Instillation of the Haçienda at the Factory Records exhibition in the Manchester Science Museum.

From Factory Records to Oasis: a musical tour of Manchester

A new exhibition on the seminal Manchester label is the start of a musical homage taking in the roots of Joy Division, the Smiths et al

I wonder if the founders of Factory Records always knew their work would be exhibited in a museum one day, so decided to curate it all from the off?

From its inception, Factory used a cataloguing system that gave a FAC number not only to every record released, but to its artwork, films, related miscellany and even the odd living being, including the office cat, Feline Groovy (FAC 191).

Neatly enough, items FAC 1 to FAC 50 form the basis of a new exhibition, opening on Saturday at Manchester’s Science and Industry Museum, called Use Hearing Protection: the Early Years of Factory Records. It explores the history of the label’s formative period, from 1978 to ’82 – the years before New Order’s gamechanging Blue Monday (FAC 73) and the brouhaha of the Haçienda (FAC 51) and Madchester.

Factory was a work of a conceptual art as much as a record label for Joy Division and New Order (and later the Happy Mondays), so an exhibition is the perfect way to tell the story of how it rose from gloomy, post-industrial Manchester to showcase the most important band of the post-punk era. The music was sumptuously packaged by graphic designer Peter Saville: his beautifully clean and timeless record sleeves and posters are the highlight of the exhibition for me. They could have been produced in prewar Bauhaus Berlin – or just last week.

The 12-inch cover of Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart, designed by Peter Saville.

Immaculately preserved artefacts have been called in from the families of co-founders Tony Wilson and Rob Gretton. Another section focuses on the label’s female voices, including the blueprint for Linder Sterling’s Factory Egg-Timer (FAC 8), a menstrual abacus.

There’s Stephen Morris’s DIY synthesiser; the same model his Joy Division bandmate Bernard Sumner built from a kit under the desk where he worked as an animator when no one was looking. And the huge red Perspex G from the nameplate of Granada Studios, where Wilson worked. The star exhibit is Ian Curtis’s Vox Phantom VI teardrop guitar, which he played in the video for Joy Division’s Love Will Tear us Apart , and which recently sold at auction for £162,000 (it’s back here on loan).

The synthesiser built by Bernard Sumner from a DIY kit. The exhibition space is painted the same shade of pale blue as the Haçienda.

The interactive display the museum had planned had to be shelved because of Covid restrictions, but the exhibition ends with two fun installations: the Gig Room, where large screens show footage of early Factory bands playing on TV shows; and a mini Haçienda designed by Ben Kelly, designer of the exhibition space as well as the original club – a nod towards the next step in The Factory story. Visitors are welcome to dance in both spaces.

Sadly, seeing gigs and dancing in the city’s clubs is still off the agenda, but being a music anorak I jumped at the chance of exploring the locations related to the exhibition with Manchester Music Tours .

The tours were started by Inspiral Carpets drummer Craig Gill in 2005 in response to being constantly asked about the history of the local music scene by customers at his record stall. His widow Rose has run the company since Craig’s death in 2016 – leading bus tours for fans of the Smiths, Oasis, the Stone Roses and Joy Division/New Order – but they’ve been on hold since the first lockdown. However, with tours due to restart next month, I was lucky enough to get a taster. ( Three/four-hour tours £30pp, private tours can also be arranged).

We continued the Factory theme by visiting the label’s first offices in West Didsbury; the Epping Walk Bridge in Hulme, where Kevin Cummins took the iconic shot of Joy Division standing moodily in the snow; the Haçienda apartment block that stands on the site of the nightclub; and in the vast Southern Cemetery in Chorlton-Cum-Hardy, Tony Wilson’s grave. Although his headstone doesn’t have a catalogue number (that practice ended with his coffin, FAC 501), the Factory aesthetic is instantly recognisable in the beautiful minimalist design by his friends Saville and Kelly. The black marble is so polished it reflects the cemetery like a mirror and is engraved with the words “cultural catalyst” – an epigram the grandiose Wilson would have loved.

Tony Wilson’s gravestone, designed by Peter Saville.

Rose then drove me round the Didsbury streets where she hung out with Inspiral Carpets and the then-unknown Oasis in the early 1990s, pointing out the pub they’d all gather at on a Sunday after larging it all weekend.

Rose is as passionate about the people behind the stories she tells as she is the music. Our tour was running late but she suddenly did a U-turn as she couldn’t miss checking in on Mr Sifter, owner of the fabulous old secondhand record shop mentioned in Shakermaker by Oasis (“Mr Sifter sold me songs when I was just 16”). “I just need to check he’s been OK in lockdown … God, I hope the shop is still open!” It is, but it’s been a struggle.

The highlight of the tour was Salford Lads Club , featured in the famous photo on the 1986 Smiths album The Queen Is Dead . I didn’t know that the redbrick club was on the corner of the actual Coronation Street – or that that street even existed – but it’s probably why Morrissey, a Corrie connoisseur, chose it for the photoshoot.

The writer at Salford Lads Club and detail of the Smiths Room

The biggest surprise, though, is the fascinating history behind its green doors. The club opened in 1903 and its Edwardian interior has hardly changed – the walls are covered in old photos and sporting prizes, and the original wooden floors that have endured over a century of local boys (and girls since 1994) boxing, weightlifting and playing football and are still in place. As project manager Leslie Holmes showed us around the Tardis of a building, I could smell the history in its concert halls, billiards rooms and gyms – all sadly empty since the pandemic. The kids will be back in next week hopefully, and a visitors’ open day is scheduled for 25 July.

Given the global interest generated by the Smiths photograph, in 2004 Leslie had the brilliant idea of opening a Smiths Room, which has become a shrine, plastered with thousands of photos of fans from across the world posing like the band in front of the club. “Curating this project has taken over my life in a way,” said Leslie. “I can’t think of many countries other than North Korea that I haven’t received a photo from.”

Where to stay

The Edwardian Mnchester hotel now occupies the Free Trade Hall.

The shell of the Italian palazzo-style Free Trade Hall, once Manchester’s leading gig venue and the scene of (at least) two concerts that have become part of rock’n’roll folklore, is now part of the Edwardian Manchester hotel .

In June 1976 the Sex Pistols played the Lesser Free Trade Hall. There were only about 40 people in the audience, but legend has it that nearly all went on to form a hugely influential band or be involved in the music industry, including Morrissey, the Buzzcocks, Joy Division, Mark E Smith of the Fall, music writer Paul Morley and, of course, Tony Wilson.

A decade earlier, shortly after “deserting” his folk roots, Bob Dylan took to the Free Trade Hall stage with an electric guitar. It was all too much for one folkie in the audience, who famously screamed out “Judas!” at his idol. In response, Dylan told his band to play the next song “fucking loud!”

The concert halls have long gone but this remains the hotel of choice for many visiting musicians. The rooms (doubles from £129 room-only) are gorgeous, and mine had views over Manchester’s hotchpotch city centre.

The building has another, more significant historical connection. It was built on St Peter’s Field, the site of the 1819 Peterloo Massacre, when 18 people were killed in a cavalry charge as they gathered to demand electoral reform. The event led directly to the formation of this newspaper almost exactly 200 years ago, but that’s another brilliant story .

Donald Glover announces surprise world tour along with new Childish Gambino album out of the blue

The dates include a massive gig here in Manchester - and the surprises don't stop there.

Danny Jones

Donald Glover, a.k.a. Childish Gambino, has just announced a brand-new world tour along with releasing his latest album, all in the space of just a few hours.

With virtually no warning whatsoever, the multi-talented musician, actor, writer, filmmaker producer and comedian decided to drop the completed version of 3.15.20 , the experimental record he quietly dropped four years ago, along with a brand new music video and a series of global tour dates.

Titling the ‘finished’ fourth studio LP, Atavista , and releasing a music video for ‘Little Foot Big Foot’ – which features what we’re sure will go down as an equally iconic dance routine akin to that seen in ‘This Is America’ – it seems like he’s been quietly plugging away at new music in the background.

Just hours later, Manchester’s AO Arena confirmed that they would be hosting Childish Gambino’s Manc gig this fall, with the tour itself kicking off in the US this August.

After dropping the surprise release of Atavista and music video for Little Foot Big Foot, Childish Gambino is making a return to the global stage with The New World Tour. Join us in Manchester on Tuesday 26th November. 🌍💫 Tickets go on sale on Friday 17th May at 10am. pic.twitter.com/2nMRdX7d3s — AO Arena (@AOArena) May 13, 2024

But the surprises don’t stop there either.

As detailed in a statement on social media , in which he informed his fans that “there’s a special vinyl coming soon [with] visuals for each song” from Atavista, he also revealed that an “all new Childish Gambino album comes out in the summer.”

There’s so much information to take in right now we can barely catch our breath.

Joining him as the main support act for the newly announced world tour is Amaarae, a Ghanaian-American singer-songwriter and fellow R’nB star. Here’s what she sounds like if you’ve never come across her before:

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Fountain Baby (@amaarae)
  • Emo icons Jimmy Eat World return with a mini UK tour and Manchester gig
  • Take That shine at the AO Arena in an over-the-top spectacle of a show that we’ll never forget
  • Keane’s Manchester gig has finally been rescheduled after Co-op Live postponement

With his gig at the AO Arena scheduled for Tuesday, 26 November, this isn’t just the first time he’s been in Manchester for a good long while but it’s also the first Childish Gambino tour since 2018/19.

Alongside his various TV and movie projects like Atlanta , the Amazon reboot of Mr. & Mrs. Smith franchise, as well as the upcoming standalone Star Wars film, Lando (just to name a few), it’s clear that Glover is still as busy as ever.

General admission for the Childish Gambino and ‘The New World Tour’ goes live at 10am on Friday, 17 May and if you think these things are going to stick around for long, think again.

The Script Manchester tickets Co-op Live

Irish rock pop band The Script have been confirmed as the latest artists set to play Co-op Live arena as they prepare to make their Manchester return later this year.

Announcing the Co-op Live gig as part of their upcoming Satellite world tour, in support of their new album which is set to drop in just a few months’ time, the noughties and 2010s hit-makers will be coming to Manchester’s newest venue this fall.

With the trio having not long l ost their lead guitarist and best mate Mark Sheehan during their run of Greatest Hits shows, this will be the first full tour they are set to play without him in the lineup.

Having gone back and regrouped, made a new record and now dropped their latest single ‘Both Ways’ at the same time on Friday morning, it’s full speed ahead for the boys with a massive world tour now on the horizon, including 20 European dates.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Co-op Live (@thecooplive)

After being reduced to just two of the original found members, frontman Danny O’Donoghue and drummer Glen Power, the Dubliners have since doubled , inviting bassist Ben Sargeant and guitarist Ben Weaver to join the band earlier this month. They’re also still out on tour with pop legend Pink.

Their new album, Satellite , will mark their seventh studio LP and the first material released as a four-piece and is scheduled for release on 16 August, promising to deliver a whole new energy from the band.

Taking inspiration from the likes of The Black Eyed Peas and Bruno Mars, bassist Glen admitted that the sound “maybe not what people might expect from us but we’re The Script, and now we have something to prove: that there’s life and light after the darkness. It’s why we’re coming fast and strong with that one.”

Lead singer Danny added: “The album cover is silhouettes of me, Glen and Ben Sargeant, our bassist, who’s been with us from the beginning. Then we have a hooded silhouette, because the air of Mark is still there.

“He always will be, but it’s also giving a tip of the hat to the future. It’ll never be the same Script. We’re just trying to get on and do what it is that we all feel is the next right thing to do and that’s to keep making more great music.”

  • Childish Gambino announces surprise world tour along with new album out of the blue

As for the show itself, The Script arrive at Co-op Live on 30 November – the final show of their UK leg and over two years since their last visit to Manchester at the AO Arena .

For those looking to grab tickets, fans who pre-order  Satellites  from the band’s official store before   5pm on Tuesday, 21 May will receive access to an exclusive pre-sale for tickets for the UK and Ireland   tour dates.

Pre-sale opens at   9:30am on Wednesday, 22 May and general admission tickets go live at the same time on Friday, 24 May. You can grab yours HERE .

We’ve had the luxury of popping along to the brand-new arena a few times now and we have to say, it didn’t disappoint.

Black Keys at Co-op Live, Manchester – huge venue’s first taste of the blues

Charlie Watkinson

As a huge Black Keys fan, when I found out they were set to be the first band to grace the stage at Co-op Live, I just knew I had to be there.

Of course, it didn’t turn out that way.

After numerous cancellations and rescheduling, Elbow managed to nab the first spot, with the Black Keys taking to the stage the following night instead (several weeks later than their original show date).

Let me tell you though – they did not disappoint.

Having been one of the starry-eyed fans at Elbow the previous night, and been properly impressed by the sound quality inside the massive new Manchester venue, the thought of hearing Dan Auerbach’s epic bluesy riffs had me beyond excited.

Entering the stage playing the heavy-hitting I Got Mine, followed by one of their most well-known tracks, Gold on the Ceiling, it was evident we were in for a great show.

I have to admit, though, as a die-hard Black Keys fan, I couldn’t ignore how static the crowd was throughout the whole performance.

It almost seemed like the room was filled with people who didn’t know their songs, perhaps due to rescheduling and Co-op Live dishing out tickets to say ‘sorry for the inconvenience’?

The quiet stillness of the crowd did a great disservice to the electrifying talent on stage. Luckily, this didn’t matter too much.

Closing with their most popular song, Lonely Boy, I almost forgot how still the crowd had been as I watched the entire stadium howling, “DAH DAH DAH DAH DAH – DAH DAH DAH DAH DAH.”

Although I wanted more from the crowd, all in all, the Black Keys played a setlist fit for a super fan and gave Co-Op Live its first taste of the blues.

I just wished the audience had been Howlin’ for You all night, not so Tighten Up’… As you were.

Irish rock band The Script have announced a UK and Ireland stadium tour will take place later this year. The rockers have also also confirmed a new album, 'Satellites', will be released in August.

The Script will head out on tour in November, playing 12 dates across the UK and Ireland, before heading to Europe for a run of eight shows. They'll play Manchester's Co-op Live on Saturday, 30 November.

After playing a select number of shows last year in the wake of the passing of the band's co-founder and guitarist Mark Sheehan aged 46, the band will now head out on a massive tour supporting Pink before returning to stages of their own this autumn. They'll play to over two million fans and be supported by singer Tom Walker.

After 10 billion streams, 12 million album sales, and six UK number 1s, The Script are ready to release their latest album Satellites in the coming months. Set for release on 16 August, the album vows to pay tribute to Mark by 'continuing the band they had built together'.

Speaking about their new music, Danny said: “The album cover is silhouettes of me, Glen and Ben Sargeant, our bassist, who's been with us from the beginning. Then we have a hooded silhouette, because the air of Mark is still there.

"He always will be, but it's also giving a tip of the hat to the future. It'll never be the same Script. We're just trying to get on and do what it is that we all feel is the next right thing to do and that’s to keep making more great music.”

To craft the new album Danny returned to the studio and experimented with 808s and playing with R&B-inspired sounds, focusing on upbeats sonics. Some of the new material have been co-written with Steve Robson (Rascal Flatts, Take That) and Wayne Hector (One Direction, Nicki Minaj) as well as bandmate Glen Power.

Co-op Live: Manchester’s new concert venue was hit by delays, but a false start need not mean it’s blighted forever

The opening of any new business can be a nerve-wracking affair. Will everything work? Will things go wrong? Will the whole enterprise fall flat on its face?

For the owners of a new concert venue in Manchester, things went very wrong. The £365 million Co-op Live arena was supposed to launch on April 23 with a performance by comedian Peter Kay. But after technical issues emerged, it had to be cancelled at the last minute .

Then the show was cancelled again. Kay, and thousands of ticket holders, were not amused. After that, appearances by The Black Keys, Take That, A Boogie wit da Hoodie and Keane were all either postponed or moved to another venue. Eventually, Co-op Live opened with a concert by local band Elbow on May 14.

The delays were both embarrassing and expensive. Costs from reputational damage and business interruption are likely to be significant. But how harmful will they be to the venue’s future prospects?

The answer probably lies in the basic economics of supply and demand. If, over the coming months and years, Co-op Live can supply enough acts that a large number of fans are happy to pay to watch, it will be sticking to a tried-and-tested business model.

And the arena will also benefit from the economies of scale. While increasing costs have led to an alarming number of independent venues closing , large venues can sell more tickets, rent their space out to high-profile events, and sell commercial and naming rights. Co-op Live reportedly has the largest maximum capacity ( 23,500 ) of any indoor arena in Europe.

It also has two wealthy and experienced owners – not to mention Harry Styles as an investor. One is Oak View Group , a venue development and management company, and the other is City Group , owners of Manchester City football club (and many others).

The arena project has also managed to secure a well-known brand: the Co-op . The sale of naming rights tends to bring in much-needed revenue to a project, particularly at the start – where it is useful for both sides.

The first naming rights partner to any project gets benefits as people get used to calling the venue by the brand name. Even if that brand pulls out of the arrangement at a later date, the benefits of name recognition remain. Other well-known brands associated with venues include Brighton & Hove Albion’s Amex Stadium and the O2 concert venue in London.

However, research shows that naming rights are only valuable if the sponsors get their timing right. Newcastle’s St James’ Park was not popularly referred to as the Sports Direct Arena when it was renamed for a short period.

Facing the music

Big building projects always come with risks, particularly in recent years in the UK.

The cost of living has increased – and with it, the price of goods, services and wages. This means many big projects, including the now (mostly) cancelled HS2 railway line, have suffered from soaring costs .

Aerial view of Co-op Live.

But the investors behind Co-op Live also have reason to feel optimistic. One particular venue comes to mind which demonstrates how teething problems can soon be replaced with profit and popularity.

When the Millennium Dome opened in south-east London on December 31 1999, it had been plagued with controversy . Almost a quarter of a century later, after redevelopment and the sale of its naming rights to telecoms group O2 in 2005 , the project is now synonymous with success, boasting record-breaking ticket sales and a number of industry awards.

Of course, the people running Co-op Live need to ensure there are no further blips in the immediate road ahead. Hosting successful events to large crowds will be essential to ensure that people focus on the positives of the venue, rather than the issues that plagued it at the start.

If this happens, everyone wins. People get to watch great live events, artists get to perform in a state-of-the-art venue, and investors can start to claw back some of their financial outlay. The owners will certainly hope their initial failures will swiftly be forgotten, and that the many shows planned for the future will go on and on.

Childish Gambino announces New World Tour: London dates and how to get tickets

A merican rapper Childish Gambino (real name Donald Glover ), 40, has revealed his big world tour dates, taking him to cities in the UK, Australia, Europe, and North America in 2024 and 2025.

American singer-songwriters Willow and Amaarae will accompany Gambino on several dates.

This is his first tour since 2019 and follows the release of his album Atavista, which he describes as "the finished version" of his 2020 record.

Before removing it from the internet, Glover published an incomplete studio album in March 2020 under the name Donald Glover Presents. A week later, it was back on streaming sites with the new name 3.15.20.

He published the album in that manner because it was incomplete and he wanted it to exist in case the world ended, according to a chat he shared on his Gilga Instagram page last month.

“The project I put out, ‘3.15.20’ that no one’s ever heard of, people didn’t even know I put it out, it was originally titled ‘Atavista,’ it was supposed to be ‘Atavista,” he said.

“But we put it out quickly, I didn’t master or mix it, I just kind of put it out. I was going through a lot, n—s thought everybody was going to die because it was the pandemic. We put it out, we finished it, it’s ‘Atavista,’ we’re putting that out. But then after that, there’s a  Childish Gambino  album, the final Childish Gambino album.”

Glover is an actor, writer, comedian, producer, and musician. He gained prominence as a writer for the NBC comedy series 30 Rock and for his role as Troy Barnes on the NBC sitcom Community.

Childish Gambino is known for his versatile musical style, blending hip-hop, R&B, funk, and soul elements. He has released several albums, including Camp, Because the Internet, Awaken, My Love!, and 3.15.20.

Legendary rock band deliver ‘spellbinding’ performance as Co-op Live arena finally opens

Default author image

Guy Garvey of Elbow

After countless setbacks, the UK’s biggest live music venue, Co-op Live in Manchester , has finally opened up to fans, and they weren’t left disappointed.

The inaugural show on Tuesday night hosted a concert from the band Elbow , following the recent release of their 10th studio album, Audio Vertigo.

The £365million venue was supposed to open in April with comedian Peter Kay, but the venue’s big night has been repeatedly pushed back due to ‘technical issues.’

The arena cancelled three shows at the last minute since then, including Olivia Rodrigo ’s Guts tour and rapper A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie’s concert, which was scrapped at the last minute when part of the ventilation system became detached.

It’s since been reported that the Manchester spot has completed an inspection and are ‘satisfied’ with the result, which found the ventilation issue was an ‘isolated’ fault.

On Tuesday, the £365million venue officially opened its doors to ‘apprehensive’ fans, before rock band Elbow, who hail from Manchester, took to the stage after support act The Waeve performed.

Guy Garvey of Elbow

Frontman Guy Garvey told the audience those who had been working on the building had been ‘so excited today, so nervous and so excited’, in a video shared on X.

‘There was already electricity in the air before you lot got in here and now it’s fully amped up. I hope you can feel it,’ he said.

Concert-goers branded the show ‘spellbinding’ while @foofoo50 said: ‘Seriously impressed with the arena. Glad the local lads of Elbow are the openers.’

‘A grand band for a grand opening,’ @GBSticks11 added.

A grand band for a grand opening. (I could make a joke about needing a hard hat but I won’t.) The magnificent @Elbow at the newly finished (probably) Coop arena. Very impressive – aside from the parking cost. But I’ll let them off cos they gave us free beer. pic.twitter.com/jcAd8Pg47m — GB Sticks (@GBSticks11) May 14, 2024
Seriously impressed with the arena. Glad the local lads of Elbow are the openers — Fee (@foofoo50) May 14, 2024

Issues at the arena began after a test event in April led to the rescheduling of comedian Kay’s stand-up dates.

Kay, 50, who was meant to be the ‘first artist in the world to perform at Manchester Co-op Live’, according to promotional posters, had his shows postponed twice as the venue was not ready to open.

The problems also led to the venue rescheduling a Black Keys gig.

The venue then planned for US rapper A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie to open the arena on May 1, but it was called off just over an hour before his performance and after doors had opened to fans – due to the ventilation system becoming detached.

Before Tuesday evening’s gig, Steve Jones, 58, from Rhyl in North Wales, told the PA news agency he was a ‘bit apprehensive’ about everything going to plan.

Co-op Live arena as Elbow performs

‘Hopefully everything goes OK,’ he said. ‘It’s been a long time in the coming, seeing all the other ones that have been cancelled, because we live 60-odd miles away and then you’re thinking “hope everything goes OK”.’

Nigel Thomas, 56 and from Chester, had come with family members, with one relative travelling from Hong Kong to see the band. He said recent cancellations at the arena had left him feeling ‘scared’ and ‘worried’.

‘We (were) worried if it would go to another venue, possibly just be postponed, and we wouldn’t all be able to meet and make it happen, so tonight feels a little bit weird, still a bit apprehensive that it hasn’t actually started yet, so we’ve still got a few hours to go.’

Neville Lawson, 58, from Durham, spoke to PA alongside Jo Elliott, 53, from Middlesbrough.

Lawson, who was wearing an Elbow T-shirt from a concert he attended 21 years ago, said: ‘We’ve had the tickets for a while, we didn’t think it was going to come off actually.

‘To think a Manchester band, which Elbow are, the first band to open the arena, it’s amazing isn’t it. To think of all these other (acts) – Peter Kay, Take That – and all of them, we’ve got a Manchester band opening up, it’s brilliant.

‘(We have been) worried it was going to cancel, (and) it’s not going to happen. Or are we going to get moved to the other arena in Manchester which is just a big aircraft hangar really.’

Security screening zone at the Co-op Live in Manchester for the Elbow concert.

Tim Leiweke, chief executive of the arena’s operator Oak View Group, said fittings in the arena had been ‘triple checked’ after the May incident, which could have been ‘catastrophic’ if it had happened just 15 minutes later.

He told BBC News he was confident it was ‘the safest building in the world’, adding there had been ‘no way’ operators could have known the ventilation was not installed correctly.

‘They didn’t put the bolts in. It wasn’t visible to the eye,’ he said. ‘And it fell out. So we [have since] got that double checked and triple checked. We’ve looked at thousands of bolts up in that ceiling now. We’ve looked at the life safety lines. And we were going to take our time to make sure we did this right.

‘There was no way we were opening the doors until we checked every screw and every bolt and every one of those 95 shafts.’

The ventilation issue meant scheduled performances by US pop star Olivia Rodrigo and British band Keane were postponed, while a series of shows by Take That were moved to the AO Arena in Manchester.

Last week, East Sussex rock band Keane announced their postponed gig has been rescheduled for October 19, while new dates are yet to be announced for Olivia.

Take That

The venue also added a headline performance from US rapper Travis Scott, who will be bringing his Circus Maximus Tour on July 13.

The Co-op Live arena is a joint venture between Oak View Group, co-founded by Leiweke and US music mogul Irving Azoff, and City Football Group, owned by billionaire United Arab Emirates royal and deputy prime minister Sheikh Mansour.

Harry Styles is among the other investors.

Following the cancellations, Co-op Live released a statement earlier this week reading: ‘Following the incident in the bowl on 1 May 2024, an inspection and verification report was undertaken by SES subcontractors.

‘In consultation with Manchester City Council, responsible authorities, and wider stakeholders, we are satisfied with the process and outcome of the investigation identifying the HVAC nozzle as an isolated manufacturing default.

‘This is a standard process of review in any venue when such an incident occurs. We now look forward to welcoming fans to Elbow’s opening performance on 14 May 2024.’

A Council statement added: ‘The Council has received documentation that confirms that the venue has carried out the necessary investigations following the incident with their air ducting that provides reassurance that they have considered their duties under Health and Safety law.’

News of the upcoming UK and European tour comes in the run-up to The Story So Far releasing their new LP ‘I Want To Disappear’.

Set to arrive on June 21 via Pure Noise, it’ll mark the fifth studio album from the band, and features previously-released singles ‘Big Blind’ and ‘Letterman’ alongside seven brand new tracks.

Most recently, Parker Cannon and Co. shared the latest single from the project, ‘All This Time’ – a track which brings together the same catchy guitar riffs and immense drum fills that the group have become famed for over the years.

You can pre-order the album here , and find the full tracklist below.

The ‘I Want To Disappear’ tracklist is:

1. ‘All This Time’ 2. ‘Watch You Go’ 3. ‘Letterman’ 4. ‘Jump The Gun’ 5. ‘Big Blind’ 6. ‘Nothing To Say’ 7. ‘Keep You Around’ 8. ‘You’re Still in My Way’ 9. ‘White Shores’ 10. ‘I Want To Disappear’

“We kind of grew out of our 20s between this record and last” said Torf of the inspiration behind the album. “Like a lot of people, you go through so many different things in life and you’re faced with new challenges. As a band, when you go through hardships you realise that some things are more important than music.

“These can and do take priority over playing, and that can feel divisive. It’s sometimes necessary though, to get to where you want to go.”

Geyer continued: “We were waiting for all the stars to align for our individual situations so that this record could be the priority, and that we had the time and space to make it happen in the way that we wanted to. We went through a lot as people, and as a band, to discover what was working about it, and we leaned into that.”

Before the aforementioned UK and European tour, The Story So Far will be joining A Day To Remember on their summer jaunt, along with Four Year Strong , Militarie Gun , Pain Of Truth, and Scowl . Visit here for remaining tickets to US shows.
