafe Weekdays: Adults: RM 32 Kids (12 years old & below): RM 20

Weekends: Adults: RM 38 Kids (12 years old & below): RM 20

D.A Little Farm Weekdays: Adults: RM 48 Kids (12 years old & below): RM 20

Weekends: Adults: RM 58 Kids (12 years old & below): RM 20

3. Treat yourself to a mani-pedi at Sasa Nails House

one day trip to jb

For people who aren’t that interested in dog cafes, you can also do your nails at Sasa Nails House , which is within walking distance of the dog cafe.

I remember paying roughly around S$60~ for a french gel manicure and pedicure — and as a ‘chor lor’ (rough) person, I was surprised that my nails lasted for months without chipping off.

4. Sing your heart out at SING V KTV

one day trip to jb

If you have three hours to spare, consider going for a karaoke sesh at SING V KTV at super affordable prices. This karaoke branch can go as low as 0.50RM for three hours per person on a weekday afternoon. However, I think we paid around S$10~ for three hours per person with unlimited drinks. Still very affordable.

5. Shopping at malls like AEON Tebrau

one day trip to jb

There’s also a really great, big mall in the Austin area that’s around a 10 minute drive away called AEON Tebrau that is linked to Toppen Mall and IKEA — you might want to spend another full day here if you choose to stay the night.

There’s a movie theatre, tons of food options, clothing stores, a JUSCO supermarket and more. Anything you want, AEON Tebrau has it.

6. Play to your heart’s content at Danga Bay

one day trip to jb

If you like theme parks, this one’s for you.

Okay, truth be told, the thrill is not from the rides — it’s the safety of those rides. You might fall off and die, who knows. But that’s what makes it exciting. Just kidding. I’ve been there countless times, rode on all their cute, rickety rides and have had to any incidents… Yet.

But for real though, you should check it out. Located around a 20 minute drive from Mount Austin, this is where you’ll want to go after all the shops and malls have closed for the night.

Once the sun sets, you’ll see a bunch of local families hanging out at Danga Bay with their kids, taking rides, buying LED balloons, riding on rented PMDs/bicycles/carriages, and more. Think of it as a mini Pasar Malam (night market) and a theme park in one — that closes no earlier than 12am.

I would not recommend eating dinner there though, as the restaurants there are not cheap — it’s mostly a bunch of Chinese restaurants selling seafood by weight. But as for snacks inside the park itself (as you can see those tents behind us in the pic above), I would say go for it. There are donuts, drinks, and other food sold by individual vendors at very reasonable prices.

The park is free to enter, but you’ll have to pay for rides. Each ride costs about 2RM to 10RM, which we’re okay to pay for hours of fun.

We played bumper cars, a roller coaster in the dark, the Viking ship, as well as a cycling ride suspended in the air called Galactic Ring which looks something like this:

one day trip to jb

I found this ride to be the most “dangerous” as you are on a high track above the ground and honestly, it’s an old theme park so you can see everything from that height, including what looks like a huge metal junkyard with rusty pipes and wires sticking out from the ground directly below one part of the tracks. I would hate to imagine if someone accidentally fell out of the ride during that segment.

Also, hold onto your phone. Tightly. Very tightly.

one day trip to jb

7. Get a massage at Bangkok Family Spa

How can we ever forget about getting a massage in JB?

After playing up a storm, head over to Bangkok Family Spa at Permas Jaya for a well-deserved message.

Tons of Singaporeans enjoy going to Bangkok Spa (nearer to customs), but in my opinion, after having tried both spas multiple times, I would say that Bangkok Family Spa is better.

It’s the same price and also less crowded than Bangkok Spa, and there’s free transport to and fro customs/KSL area. It’s clean, quiet (no clock ticking sounds, thank goodness) and sometimes you may even get an individual room (where it’s a door instead of curtains) if you opt for a solo aromatherapy massage.

The spa is located around a 15 minute drive from Danga Bay.

one day trip to jb

At only around S$20 for an hour of Traditional Thai Massage, I would say that massages are a MUST DO in JB.

I personally always go for two hours of their Aromatherapy Massage, because I think oil hits better.

one day trip to jb

Click here for their full service menu and price list .

You can message them on WhatsApp at +60 11-1081-5555 to make reservations.

8. Grab supper at Fa Ge Lok Lok

After you’ve gotten all the knots out of your body, step outside of the spa and you’ll immediately see a lok lok truck next door blasting Chinese EDM music. Called Fa Ge Lok Lok, I’m not sure what time it opens and closes. Sometimes it’s there, sometimes it’s not, depending on the owner’s mood, I guess. But 80% of the time I go to the spa, that Lok Lok truck is open.

Grab some food, drinks, chill and when you’re done, get the spa’s transport to send you to customs for free.

Most affordable hotel recommendation: Stay at Midori Concept ar Austin Heights

If it’s too late and you choose to stay, here’s a hotel I’d totally recommend:  Midori Concept at Austin Heights .

one day trip to jb

Having stayed there multiple times, I can assure you that this hotel is clean, beds are comfortable and their high-powered shower is all you need for a good night’s rest.

Cheap guide to Johor Bahru - Where to go & best things to do in JB

Cheap guide to Johor Bahru - Where to go & best things to do in JB

But after you’ve changed your SGD into a thick stack of MYR, there’s still the question of what to do in JB with all that cash. It’s not gonna spend itself, right?

So I’ve compiled a list of the best things to do in Johor Bahru on a day trip, starting from the low-hanging fruit (everything near JB Sentral and City Square) to the farther-flung destinations that are worth visiting.

CHEAP GUIDE TO JOHOR BAHRU - WHERE TO GO & BEST THINGS TO DO IN JB

Johor Bahru is actually a pretty big area, so it’s actually impossible to do all of JB in one trip. Instead, try to visit places that are near one another, or else you’ll just be on the road most of the time.

I’ve grouped this article into 8 main shopping/eating clusters, in increasing level of “difficulty”.

MOVIES + FOOD: CITY SQUARE JB & KOMTAR JBCC (RIGHT OPPOSITE JB SENTRAL)

Whether you’re taking the bus, train or crossing the border on foot, JB Sentral is the immigration checkpoint and therefore your point of entry into Malaysian territory.

Once you exit, there’s an overhead linkway to 2 popular shopping malls: City Square Mall (older and more popular) and Komtar JBCC (newer and swankier, feels like Singapore).

[[nid:465072]]

Lots of JB day trippers don’t even step foot outside of these shopping malls, because it has what people come here to do anyway: Watch movies and eat.

Cheap things you can do here are:

  • Watch movies at the City Square JB cinema (ticket prices range from about RM12 to RM20)
  • Get a shoulder or foot massage at City Square
  • Shop at Sephora and Marks & Spencer at Komtar (expensive for Malaysian standards, but many items are cheaper after conversion)
  • Eat at familiar restaurants like Swensen’s (known as Seasons here), Nando’s, Tony Roma’s, Seoul Garden etc. at both shopping malls

JB CAFE HOPPING: JALAN DHOBY & HIAP JOO (WALKABLE FROM CITY SQUARE)

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BnTT2QFgVTy/?utm_source=ig_embed[/embed]

If you’re willing to bravely walk where there’s no air-con, there’s quite a lot to see in the immediate vicinity.

First, cut through City Square JB to get to Wong Ah Fook Road, and turn left. You’ll walk down a string of old school shops including a famous fish head curry place .

Cross the street to the mega pasar malam Bazar Karat (open from 7pm onwards) and continue walking until you hit Jalan Dhoby.

Jalan Dhoby is kind of like JB’s Haji Lane: It’s home to a bunch of hipster JB cafes and boutiques, all in old shophouses (of course). Be sure to explore the parallel Jalan Tan Hiok Nee as well.

The cafes here are quite pricey. Expect to pay around RM15 for a coffee (only a little less than in Singapore). Highlights:

  • Bev C Cafe (local designer boutique & cafe that everyone raves about)
  • Chaiwalla & Co. (cafe housed in a container, a la Artbox)
  • Flowers in the Window (very pretty cafe filled with plants everywhere)
  • The Replacement Lodge & KItchen (painfully cool boutique hotel & cafe)

Mixed among the hipster establishments, there are also some legit cheap local food places that make this area worth exploring:

  • It Roo Cafe & Restoran Hua Mui (both famous for chicken chop)
  • Hiap Joo Bakery (traditional bakery famous for banana cake & “burnt” buns)
  • Salahuddin Bakery (traditional bakery famous for triangular flaky curry puffs)

MASSAGE + SHOPPING: KSL MALL & BANGKOK SPA JB (10 MIN DRIVE CITY SQUARE JB)

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/oceandragonferries/?utm_source=ig_embed[/embed]

If you’ve exhausted all that the JB Sentral and Jalan Dhoby areas have to offer, JB has no lack of mega shopping malls within spitting distance of the checkpoint.

[[nid:464481]]

The biggest one is KSL City Mall, which is a 10 minute drive from City Square JB.

There are lots of taxis here, but I’d recommend using Grab if you have data, because it’ll be a lot cheaper and there’s less chance of the driver taking the long way to chop tourists.

KSL City Mall is a huge complex complete with its own hotel, multiple spas and salons, a cinema (naturally), a massive Daiso (everything RM5.90 (S$1.90)), a Tesco hypermart, many restaurants and what feelslike 500 shops all selling cheap barang barang .

You can spend the day in the shopping mall if you’re so inclined, but when I’m in the area I like to go to the nearby Bangkok Spa for a (clean) massage.

The very painful but therapeutic 60-minute Thai massage I got cost just RM62. Prices are published on their site.

Oh, you might be surprised to know that JB has its share of “nice” restaurants – you know, the kind you’d go to on a date when you want to impress someone? And there’s quite a few near KSL City:

  • Naughty Nuri’s (Balinese pork ribs restaurant)
  • Chez Papa (French bistro & wine bar)
  • Lavender L.Table (nice-ish Western food with really good desserts)
  • Gianni’s Trattoria (Italian restaurant & wines)
  • If the idea of going to a fancy Western restaurant in JB sounds weird to you, just look up their menus online and divide all the prices by 3. Tell me you’re not sold.

ICE SKATING + ROCK CLIMBING: PARADIGM MALL (20 MIN DRIVE FROM CITY SQUARE JB)

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BgXcyvblXNt/?utm_source=ig_embed[/embed]

JB regulars would have been to City Square and KSL City billions of times, so it’s totally understandable that they’re now talking about the newer and cooler  Paradigm Mall  these days.

It’s about a 20-minute Grab ride or drive from JB Sentral. Apart from being one of the newest shopping malls in JB, it’s also seriously huge at over 2 million sq ft in size (for comparison, VivoCity is 1.5m sq ft). You definitely want to wear your  HPB steps tracker  for this one.

You can definitely spend the entire day inside Paradigm Mall, because in addition to the sheer size, there’s also an  indoor ice skating rink  and an  indoor climbing gym , and they cost way less than in Singapore.

HOTTEST NEW SHOPPING MALL IN JB: THE MALL, MID VALLEY SOUTHKEY (20 MIN DRIVE FROM CITY SQUARE JB)

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/B2E1EU3Fqli/?utm_source=ig_embed[/embed]

I have no doubt that the brand spanking new The Mall, Mid Valley Southkey was created exclusively with Singaporeans and wealthy Malaysians in mind.

For one thing, as with Paradigm Mall, Mid Valley Southkey is massive enough to entertain you all day. The flagship tenant here is Sogo, the Japanese department store - remember them?? - and there are also lots of high end brands that you can find in malls like Jewel Changi Airport and Ion Orchard.

JB FURNITURE SHOPPING: AEON TEBRAU CITY, IKEA MALAYSIA (30 MIN DRIVE FROM CITY SQUARE JB)

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BcHadJ_Bik-/?utm_source=ig_embed[/embed]

Just got your BTO keys and already lamenting the exorbitant prices of furniture in Singapore?

If you’ve got your own car or can borrow/rent one, you might want to consider shopping in JB to capitalise on the exchange rate.

The obvious place to start is IKEA Tebrau (said to the biggest IKEA in Southeast Asia!) which is about a 25- to 30-minute drive from City Square.

[[nid:459433]]

There’s a big shopping mall, Aeon Tebrau City, right next to IKEA Johor in case you want to pass out at TGV cinema (which has bean bags!) for a few hours after your shopping.

The Malaysian homeware store Kaison outlet here is also worth visiting for home decor and accessories.

A few minutes’ drive from Aeon Tebrau City is the unofficial furniture district in JB: Taman Molek. Just Google “furniture shops JB” and you’ll see a bunch of them in a strip.

I haven’t been to this area myself, but from what I read in forums, there’s a bunch of furniture and lighting wholesalers here. It’s said that delivery to Singapore is common practice too.

JB WITH THE KIDS: AEON BUKIT INDAH, LEGOLAND & HELLO KITTY TOWN (20 MIN DRIVE FROM TUAS SECOND LINK)

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BU3w43rB4s4/?utm_source=ig_embed[/embed]

A viable day trip option for Westies is Bukit Indah in the western part of JB. It’s closer to Tuas Checkpoint and the Second Link (a lot less crowded than Woodlands), plus the expressway links you straight from immigration to Aeon Bukit Indah in just 20 minutes.

[[nid:452226]]

Aeon Bukit Indah isn’t exactly stunning, but it’s good enough for a relaxing day out. There’s the TGV Bukit Indah cinema (also has bean bags), a Daiso and an A&W for you to relive your childhood at.

One good thing about the Bukit Indah area is that it’s quite pedestrian-friendly by Malaysian standards. Just across from the mall is a strip of spas, restaurants and hotels, and if you turn left and walk down the road, you’ll see a big Tesco supermarket.

It’s also really near JB’s major theme parks: Legoland (RM120 for Legoland only / RM150 for Legoland + water park) and Hello Kitty Town (RM85 for Hello Kitty Town only / RM125 for Hello Kitty + Thomas Train Town). Both are located about midway between Bukit Indah and the Second Link checkpoint.

JB OUTLET SHOPPING: JOHOR PREMIUM OUTLETS (40 MIN DRIVE FROM CITY SQUARE JB)

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/Bhc-jjbH4yW/?utm_source=ig_embed[/embed]

Those who got a big fat bonus this year end and don’t know what to do with it – lucky – can head up north to Johor Premium Outlets to snap up branded goods at insane prices.

The slightly under-the-radar factory outlet cluster in JB is about a 40-minute drive away from JB Sentral, which is a bit out of the way… but it should be worth the trip if you come during their big end-of-year sale in December. Dates / details are not yet out, but back in 2018, it was from 14 to 16 Dec, so stay tuned.

HASTINGS, N.Y. (TMX) - A man drowned after attempting to retrieve his keys from an upstate New York lake during a Father’s Day fishing trip on Sunday, authorities said.

The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office said its marine patrol was patrolling Oneida Lake when they came across two people in distress in the water near the pier just south of the Waterfront Tavern in the town of Hastings at around 9:51 a.m. Sunday.

Members of Brewerton Fire Department arrived on scene to assist.

Deputies were able to retrieve one of the men, identified as 42-year-old Wattie Cappers, of Syracuse. He was transported to Upstate Hospital in stable condition.

Fire department divers located the second man, identified as 44-year-old Anthony Davis, of Clay, and pulled him from the water. He was transported to Upstate Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to the sheriff’s office, Cappers, Davis and another man were out fishing for Father’s Day when Davis’ keys fell into the water.

Davis went into the water to retrieve them, but couldn’t make it back to land.

Cappers jumped in after Davis in an attempt to rescue him, but he also couldn’t make it back to land. That’s when nearby deputies heard them yelling for help.

The sheriff’s office said the incident is under investigation.

President biden's secret service agent robbed at gunpoint ... during prez's l.a. trip.

President Biden 's Secret Service keeps taking hits -- one of the agents on his detail was robbed at gunpoint during the president's fundraising trip to California.

While POTUS was rubbing elbows with celebs, Barack Obama and megadonors Saturday night in Hollywood, one of his off-duty Secret Service agents was hanging out in Tustin -- about an hour south in Orange County -- where he got a crash course in Cali crime.

Police say the agent had his bag stolen at gunpoint around 9:36 PM at a housing complex. The agent fired his gun during the incident, though it's unclear whether the robber was struck by that gunfire.

Cops say the suspect drove off before being apprehended, and police were able to locate some of the agent's belongings in the area.

The Tustin Police Department says it's looking for a 2004-2006 silver Infiniti FX35 or similar vehicle that was seen leaving the scene ... and cops released an image of the alleged getaway car.

Biden was in California over the weekend for a massive fundraising event ... a star-studded affair that raised more than $30 million for the president's reelection campaign.

POTUS is having no issue raising money, but his Secret Service agents are having all sorts of trouble, dealing with dogs -- one in particular -- and now armed robbers.

The Best Things To Do If You Only Have A One-Day Trip In Rome, According To Travelers

R ome, Italy, known as the Eternal City, truly lives up to its name with an endless array of activities, sights, and culinary delights that could keep you busy for an eternity. However, if you only have a one-day trip planned for Rome, you'll have to be more selective with what you see and do. One thing to consider when visiting Rome for only one day is how much walking you are comfortable doing. While many of the locations we recommend are within walking distance of one another, if you would rather take a cab or car service, you'll want to plan for travel time between areas.

Likewise, if you plan to walk during your day, wear comfortable shoes that will help you keep moving on the cobblestones. To blend in,  dress like a local in Italy, and be aware of any dress codes when visiting museums and churches. You might also consider bringing a small bag with a portable charger, water bottle, and anything else to keep you on the move. Additionally, some museums and other locations might prohibit entering with large bags, so you'll want to leave your luggage behind at the hotel or with a luggage storage facility. Pulling from our own experience, along with the first-hand accounts of other travelers, we've selected city highlights and activities that are worth considering if you only have one day in Rome. From famous locations to hidden gems and local treasures, Rome has something for everyone.

Start The Day Like A Roman

To see the most of Rome during your day, you'll want to get an early start to the day and keep the energy high. To be best positioned to visit some of the more popular areas of the city early, we recommend grabbing breakfast or a coffee near Vatican City or in the Parati district. Knowing how to say a  few key phrases before visiting Italy  will help when ordering at a café, and locals often appreciate the effort.

The Italians are known for their classic espresso, and at  Caffé Dei Papi , you can order one and choose from a wide selection of pastries. Traveler reviews on Google Reviews note the friendly service and proximity to Vatican City. If you're looking for somewhere to sit down and enjoy breakfast, head to The Loft . Here, travelers recommend the freshly squeezed orange juice and waffles, via Google Reviews . Another nearby location is the Sciascia Caffè , located in Prati. One traveler calls this establishment their "Favorite Coffee Shop in Rome" on  Tripadvisor .

If you want to get a feel for the area, grab your coffee and pastry to go and walk around the Parati district, known for its well-preserved architecture and shopping. No matter where your morning escapade begins, allow yourself to be swept away by the spirited rhythm of the Italian city.

Visit The Vatican Museums And Sistine Chapel

Nestled within the hallowed walls of Vatican City, the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel stand as cultural jewels, inviting visitors on an extraordinary journey through art, history, and spirituality. The Vatican Museums house an extensive collection of masterpieces, spanning centuries and civilizations. You can expect to be captivated by sculptures, paintings, and artifacts during your visit. The pinnacle of this experience awaits within the Sistine Chapel, where Michelangelo's frescoes, including the iconic "The Last Judgment" behind the altar and the "Creation of Adam," adorn the ceiling.

When visiting the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, you'll want to book your tickets ahead of time or schedule a tour to avoid long lines and maximize your time. You'll still need to go through the security line, so allow some extra time for that. Pre-booking provides not only convenience but also the opportunity to secure coveted spots on pre-opening small group tours or weekday visits, helping you to avoid the large tourist crowds in Rome .

One reviewer on Tripadvisor  suggests booking the early morning tour that includes breakfast. Another  Tripadvisor  reviewer mentions that their visit to the Sistine Chapel was not very crowded since they visited early in the morning on a weekday. As your Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel journey concludes, extend your exploration to take in the grandeur of St. Peter's Square and St. Peter's Basilica, if time allows.

Tour The Colosseum

The Colosseum stands as an indomitable symbol of history, spectacle, and architectural mastery of ancient Rome. Considered by travelers on  Tripadvisor as an absolute must-see, the Colosseum promises an immersive encounter with the city's rich past. You'll want to secure your tickets to one of the New Seven Wonders of the World well ahead of time, as tickets can sell out during peak travel season.

One traveler notes that they spent about an hour and a half touring the Colosseum with their guide, via Tripadvisor . They booked ahead, but even tickets booked as far out as a month sell out for specific areas of this historic site. One such location within the Colosseum is the underground and gladiator platform. Depending on your schedule, one Colosseum underground tour takes place at night, offering a unique look at this ancient site. This night tour lasts about an hour and a half. Some tours also visit the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, which typically take about two and a half hours.

Go Shopping In Prati

The Prati district is known for its shopping and proximity to the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica. Prati itself is not home to many famous landmarks, but it does offer a window into upscale Roman life. This area is an upscale neighborhood with unique boutiques and outdoor vendors. One traveler review on Tripadvisor notes that while Prati is home to high-end shops, you can also find less expensive shopping opportunities. Another review, also from Tripadvisor , mentions that this area was perfect for an evening stroll.

Via Cola Di Rienzo is the main shopping street in Prati. The ambiance of the area is enchanting; not only catering to avid shoppers but also serving as the perfect backdrop for leisurely exploring. From shopping with friends to just enjoying the sites, this tree-lined street will offer you the perfect location to take in the views and travel from place to place.

Wander Around Monti

Rione Monti is a historic neighborhood, or rioni, in Rome. It is known for its charming and bohemian atmosphere, making it a favorite among both locals and visitors. Located in the heart of the city, Rione Monti is adjacent to the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, providing a central and convenient location. A charming escape from the bustling tourist hubs, Monti offers a glimpse into authentic Roman life, where cobblestone streets wind through historic alleys and vibrant piazzas. On  Tripadvisor , one traveler notes that Monti gives you the convenience of being close to some of Rome's major attractions in a non-touristy neighborhood.

A visit to Monti is incomplete without gelato. Travelers recommend  Gelateria Il Capriccio di Carla , where you can choose from an array of flavors that capture the essence of Italian craftsmanship. Traveler reviews on Tripadvisor recommend this ice cream shop because of its unique flavors and friendly staff, so grab a few scoops of this Italian favorite and wander through the lively neighborhood. Whether it's engaging with locals at a neighborhood trattoria, visiting a local restaurant or bar, or simply enjoying the lively ambiance, Monti invites you to relish the authenticity of Roman life in one of the city's most enchanting districts.

Walk To The Pantheon

The Pantheon, which is only about a 30-minute walk from the Colosseum, will take you back to ancient Rome, as the site is one of the most-preserved monuments from that era. If you choose to walk here, you can view the Roman Forum, the Monument to Victor Emmanuel II, and Piazza Venezia along the way.

In addition to holding a variety of cultural and spiritual importance, the Pantheon is also an architectural marvel. Its dome was the largest for 1,300 years, and to this day, remains the biggest dome in the world that is not supported.

One traveler review on Tripadvisor says that despite the long line to enter the Pantheon, the views from inside are well worth it. While you can book a tour of the Pantheon, exploring on your own gives more flexibility to your schedule, allowing you to spend as much or as little time in this ancient building as you'd like. Visitors must purchase a ticket to enter the Pantheon, which you can obtain online.

Grab Some Lunch

Antica Salumeria is located right by the Pantheon and has raving reviews on Tripadvisor for its sandwiches and plates of meats and cheese. This lunch won't cost you a fortune either, as many reviews note the reasonable prices and the large portions to keep you fueled during your busy day in Rome. One traveler recommends grabbing the sandwich to-go and sitting outside to enjoy the view of the Pantheon and people-watch. Another lunch spot within walking distance from the Pantheon, as well as Trevi Fountain, is  Achille al Pantheon . Travelers praise the restaurant's food, service, and atmosphere on  Tripadvisor . The menu at Achille al Pantheon includes classic Italian dishes cooked with freshly made pasta.

Since you only have one day to spend seeing Rome, we recommend having a quick lunch but choosing a local restaurant with Italian classics. If you find yourself strolling through the city, take a moment to peruse the menus displayed outside various restaurants along your path. You might stumble upon a hidden gem. And, of course, when in Rome, savoring the local wines is a must.

Visit The Trevi District

Step into the ancient heart of Rome with a visit to Rione Trevi, a district steeped in history and adorned with two of the city's iconic landmarks — the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. This area, with its cobblestone streets and timeless allure, invites you to embark on a journey through the ages.

As one of the most famous fountains globally, the Fontana Di Trevi is a mesmerizing masterpiece that demands attention. No trip to Rome is truly complete without standing in awe of its grandeur. Engage in the tradition of tossing coins over your shoulder into the fountain, as legend has it that this ritual ensures your return to the Eternal City. On  Tripadvisor , one traveler emphasizes the stunning beauty of the fountain and opines that no trip to Rome is complete without a stop here. While taking in the grand view, do not touch the water in the fountain or attempt to reclaim your coin, both of these things can get you heavily fined by local authorities.

The famed Spanish Steps, a bustling hub with a unique charm, is also located in this area. Though sitting on the steps is not permitted, the climb offers architectural marvels and panoramic views. Another traveler review on  Tripadvisor recommends this picturesque stop, highlighting the scenic views from the top level. Soak in the charm, toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain, and climb the Spanish Steps — a delightful exploration awaits in Rione Trevi, where every step is a stroll through the timeless beauty of the Eternal City.

Get A Guide

To truly immerse yourself in the rich history and vibrant culture of Rome, a guided tour can elevate your experience to new heights. Take In The Art

No lover of the arts would dare visit Rome without seeing the Borghese Gallery . Visiting the Galleria Borghese, housed in the Borghese Villa, promises a captivating journey into this treasure trove of masterpieces from renowned artists such as Caravaggio, Raphael, and Bernini. The works of art on display create a diverse and harmonious ensemble that reflects the evolution of artistic styles over the centuries.

To enhance the experience, the Galleria Borghese operates on a timed entry system that limits how many guests can enter the gallery at a time, ensuring a more intimate and focused exploration for each visitor. This aspect of the museum is something travelers tend to enjoy since it is less crowded than other landmarks, according to reviews on  Tripadvisor.  With its intimate setting and carefully curated collection, the Galleria Borghese offers a unique and immersive experience for art enthusiasts.

The meticulously designed rooms and lush surroundings of the Borghese Gardens further contribute to the overall enchantment of the visit. Whether you are an art connoisseur or a casual admirer, the Galleria Borghese stands as a testament to Rome's artistic legacy, inviting you to savor the beauty and brilliance of its unparalleled collection.

Head Underground

One unique view of the city can be found underground.  The Catacombs of Rome  can be visited with a tour guide as you head deep into history -- and into the ground. You'll learn about the history of this underground section of Rome, and your guide will keep you from getting lost in this network of burial sites.

These underground cemeteries were used from the second century until the fifth. Although there are miles of catacombs under the city of Rome, only five are open to the public. Since this is a sacred site, you will want to dress modestly, which includes covering your knees and shoulders.

If you opt for a tour of these areas, you will likely visit the Catacombs of Rome, the Capuchin Crypt, and Basilica San Martino Ai Monti. On Tripadvisor , one reviewer who took a tour found on Viator says, "If you only have time to do one tour in Rome, this should be the one." Underground tours can take over three hours, so make sure it's a top activity for your one day in Rome before signing up.

Enjoy Fine Dining

There is no shortage of fine dining experiences in Rome, Italy, but with limited time, you'll need to select one place for a memorable experience. The Ad Hoc Ristorante in Piazza del Popolo has an exceptional menu and a wine list with more than 1,000 Italian wines to select from. One traveler on Tripadvisor  praises the divine truffle tasting menu at the restaurant and perfectly paired wines. To note, the Ad Hoc offers two locations, each with the same menu, but the newer location in Circus Maximus features an outdoor terrace. A reservation will likely be required to dine at either.

Another location to consider is Crispi 19 , which is located in the historical center of Rome. You will find this restaurant between the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, a perfect location for dinner before an evening stroll through the city. Crispi 19 specializes in seafood, and fresh fish arrives on-site daily. One reviewer on  Tripadvisor  describes the seven-course tasting menu as a "special experience."

Take A Cooking Class

Embark on a culinary adventure in the heart of Rome by signing up for a cooking class with a seasoned Italian chef. This immersive experience not only introduces you to the art of crafting delectable pasta but also provides an opportunity to learn the secrets of authentic Italian cuisine. To secure your spot, it's advisable to book the class in advance, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable learning experience.

One review of a course booked through  Airbnb mentions how much they enjoyed learning to craft pasta by hand and learning more about the history of Italian cuisine. Another reviewer, who reviewed a course found through  Tripadvisor , says they liked learning to make pasta but loved meeting other travelers and sharing the unique experience with them. By immersing yourself in the flavors and culinary wisdom of Italy, you can bring home a few recipes and cherished memories of a truly authentic Roman experience.

The U.S. celebrated fathers this past weekend, and Spirit Airlines is keeping the fun going with a Father’s Day sale that has one-way flights starting as low as $39.

Treat dad to a vacation when you book by 11:59 p.m. ET on June 18 and travel between June 30 and Oct. 16.The sale is only valid on flights on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, and not available during the July 4 holiday weekend from July 2 to July 9, Spirit shared with Travel + Leisure.

"We know many of our Guests love to travel with their family, and this offer makes it easier to visit a new destination and make new memories together," Lania Rittenhouse, the vice president of guest experience, brand and communications at Spirit Airlines, said in a statement shared with T+L. “Now families taking advantage of our limited-time offers and low fares will also enjoy more flexibility with our recently launched no change or cancel fees policy.”

Fly from Atlanta to Chicago, from Boston to Charleston, from Dallas to Phoenix, from Newark to Myrtle Beach, from Fort Lauderdale to Philadelphia, and more starting at just $39 one-way. Travelers can also escape to the beach with flights to Miami starting at $39 from both Nashville and Charlotte.

Or splurge and spend a long weekend in Sin City with one-way flights to Las Vegas starting at $50 from Dallas, $91 from Atlanta, $122 from Orlando, and $130 from Newark.

As an ultra-low cost airline, Spirit offers bare-bones tickets and charges for everything from baggage to seat selection. However, travelers who belong to the airline’s paid yearly membership program, the Saver$ Club, can receive discounts on those extras.

Spirit also recently increased its checked baggage weight limit and made it easier to use travel vouchers along with eliminating change and cancellation fees in an effort to make its policies more flexible.

Travelers who miss the sale can still save big by booking their tickets in person at the airport . That’s because Spirit waives its passenger usage fee for customers who book in person, which generally saves travelers around $23 per ticket each way.

EN ROUTE TO FRANCE – Robert Pedigo had a hunch.

He and his bomber crew, based in England, had been flying missions against the Nazis. Then, on a late spring evening in 1944, a commander took each squadron into a nearby wheat field to give them special instruction.

“Men, go get a good night’s rest,” he said, “because we have an important mission tomorrow.”

The commander, he has always remembered, was Jimmy Stewart, the star who had left Hollywood to lead air attacks throughout World War II. Pedigo and the rest of the flight crew bedded down. The wakeup call would come at 2:30 the next morning, June 6.

Pedigo, from Indianapolis, had sold scrap metal and worked other jobs during the Great Depression to help support his family before enlisting in the Army Air Corps. Now he was a nose gunner and air bomber on a crew of 10 in the 453rd Bombardment group. Their B-24J Liberator, nicknamed the Silent Yokum, took off into the morning sky.

As they crossed the English Channel, Pedigo looked down and couldn’t believe his eyes. He had been right. It was something big.

Instead of just water, he saw ships, so many that he could have walked across the channel, using the boats as stepping stones.

Instead of just sky, he saw fighters, heavy bombers, C-47 troop transports, every kind of plane imaginable.

It was June 6, 1944, the day the rest of the world would soon know as D-Day .

From his seat at the nose gun, Pedigo could see it happening. Above, below and all around him, every boat and plane was headed in the same direction he was. Toward Normandy.

May 30, 2024: Fort Worth, Texas

With the ballroom lights dim, a 50-member choir of cadets from the U.S. military academies assembled on stage. They launched into a patriotic number, the closing event of the evening.

Spread out in front of them was a crowd of hundreds, but 66 were particularly important.

World War II veterans, each was accompanied by a family member or guardian. Eight decades after D-Day, they were gathering in Texas for the start of a new mission.

They were chosen to make an honor flight aboard a chartered Boeing 787 provided by American Airlines. The party also included six Medal of Honor winners from wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam and two “Rosie the Riveters,” women who made invaluable contributions to the war effort by working in factories and shipyards. In total, some 280 people would make up the entourage.

Together, they would be headed back to France, back to the scene of D-Day itself.

The journey would lead them to the beaches once code-named Omaha and Utah, where several of the men among the 66 had fought in some of the bloodiest combat of D-Day.

Atop the steep cliffs above Omaha Beach, President Joe Biden and other world leaders will mark the 80th anniversary of the invasion on Thursday.

The 66 vets will be there, too, at Normandy American Cemetery, where more than 9,000 fallen Americans – people who were once just like them – rest forever beneath French soil.

The trip to get there required more than a year of planning. But its official beginning was with a gala ball on May 30, the night before departure.

One or two at a time, the vets entered. People pulled out their phones and snapped pictures. David Yoho, 95, from Vienna, Virginia, did an animated bow as the crowd cheered.

Behind him, some rode in wheelchairs. Others, slightly stooped, leaned on canes. A few wore military uniforms decorated with medals.

Inside the ballroom at American Airlines’ headquarters, the veterans exchanged war stories and dined on Provencal short ribs, lump crab cakes and apple pie topped with creamy French brie. A few got up from their tables and slow danced to bands covering Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope and the Andrews Sisters.

Dan Dougherty, an Army veteran who was on the first ship to go directly from the United States to France during the war, celebrated his 99 th birthday. The entire room serenaded him with “Happy Birthday.”

The mood was celebratory, but statistics added some poignancy to the pageantry.

The youngest of the 66 making the journey was 95; the oldest 107. Their average age: 100.8.

About a third of the adult male population of the United States served at some point during World War II . The armed forces included about 16.5 million men and women in all.

Today, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, less than 1% of them are still alive.

For some of the 66 veterans, this flight would be their first trip to Normandy since the war. For all of them, it would most likely be their last.

“You launched the largest wave of freedom across our world,” former President George W. Bush said in a videotaped message. “Billions of people have lived in liberty because of what you did 80 years ago.”

Watching him was Dominick Critelli, 103, an Army veteran who landed on Utah Beach a few days after the D-Day invasion and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Critelli had immigrated to the United States from Italy when he was only 8, during the dictatorship of Benito Mussolini, “where they were shooting everybody and giving them poison.”

“I can’t forget that,” he said.

In America, he found a new home, one he would later fight for.

Finally, the choir took to the stage. The song filled the room.

From the mountains, to the prairies, to the oceans white with foam.

From his table at the back, Critelli silently mouthed the words.

1944: D-Day at Omaha Beach, France

Sid Edson got up early and went from breakfast to a briefing and then to his bomber.

“My God,” he thought just before he climbed into his plane. “Today is the day.”

Edson had been a welder in Brooklyn before he was drafted into the Air Force in 1943. He worked as a radio operator and a gunner in a B-24 Liberator as part of Bomb Squadron 491. On the morning of June 6, the squadron’s mission was to bomb a German airfield in France.

“We were hoping it would help the soldiers invading all of the beaches,” recalls Edson, who now lives  in Lake Worth, Florida.

Edson wouldn’t remember much about the flight to France that day. He was too focused on doing his job. A radio operator had to make sure the flight crew was monitoring correct frequencies. And that the bomber's complex intercom system was functioning properly so the crew could communicate with each other. Edson also doubled as a gunner. He had to be prepared, on a moment’s notice, to man the bomber’s giant machine guns and open fire.

An eerie radio silence filled the plane as it neared its target. The approaching Americans didn’t want to say anything that might tip off the Germans about what was about to hit them.

May 31, 2024: Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport

By 5 p.m. Friday, a sizable crowd had begun to form in Terminal D to watch the parade pass by.

Boy Scouts in tan-and-green uniforms waved American flags. Travelers hurrying to catch a flight slowed to check out the commotion. Others squatted beside the white-haired men and asked for permission to take selfies.

American Airlines began planning the trip 18 months ago. The Old Glory Honor Flight, a nonprofit group that has arranged other trips for veterans, helped recruit applicants, train their guardians and provide the medical staff volunteers. A foundation led by actor Gary Sinise also helped put the trip together.

Veterans selected to make the trip were required to get a medical exam to determine that they were healthy enough to travel. Seventy-five wheelchairs were available if needed – enough for every veteran on board.

Most of the veterans stayed in wheelchairs for the short ride from gate D24 to D29, where they would board a plane for the 5,000-mile, 8½-hour flight to Paris.

Willie Clemons, 96, who joined the Navy after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor , saluted the cheering crowd that swelled with each passing minute.

Passengers waiting at gate D27 for a flight to Barcelona jumped from their seats and applauded. A woman working the counter at Dickey’s Barbecue Pit collected orders while keeping her eyes on the festivities.

Andi Goldsticker of Dallas stood off to the side and held a sign thanking the veterans for their bravery and sacrifices in service to the country. “Because of YOU,” it read, “we are safe and free.”

Goldsticker’s father-in-law, Ralph Goldsticker, 102, a bombardier who flew missions on D-Day, was making the trip to France. His son, Andi’s husband Larry, was accompanying him.

As she watched, she recalled the way her father-in-law had described the war. “Every time I dropped a bomb,” he would say, “I thought I was going to die.”

At the boarding gate, the wheelchairs turned down the jetway.

The 66 made their way down the plane’s double aisles. Above them, a photo and bio of each was taped to the overhead luggage bins.

Festoons of red, white and blue stars were draped across cabin walls. Small American flags were tucked behind the passenger seat headrests.

Over the intercom, the announcements were tailored to the century-old travelers.

Take your medicines. Drink plenty of liquids. Be sure to change sitting positions every few hours.

In the rows behind the vets was a 12-member volunteer medical team. Emergency room doctors and nurses, a paramedic and nurse practitioners would roam the plane throughout the flight.

Anyone experiencing a health issue should alert the crew right away.

The orange Texas sunset glared through the cabin windows as the plane rolled, lifted off and pointed toward France.

1944: Omaha Beach, France

Dead bodies lay scattered on Omaha Beach when Vernon Mitchell landed.

Mitchell, a gunner, had known precious little about the military before he enlisted in the Army in 1940. But jobs were hard to come by in St. Augustine, Texas, after the Great Depression. After working his entire young life on a farm, he signed up for the service at age 19. A few short years later, he was wading ashore in France.

It was Wednesday, June 7. The first wave of the Allied invasion – and the most intense fighting – had taken place the day before. Over the course of the invasion, about 2,400 U.S. soldiers, more than 1,400 British and nearly 1,100 Canadians would be killed.

Countless German soldiers died, too, but the Germans had already picked up many of their corpses by the time Mitchell landed. Dead soldiers were bad for morale.

When Mitchell and other members of the Army’s 2nd Infantry Division stepped onto the shore, they were smacked by German artillery fire.

“They were still bombarding the place,” Mitchell remembers. “It was terrible.”

Mitchell and his comrades fought their way out of Omaha Beach. Days later, however, Mitchell was heavily wounded when a German shell hit his squad. Two of his fellow soldiers died.

June 1, 2024: Somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean

The overhead lights in the first-class cabin were on dim as the airliner zipped across the Atlantic Ocean at 37,000 feet. A little past midnight, there were still 2,300 miles to go – roughly the halfway point to Paris.

Several veterans dozed quietly as a medical crew roamed periodically through the cabin. John Gleeson, however, was wide awake.

A blanket thrown over his legs to stay warm, Gleeson, 100, of Honolulu, was recalling the story of how he ended up among these 66 veterans.

His midnight memories were snippets of the entire war.

How the news of the bombing of Pearl Harbor had enraged him as a teenager in Long Beach, California.

How he couldn’t pick out Oahu on a map, but the day after Dec. 7, 1941, he enlisted in the Army. How he qualified for the Air Corps.

How he was sitting on a bluff overlooking the beach three years later when the radio blared with the news about D-Day. The feeling when he realized so many of the men being killed were the same age as he was.

Gleeson recalled going to his commanding officer and asking to go to gunnery school. How he was finally sent to fly combat missions over Europe.

“I just had a feeling,” he remembered, as the 787 soared through the night. “I’ve got to do something to help save the world, or save the United States.”

1944: Utah Beach, France

The landing craft pitched and swayed on the choppy water as it approached Utah Beach. But Martin Sylvester never got seasick.

The Brooklyn native had always been prone to carsickness. Around him, other soldiers from the Army’s 4th Infantry Division had grown sick from the turbulent tossing of their amphibious military vessel and were throwing up. Not Sylvester. Maybe, he surmised in his 2009 memoir, he was just too frightened.

The son of a tailor and a stay-at-home mom, Sylvester landed as part of the third wave of Allied forces on June 7. He and the other troops could hear gunfire in the distance as they waded through 3 feet of water and approached the shore. Yet they encountered no resistance from the Germans.

They walked to the top of a hill, where they came across a cement bunker with dead Germans inside and a field strewn with the corpses of animals – cows, horses, pigs and dogs, all killed by Navy artillery fire that had overshot the beach.

The crackle of small rifle fire suddenly filled the air. The Germans were shooting at them. The soldiers quickly ducked into a patch of hedgerows about seven feet apart and fired back. “When we fired, we went from hedgerow to hedgerow,” Sylvester recalled in an interview.

Sylvester and his comrades suffered only minimal casualties. The following January, however, he was hit by a sniper and taken as a prisoner of war in Fuhren, Germany. He escaped a couple of months later and hid in the basement of a one-room schoolhouse until he was picked up by an American armored unit that came through the town. He was recuperating in a Paris hospital when, on May 8, 1945, he heard loud noises and celebrations in the street.

The Germans had surrendered. The war would soon be over.

June 1, 2024: Paris

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Paris,” a member of the flight crew announced as the plane touched down at 11:48 a.m. Saturday at Charles de Gaulle Airport, named after the French general and World War II hero. The exhausted passengers applauded and cheered.

One at a time, the veterans disembarked with the help of family members and assistants, who pushed their wheelchairs down the narrow jetway. Inside the terminal, a long line of spectators held up photos of the veterans, waved French and American flags and shouted “thank you” in French accents.

At a brief airport ceremony, a handful of veterans slowly rose from their wheelchairs as young students in blue sweaters sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” and the French national anthem, “La Marseillaise.” Others, too tired to rise, stayed seated, hands over their hearts.

In France, veterans who had a role in the D-Day landings are not only considered honored guests, but are embraced as “cherished heroes,” Denise Campbell Bauer, the U.S. ambassador to France, told the gathering.

“Your presence here reminds us that behind the monumental scale of D-Day are real people, individuals with their own stories,” she said.

The last surviving World War II veterans are “the living witnesses to an era that shaped our world,” said Philippe Étienne, the former French ambassador to the United States.

From the back row, Pedigo was overwhelmed as he silently listened to the accolades.

“I have a tremendous connection, tremendous feelings for the buddies I lost there,” he said. “Tremendous feelings for people worldwide, especially the French people.”

While in Paris, the veterans would attend a ceremony at Suresnes American Cemetery and another beneath the Arc de Triomphe. Then on Monday, they would board buses to Normandy for the final leg of their journey, to stand where thousands of other Americans – people who were once just like them – rest forever beneath French soil.

Aboard the buses would be Martin Sylvester, 98, who had endured each day as a POW on two slices of bread and a cup of watery soup.

Vernon Mitchell, 103, who survived the shelling that killed two of his comrades, and was later awarded with the Purple Heart, Bronze star and the French Legion of Honor.

Sid Edson, 100 , who dropped his bombs successfully that day and only later pondered the fact that he had been in the air the entire time – and never set foot on French soil.

And 100-year-old Robert Pedigo, who always had the feeling that on June 6, something important was going to happen.
