Icelandic volcano on Reykjanes Peninsula erupts for fifth time since December

A volcano in Iceland has erupted for the fifth time since December, shooting lava 50 metres into the air along a fissure that authorities say is more than 3 kilometres long.

Local media reported that a state of emergency had been declared by the Icelandic police force.

Icelandic authorities sent notices to locals and workers in the town of Grindavik, warning of an impending eruption Wednesday morning local time.

Bright orange lava spews from the ground in a long line, with smoke and ash billowing into the sky

People were evacuated from the town and the nearby tourist hotspot Blue Lagoon geothermal pool just before midday, following an earthquake in the area.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said the lava "jets are reaching a height of at least 50 metres and the length of the fissure is about 3.4km long" in a statement on Wednesday afternoon, local time.

It said the coast guard helicopter was surveying the area to get a more accurate understanding of the eruption's size and location.

French tourist Maia Biegatch, had just arrived at the Blue Lagoon when the eruption occurred.

"We received alerts on our phones telling us to 'evacuate, evacuate', so we turned back," she told AFP.

"It was a total surprise."

Authorities had warned of the risk of renewed volcanic activity in the Reykjanes Peninsula, just south of the capital Reykjavik, as studies showed magma accumulated underground.

The IMO also recorded some 400 earthquakes in the area of the volcano's crater in the past week.

Iceland's Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management said on social media that despite the call to leave, three residents remained in Grindavik — something it described as "not advisable".

The lava flow was heavy, estimated at between 1,500 and 2,000 cubic metres per second, the IMO said.

While authorities said that seismic activity had decreased significantly, it said lava had reached defences built to the west of Grindavik that were built to protect the town from eruptions.

Similar man-made barriers have been built to steer lava away from infrastructure including the Svartsengi geothermal power plant and the Blue Lagoon geothermal pool.

The latest event follows the end of another eight-week-long eruption on the peninsula that saw molten rock spew from the ground.

The fiery spectacle underlines the challenges the island nation of almost 400,000 people face as scientists have warned eruptions could happen over and over in Reykjanes for decades or even centuries.

The eruption was the eighth on the peninsula, home to some 30,000 people, since 2021 when geological systems that were dormant for some 800 years again became active.

Previous incidents had disrupted district heating, closed key roads and even razed several houses in Grindavik, where only a few residents have since returned.

Fire burns on ground in front of a collection of white buildings, with one building on fire.

Icelanders often refer to their country as the "Land of Fire and Ice" as a tribute to its otherworldly landscape forged by glaciers and volcanoes. Iceland is positioned between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, making it a seismic hotbed.

While a 2010 eruption in a different part of Iceland grounded some 100,000 flights internationally due to huge ash clouds, Reykjanes is typically home to fissure outbreaks which do not reach into the stratosphere.

As AI deepfakes cause havoc during other elections, experts warn the UK's politicians should be prepared.

"Just tell me what you had for breakfast", says Mike Narouei, of ControlAI, recording on his laptop. I speak for around 15 seconds, about my toast, coffee and journey to their offices.

Within seconds, I hear my own voice, saying something entirely different.

In this case, words I have written: "Deepfakes can be extremely realistic and have the ability to disrupt our politics and damage our trust in the democratic process."

We have used free software, it hasn't taken any advanced technical skills, and the whole thing has taken next to no time at all.

This is an audio deepfake - video ones take more effort to produce - and as well as being deployed by scammers of all kinds, there is deep concern, in a year with some two billion people going to the polls, in the US, India and dozens of other countries including the UK, about their impact on elections.

The last time there was a change in the main party of government an outgoing Labour minister famously left a note saying "I'm afraid there is no money". Never mind that, for the next five weeks until polls close at 10pm on 4 July the UK has no MPs.

At the stroke of midnight last Thursday all their writs expired. All those seeking to get into the Commons are now just prospective parliamentary candidates. They have until this Friday to make sure that their names are registered on the ballot paper.

Even if there are no gains and losses and not a single seat changes hands between the parties, the next parliament is certain to look very different from the last one.

So far 134 members of the 2019-2024 parliament have announced they will not be fighting them again. This means that a minimum of 20%, one in five, of the new MPs will be new faces.

Our flagship Sunday morning show, hosted by  Trevor Phillips , will be live on Sky News from 8.30am, and we have a packed line-up for you after this eventful first week of the campaign.

Trevor will be chatting to:

  • Yvette Cooper , Labour's shadow home secretary;
  • Victoria Atkins , health secretary;
  • Stephen Flynn , SNP Westminster leader;
  • Rhun ap Iorwerth , Plaid Cymru leader.

The Conservative government has pledged £1bn a year in a bid to increase the number of GP appointments in the UK.

The Tories say they would build both GP surgeries and community diagnostic centres if they were re-elected to government.

The party wants to build 100 new GP surgeries and modernise another 150.

However, this bears echoes of the 2019 promise to build 40 new hospitals by 2030 - something the government will not be able to do, according to the National Audit Office.

The report released last year found only 32 of the 40 new hospitals promised by Boris Johnson would be built by the end of the decade - and some may be too small.

Labour has announced its plans to reduce net migration - with Sir Keir Starmer accusing the Conservatives of having "repeatedly broken their promises" to get the number down.

It marks another attempt by the Labour Party to appeal to Conservative voters.

Figures published after Rishi Sunak called the general election showed a net of 685,000 arrived in the UK last year - down from a record of 764,000 in 2022.

The 2023 figure is still three times the number in 2019 when the last election took place. The Conservatives promised in their manifesto that year to get net migration down.

Good morning!

The tooth-and-nail fight for all 650 parliamentary seats, and the keys to Number 10, is well under way after parliament was officially dissolved on Thursday.

Political parties are spreading out across the country to get their message out ahead of polling day on 4 July.

Here's what you need to know as campaigning continues today:

Follow along in the morning as we keep up to date with the latest in 2024 General Election campaign.

The Liberal Democrats are announcing that they will "reverse Tory cuts" to the Public Health Grant and commit to investing £1bn a year as part of a key manifesto commitment.

The grant is paid to local authorities from the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) budget to provide preventative health services.

The party says there has been a 28% real-terms per person cut in the value of the Public Health Grant since 2015/16 - and that it has been cut in Rishi Sunak's Yorkshire seat by £5m.

Lib Dem deputy leader Daisy Cooper said in a statement that the Tories have "decimated public health funding, leaving Britain with a ticking time bomb of health challenges".

She went on: "The public health crisis in our country has Rishi Sunak's fingerprints all over it. He has slashed funding for vital local services that support children, failed to fix our crumbling hospitals and overseen a stark rise in health inequality.

"The Liberal Democrats would reverse these scandalous cuts and invest in empowering local communities and individuals to lead healthier lives."

In response, Health Secretary Victoria Atkins said all the Lib Dems have done during the campaign so far is "snipe from the sidelines and taken part in ridiculous gimmicks".

She said they would "prop up a Labour government" whose plans, in their view, have a £38.5bn "black hole".

"Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives have a clear plan and have taken bold action," she added.

The Conservative Party is pledging tonight to build 100 new GP surgeries if it wins the general election.

Rishi Sunak is also promising to modernise a further 150 existing surgeries, while also expanding his Pharmacy First pledge, saying more treatments would be available without needing to see a GP.

The expansion of the scheme would offer women more contraceptive options, deliver menopause support, and provide treatment for more conditions, such as acne and chest infections.

The Tories say that would free up 20 million GP appointments, once fully implemented.

They are also pledging an expansion of the Community Diagnostic Centres programme, building 50 more on top of the existing 160 which, they say, would expand capacity for another 2.5m checks and diagnostic tests.

The Tories say this will be paid for by cutting back the number of NHS managers to pre-pandemic levels and halving management consultancy spend across government, insisting the policy is "fully costed".

The pledge to build new GP surgeries is likely to raise eyebrows, however, after a "damning" report found that the government will not be able to deliver 40 new hospitals by 2030, as promised by the Tories at the last general election in 2019.

The National Audit Office (NAO) concluded that only 32 of the promised 40 hospitals would be delivered by 2030, due to the scheme being over-budget and hard to deliver ( read more from the report here ).

In a statement, Rishi Sunak said: "The NHS is one of our most important national assets and the Conservatives are taking the long-term decisions to secure its future.

"As part of our clear plan we are investing in community services making it quicker, easier and more convenient for patients to receive the care they need and help to relieve pressure on hospital services."

Hear more from Health Secretary Victoria Atkins live on Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips from 8.30am tomorrow.
