Best Rome Night Tours

Rome is beautiful during the daytime, but seeing the city at night time is a completely different experience. It’s indescribable, it’s surreal. And there’s only one way that you can Rome’s beauty at night, and that is by taking a Rome night tour. Seeing the attractions lit up against the dark night sky will leave you with memories to last a lifetime.

1. Rome by Night with Pizza and Gelato (max 8 people with driver)

⭐ RATING: 4.5 out of 5 Stars (600+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 4 hours | 🧍 GROUP SIZE: Max 8 | 🏛️ BOOK NOW

If you are looking for an all-in-one Rome night tour, then my favourite general tour is the Rome by Night with Pizza and Gelato (max 8 people with driver) . It visits all of the main attractions, and also includes some tasty food!

Review which says "This tour was a really great experience! I signed up to see some of the best sights in Rome lit up at night, and I got that. What I didn't expect was the huge wealth of knowledge that our tour guide brought to the experience. He really brought the city to life with history, stories, and jokes. It was a wonderful evening!"

With over 600 reviews , having an average rating of 4.5/5 is extremely impressive. Rome by Night with Pizza and Gelato has also gained more than 200 reviews in the last few months. It was at 400 reviews when I last updated this just before summer.

When booking a tour, I always like to book a tour that has passed the test of travellers before me. And this tour has certainly done that. And now, it’s passed my test and I recommend it to you.

I can’t emphasise enough how different the sights are in Rome at night compared to daytime. It’s like a completely different city, and this tour will take you from attraction to attraction allowing you to see them all.

It visits the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Vatican City and more! All in one tour! It will be a night to remember, that’s for sure. My personal favourite is the obvious, the Colosseum , but it’s genuinely breathtaking at night when it’s lit up.

As the review above says, the tour guide brings the tour up a notch. Seeing the sights is one thing, but learning about the sights is another thing. And this tour will allow you to get the best of both.

Having such a small group size is really perfect too, as for a night tour, you want a personal experience, not to be sharing a group with 30 people where the guide has to shout just to be heard. Thankfully, this tour is limited to 8 as you are driven around in a small minivan.

As the name of the tour, Rome by Night with Pizza and Gelato , suggests, you also get to eat some pizza and gelato. You get a delicious authentic Roman pizza (or pasta dish if you prefer) and some of the best gelato Rome has to offer.

Combining sightseeing with food is an unbeatable combo in my opinion, especially in Rome where 1) the sights are extraordinary and 2) the Italian cuisine is one of the best in the world.

So if you want the perfect Rome night tour, visiting all of the sights and learning about them along the way, with some tasty food in between, then be sure to book this tour before it sells out for the dates you want!

2. VIP Colosseum At Night Tour With Underground & Arena Floor

A picture of the Colosseum lit up at night, which you can see during many of these Rome night tours.

⭐ RATING: 4.5 out of 5 Stars (2100+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 🧍 GROUP SIZE: Max 24 | 🏛️ BOOK NOW

Although the whole of Rome is beautiful at night, as I said, my personal favourite is the Colosseum. I love it during the day, but I love love love it at night. Seeing the orange-yellow glow it creates is just wow! And a VIP Colosseum At Night Tour With Underground & Arena Floor is the perfect way to experience it.

night tour roma

People come to Rome just to see the Colosseum. And I really can’t believe that some people leave Rome without seeing the Colosseum at night . It’s almost like two different attractions.

Even if you have taken a tour of the Colosseum during the day, I would still encourage taking a tour at night. VIP Colosseum At Night Tour With Underground & Arena Floor is the best in my opinion.

The tour is with “Walks”, my favourite tour company in the world. I’ve taken tours with Walks in lots of different countries such as Greece and the USA, but my favourite Walks tours have all been in Rome.

At night time, there’s a fraction of the people, the atmosphere is so different, and of course, it’s lit up. Being in the Colosseum with 100 people instead of 1000 is unbeatable.

It’s so much nicer and you can turn around in a circle without bumping into someone. As the above review says, it’s a surreal experience.

Seeing the Colosseum at night will make you understand why Rome is known as the City of Love . After taking a tour, I sat with my friend outside the Colosseum for hours simply admiring the view and talking into the early hours of the morning. The Colosseum is a special place.

VIP Colosseum At Night Tour With Underground & Arena Floor also takes you to two exclusive areas , which are off-limits to the general public unless you take a tour. The Underground, which is a labyrinth of tunnels under the Arena Floor, and the Arena Floor which is, well, the Arena Floor.

It gives a true perspective of what it would have been like being in the Colosseum two thousand years ago, instead of simply walking around the concourse.

Looking for an unforgettable three hours with memories to last forever? Head to the Colosseum for a night tour, but make sure to book ASAP as spaces are limited to keep the crowds low.

3. Trastevere at Sunset: Rome Food & Wine Tour

⭐ RATING: 4.5 out of 5 Stars (300+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 🧍 GROUP SIZE: Max 10 | 🏛️ BOOK NOW

Trastevere is often regarded as the most picturesque and romantic part of Rome. The streets and the good food attract travellers from all over the world.

Add a sunset and a glass of wine to that, and you have one of the best tours you will ever take. I present to you, the Trastevere at Sunset: Rome Food & Wine Tour . One of the most picturesque Rome night tours.

Review which says "What a wonderful evening in Trastavere! We loved exploring this beautiful neighborhood in Rome, experiencing Roman food, wonderful drinks, and getting to know lovely people. The food and wine exceeded our expectations and we learned so much from our guide! Thank you!"

Okay, admittedly, this isn’t entirely a Rome night tour, but it is once the sun sets, right? Sometimes in cities, it can be hard to catch a decent sunset, but this isn’t the case in Rome.

I spent 5 days in Rome, and each day I caught an unbelievable sunset. It was Australia-esque. I love sunsets and some of my favourite ever ones have been in Rome.

Trastevere is somewhere that anyone visiting Rome should try to have dinner in at least once. I can’t begin to count how many yummy pizzas and pastas I had there. And the best way to navigate the hundreds of possible restaurants is by taking a food tour.

Trastevere at Sunset: Rome Food & Wine Tour allows you to take part in aperitivo, an Italian tradition where you have a drink before a meal. Taking part is a super authentic experience, which most people won’t get out of a Rome trip.

You also get over 10 food tastings, and 5 Italian wine tastings. If you are a foodie, this is the perfect tour for you. Italian cuisine is one of the most famous in the world, and there’s nowhere better to enjoy it than in Rome.

And there’s nowhere better in Rome than Trastevere! And how could I forget, the gorgeous sunset? All of these things come together to create the most perfect tour possible.

Over 300 people have rated Trastevere at Sunset: Rome Food & Wine Tour at 5 stars , so be sure to secure your spot before someone else takes your place.

4. Alone in Rome’s Catacombs: Exclusive After-Hours Tour with Bone Chapel

A picture of the catacombs in Rome .

⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (950+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 2.5 hours | 🧍 GROUP SIZE: Max 18 | 🏛️ BOOK NOW

If you’re looking for a thrilling Rome night tour, then you’re in luck, as the Alone in Rome’s Catacombs: Exclusive After-Hours Tour with Bone Chapel presents just the opportunity you are looking for. Nearly 1000 people have rated it 5/5 , so you know it’s a good one…

night tour roma

Paris is famous for its underground catacombs, Rome not so much. You might not have even known they existed before reading this. But they do. And you can explore them.

I really recommend checking out the Catacombs, even if you don’t take a night tour, they’re really cool. One of Rome’s hidden gems , for sure.

Taking the Alone in Rome’s Catacombs tour gives you exclusive access after dark into the catacombs, where you can explore the network of tunnels connecting Rome underground.

And yes, there are walls filled with skulls just like in Paris. You get to see the Bone Chapel with no crowds at all.

It’s best to take a tour as you can learn chilling stories about the history of the Catacombs and hear your guide tell spooky legends.

As the review above says, it’s considered one of the best tours you can take in Rome . And I can personally agree with this! I was a bit scared taking a Catacombs tour but it was fascinating at the same time. Exploring the catacombs at night just adds a sense of eeriness that you wouldn’t get during the day.

If this sounds like a bit of you, make sure to book the alone in Rome’s Catacombs: Exclusive After-Hours Tour with Bone Chapel tour today.

5. Rome: E-Bike Night Tour with Food and Wine Tasting

A picture of the Italian parliament at nighttime. A key stop on most Rome night tours.

⭐ RATING: 4.9 out of 5 Stars (800+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 4 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW

There are lots of ways to get around Rome at night, and one of the most fun is by taking an electric bike. The Rome: E-Bike Night Tour with Food and Wine Tasting encompasses both fun and sightseeing (and eating and drinking!) into one, making for a pretty damn good tour.

Review which says "Wonderful! It's a tour that needs to be done! Riding through the streets of Rome, visiting the main places at night with everything lit up is remarkable! My tour guide was great too!"

Most of the tours on this list get around the city by pretty “standard” means such as a minivan or a bus. Not this tour.

Riding an e-bike is incredibly fun, but due to the crowds during the daytime, it would be pretty hard to see the sights in Rome on a bike. But the quieter streets of nighttime make it much easier. Rome was one of the first cities I ever rode an e-bike and it was really enjoyable, especially since you’re surrounded by the sights.

You get to see everything Rome has to offer at night , as you visit all of the main attractions including the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, Pantheon and more.

Seeing the sights lit up, to quote the review, is “remarkable”, and I really can’t recommend it enough. It’s magical. If you have ever been to Disney and felt the magic , Rome gives you the same feeling.

And you also get some cheese and wine at the beginning (usually at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore) so feel free to come to the tour with a rumbling stomach! But also, don’t drink too much wine that you can’t see straight to cycle, haha!

By the way, if you haven’t ridden an e-bike before, don’t worry. The guide gives a lesson at the start and won’t begin the tour until everyone is comfortable. However, if you can ride a normal bike, you should get the hang of it pretty quickly. It’s more or less the same but with less effort. And you can go faster too, allowing the group to quickly get around Rome.

Looking for a bit of fun on an e-bike while exploring Rome at night? And fancy yourself some cheese and wine? Be sure to book the Rome: E-Bike Night Tour with Food and Wine Tasting tour to bring about the perfect ending to one of your days in Rome.

6. Rome: Vatican Museums by Night Guided Tour

A picture of St. Peter's Basilica at nighttime with a Christmas tree lit up outside.

⭐ RATING: 4.4 out of 5 Stars (40+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW

Rome night tours are a great way to see the Eternal City of Rome lit up at night, but did you know you can also step into the Vatican Museums after hours? Well, you can! And the Rome: Vatican Museums by Night Guided Tour is the best way to do it.

Review which says "Visiting the Vatican Museums and the Sistine chapel at night was magical and informative and I would recommend this tour. Our tour guide was a real quirky character and I appreciated his humor."

If you have ever watched Night at the Museum, visiting the Vatican after hours is a similar experience. No- I don’t mean the Sistine Chapel comes to life, I mean that there are so few people there.

One of the worst parts about visiting the Vatican Museums normally is that they are jam-packed with people and it can be pretty hard to find some personal space to look at something that interests you. Or there are too many feet to see the incredibly beautiful decorated flooring.

Visiting at night bypasses these problems as there are only a few tour groups in the whole of the Vatican Museums at one time. The review above uses the word “magical” and I think this is the perfect description for what the Rome: Vatican Museums by Night Guided Tour offers.

I couldn’t believe the contrast between visiting during the day and at night time. If you ask me, it’s a no-brainer and the Vatican wins every time.

Being surrounded by so many infamous pieces of art with so few people around is incredible, and it’s a million times better than visiting during the busy hours of the daytime.

If you want to visit the Vatican during your trip to Rome – and who doesn’t? – then make sure to head there after hours and book the Rome: Vatican Museums by Night Guided Tour .

7. Rome by Night Walking Tour – Legends & Criminal Stories

A picture of some ancient buildings in Rome lit up at night.

⭐ RATING: 4.5 out of 5 Stars (950+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 1.5 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW

As one of the highest-reviewed Rome night tours of them all, you can be assured that the Rome by Night Walking Tour – Legends & Criminal Stories tour guarantees to impress. It doesn’t get nearly 1000 positive reviews for no reason!

Review which says "This was a wonderful walking tour of Rome filled with stories that you would never normally hear. The most amazing part of the tour was walking familiar streets and then being told about incredible historical events that occurred right at the spot you were standing that would never normally occur to you during the course of your day. I would definitely do this tour again."

Rome has a fascinating history, in many ways. You only need to hear the word “Rome” to think Colosseum which is 2000 years old, or the Roman Empire, or Italian Capital. Any of these things show Rome has a strong history.

The social media trend in September 2023 of “ How often do you think of the Roman Empire? ” proves this exactly! I wrote the above paragraph well before that trend was a thing.

But Rome also has a paranormal history. And there’s no better way to learn more than by taking the Rome by Night Walking Tour – Legends & Criminal Stories tour.

You can stroll through the beautifully illuminated streets at night while learning about the haunted past (and present????) of Rome, as your guide takes you to some of the key spots for ghosts and other legends in Rome.

As someone who loves learning about history and studied it in school, I loved learning about the lesser-known history of Rome.

Don’t worry if you aren’t the biggest fan of ghost tours, this is also a great way to see some of Rome’s sights at night. That being said, it doesn’t visit the Colosseum though, so this might not be the tour for you if that’s what you are looking for.

But if you want to experience Rome at night and feel the paranormal activity, then this is the perfect tour for you.

8. Vespa Tour By Night with pick up/drop off

A picture of some ruins in Rome at night which you can see during one of these Rome night tours.

⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (1000+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW

Have you ever pictured yourself driving through Italy in a Vespa? Well, you can allow that dream to come true as the Vespa Tour By Night with pick up/drop off does exactly that, while showing you how beautiful Rome is at night. It’s one of the most popular Rome night tours.

Review which says "It was such a fun way to see Rome at night. It was totally worth it! Highly recommended this tour!"

Riding in a vintage Vespa through Rome is the definition of “riding in style” . You get personally driven to all of the must-see sights in Rome to see them lit up at night.

It’s much like some of the other tours, but the main selling point is the Vespa. It’s an experience in itself, and adding in the Rome attractions is simply a bonus.

There are so many Rome Vespa tours to choose from, but this one is the best one to do at night in my opinion. Whizzing around all of the attractions in a traditional Vespa is quite the night, to say the least.

You also make a stop for coffee and gelato. “ When in Rome, do as the Romans do ” as the saying goes, and Romans love their coffee and gelato, no matter what time of the day it is.

Whether you simply want to ride in a Vespa or you want to see Rome at night, there’s no denying that this is one of the best Rome night tours. As the review says, it’s such a fun way to see Rome at night. Vespas are extremely fun!

Just picture yourself cruising through the streets of Rome, with the classic helmet on, a slight breeze on your face and the sound of the Vespa purring. It’s a sensory experience not to be missed out on.

Sound good? Book the Vespa Tour By Night with pick up/drop off as soon as possible, as there are only so many Vespas available, and I’d hate for you to miss out.

9. Rome: 4-Hour Food Tour by Night

A picture of some resetaurants in Rome at night

⭐ RATING: 4.8 out of 5 Stars (1200+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 4 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW

Rome is a foodie’s paradise, and taking a food night tour of Rome is a must-do for anyone who appreciates Italian cuisine. Rome: 4-Hour Food Tour by Night offers 20, yes 20, different food tastings throughout the 4-hour tour.

Review which says "The food tour was great! You stay in a little known neighborhood with not many tourists. Started with a wine, cheese, and truffle tasting, then went to Bonci pizzarium. Next went to a sit down restaurant to have more cheese, meat and wine, and a pasta entree. Lastly, you finish with gelato. The tour is expensive but the quality of food & wine products is of the highest. Highly recommend!"

There are lots of food tours in Rome , but this is by far one of the best options. The Italian cuisine is my personal favourite out of them all, so to get 20 different tastings is unbelievable.

You get to experience pretty much everything you could possibly imagine about the food scene in Rome. From wine and cheese to truffles and pasta, you get a bit of everything.

Spending four hours treating your taste buds is what people would describe as heaven! If this is your idea of heaven, then this is probably the one of all the Rome night tours for you.

I’m quite a fussy eater (I’m trying to get better I promise) but I still found all of the food on this tour absolutely delicious.

When booking a tour, I like to go with tours that have lots of reviews. It shows that people have taken this tour and it’s generally well thought of. No one wants to take a tour with no reviews right? The Rome: 4-Hour Food Tour by Night has an impressive 4.8/5 rating with more than 1000 reviews! It’s definitely people-approved.

Some food tours – though not really in Rome – often give you cheap and low-quality food, but this couldn’t be further from the truth here.

You are only served the most authentic and most delicious food that Rome has. The guides even take you off the tourist path into lesser-known eateries which are usually even better than the touristy ones.

Looking for the best way to try out everything Rome has to offer in terms of food? Secure your spot on this 4-hour-long eating marathon of a food tour.

10. Rome: Bar Hop and Nightlife Tour

A picture of a busker in Rome

⭐ RATING: 4.3 out of 5 Stars (260+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 5 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW

If you are visiting Rome as a solo traveller as I did, or if you simply want to experience what a night out in the Italian capital is like, then you’ll want to check out the Rome: Bar Hop and Nightlife Tour . Spoiler alert, the nightlife in Rome is amazing!

Review which says "Wonderful tour. Wonderful Guides and met a lot of people out there and had so much fun. Our tour guides were outstanding always took care of us. "

As part of this tour, you are taken to 3 of the best bars and clubs in all of Rome . And there’s also a free drink i ncluded at the start…who can say no to a free drink??

Entry into the clubs is also included as part of your ticket, so all you need to do is turn up and have a good time. If you’re backpacking in Rome , this is the perfect tour for you.

Nightlife tours are always a great way to meet new people and make new friends, and Rome is the perfect place. I left Rome with lots of new friends that I still speak to today, not just from a nightlife tour but from the city itself, it’s so easy to meet fellow travellers!

Of course, make sure you bring your ID (the drinking age in Italy is 18) and comfy shoes for walking, and the tour company are very clever in suggesting you bring a business card for your accommodation, just in case you get a bit tipsy and forget…

Rome’s nightlife will leave you pleasantly surprised, so make sure to book the Rome: Bar Hop and Nightlife Tour if you want the best night out of your life.

11. Rome by Night: 3-Hour Segway Tour

A picture of a statue in Rome at night which you can see during one of these Rome night tours.

⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (80+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW

Want to take one of these Rome night tours but find getting around in minivans boring? How about segways? That’s right, you can take a Rome by Night: 3-Hour Segway Tour and ride from sight to sight on a segway!

Review which says "Amazing the highlight of our trip. Our guide was fantastic- navigated the city with ease and brought us to see into the Colosseum at night and ruins we wouldn’t have seen. The best tour of all. Highly recommend it!!"

One of my favourite things about Rome is that every street is pretty. Around every corner, there is a new fountain or a statue you haven’t seen before. The whole of Rome is simply beautiful.

And one of the best ways to experience this is by simply exploring the streets. And what better way to do so than on a segway? It’s like the e-bikes but even more fun!

The biggest selling point of any of these Rome night tours is obviously being able to see the infamous landmarks in Rome at night, lit up, without the crowds. Which is great, and I love it.

But why not add in a bit of fun to your journey while you go from attraction to attraction? The segways are the perfect solution.

Don’t worry if you haven’t ridden one before, it’s super easy to pick up and it won’t be long before you are cruising the night streets like a boss!

If you’re a fun-lover, make sure to book the Rome by Night: 3-Hour Segway Tour well in advance as there are limited numbers of segways available.

12. Haunted Rome Ghost Tour – The Original

A picture of Castel Sant'Angelo at night. One of the most haunted places in Rome.

⭐ RATING: 4.5 out of 5 Stars (400+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 1.5 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW

As I said before, Rome has a haunted past and there are many great Rome night tours which guide you through the paranormal history of the city, but few are as good as Haunted Rome Ghost Tour – The Original . Nothing beats an original!

night tour roma

Being the original haunted ghost tour in Rome, this tour knows what it’s talking about. And know exactly what stories to tell to get the hairs on your arms standing up .

In my opinion, ghost tours can sometimes be a bit meh, oftentimes they are underwhelming. But this wasn’t the case in Rome- not at all.

Thankfully, Haunted Rome Ghost Tour – The Original exceeds expectations and completely obliterates this reputation of ghost tours I have.

You are taken to all of Rome’s most haunted spots, and you get a very hands-on experience, as you are taught how to use dowsing rods , which are used to search for ghosts.

It’s also a small group size, with a maximum of 15 people, making it all the more scary as you visit the spooky scenes in the dark.

I can’t recommend this tour enough, and it offers a memorable night hunting for the paranormal in the streets of Rome after hours.

13. Roma by Night: E-Bike Tour

A picture of Rome at night taken from the river.

⭐ RATING: 4.8 out of 5 Stars (320+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW

Another great e-bike Rome night tour is the Roma by Night: E-Bike Tour which offers another option. You can choose from 4 different languages on this tour which is really helpful!

Review which says "I really enjoyed this experience. It was about 3 hours long and we got to see all of Rome. The bikes were really fun to use and our tour guide was very friendly and told us lots about the city and its history."

Riding around Rome on an e-bike is a really efficient way to see all of the most popular sights in a short period of time. You are, in a nutshell, seeing all of Rome in just 3 hours!

You are pretty much moving as fast as a car, but avoiding the traffic. And trust me, driving a car in Rome can get pretty hectic. All rules of the road are basically ignored.

But e-bikes are easy to ride, don’t take too much effort , and allow you to see the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Roman Forum, Pantheon and Rome’s most popular piazzas all in the space of 3 hours. And at night when they are lit up!

Don’t worry either- they provide helmets too. And they even provide trailer bikes if you want to bring the children along , where they can be attached to the back of your bike.

If this sounds like a bit of you, riding through the streets of Rome on an electric bike, then check out the Roma by Night: E-Bike Tour and book your spot.

14. Night Vatican Museums Tour Including Sistine Chapel

A picture of the main street in the Vatican looking to St. Peter's Basilica at night.

⭐ RATING: 4 out of 5 Stars (250+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW

Seeing the Vatican Museums during the daytime is pretty cool. Not everyone gets to see the Sistine Chapel in their lifetime. But exploring the museums and seeing the iconic art after hours when there are so few people is a next-level experience.

Review which says "Amazing tour. It felt like they closed for just a small intimate tour. We were able to see the beautiful floors with only a handful of people in each room. Highly recommend!!"

The Sistine Chapel is arguably the most famous piece of art in the whole world, and seeing it for yourself is a pinch-yourself moment. But being one of only a handful of people in the room makes the memories even more extraordinary.

As the review says, when taking the Night Vatican Museums Tour Including Sistine Chapel you feel like the museums are closed. It almost feels like you aren’t meant to be there it is so quiet. But you are! And that’s the beauty of it. You can explore the museum freely without the crowd like a true VIP.

You also have a guide with you who can help tell you facts and stories about the museum which you wouldn’t otherwise hear. It’s great to learn a bit more about what you are actually looking at.

Unfortunately, since it is such an exclusive tour, it is only available on Friday nights from May to October. If you are visiting outside this window and not over a Friday, unfortunately, this isn’t the tour for you.

But if you are visiting over a Friday in those months, it’s all the more reason to book the Night Vatican Museums Tour Including Sistine Chapel as it’s such an exclusive tour.

15. Rome: Evening City Tour by Golf Cart with Gelato

A picture of some ruins in Rome at night which you can see during one of these Rome night tours.

⭐ RATING: 4.5 out of 5 Stars (270+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 2.5 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW

Last but by no means least of these Rome night tours, is the Rome: Evening City Tour by Golf Cart with Gelato which offers exactly what it says on the tin. An evening tour of Rome on a golf cart with some gelato included too. What more can you ask for?

night tour roma

Golf cart tours of Rome are actually quite popular, but not something many people know about before getting to Rome. But taking a golf cart tour at night is an even better tour.

Since golf carts are only so big, the tour group is small meaning you have a much more personal experience and can ask the guide as many questions as you like.

The carts are pretty nippy so you can get between the sights quite quickly. And of course, it’s also pretty fun to just drive around in a golf cart. The best part of playing golf in my opinion.

It’s a night to remember , and it’s topped off in the perfect way with some tasty gelato. I can’t think of many better ways to end a night than that, can you?

And it’s always great when the guide is happy to take photos. It’s one of the best things about taking a tour, you are guaranteed to get some cracking photos . And trust me, Rome is one of the best places in the world to get photos.

Sound good? Book your spot on the Rome: Evening City Tour by Golf Cart with Gelato to explore Rome in a golf buggy!

Rome Night Tours: FAQ

Below are some questions related to Rome night tours along with my answers.

Absolutely, 100% yes! Visiting the Vatican Museums during the day is great, it’s cool being able to see so many iconic pieces of art. But exploring the museums at night, with only a handful of people around is special. Imagine being one of only 20 people in the Sistine Chapel instead of one of 1000. Taking a night tour is magical.

Yes, you can walk around Rome at night. If you like Rome during the day, you will love Rome at night. All of the main sights are lit up and glow against the dark night sky. It’s a magical and special feeling walking through Rome at night. And it’s pretty safe too.

VIP Colosseum at Night Tour with Underground & Arena Floor

Start your Colosseum night tour at the Teatro di Marcello as evening falls over Rome.

 • Tour the Colosseum at night, complete with VIP access to special areas usually closed to the public.
 • Visit the Colosseum underground, step onto the arena floor, and admire the silence of general access areas in the peaceful evening atmosphere.
 • Explore in the company of an insightful guide and a maximum of 24 guests, allowing you to have an even more intimate experience at this spectacular stadium.

Preview the experience

Tour description, tour the colosseum at night after the gates have officially closed for the day..

A Colosseum night tour is one of the most exclusive and enjoyable ways to visit Rome's most famous ruin. The crowds are smaller, the views are better, and the experience is much more intimate. You'll experience the arena in all its glory as you explore the nearly empty arena with your expert guide telling hair-raising tales of its bloody past. Your experience won't just be more intimate, it will be much more comfortable now that the sun has gone down.

You'll start your Colosseum night tour in the historic Jewish Quarter. Take a look at the Teatro di Marcello—an ancient amphitheater that looks like a miniature Colosseum—before making your way towards the main event. Along the way, you'll pass by Piazza Venezia, seeing the monument that represents new Rome and new Italy—and by far one of the most beautiful buildings in Rome to be seen at night. Once you arrive at a scenic vantage point overlooking the Roman Forum, your guide will tell you tales from the empire, whose reach you won't believe.

Trace the story of gladiators underneath the Colosseum and out on the arena floor.

Just as the last of the daytime crowds empty out, you'll step into the magnificent Colosseum itself. You'll head up into the stands first for an introductory stroll around Rome's most iconic monument, hearing stories of its origin and initial purpose. Without the hustle and bustle of the daytime crowds, you'll experience the Colosseum at its most serene, and get a sense of what the atmosphere was like nearly 2,000 years ago—an experience few visitors can claim to have had.

The next stop on the Colosseum night tour is a true VIP experience. You'll head down into the underground area below the Colosseum, where animals and gladiators awaited their turn to fight. The underground may only be visited on pre-booked tours with a limited number of participants, so this is a rare opportunity! Combined with the later entrance time, this makes our Colosseum night tour the most exclusive Colosseum visit available—as well as the most enjoyable.

Finally, you’ll experience your own "Gladiator" moment on the arena floor. Make your way there alongside an official Colosseum guard who will unlock a special gate, swinging it open to reveal that iconic walkway onto the floor. Walk in the footsteps of gladiators as you step out on to the arena floor and scream “Are you not entertained?” into the empty amphitheater (if you so please). This is the most incredible vantage point in the Colosseum, so take your time to soak it up.

Journey through Ancient Rome in a small group of 24 people or fewer.

Seeing the Colosseum in general may be an opportunity that only comes once in a lifetime—and having it all to yourself at night definitely is! Perfect for families, for those who don't like the heat of day, and for visitors who want a different experience, our VIP Colosseum Night Tour is one of our most atmospheric experiences. High demand and limited availability often mean that this tour sells out months in advance, so book now to secure your place! Trust us when we say that this is an experience you'll cherish for decades to come.

Please note: Due to high demand and restricted access, the entrance time at the Colosseum may be granted between 7:15pm and 10:30pm the day of your tour. We will confirm the start time of your tour about 30 days prior to the tour date.

Last year I was in Rome and did a Coliseum tour in the day . . . I didn’t want to go again after that experience but my family wanted to. I am so glad I did! The night tour was a completely different experience and 100% worth it! Going at night without the intense crowds and not in the heat of the day made it so much easier to immerse yourself into the experience and enjoy the information received. You could actually start to think of what it was like so long ago. Book this tour well in advance, you won’t be sorry!

Great experience highly recommended

We had the unique opportunity to do the Nighttime Underground Tour of the Colosseum and it was a magical memory! The details in how our guide was able to bring to life the way that the exhibitions were constructed was incredible. We fully support this tour! (4 adults & 2 kids 6yo & 10yo)

14 Epic Rome Night Tours for 2024

Rome, Italy is a magnificent capital city- it is full of history, amazing food, and beautiful views. We have spent weeks exploring Rome and still discover new favorite places beyond the most famous iconic sights. Rome is especially beautiful at night when the monuments light up, and the crowds have diminished. A Rome night tour is a fantastic way to see another side of this stunning city.

We spent six weeks in Italy during our Family Year Out, when our kids were 5 and 7. We loved exploring Rome, from touring the Colosseum to eating as much pizza and pasta as possible. As full-time travelers, we have returned several times, including to check out the Christmas markets and festive lights.

Rome has a lovely temperate climate- which makes visiting any time of year a great idea. However, in the summer, it can be quite hot, and taking advantage of the cool evenings to tour Rome at night is a great way to explore the Eternal City. During the cooler Fall and Winter months, the sun sets earlier and an evening tour of Rome is a great activity before dinner.

A night tour of Rome also provides peace of mind when venturing out after dark. While Rome is a very safe city, many people feel more comfortable being out late with a group than on their own.

In this post, we’ll cover the best night tours of Rome- from night walking tours to Vespa tours, tours of the Vatican, and other specialized tours. There’s sure to be a night tour of Rome that will be the highlight of your next trip to Rome!

The Colosseum is one of the 7 New Wonders of the World- a UNESCO World Heritage Site you don’t want to miss! I visited the Colosseum without a guide (mistake), and on a “kid-friendly tour” as a family, which was better, but not amazing.

The great thing about this night tour is you get the ambiance of the Colosseum at night, fewer crowds, and access to the lower level, which is one of the cooler parts of the Colosseum.

This tour does not include the upper levels of the Colosseum, you’ll need to visit during the day to see those. The group can accommodate up to 25 travelers.

Why Take a Tour of Rome at Night?

We love night tours of Rome as an easy way to see some much of Rome. Here are a few of the top reasons to take a tour of Rome at night!

Rome can get hot. In the evenings, you’ll watch the sky fade to a beautiful sunset, and then the city will light up around you and you’ll enjoy cool evening breezes. And winter, when the sun sets earlier, even families with young kids can take a night tour to experience the magic of Rome at night and still not be out too late.

Fewer Crowds

In every season, the evening and night hours are less crowded than the daytime. Don’t worry though, Rome is still a lively place at night! Take advantage of after-hours to see major sites like the Colosseum, or enjoy a delicious food tour of Rome.

Making Friends

There are private tours available if you’d like to customize your night tour of Rome, but we always enjoy meeting new people on small group tours.

Expertise of a Local Guide

All of these tours provide background on Rome and the history of the city so you’ll learn something and get context for what you are seeing. In such a large city, it’s tempting to DIY your visit, but with a local guide, you’ll really appreciate the history of Rome, and know that you aren’t missing any details!

Safety at Night

Rome is a very safe city, and you should be safe walking around at night in the tourist districts. However, we always appreciate the added safety that numbers bring, and being on a tour means you don’t have to worry about where you are, or how you are getting home (and whether your cell phone is charged).

Exteriors Only

Most night tours of Rome will take you to see the outside of churches and monuments, as well as to viewpoints around the city. While many tours stop at the Colosseum for photos and to talk about the UNESCO World Heritage Site, most tours do not enter the Colosseum. The same holds true for the Roman Forum and other major sites.

Rome is magical, lit up at night- the monuments that Rome is famous for, from the Pantheon to the Trevi Fountain, all look different at night. Evening is also a great time to take a walking tour focused on the darker side of the city, or to explore the Roman catacombs and learn about hidden religious practices.

Even in the colder months, the cafes still put tables out on the sidewalks, with the addition of heat lamps and blankets in case you need them. We loved wandering around in the evenings when we visited in December. With twinkling lights and cozy cafes, this is a city that embraces the evenings all year round.

Rome is a magical city. It’s beautiful at any time of the day, but after the sun goes down, the crowds leave and the city lights up, it becomes even more charming.

The most popular Rome by night tours

I thought I’d kick off this guide with the most popular Rome by night tours. These are the ones with the most and highest reviews, which are guaranteed to be a great addition on any Italy itinerary .

Vatican at Night Tour

Tour highlights:

 • Skip-the-line tickets to the Vatican Museums are always a bonus
 • You’ll get to visit the Sistine Chapel
 • It’s three hours, so there’s plenty of time to soak it all up
 • Knowledgeable professional guide to talk you through the frescoes and various rooms
 • You can see these incredible sights at night with fewer people

This tour takes you on an adventure into the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel under the cover of darkness. This Vatican night tour begins by meeting your guide and heading inside with a skip-the-line ticket.

Especially if you only have two days in Rome , this tour is great as it will save you loads of time.

Visiting the Vatican by day means huge crowds, even with skip-the-line tickets, so visiting at night is the best way to avoid queues.

During the three-hour evening tour, your guide will show you the amazing artefacts on display at the Vatican Museums.

These include the stunning Gallery of the Candelabra, the intriguing Gallery of Maps, the Gallery of Tapestries and the (rightly) world-famous Raphael Rooms and their incredible frescoes.

Speaking of frescoes, it’s then time to step inside the awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel to gaze at Michelangelo’s masterpieces in their full glory.

It’s not hard to be impressed with the sights on offer during this night-time Roman excursion.

Rome Colosseum Night Tour

 • Great for balmy Roman summer nights as it’s mainly outside
 • Walk around the arena floor where the gladiators actually stepped
 • Spot graffiti from the middle ages
 • See the once bustling market place around Trajan’s Column
 • Learn about the religious and official structures at the Roman Forum

In the daytime, the Colosseum is a spectacular structure but come night, this ancient Roman ruin becomes a magical sight to behold, as it’s illuminated dramatically.

The tour actually doesn’t start at the Colosseum, but instead at the Colonna Traiana (aka Trajan’s Column), which overlooks the Roman Forum.

This tour is a great choice for those who only have one day in Rome , as it allows you to see one of the main attractions in Rome without wasting time in a queue.

The Colosseum in Rome at sunset

You’ll then move on to the Roman Forum itself – free of its usual crowds in the daytime, it’s somehow easier to imagine how it might have been in its heyday.

Then this Rome Colosseum night tour comes into its own as your guide whisks you to the main event itself. Entering the Colosseum, the illuminations highlight the grand stadium.

You’ll be able to see details like historic graffiti, imagine what it must have been like for gladiators back in the day, and snap pictures of the whole thing without tourist crowds getting in your shots.

If you can, I would pair this tour with a hotel near the Colosseum . That way you can relax in your apartment during the day, overlooking this iconic Roman sight, and then head out to explore it once the tourist crowds leave.

Vespa Tour of Rome By Night

 • Getting to ride around on a vintage Vespa scooter is awesome
 • You’re actually in a sidecar, meaning you can sit back and relax (kind of!)
 • Stopping for gelato and coffee like a real Roman
 • Having a professional guide to show you the ropes
 • See a long list of iconic sights lit up

There’s no more iconic way to get around Rome than on the equally iconic Vespa (like in Roman Holiday , the iconic travel movie ), and what makes it even more magical is doing so at night time.

It’s your chance to explore the Italian capital in style on a vintage Vespa, it’s a bit on the higher end price wise, but if your Italy trip budget allows for it, this experience will be well worth it!

When I first moved to Rome by then boyfriend took me on a scooter tour of Rome at night . I can confidently say it was one of the best evenings we spent in Rome, and it made me fall in love with the city.

Scootering around Rome - that's the Colosseum behind us!

Scootering around Rome – that’s the Colosseum behind us!

This Rome-by-night tour begins when you get picked up at your accommodation – on a Vespa, of course. Then you’ll don your helmet and head off around Rome while it’s illuminated at night like an open-air museum.

Because you’ve got your own set of wheels, you’ll be able to pack in more sights than you would on a walking tour.

These include Piazza Navona, St Peter’s Square, the Pantheon, Piazza Venezia, the Spanish Steps, the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Circus Maximus, the Aventine Keyhole and the Janiculum Hill (one of the best viewpoints in Rome )!

Basically, it’s a little bit of everything – except on a Vespa. A super fun way to see the city.

Rome foodie tours by night

And after the most popular tours of Rome by night, we can’t help but move on to the foodie tours on offer!

Italians love good food, so obviously combining a foodie experience at one of the best places to eat in Rome , with a sightseeing tour of the Eternal City is a must on any Rome itinerary , regardless of how many days you spend in Rome .

Rome Night Tour with Pizza and Gelato

 • Throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain as you pass
 • Taste some freshly made (and highly recommended) pizza
 • Sample some of the best gelato in Italy
 • See the Colosseum and the Pantheon , among other sights, lit up night
 • Soak up the nocturnal buzz of Pizza Navona

Arguably the best Rome night tours are those that involve food, and this one is a great way to sample some of the city’s best savoury and sweet foodstuffs: namely, pizza and gelato.

Enjoying pizza in Italy

Enjoying pizza in Italy

The tour starts by sampling authentically made pizza at a local restaurant, before heading off to explore the city’s outdoor cafes and buzzing eateries with your guide.

Along the way, you’ll pass by some of the city’s most famous sights, including the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon.

Then it’s off to sample some truly delectable gelato – a great way to round off your trip (the guide for this tour believes it to be the best gelato in Italy!).

Given the ice cream menu, it’s obviously more fun if you’re visiting Rome in spring or summer , but the tour is actually available year round, so you could do it also if you’re visiting Italy and Rome in winter .

This truly is the tour for those who love their food: it’s four hours of dipping in and out of cafes, trattorias and enotecas.

During the tour, you’ll get to taste around 20 different dishes as you go. It all starts with an aperitivo (naturally) at a La Nicchia Cafe, which specialises in mozzarella. Then it’s onwards to try out some creative pizza at Pizzarium.

After this, you’ll make a beeline to Paciotti: a gourmet food shop where you’ll get to sample salami, cheeses and wines. Finally, you’ll head to a local eatery for Roman pasta and more wine – with a finale of tiramisu, of course.

Rome’s Trastevere district is where it’s at for nighttime fun. Packed full of bars and restaurants, this is a local hotspot once the sun sets.

The best way to get to know this traditionally working-class neighbourhood is through its food and wine. Luckily for you, this Rome evening tour allows you to dig deep into the foodie credentials of this district.

Your knowledgeable guide will first take you to a new street food hotspot: Trapizzino (a twist on pizza and traditional triangular sandwiches served at bars).

Then it’s on to Essenza Wine Bar for cheeses, cured meats and – of course – some wine.

Passing by Santa Maria in Trastevere, you’ll head off for some wood-fired pizza (and some more wine), before finishing off the night with some artisanal gelato. It doesn’t get much better than this!

Now, the Colosseum needs no introduction. I mean, it’s the quintessential symbol of Rome.

Constructed between 72 and 80 AD, the gigantic amphitheater hosted gladiatorial games, theatrical performances, and public executions.

Now, sure, you can visit the Colosseum during the day. However, if you want to escape the swarms of tourists, this epic Colosseum Under the Moonlight Walking Tour runs after the attraction has closed.

Essentially, the guided tour of the Colosseum at night lasts 2 hours – the perfect amount of time to complete a full circuit around this mighty arena.

“It was so good to have a better understanding of the history of Rome and see how everything merged together over time. This isn’t only a visit to the Colosseum, they will walk you around the surrounding area and explain how everything falls into place before you go in and see the magnificent structure under the night sky. Flávio, our guide your, was knowledgeable, fun and very approachable making the experience a lot better! Of course, you’ll want to see the Vatican City and see if the Sistine Chapel lives up to the hype during your 2 days in Rome .

But, what you don’t want to do is experience it at “rush hour” with hordes of other groups. Trust me. I did this and it felt like I was in a herd of cattle being led through the museum.

Therefore, this Vatican at Night Exclusive Small Group Tour occurs after official closing hours, when far fewer people are in the building.

“Deborah took us through the wonders and secrets of the Vatican Museums on a night tour . An extraordinary experience thanks to the impressive knowledge of our guide, his patience and his “contagious” love of the place. We even had the right to bonus explanations on the Place St-Pierre. A must do if you are staying on a Friday night in Rome. Grazie mille per tutto Deborah!” Alexandre ( read more reviews now )

And that’s because this is one of the best Rome at night tours that starts at 7:30 pm sharp. And you’ll begin with a wander through the Vatican Museums.

Here, you’ll see priceless works of art and sculptures including Lacoön and His Sons and Apollo Belvedere.

★ RATING: Over 2000+ 5-star ratings | ? TOUR LENGTH: 2.75 hours | ✓ Book now

If you’re planning a trip to Rome and the Colosseum is on your must-see list, I highly recommend the Take Walks VIP Colosseum at night tour .

I took this tour myself ( read about it here ), and it was a truly brilliant experience. Take Walks are Italy experts (I’ve taken a number of their tours in various cities) and this Colosseum tour is meticulously planned to offer a unique, crowd-free exploration of one of the world’s most iconic landmarks.

With a maximum group size of just 24 people , the tour provides an intimate setting that’s perfect for delving deep into the Colosseum’s history and architecture, with headsets also provided for when you want to dilly-dally a bit.

While the tour visits a number of other sites as you make your way to the main even, the highlight for me was the Colosseum Underground tour.

Walking through these ancient chambers with only a handful of people around, you get a palpable sense of the Colosseum’s inner mechanics—where gladiators and wild animals were once hoisted up to the arena floor. It’s a surreal experience, heightened by the absence of the usual daytime crowds.

Stepping onto the arena floor, you’re greeted by the Colosseum’s grandeur, magnificently lit up against the Roman night sky. It’s a view that leaves you speechless, offering a perspective that few get to see.

In terms of the other sites visited, these include a Roman Forum overlook, Capitoline Hill, and the exterior of Teatro di Marcello. Each adds another layer to your understanding of ancient Rome and our tour guide regaled interesting stories in a highly entertaining and engaging way.

The tour has garnered over 2000+ 5-star ratings , and it’s easy to see why. The only drawback is that the tour runs on limited days and sells out fast (and that’s the only reason why I haven’t included as my number 1 pick ) – so if you like what you see and it’s available on your dates I’d recommend that you book it, pronto!

Reviews: “This was a highlight of our entire Italy trip. I had seen the Colosseum before, but not like this: at night, no crowds, walking through the floor area. Both of our tour guides were awesome: starting downtown Rome and then walking along the Forum, and then going into the Colosseum. Everything was very well planned out and both guides were engaging, entertaining, and very informative. Being in the Colosseum at night with no crowds really was surreal. Highly recommended” – Thomas, April 27, 2023 Read more reviews here.

4. Rome: Colosseum Floor Twilight Tour & Imperial Forum Visit

If you’re looking to explore Rome’s iconic Colosseum in a unique light, this twilight tour offers a captivating experience.

With the benefit of the last entrance of the day, you’ll get to stand in the gladiator’s arena at sunset, a moment that’s sure to leave a lasting impression. The tour also includes a walk down Via de Fori Imperiali and a visit to Trajan’s Column, giving you a comprehensive view of Rome’s ancient history.

One thing I particularly like about this tour is its focus on the lesser-known aspects of Ancient Rome.

Your guide will delve into the politics, gossip, and secrets of the era, adding layers of depth to the stunning ruins and palaces you’ll be exploring. The tour is quite comprehensive, covering not just the Colosseum but also the Imperial Forum, all in the enchanting twilight hours.

However, it’s worth noting that the tour is not suitable for wheelchair users and has a maximum capacity of 48 travellers – which is a little larger than other tours on this list.

Also, the Roman Forum and the Imperial Forum visits are from the outside, so if you’re keen on an in-depth exploration of these sites, this might not be the tour for you (although do bear in mind that none of these night tours of the Colosseum actually enter the Roman Forum either).

Reviews: “Exceptional, informative, most interesting in terms of historical and social issues of the times. Architectural wonder of its time from engineers without any design degrees! All of this and more. With the twilight lighting, provided fantastic views of the arena, the holes in the walls and the floor. So much to the imagination! Highly recommend tour. Additionally, the tour included the nearby structures of the Forum and their political history. So much knowledge from our guide.” – Peter, September 19, 2023 Read more reviews here.

5. Rome: Colosseum Under the Moonlight Walking Tour with Ticket

★ RATING: 4.4/5 Stars | ? TOUR LENGTH: 2 hours | ✓ Book now

If you’re looking for an intimate and exclusive experience of Rome’s Colosseum, this moonlight walking tour is worthy of your consideration.

The tour offers the unique opportunity to explore the Colosseum’s underground chambers and arena floor, areas that are typically off-limits to the general public.

What sets this tour apart is that it allows only one group at a time during the night, making the experience truly special. It does, however, only run Thursday through Saturday.

I think the exclusivity of this tour is its strongest point.

in a small group, you’ll get to walk in the footsteps of gladiators, explore the underground chambers where wild animals were once caged, and stand on the arena floor where epic combats took place—all without the daytime crowds.

The tour is led by knowledgeable guides who bring the history of this iconic structure to life, adding a layer of depth to the experience.

However, it’s important to note that this tour is not suitable for people with mobility impairments or those in wheelchairs. Also, the tour strictly prohibits large bags, backpacks, and suitcases, so plan accordingly.

Reviews: “What an excellent way to spend an evening, we had the best tour guide he was an Italian elderly gentleman with class! He knew his stuff and was very interesting. The second half was a younger girl who was also very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. The evening made it cooler; my partner and I found the whole experience enjoyable. At the meeting point, they give you 30 minutes from check-in to meet. A café and bar next door to enjoy the view with a beer or coffee before you leave. Prepare for a lot of walking in Rome, all activities, not just this one.” – Benjamin, June 26, 2023 Read more reviews here.

What to keep in mind when choosing a Colosseum night tour

When planning your Colosseum night tour, there are several important factors to keep in mind.

These factors I have gathered both from my own experience of taking a night tour at the Colosseum, as well as some discoveries and commonalities I’ve noticed when sifting through tours for this blog post.

Check Tour Times and Days:

Tour schedules can change seasonally, and they may vary from what I’ve mentioned above. It’s essential to verify the current tour times and available days to ensure they align with your visit to Rome.

You can do this by clicking through on one of the links I’ve included in each of the relevant tours’ write ups.

Book in Advance:

Colosseum night tours tend to sell out well in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons. To secure your spot, I recommend booking your chosen tour weeks ahead of your planned visit to avoid disappointment.

Several tours I’ve included above are quite similar, so it may just come down to availability. I’ve tried to only include tours in this list that have good customer ratings, so if you see some availability in any of the tours above – nab your place on that tour!

RELATED READING | Rome After Dark: Top Nighttime Activities

Day Restrictions:

Some tour companies may have specific days when they are permitted to run Colosseum night tours. To find a tour that fits your schedule, you might need to explore different providers or adjust your plans accordingly.

Group Combining:

Inside the Colosseum, tour guides seem to be hired directly by the site and may be different from your initial guide – and it doesn’t seem like the tour companies have much, if any control over this.

Be prepared for the possibility of smaller groups from different tours being combined if your entry time coincides with another group’s.

While this may differ from what you’re expecting, you may just need to take a deep breath, embrace the Italian way of doing things and go with the flow.

Manage Expectations:

Reading reviews, you may come across some hit or miss feedback on various tour listings. This can be attributed to the Colosseum’s status as one of the world’s most heavily visited tourist sites.

From what I can tell, many issues arise from visitors not thoroughly reading the tour details or experiencing communication challenges (i.e. not checking their emails). They then proceed to take out the frustrations of their mistake against the tour provider, and leave them a lousy review.

Be an informed traveller, read the fine print, and understand what your chosen tour includes to avoid any surprises. Remember, it’s better to enjoy the experience than to become the tourist who complains on review websites like TripAdvisor.

Make sure to weigh up the good reviews alongside any negative reviews you see before making your choice.

Colosseum Night Tour

The Colosseum's night routine in ancient times

The sun is setting behind Aventine Hill, and the crowds are slowly leaving the Colosseum. People usually did not wait until dark because the streets were unsafe at night. In the meantime, the „employees” of the Colosseum, mostly slaves, begin to prepare for the next day.

Their job was not easy or pleasant, as they had to clean up all the mess left from the fighting. That means removing dead animals and body parts from the arena floor and replacing blood-stained sand with new sand. But also cleaning the stairs and audience seats with leftovers from food and drinks.

Below the arena, in the tunnels, cages, and chambers of the hypogeum (the underground), animals were being groomed for tomorrow's fights - those that made it through the day alive anyway. A corridor away, gladiators were tending to their injuries. A physician, most likely a barber, is also on hand to help stitch some of the bigger wounds.

Here's an interesting little nugget of history: gladiators who were victorious had their sweat collected in small vials. The reason? It was considered an aphrodisiac, and there was a lucrative market for it!

If you want to hear more of such stories and what went on during the night in and around the Colosseum, ask your guide, who will be more than happy to answer your questions.

 • After 16 years of working as a tour guide in Rome , I've figured out the best attractions.
 • I always recommend visiting the Park of the Aqueducts and the Ostia Antica archeological site.
 • But I think the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, and Mouth of Truth attractions are overcrowded.

Rome is pretty crowded — the city welcomed a record-breaking 35 million tourists in 2023. Any gorgeous photos you see of breathtaking and empty piazzas were likely taken long before most people have woken up.

As a seasoned Roman tour guide for the past 16 years, I would never say certain attractions have no merit. But after years of interacting with travelers , I understand that people want alternatives.

Luckily, Rome has priceless art and artifacts around every corner.

Here are five popular attractions that are worth visiting, and five you might want to skip.

Located on Capitoline Hill, the Capitoline Museums offer a treasure trove of ancient Roman art and artifacts.

Despite their historical significance as some of the oldest public museums in the world, they're often overlooked by tourists.

The well-curated collections include masterpieces by renowned artists like Michelangelo and Caravaggio, ancient bronzes, and frescoes. The Capitoline Museums offer plenty of art and archeological finds.

Located on Capitoline Hill, the Capitoline Museums offer a treasure trove of ancient Roman art and artifacts.

Despite their historical significance as some of the oldest public museums in the world , they're often overlooked by tourists.

The well-curated collections include masterpieces by renowned artists like Michelangelo and Caravaggio, ancient bronzes, and frescoes. It's a must-visit for any art enthusiast seeking a quieter, more intimate experience.

Don't miss the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano.

As one of Rome's four major basilicas, San Giovanni in Laterano (also known as the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran) boasts a stunning display of baroque architecture and intricate frescoes.

It may not be as famous as some of Rome's other churches, but its grandeur and historical importance as the oldest papal basilica in the city make it a hidden gem worth exploring.

The Park of the Aqueducts is beautiful and full of history.

Escape the crowds and stagnant air of the city center and venture into a tranquil Park of the Aqueducts (Parco degli Acquedotti).

There's incredible art in the Basilica of Sant’Agostino.

A Roman vacation isn't complete without a trip to Ostia Antica.

Step back in time and explore the remarkably well-preserved ruins of Ostia Antica, Rome's ancient seaport.

The archaeological site offers a quieter and less time-consuming alternative to the crowds of Pompeii a little farther south. Visitors can wander through ancient streets, houses, and Roman theaters in a more peaceful setting than the Roman Forum.

Plus, you can enjoy a seafood lunch overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea after your visit .

On the other hand, the Vatican Museums are overcrowded.

Although the Vatican Museums are undeniably home to some of the world's most renowned art collections, they're almost always swarming with tourists.

The crowds and long queues can detract from your overall experience. In peak season , the Vatican easily sees 20,000 to 30,000 visitors a day.

It's virtually impossible to admire the art as you're shuttled through each gallery until everyone spills into the Sistine Chapel . Even the bathroom lines can be a 30-minute wait.

Unless you are willing to spend a lot of money on an official tour before the museums are open to the public or visit in the offseason , you should consider alternative attractions.

You can get a good view of the Colosseum without going inside.

As iconic as it may be, the Colosseum can be overwhelming, particularly during peak tourist seasons .

Its historical significance is undeniable, but exploring the ancient amphitheater can be a challenge among the swarms of visitors.

Acquiring tickets is also tricky. We often have to time our online purchases perfectly, refreshing the page in 10-minute intervals. Tickets sell out quickly and are sometimes resold by large companies.

Consider alternative viewpoints or guided tours for a more personalized experience. I also like taking in the exterior around 9 a.m. or in the evening when it lights up.

Walking the Appian Way might be a letdown.

The Appian Way is significant in Roman history as the oldest and most important road. But its appeal may be lost on the average tourist.

Nowadays, there are loads of bike and bus tours to the Catacombs along the road — making it crowded — and public transport there is difficult.

I suggest visiting the Park of the Aqueducts instead. It's an easy metro ride from Termini Station and offers a glimpse into what the Roman countryside would've been like.

Although undeniably one of Rome's most famous landmarks, the Trevi Fountain is often teeming with tourists jostling for the perfect selfie.

The sheer volume of visitors can detract from the fountain's beauty and significance, making it challenging to appreciate it in peace.

If you insist on throwing a coin in, go as early in the morning as possible — otherwise, it's a zoo.

Everyone wants a photo in front of the Trevi Fountain — and that's the problem.

Although undeniably one of Rome's most famous landmarks , the Trevi Fountain is often teeming with tourists jostling for the perfect selfie.

The sheer volume of visitors can detract from the fountain's beauty and significance, making it challenging to appreciate it in peace.

If you insist on throwing a coin in, go as early in the morning as possible — otherwise, it's a zoo.

Made famous by its appearance in classic films like "Roman Holiday," the Mouth of Truth may not live up to the hype for many visitors.

According to medieval legend, the stone mask will bite off the hand of any liar who enters its mouth, which has made it popular with tourists.

But the brief photo opportunity doesn't justify the long queues. I wouldn't wait in line for the Mouth of Truth.

Plus, it was probably just used as a drain cover in the Temple of Hercules.
