The ultimate guide to England’s Jurassic Coast

Take a step back in time – some 185 million years back in time – along the wild and rugged Jurassic Coast in Southwest England .

England ’s only natural World Heritage Site, this 95-mile portion of the coast has a name that indicates its geological significance. Running from Exmouth in Devon to Studland Bay in Dorset , its unique rock formations and fossil-rich cliffs amaze visitors from all over the world. And if rocks aren’t your thing, the pristine beaches, charming seaside towns and wide-ranging adventure experiences appeal to just about every kind of traveler.

Here’s all you need to know about visiting the Jurassic Coast, and the best things to do on this beautiful stretch of sand and sea.

What is the Jurassic Coast?

To understand what makes the Jurassic Coast so special, we need to rewind a bit. Well, more than a bit: think 252 million years.

The rocks along this stretch offer an almost complete record of the Mesozoic Era (roughly 250 to 65 million years ago). They’re visible traces of the enormous environmental changes that played out over the millennia, starting with the Triassic Period (252 to 201 million years ago), when this part of Great Britain was a baking desert and the shifting of the earth’s crust deposited layers of sediment on top of each other. Moving west along the coast, you’ll find rocks formed during the Jurassic Period (201 to 145 million years ago), when the water rose to form a tropical sea.

When the sea levels fell and then rose again during the Cretaceous Period (145 to 66 million years ago), the older rocks were buried beneath newer sandstone and chalk, preserving them until millennia of erosion carved this geological layer cake into the remarkable landscapes we can see today. Fossils of creatures long extinct have also been preserved among the cliffs’ many strata, with more continually being revealed as erosion from wind and waves continues to do its thing.

The extraordinary geology is the main attraction of the Jurassic Coast

All along the coast, this incredible history takes shape – literally – in the form of unusual rock formations and beautiful bays. The best-known attraction is Durdle Door , a 200ft-tall limestone arch over the sea linking two remote beaches, and one of Devon’s most popular spots . It’s best viewed from the coast path as you walk over the cliffs from Lulworth Cove, a perfect semi-circle of sea enclosed within bright-white chalk cliffs.

Other geological highlights of the coastline include Old Harry Rocks, chalk stacks that line up with the Needles on the Isle of Wight ; the unusual rock layers of Kimmeridge Bay; and Chesil Beach, an 18-mile barrier beach linking the Isle of Portland with the mainland and forming a wildlife-rich brackish-water lagoon at the Fleet.

The towering golden cliffs at West Bay were used as a backdrop for the popular ITV series Broadchurch , while the picturesque harbor and quaint seaside town at Lyme Regis are the heart of Dorset’s fossil-hunting history.

In East Devon , don’t miss Orcombe Point Geoneedle in Exmouth, which marks the beginning of the World Heritage Site, or the distinctive red sandstone sea stacks in Ladram Bay.

Take a walk along the South West Coast Path

Running uninterrupted for 630 miles from Minehead in Somerset to Poole Harbour in Dorset, the South West Coast Path is the UK’s longest National Trail , taking in the full 95 miles of the Jurassic Coast along the way.

Depending on your speed, you can walk the whole route in about 10 days, or choose one or two sections for a shorter coast walk. Try the Golden Cap circular walk to climb the highest point on the south coast of England; hit the wild and rugged cliff paths around Portland Bill; or wander the coastal paths around the Isle of Purbeck, where you can explore disused quarries and unique wild-swimming spots.

Rocks on a beach showing fossils on Ammonite rock, Jurassic Coast, Dorset, England, United Kingdom

Look for fossils at Lyme Regis and Charmouth

Lyme Regis became a world-famous fossil hunting destination when Mary Anning discovered a near-complete ichthyosaur, a large marine reptile, here around 1836. Today, it’s still a popular spot for fossil collectors, with new finds being discovered all the time. Look out for the “Ammonite Pavement” on Monmouth Beach, when low tide exposes a rock shelf containing hundreds of fossils.

Walk along the beach between Lyme Regis and Charmouth to spot fossils lying among the shingle. Be careful, though: the beach can sometimes be cut off at high tide, and the cliffs are dangerous in places, especially after rain. Amateurs are advised to book a guided fossil-hunting tour rather than go it alone; these can be booked through the Lyme Regis Museum or the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre .

Make a splash at Kimmeridge Bay’s rock pools

The sweeping curve at Kimmeridge Bay is part of a Marine Special Area of Conservation, making it an excellent location for snorkeling and scuba diving. But you can also explore this rich marine life on the beach itself.

The bay’s distinctive geometric rock shelves and ledges are littered with rock pools at low tide. Don’t miss the Wild Seas Centre, a small, free museum on the slipway, to learn a little more about the local marine life.

Cool off with a spot of wild swimming

Along the Jurassic Coast, experienced wild swimmers will find a wealth of exciting pools and hidden coves to plunge into. Chapman’s Pool and Worbarrow Bay offer remote beaches that can only be reached by walking. For something a little different, head to the tidal pool at Dancing Ledge, a man-made swimming pool that was blasted into a natural rock shelf in the 19th century for the enjoyment of local schoolchildren.

Snorkel with seahorses in Studland Bay

Studland Bay, just beyond the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast, is one of the only known breeding sites for both the spiny and short-snouted seahorse, making it one of the UK’s best snorkel sites. Since the tiny creatures are masters of disguise, patience is key and is often rewarded with sightings, particularly during summer. Approach slowly and take care not to disturb the seahorses or their habitat.

Hop aboard the historic Seaton Tramway

Take a ride back in time on board the Seaton Tramway, a network of narrow-gauge heritage trams running through the Axe Valley in East Devon. As well as a taste of history, these colorful open-top trams offer brilliant views of the River Axe estuary and Seaton Wetlands nature reserve. Keep an eye out for local birds and wildlife, including kingfishers, herons, foxes and little egrets.

Get the adrenaline pumping with a water-sports adventure

Boasting a mix of sheltered bays and more exposed beaches with great surf, the Jurassic Coast is the perfect destination for adventure. Thrill-seekers should try coasteering at Lulworth Cove for an adrenaline-pumping way to explore the cliffs and rocks. Or hop on a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) at Lyme Bay or Weymouth for a fast-paced tour of the seafront.

Old Harry Rocks, Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove are impressive backdrops for a spot of sea kayaking – though amateurs would be advised to book a guided tour as currents can be challenging. For a gentler ride, Weymouth Bay, Studland Bay and Portland Harbour are more sheltered spots – and ideal for paddleboarding.

You can also try your hand at kitesurfing, windsurfing or sailing lessons at locations along the coast (try Portland or Poole), or take a boat tour from any of the larger harbors for something less hands-on.

The best times to visit the Jurassic Coast

Summer offers the best chance of nice weather for beach days and water sports on the Jurassic Coast, as well as a busy program of festivals and events to entice tourists of all interests. Note that since this is the busy season, popular spots like Bournemouth Beach and Durdle Door can be very crowded, especially during the summer school holidays.

While summer can sometimes be too hot for hiking, the spring and autumn shoulder seasons are ideal for coastal walks. Spring is especially lovely, with an array of wildflowers scattered across the grassy headlands and in woodlands. These are also the best times of year to spot both wildlife and fossils.

Numerous food and seafood festivals run along the coast throughout spring and summer. One of the biggest is SEAFEAST, the Dorset Seafood Festival , held on Weymouth’s colorful harborside in September.

Winter is overlooked by most tourists, but if you brave the unpredictable British weather you’ll find there’s still plenty to do. Seals come ashore to breed during the autumn and early-winter months, so keep an eye out when walking (briskly) along the coastal paths.

How to get to the Jurassic Coast

The closest international airports are at Bournemouth, Exeter and Southampton, although most visitors from overseas will likely fly into one of the larger London airports.

If you’re renting a car on arrival, it takes about 2 hours to drive to Bournemouth or Poole. From either of these towns, it’s easy to start a road trip along the coast, calling at whichever villages and attractions take your fancy.

Taking public transport from London to the Jurassic Coast is easy

South Western Railway runs a service from London Waterloo to Weymouth that takes just under 3 hours. From Weymouth, you can use the X53 and X54 Jurassic Coaster buses from First Bus to travel to most towns between Poole and Axminster.

The train from London also stops at Bournemouth and Poole, which place you closer to the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast. From here, you can use the Purbeck Breezer services to reach Studland and the Isle of Purbeck.

The best way to explore the Jurassic Coast is by car

The easiest way to explore the Jurassic Coast is by car, but bear in mind that some of the more remote destinations are accessed by narrow country lanes and may have limited parking.

Many of the busier towns, such as Weymouth and Bournemouth, operate park-and-ride services during summer. Use these to avoid getting caught in seaside traffic in the town centers.

The Jurassic Coast also has an extensive public transport network for those who want to explore without a car. Bus services are fairly frequent and call at most of the major destinations. The Jurassic Coaster buses (First Bus X52, X53 and X54) run between Axminster and Poole, while the Purbeck Breezer (More Bus) services connect Bournemouth and Poole with Swanage, Wareham and the Isle of Purbeck.

There are many accommodation options on the Jurassic Coast

With 95 miles of coastline to explore, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing a place to stay on the Jurassic Coast.

The largest town around, Weymouth is well connected to the delights of the coast in both directions, making it a good base for exploring the area. Numerous beachfront hotels are close to all the bars and restaurants of the lively town center, while families might want to consider the popular Waterside Holiday Park and Spa on the town outskirts. For those on a budget, the clifftop campsite at nearby Eweleaze Farm boasts some excellent views.

The quaint seaside town of Swanage is ideally poised for exploring Studland Bay and the entire Isle of Purbeck, with accommodation options ranging from a YHA hostel to cosy B&Bs. In nearby Studland, luxury boutique hotel The Pig on the Beach is known for its top-quality restaurant and dazzling sea views.

Towards the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast, Lyme Regis is another popular seaside town with a range of hotels and accommodation options, while Sidmouth offers up the grandeur of a Victorian seaside resort.

For something a little different, try glamping at Durdle Door or in a Lyme Regis beach hut . Fans of quirky history will likely enjoy the Smuggler’s Inn at Studland, a cosy boutique inn and pub which was once a hangout for an infamous local smuggling gang.

17 Best 'Jurassic Park' Filming Locations You Can Visit

We promise there won't be a T. rex waiting for you at these incredible Jurassic Park filming locations.

jurassic travel

The release of "Jurassic World Dominion" helped make 2022 a big year for summer Hollywood blockbuster movies. In case you missed it, Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) returned to save us all from the dinosaurs (again), this time, on a global scale. Thankfully, as the film's trailer alludes , he got a little help from a few old friends, including Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern), and Dr. Ian Malcom (Jeff Goldblum).

While the movie trailer has us in full nostalgia mode, it's also sparking our wanderlust. We're ready to help you marry those two feelings by sharing 17 of the best Jurassic Park film locations you can visit in real life. We promise there won't be a Tyrannosaurus rex or a velociraptor in sight.

Na Pali Coast, Kauai, Hawaii

HaizhanZheng / Getty Images

Kauai, Hawaii's fourth-largest island, is essentially its own character in the Jurassic Park franchise. The island is featured in every film as the fictitious Isla Nublar, where the dinosaurs were brought back to life, bred, and roamed free. In 2015's "Jurassic World," the island made a comeback as the new Garden Isle. One of the most awe-inspiring film locations on the real island of Kauai is the Na Pali Coast, which also serves as the fictional Isla Sorna, or "Site B" as Jurassic Park fans recall. The best way to see this magnificent coastline for yourself is either from the water or the air, as there's no way to reach it by car. Hop aboard a charter boat with a company like Makana Charters to see the towering cliffs in all their glory, or take to the sky with Blue Hawaiian Helicopter tours to hover over and alongside them.

Red Rock Canyon State Park, California

Remember this terrifying scene from the original film when Dr. Grant explains just how scary a raptor could be? You know, the one where it's described as a "six-foot turkey"? Well, that scene was filmed in the very real Red Rock Canyon State Park in California. It's a rather well-chosen set too because, as California State Parks explains, "hidden behind the scenes in the layers of rock is what amounts to paleontologists as a treasure trove." Explore the park for yourself on a hiking or camping adventure, though if you do find any dinosaur bones, please leave them where you found them.

Kipu Kai, Kauai, Hawaii

The second installment of the Jurassic Park franchise kicks off with the Bowman family having a delightful day at the beach before, of course, their daughter is attacked by a hungry squad of tiny dinos. The real beach is Kipu Kai , a stunning two-mile stretch of sand that was also featured in "The Descendants." Once again, the best way to get there is via the water. Check out Captain Andy's Sailing Adventures for the ultimate ride there.

Halona Beach, Oahu, Hawaii

When Owen, Claire, and Franklin wash ashore in "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom," the threesome appear to be on a desolate stretch of shoreline. In actuality, it's the rather popular Halona Beach . Though it's a bit of a hike to get to, this beach is an ideal spot for a romantic day in the sand. And if it looks super familiar, that's because it's also been featured in films like "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" and "From Here to Eternity."

Kualoa Ranch, Oahu, Hawaii

Kent Nishimura / Los Angeles Times via Getty Images

Kualoa Ranch on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu is quite the star. It shows up in "Jurassic Park," "Jurassic World," and "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" as the wide, expansive space where we see all the famed stampede scenes. The ranch has capitalized on the publicity and now offers tours of the property and many of its popular film locations by bus, boat, ATV, or e-bike in addition to other outdoor activities.

Allerton Garden, Kauai, Hawaii

If you've been to Hawaii before, you know the flora and fauna here are huge — and we're talking big enough to feed an entire herd of Brachiosaurus (Brachiosauri? Brachiosaurus's? Anyway, we digress). That's likely why the location scouts for the Jurassic Park franchise chose to film at the Allerton Garden , part of Kauai's National Tropical Botanical Garden . Come for a self-guided walk or take a tour to learn about all the plant life you can find here as well as on the rest of the Hawaiian Islands.

Kamloops and Merritt, British Columbia, Canada

Cold-weather destinations were also celebrated and featured in "Jurassic World Dominion." As the trailer (linked above) shows, the dinosaurs have made their way to some icy-looking tundra, which in the real world happens to be British Columbia. According to reports, both the Kamloops and Merritt areas served as backdrops — the movie producers even recruited locals in the area as extras via Twitter. Film crews were spotted in downtown Merritt setting up shop across from the Coldwater Hotel , which you can stay in to relive the movie magic.

Valletta and Birgu, Malta

British Columbia wasn't the only destination that made its Jurassic Park debut. Malta was another major player in "Jurassic World Dominion." The Mediterranean archipelago's capital, Valletta, was featured — you can get a glimpse of it in the trailer as Owen rides his motorcycle through the city streets — as well as the fortified cities of Birgu and Floriana. Għar Tuta cave in Mellieħa doubled as a dig site in what was supposed to be Utah, while St. Lawrence's Church in Vittoriosa also makes an appearance.

Manawaiopuna Falls, Kauai, Hawaii

7Michael / Getty Images

Manawaiopuna Falls , also known as "Jurassic Park Falls," is one more must-see Kauai destination to visit on a Jurassic journey. The famous falls served as the backdrop for the helicopter takeoff and landing scenes in the first film. Though the falls sit on private property, you can still catch a glimpse of them by booking your own helicopter ride with an outfitter such as the Hawaii Adventure Center .

Universal Studios, California

Sorry to ruin the movie fun for you, but we have to let you in on a secret: Not all the places you see in films are real. Gasp! We know. Some of the scenes from the Jurassic Park franchise were actually staged at Universal Studios in Hollywood. According to The Cinemaholic , a "considerable" number of scenes were set in Stage 12, Stage 24, Stage 27, and Stage 28 at Universal Studios in Universal City, California. Of course, the folks at Universal Studios Hollywood would love to show you around on one of its studio tours , which also reveal the behind-the-scenes magic of some of its other famous franchises, like Fast and Furious .

Honolulu Zoo, Oahu, Hawaii

Located in Kapi'olani Regional Park, halfway between Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head State Monument, Honolulu Zoo doubled as the Isla Nublar resort's children's petting zoo in "Jurassic World." While there are (obviously) no actual dinosaurs at the real Honolulu Zoo , you can still visit the roughly 900 animals that do call it home, including orangutans, Komodo dragons, lemurs, giraffes, sloths, rhinos, penguins, elephants, and all manner of other reptiles, amphibians, and birds.

Hawaii Convention Center, Oahu, Hawaii

If the fictional Hilton Isla Nublar Resort in "Jurassic World" looked familiar, that's because it's actually the Hawaii Convention Center . When it's not playing a fancy hotel in the movies, it's where you'll find all sorts of events and festivals throughout the year, like the Made in Hawaii Festival, the Okinawan Festival, the Hawaii Pacific Model United Nations as well as health and travel expos and a number of corporate conferences. Check the website's events calendar to see if anything fun will be happening during your trip.

Ho'opi'i Falls, Kauai, Hawaii

imagebroker / Thomas Lammeyer / Getty Images

In the original "Jurassic Park" film, it's explained that the mosquito fossils being used to regenerate the dino-DNA came from the Mano de Dios Amber Mine in the Dominican Republic. It turns out that footage was shot a long way away from the D.R., and was actually filmed at a site near Ho'opi'i Falls on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai. The 1.8-mile out-and-back trail is considered to be a moderate-level hike and begins in a residential neighborhood, so be on your best hiking trail behavior.

Garden of Eden Arboretum and Botanical Garden, Maui, Hawaii

This beautiful garden on the island of Maui was featured several times in the O.G. "Jurassic Park" movie. The popular spot along Maui's legendary Hana Drive is the first place you'll see as the scientists make their way to the island on their epic helicopter ride (skip to the 1:25 mark). It's where you'll find "Jurassic Rock," or, in reality, Keōpuka Rock, which makes a memorable appearance in that arrival scene. Hike the trail to the Keōpuka Rock Overlook for amazing views of the famous formation with the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean in the background.

Limahuli Garden and Preserve, Kauai, Hawaii

Limahuli Garden and Preserve , part of Kauai's National Tropical Botanical Garden , was featured in the first "Jurassic Park" film, although the exact location looks a little different now than it did in the '90s. The area where the Visitor Center currently stands once doubled as the velociraptor paddock, and the place where the raptors viciously attack their captors as they're being transferred in the opening scene. Today, you can visit the garden to see its diverse collection of endangered plants and birds, and learn about the indigenous Hawaiian people's history and culture. Guided and self-guided tours are available, though you will need to reserve your spot through the website ahead of time.

He'eia State Park, Oahu, Hawaii

This dramatic escape sequence from "Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom" was actually filmed in He'eia State Park , on the Windward side of Oahu in Kaneohe. You won't have to worry about over-the-top Hollywood-style CGI volcanic eruptions in the real-life park — just take in the views of the nearby Ko'olau Mountains on a self-guided walking tour of the 18-acre site.

Hangar 79, Oahu, Hawaii

At the end of "Jurassic World," the scene where the characters are reunited in the big airplane hangar was shot in Hangar 79 at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum . Visit the museum to learn about what happened that fateful December day in 1941 — you can still see the holes left by the bullets that struck the historic building's blue glass windows during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Don't leave without checking out the WWII-era helicopters and historic airplanes from all different decades, and touring the Ford Island Control Tower, where the air raid on Pearl Harbor was first broadcast by radio.

Jurassic Period

During this period, Earth's climate changed from hot and dry to humid and subtropical.

Dinosaurs, birds, and rodents. Crumbling landmasses and inland seas. Sea monsters, sharks, and blood-red plankton. Forests of ferns, cycads, and conifers. Warm, moist, tropical breezes. This was the Jurassic, which took place 199 to 145 million years ago.

A Shifting Climate and Developing Oceans

At the start of the period, the breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea continued and accelerated. Laurasia , the northern half, broke up into North America and Eurasia. Gondwana, the southern half, began to break up by the mid-Jurassic. The eastern portion—Antarctica, Madagascar, India, and Australia—split from the western half, Africa and South America. New oceans flooded the spaces in between. Mountains rose on the seafloor, pushing sea levels higher and onto the continents.

All this water gave the previously hot and dry climate a humid and drippy subtropical feel. Dry deserts slowly took on a greener hue. Palm tree-like cycads were abundant, as were conifers such as araucaria and pines. Ginkgoes carpeted the mid- to high northern latitudes, and podocarps, a type of conifer, were particularly successful south of the Equator. Tree ferns were also present.

The oceans , especially the newly formed shallow interior seas, teemed with diverse and abundant life. At the top of the food chain were the long-necked and paddle-finned plesiosaurs, giant marine crocodiles, sharks, and rays. Fishlike ichthyosaurs, squidlike cephalopods, and coil-shelled ammonites were abundant. Coral reefs grew in the warm waters, and sponges, snails, and mollusks flourished. Microscopic, free-floating plankton proliferated and may have turned parts of the ocean red.

Huge Dinosaurs

On land, dinosaurs were making their mark in a big way—literally. The plant-eating sauropod Brachiosaurus stood up to 52 feet (16 meters) tall, stretched some 85 feet (26 meters) long, and weighed more than 80 tons. Diplodocus , another sauropod, was 90 feet (27 meters) long. These dinosaurs' sheer size may have deterred attack from Allosaurus , a bulky, meat-eating dinosaur that walked on two powerful legs. But Allosaurus and other fleet-footed carnivores, such as the coelurosaurs, must have had occasional success. Other prey included the heavily armored stegosaurs.

The earliest known bird, Archaeopteryx , took to the skies in the late Jurassic, most likely evolved from an early coelurosaurian dinosaur. Archaeopteryx had to compete for airspace with pterosaurs, flying reptiles that had been buzzing the skies since the late Triassic . Meanwhile, insects such as leafhoppers and beetles were abundant, and many of Earth's earliest mammals scurried around dinosaur feet—ignorant that their kind would come to dominate Earth once the dinosaurs were wiped out at the end of the Cretaceous .

Where to Visit the Real Jurassic World After You See the Film

The movie’s filming locations and inspiration offer lush vegetation, stunning views and plenty of sharks

Michele Lent Hirsch

Michele Lent Hirsch

jurassic travel

Dinosaurs stalk the land of Isla Nublar in Michael Crichton’s original Jurassic Park . Now, although Crichton died in 2008 , the Jurassic World sequel powers on, with new dinosaurs roaming the same island. Fans of the film can’t see ancient reptiles roam Nublar, of course, but they can visit what might be the next best thing: the island said to have inspired the place, and the stunning locations where Isla Nublar scenes were filmed.

Cocos Island , an island west of Costa Rica in the Pacific Ocean, was likely the inspiration for Isla Nublar . As a filmmaker who visited Cocos while producing an IMAX film puts it, “ Cocos Island looks and feels like Jurassic Park .”

Unesco has designated Cocos a World Heritage site, and notes that it's the “ first point of contact with the northern equatorial counter-current.” That position in the water, combined with the surrounding marine ecosystem, make Cocos an ideal laboratory to study biological processes.

Sound familiar?

At Cocos Island National Park, there are no scientists breeding Indominus rex , the new dino that terrorizes Jurassic Word . But humans have unleashed non-native species there, including pigs , which certainly ties into the film’s theme of what goes wrong when we disrupt an ecosystem. Still, the most exciting creatures to see on Cocos are much bigger than pigs. According to Unesco, divers rate it one of the best places in the world to view large open-sea creatures such as sharks, rays, tuna and bottlenose dolphins .

“ Vast migrations of hammerhead shark , and white-tip shark and fish pass close to the island,” the organization notes, and there are also many whale shark and manta ray in surrounding waters. Whale sharks, the world’s largest species of fish, can grow up to 42 feet long and weigh more than 20 tons —about ten times as heavy as a car . But, luckily for those who want to go diving off Cocos, these sharks eat plankton, algae and krill—not people—and apparently make lovely underwater companions.

Getting to Cocos isn’t easy: It takes about 30 hours to reach it from mainland Costa Rica, and tourists and scientists need approval from park rangers to visit. In the past, poachers have stolen sharks and other animals. But for a place so lush with incredible marine life and so green that Unesco calls its vegetation “ exuberant ,” it just might be worth the trip.

Fans have another option, too: visiting the island of Kauai, Hawaii, where part of the new movie, and previous editions,  have been filmed . Like Cocos, Kauai teems with wildlife, though many of its native plants are  endangered . The “ spectacular Nā Pali coast ,” as one Atlas of Wonders writer  puts it , is a range of stunning cliffs on Kauai that rise up to 4,000 feet above the ocean—and they star in  Jurassic World ’s aerial shots. Kauai also highlights the ecosystem-run-amok theme: Flocks of  feral chickens overwhelm the island , showing up in every imaginable place with few predators. Scientists are  trying to figure out  where exactly these chickens came from; some say the extreme abundance stems from hurricanes that caused captive birds to escape.

Moviegoers can also relive the dinosaurs’ habitat at  Kualoa Ranch , a 4,000-acre working cattle ranch in Oahu, Hawaii, that stretches “from the steep mountain cliffs to the sparkling sea.” The ranch helped provide the  setting for Isla Nublar —and bills itself both as a  sacred, historic area  with varied terrain and as  Hollywood’s “Hawaii Backlot.”  Visitors can take a 90-minute movie tour or explore the land’s striking  rainforests and beaches  via horseback, all-terrain vehicle or hiking.

Jurassic Park Hawaii: The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Kualoa Ranch

What do Jurassic Park, Lost, and 50 First Dates all have in common? They were all filmed at Kualoa Ranch aka Jurassic Park Hawaii! If you’re planning to visit Oahu , I highly recommend spending some time at Kualoa Ranch. I went during my one week trip in Oahu, and it was easily one of the best things we did.

About Kualoa Ranch

Kualoa Ranch is a 4,000 acre Private Nature Reserve. The reserve got its start in 1850, when King Kamehameha III sold 622 acres to Dr. Gerritt P. Judd which included Mokoli’i, the small island known as “Chinaman’s Hat.” Later, Judd’s son purchased more land in the from Queen Kalama’s land holdings to increase the area to the 4,000 acres it is today.

Although it’s known as Jurassic Park Hawaii, there have been tons of other films and shows filmed on the property. Kong Skull Island, Jumanji, Pearl Harbor, and Godzilla are just some of them. Kualola also serves as a venue for private events and weddings.

The reserve aims to protect the lands from development by offering tour and activities that are sustainable and compatible with the environment. Continue reading to see what tours they offer.

How to Get to Kualoa Ranch aka Jurassic Park Hawaii

Kualoa Ranch is about 45 minutes from Waikiki. Kualoa suggests getting to the ranch 45 minutes prior to your tour, and I believe that’s to accommodate for traffic and road construction. If your tour is 11:45 AM attempt to get to the ranch by 11:00 AM and you’ll probably actually get there at 11:15 AM. If you leave at 11:00 AM to get there by 11:45 AM, there’s a good chance you’ll miss your tour.

Tour Transfer

Kualoa also offers transfers from Waikiki to their property for certain tours. The tours eligible for transfers are Jurassic Adventure Tour, Ocean Voyage Tour, UTV Raptor Tour, Jungle Expedition Tour, Hollywood Movie Sites & Ranch Tour, Jurassic Valley Zipline, E-Bike Tours, Horseback Tour, Best of Kualoa Experience Package, and the Half Day Package.

Tour transfers cost $30 per person + tax. As there is no door-to-door service, you’ll want to find the nearest pick up location to your accommodation. Pick up locations are, Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel, Sheraton Waikiki Hotel, and The Modern Honolulu.

Tips for Visiting Kualoa Ranch – Jurassic Park Hawaii

Definitely plan on booking in advance! I actually had to rearrange our itinerary to fit in our visit. The tours we took stared filling up about 3 weeks in advance. Also, I overheard one of the employees talking to a couple interested in taking a tour, and she said they were completely sold out for the day and that they only had two available for the next day.

On another note, give your self plenty of time to get to get to your tour. Kualoa Ranch is about 45 minutes from Waikiki, but there’s often traffic, construction, and there was actually a one-way section that took us about 10 minutes to get through.

How much does it cost to visit Kualoa Ranch?

Tours range from $51.95 USD – $174.95 USD + tax for adults, and $36.95 USD – $99.95 USD + tax for children.

Can you visit Kualoa Ranch without a tour?

Unfortunately, no. The property is massive and there’s tons of tours happening at all times. It wouldn’t be very safe to wander around given the terrain. Also, all tours on the ranch are guided.

What is Kualoa Ranch known for?

Kualoa Ranch is known for being the real life Jurassic Park. On the property, there’s signs detailing filming locations for different movies and TV shows. I saw some for Jurassic World, Lost, and Kong Skull Island.

Our Dorset Jurassic Coast Travel Guide includes recommended places to visit and things to do, accommodation options, tips and more for this beautiful part of England. Everything you need to plan your visit and essential reading for any visitor to Dorset & the Jurassic Coast!

PLAN YOUR TRIP TO DORSET & JURASSIC COAST

Located in the South West of England the Jurassic Coast stretches for 96 miles from Exmouth in East Devon to Studland Bay in Dorset. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 the Jurassic Coast is a popular destination for both UK residents and visitors from around the world.

The coast is composed of rock containing the fossilised remains of flora and fauna from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Rock falls over the years have exposed the fossils. Areas of particular interest include Lulworth Cove, Lyme Regis, Durdle Door and Chesil Beach amongst others.

Much of Dorset is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Other attractions include the South West Coast path a popular long distance footpath and National Trail which stretches for 630 miles and passes through the Dorset and East Devon Coast (Jurassic Coast).

Main towns in Dorset (there are no cities in the county) include Lyme Regis, Weymouth, Poole, and Bournemouth (only the former are located along the Jurassic Coast though)

If you are considering a visit to Dorset & the Jurassic Coast you will find everything you need to plan your trip in this practical guide.

Conservation Efforts in Kauai

What Happened To Brooklynn In Jurassic World: Chaos Theory

Warning: This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Jurassic World: Chaos Theory.

  • Brooklynn's supposed death in Jurassic World: Chaos Theory was actually an assassination attempt orchestrated by the DPW.
  • Her involvement in tracking and exposing illegal dinosaur sales led to the attack, showing a darker and more mature storyline than Camp Cretaceous.
  • Brooklynn's survival reveals a hidden agenda, hinting at her efforts to unravel the global underground dinosaur market in Season 2.

The plot of Jurassic World: Chaos Theory centers on Brooklynn’s death, leading to questions about what really happened that night. The Jurassic Park franchise continues to expand with the new animated Netflix show Jurassic World: Chaos Theory . In the series, the Nublar Six from Camp Cretaceous are young adults who come back together when they become the targets of a conspiracy.

Right off the bat, Jurassic World: Chaos Theory ’s trailer included the shocking twist that Brooklynn was killed in a tragic dinosaur-related accident prior to the first episode – a devastating loss for Camp Cretaceous fans. However, as the rest of the Nublar Six quickly learn, there is more to the attack than initially believed. The fast-paced story includes multiple twists and turns that eventually reveal what happened to Brooklynn.

Jurassic World: Chaos Theory Review - Mystery Awaits In Fantastic Continuation Of Original Series

Jurassic World: Chaos Theory is the perfect continuation of the Camp Cretaceous franchise, telling a more mature story with compelling characters.

Brooklynn Was Almost Murdered (Using An Allosaurus)

The allosaurus attack on brooklynn was not an accident.

Until the very end of Jurassic World: Chaos Theory season 1 , it’s believed that Brooklynn died in an allosaurus attack. Brooklynn planned to meet up with Darius that night so she could show him the illegal dinosaur sales going on within the DPW. The situation went horribly wrong when the allosaurus was released from the transportation truck. Despite what everyone believed, this was no accident. During Jurassic World: Chaos Theory episode 7, “That Night,” a DPW agent named Mateo details exactly what happened the night of the allosaurus attack.

Mateo was paid to make an illegal dinosaur drop, but the other truck never showed up. Upon exiting the truck, he realized that the dinosaur wasn’t sedated like usual. The lock was then undone remotely, allowing the allosaurus to exit the truck and attack Brooklynn. She barely survived the assassination attempt, losing an arm in the process – which explains the blood. It’s unclear exactly how she escaped, but it could have to do with the DPW agent Ronnie, who messages her at the end of Jurassic World: Chaos Theory season 1.

Why Brooklynn Was Attacked

Brooklynn wouldn't stop researching illegal dinosaur sales.

Before the allosaurus attack, Brooklynn began tracking the illegal buying and selling of dinosaurs using the conspiracy theory website Dark Jurassic. She figured out that the DPW was involved and wanted more information . Brooklynn went to Kenji’s dad, Daniel Kon, thinking he was involved in the illegal practice. While he denies his involvement when speaking to Kenji, the money and note that Kenji and Darius find in her closet indicate that he lied.

The note references that Brooklynn and Mr. Kon had a deal, pointing to the possibility that she was getting more information by becoming involved – possibly planning to take down the trade from the inside. This is presumably how she knew about the dinosaur drop on the night of her attack. As she continued digging into the DPW’s dinosaur smuggling, Cabrera sent threatening messages warning Brooklynn to stop. She wouldn’t, so he planned the allosaurus attack to scare her into silence.

Jurassic World: Chaos Theory Producers On Darker, More Mature New Story After Camp Cretaceous

Screen Rant interviews producers Scott Kreamer and Aaron Hammersley on Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, the sequel to Netflix's Camp Cretaceous.

Brooklynn Is Alive (& Why She's In Hiding)

Brooklynn's survival is revealed at the end of jurassic world: chaos theory season 1.

At the end of Jurassic World: Chaos Theory season 1, it’s revealed that Brooklynn has been alive the entire time. After the allosaurus attack, she went into hiding; however, the exact reason isn’t known due to the last-minute nature of the reveal. The most likely reason is that she realized that her life would continue to be in danger unless she gave up on exposing and taking down the illegal dinosaur sales – a goal she wouldn’t let go of.

Another possibility is that she went into hiding to protect her friends. Brooklynn might have found out that the DPW caused the allosaurus attack and believed they would leave her friends alone if she were dead. A third explanation for her going into hiding is that she realized that she could get more done if everyone thought she was dead. She could continue researching and tracking the transactions online without constantly looking over her shoulder. Jurassic World: Chaos Theory season 2 will need to provide more clarity on this aspect of the story.

Where Brooklynn's Story Goes From Here In Jurassic World: Chaos Theory

Brooklynn's corkboard provides hints about her possible storyline for jurassic world: chaos theory season 2.

In her hiding place – seemingly her secret apartment – Brooklynn has a corkboard covered with maps, blueprints, press releases, and photos. It seems that she is continuing to collect information on the underground dinosaur sales with the help of her friends on Dark Jurassic. One of the papers has a silhouette of a person, pointing to the possibility that she could be trying to find the identity of the person in charge of the dinosaur smuggling trade. This hints at a possible direction for Brooklynn's storyline in Jurassic World: Chaos Theory season 2.

Brooklynn could continue collecting information on the dinosaur black market, learning that it stretches globally. Eventually, she could go searching for higher-ups in the business, including “the broker,” whom the rest of the Nublar Six seek out at the end of Jurassic World: Chaos Theory season 1. This would bring Brooklynn back together with the rest of the group, who currently still believe she's dead.

  • Theatrical releases like "Knock at the Cabin" and "Dune: Part Two" are now streaming.
  • Jennifer Lopez also stars in a new sci-fi movie on Netflix.

Insider Today

It's officially finale season over on the major TV networks.

"Survivor" and "The Good Doctor" both wrapped this week, the latter for good. Meanwhile, the final season of the supernatural drama "Evil" just kicked off.

If you're looking for true crime, Max has a new docuseries called "Hell on Earth: The Verónica Case" about one mother's quest for justice.

Here's a complete rundown of all the best movies, shows, and documentaries to stream this weekend, broken down by what kind of entertainment you're looking for.

Streaming on: Netflix

'The Good Doctor' ended this week

Horror fans should stream 'Knock at the Cabin'

jurassic travel

M. Night Shyamalan's latest is an apocalyptic psychological horror film starring Dave Bautista and Jonathan Groff. On the Shyamalan scale from "The Last Airbender" (0) to "The Sixth Sense" (100), this one falls somewhere between "The Village" and "Signs" in terms of quality.

Glen Powell reveals why he turned down Jurassic World movie role

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Actor Glen Powell has explained why he turned down a role in a forthcoming Jurassic World movie that will be released next year.

The 35-year-old who has been promoting his new movie Hit Man , first shot to fame for his role as Hangman in Top Gun: Maverick in 2022.

He recently spoke about the financial pressures that came with the delay of the movie, admitting that the wait almost left him broke.

Now, the Anyone But You star has explained why he turned down the opportunity to be in the popular franchise, which is rumoured to star Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey and Avengers actor Scarlett Johansson.

“ Jurassic is one of my favorite movies. It’s one of the things I’ve wanted to do my whole life. I’m not doing that movie because I read the script and I immediately was like, my presence in this movie doesn’t help it,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

“And the script’s great. The movie’s going to f*****g kill. It’s not about that. It’s about choosing where you’re going to make an audience happy and where you’re going to make yourself happy.”

Fans praised the star for his intentional approach as they said, “Good for him. More actors should turn down roles that they are not suitable for.”

Another admired Powell’s career strategy as they said, “Dude knows if he picks the right scripts and stays out of the slop he can be a huge star more than he is now.”

The Jurassic Park films, based on the bestselling novels by Michael Crichton, follow the chaos that ensues when formerly extinct dinosaurs are unleashed among humans.

Over the last two decades, there have been six movies and various offshoots, including a theme park in Orlando, Florida. The original three films were released in 1993, 1997 and 2001.

Last month, Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey was rumoured to be cast in a lead role in the movie, shortly after reports that Scarlett Johansson is also negotiating a deal to be the face of the forthcoming reboot, which is expected to feature an entirely new cast.

The fillm will be directed by Godzilla filmmaker Gareth Edwards , with Steven Spielberg , who directed the original 1993 classic, on producing duties, according to Deadline.

Glen Powell Turned Down A Lead Role In Jurassic World

“I’m not doing that movie.”

Glen Powell attends the 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Glen Powell said no to the new Jurassic World . In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter , the actor said the original 1993 Jurassic Park is one of “favorite movies,” but that wasn’t enough to convince him to appear in the upcoming Jurassic sequel .

“It’s one of the things I’ve wanted to do my whole life,” Powell said, revealing that he made his decision after reading the new Jurassic World script. “I’m not doing that movie because I read the script and I immediately was like, my presence in this movie doesn’t help it.”

“The script’s great,” the Twisters star clarified. “The movie’s going to f****** kill. It’s not about that. It’s about choosing where you’re going to make an audience happy and where you’re going to make yourself happy.”

Powell isn’t the only star to have turned down the 30-year franchise. Jennifer Lawrence was also reportedly offered a role in the movie, but is said to have turned it down.

Jurassic World Sequel

In January 2024, the next Jurassic World installment was confirmed to be in development from screenwriter David Koepp, who wrote the first two Jurassic Park films. The film is set to be directed by Gareth Edwards and released in Summer 2025.

Deadline reported in April 2024 that Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey has been cast in the movie , while Scarlett Johansson is also in talks for a leading role. Bailey later confirmed his Jurassic World role on The Tonight Show .

'Jurassic World' sequel was turned down by Glen Powell.

“I mean it’s mind-blowing and it’s brilliant. I remember going to see Jurassic Park with my family,” he said. “It’s history and it’s the John Williams score. It’s [Steven] Spielberg. I have got nightmares for sort of 30 years, so now my nightmare has come true.”

The upcoming release follows the franchise’s original trilogy (1993’s Jurassic Park , 1997’s The Lost World , and 2001’s Jurassic Park III ), and the franchise’s second trilogy (2015’s Jurassic World , 2018’s Fallen Kingdom , and 2022’s Dominion ), the latter of which was fronted by Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard .
