InsureandGo Australia was established in 2000 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Europ Assistance. It offers Australians different tiers of travel insurance–bare essentials, silver and gold–with all policies underwritten by Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company Limited.

InsureandGo is highly regarded by Australian travellers, receiving a score of 4.0 from 6,243 reviews on the leading consumer opinion site, ProductReview.

In the following review, Forbes Advisor has analysed InsureandGo’s Gold policy, as this is its most comprehensive policy available.

The InsureandGo Comprehensive Travel Insurance policy is available to all Australians up to the ripe old age of 100, with children up to 18 also included if they are travelling with parents or grandparents. (For cruise cover add-ons, Australians are only covered up to 79 years of age).

While InsureandGo won’t cover fraudulent credit card activity, it will cover credit card replacement. Additionally, there is personal liability cover up to $5 million and up to $8,000 for car hire excess cover.

There is unlimited cancellation cover with the InsureandGo Comprehensive Travel Insurance policy, however, there is no cover for missed connecting flights if the stopover on itinerary is less than six hours.

Lost Luggage

InsureandGo provides $15,000 in cover for lost luggage on its Gold policy. There are sub-limits that apply, including $3,000 for laptops, cameras, tablets, mobile phones and the like.

Customers can choose to increase cover limits for certain items if required.

Unlimited overseas medical expenses are included with InsureandGo travel insurance. This includes emergency surgery, ambulance costs or repatriation.

In regards to pre-existing medical conditions, the InsureandGo website claims that “most conditions” are covered by the policy. However, a medical assessment is required to determine whether cover will be provided, rather than being automatically included in the policy.

Is Dental Cover Included in Medical?

InsureandGo does not include dental in its unlimited medical cover, but it does still provide cover for emergency dental treatment up to the value of $500.

Does it Cover Me for Covid?

Yes, overseas medical expenses related to Covid-19 are covered. Cancellations or trip interruptions due to Covid are also covered for the policyholder and their travelling companions, up to the value of $5,000.

What about Pregnancy?

Pregnancy is included within the unlimited medical cover, with complications of pregnancy and childbirth also covered–but only until week 30 of the pregnancy for individual babies. For multiple babies (such as if you are pregnant with twins), InsureandGo will only provide cover until week 20.

What about Sports and Activities?

InsureandGo provides automatic cover for 90 different sports and activities, which are laid out within its product disclosure statemen t. There are additional activities that may be covered, but only if certain criteria are met.

The excess payable also varies from sport to sport, so it is essential for travellers looking to partake in sports and activities while abroad to carefully review the InsureandGo PDS.

Examples of activities that will not be covered under any circumstance by InsureandGo include cliff diving, paragliding, running with the bulls and more. InsureandGo states in its PDS that its list of excluded activities is “not a definitive list”, and rather is “intended to provide examples of sports and activities where cover is not available under this policy in any circumstances”.

To be covered for snow sports, travellers will need to purchase the additional snow sports cover.

Customer Service

InsureandGo provides 24/7 emergency assistance to its customers, providing peace of mind if you are overseas and are in need.

For general enquiries, InsureandGo has a non-emergency phone number as well as an email, both of which are monitored from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

The company states that it is currently in the process of upgrading its Claims Website, which means at the time of writing, customers need to submit claims via email after following the instructions online.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is there an insureandgo discount code.

No, at the time of writing, InsureandGo does not have any active discount codes. The InsureandGo website states that it often updates its promo codes via Facebook, so all prospective customers should check the InsureandGo Facebook page before purchasing a policy to see if a discount is available.

You can find all InsureandGo’s policy documents, also known as product disclosure statements (PDS), online here .

InsureandGo says the PDS’ available on their website are the most up-to-date documents.

“In order to download the PDS which is applicable to your policy based on the date of purchase, login into your account and you will find the exact document,” the website states.

Can I buy travel insurance with InsureandGo after booking?

mitsui sumitomo travel insurance reviews

Congratulations, InsureandGo!

InsureandGo received the following awards in the 2023 Product Awards:

  • 'Travel Insurance - Domestic' - Winner
  • 'Travel Insurance - Comprehensive' - Highly Commended

InsureandGo is one of a growing list of providers that offer some cover for Covid-19. Here are some of the main benefits you'll find under its Silver and Gold policies:

  • Overseas medical expenses, including emergency medical, surgical, hospital, ambulance and repatriation costs where necessary.
  • Cancellation or trip disruption costs if you, a close relative or a travelling companion are diagnosed with Covid-19 after purchasing the policy.
  • Additional travel and accommodation expenses incurred after departure where you need to catch up to your original schedule.

If you want to compare how other insurers handle Covid-19 claims, we've outlined some of the providers that cover pandemic-related expenses .

InsureandGo has three different plans to choose from: Bare Essentials, Silver and Gold. You can purchase these plans either as a Domestic policy for travel within Australia or One Trip for international travel. Further to this, InsureandGo also offers separate policies for cruise travel and backpackers.

Here are some of the key insured events you can expect from a policy:

Luggage

Bare Essentials

Domestic or One Trip (International)

Passport

The insurance is underwritten by Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company Limited and comes with a cooling-off period and excess.

The cooling-off period is 14 days which means if you decide the policy is not suitable after all, you can cancel and receive a full refund, provided you haven't made a claim and your trip hasn't started. The standard excess is $100 and is the amount you're required to pay when you make a claim. You can pay an additional premium to waive the excess or reduce your premium by doubling the excess.

Check icon

These are some of the features that InsureandGo can cover during your trip and leading up to it. Some of these features (like pet care cover), are often only available as part of the most comprehensive policy on offer, Gold.

  • Cancelling your trip before departure
  • Cutting your trip short
  • Delayed baggage
  • Legal expenses
  • Loss of income
  • Passport and travel documents
  • Personal belongings and baggage
  • Personal liability
  • Overseas medical expenses
  • Rental car excess waiver
  • Travel delay expenses

plus icon

Depending on which type of policy you are purchasing, you can choose from the following options for an added premium, in addition to the benefits covered above:

  • Additional specified items cover lets you raise the maximum amount paid out for certain nominated personal belongings if they were to be lost, damaged or stolen.
  • Business cover for when your trip involves business operations , you can get reimbursed for business equipment hire and replacement, emergency courier expenses, business money and staff replacement.
  • Golf cover will insure your own golf equipment as well as the costs of golf equipment fees and hire such as green fess or golf tuition.
  • Natural disaster cover for when you have to cancel your trip before departure or have travel delay or emergency expenses because of natural disasters .
  • Winter sports cover for costs related to 14 types of winter sports activities and even things like avalanche cover, lift passes and ski gear.

cross icon

When considering insurance policies, it's very important to review the circumstances under which you will not have your claim paid. These are usually referred to as general exclusions in your policy wording. InsureandGo won't cover you when your claim arises if:

  • You decide to continue with travel plans despite warnings from appropriate local or national authorities (like smartraveller.gov.au).
  • You or a travelling companion altered or cancelled your travel plans simply because you changed your mind.
  • It relates to a pre-existing medical condition you have not had approved by InsureandGo.
  • You were acting irresponsibly or dangerously or engaging in illegal or reckless activities.
  • Any claim resulting from your pregnancy or childbirth after the 30th week of pregnancy.
  • It is related to the consequences of a risky or dangerous sport or activity.
  • You or anyone you're travelling with is under the influence of non-prescribed drugs or alcohol .

This list is not exhaustive, so make sure you review InsureandGo's Product Disclosure Statement for a detailed breakdown of what is and isn't covered.

  • Head to https://quote.insureandgo.com.au/policylogin.aspx
  • Enter your policy number, last name and date of birth
  • Complete your claim details by answering all sections
  • Upload any supporting documents relevant to your claim
  • Submit, and InsureandGo will contact you within 10 business days

InsureandGo's range of policies should suit most types of travellers. You'll find cover for business travel, non-residents and senior travellers up to 100 years of age. Even its most affordable policy, Bare Essentials, has unlimited cover for overseas medical expenses and a small amount of cover for personal belongings and additional emergency expenses.

No insurer is perfect, however, and one area that InsureandGo does fall behind on is how it covers pre-existing medical conditions. There aren't any conditions covered as standard, which means you'll have to complete a medical questionnaire to determine if you'll be covered and how much you'll need to pay on top of a standard policy.

If you're still not sure about InsureandGo, you can compare other travel insurance companies here .

Does InsureandGo offer cover for cruises?

Yes, InsureandGo has a cruise travel insurance policy with three levels of cover: Bare Essentials, Silver and Gold. You can be covered for things like missed cruise departure and port cover, cruise delays, cabin confinement and reimbursements for shore excursions that are interrupted or cancelled by the cruise liner.

Who owns InsureandGo?

The insurer of InsureandGo's insurance is Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company Limited. The insurance is distributed and administered on its behalf by InsureandGo, an authorised representative.

Will InsureandGo cover my trip to the UK?

Yes, InsureandGo covers travel to the UK as part of its One Trip policy.

How do I get a refund from InsureandGo?

If you cancel within InsureandGo's 14-day cooling off period and are yet to leave for your trip or make a claim, you can cancel your policy and receive a full refund. If you cancel after the cooling-off period, InsureandGo will refund you a proportion of the premium for the outstanding period of cover less any government charges and taxes that it cannot recover. This is also provided that you have not made a claim or exercised any other rights under the policy.

Hi We are planning on travelling to Bali on 22/12/17. Are you covering any claims associated with the Mt Agung Volcano at the moment? If so, what sort of cover do you offer?

Avatar

Thanks for your inquiry.

According to our review on how Mt Agung impacts your Bali travel insurance and what you can claim for, InsureandGo they can only provide cover for policies that will be issued between 7:30pm (AEST) on 6th June 2018, and 8:00pm (AEST) on 8th June 2018. You may refer to the table from the first link above to know what date and time insurers stopped providing cover for Mount Agung as well as other volcano-related issues including the Bali ash cloud.

While you may not be covered for events related to Mt Agung, travel insurance can still cover you for unexpected medical expenses, prepaid expenses and lost luggage.

Best regards, Rench

Do you cover cancellations or disruptions to travel due to acts of Terrorism?

Hello Elizabeth,

Thank you for sending your inquiry.

Based on the Product Disclosure Statement of InsureandGo General Exclusions, under Section A, you are not covered for, page 20 of 54, #6

Any terrorist act or any loss incurred as a result of any intentional use of military force or other intervention by a government or official authority to intercept, prevent, or mitigate any known or suspected terrorist act.

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Jonathan

I’m a USA citizen and planning to make two overseas (Europe and South America) trips this year (total travel less that 40 days). Would any of your policies cover this situation? John

Avatar

Thank you for your question.

You have contacted finder.com.au, an Australian comparison, an information service and not actually InsureandGo Travel Insurance.

In order to get cover from an Australian travel insurer, most insurers will require that your trip is from or to Australia.

If you are travelling from Australia you may find our travel insurance for non-residents article helpful.

All the best, Zubair

I’M THINKING OF GOING TO BOTH ANAA AND KIRIBATI FLY FISHING AT DIFFERENT TIMES THIS YEAR. AS BOTH DESTINATIONS ONLY HAVE WEEKLY PLANE SERVICES, WOULD I BE COVERED FOR MEDICAL EVACUATION IF NEEDED AND WOULD I BE BETTER OFF IN GETTING A MULTI TRIP POLICY BEING 71 YEARS OF AGE,

You have contacted finder.com.au and not actually Insure and Go Travel Insurance, finder.com.au is a comparison and information service and doesn’t represent any insurance brand listed on our website.

Insure and Go Travel Insurance does provide cover for annual multi-trip policies for up to a age of 100 and will also cover you for evacuation and repatriation.

Please make sure though to read the eligibility criteria, features, and details of the policy, as well as the relevant PDS/T&C’s of the policy before making a decision and consider whether the product is right for you. If necessary, speak to the insurance brand to verify any details.

Cheers, Zubair

We will be travelling to Europe in July from the 17th till the 19th August, were then in Venice we pick up a cruise for 7 days returning to Venice, then flying on to Dubai for 2 days before returning home. What i want to know is do i have to take out a separate policy for the cruise.

Avatar

Hi Douglas,

Thanks for getting in touch.

Many policies cover cruise as standard. Please head over to our cruise travel insurance page to find out more and to browse through the brands in our panel that offer this cover.

Cheers, Richard

Rating Report

Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company, Limited

Thu 28 Apr, 2022 - 3:56 AM ET

‘Favourable’ Company Profile: The parent of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company, Limited (MSI), MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings, Inc., is the market leader in Japan’s non-life insurance industry. MS&AD Group has a well-diversified business that includes domestic life insurance and an overseas business that has substantive franchises in many countries. The group’s non-life business was the biggest source of its adjusted profit in the financial year ended March 2021 (FYE21). ‘Strong’ but Volatile Capital: Fitch Ratings expects MSI and MS&AD Group to maintain strong capital buffers. However, the group’s capital adequacy is sensitive to stock-market performance due to a high exposure to domestic equities. MS&AD Group’s economic solvency ratio (ESR) improved to 254% by end-December 2021, from 235% at FYE21. Stable Underwriting: Fitch expects MSI and MS&AD Group to maintain strong non-life underwriting results in FYE22-FYE23, supported by improvement in pricing and reduction of pandemic-related losses. MSI’s Covid-19 pandemic losses were mostly from business interruption (BI) policies through its subsidiary, MS Amlin in FYE21. We expect pandemic-related losses to have dropped in FYE22 and the ultimate loss should remain within Fitch’s expectation.

Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

Travel Insurance Underwriters

The exciting part of booking your holiday is complete - woohoo!  The next step is to take out travel insurance to protect your trip should something happen.  With so many different policies in the market, how do you choose one that is right for you and which brands can you trust?   What you may not know is that although there are many brands, there are only a handful of insurers (known as underwriters) in Australia that issue and underwrite the policies you purchase. All these insurers subscribe to the General Insurance Code of Practice which sets out the standards that general insurers must meet when providing services to their customers, such as being open, fair and honest.

If you're struggling to find cover for a particular scenario, you may have success looking at policies from different underwriters rather than comparing several standard policies from the same underwriter. There is likely to be more variance between what's covered and what's not covered between different underwriters or niche brands. Some of Australia's major travel insurance underwriters to look out for include Allianz Australia Insurance Limited, Certain underwriters at Lloyd's, HDI Global Specialty and Zurich Australian Insurance Limited.

Let someone else handle the risk

When you take out a policy, you're paying the insurance company and the underwriters a fee to cover your risk. If something goes wrong, you could end up in a world of pain if your policy isn't backed by a reputable underwriter with an experienced claims team. Fortunately, all brands listed on our site are underwritten by reputable insurers. All brands listed offer 24/7 emergency assistance to help you in your time of need.

We've Put Together An Impressive List!

It's important to note that it is not exhaustive; there are plenty of other brands in the market. We don't want to trick you about our service either, so we've marked which travel insurance brands we provide quotes for and those that we don't. Check out which insurer is behind each policy to help you hunt for the best cover for your holiday.
