Alternative music or sometimes referred to as alt-rock or simply alternative emerged from the independent music underground in the 1970s and became very popular in the 1980s. Alternative music is in reference to the genre distinction from commercial rock music. In 1988, Billboard introduced alternative music into their charts. Early versions can be found dating back to the 1960s with the Velvet Underground.

Alternative music has helped define new styles of music including indie rock, grunge and noise pop. The music tends to vary from the mainstream as it relates to social context and its sound. The breakthrough of Nirvana in the 1990s brought alternative rock to the mainstream in music. Throughout history, alternative rock has been defined by its rejection of the commercialism of pop culture. However, ironically alt-rock has become so popular that concert ticket sales have exploded and in many cases surpassed many pop-rock artists. Grab Loving - band tickets now so you can experience alternative music live and in person.

Founding Member of Metal Band Abruptly Quits Mid-Tour—Second Member to Exit in Recent Months

Chris Piner

Updated:

For many bands, going on the road can bring a great deal of stress. The constant traveling, living off a bus, and playing in a new city with each show can cause tensions to hit a boiling point. For other bands, touring is a celebration of their hard work and determination. When it came to the band Vitriol, they kicked off their new tour early this year with all four members taking the stage together. But now, it appears Vitriol has only two members left as founding bassist Adam Roethlisberger decided to quit mid-tour.

Videos by American Songwriter

The last few months have been a whirlwind for the group as not only did Roethlisberger leave but so did guitarist Daniel Martinez. Leaving only singer Kyle Rasmussen and drummer Matt Kilner, the remaining members promised fans they would continue to play. Posting a video on Instagram, explaining the current situation, Rassmussen said, “After our Portland show on this tour, my long-term Vitriol partner Adam, co-vocalist and bass player, decided to call it a day on the band.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Vitriol (@vitriolwarfare)

Vitriol Not Ending Their Time On Stage As Lineup Changes

Not wanting to get into the details surrounding Vitriol, Rasmussen continued, “I’m sure many of you want to know why. There are many reasons. It was a very, very turbulent beginning to tour, financially, mentally, everything. When you’ve been working with someone for 12 years, things happen. We’ve had interpersonal pressure for a while now. It is what it is. There are a lot of reasons. He has our love and we’re very sad that he’s gone.”

Rasmussen also made sure to share what the future holds for the band. With fans worried about their upcoming shows, the singer insisted, “Matt and I are keeping this train a rolling. We’ll be finishing this tour as a two-piece. Come on and check it out. Best case scenario – you’re surprised. Worst case scenario – take videos and talk shit about us on the internet.”

Outside of the band going through some major growing pains while on the road, Rassmussen thanked fans for their continued support. “Thank you to everyone who has shared their support and enthusiasm over these last several shows. To the rest of you, we hope to see you out there.”

Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown Band at American Family Field: What to know for Milwaukee concert

Portrait of Piet Levy

Country superstar Kenny Chesney is ready to make his fifth tour stop ever at the Milwaukee Brewers ballpark Saturday.

Yes, that's opposite Summerfest — the first time the Brewers stadium has hosted a show during the music festival.

And joining Chesney at American Family Field are some faces that are very familiar to Summerfest fans: the Zac Brown Band, which has headlined the Big Gig's amphitheater seven times since 2012, more than any other act in that timeframe.

Megan Moroney — the female artist with the most Academy of Country Music Awards nominations this April (and a win for best new female artist of the year) — is also on the bill, along with Uncle Kracker, who collaborated with Chesney on the hit "When the Sun Goes Down." (Not coincidentally, the name of this run is the "Sun Goes Down Tour".)

And while Summerfest is also happening June 22 — along with Dave Matthews Band at Alpine Valley Music Theatre, and throwback hip-hop bash Tacos and Tequila Festival at Franklin Field — you can still expect about 40,000 members of No Shoes Nation to show up for Chesney at American Family Field.

Here's what you need to know before going to the show.

More: How Milwaukee Brewers' American Family Field became one of country's top concert stadiums

More: Kenny Chesney reveals what he texted Taylor Swift after her Person of the Year shout-out

When do the gates open for Kenny Chesney's Milwaukee show? When does it start?

Uncle Kracker will kick off the show at 5 p.m., but the parking lots will open at 2 p.m. — giving fans plenty of time for tailgating. The gates open at 4 p.m. Take advantage of those long lead times if you want to see every minute of the show. That the concert is happening on a Saturday should help alleviate traffic to the stadium, but Milwaukee will be buzzing that day with Summerfest also going on, which could affect traffic depending on where you come from. And you can expect lines getting through security into the stadium, too.

How much is parking? Is the Brewers' QR code-based parking system in effect?

General parking is $25 in advance, $35 the day of show, or $40 for preferred parking in advance, $50 the day of the show. You can buy parking at brewers.com/chesney , which is highly recommended, as the Brewers can't guarantee that lots won't fill up before you arrive. Also good to know: The QR code-based parking system the team was touting that was suspended after opening day due to connectivity issues is still not up and running.

Here's how to get to the concert if you don't want to drive

A pair of  Milwaukee County Transit System  routes drop people off within walking distance of the ballpark: the CONNECT1 on Wisconsin Avenue and Route 18 on National Avenue. Find the schedule, fare information and more at  ridemcts.com .

The taxi pickup and drop-off is outside Helfaer Field, while drop-off and pick-up for Uber and Lyft is in American Family Field's Gantner parking lot. But be forewarned: There are huge crowds for rideshares after stadium concerts.

Some of the  bars and restaurants that send shuttles to Brewers games  should be offering rides as well. See the "American Family Field" section of  brewers.com for more details.

Are tickets still available for Kenny Chesney's concert? How much are tickets?

Multiple sections are sold out, or mostly sold out, and the show is expected to reach capacity, but tickets remain for the concert at brewers.com . Prices for general tickets range from $60 for terrace reserved outfield seats to $280 for a seat on the floor near the stage. A handful of "platinum seats" with optimal viewing are also available for $252 to $254. And fans looking for an enhanced experience can see if tickets remain for any of the six VIP packages on the Brewers website.

What's Kenny Chesney expected to play in Milwaukee?

The hits, of course, as all Chesney fans know — including "Summertime," "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem" and "When the Sun Goes Down," which Chesney will be performing with Uncle Kracker. You also can expect a couple of songs from his latest and 20th studio album, "Born." And while Zac Brown Band won't play as long as it typically does at its own headlining shows, the band's sets on the Chesney tour have included their customary explosive covers and signature hits like "Toes," "Homegrown" and "Chicken Fried."

Where can I get more information about the Kenny Chesney concert?

More details, including where fans catching the show from the general-admission pit or a floor seat can get required wristbands for access, will be emailed to ticketholders. Additional information should be available at brewers.com/chesney .

Editor’s Note: The parking status at American Family Field has been corrected.

Popular on variety.

“It’s funny, in some interviews I want to say, ‘It’s just a name, we’re not all dog-related,'” Hughes says. “But it’s all so doggy now.”

Indeed, drummer Johnny Hutchinson sports a dog mask for the duration of Fat Dog’s shows (“We’ve never seen his real face,” Wallace jokes) and the title of the band’s debut album — out Friday via Domino Records — is “Woof,” the album art for which features a gigantic French bulldog. Perhaps they’ve made their doggy beds.

The name originated from an Instagram account Love used to run called @fatdogsandcats, where he would review overweight pets. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when Love started writing the songs featured on “Woof” in his bedroom, the cats were tossed to the side and Fat Dog became his moniker.

After gaining traction through word-of-mouth on the London scene, Love and co. headed to the studio to record the demos with the help of two of the most in-demand U.K. indie producers at the moment, James Ford (who in the last year alone has worked on new albums for Fontaines D.C., Pet Shop Boys and the Last Dinner Party) and Jimmy Robinson (who also worked with the Last Dinner Party as well as Arctic Monkeys). The recording process took nine months, which Love says was “too long.”

“It was a whole gestation period,” Wallace adds.

Now “Woof” has finally been born, a trippy, whiplash-inducing record that fittingly starts with Love yelling, “It’s fucking Fat Dog, baby!” Its nine songs combine Nine Inch Nails-esque crunchy synths, nonsensical lyrics and a whole bunch of wacky samples — chopped-up barking, a faltering heart monitor — to create a sound simultaneously familiar and never-before-heard.

Love says Fat Dog’s musical ethos came from “fucking around and stealing shit that people haven’t really heard of.”

“You do it because you really want to copy something, and then because you can’t copy it good enough, you make something kind of original in that way,” he adds.

Nine Inch Nails, of course, was an influence — “I was watching a Trent Reznor interview right before this,” Love says — as were the Russian EDM group Little Big and jazz great Kamasi Washington.

“If you’ve got loads of different music tastes, that’s quite a good way of creating a unique-sounding thing,” Hughes says.

At this point, we’ve seen maybe five dogs, though none have dared to approach us — until Hughes spots a friend from across the park. “Hey, you alright, Ed?” he asks. Ed is accompanied by a wiener dog — or sausage dog, as the Brits say — who immediately bolts in our direction, wagging its little tail and howling as the band showers it with pets.

“Legs, you’re barking at Fat Dog!” Ed yells.

“The dog’s called Legs!” Love remarks. “That’s such a good name.”

Somehow refocused by finally seeing a dog — before that, the band spent no less than 10 minutes bantering about famous people they’d like to start beef with (Jacob Collier and Justin Bieber, watch out) — the band gets serious about the impact of their music.

“I’d hope that you feel it in your gut, you know,” Hughes says. “It’s nice when you can get something that hits you not just in your brain, but in the gut and makes you feel compelled to move a little bit. And hopefully you don’t get bored.”

“That’s the main thing,” Love agrees. “I did try and make it so you don’t get bored. I cut a lot of bullshit out.”

In October, Fat Dog will embark on a tour through Europe and North America, where the band hopes to continue the momentum it’s built up at home.
