Make Your Own! Total Time: 10 Minutes 1. Add 1-2 tbsp of cooking oil to a sauté pan. Sauté peppers and onions on high heat for two to three minutes. Season with salt and pepper and set aside. 2. Take Home Meals take on breakfast

We’ve been loving the new Take Home Meals being rolled out in our stores over the last few months, and so we decided to think beyond lunch and dinner to spice the mornings up with a new breakfast Take Home Meal!

This Take Home Meal features a cheese and veggie omelette with two sausage links— which allows you to eat your breakfast when it’s convenient for you.

Kevin Buttner, the Food Research and Development Manager at Kwik Trip, said that breakfast has been a long time coming for Take Home Meals.

“Oddly enough, with all of the ready-to-eat breakfast options available on our hot spots, we have still been receiving numerous requests for breakfast Take Home Meals that people can take and eat when it is convenient for them,” said Buttner. This omelette meal heats up quickly in the microwave, and the melted cheese inside makes it taste just like the breakfast you might make at home. Maintaining that quality is important for all Take Home Meals, but definitely presented a challenge when developing the breakfast version.

Buttner also said with all of the low carb meal requests, they were able to fulfill that with the breakfast Take Home Meal. As it stands, there aren’t plans for multiple breakfast Take Home Meal options just yet, but if there’s overwhelmingly positive feedback on the cheese and veggie omelette, it’s possible to see more breakfast options to come in the future.

Kwik Trip is the best gas station in America. Yep, I said it. The very best. From the Kwik Trip food options to the kind employees and clean facilities, it’s always a great place to stop. Not to mention, always a wonderful customer experience.

And when you’re on a long drive, Kwik Trip stores offer everything you need. Especially when it comes to food. Hot, real food; not those shriveled-up hot dogs that have been sitting there for hours. Let’s get into all of the best Kwik Trip food options:

The glazer — a kwik trip staple.

Did you know Kwik Trip owns its own bakery in La Crosse, Wisconsin? YEP. Which means their baked goods are some of the best. Enter: The Glazer. Perhaps the most exciting breakfast, snack, dinner (whatever!) at Kwik Trip.

The Glazer Donut is fresh, fluffy, sweet, and only $0.99. Grab the plain (my personal favorite), chocolate-drizzled, or white-drizzled, and savor every bite of the vanilla-glazed goodness!

• Approximately 24,000 donuts are created in just one hour!
• There is a glazer-scented candle. (Obviously, it smells good lol.)
• The Glazer originated in 2003 and was named by a Kwik Trip employee who submitted the idea to the marketing department.

WOW. Quite the section dedicated to a donut. Try one if you haven’t! It’s worth every calorie.

Pro Tip: Pair with a Karuba Coffee.

Their Karuba Gold machines will make all of your favorites; Lattes, Mochas, Chai Tea, Americanos, Iced Coffee, Hot Chocolate, and so much more. There are flavored syrups, the same ones as your favorite coffee shops, so you can be your own barista. And to finish it off perfectly, add whip cream, drizzle, and toppings. Not only can you make it exactly how you like it, but you’ll save some money!

Kwik Trip Burritos

One of my favorite things about Kwik Trip food is their hot options. It’s not your average (gross) gas station food. It’s actual real food and always hits the spot. And the burritos…oh man, the burritos. They are my favorite Kwik Trip purchase. Even more than the Glazer…

• Beef & Bean Burrito: The ultimate option. But rare. If this is available, grab it!
• Chicken Salsa Rice Burrito: Very delish. My second favorite. Beef wins through because the flavor in this one has a hint of sweetness.
• Sausage Breakfast Burrito: Solid. My only complaint is the liquid cheese. Still good though.
• Pizza Burrito: If I’ve had too many beers, I really like this one. Lol.

Kwik Trip Chicken Sandwiches

No burritos? That’s all right. Because chicken sandwiches are always available. Go with the regular or spicy and you will never be disappointed. Grab two then head over to the condiments and doctor them up. Lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, whatever you like is there to make your meal a little more hearty!

Kwik Trip Brand Chips

Love Doritos? Grab the Kwik Trip brand version —for cheaper! There’s also sour cream and onion, tortilla, or potato. They are always fresh and go perfectly with your chicken sandwich! (Ask my husband, this meal is a delicacy…)

Omg if there’s anything I literally cannot deny myself, it’s these damn egg rolls. Every snack, lunch, or dinner I get from Kwik Trip includes an egg roll. Chicken sandwich with an egg roll. Salad with an egg roll. Donut with an egg roll. It really doesn’t matter lol. All flavors are delicious. And they are always a hot and a fresh food option!

Kwik Trip Ice Cream

Kwik Trip ice cream is all made with local milk and tastes just like the expensive stuff. Plus, you can get them pint-size. Number One Pro Tip: if you love Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked (I mean, who doesn’t?) then you need to opt for the pint-size of Brookie Dough Ice Cream. Omg. I was expecting a decent substitution hack, but my goodness it’s exact. Get your fix at Kwik Trip for $2.75 vs. a $5+ pint of Ben & Jerry’s.

Keep It Healthy with Kwik Trip Snacks

Sometimes you’re coming home after a road trip full of beers and unhealthy food and you are craving something that your body actually appreciates. And believe it or not, you can make healthy choices, even when you make a gas station stop. Another reason why I love Kwik Trip is the partnership for a Healthier America. Here are some healthy food product options:

Bento Boxes & Fresh Fruit

Fruits, cheeses, peanut butter, nuts. Kwik Trip food includes a variety of bento boxes that give you the perfect road trip snack when you aren’t about chasing empty calories. And right next to those, you’ll find the perfect-sized fruit cups. Watermelon, cantaloupe, grapes, strawberries, you have all of the options! And it’s always fresh.

Perfect Bars

My favorite healthy snack—whether I am at Kwik Trip or not. These bars are made from whole foods only and without natural flavors. They have a variety of options and the best is the Dark Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter. The best part? They really do fill you up with 15 grams of protein.

Prepared Salads

One of my go-to’s when I need some easy vegetables! There are a variety of salad options with fresh lettuce and toppings that come in a separate compartment—perfect if you want to leave something out. My go-to is the chicken supreme!

• Chocolate Milk: Honestly, I’m not a huge chocolate milk drinker but it seems to be extremely popular with the Kwik Trip community (yes, there is a community ha) and is very affordable!
• Smoothies: Stop by the self-serve Fresh Blender machine. Create your own smoothie through a touchscreen menu. The kids love it!
• Flavored Water: Kwik Trip carries Vita Ice which is a staple for my husband and must-grab for flavored water fanatics.
• Karuba Coffee: You know this one already!
• Beer & Wine: If you’re in Wisconsin, make your alochol purchases at Kwik Trip. If you’re in Minnesota, they still need to get with the program. (Don’t drink and drive ;))

• Pizza: They always have great options by the slice. And sometimes there are insane deals on full pizzas you can’t pass up! Plus, they have take and bake pizzas as well.
• Croissant Breakfast Sandwich: People swear by these! The egg and cheese croissant sammy’s are pretty big and a little much for me in the morning, but if this is your type of thing, you’ll love it.

Convenience store chain takes hot food offerings, safety seriously

After establishing its reputation with inexpensive potatoes, onions and bakery products, Kwik Trip convenience stores have enhanced their reach in recent years with an expanded hot food program.

While people are often drawn in for those inexpensive staples, they also might leave with hot food items, or other quick-fix products such as individual beef or pork steaks, salads, cold sandwiches or to-go meals to prepare later.

During the pandemic, many stores tried different ways of offering food to people missing the sit-down experience, keeping and expanding on those items that worked when society opened up again.

“It’s been near and dear to our hearts, something that we take great pride in,” said Ben Leibl, Kwik Trip public relations specialist. Founder Don Zietlow believes in staying the course, Leibl said. “We finally figured out how to sell hot food in our stores.”

A big part of that is food safety, he emphasized. While co-workers — Kwik Trip terminology for their employees — generally have a job they do regularly, they are provided cross-training to give all co-workers a general understanding of information such as preparation and ingredients for those with food allergies. They can choose to get additional training in different areas, if interested.

“We take great pride in the structure that we have in our kitchen,” which can take a good share of the 9,000 square feet found in current store designs. He said Kwik Trip has strong vendor relationships that allow them to install good equipment that works best for their space availability and specific products.

In addition, Kwik Trip is strong on “vertical integration,” he said, meaning Kwik Trip participates in sourcing food items for preparation when possible. This helps maintain quality standards and supply chain connections.

One item he said he had concerns about — both from the food-handling safety perspective and in final product quality — was fried chicken. Today, however, it’s one of their more popular grab-and-go-items, available with a variety of dipping sauces.

According to their website, the hot food program, Hot Spot, was added to all 309 stores in 2003. In 2005, the fresh food program, which included installation of open-air cases for such items as salads, produce and sandwiches, was added.

“We have what we call an FSL that basically stands for a Food Service Leader in every single store across the company. Their main responsibility is to ensure the proper food handling procedures are being followed,” he said.

And those products are constantly evolving, the result of a “food ideation” team that creates and tests new products before they ever reach the store. New products are tasty, can be produced with consistency at stores across Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa, and are created to stand out from what other stores offer, he said.

Although general meal timelines can be consistent from store to store, individual food services co-workers also make sure enough of popular items are available during busy times, Leibl said, and that freshness is maintained through rotation.

Food Hot Spots are often located just inside stores, but the pandemic also opened up other options for customers.

“Curbside ordering is something that we definitely increased during COVID and after COVID,” he said. “It’s something that our guests have really taken advantage of” to have everything ready when they arrive.

While convenience stores began as a place to fill up the gas tank while grabbing a can of pop or bag of chips for the road, they have evolved as wants and needs have changed. Leibl said Kwik Trip works to keep up with or exceed what customers expect.

Mankato/North Mankato now boasts eight Kwik Trip locations, with nearby towns like St. Peter and New Ulm having locations at each end of the main through-town drags, often making them more convenient than fast-food chain drive-throughs.

Corporate representatives for Casey’s and Holiday Station Stores did not respond to requests for interviews for this story.

“Kwik Trip has the best fried chicken in town.” I’ve heard that from several people in Rochester, and you know what - they might be right. The La Crosse-based convenience store chain has worked hard to elevate what people think of “gas station food” and they’ve done a great job.

Full disclosure: Kwik Trip did not pay for this article. I'm just a fan. Not like a super fan that travels to all of their locations or starts a Facebook fan page , but I frequent the convenience store a lot so I think I'm qualified to speak on the quality of their food. The Fried Chicken

The chicken is hot and fresh and it's super convenient for those nights that you're too busy to cook. Plus they have delicious sides like mashed potatoes and gravy.

I love the Karuba Gold Hazelnut latte. KT actually has a bunch of different flavors of coffee and they're always fresh and full of flavor. Their Ice Coffee is really good too.

The glazers are great - they sold 32-million of them last year -  but my favorite is the blueberry dunker.

Sausage Egg Croissant

Their breakfast sandwiches are tasty and they have hash browns too.

Nature's Touch Ice Cream is the best! It's all made with local milk at their facility in La Crosse and they have a ton of flavors to choose from.

I'm starting to kick myself because I think their pizza needs to be higher on the list. I cook mine on my pellet grill and it always comes out amazing.

The BBQ Rib Sandwich

Burgers, chicken sandwiches, bbq sandwiches they've got a bunch of hot sandwich options and they're all pretty tasty. The sandwich below is the one I prefer.

Take-Home Meals

These come in at number 8 because I can't offer an honest opinion on all of them. I have only tried one, the meatloaf, and it was really good.

Kwik Trip has saved me the hassle of running to the grocery store on numerous occasions. Avocados, onions, potatoes, bananas, etc. - they have a ton of fresh produce.

Broccoli Cheese Soup

Now, that it is warming up I probably won't have KT soup for a while but it certainly hits the spot on a cold day. The broccoli cheese is fantastic!

Is Kwik Trip a good grocery store alternative? For some items, yes. Here's how prices compare

With just over 500 locations throughout the state, Kwik Trip is quickly securing its place as a neighborhood grocery and convenience store.

Beyond its usual gas station fare, the chain is known for its fresh fruit and other staple grocery items. But how do the prices compare to those of a typical grocery store?

Using a list of grocery items we have used in previous grocery price comparison stories, we compared what items we could find at Kwik Trip to those at Walmart and Pick 'n Save , prioritizing store brand prices where possible.

Our full grocery list includes: half a gallon of almond milk, a loaf of whole wheat bread, one pound of bacon, one pound of bananas, one pound of 80/20 ground beef, a four-pack of butter, standard box of Cheerios, standard box of Cheez-Its, a dozen eggs, a five pound bag of flour, canned green beans, 18 ounces of strawberry jam, 18 ounces of peanut butter, a head of iceberg lettuce, a gallon of milk, individual naval oranges, a two-pack of paper towels and a six-pack of toilet paper.

In the past, Triscuits were included in the list, but were not for this story because of a lack of store brand alternatives.

How much have grocery prices increased this year?

Although we are only two months into the new year, talk about grocery prices, more specifically eggs , has been a popular discussion among Wisconsinites.

In a November grocery price comparison story, we looked at the total cost of our shopping basket at Walmart, prioritizing Walmart's store brand, Great Value.

The sum of the list, which included items like whole milk, eggs, bread, bacon, toilet paper and more, totaled $46.05, after removing the cost of Triscuits from the list. This month, that same list totaled $48.48.

While the price of eggs has been a popular topic recently, the cost of a dozen Great Value eggs actually dropped from $3.26 in November to $2.87.

Great Value butter and store brand ground beef were the highest-cost food items on the list, at $4.48 for butter and $4.36 for 80/20 ground beef. The highest priced item on the list overall was the six-pack of toilet paper at $7.92.

In July 2022, we visited Pick 'n Save with the same grocery list to compare the cost of groceries from name brand to their store brands.

The total cost of the store brand items on the list in July 2022 equaled $53.42, minus the price of Triscuits. Visiting the store this year, the total cost of store brand items came to $56.60.

A dozen store brand eggs at Pick 'n Save cost $4.69 and the most expensive item on the list was also a six-pack of toilet paper at $7.49.

For both Walmart and Pick 'n Save, the total cost of the grocery list increased slightly from the previous year by only $2 to $3.

Is Kwik Trip better for convenience or price?

With Kwik Trip's decently sized grocery options, including produce and hot and cold take-home meals, many visit the gas station/convenience store for items they might not want to travel to a full grocery store to get.

The chain carried most of the items on our grocery list, with the exception of oranges, canned green beans, full-sized Cheerios and Cheez-Its. It also offers its own store brand alternatives for majority of the items, besides almond milk, flour, peanut butter and jelly.

With the missing items and name brand alternatives taken into consideration, the cost of our shopping list totaled $50.56.

If you were to visit Walmart for the items that Kwik Trip did not carry, the total would be $55.98.

While this price was less than Pick 'n Save's total, Walmart still holds the cheapest total.

Kwik Trip's eggs were $3.99, and the most expensive item on our list was their store brand bacon at $4.99. While it doesn't offer a six-pack of toilet paper, it does have a four-pack alternative for $3.69. This means you're paying about $0.92 per roll, compared to $1.24 per roll at Pick n' Save and $1.32 per roll at Walmart.

While some of the items were cheaper at Kwik Trip than at the other stores, like butter, ground beef and eggs, other items seemed to be double the price than at a grocery store, like peanut butter, jelly, and almond milk.

Kwik Trip customers might sacrifice the cost of some of these items for the convenience of being nearby one of the many locations. There are exactly 501 Kwik Trip locations throughout the state, meaning many don't have to travel far before they find a store, and many cities have more than one.

When asked about its pricing strategies, Kwik Trip declined to comment.

W isconsin’s beloved Kwik Trip is getting its flowers on a national stage. It was named the best gas station brand and ranked highly for its food in the USA TODAY 10BestReaders’ Choice Awards.

Based out of La Crosse, Kwik Trip has become ubiquitous on the region’s roadside and has expansion plans popping up regularly. The USA TODAY awards are a multiphase process: first, the selections are decided by a panel of industry experts, then USA TODAY editors vet those nominations and they're then voted on by readers for four weeks.

In the best gas station brand category, Kwik Trip bested Hy-Vee and Casey’s , which placed second and third.

Meanwhile, for best food, Kwik Trip was in third place, behind Royal Farms and Casey’s.

Kwik Trip has a strong reputation for its food — a collection of hot food items like burgers and fried chicken, as well as packaged goods, including the recently announced limited-release Blueberry Dunker-flavored potato chips.

HOW CAN YOU LOVE A GAS STATION?

Right - it’s generally like a ‘63 Chevy on a -15 day in January. Yes, a non-starter. Not even a possibility. But Kwik Trip is not your ordinary pull in and gas up and getaway place. If you don’t develop a strong desire for the Cinnamon Rolls or the Great Cream Dream Dunkers you probably can’t ever get by the Captcha “I’m not a Robot” tests. And even more addictive are the 2 or3 piece baked chicken pieces. I can feel my car pulling in all on its own whenever I drive near a KT - so I have a hard time choosing a route where I don’t have to fight the steering wheel. I’m sure if Col. Sanders had lived, he’d prefer the KT chicken to any bucket of his own. He knew good chicken and KT might have send him down a whole different cuisine cruise. Anyone for K Fried Gator? Then there’s also the whole range of stuffed breakfast buns and biscuits and croissants, and hot cheesy sticks and - not to mention lunch options. And yes, even the gas is good. Real good. Top tier s by tuff. My cars all like it, even the fancy German one that demands “Premium” . Made me feel good when I saw a guy in a McLaren filling up one day. (And I swear he walked out with a box of Dunkers too!) Anyway / to answer my question - Yes, it IS possible. Actually - it’s LIKELY once you pull in and try one. If that scares you - well that’s OK. Just keep going to those places that specialize in air fresheners and 25cent air machines. See you next time?

First, I love that I can buy quick or Kwik grocery items without going to a grocery store. If I stop to get gas on my way home and need some item to make dinner, it’s easy. If I don’t feel like making dinner there are options for that. Although I’ve never done this, my friend calls ahead and has hot food or pizza made for pickup. Second, I am very judgy about clean bathrooms and Kwik trip always has clean ones or an option to notify staff if there is an issue. Third, free air. That is so thoughtful in my opinion. It makes me more loyal to Kwik trip because they are there for me when my car signals low tire pressure. It’s a brilliant way to have people stop at a Kwik trip. Kudos to the person who thought of that. Finally, I love how friendly the staff is. Always willing to be helpful and make good suggestions. They always say see you next time and I laugh to myself “if only you know how often I’m here “. #kwiktriplove

As once a customer and now an employee at the Kwik Trip in Cameron, all I can say is, WOW! The other Employees were all very welcoming of the new trainee, the guests were always or almost happy with their purchases. Those who weren’t we addressed the issue and made ways to amend the issue or situation on hand. The kitchen staff that I work with all are understanding of the learning disability I have and have done a tremendous amount of work and through many new ways of help in this area of which I struggle the employees have been such great help to me, I would HIGHLY recommend stopping and if in the area do some shopping at this fine convenient establishment. Prices on their products is very reasonable, plus the bosses I work under are both very understanding if I need to make an appointment, something comes up, or I.E something else, but within a 24 hr. notice

USA Today Announces its 10Best C-Store Winners

USA Today has announced the results for its annual 10Best series, in which readers voted on their favorite c-store brands.

This year, Kwik Trip was named the “Best Gas Station Brand,” and Royal Farms was named the “Best Gas Station for Food.”

USA Today noted that the list was selected by an expert panel, which was then voted on by USA Today readers. The chains were evaluated by not just fuel offerings, but bathroom cleanliness, customer service, food and beverage offerings and much more.

The following 10 chains were recognized by the publication as the “Best Gas Station Brands.”

• Casey’s
• Royal Farms
• Rutter’s
• TravelCenters of America
• Buc-ee’s

As c-store retailers are well aware, there is so much more that goes into running a c-store than simply selling gas. One of the fastest growing and most profitable categories in recent years is foodservice.

Foodservice in convenience stores has evolved considerably, to the point where some c-stores can be almost indistinguishable from traditional quick service restaurants (QSRs).

Retailers have made c-stores a food destination, where in the past they were often overlooked for QSRs. It is an exciting time in the industry as foodservice shows no sign of slowing down.

Here are the results for USA Today’s “Best Gas Stations for Food.”

Is the debate settled? This Iowa gas station ranks among the best for food, voters say

Quick. Where do you go to get some of the best gas station food around?

If you answered Casey’s, then you’ll be glad to know it was named second in a new ranking .

USA TODAY 10Best released its list of best gas stations for food. A panel of industry experts nominated gas stations that 10Best editors vetted before readers voted on a final set of nominees.

It’s not the first time Casey’s won in a convenience store battle decided by the people.

A 2019 Des Moines Register online poll, with more than 2,600 votes counted, proved Casey’s was the favorite for pizza, coffee and doughnuts .

The Ankeny-based Casey’s General Stores, which is the nation’s third-largest convenience store chain , has more than 2,600 stores in 17 states.

But it isn’t the only Iowa-based chain recognized by 10Best.

What other gas stations have the best food?

Beating Casey’s for the No. 1 spot was Royal Farms, a convenience store headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland and known for its hand-breaded fried chicken seasoned with its “famous” spice blend. That’s in addition to offering hand-cut potato wedges known as Western fries, breakfast items and more.

Here are the other top 10 best gas stations for food, following Casey’s:

In addition to naming the 10 best gas stations for food, 10Best released a new list on the best gas station brands. Casey’s was ranked third , following Hy-Vee at No. 2.

What’s on Casey’s menu?

Casey’s pizza is likely the first thing that comes to mind when people think about their food. That includes breakfast pizza, taco pizza and a thin-crust pizza introduced last year .

In fact, the convenience store chain sees pizza, and prepared foods, as a growth area for the company .

Casey’s also offers chicken wings, burgers, sandwiches, wraps, salads, chicken tenders and more. The chain expanded its sandwich menu in March with new offerings including a breaded pork sandwich.

Kwik Trip is ranked the best gas station brand in the nation by USA TODAY readers.

The national newspaper announced Wednesday morning its 2024 USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards. Kwik Trip made a couple of lists in the Road Trips division.

Kwik Trip ranked No. 1 in Best Gas Station Brand and came in third for Best Gas Station for Food , behind Royal Farms and Casey’s.

Other Road Trips categories included Best Glamping Spot, Best Luxury RV Resort, Best National Park Lodge, Best Rental Car Company, Best Roadside Attraction, Best Roadside Motel, Best RV Campground and Best Vintage Trailer Hotel.

The awards highlight the best places and attractions in travel, food, drink and lifestyle. Each week, USA TODAY 10Best hosts a panel of industry experts who nominate their favorite places and attractions across a range of categories. 10Best editors look into each nomination and select a set of nominees that readers vote on for four weeks.

Kwik Trip has become a phenomenon.

Wisconsinites will not be surprised that Kwik Trip ranked first in the favorite gas station brand category. Since opening its first location as a neighborhood grocery store in Eau Claire in 1965, the convenience store brand — now based in La Crosse — has grown to a Midwestern convenience store and gas station with almost 900 Kwik Trip and Kwik Star locations in Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota and South Dakota. As Kwik Trip has continued to grow, it has collected a fan base that turned the brand into a phenomenon.

USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin took a deeper dive into the brand and its popularity in 2022.

Part of Kwik Trip's success has been through the use of social media, turning a convenience store and gas station into a more humanized brand voice that connects to its followers. A digital content supervisor told USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin that Kwik Trip has used social media platforms to bring the brand to life, listening and learning from its fans and followers.

Kwik Trip has Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Snapchat accounts. It even has a Spotify account with more than 160 followers who can listen to the company's "Kwik Trip Checkout" or "Chicken Jammies" public playlists.

Why do people love Kwik Trip?

There are multiple fan groups on social media dedicated to members' love for Kwik Trip, including a Wisconsin Kwik Trip Enthusiast Club, Kwik Trip Enthusiasts Club and even a Kwik Trip Missed Connections group. Some fans have held photo shoots at their local stores, even on prom and wedding days.

In the 2022 article, customers shared with USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin why they loved Kwik Trip. Many said they appreciated the company's high standards for cleanliness, helpful and caring employees and a variety of "grab and go" food options. Customers said they feel like they're a person in a Kwik Trip and not just another customer.

Many people love how interactive the brand is on social media, often posting jokes and quips and responding directly to comments on its social media posts. Kwik Trip also leans into its Midwest brand, partnering with various Midwest social media personalities like comedian Charlie Berens and various Green Bay Packers players.

Wawa snubbed? Buc-ee's makes list of 10 best gas stations for food in US

What? There was a staggering upset in this year's USA TODAY 10Best roadtrip rankings for Best Gas Station Brand and Best Gas Station for Food .

Cult-favorite Wawa doesn't appear anywhere on either one.

The other gas station/convenience store with a massive following, Buc-ee’s , squeaked in at No. 10 on both lists.

Besides Buc-ee's, only two gas stations with a Florida presence made either list. RaceTrac, which has 296 locations in Florida, was named No. 5 and TravelCenters of America with eight stores here was No. 8 for Best Gas Station Brands. TravelCenters also was named No. 5 for Best Gas Station for Food.

Wisconsin-based Kwik Trip scored the highest in Best Gas Station Brand in the U.S., based on reader votes on gas stations selected by an expert panel.

Here are the rest:

• Kwik Trip : Kwik Trip has more than 800 locations, all in the northern midwest. No Florida stores.
• HyVee. HyVee sticks to the midwest, where they have over 285 stores in eight states.
• Casey's : There are nearly 2,500 Casey's gas stations in 16 states and territories across the country. Not Florida.
• Royal Farms : Royal Farms is in the northeast, with over 250 locations.
• RaceTrac : Finally, the first Florida gas station on the list. There are nearly 580 RaceTrac gas stations in the U.S., mostly in the south, with 296 right here in the Sunshine State.
• Maverik : They may have more than 400 locations in 12 states, but they're over on the other side of the country.
• Rutter's : The most localized of all the gas stations on the list, Rutter's has 87 locations in just two states, Maryland and Pennsylvania.
• TravelCenters of America : The next one on the list with any Sunshine State locations, there are eight TravelCenters of America in Florida. That's not surprising, the chain extends to about 300 locations in 44 states.
• QuikTrip : There are 1,077 QuikTrip locations in the U.S., but not in Florida.
• Buc-ee's : Known for their massive travel centers with hundreds of gas pumps, immaculate bathrooms and a wide range of food, Buc-ee's barely made the list at No. 10. The Texas-based Buc-ee's has nearly 50 locations in 10 states.

There are two Buc-ee's in Florida, in St. Augustine and Daytona Beach , with two more coming to Ocala and the Treasure Coast . The Daytona Beach Buc-ee's recently announced an expansion with a new 235-foot long car wash .

USA TODAY 10Best Gas Station for Food for 2024

Here's where the outrage begins. When many Floridians are thinking of heading to the gas station to grab a bite, odds are good they're thinking of a personalized Wawa hoagie, quesadilla or breakfast sandwich.

But the only gas stations with Florida locations to make the best-food list were TravelCenters of America and Buc-ee's.

The winner, nationwide? Royal Farms, which offers a 24/7 breakfast menu plus "sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, and their popular fried chicken."

Here are the others that made the top ten for hungry travelers, and why readers voted for them.

• Royal Farms : The chain also sells a wide variety of packaged snacks and fountain and bottled beverages.
• Casey's : Casey's stores have sandwiches, wings, and breakfast items along with prepackaged fare, but they're known for their pizza.
• Kwik Trip : People come to Kwik Trip for the gas, but they come inside for the bakery which serves bread, muffins, cookies, bagels, and doughnuts. They also offer burritos, pizza, salads, soups, and fried chicken.
• Rutter's : Their food service counter is open 24/7 and includes seafood, burgers, pizza and subs, plus a full breakfast menu and a kid's menu.
• TravelCenters of America : Hard to argue with this one, and at least there are some in Florida. TravelCenters truck stops include complete full-service restaurants in their locations, and some are partnered with a variety of fast food places such as Popeyes and Taco Bell.
• Maverik : Inside a Maverik store you'll find BonFire Foods, an eatery making fresh pizzas, wraps, salads, sandwiches, and burritos every day.
• QuickChek : The more than 150 stores in New Jersey and New York are popular for their soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps, seasonal dishes and bakery goods such as their signature cookies.
• Weigel's : If you haven't driven through Tennessee you might not be familiar with Weigel's, which has about a hundred gas stations all over the eastern side of the state. But locals like the doughnuts, cookies, and muffins coming from the bakery, as well as the store's pizzas, sandwiches, fried chicken, and breakfast foods.
• QuikTrip : QT Kitchen counters serve up frozen treat concoctions, specialty drinks, breakfast biscuits, macaroni and cheese, sandwiches, pizza, and tacos made fresh to order every day.
• Buc-ee's : And then there's Buc-ee's. With locations larger than some grocery stores, Buc-ee's is famed for its bewilderingly large array of food, both freshly made (BBQ sandwiches, certified Angus beef brisket, pulled pork, sausages, turkey, kolaches, roasted cinnamon nuts, pastries, fudge, even potato chips) and packaged under the Buc-ee's name such as chips, candy, popcorn, hot sauces, candied jalapeños, the highly addictive Beaver Nuggets, and an entire wall of homemade jerky.

Sorry, Wawa fans. You can console yourselves with one of their new Honey Hot Paninis. See you next year.

Kwik Trip will sell Blueberry Dunker potato chips for a limited time

Blueberry-doughnut-flavored potato chips? Leave it to Kwik Trip to create them.

The La Crosse-based convenience-store chain announced Monday that it will debut Blueberry Dunker-flavored Urge potato chips this weekend in its stores.

Kwik Trip debuted the Blueberry Dunker donut in 2013 and produced more than 9 million of them in the last year, according to a company news release.

“We wanted this based off a popular item and, after taste testing a few options, the sweet and salty combination of the Blueberry Dunker was a real winner,” said Will Churchill, Kwik Trip's director of category management.

It's the second doughnut-inspired chip Kwik Trip has introduced, after Glazers-flavored chips came out in 2019.

The chips will ship to stores Saturday and will be available for a limited time, the company said.

At the southwest corner of Ishikawa, a verdant prefecture hugging the Sea of Japan, traditional craftsmanship thrives alongside contemporary art and architecture in the small towns that make up Kaga City.

Three of these towns — Katayamazu Onsen, Yamashiro Onsen and Yamanaka Onsen — are famous for their onsen, or hot springs. In centuries past, monks and merchant seamen made pilgrimages to these restorative waters. The 17th-century haiku master Matsuo Basho even penned two poems during a visit.

Japanese tourists still flock to Kaga’s onsen towns every fall, when the leaves turn fiery and snow crab is in season. But few foreigners find their way here, in part because the journey from Tokyo has not been easy.

That changed in March. A new extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen, the high-speed train that rockets passengers from Tokyo to this region, now includes a stop at Kagaonsen station. The trip takes less than three hours on a single train.

When I first came to Kaga in 2015, the journey took two trains and nearly four hours from Tokyo. There was little English signage at the station and Google Maps didn’t yet list the (infrequent) local buses.

I had come to apprentice at a bar in Yamanaka, where I met people who craft wooden bowls, brew sake and make paper from mountain shrubs. Enchanted, I returned to write a book about how their work weaves into the vibrant local culture and community; by the time it was published, Yamanaka had become my home.

I set out earlier this year to be a tourist in my adopted home, looking for places that express the unique character of each of Kaga’s three onsen towns.

Katayamazu: Where retro meets modern

In Kaga, public bath houses (segregated by gender) are so ingrained in daily life that many homes were built without a shower or bath. I lived for a time in such an apartment, enjoying the daily ritual of showering among the softly echoing voices of neighbors and soaking in a communal pool of onsen water shrouded in steam.

Katayamazu , a fading red-light district, is the least traditional of Kaga’s onsen towns. Its public bathhouse, a glass and steel box, gleams along the edge of Shibayama Lagoon. The building was designed by Yoshio Taniguchi — the architect of New York’s Museum of Modern Art expansion — as part of a revitalization effort. It stands in contrast to Katayamazu’s dated hotels and shuttered shops, remnants of an exuberant domestic tourism boom from the ’60s through the ’80s, followed by decades of economic stagnation .

I frequent the bathhouse on odd-numbered days, when women get to bathe on the side overlooking the lagoon. In winter, it’s possible to spot migratory Mandarin ducks gliding across the reflection of snow-capped Mt. Haku, the tallest peak in Ishikawa. A cafe upstairs overlooks the same panorama, but I prefer the coffee across the street at Mie Coffee , served in local pottery. (Like many small businesses here, they take irregular holidays, so check their Instagram for hours.)

I stayed one night at Besso , a spare but cozy inn converted from a massage parlor, and walked along silent streets to a bar called Kikko , a 1970s time capsule with stained glass windows draped in red velvet, jazz and soul albums decorating the walls and a record player in the corner. The barman, 85-year-old Tokio Kameya, jokes that “even I am retro now.”

A group of amateur sumo wrestlers were wrapping up a karaoke party as I sat down. Kameya-san poured me a Japanese whiskey over perfectly clear ice and played a bossa nova record as he tidied up. He told me his bar caters to locals (it is cash only, no written menu, and no English spoken) and he doesn’t think Katayamazu has much to offer tourists. But to me the town’s charm is its anachronistic mix of modernity and kitsch.

Yamashiro: A meditation on art and fish

Onsen go hand in hand with ryokan, Japanese inns where guests luxuriate over elaborate seasonal meals and soak in mineral-rich baths. On my birthday in January, as snow blanketed Yamashiro, I checked into Beniya Mukayu , a 16-room ryokan tucked into the woods.

Guests who stay at least two nights can book experiences with artisans — making paper, shaping Japanese sweets or roasting tea — but I would happily spend days of quiet contemplation in the ryokan’s communal spaces. I hardly saw anyone as I soaked in a hinoki-wood onsen that frames a vignette of swaying bamboo, its rustling leaves harmonizing with the sound of running water.

On a map of the garden’s 13 varieties of moss, I recognized the spare typography of the designer and thinker Kenya Hara (best known as the art director of Muji, the Japanese retailer). Beniya Mukayu’s owners, Sachiko and Kazunari Nakamichi, share with Hara a decades-long friendship and exploration of minimalist Japanese aesthetics.

Later, while other guests trickled into the ryokan’s dining room for crab shabu shabu and duck hot pot, I stalled in the entryway, mesmerized by Hara’s kinetic sculpture on permanent display. Beads of water spun across a white lotus-like disc and disappeared into a small black hole described as a ho-sun, a Zen term referring to one’s mind.

In Yamashiro’s town center, I followed the trail of another artist, Kitaoji Rosanjin , a sought-after engraver and calligrapher who came to Yamashiro to study ceramics in 1915 (his pottery is now in collections around the world). I visited a cottage called Iroha Souan , where Rosanjin stayed and carved signboards for several nearby ryokan; guests of Araya Totoan can view his work, including a painting of a crow composed of loose brush strokes, in the ryokan’s lobby.

Next, I took a dip at Kosoyu , a bathhouse rebuilt to look as it did during Rosanjin’s time. Sunlight poured through stained glass onto Kutaniyaki tiles, Kaga’s style of brightly painted porcelain. (Kosoyu is for soaking only, so it’s best to arrive freshly bathed; there are showers at Yamashiro’s main public onsen across the street.)

Rosanjin was known as a gourmand as much as an artist — he became the creative force behind an exclusive restaurant , pairing ceramics and food — and he was said to have enjoyed the exceptional freshness and variety of ingredients in Kaga. These days, tourists and locals line up for unpretentious 2,000-yen lunch sets (they could easily cost five times as much in Tokyo) at Ippei Sushi . On a recent Friday, the chef, Yukio Nimaida, showed me three kinds of local prawns he’d sourced early that morning. The rice he uses, a bouncy sweet cultivar called Koshihikari, grows nearby in paddies fed by clean mountain water.

I asked Nimaida-san what he hopes visitors to Kaga will experience. “Hot springs and fish,” he said. “That’s all you need, isn’t it?”

Yamanaka: A pathway through woodlands and lacquerware

With Kiku no Yu public bathhouse at its heart, Yamanaka’s downtown stretches along one side of the Kakusenkei gorge. On the other side, a peaceful walking path meanders beside the icy aquamarine river; I walk there often, especially in spring, when wildflowers emerge from lush tufts of moss.

Yamanaka is also known for wooden tableware and teaware finished with lacquer made from the sap of urushi trees. The best of this lacquerware is not for sale in the souvenir shops along the main street but is on display in small museums and in service at tearooms, bars and ryokan.

One such place is Mugen-an , a house-turned-museum near the south end of the Kakusenkei walking path. Its shoin-style architecture — including paper doors decorated with gold and rare spalted persimmon-wood railings, naturally streaked with black — reflects the status of its original residents, a former high-ranking samurai family.

In early May, I brought friends from New York to Mugen-an to sip matcha — the same bright green as the new maple leaves outside — and admire displays of tea ceremony utensils decorated in maki-e, lacquer illustrations dusted with precious minerals.

A scenic hinoki-wood bridge, Korogi-bashi, leads back toward town. Up a steep stone-paved side street next to a shrine is Washu Bar Engawa (the bar I apprenticed at when I first came to Yamanaka), where sake and food are served in an exquisite collection of local lacquerware and antique pottery. Last time I stopped by, I drank from an elegant horse chestnut cup made by the craftsman Takehito Nakajima specifically to suit the local sake, Shishi no Sato . On any given night, there’s a good chance of running into a few craftsmen at the bar.

It’s not easy for tourists to access craftspeople’s studios, but at Urushi-za , a lacquerware showroom, visitors can make an appointment to tour the attached training institute — where students learn every step from forging their own tools to applying maki-e — and even try shaping a bowl by applying a sharp gouge to a fast-spinning piece of wood on Yamanaka’s unique style of lathe.

The most immersive experience of Yamanaka’s distinct culture is a stay at one of its high-end ryokan, like Kayotei , where the owner, Masanori Kamiguchi, has spent decades cultivating appreciation of local crafts and ecology among his guests. Across the street, the young proprietors of Hanamurasaki ryokan, Kohei and Manami Yamada, pursue a similar vision. And visitors don’t have to stay overnight to reserve afternoon tea in their sabo, a tearoom designed by the Tokyo-based restaurateur and designer Shinichiro Ogata to feature locally quarried stone and Japanese paper, along with teaware in shades of charcoal and porcelain.

“I believe that in order to pass down something traditional it has to fit into modern life,” Kohei-san told me. Manami-san added: “Ryokans have always been cultural salons.” This kind of hospitality encourages patronage of local crafts, and brings new people and ideas to small towns. Visitors who come on the extended Hokuriku Shinkansen can be part of that legacy, helping Yamanaka, Yamashiro and Katayamazu thrive.
