The jungle experience doesn’t get much more immersive than the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. HBD Sundy Praia Príncipe Island

At first glance, the idyllic coast of Príncipe, a tiny island off the west coast of Africa, only reveals white sand beaches, cerulean water, and copious palm trees. But that’s the way the HBD Príncipe’s hotel founder Mark Shuttleworth designed it. Take a closer look, and you’ll find that Sundy Praia’s 15 luxurious tented suites are inconspicuous among the foliage. HBD’s guests are immersed in Príncipe’s rainforest, which was moments away from being converted into a palm oil plantation before tourism arrived a decade ago.

Maruia River Retreat

The South Island of New Zealand is the country’s adventure hub, and the Maruia River Retreat capitalizes on the expansive nature of the region. The retreat features seven luxury villas nestled among a 500-acre nature estate, on which guests can privately enjoy the surrounding beech forest. There is no shortage of gourmet food and luxury treatments to help guests kick back—forest bathing, guided walks, and restorative spa treatments are just some of the ways retreat-goers can expect to facilitate their rejuvenation in the jungle.

Copal Tree Lodge

The tiny Central American country of Belize has a wide range of environments—including reefs, caves, Mayan ruins, and waterfalls—but its densest jungle is found in the southern region of the country near the town of Punta Gorda. Silky Oaks Lodge Arrow

Australia isn’t just home to a vast red desert and metropolitan cities—there is also plenty of dense jungle to be found. In Queensland, the Daintree Rainforest is a tropical destination home to the Silky Oaks Lodge, a luxury hideaway with 40 treehouse suites that integrate guests into the landscape. Keep an eye out for any one of the 315 mammal species living in the Daintree, 13 of which are endemic, like the Boyd's forest dragon. Mashpi Lodge

Sixty miles northwest of Quito is Mashpi Lodge, a luxury escape built around the topography of Ecuador’s cloud forest. Every room has floor to ceiling windows, which when combined with the lodge’s open-air terrace, a canopy-skimming sky bike, and nature activities, means guests never forget that they are enmeshed in the rainforest. Some 400 wildlife species—including 36 endemic ones—call the reserve around Mashpi Lodge home. The dining is another highlight of the Mashpi experience: flavors of the Ecuadorian forests are utilized, such as wild garlic and chillangua. The hotel takes its responsibility to the region seriously, and as such, the staff is predominantly local to the area.

Belmond’s Hotel Das Cataratas is the only accommodation within the bounds of Iguazú National Park, home to the impressive Iguazú Falls. The Sayan Valley is home to a sacred forest from which the floating lotus pond of the Four Seasons Sayan emerges. Ultimate Jungle Packing List – What to Pack for a Jungle Trip

Have you ever ended up in the middle of nowhere and realised that you forgot to pack some essential items?

For me, one of the biggest appeals of staying in a jungle lodge in the middle of the Amazon was its remoteness. Far away from cities, traffic and big malls, I could enjoy nature. But it also meant I had to be extra careful when packing so I wouldn’t forget anything important.

You do not want to visit the jungle without insect repellent.

Unfortunately, knowing what to take to the rainforest can be difficult. That’s why we want to help you with our experience.

No matter whether you’re staying in the Amazon or a different part of the world, you will find this jungle packing list helpful. We used all of these items and were very glad to have them, so make sure to pack them before leaving.

#1 long clothes.

Are you wondering what to wear in the rainforest?

The jungle is so hot and humid that I wanted to wear as little as possible. So when I packed, I was tempted to bring lots of t-shirts and shorts.

But there are numerous reasons why long sleeves and trousers are the best jungle clothes.

First of all, they protect you from the sun. Second, they protect you from scratches and burns while walking through the woods. Maybe you can recognise poison ivy back home and know how to avoid it. But in the jungle? I wouldn’t know how to tell which plants can hurt me and which ones can’t.

Third, and this is very important, long sleeves can protect you from mosquitos and other animals that try to eat you.

When choosing your clothes, go for light and natural fabrics. Thin fabrics are ideal, and a loose fit so the air can circulate and you don’t get too hot. I have some cheap white long sleeves that I took into the jungle. They were inexpensive, light and airy, making them the perfect clothes for the rainforest.

Also, look into quick dry fabrics ( like this shirt from Columbia ). Your clothes will get wet from rain, sweat and general humidity. You might want to wash them. If you don’t want to wait for days until they dry, then you’re going to love quick-drying fabrics.

And if you don’t want to stock up on special clothes just for this trip, then try to take thin and light materials at least, so they dry faster. You don’t need to buy expensive jungle trekking clothes but can choose the lightest ones you have at home.

#2 Fleece jacket

Depending on where in the world you visit the jungle, you might not need it. For example, if you travel to the Amazon, this doesn’t necessarily need to be on your packing list. But in some jungles, it can cool down in the evening. The humidity combined with a breeze can either offer much-wanted relief from the heat or make you feel cold.

Take a fleece jacket just in case, especially if you’re going to a region where you know it will be colder at night. I love my Jack Wolfskin fleece jacket and take it on all my trips.

#3 Swimsuit

Most of the time, you won’t want to swim in the jungle rivers. You might have a pool next to your lodge, though, or you might arrive at a waterfall where you can jump in. Therefore, make sure to pack a swimsuit. It’s always better to be prepared, so you don’t miss out while everyone has a great time cooling down in the water.

#4 Underwear

It goes without saying, but make sure to pack some underwear and also some pyjamas. You don’t need anything special for this, just make sure it’s light. Also, if you’re staying for longer, you might have the chance to wash your underwear. Your lodge might even have a laundry service, so you can just take a few pairs and have them cleaned from time to time.

#5 Long socks

Do you know what leeches love? Bare ankles. Therefore, bring a few pairs of long socks. You can stuff your pants into your socks, and it’ll protect you not just from leeches but also from all other kinds of insects that want to crawl into your pants.

Long socks are also some of the most important things to bring for jungle trekking.

Once again, make sure they dry quickly. Socks get wet very fast, so you’ll be happy if they dry overnight. If you are willing to invest in some rainforest clothes, consider these Icebreaker Merino wool socks ( click here for the men’s model ) which are light and dry very quickly.

#6 A pair of comfortable shoes

Shoes are a topic where Daniel and I often disagree.

If you google what to pack for the jungle, you will find that most people recommend hiking boots. Daniel, who has a proper pair of boots, absolutely loves them and wears them everywhere.

Personally, I wear trainers. When I packed for my trip around the world , I had to decide what to carry, and I concluded that trainers are the most versatile and easy to take along. You can wear them in cities, you can wear them on hikes, and yes, you can even wear them in the jungle.

I tested my shoes on a jungle hike in Malaysia. The shoes were soaked five minutes into the trek when we had to cross a river. They remained surprisingly comfortable, even when completely wet, and dried overnight. Plus, I never felt that they didn’t offer me enough support.

In case you’re wondering, I used a pair of Nike trainers in Malaysia and when visiting the Amazon. Now, I own a pair of Skechers sneakers , and they’re doing the job just as well. Plus, they’re much lighter to carry than special jungle hiking gear.

If you ever need rubber boots, by the way, most jungle lodges offer you the chance to rent them. Usually, you don’t have to buy a pair and carry it across the globe just to use it once during your jungle trip.

#7 A pair of flip flops or sandals

In the evening, nothing feels better than taking off your shoes, especially if they’re damp. Take a pair of sandals or flip flops to wear, so you don’t have to go barefoot. You don’t need any special equipment for this, just take whatever feels comfortable for you.

#8 Rain jacket

Did you know that the jungle feels very wet? I was always drenched in sweat due to the high humidity. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that it often rains in a place as green and humid.

Plus, if you’re putting together a packing list for an Amazon rainforest trip, the name of the jungle already implies that you’re going to encounter rain. And the same applies to jungles all over the world.

Be prepared and bring either a rain jacket or rain poncho. The good thing about tropical rain is that it usually stops after half an hour and the jacket will protect you during that time.

Plus, rain jackets also provide excellent protection from mosquito bites. They help you save DEET, as those nasty insects cannot bite through them. Yes, going out with a rain poncho in the heat of the day sucks. You will be drenched in sweat.

But at least, you will not get bitten.

If you’re wondering which jacket I’m using, I have the Tierra Backup rain jacket. It only seems to be available in a few countries in Europe, which is a shame because I absolutely love it. It’s super lightweight and well worth the money I spent on it.

Daniel used to have the Foray Jacket from Outdoor Research , which he also loved until it got stolen.

As an alternative, you can also buy a rain poncho . While you can pick up a cheap, disposable one, those end up in landfills after a few uses, so we recommend getting a reusable one.

#9 Toiletries

This includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, body wash, deodorant and a hairbrush. Basically, take what you usually use but leave any make-up at home. With the high humidity inside the jungle, it’ll soon run down your face, so it’s not worth putting it on.

As a bonus, look for biodegradable toiletries before you set out. You don’t want to contribute to polluting the jungle!

#10 Insect repellent

I do not think I have ever seen as many mosquitos as in the Amazon during the wet season. We spent most of our time on a boat, so it wasn’t a problem, but the moment we stopped, thousands of them came to attack us. My guide’s legs were black with mosquitos. I did not even know that such a thing was possible!

Whatever you do, do not forget your insect repellent for a trip to the jungle. I brought 50% DEET, and it was barely enough. Therefore, try to get a repellent with at least 40% DEET . Yes, DEET is not great, but mosquitoes can transmit many diseases, including malaria, dengue, zika and yellow fever.

If you’re not going in the wet season, things might be a bit better for you. You can also spray your clothes, or wear a rain jacket, so the mosquitoes can’t bite you.

As an alternative, if you don’t like DEET, you can try a spray with picaridin . They are very popular here in Germany and work very well. I used it for many years and found it to be as efficient as DEET while not being as aggressive to the skin.

#11 Sunscreen

The jungle looks dark, and you might not feel that you’re getting much sunlight. Nevertheless, make sure to take sunscreen and apply it every day. Also, re-apply it multiple times during the day as it tends to wear off.

Since you will get sweaty, we recommend buying waterproof sunscreen . I always take SPF50, but if you have very sensitive skin, you could also go for a higher level of protection.

#12 Sunglasses

Just like you need sunscreen, you also need sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV-light damage. Plus, if you go out on a boat, you will be glad to have those sunglasses with you.

#13 Headtorch

The thing about remote jungle lodges is that they are usually not connected to the electric grid. That means that they rely on generators and electricity is often limited to a couple of hours in the evening.

Wildlife is most active early in the morning, so you will get up early and go to bed early. But when you have to get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, at a time when most jungle lodges have switched off their electricity, you will be glad to have a headtorch.

Yes, you could use your phone. But if you have ever tried to pull your pants back up, awkwardly balancing your phone at the same time and trying not to drop it into the toilet, you will love a headlamp. It’s one of those jungle essentials that are easy to pack and super helpful.

Head torches are also great for late evening walks, so you have both hands available to take pictures of any animals you find out there.

I use a Black Diamond Revolt Headlamp . Unlike many other headlamps, this one is rechargeable. That means I don’t need to carry any spare batteries with me, and I also don’t produce much waste. Plus, the headtorch is very bright and gives off enough light in any situation. It’s perfect for when you travel to the jungle.

In the jungle, you will see many animals. They will often be far away, though, so if you’re expecting to take phone pictures of sloths and monkeys, you will likely be disappointed.

Therefore, if you’re interested in photography, consider investing in a camera with a good zoom. Daniel and I both love our Sony mirrorless cameras , but you can also find compact cameras with a good zoom if you don’t want to carry anything as large.

Make sure to pack your camera into a waterproof bag. I once lost a camera in the jungle in Malaysia, after a downpour soaked not just me but also my backpack.

#15 Spare batteries and power bank

As we mentioned above, you might not always have access to electricity. Therefore, it’s a good idea to bring spare batteries for your camera, plus a power bank to charge your phone.

You likely won’t need your phone much, as you might not have reception. But if you want to take a few landscape photos, you will be glad to have a power bank to recharge it.

We have a tiny power bank which we love because it fits into every pocket. If you’re going for longer, you can also consider taking a heavier but much more powerful one .

#16 First aid kit

When you go to the jungle, consider taking a first aid kit with any over the counter medications you sometimes use. Take a pain killer, something against diarrhoea and maybe something against nausea. If you know any drugs you have used before, then go for those. Otherwise, if you’re unsure, ask at your pharmacy or go to see a doctor for advice.

Also, remember to take any drugs that you need to take regularly! You won’t be able to buy them in the middle of the jungle, so pack them somewhere safe.

Before you leave on your jungle trip, double-check with a doctor at home if you need any vaccinations. If you’re visiting the jungle in Uganda, for example, you will have to show your yellow fever vaccination certificate when you enter the country.

Depending on where you come from, this certificate might also be necessary when visiting the Amazon river in South America. Plus, your doctor can give you advice if you need to pack any malaria medication or other drugs into your first aid kit.

If you’re American, you can also get a lot of information from the CDC . Most other countries around the world also have websites where you can look up recommended travel vaccines, so this is a good starting point when preparing for your doctor’s appointment.

#17 Water bottle

In most jungle lodges, you can refill your water bottle whenever you need. To avoid plastic waste in the middle of the jungle, make sure to bring a water bottle!

Any bottle will do, but I love my Platypus bottle . It comes in different sizes, but as you’ll get sweaty in the jungle, we recommend taking one of 2 litres. Once you start drinking, the Platypus bottle starts collapsing. Therefore, it never takes more space than it needs to.

This also makes it the perfect bottle to bring for jungle trekking, as it gets easier to carry the more you drink.

#18 Day pack

You can pack your regular luggage into a duffle bag, a large backpack or even a suitcase.

For your excursions into the jungle, take a small backpack as a daypack. Make sure it’s comfortable and don’t pack too much, so it doesn’t get too heavy as you trek through the jungle. Daniel and I both have an Osprey Talon 22 backpack, which we love.

#19 Rain cover for your day pack

We have mentioned rainy weather a few times before in this article. You’re in the lush jungle, therefore, you’ll likely experience a rain shower or two.

To protect your electronics, make sure to take dry bags, in which you can store them, or a rain cover for your day pack. They come in all colours and sizes, and you might even get one specifically for your backpack model. Test it before your trip, so you know how to put it on when you need it.

#20 Books or card games

Most animals are active in the early morning or the late evening. We got up early, went out for wildlife watching, came back for breakfast and then had lots of time to ourselves. During your jungle tour, you will likely experience a similar schedule.

During the heat of the day, it is best to relax in a hammock and do nothing. I recommend bringing a good book or two for those hours of downtime.

I carry a Kindle for my travels, and I spent many hours lying in a hammock, reading. The Kiwi boys who were in the lodge with us liked to play cards. Whatever you do, take something to keep you occupied.

If you follow this jungle travel packing list, you should have all the essentials you need for your trip. You might find one or two items not on the list that you love to take (a hat, for example – I usually can’t be bothered with carrying one), so just add those. It used to be that posting cool travel pictures on Instagram was enough. People would enjoy the content, like and comment, and sometimes… even share.

That is (usually) no longer the case.

Great travel Instagram captions alongside great photos and videos are now a must-have.

However, not just any Instagram caption will cut it. You need the right “Nomadic Narratives” to take your content to the next level.

Here are the best tips and tricks for creating these types of narratives.

Using Emojis Effectively

Nomadic Narratives rely on emojis to bring out the emotions.

Emojis can transform multiple words and phrases and boil them down to a single symbol. This symbol represents your best feelings as you explore new countries and touch down in different destinations.

However, a word of warning.

Do not go overboard with emojis. Too many and you’ll lose people. If your viewers need to take time to figure out what you’re saying, chances are you’ve gone overboard.

The right dosage of emojis is the first key to building Nomadic Narratives.

Leveraging Trending Topics

Nomadic Narratives are all about trending topics. These topics grab people’s interest and, most importantly, cause them to stop scrolling their Instagram feeds.

The question then becomes, “what does a trending topic look like?”

The short answer is that it’s a popular topic that’s talked about by a large group of people.

This could be a new destination opening up, the start of the summer travel season, or even a specific food that locals have just discovered.

What’s important is that you find a way to combine your images and videos with the trending topic in your caption.

After all, you want your Nomadic Narratives to be relevant to your content.

Here’s a quick example.

Let’s take the “start of summer” as a trending topic. If you’re posting a picture of yourself at the beach, you could have a caption that says:

Kicking off summer with some sun, sand and sea! 🌴 #NomadicNarratives #SummerStartsNow

The best way to stay on top of this is to watch out for current events and then use them as inspiration.

Incorporating Storytelling Elements

The ‘narrative’ part in Nomadic Narratives isn’t there by accident.

People use stories to share their experiences with others. Traveling is no different.

Your Instagram followers want to know the juicy details about your trip:

• Did the trip go according to plan?
• What were any unexpected incidents?
• How did you deal with them?
• What did you learn from them?
• How will you plan better next time?

Addressing the above questions in the form of a story is critical. This applies to any type of content you create online. Nomadic Narratives are no different.

You can also consider the 5W’s and 1H or narrative. The 5Ws are Who, What, Where, When, and Why. The 1H is How.

Using as many of these elements means you’ll make your content more engaging and relatable for your audience.

Tailoring Your Nomadic Narratives To Fit Your Audience

Finally, consider that your Nomadic Narratives are specific to your audience. There’s no point in having specialized captions that your audience can’t relate to.

Here’s an example scenario:

• you’re a travel agent
• catering to middle-aged people
• your audience wants to book a once-in-a-lifetime cruise around the Mediterranean.

Quite a specific target audience.

In this case, you can’t have Nomadic Narratives that say: “Hey, budget travelers, get ready for your backpacking adventure!”

This would not resonate with your audience (at all).

Instead, you want to have narratives like:

“Indulge in luxury travel with our exclusive cruise packages. Experience the world like never before with our top-notch amenities and personalized service.”

This shows you understand your audience’s wants and needs and can satisfy them.

This concept also applies to personal Instagram accounts. If you’re a 20-year-old traveling solo for the first time (and your audience resonates with this), don’t use captions that don’t align with your target audience.

A great caption might be:

Exploring the world one destination at a time on a shoestring budget! #travelonabudget

On the other hand, a bad one might be:

Jet-setting around the world in first class, living my best life. #blessed

There’s an obvious disconnect in the second example.

Writing travel Instagram captions to capture people’s emotions is a must.

Done right (in this world of endless scrolling), your captions take your followers on an amazing journey.

Combining captions from the right travel category above and using the Nomadic Narrative tips I gave you, you’ll be able to write compelling captions that leave your audience wanting more.

10 Instagram Filters Every Traveller Should Know and Love

It’s time to step up your insta-game. knowing which filter to use, and what effect it will create, will go a long way to improving your travel photos..

Instagram is massive. Its community has grown to more than 400m globally . Of course, Instagrammers not only hail from all over the world—they travel it, too. That means there’s a bigger audience than ever to show off your insta-game.

With 27 filters and endless options, it's difficult to know how best to edit your pictures for the broadest appeal. But with this many potential eyeballs on your photos, it’s time to step it up. Knowing which filter to use, and what effect it will create, will go a long way to improving your travel 'grams. In fact, according to Georgia Tech researchers , filtered photos are 21% more likely to be seen and 45% more likely to receive comments.

So, here are a few of our tips, showing what filters are best used in a selection of typical travel scenarios—from the streets of Europe to the African savannah. We’ve also provided a few sample images plucked from the G Adventures Instagram feed to show you exactly what effect these filters have—and the best places to use them.

1. For a European City

Here at G Adventures, we feel Hudson's the perfect filter for city streets, particularly effective when taking photos of limestone buildings and monuments. The slight tint will 'cool' off the image and give a bit of a 'colder' look with a 'dodged' centre. As useful in London and Paris as it is in Lisbon and Barcelona.

2. For a Safari

Sierra's the perfect Instagram filter for fading back the Serengeti and making the African landscape appear softer—allowing for your 'subjects' to really pop (be it lion, elephant or any of Africa's 'Big 5'). Used on a landscape by itself, it'll make shots appear calm and soothing, giving them a faded, softer look.

3. For Portraits

Inspired by outdoor adventures, the Juno filter tints cool tones green while making warm tones pop and whites glow for vibrant photos of people.

4. For the Rainforest

Instagram's Sutro will 'smoke' your image—with particularly emphasis on purple and brown highlights to achieve its effect. This filter burns photo edges and will make your rainforest shots a little more 'dramatic', providing provide a break from all the 'greens'.

5. For Landscapes

Lark—one of Instagram’s newer filters—desaturates reds while punching up blues and greens to bring your landscapes to life. Use this filter to transform a typical landscape shot into a more intense image that draws in the viewer.

6. For Sunsets and Beaches

Toaster will burn out the centre of your image, 'aging' it a bit. It's all-round perfect for 'warm' shots, sunsets, beaches, et al.

7. For Cruising

On a boat? Brannan's your buddy! This filter will give you a 'greyish' tint that darkens images—perfect for making your 'surf' a little more 'metallic' (read dramatic). It's ideal to reduce the glare of breaking surf—and when your image has strong shadows.

8. For Classic Moments

There’s no denying the that the ‘vintage’ look easily hides imperfections and imparts a classic feel. One of three filters introduced in 2015, Reyes brings a dusty, vintage look to your moments.

9. For Mountains

Hefe will make hills, valleys and peaks much more bold and colourful because it ups the contrast and intensifies colours (perfect when flora and fauna is as prominent as rock and stone). This filter's all about hight contrast and saturation, with a similar effect to Instagram's 'Lo-Fi' but not quite as dramatic.

10. For the End of the Earth

Inkwell's cool at the end of the world! Because there’s no complex shades to distract one’s eye, this filter increases contrast naturally. Its monotones work together to create a subtle dramatic look perfect for the polar regions—like Antarctica.

I spent 12 days seeking Costa Rica's highlights, from the Cloud Forest to the Nicoya Peninsula. I'd revisit 3 places in a heartbeat but one tourist trap I'll never fall into again.

• My partner and I spent nearly two weeks in Costa Rica for our birthdays this year.
• We tried to see the highlights of the country as we visited Arenal, Monteverde, and Paquera.
• Here are 3 activities I'd do again in a heartbeat, and 1 tourist trap I'd skip if we visited again.

My partner and I decided to splurge on a vacation to Costa Rica for a milestone birthday celebration this year. We spent 12 nights traveling across the western side of the country, trying to soak up as many of the Central American country's highlights as possible.

Costa Rica boasts 5% of the world's biodiversity , with white sand beaches and lush jungles to explore — a huge draw for us as animal lovers. It's also home to a small Blue Zone on the Nicoya Peninsula , where the region's residents are said to live longer, healthier lives than average.

Ultimately, we spent time in Costa Rica's capital city of San Jose, the volcanic hot springs of La Fortuna in Arenal, the cloud forest of Monteverde in Santa Elena, and the beaches of Paquera and Montezuma in the Nicoya region for a taste of the coastal life. While there were moments when we felt our experience was a bit too polished and gimmicky, the trip as a whole was full of incredible wildlife encounters and stunning views I haven't seen anywhere else in the world.

I'd hop on a plane tomorrow to go back if I could, but there are some things I'd skip on a return trip.

Rafting Rio Celeste in Arenal

Our first main stop was La Fortuna, in the shadow of Volcano Arenal — one of Costa Rica's active volcanoes. While this area has plenty of hanging bridge tours and night walks to spot wildlife like sloths and glass frogs, rafting down the Rio Celeste allowed us to see the jungle from a different perspective.

We traveled at the end of May, the start of Costa Rica's wet season, so we encountered fewer tourists than were usually present during our trip. This paid off especially well for our rafting excursion, where we were the only two people on the tour besides our guide.

For about two hours and $75 each, we navigated class II and III rapids — intermediate difficulty, with white caps up to three feet and some obstacles in the way — on the Rio Celeste, taking brief breaks to swim in the beautiful, clear water. We also took drone footage of curious howler monkeys who watched us from the shore.

Our guide pointed out local birds and fish, helping us stop our raft when there were sights we wanted to linger on. Once we were done on the water, we enjoyed fresh fruits and a hot lunch of empanadas, which was included in the tour's cost.

Hiking El Tigre Waterfalls in Monteverde

Hiking in the cloud forest of Monteverde quickly topped our list of things to do while we researched our trip. If I could have extended our stay longer, this is the one thing I'd want to do more of, mostly to see more of the incredible wildlife in the Puntarenas province.

High in the mountains, about 30 minutes from the artsy township of Santa Elena, we went on a self-guided hike to see the El Tigre Waterfalls. The 8-kilometer hike takes you through a humid jungle over several hanging bridges and offers stunning views of nearly a dozen waterfalls — but the animals were the highlight.

We saw massive butterflies, multiple species of hummingbirds and frogs, a toucan, motmots, a concerningly large snake , and glimpses of monkeys in the branches above.

Even in the cooler month of May, it was wildly hot in the jungle, so while the trekking wasn't physically challenging, we opted to catch a 4x4 up the mountain on the last leg of the trail — adding $20 to our $46 entry fee. For a little more than three hours of hiking, it was still a less expensive way to spend the afternoon than other tour options, and it once again felt like we had the trails to ourselves, only crossing paths with a few other groups the entire time we explored.

Bioluminescent kayak tours in Paquera

There are only a handful of places in the world where you can spot bioluminescent algae conditions year-round, and the coastal waters of the Nicoya Peninsula are one of them.

This tour was magical, even in less-than-ideal conditions for the glowing to appear. We shared a kayak and paddled out into the darkness with an enthusiastic guide who explained the chemistry behind bioluminescence and helped us find secluded coves to see the light produced by algae in the water.

The algae likes warm, still waters that get lots of light during the day. When it is charged with enough energy from the sun, it glows bright blue. In less-than-ideal conditions, it can appear greenish or white.

Our algae, which hadn't totally "charged," glowed an eerie white as our paddles broke the water's surface. It couldn't be captured on camera — but that's all the better, according to our guide, who encouraged us to be present in the moment, stepping out of our kayaks in a shallow cove to catch the algae in our shirts and watch it glow against the fabric and our skin.

At $36 each, perhaps we could have explored the coastline ourselves with a rented kayak, but the unique experience left us both feeling like it was one of the best parts of the trip.

Are coffee and chocolate walks worth it?

Costa Rica is known for its coffee and chocolate, so it's nearly impossible to drive through any main stretch of road without seeing signs for tours showing how the products are grown and cultivated.

They're not worth it. Any questions you have about the process can be answered at the gift shop where the tours end, and you're likely to get a free sample regardless of whether you paid for a 2+ hour tour.

We chose to take a night walk that included a coffee and chocolate tour. Our guide (for $60 each) walked us around the grounds of the coffee grove, explained how chocolate was made from cacao beans, and then sent us out with flashlights to look for wildlife in the dark.

While we bought chocolate for our friends and family as souvenirs, we didn't glimpse any exciting animals or glean any particularly interesting knowledge from our guide, so the tour stood out as a pricey decision we could have skipped without losing out on anything.

Overall, our Costa Rican adventure was beautiful, full of incredible sights, exciting excursions, and delicious meals I won't soon forget. If you're planning a trip , skip the highly curated outings to explore the country's less popular attractions — and be quick with your camera; the jungle won't wait.

Diplo’s Jamaica

The Grammy-winning D.J. and music producer recommends spots in a city he loves on Jamaica’s northeast coast. A dance party makes the cut.

Diplo, born Thomas Wesley Pentz, fell in love with Jamaica, particularly its Portland parish on the northeast coast, nearly 20 years ago. “I was D.J.ing on a cruise ship, got off in Ocho Rios, and drove through Port Antonio to get to Kingston,” said the multiple-Grammy nominee and winner who has collaborated with Dua Lipa, Sturgill Simpson, Snoop Dogg, Shakira, Bad Bunny and countless other musicians. “Portland is sort of like Costa Rica, all jungly and waterfalls. And Port Antonio is this quaint little town where I’d go on a sort of retreat, “Mr. Pentz added. About eight years ago he bought some farmland and built a house there.

Mr. Pentz thinks Port Antonio is a calmer option than Ocho Rios or other popular tourist spots on Jamaica for people who enjoy nature, hiking, waterfalls and, of course, beaches. It’s also for those who seek a more authentic experience. “It’s the sort of city where you’re mixing with the locals, and I think that’s what special about it,” he said.

Born in Mississippi and raised in Florida, Mr. Pentz has traveled extensively and D.J.ed on every continent, including Antarctica. A livestream of his D.J. set there, which took place on the helipad of Atlas Ocean Voyages’ World Voyager, was posted on YouTube in January.

Recently, Mr. Pentz has become a runner. He ran the Los Angeles marathon and competed in the Malibu Triathlon, but found that something was missing from the experience: a post-run celebration. So, he launched Diplo’s Run Club , a series of 5K runs — the inaugural events take place this fall in Seattle and San Francisco — culminating in afterparties, with D.J. sets from Diplo and friends, at the finish line. When he’s not running or traveling for work, he spends time at his home in Jamaica.

Here are five of his favorite places in and around Port Antonio.

1. Geejam Hotel

When Mr. Pentz first started coming to Port Antonio, he would often hang out and work on music at Geejam , a boutique hotel set on six acres of tropical rainforest at the edge of the Caribbean. “It was built as a sort of studio for Kingston artists and singers,” he said, and it continues to attract artists and Hollywood types, as well as Jamaicans from other parishes who check in for staycations. “You’ll sometimes see someone like Shawn Mendes or other artists who might be recording in the studio,” he said. The hotel, which has access to Frenchman’s Cove, a white sand beach, has large villas, cozy cabins tucked into the jungle and a main building with a dozen rooms. “It feels world class but has a backpacker vibe at the same time. There’s even a mushroom dispensary in the lobby,” he added, pointing out that psychedelics are not illegal on the island.

2. Rafting on the Rio Grande

On Jamaica’s longest river, the Rio Grande, bamboo rafts were once used to transport bananas from the interior of Portland to the coast for export. These days, locals and tourists alike book a rafting adventure for a leisurely way to soak in the beauty of the island’s flora and fauna. “The water’s not very deep, maybe waist high, and you can get out anywhere you want and swim a little,” said Mr. Pentz. “What I love about it is that halfway through the ride you stop at this beach and there’s an amazing restaurant, Belinda’s, where you can get all these local dishes and a Red Stripe for lunch, and just hang out. Then you get back on the raft and keep going.”

3. Vinyl Sundays at Natural Mystic Bar & Lounge

Natural Mystic Bar & Lounge is in a neighborhood of Port Antonio called Drapers. “One night a week this Italian guy and his wife and friends play records,” said Mr. Pentz, referring to the organizer Enrico Vicari. “They bring out their old 45s and their big speakers and it’s like a dance off, a big party in the street.” Mr. Pentz often stops by to D.J. when he’s in town. “A lot of expats live in Portland and on Sundays there’s a nice mix of local families, Rastas and European tourists who go there to dance and listen to old school reggae music. It goes from sunset until around two in the morning.”

4. Piggy’s Jerk Centre

“You can’t eat anything more quintessentially Jamaican than jerk chicken — and Piggy’s has the best in Port Antonio,” said Mr. Pentz. Even the most recent 007 himself, the actor Daniel Craig, would probably agree. During the filming of “No Time to Die,” the cast and crew would often hang out at this tiny eatery in Market Square in the center of Port Antonio. When the original restaurant burned in a fire, Mr. Craig and his pals raised funds to help rebuild it. “It’s a great place to eat some delicious food and hang out with the locals,” said Mr. Pentz. “I make sure to stop by at least once every time I’m in town.”

5. Boston Bay

Considered the birthplace of spicy jerk seasoning, Boston Bay is a town with a skate park and pretty bay that is home to one of the only surf spots in Jamaica. It’s also home to Boston Jerk Center, a collection of open-air food stalls that specialize in jerk cooking. “There’s maybe eight different restaurants and some serve the best jerk pork or jerk chicken, some have jerk vegetables,” said Mr. Pentz, who recommends getting your food to go and finding a spot at Boston Beach to watch the surfers. “You can rent a board and take a lesson. When I’m in town, this is where I surf.”
