Tourist Spots in Liloan: Tagbak Marine Park and Molopolo Beach

Liloan is usually just an exit point from the Visayas to Mindanao or an entry point for people who are traveling overland from Mindanao to Visayas and Luzon. Not known to many, it can also offer travelers a reason to stay for a while and experience its beauty. [Check out our list of top tourist spots in Southern Leyte ]

Tourist spots in Liloan: Molopolo Beach

I’ve been passing by this town several time already and decided to stop by for a while. There are not many things to do here so a night or two will be enough. I wanted to do a slow travel this time so I decided to stay for two nights. This allowed me to just sit down and watch the locals do their thing. It actually feels good when you don’t have to hurry yourself to catch the next bus or van to your next destination.

Tourist Spots in Liloan, Southern Leyte

Tagbak marine park.

Tagbak Marine Park is located in Sitio Tagbak, Tabugon, Liloan, Southern Leyte. It’s an emerging tourist destination in the province. I never heard about it before. I recently just saw a video about Southern Leyte on Facebook and it caught my attention. So, I went there hoping that I’ll be able to visit the place. I didn’t really search for information (my bad) about the place. I did not know that I should have booked in advance in order to go there. Yes, I only googled it as I am writing this article. Hahaha. Anyway, I settled in the viewing deck and it was nice.

Tourist Spots in Liloan: Tagbak Marine Park

If you also plan to go there, you can call them at 0997 372 1452 to arrange your visit. The fee is Php500 good for 10 pax. You may also visit their Facebook Page .

How to get to Tagbak Marine Park

From Tacloban or Ormoc, you can take a bus bound for Liloan. Buses going to Davao and other parts of Mindanao also pass by Liloan so you can take them. Tagbak Marine Park is situated before the Liloan Port and Liloan town proper. Actually it;s before Wawa Bridge. It’s a walking distance from Wawa Bridge and Liloan Port.

If you come from Davao and other parts of Mindanao, you can take a ferry to Liloan. From the port, you can either walk to the marine park or take a tricycle.

Molopolo Beach

If you love the beach, then this place is for you. It’s located about 5 kilometers away from Liloan Port. I was lucky I visited on a weekday so I was literally alone in the beach area. I would normally feel happy when I’m in a secluded beach but for some reasons, I felt the other way around. Anyway, I suggest you bring a book when you visit there on a weekday. You’ll definitely enjoy the calmness of the beach and the relaxing sounds of the waves hitting the shore. Don’t forget to bring a beach towel and lie down on the beach under the coconut trees!

Tourist spots in Liloan: Molopolo Beach

How to get to Molopolo Beach

From Liloan Port, walk towards the national highway and take a tricycle to Molopolo Beach. If you’s alone, be prepared to pay more. I paid Php50 to get there which I think is very reasonable for a 15-minute ride. On my way back to my accommodation, I only paid Php15.

Wawa Bridge

Wawa Bridge is not as grand as the famous San Juanico Bridge but it has its own charm. It’s a walking distance from the posrt so don’t miss your chance to visit it. From the port, you can already see the bridge so it is that near. Hahaha.

Wawa Brigde

Where to stay in Liloan?

My casa inn.

I stayed in My Casa Inn, just a walking distance from Liloan Port. It’s a simple accommodation that offers cheap but comfortable rooms to sleep. It’s pretty basic but I kinda like how friendly the people managing the place.

My Casa Inn

Their room rates range from Php500 to Php1,000. I got my airconditioned room with shared T&B for only Php600. It’s pretty comfortable and a good deal. Just bring your own towel as they do not provide one.

My Casa Inn

You can call then in advance to reserve a room at: 0977 801 3713

Bagacay Point Lighthouse: Savoring The Scenery Of Liloan’s Parola

Bagacay Point Lighthouse: Savoring The Scenery Of Liloan’s Parola

Bagacay Point Lighthouse was truly one of the most beautiful revelations to Team Bang’s Sunday adventure in Liloan, Cebu. With its fresh sea breeze and rustic feel, Bagacay Point Lighthouse gave us a refreshing culmination, following a sweltering hike in Lataban Hills . Praised for its romantic scenery, Liloan’s Parola was the best spot to unleash our inner shutterbugs as well. And yes, although we love energy-draining hikes and fun-filled adventures, we in general are also frustrated photographers.

Bagacay Point Lighthouse: Savoring The Scenery Of Liloan’s Parola

As I was strolling around the venue, I later on realized that there’s more to Bagacay Point Lighthouse than just a chill-out spot and a place for prenuptial shoots.  As a matter of fact, I found out that it can be a fun playground for travelers as well as locals who want to escape the monotony of their everyday life. And for me, there was no other way to end this perfect day in the “Light of the North” than a visit to this charming landmark.

Our Bagacay Point Lighthouse experience

As soon as we set foot on Bagacay Point Lighthouse, we were all mesmerized by the towering beauty of the parola and its romantic atmosphere. Even though we had plenty of time, we didn’t waste any minute admiring the sight. We posed in front of the camera, and snapped a bunch of photos of the parola from the different angles.

Bagacay Point Lighthouse: Savoring The Scenery Of Liloan’s Parola

In some ways, our visit to Bagacay Point Lighthouse was kind of nostalgic, with sights that gave us a sneak peek into the past. Whether it’s the impressive architectural design of the lighthouse or its old-world feel, there’s also an air of mystery to the Bagacay Point Lighthouse. There were even some of Team Bang members like Beth who felt like it was déjà vu.

But, make no mistake about it – this mystical feel isn’t eerie, by any means. Personally, I think it’s this ambiance that makes Bagacay Point Lighthouse a favorite engagement and prenuptial photo shoot destination in Cebu.

As you might have guessed, we roamed around the area, hoping to find a few amazing spots for our photos.

Ultimately, we arrived at a restaurant nearby that offers clear views of Lapu-Lapu Island and its posh resorts. From there, we soaked up the sights, relaxed and took a couple of photos.

Bagacay Point Lighthouse: Savoring The Scenery Of Liloan’s Parola

Moments later, we saw a black, stone tower from afar, which is pretty near the shoreline.  We are all curious cats, so we all agreed to check it out.

As instructed by a local in the area, we followed the trail leading to the “torre” of Bagacay Point Lighthouse. Along the way, we bumped into a herd of goats and some cows.

Bagacay Point Lighthouse: Savoring The Scenery Of Liloan’s Parola

I love animals, and I usually get an up close look of them, whenever I travel. This time, though, I didn’t bother getting close to them or taking their picture. Last time I got close to a farm animal while hiking, I was chased furiously by it.

Bagacay Point Lighthouse: Savoring The Scenery Of Liloan’s Parola

Minutes later, we arrived at the old tower of Bagacay Point Lighthouse. Afterwards, everyone in Team Bang took turns posing in front of their camera. Did I say we love photographs?

Bagacay Point Lighthouse: Savoring The Scenery Of Liloan’s Parola

Sadam was a quite a daredevil in this Team Bang adventure, climbing the top of the torre.

Bagacay Point Lighthouse: Savoring The Scenery Of Liloan’s Parola

As you can see, he posed like the infamous naked statue of UP.

(After posting these photos on social media, a friend of mine from Liloan told us that climbing the torre is prohibited. We’re sorry if we violated any rules, but we didn’t see sign stating that it’s not allowed. )

The rest of the team, eventually, followed, and enjoyed the panoramas from the tower.

Bagacay Point Lighthouse: Savoring The Scenery Of Liloan’s Parola

After climbing the tower of Bagacay Point Lighthouse, I surveyed around the area, and found some sweet sights.

Bagacay Point Lighthouse: Savoring The Scenery Of Liloan’s Parola

Likewise, I found out that swimming is also possible in Bagacay Point Lighthouse. There were kids as well as adults, enjoying the clean and shallow waters in Liloan. Too bad, I forgot to bring extra underwear during this trip.

Even though it has some sharp rocks and steep cliffs, I’m pretty sure it’s a great place to take a dip for free in Liloan.

With the sun about to set, we headed back to the parola, so we can catch a ride back to San Fernando el Rey Parish Church (Liloan church).

Bagacay Point Lighthouse: Savoring The Scenery Of Liloan’s Parola

Before leaving the area, though, we made our trademark group pose at the entrance.

Bagacay Point Lighthouse: Savoring The Scenery Of Liloan’s Parola

Just like our hike to the Chocolate Hills of Lilloan, we unveiled our new group pose as well.

Bagacay Point Lighthouse: Savoring The Scenery Of Liloan’s Parola

We left the area, and arrived at Liloan proper where we capped off our day with a tasty and hearty barbecue dinner. I got to say it was another well-spent Sunday with Team Bang.

How to get to Bagacay Point Lighthouse:

From Sungold near SM City Cebu, take a jeepney ride to San Fernando el Rey Parish Church (fare is PHP 18). Then, make your way to back of the church, and ask the locals for directions. Tell them that you’re going to Catarman or Parola. Follow the way, as instructed by the locals. Then, cross the pedestrian bridge (temporary as of this writing).

Take a tricycle ride that will take you to Bagacay Point Lighthouse (fare is PHP 8 to 10).

Liloan, Cebu: Hiking the Cotcot River in Barangay Mulao

liloan cebu tourist spot

What comes to mind when you hear of the Cebu town of Liloan? To most people, it’s rosquillos cookies and the historic Bagacay Point Lighthouse. But this town has so much more to offer if you venture farther inland. The Cotcot River , for example, which separates Liloan from the municipality of Compostela to the north, is a river trekking destination. It is one of the major rivers on Cebu island, running for around 40 km from the highlands of Cebu City to the eastern coast, where it empties out into the Camotes Sea. Eager to discover the place, my sister and I organized a weekend trip together with her dog owner friends to go hiking along with their canine companions.

Our group comprised of nine persons and four dogs in total, riding a convoy of three vehicles. We first met up at Jollibee Liloan along the highway for breakfast takeout, then proceeded by turning left to Fatima Road towards the mountains. Before going to Barangay Mulao, where the river hiking begins, we stopped by a dragon fruit plantation along the way at Purok Dragon Fruit, Barangay Cabadiangan.

Mhy J’s Refreshments & Dragon Fruit Farm (entrance fee: ₱20 per person; parking fee: ₱20 per vehicle) has an elevated dining area overlooking 800 square meters of cultivated cacti that bear the distinctive, magenta-colored dragon fruits. Aside from serving rice meals, they also have their signature dragon fruit shake (₱80), which we all absolutely enjoyed. It was the ideal power drink to energize us before the hike. Unfortunately, the cacti were not bearing fruits during our visit since their fruiting season runs from May to October. Our stopover was the great place for the dogs to get acquainted with another, and to warm up for the rest of the day’s activities.

liloan cebu tourist spot

The 11-kilometer road to Barangay Mulao from the highway was scenic as it follows a river valley. Aside from an uphill stretch paved with concrete ramps, most of the route, albeit narrow, was fully cemented and accessible by automatic four-wheeled vehicles. Upon reaching the center of Barangay Mulao, we drove down to the covered basketball court, which provided a lot of room to safely park our vehicles. A barangay tanod had us register our names in their logbook and pay the entrance fee of only ₱10 per person for the river trekking. He also recruited a local guide to accompany our group.

The trail begins behind the covered basketball court, passing through backyards where villagers raise fighting cocks, chickens and pigs. Mango trees dotted the way, which was easy to negotiate since it was downhill all the way to the river. We reached Cotcot River in less than half an hour. Take note that other blogs have been calling this waterway the “Mulao River” after the two barangays where visitors typically start their hike – either in Barangay Mulao in Liloan or Barangay Mulao in Compostela – but the proper name is Cotcot River. One can start the hike from either barangay, but the trail from the Liloan side is shorter since it’s closer to the popular rock formations.

liloan cebu tourist spot

As soon as we reached the riverbank, we could see Malingin Rock , our first stop, only 150 meters upriver. This entire section of Cotcot River was beautifully strewn with large, mostly pale-colored boulders, contrasting with the green valley that flanked the narrow waterway. The water level was low so our footwear remained dry, as we climbed over boulders and hopped over rocks. Malingin Rock is one of the larger dark-colored boulders, measuring around 4 meters in height in my estimation. It gets its name from its roundish shape ( Lingin means “round” in Cebuano), precariously sitting next to the riverbank.

We continued further upriver – for another 180 meters – to second interesting formation. Sakayán Rock is a much larger boulder sitting on the middle of the stream. Locals named it after its rough resemblance to a boat ( sakayán in Cebuano), when viewed from the side. We picnicked at the rocky riverbank overlooking the boulder. A few of the group dipped their feet at a small cascade to cool off. The trail itself, even the bouldering part, was very manageable, however, the intensifying heat as the sun approached midday challenged us, especially on our return hike where we had to climb back up to the trailhead.

Our leisurely hike along the Cotcot River was an enjoyable experience and worth the drive up the mountains of Liloan. It was easier than the day hikes we’ve experienced in Naga City (Mt. Naupa) and Carmen (Mt. Mago). It offers a refreshing change of scenery that’s different from the undulating grassy hills and karst peaks that characterize most hiking destinations in Cebu province. Who would have known Liloan had its fair share of nature escapes?

liloan cebu tourist spot

How to Get There

From the North Bus Terminal (SM City Cebu), take any northbound bus and alight at the Fatima Road junction in Liloan. There also buses that ply between Liloan and Cebu IT Park’s PUV terminal. From the junction, hire a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) to take you to Barangay Mulao (Liloan). (Tip: one may also alight earlier across Gaisano Grand Mall, where one can find more habal-habal. )

For private vehicles, use Google Maps to navigate to “Barangay Mulao Hall”. There’s no mobile signal in the area, so make sure you download an offline map on Google Maps beforehand.

Register, pay the entrance fee (₱10 per person), and ask for a local guide at the barangay hall. Unfortunately, there are no fixed rates for guiding. Negotiate the fee with your guide beforehand to avoid misunderstandings. A fee of ₱100 per hour would be fair compensation. For our three-hour return hike, we paid our guide ₱450 for guiding our group of nine (ie. ₱50 contribution per person).

A return hike to Malingin and Sakayan Rocks from Barangay Hall of Mulao (Liloan) would take at least an hour (with no rests). If you want a longer, more challenging route, you can enter Cotcot River from Barangay Mulao, Liloan, and continue farther upriver past the rock formations for roughly another kilometer, exiting at Barangay Mulao, Compostela on the right side of the river. This route also can also be done on reverse (ie. Compostela to Liloan).

For more information, please contact the Facebook page of Barangay Mulao, Liloan , or text +63 9294861001. It may take days to receive a response since there is no mobile signal in the village.

Caution: Cotcot River is prone to flash floods. Avoid going to the river during strong rains. Heed the advice of barangay officials, if they disallow visitors due to unfavorable weather conditions.

Bagacay Point Lighthouse

Bagacay Point Lighthouse is located at Brgy. Catarman, Liloan, 6002 Cebu City, Philippines.

It was built by the Spaniards in 1857 and reconstructed by the Americans by the mandate of President William Howard Taft in 1904. It is 72 feet (22 meters) high and uses solar energy. As of 2018, the lighthouse is already 114 years old!

It was considered a Historical Landmark by the National Historical Commission in 2004.

This lighthouse used to serve as a guide for sailors. At present, it is a good place for photoshoots, unwinding or for having a family picnic.

There is NO ENTRANCE FEE and PARKING FEES. So, it’s an affordable alternative for those who just want to escape the city or indulge in the beauty of nature.

There’s a Bar & Restaurant called “Sugba-sugba sa Parola” few meters away from the lighthouse.

Titay’s Liloan

liloan cebu tourist spot

The original Titay’s is located in Poblacion, Liloan, 6002 Cebu City, Philippines. It was founded by Margarita “Titay” Frasco in 1907. She created a delicious biscuit in a rosca shape (ringlets – sometimes interpreted as floral shape). The name “Rosquillos” was named by President Sergio Osmeñia who was a provincial governor at that time. Rosquillos is Liloan’s most famous delicacy they serve until now.

Today, the fourth generation of Frasco is managing the Titay’s Liloan Rosquillos and Delicacies Inc. and is planning to export to other countries. They also turned their flagship store into a café. They can now accommodate 45 customers.

They also serve Otap, Galletas de la Carmen, Caicay, Penato, Banana Chips, Galletas de Bato, Hojaldres, Polvoron, Barquillos, Binangkal, Bread and Pastries. You can also buy some in department stores.

Little Santorini Mountain Resort: Liloan’s Hidden Hotspot

Main swimming pool at the Little Santorini Mountain Resort

Little Santorini is a hidden resort in the mountainous areas of Liloan, perfect for any occasion.

The luscious green mountains of Cebu are ideal spots for trekking , camping, and exploring. The cold breeze and the magnificent view make it a perfect weekend vacation spot.

This kind of atmosphere has inspired all sorts of establishments to set up resorts situated within the island’s many mountain ranges. The Cebu Transcentral Highway has many visitors because of the abundance of these relaxing spots, but the northern municipality of Liloan also has one that is frequented by many.

The Little Santorini Mountain Resort is located 20 kilometers away from Cebu City. It is inspired by the island of Santorini in the Aegean Sea, a Greek tourist spot where one of the biggest volcanic eruptions in history took place, which left a crater of ash several meters deep.

This mountain resort is inspired by the beauty and overlooking view of Santorini, Greece.

The recreational hotspot borrowed the iconic white architecture of the famous Greek island, with its facade, walls, and amenities covered in whitewashed stone.

The resort’s main attraction is their two swimming pools. The main pool is big and spacious, perfect for a casual swim. You can lounge in the poolside while enjoying the view of the sunset behind the lush green mountains.

LITTLE SANTORINI AMENITIES

Not many resorts in northern Cebu offer breathtaking views such as this one.

The kiddie pool is right above the main one, with a small slide set in the middle.

Even the kids can enjoy the amenities of this awe-inspiring Liloan resort.

Just like other mountain resorts in Cebu, you can book an overnight stay here. The beautiful architecture paired with a mountainous backdrop makes it a photogenic location.

Be aware that the resort is usually packed on weekends and holidays, so if you want a more peaceful experience, it’s best to visit the place during the weekdays.

This mountain resort in Liloan can be packed with people, as it's a great place to bring your friends and family.

  • Adults and Children: ₱ 150
  • Adults: ₱ 250
  • Children: ₱ 150
  • Deluxe Room: ₱ 3,500 (good for 2 pax)
  • Barkada Room: ₱ 4,000 (good for 4 pax w/ breakfast)

Excess guests will only pay the entrance fee, but requests for extra mattresses will be ₱ 600 for adults and ₱ 400 for children. Rooms can only accommodate 6 people.

HOW TO GET THERE

Liloan is around an hour or two from Cebu City, and you will need to take a bus at the North Bus Terminal near SM City Cebu to get there. You will be dropped off at an intersection, with Rulls Bakeshop as your landmark, where you can take a motorcycle taxi , a very popular transportation option to get around mountainous areas in Cebu.

The motorcycle taxis cost ₱ 80 for one passenger, and ₱ 70 each for two.

Operating Hours

  • Day Use: 9AM – 5PM
  • Night Use: 3PM – 10PM

Habal habal fare at the Little Santorini Mountain Resort

You can bring your own vehicle to Little Santorini or take a habal-habal from the main road leading up to the resort.

It’s going to cost a lot more if you take a taxi from Cebu City all the way to this northern town.

While public transportation might be your next best option, you can also bring your own private vehicle. You can also use Google Maps or Waze for faster routes since there is more than one way to get to your destination.

Little Santorini is definitely a place to visit when passing by the mountainous parts of Liloan.

The town of Liloan is where you will find the famous Titay’s , also known as the Queen of Cebuano delicacies – they are particularly known for their Rosquillos. However, the town is more than just a place to get some snacks. You can also visit other hotspots like Papa Kits, the Dragonfruit Farm, and the Bagacay Lighthouse.

The Little Santorini Mountain Resort is definitely a great attraction with its combination of beautiful aesthetics and fun atmosphere. The road trip to the destination is already a rewarding experience in itself, and it’s a great stopover for those residing in the northern part of Cebu or for anyone who’s looking to have an out of town mini vacation.

You can bring your friends and family and bask in the beauty of the island’s skyline. This is also a great addition to the many things you can do in the uphill areas of Cebu. Whether you’re interested in a quick swim or a quiet afternoon in the mountains, this family-friendly resort will be all you need and more.
