As someone who frequently travels, I've slung duffels, totes , and travel purses on my arm, but nothing compares to using the best travel backpacks. Depending on the length of your trip, a suitcase can either be too bulky or not big enough, so you'll need the vital second bag to make sure all your clothes, tech, and gear securely arrive at your destination. Plus, traveling with a backpack can be more supportive for your back, freeing up your arms and hands to pull out directions on your phone or to hold an iced coffee. Backpacks can also be surprisingly roomy, so everything you need (or want) on your trip fits as comfortably as possible. The good news is there are a wide range of excellent options to suit any and all of your needs. Below, we found the most travel-friendly options and tapped Glamour editors and some of our frequent-flier friends to share the best travel backpacks.

What to look for in a travel backpack

When shopping for luggage items like a travel backpack, the comfort and capacity of the bag is key. You want it to feel easy on the body, which means wide straps or a hip belt to distribute weight, which comes in handy if you're running to catch a plane or carrying it through a crowded subway. Bonus points if the straps are they adjustable and padded. Consider the material: Is it lightweight, soft, and made of durable material like water-resistant fabric? As for size, think about the use of the backpack. There are weekender bags and carry-on size options you can use for long weekends or smartly packed weeklong vacations and styles for short day trips, hikes, or shopping excursions.

First, it’s worth noting how seamlessly this slid on and off my back, making it a breeze to sit on the subway or grab my wallet to buy coffee. At first glance, I was confused about the zipper on the bottom of the front pocket, but when I realized it was a coat sling, which, as someone who runs cold and always has an extra layer, is something I will use again and again. Another made-for-me feature is an extra large pocket for water bottles since it’s a personal pet peeve when they aren’t wide enough for standard sizes. Having only worn this around the city for daily life, I appreciate that the shape and look of the pack are city-ready and more polished. Best Travel Backpacks | Best Luggage | Best Carry-On Luggage | Best Underseat Luggage | Best Tote Bags | Best Weekender Bags | Best Duffel Bags | Best Fanny Packs | Best Packing Cubes | Best Travel Gear

This fan-favorite belt bag has a loyal following of both men and women (including several GH staffers!) thanks to its comfortable fit, lightweight materials and spacious interior — all for a reasonable price. The nylon fabric is water-resistant, while the strap is fully adjustable so you can get a close fit around your torso (or waist if you prefer to wear it as a fanny pack).

Just note that unlike some crossbody bags that sit at the hip, this one lies flat against your torso, so it's not quite as easy to access the contents. Though its smaller 1L version is more popular, we think this larger size is great for travel because it can hold more while you're on the go.

Dimensions: 8.3" x 2.2" x 5.7" | Colors: Over 15 options

Despite its low cost, this bag wowed our experts and consumer testers with its comfort, style and spaciousness. In fact, it can even hold a water bottle along with a phone, wallet, keys and other essentials — all with room to spare.

One tester told us, "I love how lightweight it is and how much I can fit inside it!" Beyond that, the curved shape helps it feel comfortable at your side, even when you're walking for miles. Though its materials aren't quite as luxe as pricier bags, it still looks sleek and neutral enough to wear with a variety of outfits.

Dimensions: 11" x 6.7" x 3.9" | Colors: 7 options

Though the style looks and feels substantial, it's s urprisingly lightweight thanks to its performance fabrics that also happen to be water-repellent. Each bag features a quilted design and is easily packable so it doesn't take up valuable space in your suitcase.

The bag is on the larger size for a crossbody with one big main compartment, plus a small zippered pocket in the front so you can quickly find your essentials. It's also worth noting that the adjustable strap is longer than some other crossbodies, meaning it can also be carried as a low-hanging shoulder bag.

For those who prefer leather bags over ones with synthetic performance fabrics, this fashion-forward pick is great for a more elevated luxury look, especially when you're dressed to impress on vacation.

While most stylish leather crossbodies have sky-high designer price tags, this one is on the more affordable end. Worn by celebrities like Serena Williams and Kristen Bell, it's not as lightweight as other travel crossbodies, but our testers say it's not too heavy, either. It has two zippered pockets, each with organizational compartments inside. It's also available in smaller sizes at lower costs.

Dimensions: 10.25" x 7.25" x 4" | Colors: 9 options

This one even has a waterproof zipper and is designed to keep your contents dry ; you can even carry your phone and money into a pool while wearing it! A clear front screen allows you to use a touch-screen phone without taking it out. Plus, the crossbody strap can adjust to be worn as as a belt bag.

Athleta Revive Modular Crossbody Bag

The main pouch is a foam-like material with a water-repellent finish and it lies flat against the body. The strap contains pouches designed to hold sunglasses and AirPods. As an added bonus, the strap is removable and can be attached onto other bags, while the pouch can be used as an organizer inside larger purses.

Plus, there's a small zippered compartment in the back in case you need your phone or other essentials kept safe. It's not super spacious, but it has card organizers inside a zippered pocket in case you just want to bring a credit card and ID without a full wallet.

Lululemon All Night Festival Bag 5L

All Night Festival Bag 5L

Like a modern-day messenger, this style has a wide opening so you can easily sift through everything you packed inside. Once it's zippered shut, the top folds over and secures with a magnet. (Just note that Lululemon warns the magnet can interfere with certain electronic devices and bank cards.)

One GH staffer said she uses it every day and noted that the flap "feels secure while commuting or traveling and allows for a quick retrieval for items inside." Like other Lululemon bags , it has a lightweight and water-resistant performance fabric.

Dimensions: 7.9" x 3.9" x 8.3" | Colors: 3 options

Dange Dover Landon Neoprene Carryall Bag (Extra Small)

Landon Neoprene Carryall Bag (Extra Small)

Available in five sizes, this style's largest options make perfect weekender bags while the smaller ones are more ideal as crossbody purses. This extra-small size still has a five-liter capacity, making it spacious enough to carry on-the-go essentials, even holding a small tablet or notebook.

We especially love this one's organizational features: inside the main zippered compartment are three pockets and a key leash, while the outside has a phone sleeve for easy access (though keep in mind: It's not zippered, so it's less secure). We also love its soft neoprene fabric and wide straps to support a heavier load.

Dimensions: 9" x 4.75" x 6.25" | Colors: 9 options

MZ Wallace Crossbody Belt Bag

Crossbody Belt Bag

When fashion is the first and foremost priority, consider a splurge-worthy style like this quilted belt bag. Despite its large size, it's still fairly lightweight thanks to its nylon material. It's also functional for travel with two zippered compartments and built-in pockets for organization.

We love its versatility thanks to its three detachable straps: Two wide ones for your waist or across the body and one chain strap to dress it up. Online reviewers call it "perfect for international travel," with one saying she found it especially useful on a trip to London and Paris.

Dimensions: 10" x 8.5" x 2" | Colors: 4 options

How we chose the best crossbody travel bags

linebreak

The experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab are passionate about finding the best products at the crossroads of fashion and function, constantly testing to find apparel and accessories that perform well, feel (and look) great and last for years to come.

To find the best crossbody bags for travel, we considered our staff's personal favorites from the dozens of styles that we've tested in our Lab and personally tried out in real life. We also asked other Good Housekeeping editors and analysts to weigh in with their recommendations, plus we performed market research using our product expertise to find new and popular styles from brands we know and love.

How to shop for travel-friendly crossbody bags

linebreak

The one thing all crossbody bags have in common is that they're worn across your body. Other than that, here's what to consider when choosing the best crossbody bag for your next getaway:

  • Size: Smaller dimensions typically mean the bag is more totable, but will hold less. Alternatively, larger bags may fit more inside but can be cumbersome to wear, depending on your type of travel. Besides the dimensions, also consider the capacity: 1-2 liters will be smaller, while 5 liters will be more spacious yet still comfortable to wear.
  • Compartments and pockets : Some crossbody bags have one main compartment, while others have several compartments to help you stay organized. Also check for pockets inside the compartments, including pouches to hold your phone, keys and cards for easy access.
  • Closures: Most crossbody bags for travel have zippers to keep everything safe and secure inside. However, some have magnet closures and others have no closures at all. Consider how secure you need your belongings to be and whether you'll be at risk for things falling out or being pickpocketed.
  • Materials: Many styles are made of synthetic performance fabrics (like nylon and polyester) because they're lightweight and water-resistant. If you prefer a more luxurious bag, opt for leather (or even faux leather). Also keep in mind that bags with metal hardware will be heavier to carry around.
  • Adjustability: To ensure your crossbody bag will fit comfortably around your torso, check for an adjustable strap so you can find the right fit. Some crossbody bags are also convertible, meaning you can change the straps or change how you wear them on your body.
  • Packability: If you'll be packing your crossbody bag in your suitcase, consider opting for a lighter and thinner style instead of one that's more structured. If you do prefer a structured bag for style, consider wearing while en route to your destination or filling it with smaller items (like socks and underwear) in the suitcase so you don't waste valuable packing space.
  • Safety features: Certain trips require you to pay closer attention to the risk of people that prey on tourists. In these cases, look for anti-theft features like secure zippers, straps that can attach onto your seat and RFID-blocking technology.
  • Appearance: Last, but certainly not least, it's okay to choose a travel bag based on how it looks without sacrificing other important features. Consider what you'll be doing and wearing throughout your trip. Some of our recommendations are especially good at transitioning from daytime exploring to nighttime dining while matching a wide range of outfits.

What should you consider when choosing a weekender bag?

Dimensions: From compact overnight bags that hold one set of clothes to those that can hold up to five-plus shoes, the size of your weekender will ultimately depend on how long you plan to travel and how many resources you need. Material: Whether you gravitate toward nylon that can withstand the elements or supple leather (real or faux!), there's a weekender for every style and budget.

Style: These weekender bags are a mix of duffels, totes , suitcases , and even convertible backpacks that are easy to carry and fit all your essentials for just a few days.

Plenty also have trolley sleeves, a.k.a. the open-bottom slot that allows you to slide the bag onto suitcase handles. Everyone Needs a Crossbody Bag for Their Next Trip

Consider this style the Goldilocks of purses—it's lightweight, secure, and can fit more than you'd expect.

Woman walking around the city with a cup of coffee with crossbody bag

While the right luggage sets and weekender bags can make your transit significantly easier, I'd argue that choosing the best travel purse is even more critical. While there are tons of travel bags you can bring with you, crossbody options, specifically, are often the best way to go. These are the bags that you rely on when going on day trips or smaller excursions, and we found the best ones that expertly mix both style and function.

Even though cross-bodies are an endlessly chic bag style , not just anyone will work as the perfect travel bag. If you pick a bag too small, you'll be left juggling your essentials while sightseeing. Pick one that's too large, and you'll wish you'd left it behind in the hotel. Finding one with the details you need—like the right number of pockets or one that comes in a versatile colorway—takes some work.

So, we did the hard part for you. To find the best options before you jet off on an end-of-summer getaway, Marie Claire spoke to travel experts Yolanda Edwards of travel and lifestyle site Yolo Journa l and Brooke Saward , the writer behind the World of Wanderlust blog, which focuses on solo travel, about their go-to trip accessory—the crossbody travel bag. The belt-bag style is a favorite amongst the well-traveled set thanks to its hands-free design, detachable straps, and versatility, allowing it to take you from sightseeing to Aperitivo hour to dinner. Edwards, for instance, says she always carries two with her on every trip and cites one from designer bag band Ferragamo as her top pick.

From designer styles to smaller leather totes with handy convertible crossbody straps, the 21 bags on this list are small enough to carry hassle-free but are designed to hold all the must-haves for your next destination. Ahead, Edwards and Saward offer insight into how to find the best travel bags, including details to look out for, their favorite brands, and more.

JW PEI Women's Mini Flap Crossbody

JW PEI bags are of great quality for their price point, and I should know, considering I own a few. Available in 13 different colorways—including this dark brown and fun shades like metallic silver and bright pink—there's a shade for everyone. Small Le Foulonné Leather Crossbody Bag

Slim bags like this one are a dream to pack—or to keep close to you on a crowded street. Longchamp is known for its lightweight nylon fabrics, but the brand's leather offerings are worth the investment, too. Chaise Pebbled Leather Crossbody Bag

It's not too big or small, so you can easily fit your travel essentials comfortably. Plus, the zip top closure and zipper pockets keep them secure.

It also comes with a removable wristlet strap so you can easily turn this bag into eveningwear.

Shein Minimalist Hobo Bag

Some people are the type to throw everything in a bag and go—and that's ok! If you would rather not mess around with multiple pockets, an oversized pouch option like this is the way to go. You can throw in everything you need for the day, and it can be a lot, thanks to this bag's roomy interior, zip the top, and head out the door. It has a nice thick strap, so no matter how much you're schlepping around, your shoulder won't ache.

What to Look For in a Crossbody Bag for Travel

  • A Secure Closure: How it closes separates a good travel purse from a great one. It's the most important feature of a travel purse for Edwards, who says, "It needs to have easy access, but a secure closure so nothing falls out and people can't reach into it." A crossbody bag would ideally have a zip-top closure, but a flap works, too. Stay far away from anything that doesn't close fully or only uses magnetic closures, or you'll risk easy access to pickpockets.
  • The Right Size: This may be up to personal preference, but size matters when it comes to the best travel purses. Howards says, "It can’t be too small—and must hold her wallet, passport, glasses, and lip balm—but it isn’t a carryall." With a tote bag, you'll be too tempted to throw in non-essentials, resulting in an aching shoulder at the end of the day. Instead, a crossbody bag is the "Goldilocks" of travel purses—they're small enough to carry your essentials but not too big to be burdensome.
  • The Color: Sure, a red bag may look especially trendy right now, but it's actually smarter to bring something less noticeable as your travel purse. "I would avoid choosing bright colors, because you don't want the location of your money, bank cards, or phone to stand out," Saward advises. Instead, the travel pro says she always goes with a sleek black bag—that way, her necessities are kept more under-the-radar, not to mention a black bag goes with every look seamlessly.

How to Style the Best Crossbody Bags for Travel

Crossbody Bags styled three ways.

A structured crossbody bag is ideal for keeping casual looks elevated. A contrasting bag breaks up a monochromatic outfit, or it can seamlessly blend in when worn with brighter hues.

Styling your bag isn't about making your bag the star—it's more about making sure that the bag works with every other item you pack in your travel capsule wardrobe . Versatility is everything when shopping for a travel bag. It needs to work with a travel day ensemble and a nice dinner. An easy, neutral-colored bag will work with your easiest leggings outfits or an endlessly-layered ensemble on a busy morning spent at the airport.

What’s the Best Personal-Item Bag for Flying?

Portrait of Katherine Gillespie

Between finding a carry-on that will fit in most overhead compartments, a toiletry bag or Dopp kit for your tiny bottles of shampoo, and an under-the-seat personal item to hold everything you’ll need for in-flight comfort and entertainment, solving the packing equation isn’t easy. To make things even more complicated, there aren’t even standard regulations for what counts as a “personal item” — as my fellow writer Rachael Griffiths explains here , each airline has its own particular requirements. If you’ve purchased a basic fare on a no-frills carrier like Frontier or Spirit, you’ll generally want to stick with a bag measuring 8 x 18 x 14 inches or smaller (and if you’ve purchased a personal-item-only fare, I’ve written a minimalist packing guide to help you figure out how to travel with just one small bag). On most other airlines, there’s a lot more you can get away with. Below, find advice from stylish frequent fliers (and Strategist staffers) about the totes, duffels, and backpacks they slip over the handles of their suitcases.

Update on September 12, 2024: Updated prices and checked stock for all products.

The best personal-item tote bags

Parker Thatch Medium Mimi - Suede Caramel

Yolo Journal ’s Yolanda Edwards likes travel bags that don’t look like travel bags and can therefore be used for everyday sightseeing and shopping upon reaching your destination. Parker Thatch’s roomy totes fit the bill, and while they don’t have a luggage sleeve, Edwards has no problem slipping the handles of this one over her Rimowa suitcase. “And it’s great for going to the farmers’ market once I arrive where I’m going,” she adds.

Longchamp Large Le Pliage Tote

“I look for a bag that can sit on top of my carry-on, fit a lot of items, and be easily stored when not in use,” says Daniela Velasco, the creative director of Drift magazine. That bag, for her, is Longchamp’s forever classic Le Pliage tote, which flattens and folds up for storage. Strategist senior editor Hilary Reid owns one in orange and is also “always surprised by how much fits inside.”

L.L. Bean Boat and Tote, Zip-Top

Is there a more quintessential carry-all than the L.L.Bean Boat and Tote? Writer and influencer Harry Hill doesn’t think so. “As someone who is usually drawn to more uppity travel bags, this trusty tote is a delight because of how unfussy it is,” Hill tells us. “It fits a ton, it’s super-lightweight, and I don’t have to worry about spilling coffee on the vachetta or putting it on the ground.” Hill suggests monogramming your name — or a crude joke, depending on personal preference. For additional customization, “the colorways are constantly changing, so keep an eye out if you have a specific vision for your tote.” While Hill adds that it’s impossible to go wrong, because any L.L.Bean “will make you look like a Kennedy skipping town,” the zip-up version of the bag will give more peace of mind at the airport.

Cuyana Easy Travel Tote

Strategist contributing writer Mya Gelber spent a day asking stylish strangers on the subway about their work bags, and Cuyana’s Classic Easy Zipper Tote was the one she ended up purchasing for herself. So when the brand announced this larger travel-friendly version of the popular bag, I immediately ordered one to test out. Made from soft and slouchy leather, it’s a big bag that can definitely fit an outfit or two alongside your laptop, passport, and other essentials. While it can’t be worn as a cross-body, the tote’s shoulder straps are long and thick enough to be comfortable for long periods of time. There’s no luggage sleeve, either, but this means that the bag can be used more seamlessly in everyday life — it would be an excellent investment for anyone who is commuting gym-to-office.

Pacific Tote Company

Sewn in California from leftover sailing canvas, Pacific Tote Company’s bags are similar to L.L. Bean boat totes, except more brightly colored. The company is co-owned by director Roman Coppola (brother to Sofia, who carries Pacific Tote bags on set ) and beloved by bi-coastal film industry insiders. If you work in film and fly between L.A. and New York every other week, you carry your laptop in this pleasingly sturdy bag . Strategist style columnist Chris Black is also a fan .

Kule The Over the Shoulder Tote

When she’s not traveling with her Parker Thatch bag, Edwards also likes to use Kule’s roomy totes as personal items. Saturday Night Live ’s Chloe Fineman travels with one of these too, and says it fits both a laptop and extra outfit inside. She adds that the New York brand’s designs are “a little cheeky and a little funny,” as well as a nice reminder of home when she’s on the road.

MZ Wallace Medium Metro Tote Deluxe

Here’s another professional-looking, multi-purpose travel tote, as recommended by Strategist writer Lauren Ro. She says it makes a great carry-on personal item because it’s lightweight and custom-designed for air travel, with a luggage sleeve and exterior pockets for stashing chargers and tidbits, as well as a removable crossbody strap.

Baggu Cloud Carry On

At least two friends that I know of ended up immediately purchasing a Baggu Cloud Carry-on after I flaunted mine at a destination wedding last year. Made from weightless but durable nylon, the airplane-friendly version of the brand’s original Cloud Bag can hold a lot of stuff, and the bright colorways stand out in a sea of boring navy duffels at the airport. Puffy shoulder straps make standing in line at security a bit more tolerable, and generous external pockets are handy for stashing a book or water bottle. The original bag’s dimensions are actually rather large (14 × 20 × 8 inches) for a personal item, although its bulkiness really depends on how much stuff you pack inside. I’ve taken mine on a personal-item-only Spirit flight with no issues at all, and on longer trips I have also slipped it over the handle of a Samsonite carry-on suitcase using the attached luggage sleeve. If you’re looking for something more compact that’ll definitely squish under the seat in front of you, Baggu recently launched a smaller size (16.5 by 12.5 by 6.5 inches) with the same comfortable padded straps and removable zipper pouch inside.

The best personal-item duffel bags

Patagonia Black Hole Mini MLC

Former Strategist associate editor Louis Cheslaw calls this Patagonia duffel his “ secret second suitcase ,” because its unassuming-yet-roomy interior lets him pack heavy without checking a bag. The Black Hole’s 30-liter capacity is about as large as a bag can be while still qualifying as the “personal item” you can bring onboard with your main carry-on suitcase and slide under the seat in front of you, Cheslaw notes. “Within that capacity, I can easily fit two pairs of shoes as well as a week’s worth of underwear, socks, and thin shirts, relieving a ton of pressure on my suitcase.”

Halfday The Garment Duffel

This new-school garment bag, which made our Travel 100 list of the best products to take on the road, can keep a suit or gown unwrinkled while also cleverly storing several other outfits. My fellow Strategist writer Rachael Griffiths loves taking hers on weekend trips with friends, especially when packing satin dresses and pleated shirts for nights out. It’s ideal for destination weddings, and Moonflower wine bar co-owner Rebecca Johnson even took one all the way to Tasmania for a romantic antipodean getaway with her husband. Going ’s travel spokesperson, Katy Nastro, told me that it’s very popular among her exceedingly well-traveled colleagues.

Dagne Dover Landon Neoprene Carryall - Medium

For both carry-on backpacks and duffels, former Paper fashion editor Mario Abad turns to Dagne Dover’s neoprene travel bags. “They’re the best,” he says. “They’re really lightweight, and they’re made of this scuba material that looks sleek and modern and is nice to the touch.” The bags aren’t just aesthetically pleasing, though. “You can fit a lot of stuff inside — it’s a minimal aesthetic, no busy details or anything, just all the compartments you need.” Jessica Morrobel of  Traveling With Jessica agrees that the Landon is an “absolute lifesaver,” and  Going ’s travel spokesperson, Katy Nastro, is also a fan, especially for quick overnights. The duffel comes in five sizes, but medium is the best option if you know you’ll be flying on budget carriers with strict rules.

The best personal-item backpacks

Lo & Sons Hanover Deluxe 2 Travel Backpack

This is my current personal item backpack of choice. It is designed to slip over the handles of a carry-on suitcase, but over Christmas I took it as my only luggage on a weeklong train trip across Turkey and Georgia and it fit everything I needed, including an extra pair of shoes. The neutral design is as appropriate for day hiking and office commuting as it is flying. But the capacity is the biggest drawcard. Creator Jessica Wright of Bon Traveler is a longtime user and says she is “shocked” by how much it can hold. Great for packers who like to compartmentalize, the interior is separated into various sleeves and sections for a laptop, clothing, and tech items. But you can also remove these compartments and just use it as a black hole bag if needed.

Timbuk2 Never Check Expandable Backpack

My fellow Strategist travel writer Rachael Griffiths prefers this sleek Timbuk2 backpack with even more sleeves and compartments for organizing items on the move. It, too, can store “a week away’s worth of clothes and a fat beach read if you’re strategic,” she says. Which is ideal if you’re traveling personal-item-only .

Gregory Rhune 25

The “clown car of personal items” is what writer and film wrangler Maggie Slepian calls this top-loading backpack from hiker-beloved brand Gregory. When she used it as her only luggage item for a four-day trip to the East Coast last fall, it fit a laptop, notebook, sandals, running shoes, rain jacket, jumpsuit, two pairs of leggings, two pairs of shorts, several shirts, toiletries, socks, undergarments, five pairs of headphones (over-ear, noise-canceling earbuds, white-noise only, corded for the plane, and AirPods for Zoom calls), and snacks. Her water bottle was stashed in the stretchy side pocket. I’ll also note that the brand has recently updated this bag with new (and to my eyes more attractive) colorways; the “techno granite” is very sleek.

Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Tote Pack

Patagonia’s Ultralight Black Hole Tote Pack is “a really good bag,” as Strategist contributing writer Molly Dektar observes . Popular among globe-trotting art world types, it can be carried as either a tote or a backpack, depending on the situation, and it folds into its own internal pocket, for easy storage. It is practical without sacrificing style: “Though it is crafted of black ripstop, it does not scream, ‘I hike!’ and though it has a large number of pockets and adjustable straps, it does not scream, ‘I code!’”

Patagonia Black Hole 25L Daypack

Strategist senior editor Simone Kitchens is a fan of Patagonia’s Black Hole bags too — but she uses this more traditional-looking one. “ There are one zillion separate little pockets and perfectly sized compartments for things like chargers and night guards and passports and AirPods,” she explains, “as well as slim sleeves for a laptop and magazines.” The bag opens at the top, which means things won’t come tumbling out when you need to grab something. And while there’s a high level of organization happening on the inside, the bag has a smooth exterior: “ I quite like that the outside doesn’t look all that tricked out. ”

Fjallraven Kanken Mini

Despite fears of looking like a Scandinavian school child or 2012-era hipster, Strategist writer Dominique Pariso is loyal to her Kanken — and she’s not alone among our staff . “This backpack is so light, so compact, and so durable it really is ideal for stuffing under tiny airplane seats,” she explains. “Plus, you can fit way more stuff inside than seems humanly possible given its petite size.”

The best personal-item cross-bodies and fanny packs

Baggu Medium Nylon Crescent Bag

Baggu’s take on the crescent trend is excellent for travel. I’ve had mine for a couple of years now and would be lost without it at the airport. It’s comfortable to wear, with a highly adjustable strap and two zippered internal pockets for securing your phone, passport, and wallet. The capacity is huge: I can fit a book and water bottle inside and still have room left over for other items. I’ve machine washed it several times with no issue. And while the bag looks smart, especially in the black colorway, it’s also low-key enough to avoid the attention of pickpockets. Hairstylist Teddi Cranford, who has visited Marrakech five times , says that it’s “essential for the souk,” because you can “just easily grab stuff out and zip it back up.”

Dagne Dover Ace Fanny Pack

Less sporty-looking than the ubiquitous Lululemon belt bag, and constructed from stretchy neoprene fabric that lets you stuff it full if you need to, our favorite fanny pack is perfect for the plane. I’ve got one of these in white and appreciate how minimal it looks. The size also makes it easy to hide under a jacket or sweater.

The crossroads of travel and fashion? Now that’s a happy place. Naturally, we jump at any chance to double dip on our favorite subjects, so a breakdown of the best crossbody bags for travel is an obvious and resounding “yes.”

There’s a fine line that divides the modern jet setter from the weary traveler, and it’s (mostly) marked by a precise combination of style and preparedness. And anyone who’s traveled knows that great bags are the most important companions.

The right crossbody allows you to carry your essentials hands-free while you’re hauling ass through airport security at 5 A.M. or putting in miles during a day of sightseeing. Of course, you might also need something to carry to dinner or on a spontaneous date with some accented stranger (a girl can dream!). The moral of the story is you need a bag that can do it all —and one that works for you in every way. So, whether you’re jetting off on an international adventure or gearing up for a summer vacation , shop the 13 best crossbody bags for travel, ahead.

Ahem, would it be cheesy to call this one a clear choice for anyone traveling for an event or concert. An open-topped bag isn’t normally ideal for traveling, but with bag restrictions at most stadiums and venues in America, a fashionable transparent bag is a must-have.

BAGGU Medium Nylon Crescent Bag

Medium Nylon Crescent Bag

This BAGGU option is actually a personal recommendation from associate fashion commerce editor Meg Donohue—although all the rave customer reviews amplify the point. This bag is spacious, not bulky, and surprisingly cute.

Dimensions: Height: 8 inches; width: 13.75 inches; depth: 4 inches

Material: Nylon

Colors: Black, Brown, Cocoa, Lemongrass, Pixel Gingham

Customer review: “This bag is so cute and easy to carry. I’m a mom on the go and my bags always get dirty. This bag is so comfortable and easy to clean. The strap is nice and wide and comfortable and the bag is big enough for me to even carry my Owala in it! If you’re on the fence, come on over. This bag rules!”

How to Shop for Travel-Friendly Crossbody Bags

elle line break

  • Look for bags that close securely. Zippered or lock closure tops are best. Snaps and magnets come in second, and open tops offer the least protection against theft.
  • Before purchasing, make sure a bag will hold all of your necessities. If you’re a seasoned traveler, you likely know which items you like to keep on your throughout your days. But if not, give it some thought. Will you want to keep your passport on your person, or are you comfortable using the hotel safe? Do you carry an inhaler or EpiPen? Is your wallet large, or do you have a sleek card holder? Think these things over and be sure your new bag will hold everything you want it to. Often, it’s better to go slightly larger than you might initially think you need. Size up.
  • Ideally, the bag will feel comfortable to wear and will have a thick, perhaps even padded, strap. It’s also preferable for straps to be adjustable.
  • The more organizational features, the better.
  • A bag that can be worn in multiple ways or has a versatile style is best if you want to pack light. Some bags won’t transition well to a fancy dinner or night out. If you only plan to bring one bag, keep this in mind.
  • If you’re more concerned with practicality, you’ll definitely want to look for durable, weather-resistant materials, so you don’t have to worry about getting caught in the rain.

Why Crossbody Bags Are Good for Travelers

linebreak

  • If worn as a true crossbody, it’s not as easy for the bag to slip off your shoulder—or to be snatched—as it is with a tote, shoulder, or handbag. Yet, it still provides that handsfree convenience. The same can be said for backpacks.
  • From a fashion perspective, crossbody bags are easier to dress up than backpacks and are likely to match with more of your outfits.

While other types of bags, like suitcases and backpacks , have their place in your travel line-up, totes tend to have the ideal size, weight, and roominess for shorter trips or easy access en route.

“A travel tote is the ultimate accessory for any getaway,” says Marissa Galante Frank , Bloomingdale’s fashion director for accessories and beauty. “From the airport to the beach , you will find yourself using this tote more than you anticipated, which is why investing in a good one is key.”

It can be a challenge to find the right tote that can hold everything you need without becoming too heavy or cumbersome. So we surveyed 40 of our editors to find out which totes they swear by for commuting, vacationing, and everything in between. We asked them to rate each tote on size, organization, durability, and comfort, and after receiving their responses, we compiled this list of the best travel tote bags.

Best Overall

Quince revive nylon large tote.

Fabric: Recycled nylon, recycled leather | Sizes: 13" H x 17" W x 5" D | Colors: 5

To put it simply, we love this tote. We’ve taken it on work trips, vacations, beach days, errand runs, and it always makes packing a breeze. The spacious interior has multiple compartments and a 15-inch laptop sleeve . Having two open pockets on the outside also makes our life easier by giving us a place to quickly tuck away our phone. Despite all that it’s able to carry, the bag distributes weight evenly and doesn’t get super heavy. We find the $90 price point a good middle ground for a travel tote, and all the details, like the leather trims, magnetic closures, and five stylish colorways make it worth the price. Not to mention that the water-resistant nylon is made from recycled water bottles and the leather is recycled as well. In fact, we can’t think of anything we would change.

Best Budget

Baggu duck bag.

Fabric: Cotton | Sizes: 15.5" × 11.5" × 4.75" | Colors: 11

Who says you have to spend a ton of money for a high quality tote bag? Baggu’s Duck Bag checks off all the features we are looking for while coming in at less than $40. The bag is large enough to fit our 15-inch laptop and can still hold other essentials like a full size water bottle, books, and snacks. A zipped interior pocket keeps our valuables secured and handy. Made from recycled cotton canvas , the tote is extremely durable and easy to clean . Even after spilling an entire burrito inside—epic fail, we know—we were able to throw it into the wash and get it back to looking clean without compromising the fabric or quality. In addition to the top handle, the bag comes with an adjustable crossbody strap that’s actually long enough to accommodate plus-sizes. Add in the fun patterns, and this bag is a winner all around.

Best Carry-On

Béis east to west tote.

Fabric: Recycled polyester, recycled faux leather | Sizes: W 17.13" x H 14.17" x D 9.06" | Colors: Black, Beige

In an age where airline fees keep on climbing, you can only afford to bring the most functional travel bags. This one from Beis is so efficient, we've used it as a carry-on. No inch is wasted, and inside you'll find a padded laptop sleeve (fits 13-inch or 15-inch), one large zippered pocket, two cellphone pockets, two water bottle pockets, and two pen pockets. We can't count all the times we scrambled to find a pen during a trip, and this bag finally gives it a place.

The outside is strategically designed as well. This is one of the few totes that has both a short and long handle in addition to a removable shoulder strap . And we love how the key leash is inside the outside zipped pocket—so often they are inside the main compartment, leaving us still digging around for the keys. The luggage sleeve allows us to zip through the airport and the zipped top ensures that even if our luggage tips over, nothing will fall out. Made from recycled polyester with a recycled faux leather trim , this tote is sustainable and durable.

Best Zippered

Longchamp tote bag.

Material: Leather, Recycled polyamide canvas with inside coating | Dimensions: 12.2" L x 11.8" H x 7.5" W | Colors: 7

Longchamp’s Pliage Tote Bag is iconic for good reason. Similar to the L.L. Bean Boat and Tote, it’s the type of unstructured bag where you can throw a ton of stuff inside while the top zipper keeps everything secure, and the nylon and leather exterior looks stylish. Not to mention leather and nylon are durable and easy to keep clean.

We love to take this bag on international trips, since it’s roomy enough to hold packing cubes and easily fits under an airplane seat, or we can fold it down into a suitcase when not in use. It’s light and sleek enough to use as a purse while sightseeing, and we appreciate the extra security of the top zipper. There’s two flap pockets on the inside that can store your keys, passport, or wallet, so you aren’t digging around the bag to find them. The luxe designs and materials mean you'll be using this tote for years to come.

Best Weekender

Mz wallace large metro tote deluxe.

Material: Nylon | Dimensions: 14.5" L ×11" W × 14.5" H | Colors: 9

Finding the right tote for a weekend getaway can be tricky, since you need something that can hold everything from clothes to cosmetics to electronics. Cue the MZ Wallace Metro Tote. Dubbed the Mary Poppins bag, this tote strikes the right balance of endless space and organization. We get six pockets on the inside and five pockets on the outside with ample room in the middle to hold bulky items like a laptop and clothes. All the pockets are zipped , so we don’t have to worry about things falling out as we throw this into our car. Plus, the bag comes with three detachable pouches that we love to use for our beauty products and chargers. Despite how much we pack into this bag, the quilted nylon remains incredibly lightweight . And for trips that involve flights, we can just stick this bag on top of our suitcase thanks to the nifty luggage sleeve .

Yet we use this bag for way more than just weekend trips . It’s sleek and stylish enough to take into the office, and the extra-wide straps leave our shoulders-pain free during our commute. Plus, there’s a detachable crossbody strap . If you've seen this bag all over your Insta feed and in IRL, now you know why.

Best for Work

Caraa studio large leather tote.

Material: Leather, waterproof nylon | Dimensions: 13" x 18" x 7.5" | Colors: Black

Several editors swear by the Caraa Studio Tote as their work bag , and here’s why: there’s a pocket for any scenario imaginable. Besides the standard laptop pocket—which can hold a 17-inch device —there’s eight pockets for all our essentials as well as a water bottle holder so we stay hydrated yet spill-free. Even if we were to spill inside the bag, it wouldn't be the end of the world, as the interior is made from waterproof, antimicrobial nylon .

When we're rushing to take the subway, every second counts, so we appreciate all the small conveniences like a key leash , an exterior phone pocket , and a covered shoe compartment to store our flats or sneakers. And whenever we get tired of wearing the bag over our shoulder, we use the detachable straps to convert it into a chic backpack instead. Not only is the Italian leather gorgeous, but the pebbled texture makes it more durable and resistant to scratches and scuffs. Yes this tote is more expensive, but it's made our morning commute less stressful, which is priceless.

Best Canvas

L.l.bean boat and tote bag.

Fabric: Cotton | Sizes: 15" H x 17" W x 7½" D (Large) | Colors: 13

While sometimes we want a bag with all the bells and whistles, other times we want a simple tote bag that can lug anything and be stuffed into any corner. Hello, the L.L. Bean Boat and Tote Bag. Made from heavyweight canvas with a reinforced flat bottom and no pockets, this bag can be stuffed to the brim and then folded up when not in use. It’s our go-to bag for weekend trips, beach days, grocery shopping, etc. and it always holds everything we need—the brand has tested it to hold up to 500 pounds . Though we personally love the convenience of being able to reach in and grab anything from the open top , if you prefer extra security, it also comes in a zipped version. The white canvas and colorful straps will never go out of style, and you can choose from 13 different colors and add a monogram for only $8 . The bag ranges from small to extra large , and if you want to easily wear it over your shoulder, we recommend ordering the long straps. It honestly may be the best $40 you’ll ever spend.

Best Leather

Bandolier tote bag.

If you prefer the look of a leather tote , we adore this one from Bandolier. Crafted from pebbled leather , it's more durable than smooth leather designs that can scuff easily. Besides the scrumptious material, the tote is the ideal size for trips and going to the office. We usually end up throwing our sunglasses somewhere in our tote, but this bag actually has a special compartment for them, in addition to a key leash, 15-inch laptop sleeve, and additional zip pockets. After filing the bag with all our items, it doesn’t weigh us down or become bulky. Though it doesn’t zip close, it does have a magnetic closure for extra security.

Best for Outdoors

Carhartt legacy east/west tote.

Material: Polyester | Dimensions: 16.5" x 13.5" x 7" | Colors: Black, Carhartt Brown

Outdoor trips require bags that are highly durable and versatile, such as this bag from Carhartt, which is made from water-repellent polyester . We love how we can keep our personal items organized for a road trip or camping getaway, without needing to worry about the bag staying dry or the fabric getting wrecked. The spacious tote also features plenty of pockets on both the inside and outside, including a zip-closure main compartment and long divider pocket , and it’s available in two neutral colors. After getting this tote in 2018, it’s still going strong.

Best Designer

Marc jacobs the medium tote bag.

Fabric:  Cotton Canvas | Sizes: 13" L x 6" D x 11" H | Colors: 6

If your style is more of using a tote as your catch-all, this bag is definitely for you. “While this bag doesn't have as many compartments or the pass through sleeve for suitcases, I've found it's a great travel option," says fashion stylist Ashlyn Greer . "My laptop fits securely inside, and it sits easily on top of my suitcase for rolling through the airport." Greer also loves how you can take this bag from airport to meeting due to its stylish nature. In addition to a top handle, it also has a removable crossbody strap when we want to go hands free. Made from cotton canvas , the bag is meant to fade and relax over time, for a lived-in look.

What to Look for in a Travel Tote

  • Material: Material is without a doubt a key player in your decision when getting a travel bag. For a super long-lasting option, we recommend keeping an eye out for full-grain leather or pebbled leather since it’s more durable and won’t show scuffs or scratches easily. If leather is not your vibe, we recommend a fabric that will be either stain-resistant or easy to clean, like nylon or polyester. A cotton canvas tote, can also be a great option, as it often can be hand or machine washed.
  • Organization: The way you organize your bag is personal—and you should find the bag that works to your advantage. The obvious answer is if you like a lot of organization, choose the bag with more pockets. For long distance travel, we recommend looking for a bag with interior pockets and zippered exterior pockets. If you’re more of a catch-all bag kind of person, we recommend looking for a flat-canvas bottom and a structured silhouette to help you stay organized even with less pockets.
  • Color: “I often opt for versatile shades like black, brown, or neutrals that seamlessly complement my travel wardrobe,” says Deseri Kelley , founder of a luxury handbag brand. But if you like your accessories to make more of a statement, we recommend sticking with deep hues of statement colors such as deep reds, greens, oranges, etc. You’ll still get a pop of color without dirt showing up easily.

"The perfect size should comfortably fit everything I require for my particular journey without becoming overly burdensome to carry,” says Kelley. If you plan on carrying your laptop in your tote, always double check the tote’s dimensions to see if it’s large enough.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make with your tote—or any bag for that matter—is to hang it in storage. The constant strain on the straps will gradually weaken them, leading them to break eventually. Instead, you should store your bags on a flat surface and consider stuffing them with tissue paper to help retain their shape.

Some trips, like business travel or destination weddings , require a more thoughtful packing strategy—and this is where the best garment bags come into play. You can't just toss an evening gown, bridesmaid dress , or suit in your carry-on and expect it to remain wrinkle-free. Plus you don't always have the space to pack a portable steamer —or the time to steam!—and not all hotels have an iron when you need one. Wrinkles aside, when packing speciality clothing items, you also want to limit the possibility of any liquids spilling in your suitcase and onto your clothes. A protective, high-quality garment bag you can trust to keep dresses and suits as stain- and crease-free as possible is a must-have for travelers headed to formal events.

There are plenty of options on the market, so to help narrow down a list of only the top-recommended garment bags, we asked our editors and frequent travelers for their personal picks. Whether you're headed to your best friend's beach wedding or prepping for your own honeymoon , these are the tried-and-true garment bags that will keep your favorite pieces of clothing wrinkle-free and in tip-top shape.

Samsonite Just Right garment carrier

Most functional bag

This is my personal favorite garment bag for vacations. When zipped and folded up like a briefcase, it looks pretty slim and feels lightweight. But don't be fooled—this thing is supremely functional. I can fit three formal dresses inside (a few more if they're lightweight summer dresses ) and all of my accessories for the trip. What I love most about this nylon bag from Samsonite is how many thoughtful pockets it has. Inside, you'll find a few small zippered pockets for jewelry and hair accessories, two spacious shoe compartments for a pair of sandals or heels , and a hook to keep clothing items secure. The outside looks so sleek and features a zippered exterior pocket, top handle, and a long, adjustable shoulder strap so it can be easily carried. I love how it keeps everything for formal occasions organized and all in one place. This would be an ideal option to put your formalwear in for a cruise, too.

Calpak Compakt large garment bag

Best for destination weddings

Several Condé Nast Traveler editors are big fans of Calpak luggage , and the brand's large garment bag's thoughtful features illustrate why: It's made of water-resistant nylon and is collapsible thanks to a tri-fold design, making it easy to pack right in your suitcase. Take it from a former bride herself— Traveler contributor Erika Owen used Calpak's large garment bag for her destination wedding in Iceland and swears by it. She says of the bag: “The pockets were so handy and allowed me to keep all of my tiny wedding essentials (hair pins, deodorant, jewelry) safe.” When you open up the garment bag, you'll find four mesh, zippered pockets for small essentials and two roomy pockets for shoes. There's also adjustable closure straps, an exterior pocket, and a top handle that makes it easy to hang on a closet or bathroom door. This one's perfect to keep everything you need for the big day all in one place and separate from the rest of what you packed.

Halfday The Garment Duffel

Best weekender bag

In theory, I love the idea of being someone who packs light, of exuding a vibe of low-maintenance ease. Plus, there's so much cool gear out there that speaks to that energy, like this hybrid garment-bag-duffel-bag by Halfday. It's a garment bag that removes the stress of folding clothes like suits and dresses, but offers the added functionality of transforming into a weekender and carrying all your other must-haves like a Dopp kit with all your skincare and, I guess, underwear. So I took the Halfday for a test drive on a weekend in the Bahamas, and I can confidently say that, though your mileage may vary, it's perfect for short trips. I was able to pack two suits, some shirts, a pair of jeans, and some, but not all, of my essentials; I still had to bring a carry-on suitcase onto the plane. (I also brought three pairs of shoes. I am not, it should be said, someone who packs light.) So if you don't need six outfit options for a two-night trip, this is a perfect fit for you on its own. As for me, give me a shout when they invent garment bags that turn into a trunk. — Matt Ortile , associate editor

Monos Garment Sleeve

Best to fit in a carry-on

Another favorite of mine comes from Monos, one of our editors' go-to brands for chic and durable luggage . I turn to this slim, lightweight garment sleeve when I'm limited on packing space in my suitcase but still want to keep a special dress or two protected. It holds three pieces of clothing and can be folded down into the shape of a briefcase to fit neatly in a carry-on. (I've put it inside my Monos carry-on and still had room to put more clothes on top.) This one feels well-made and does a great job of preventing creases and wrinkles while in transit. I'd recommend this option for business travelers, wedding guests, or anyone short on space. I like the Check-In option for a little more room, but it's available in a Carry-On version , too.

Away The Garment Bag

Best to attach to your suitcase

When we asked travel experts to share their favorite garment bag, the response we heard most often was Away's The Garment Bag. Lexie Alford , the youngest recorded person to travel to every country , has definitely picked up plenty of packing tips on her travels. She likes this garment bag from Away specifically because of how it can be easily strapped to her carry-on luggage . “Checking garment bags can be a pain at the airport, especially if you have expensive pieces,” she says. “It's great for peace of mind to keep them with you during long travel days.”

Fashion writer and Traveler contributor Samantha Crompton Merinder was a bride herself last year and also recommends this one. She says it fits three full-length dresses and that the exterior pockets kept her jewelry and accessories organized during transit. “It makes getting dressed virtually stress-free because your look is in one place upon arrival,” she says. Away's sleek garment bag is made of water-resistant material and features a convenient trolley sleeve.

Dimensions : 22.5" x 3.35" x 20.5" Weight: 2.25 lbs. (without shoulder strap) | 2.7 lbs. (with shoulder strap)

Modoker convertible garment bag

Best Amazon find

A duffel bag and garment bag all in one, this convertible bag from Amazon can be used for all sorts of trips. When you're not using it as a classic garment bag to keep dresses and suits wrinkle-free, it doubles as a regular, tear-resistant weekender bag with a side compartment to store shoes and adjustable shoulder strap that makes it easy to carry. LNA Clothing co-founder Lauren Alexander loves this one for special occasions. “This convertible garment bag can fit so much stuff and is super affordable,” she says. “I have yet to find a name brand that makes one as good as this.” This waterproof duffel has plenty of smart features, like a trolley sleeve, detachable shoulder strap, handle buckle, and several small pockets for jewelry or other accessories.

Travelpro Platinum Elite carry-on rolling garment bag

Best rolling garment bag

It looks like a small carry-on, but it's actually a garment bag on wheels. Lara Kramer , Traveler's former global associate director of audience development, used this rolling garment carry-on for her honeymoon in Italy, Croatia, and Montenegro a few summers ago. While smaller than an average carry-on, Kramer told us it holds way more than you think. “I was able to pack a few nice dresses and my husband fit an entire suit, all of which remained wrinkle-free, which was a game changer,” she says. Kramer also loves that when you purchase this bag, it comes with a plan that covers the cost of repairs or damage from airlines for up to one year, including shipping costs. “Yes, this bag glides seamlessly through airports and is incredibly durable thanks to its nylon fabric with Duraguard coating, but the lay-flat garment bag design is the real gem of this carry-on," says Kramer.

Dimensions : 14" x 22" x 9.5" Weight: 9.9 lbs.

OOO Traveling garment bag

Best lightweight bag

Alison Bruhn , stylist and co-founder of The Style That Binds Us , likes that the garment bag can be folded inside a suitcase or folded in three sections and slipped over the retractable handle of your luggage. We also love the under-$70 price tag of this light-as-air bag.

How to Choose the Best In-flight Travel Purse

Most airlines allow you to bring one “personal item” in addition to a carry-on bag. A purse, laptop bag, or small backpack all qualify as personal items. Here are some tips on how to choose the best in-flight travel purse!

Travel Purse: Using it as a Personal Item

travel-purse

Rebecca Minkoff Julian

Size is a big consideration when choosing which travel purse to use as a personal item to add to your  travel capsule wardrobe  Some airlines limit the size of personal items and may be strict about enforcement.

With that being said, it’s also crucial that your purse has sufficient space for all of your items. Be sure to do a test run before departing on your trip.

I use the Rebecca Minkoff Julian purse backpack, which is spacious enough to fit my 11” Macbook Air, daily essentials, a small water bottle, wallet, passport, sleeping bag liner, neck pillow, in-flight socks, phone, and other small items.

Vince Camuto Nylon Tote

A zipper is another important feature when choosing a travel purse as a personal item.  While many of our favorite purses have a single button or clasp, we recommend you opt for a purse with a zipper.

It’s likely that you’ll have your most important items in your purse, so the last thing you want is everything falling out when you store it under the seat.

Tip: We absolutely don’t recommend that you put any valuables like cash, credit cards, or passports into your carryon, which is stowed in the overhead compartments. While not common, in-flight theft has been reported. Learn more about how to keep your passport safe while traveling!

Organization

If your travel purse has organizational compartments, this is a major plus. It’s important to have your passport and boarding pass easily accessible.

You may want to use small packing organizers to keep everything in place. With limited space on economy flights, it’s best to be as organized as possible so you’re not fumbling around, looking for items, during your flight.

I use this small clear organizer for my daily essentials! Packing cubes also make great organizers.

Longchamp Backpack

Some airlines, but not many, weigh your carry-on items. While this is more prevalent with strict budget airlines, you may want to keep it in mind before stuffing your travel purse to the brim.

On the other hand, you can use a personal item to your advantage by distributing weight from your main carryon bag. This is particularly important if you’re struggling to meet baggage weight restrictions.

Find out how you can pack for a strict 7kg baggage allowance !

Tory Burch Packable Nylon Tote

Because your travel purse will be stored on the floor of the plane under the seat in front of you, avoid material that gets dirty easily and is difficult to clean. Leather and nylon are travel-friendly materials.

Since planes only get a deep clean once a month, you may want to bring along antibacterial wipes like these to clean your tray and seat belt buckle–two of the most germy places on a plane.

Tip:  Don’t forget to bring noise canceling headphones in your purse to enjoy in-flight entertainment and avoid fees.

I try to avoid leather bags because they are too heavy. I prefer lighter faux leather bags with many pockets. One of my favorite is from Matt and Nat and I have also one from Love and Lore that is very useful, but a little smaller, for shorter flights, for example, when I do not carry food.

Lisa

Just discovered this site and LOVE all your reviews and suggestions. Hope to see an update to your travel-purse selections, soon!

Alex

Hi Lisa, thank you so much!! So pleased you are enjoying the blog ❤️

Sharon

I have used a Samantha Brown carry on set the last few trips and have loved them.

Hi Sharon, thank you for sharing your recommendation with us!! 🙂

Sharon Smith

I found a Hynes Victory tassel backpack in black synthetic leather that looks very similar to the Minkoff backpack and it is much less! My daughter used it on a 10-day trip to DC and NYC and loved it. It is on Amazon now for $24.99.

Hi Sharon, what a great find!! Thanks for sharing! Hope your daughter had a fantastic trip! 🙂

Alexa Birchall

Look what I just found! It’s a lot like the Rebecca Minkoff but a bit more affordable. from Nine West retails for C$120 but is currently on sale at The Bay for C$90.

alex

Thanks for sharing Alexa!

mary

love the backpack!! but do you really feel safe with that zipper???? I’m so tempted

Nina

Couple ideas – I once used a huge toiletries bag as my purse. Way too huge to be practical for its intended purpose but perfect for my personal purse in flight. Pockets, zipper, easy to clean etc. Even got compliments from seat mate. I packed a small actual purse for daily destination use. Another time, my friend gave me her unused diaper bag (I wasn’t traveling with kids) & I packed in that for trip home. Wow! Light weight, zipper, pockets, the best! Highly recommend.

Those are some great ideas Nina!

Maya

That toiletries bag idea is a pretty good one. Brilliant.

Teresa

Great article! Do you know which purse is in the photo? Or is it a stock photo? Thanks!

It is a stock, sorry Teresa! There are some great bags in the post tho! Love the Rebecca Minkoff bag!

Eloisa

Thank you for the tips! My mum was just telling me that she found out the bad way about the zipper tip, and I love the Tumi option you give. I’ve been struggling to find the right combination of personal item/purse/day pack as I don’t want to pack 3 different bags for each trip but always end up filling my crossbody to the brim and my shoulders hurt, so I might just give up and try a niceer looking backpack like the ones you propose 🙂

Travel Fashion Girl

I’m glad you found them useful 🙂 Hopefully you’ll find the right bag for you!

JANICE

I have my heart set on the Rebecca Minkoff, but I’m definitely going to check out the other options!

Love that bag so much! Thanks for reading Janice!

Karen M

I love the reminder about the zipper! I hate it when things in my carryon fall out under the seat ahead of me!

Good to hear from you Karen! We totally agree, always have to double check that! Happy travels!

Abriana

I have not had that happen to me but it sounds bad ?

Jen

Such a useful article – thanks! Last time I was in NYC, I found the JETSETTER CONVERTIBLE CANVAS BACKPACKat Henri Bendel (which I originally read about here) and I am hooked!

Thanks for reading Jen! Glad you could find a backpack that worked for you! Safe travels!

Donna Rabeaux

Love your site. Great tips for traveling anywhere.

Thanks for reading Donna! Glad I could help!

Deborah

My favorite is the Nordstrom Anniversary Longchamp expandable tote. You can only get this at Nordies during their Anniversary Sale it starts our as large tote but can expand if needed. Much smaller than the Longchamp expandable duffel which is HUGE and could no way count as a personal item.

Thanks for sharing this 🙂 Great choice!

All good things to remember as I may start traveling for work!

Melissa

For my last trip to Europe (Vienna, Prague, and Budapest), I used a Rick Steves Veloce shoulder bag that converts to a backpack and a 21″ extra large Ever Moda Moroccan print bag from Amazon, together less than $65 on sale. Also packed was a Scarleton shoulder bag for $16 on Amazon that I had for day trips. As the shoulder bag holds a lot, I will use it on the next trip with either the Veloce bag or the large tote bag as a personal item for carry on only travel.

Glad you found what works for you Melissa 🙂 Good work!

Graciela Villanueva

Great ideas!

Terra

Love these suggestions!

Glad you like them Terra 🙂

Sam

I love my Rebecca Minkoff Julian bag. I used it as my “purse” for a recent trip to Las Vegas for my brother’s wedding. The bag was perfect for trekking the strip with 2 kids. I bought the bag for travel, but it has become my go to bag for everyday use. It is roomy and stylish. I always get tons of compliments whenever I use the Julian.

I Love it too 🙂 It sounds like you’re getting so much use out of it!

Melanie Dunne

I love bringing my fold up ikea backpack and putting my small day to day handbag in that alongside my sucky sweets, entertainment for the flight and camera case – especially handy when when i also have a carry on case and they only allow a case and a personal item!

Great ideas 🙂

Jennifer Laforest

I really love that Tumi bag you featured! I didn’t want to spend quite that much and also wanted something that could serve as a fun beach/pool bag (going to Hawaii in a few months) so I purchased the Longchamp tote in a fun pink color. Hopefully it works out well!

Ooo that sounds cute 🙂 Nice work!

Val

I also like to bring my favorite teabags. They are small, light weight and ultimately disposable.

Great idea 😉

Travel + Leisure / Joy Kim

We’ve all been there: gearing up for a long weekend trip with friends or a significant other. Or maybe a quick work trip for a special client. Either way, it’s not a long enough duration to justify a carry-on suitcase or a checked bag , but you still need to make sure you have enough room for a few changes of clothes and accessories.

We gathered up 61 of the best duffel bags available and put them to the test in the Travel + Leisure lab. We judged them based on capacity, organization, design, portability, durability, and value, and will continue to test them for an additional six months to make sure they stand up to real traveling. These are the best duffel bags for any trip you may be taking, whether skiing or jetting off to a sunny destination.

Best Overall

Bellroy classic weekender 45l.

This weekender is lightweight and easy to pack.

We wish the clips that attach the crossbody strap to the bag were made of metal rather than plastic.

We think the Bellroy Classic Weekender 45 is the overall best duffel bag you can buy. It’s more affordable than many of its counterparts and earned high praise all around. While measuring its storage capacity, we found that it easily had space for four days of clothing and shoes, and we made special note of the accessibility of the wide mouth. Other bags on our list may have more pockets, but the storage of the Bellroy Classic Weekender is extremely useful, including a huge outer pocket that has a key leash and internal organization for small items like passports, wallets, or a phone. The three inner pockets are modest but ideal for keeping all of your knick knacks close by. Snacks, chargers, sunglasses, or anything else you may need to find are all available with just a quick glance.

Another other area that the bag excels in is portability. It comes with two hand straps and a longer crossbody strap, the latter of which kept it secure against our body when fully packed, but also made it comfortable to carry with just a few items in it. When compared to another bag we tested that was the same exact size and packed with the same exact items, this Bellroy duffel felt so much lighter and easier to carry. Some large duffels get bulky and cumbersome on the shoulder, but this was not the case for the Bellroy — it stayed magically lightweight, and we can picture carrying this long distances through airports and train stations.

Monos Metro Carry-All Duffel

This vegan leather bag looks sleek and expensive, but it won’t break the bank.

It would function better as a supplement travel companion than a do-it-all bag.

If you’re on the hunt for a duffel bag that won’t make you look like you’re just leaving the YMCA, pick up the Monos Carry All Duffel, our pick for the most stylish of the bunch. It comes in four colors, each of which looks exceptionally fashion-forward and is made from vegan leather that will only get better with time (without completely draining your wallet like real leather would).

We were big fans of the roomy interior and the thoughtful organization, which we think kept the large main compartment from becoming too much of a mess, even when fully packed for a four-day trip. If this four-day trip involves a lot of walking, we aren't worried. We loved the comfort of the two hand straps and were impressed by the versatility and comfort of the shoulder strap — the shoulder pad was plush and didn’t fall up and down the strap.

The Details: 20 x 12 x 10.4 inches | 4.14 pounds | 27.3-liter capacity | Vegan leather

Best for Commuters

July carry all weekender.

This versatile bag shines in crowded places where space is at a premium.

It may not be able to hold enough for a full weekend away.

Ideal for the commuter that travels by plane, train, or automobile, the compact, portable Carry All Weekender from July is a great pick for short trips, either to work, the gym , as a personal item on a plane, or on a quick two-day vacation. The bag has an internal laptop sleeve and pockets to keep small items in their rightful place, while the easy-to-pack main compartment holds onto the clothes you’re toting along with you. We do wish it had a bit more storage, though, just to be safe.

The bag comes with a pass-through band so you can easily add it to your rolling luggage when trips go beyond a few days, while the brand’s signature QuickPass pocket uses a powerful magnet as its closing mechanism, meaning you won’t have to fuss with a zipper each time you reach for your passport or wallet. It also features a removable padded shoulder strap and external D rings to use as attachment points.

T+L testing editor Jackie Cucco has been using this bag regularly for six months every type she commutes to work. "This bag is my go-to when I want something bigger than a tote but more compact than a jumbo weekender that becomes a bottomless pit," she says. "It's easy to take on public transportation without bumping into everyone, and the laptop pocket feels secure so my electronics aren't floating around."

Best Convertible

Dagne dover lagos convertible duffel bag.

It’s one of the most versatile bags we tested, with the ability to convert it from a duffel into a backpack.

It’s much pricier than other bags on this list.

If you prefer a duffel bag that you can wear in any which way, the Lagos Convertible Duffel is an excellent choice. It’s got hard-wearing hand straps, just like your average duffel, but you can also transform it into a crossbody or a backpack depending on where you’re going, what you’re doing and if you might need to use your hands.

While its cavernous, pocket-laden interior is easily able to fit all of your gear, we loved that it still could be made small enough to count as a personal item on an airplane, leaving your carry-on slot for something bigger. The bag weighs just over 2 pounds when empty, so it’s easy to fold up and stow in that carry-on if you think you might be bringing home more than you left with. We also found that it was exceptionally durable and water-resistant.

The Details: 16 x 11 x 11 inches | 2.15 pounds | 32-liter capacity | Polyester

Best for Camping

Yeti crossroads duffel bag.

This durable bag is built to last, with abrasion-resistant material that will stand up to rugged camping trips.

This is too large to be a carry-on, and the shoulder strap could be more comfortable.

Like all Yeti products, this duffel looks and feels like it was built to last, making it the ideal option for camping trips and rugged adventures. It's made of a proprietary TuffSkin nylon that helps the bag keep its shape and resist damage and dirt. The bottom of the bag is made of a harder shell for extra protection (though this means it can't pack down teeny tiny for storage). The Crossroads's interior organization features really stood out during testing with two dividers that create three sections for separating different types of items and several smaller pockets for belongings like phones, wallets, and chargers. Two exterior pockets on the top provide yet more slots for your stuff (though these two pockets are pretty small).

The bag has three handles for carrying — one on each end and another on top — as well as a detachable shoulder strap. The strap has a firm, flat section meant to mold to your shoulder area, but it could be a little more comfortable. Overall, it's a sturdy, durable piece with good organization, and it's a great choice for longer trips or outdoor camping adventures. Plus, the three-year warranty will give you some peace of mind as you take it on its first few forays into the wilderness.

Best With Shoe Compartment

Calpak luka duffel bag.

The shoe compartment makes this an essential bag for sneakerheads.

This might not be big enough for longer weekend trips, but it does come in a larger size.

We found that the Calpak Luka was perfect for two-day trips, but could easily be used on longer trips as a supplemental bag or personal item, and we especially love that it has a separate shoe compartment to prevent dirty shoes from touching your other belongings. The multiple interior pockets are ideal for socks and underwear, while the shoe compartment holds either two pairs of regular shoes or one pair of boots — a must have feature for a shoe aficionado.

The thick, puffy polyester material is nice to the touch, but we suspect that it won't be as long-lasting as some of the other bags on this list. However, at just over $100, this bag is chic enough to turn heads and spacious enough to keep all your gear in one place, including that ever important extra pair of kicks. It also comes in an impressive color range no matter what your taste.

The Details: 12 x 16 x 7 inches | 2.1 pounds | 22-liter capacity | Polyester | Water-resistant

Best Budget

Gonex canvas duffel bag.

It's comfortable to carry and has generous side pockets.

Because you can pack so much in it, this bag becomes heavy quickly and can be difficult to carry.

Our favorite things about the Gonex Canvas are the price, flexibility, pockets, and durability. We love the sheer number of pockets and zippered compartments that it has. Aside from the main compartment, there are five additional zippered compartments on the outside, and the inside has an additional zippered pouch and two pockets for holding your wallet, keys, phone, and other small items. Plus, it's one of the  best lightweight options around.

The strap handles for this bag can be secured together under a flap, and the shoulder strap is nicely padded; carrying it was comfortable. The exterior canvas won't attract dirt, and the bag protected all cargo and showed no damage or scuffs during our durability testing. We also love that there are several color options and patterns to choose from.

The Details:  17 x 11 x 10 inches | 2.8 pounds | 50-liter capacity | Cotton canvas

Best for Long Trips

Thule chasm sport duffel bag.

It comes with a packing cube, and it's made of strong materials.

It doesn't have any external pockets.

Thule is best known for its car top carriers, but the brand brings its knack for sturdy cargo storage to this duffel bag as well. We were all impressed with the durable, waterproof tarpaulin exterior and the spacious, pocketed interior — though an exterior pocket or two would have been nice. It even comes with a packing cube that can be used for clothing, toiletries, or a smaller pair of shoes.

Coming in four sizes, we also loved that the bag can be held either by the handles or by the very comfortable backpack straps. It's a bit strange that there's no shoulder strap option, but we did not find ourselves missing it. The Chasm nailed our durability tests and is a great option for longer trips or as a weekender for rugged adventures.

Best Packable

Gregory alpaca duffel 60l.

It's made from an extremely durable material, is very spacious, and can fold away into it's own compression packing cube.

It's not the most comfortable to carry, and it doesn't have a laptop compartment.

This rugged duffel bag is crafted out of a durable, water-resistant recycled polyester ripstop material that can easily withstand the wear and tear of travel. It opens wide like a clamshell and is easy to pack thanks to its ample storage space. The interior features a zippered mesh pocketing that you can use to separate and organize smaller items including socks, underwear, or even loose cables. While the bag was able to fit all of our essentials with room to spare, we noticed that it lacks an separate laptop compartment, and we would have liked to see additional storage pockets to help keep gear organized.

The bag is quite large, but it can compress and pack away easily . It comes with its own compression packing cube that can store the duffel when not in use, or you can use it to pack additional clothing — or the bag itself — into a suitcase. It also features removable backpack straps that allow you to convert it from a duffel into a pack, so you can choose what works best for you. However, we noticed that while the shoulder straps are well padded, the arm handles are not, so the bag can be a tad uncomfortable to carry if it’s packed full and heavy.

The Details: 27.5 x 15 x 12.8 inches | 3.4 pounds | 60-liter capacity | Recycled polyester | Water-resistant

We've tested duffel bags on multiple occasions in our New York City lab, trying out 61 duffel bags overall. First, we weighed each duffel bag with a luggage scale and noted whether the weight was the same as the weight listed by the manufacturer. Then we measured the length, width, and depth (height) of each bag and made the same comparison.

Next, we got packing. We ordered dozens of outfits and packed three pairs of pants (a mix of jeans and sweats), two coats (one fleece, one jacket), five shirts, two pairs of shoes, a full toiletry bag, and a coffee mug into each bag. We answered questions that included: how well does everything fit? Is there enough space to keep the clothes tidy, or do you really have to jam them in there? Can you zip it up easily? We also took careful notes of the organizational and structural features of each bag as we packed, looking for useful pockets, compartments, sleeves, and other features.

Then we walked around carrying each bag after it was packed, spending several minutes trying out each possible carrying method and noting comfort and ease levels.

Finally, with the bags fully packed and zipped closed, we pushed them off of a ladder or table several times each, trying to make them land on different parts of the bag each time. We examined them for scratches, marks, scuffs, and other damage, and we opened the interior to be sure everything held up. We then carried the bags around again to check for any changes or problems.

After our lab testing process, we sorted through our team's feedback and analyzed the information to recommend the highest quality products. We continued to test each of the winners over the course of six months to make sure they held up in our real travels. We also will continue to update this article as we test even more duffel bags worth buying.

Other Duffel Bags We Liked

Some of the duffel bags we tested did not make our list of recommendations. They all had positive attributes, but a few things held them back.

The North Face Base Camp Medium Duffel Bag : This bag performed so-so on most of our tests, but a finicky zipper that kept getting stuck kept it off our winners list.

Tumi Double Expansion Travel Satchel : The bag looks good, but it's a little too expensive for the very limited capacity.

Baboon to the Moon Go-bag Big : While spacious, we found it awkward to carry for longer than a minute or two.

Carhartt Trade Series 2-in-1 Packable Duffel with Utility Pouch : It was fine overall, but the near-complete lack of organizational features meant it was not a standout.

Travel + Leisure / Jessica Juliao

Briggs & Riley Weekender Duffel : This straightforward bag has everything you need for a weekend trip. It’s not packed with features or fashion, but if you’re looking for a standard, no-fuss option, this duffel may be for you.

Tips for Buying a Duffel Bag

Comfort is key.

If your duffel bag doesn't have wheels, then you will be carrying it, so you want to make sure it's comfortable to do so. Look for duffels that are lightweight and have padded straps, as well as different carrying options. Many duffels come with a detachable and adjustable shoulder strap so you can ensure your bag is the perfect length for you. Consider a convertible duffel with backpack straps if carrying by hand or perhaps a rolling duffel with wheels. A good goal may also be to find a bag under 3 pounds so it starts out lightweight and won't minimize the amount of items you can pack.

Know your organization needs

Some duffels are simply single compartments, some have dividers, and some have lots of pockets. For business travel, look for bags with laptop sleeves and pouches for things like chargers, keys, and wallets. If you're more of the spur-of-the-moment roadtripping type, a simple, one-compartment bag lets you throw all your belongings in with ease and without too much thinking. If you want to keep dirty clothes separate from clean ones or your shoes away from your shirts, look for a bag with interior dividers. It's a matter of personal choice; just be sure to pay attention to details about pockets, pouches, shoe bags, and other special features before making your purchase.

Look for durable materials

Whether your travels include packing for an Irish vacation or a hike to your local campground, you need a bag that will survive the journey. Bags made of materials like nylon, polyester, and most vinyls are likely to be waterproof , protecting your bag from the elements. Meanwhile canvas and leather bags may not be water-resistant, but the thick and durable materials should prevent against rips and tears.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a duffel bag considered a carry-on or a personal item.

It all depends on the size. There’s no hard-and-fast rule because duffel bag sizes widely vary. But as a general rule, if your duffel bag can fit beneath the seat in front of you, it’ll be considered a personal item . If it’s too big to fit underneath an airplane seat, you will then need to place it in the overhead bin, and it will be considered a carry-on . If the bag exceeds your airline's carry-on size restrictions, you will need to check it.

Can you check a duffel bag?

Yes, in almost all cases you can check a duffel bag. Just be sure to secure the straps and handles so they don’t get caught during processing. If you have a high-end duffel bag, just be careful as checked baggage is susceptible to rough handling during transit. And keep in mind that if the duffel bag does not have a lot of protective padding, your items inside may break, so be sure to keep any fragile or valuable items in your carry-on.

How do you pack a duffel bag?

It’s best to pack your heavier items first so that they act as an anchor and keep your bag in position. Apparel such as shirts and pants should be rolled up in the shape of a cylinder to prevent wrinkling. Then you can store smaller items such as socks or accessories in the extra free space or in dedicated pockets. You can also use compression packing cubes to help make the most of your space.

How do you clean a duffel bag?

How you clean a duffel bag will depend on the material and the manufacturer's recommendations. Sometimes bags are machine washable, but we'd suggest spot cleaning to play it safe. You can usually use mild dish soap and a damp cloth or paper towel to get out dirt or stains. Water-resistant materials may help protect your bag more than materials like cotton or canvas.

Other Duffels We've Written About

If none of the duffel bags above are catching your eye, here are some other standout duffels that may suit your needs.

Patagonia Wheeled Duffel Bag : Having a wheeled option means you can easily roll your duffel around the airport instead of carrying on your shoulder, and this Patagonia option is our favorite out of all the wheeled duffel bags we've tested. It comes in three sizes, and we tested the massive 100-liter version, which is impressively spacious.

Travel + Leisure/Jhett Thompson

Yeti Panga Dry Duffel : If you need something that will stand up to rainy destinations, this large Yeti bag is our favorite waterproof duffel. In fact, you can fully submerge it in water 3 feet deep for up to 30 minutes, and nothing inside will get wet thanks to the locking, leakproof zipper.

Aer Travel Weekender : If you're looking for something smaller in size that you won't have to pay to check, this 35-liter weekender topped our list of our favorite carry-on duffel bags . It's easy to carry with the adjustable shoulder strap, and it has a padded laptop pocket.

Royce New York Leather Duffel Bag : This pebbled leather duffel is our top pick for leather duffel bags , serving as a stylish carry-all for weekends away. There's an option to monogram the bag for a special touch.
