Stone in Love means 'totally' or 'completely' in love. Similar to saying 'stone broke' when someone is absolutely penniless or 'stone sober' for someone completely sober.

Man, I have the Escape album on Super Audio CD and you don't know what you are missing until you hear it opposed to normal, Ross Valory is amazing in this song, the soundstage is so "visible" and present in this album. The re-mastering is amazing. Anyway, this song is my favorite off this album, it's such a feel good song. The words seem pretty obvious, like most Journey songs, they're about Steve Perry's (or whoever) crazy love and passion for someone. I just like how vivd his descriptions are, and the solo/breakdown gives me goosebumps. This is a great song, and if you have a SACD player, buy this album now. The vocals are so clean the hair will stand up on your arms at high levels.

@l @erall_us IDK if we are talking about the same thing but, I remember riding around in my aunt’s Brand New Camaro (none of that ‘spoiler’ shit on the back either, ruining the car’s beautiful lines), blasting Journey and other stuff that was big at the time, and I remember thinking, “This sounds unlike anything I’ve heard”, and “this must be what they mean by ‘State Of The Art’ “, cuz that’s exactly what that awesome sound seemed like to my pre-teen self lol…it sounded like “The Future” or at least, like the then-Present. <br /> <br /> Hipsters like to talk like groups like Journey and Foreigner et al are and were always hopelessly outdated, like, “corporate rock”, or “yacht rock”, but those people are sheep. If it hits you in the gut, it’s fucking GOOD, period, don’t get all caught up in thinking like critics decide what’s “good”…they may help to decide what’s “cool”, but they don’t know any more about “good music” than you or I do… but then, nobody will ever admit to following, say, Lester Bangs’ record reviews as Gospel, and if they ain’t got enough courage To admit it the truth to themselves, they/it ain’t worth considering…

stone in love, stones are heavy, they fall hard and fast.

A metaphor for "love"? :)

Great song... when I heard the intro at monsters of rock this year I literally crumbled in excitement... lyrics are amazing and the feeling of reminisence makes me want to cry...

This is one of my favorite songs ever!! Some of the lines represent some things in my life. For example, my "golden girl" is a girl that I've had a crush on for the longest time. And the "old dusty road" is a little road that connects my street to hers.

The "Golden Girl" reference has special meaning to me as my girl in 1980 was a blonde water polo player from California...Sigh. More fuel for Mid-Life crises......

this is a kickass song!!why are there hardly any comments on it!!?? Anyway, this song is about good times as a teenager and young love and all that good shit!!

the chorus to this song is just so amazing. steve perry has a beautiful voice.

This song is about people who like to eat granola and wear tie dye and have long hair...and the love that they share.

"Stoner Love"

Journey is an American rock band formed in 1973 in San Francisco by former members of Santana and Frumious Bandersnatch. The band has gone through several phases; its strongest commercial success occurred between 1978 and 1987, after which it temporarily disbanded. During that period, the band released a series of hit songs, including 1981's "Don't Stop Believin'", which became in 2009 the top-selling catalog track in iTunes history. Its parent studio album, Escape, the band's eighth and most successful, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and yielded another of their most popular singles, "Open Arms". Its 1983 follow-up, Frontiers, was almost as successful in the United States, reaching No. 2 and spawning several successful singles; it broadened the band's ap… more »

Journey – “Stone In Love” Lyrics Meaning

Photo of author

Joanna holds a BSc in English Literature and uses her expertise in literary analysis to uncover the deeper meaning of her favorite songs.

This song is wrapped in summer nights’ warmth and the unforgettable thrill of young love. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a carefree youth, where the narrator reminisces about the “best times” of his life. This is embodied in the “blue jean girl,” a symbol of that unforgettable, burning love that comes once in a lifetime. The songwriter channels these memories to evoke a sense of longing and appreciation for the past. It’s a universal theme that connects with anyone who has experienced the bittersweet nature of growing up and holding onto precious memories.

Ever wondered why some songs feel like they were written just for you? “Stone In Love” might be one of those tracks. Take a journey with me as we explore the memories and emotions wrapped in this iconic song.

“Stone In Love” Lyrics Meaning

“Stone In Love” opens with a burst of nostalgia: “Those crazy nights, I do remember in my youth.” This line sets the stage, immediately connecting listeners to their own memories of youth and freedom. The song is a time capsule, capturing the essence of youthful exuberance and the carelessness that comes with it.

The phrase “in the heat with a blue jean girl” not only conjures an image of a summer romance but also symbolizes a specific moment in time, a snapshot of youth. The “blue jean girl” represents a universal figure of young love and passion, a memory that the narrator holds dear. The recurring theme of “burnin’ love” suggests an intense, unforgettable connection, emphasizing that such experiences are rare and cherished.

The chorus, “Those summer nights are callin’, Stone in love,” brings a sense of longing. It’s not just a reflection on past love but also a yearning for the freedom and simplicity of those days. The term “Stone in love” implies a deep, unshakeable love, something that remains strong over time.

The lyrics also touch on the fleeting nature of these experiences. “Oh the memories never fade away, Golden girl, I’ll keep you forever,” indicates a desire to hold onto these moments. This line captures the essence of nostalgia, the wish to freeze a moment in time that has long passed.

The song’s bridge, “Old dusty roads, led to the river, Runnin’ slow,” adds a layer of tranquility and peace, perhaps suggesting a quieter, more reflective moment within this whirlwind of emotion.

In its entirety, “Stone In Love” is a tribute to the times that shape us, the experiences that define our youth, and the people who leave an indelible mark on our hearts.

The Story Behind “Stone In Love”

The early 1980s, when “Escape” was released, was a time of significant change and evolution in music and culture. Journey, already established as a successful band, was exploring themes that resonated deeply with their audience. The songwriter, likely influenced by personal experiences and the collective yearning of a generation looking back on their youth, crafted “Stone In Love” as a reflection of these sentiments.

The song’s lyrical content suggests a personal connection with the past. It’s as if the songwriter is reaching back through time to relive those moments, to feel once again the intensity and freedom of youth. This personal touch adds authenticity to the song, making it more relatable and heartfelt.

“Stone In Love” is not just a song about a summer love; it’s a narrative about holding onto those fleeting moments that define us. It speaks to the bittersweet nature of growing up and the realization that while we can’t return to those days, we carry them with us forever in our memories. The songwriter’s state of mind reflects this duality of longing and appreciation, a sentiment that has helped the song endure as a classic.

Why Fans Think Taylor Swift's ‘When Emma Falls in Love’ Lyrics Are About Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield

preview for Emma Stone’s Greatest Fashion Moments

What's even more mind-blowing? Swift appeared to write a song about Stone during her Speak Now era. The song, a new “From the Vault” track on Swift's Speak Now (Taylor's Version) has Stone's name in the title, “When Emma Falls in Love,” and seems to be a tribute to their friendship and how much Swift admires Stone.

Swift and Stone became friends in 2008:

emma stone and taylor swift at hollywood life magazine's 10th annual young hollywood awards

Emma Stone fans on Twitter immediately speculated that the song could be referencing when Stone met Andrew Garfield. The dated for three years publicly until their relationship ending for good in October 2015.

The timeline may be a stretch, given Stone and Garfield weren't reported to be dating until 2011. But they did meet in 2010, before Speak Now 's original release, and some of the language in the lyrics echo what Garfield said about meeting Stone. (Other Swift fans theorized the song may have been about Stone's boyfriend before Garfield, Kieran Culkin, whom she dated in 2010. The pair kept their relationship private and were reported to have split in 2011.)

Here's the exact sequence of events known publicly:

News of Stone's casting in The Amazing Spider-Man with Garfield broke during the first week of October 2010; Speak Now came out October 25, 2010.

Garfield spoke about being drawn to Stone during their screen test. News of Garfield's casting as Peter Parker came out on July 2, 2010, meaning that Stone and Garfield's joint audition likely happened that summer.

“It was like I woke up when she came in,” he told Teen Vogue in a 2012 interview with Stone. “She was the last person to screen-test, and I was so bored of it by then that I was mucking about—I'd been pretending I was Tom Hanks or Seth Rogen. And then she came in, and it was like diving into white-water rapids and having no desire to hang on to the side. Throughout shooting, it was wild and exciting. I couldn't help but try to stay with her, keep pace with her, and not let her get away,” he said with a laugh. “Like an animal preying on a smaller animal, but a wily smaller animal.”

Stone laughed and told him, “Shhh. That is enough .”

Reports of them dating didn't break until almost a year later in June 2011. People noted that they started shooting The Amazing Spider-Man together in December 2010, after Swift's album dropped. Still, what happened between Garfield and Stone privately after their screen test isn't known—likewise with her and Kieran Culkin. There is a slim chance that Garfield's connection with Stone could have served as inspiration for the track. What's less debatable is that Stone herself inspired Swift.

Here are the lyrics, via Genius :

Verse 1 When Emma falls in love, she paces the floor Closes the blinds and locks the door When Emma falls in love, she calls up her mom

Stone is very close to her mother. In her 2012 Teen Vogue interview with Garfield, she called her mother her hero. “My mom [is my hero], for so many reasons—for her bravery. For everything. ”

Jokes about the ways that this one could go wrong She waits and takes her time 'Cause Little Miss Sunshine always thinks it's gonna rain

Garfield famously described his first meeting with Stone as encountering sunshine. “She came in, and she was like a shot of espresso,” Garfield said, recalling their screen test in a 2012 feature on it. “She's like being bathed in sunlight. She's incredibly energetic and enthusiastic, and she had this sense of play and fun, which was incredibly exciting.”

When Emma falls in love, I know That boy will never be the same Chorus 'Cause she's the kind of book that you can't put down

Garfield literally spoke about feeling he could write a book about Stone, although it was in a 2014 interview, long after Swift's song was written. Still, it's a testament to what anyone can see in Stone's character and more evidence the song is likely about her. “I will write a book one day about how I feel about every aspect of Emily Stone [Emma's real name],” Garfield said on Good Morning America, via Just Jared Jr . “She’s a full genius, or she has found her genius and she’s doing it so beautifully. I think everyone who works with her, everyone who brushes shoulders with her or even makes eye contact with her gets a shot of sunshine.”

Like if Cleopatra grew up in a small town And all the bad boys would be good boys If they only had a chance to love her And to tell you the truth, sometimes I wish I was her Verse 2 When Emma falls in love, it's all on her face Hangs in the air like stars in outer space When Emma falls in love, she disappears And we all just laugh after seein' it all these years When Emma falls apart, it's when she's alone She takes on the pain and bears it on her own 'Cause when Emma falls in love, she's in it for keeps She won't walk away unless she knows she absolutely has to leave Chorus And she's the kind of book that you can't put down Like if Cleopatra grew up in a small town And all the bad boys would be good boys If they only had a chance to love her And to tell you the truth, sometimes I wish I was her Bridge Well, she's so New York when she's in L.A.

Stone now has homes in New York City and Los Angeles, but as Entertainment Weekly reported, she was living in Los Angeles at the time the song was written but was photographed out with Swift in New York City.

She won't lose herself in love the way that I did 'Cause she'll call you out, she'll put you in your place When Emma falls in love, I'm learning

In April 2010, Stone spoke to MTV News about the history of her and Swift's friendship and how their personalities meshed. The interview gives a telling look at their dynamic during the Speak Now era. “She's so great! We're very different, but she has such a sick sense of humor,” Stone said. “Nobody knows that. She's so great. People know ... how hilarious she is. They've seen her on SNL. People are seeing it more now, and she's so funny and she's exactly who you think she is, and I love that.”

She added of their first meeting: “We met at the Young Hollywood Awards for Hollywood Life magazine. We met there three years ago, and then I listened to some of her music, and I wrote her an e-mail saying I liked her music, I swear. And then we started talking and hanging out.”

Verse 3 Emma met a boy with eyes like a man Turns out her heart fits right in the palm of his hand Now he'll be her shelter when it rains Little does he know, his whole world's about to change It's unclear who this is about, but it could fit either Garfield or Culkin. Stone kept her relationship with Culkin private. But she did speak about Garfield being a huge factor in her taking the Spider-Man role in her 2012 Teen Vogue . She alluded to how Garfield stood out to her professionally; she playfully called him out for being “intense” and called him the “biggest thinker,” complimenting his emotional maturity.
“Something was telling me that I needed to be her [Gwen Stacy],” she started. “And then I tested with him, and that sealed the deal. Because meeting Andrew, and working with Andrew—cover your ears, Andrew, earmuffs—it was one of the greatest experiences I've ever had. Really, the way he is as an actor is just completely different from anyone I've ever worked with. I never went to school for this, so getting to be a sponge off certain people is very vital to me.” Chorus 'Cause she's the kind of book that you can't put down Like if Cleopatra grew up in a small town And all the bad boys would be good boys If they only had a chance to love her And to tell you the truth, sometimes I wish I was her Outro Yeah, between me and you, sometimes I wish I was her

It was the song that fans took as being coded with details of their feud, and now Kim Kardashian has responded to Taylor Swift’s ‘thanK you aIMee’ from The Tortured Poets Department . The song appears on Swift’s 11th album, which was released on April 19, 2024.

Another source concurred with the feelings. “Kim isn’t happy about it but doesn’t want to add fuel to the fire,” a source told Us Weekly. The Kardashians star is “upset that Taylor is still harboring negative feelings toward her. She thought that their issues were in the past.”

While Kardashian “had no idea she was going to be a part of this narrative,” the insider says she “did think this could happen at some point knowing how Taylor writes her music.”

In her first interview after the release of The Tortured Poets Department , Kim Kardashian told Jimmy Kimmel on Jimmy Kimmel Live! “Life is good.” Jimmy Kimmel didn’t ask Kim about the album despite him mentioning Taylro in his opening monologue. However, they did share this one interesting fact: “You sleep with your eyes slightly open?” Kimmel asked. “I do!” Kim affirmed. “There’s footage because my sisters have taken videos and pictures.”

In the comments section, the post was flooded with thousands of variations of “thank you aimee”, referencing the song off Swift’s album, which owing to the choice in capital letters spells out K-I-M. It seems comments were temporarily disabled, but have been reactivated.

Kim Kardashian responds to Taylor Swift's 'thank you aimee'

The feud between the “All Too Well” singer and  The Kardashians  star was  reportedly instigated  after Kim released a snippet of a conversation on Snapchat in 2016 between Taylor and her then-husband  Kanye West  where he shared a line of his song “Famous” to the referred to “Bad Blood” musician.“

Kim  spoke about the feud  on social media in 2020. “@taylorswift13 has chosen to reignite an old exchange – that at this point in time feels very self-serving given the suffering millions of real victims are facing right now,” Kim tweeted. “I didn’t feel the need to comment a few days ago, and I’m actually really embarrassed and mortified to be doing it right now, but because she continues to speak on it, I feel I’m left without a choice but to respond because she is actually lying.” Kim later filed for divorce against Kanye in 2021.

Taylor Swift’s “thanK you aIMee” lyrics

[Verse 1] When I picture my hometown There’s a bronze spray-tanned statue of you And a plaque underneath it That threatens to push me down the stairs, at our school

[Pre-Chorus] And it was always the same searing pain But I dreamed that one day, I could say

[Verse 2] And it wasn’t a fair fight, or a clean kill Each time that Aimee stomped across my gravе And then she wrote hеadlines In the local paper, laughing at each baby step I’d take

[Pre-Chorus] And it was always the same searing pain But I prayed that one day, I could say

[Chorus] All that time you were throwin’ punches, I was buildin’ somethin’ And I couldn’t wait to show you it was real Screamed “Fuck you, Aimee” to the night sky, as the blood was gushin’ But I can’t forget the way you made me heal

[Post-Chorus] Everyone knows that my mother is a saintly woman But she used to say she wished that you were dead I pushed each boulder up the hill Your words are still just ringing in my head, ringing in my head

[Verse 3] I wrote a thousand songs that you find uncool I built a legacy which you can’t undo But when I count the scars, there’s a moment of truth That there wouldn’t be this, if there hadn’t been you

[Chorus] All that time you were throwin’ punches, it was all for nothin’ And our town, it looks so small, from way up here Screamed “Thank you, Aimee” to the night sky, and the stars are stunnin’ ‘Cause I can’t forget the way you made me heal

[Post-Chorus] Everyone knows that my mother is a saintly woman But she used to say she wished that you were dead So I pushed each boulder up that hill Your words were still just ringin’ in my head, ringin’ in my head

[Outro] Thank you, Aimee Thank you, Aimee

Lawrence Rothman, Fluid in Genre and Gender, Is Reshaping the Americana Sound

By Josh Crutchmer

Josh Crutchmer

Nashville may be the place Lawrence Rothman first cut their teeth as an artist, but it took the ongoing surge in Americana and emo country for them to fall in love with the city.

“I kind of sum up Nashville with all the music that’s happening adjacent to the Americana sound right now — and I’m including Zach Bryan — with the rawness of the songwriting, and the lyrics being first,” Rothman tells Rolling Stone .

“That’s an M.O. for me. Nashville had fallen off my radar until I came back here in 2020 and started getting turned on to a lot of these artists. I realized that this is what I’ve been missing. I’ve been searching for music that puts the lyrics first like this.”

Away from the microphone, Rothman holds a steadily growing influence on Americana. They have produced, co-written, or performed with Margo Price, Katie Pruitt, Amanda Shires, and Angel Olsen, among others. At the Basement show, Shires joined Rothman onstage for the opening song, “LAX,” to which Shires also contributed vocals on The Plow That Broke the Plains . Rothman called Shires “my best friend,” at the end of the song. “Yes! I have one!” Shires responded, before stepping off the stage and into the crowd for the rest of the set.

Rothman then launched into “Poster Child,” which they co-wrote with Jason Isbell about a 2004 incident in which Rothman was attacked outside of a Texas club following a performance.

Rothman has identified as gender-fluid most of their life and prefers to perform in makeup and flashy, punk-rock attire. In Texas in the early 2000s, such a show carried a certain amount of risk for artists.

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

“After the show, I was standing in an alley, and three guys jumped me and shot at me, and broke my ribs,” they continue. “It was pretty traumatic. You hear about these assaults happening, but it’s not until it happens to you that you really feel the pain that one goes through.”

“I sort of felt like I was back in my parents’ basement. I had a comfortable feeling, like we were two kids from Middle America, who were now grown up, writing together like we were back in that basement,” they say. ”It just made me want to go there with this song.”

Lawrence Rothman Wants to Lift Up Those Who 'Struggle With Gender Identity' on New Album

Halsey reveals new song out this week: 'let's start at the end', trump threatens public 'breaking point' if jailed. schiff says he's 'inciting violence'.

After coming up with “LAX” on the flight back to L.A., Rothman decided to add one more track to the album. “R Blood” is an overtly political number calling out “the American dream turned American horror” over a blend of country and R&B melodies. Rothman recruited S.G. Goodman to perform it as a duet for The Plow That Broke the Plains .

“I was reading an article about the storm we’re about to enter, with the election, and it got me thinking,” Rothman says. “I haven’t written a politically-driven song in years, but I came up with this. Then, I went over to Sunset Sound, and I cut it. I thought, ‘Man, if I’m going to do this, I want someone on it with me, who I love, and who has the same ethics as me.’ Well, that’s S.G.”

“I think, for a while, that Nashville was very comfortable in its process, and I think there was a laziness to it,” Rothman says. “Then, people like [producer] Dave Cobb and some of these other producers started opening up the door to where we didn’t have to be that comfortable. We could try other avenues. At the same time the Americana scene — the East Nashville scene — has gotten way more welcoming of diversity. That’s key to good music. If it’s all just the same type of person, you’re going to get the same type of sound.”

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift  transformed the renovated Santiago Bernabéu Stadium into a musical party on Wednesday (May 29), performing to a euphoric crowd of approximately 65,000 fans. It wasn’t only a night full of music and excitement but a triumphant return for Swift, who had not played in Madrid since 2011, with only about 4,000 people in attendance at the WiZink Center. Much has changed since then, and now Swift hangs the “sold out” sign at each of her concerts.

From the first moment she stepped on stage, Swift made it clear how special this night was for her. “It’s an honor to be able to say this so many years later,” she said in English before exclaiming in Spanish, “ Madrid, ¡bienvenidos al Eras Tour! ” Thus began a show of more than three hours where the audience sang non-stop, dancing and vibing with every note. The stadium’s energy was electrifying from the first chord to the last applause.

Swift opened her first of two dates in Madrid with an impressive 45-song set list, organized into 10 sections representing each of her musical eras: Lover , Fearless , Red , Speak Now , Reputation , Folklore/Evermore , 1989 , The Tortured Poets Department , and a surprise set of songs from 2022’s Midnights to close the night. Each era was a journey through time, remembering and celebrating the evolution of one of the world’s most beloved artists.

The singer was visibly moved by the audience’s support and did not miss the opportunity to refer to those 13 years of waiting, promising that “it will never be that long again” until she returns to Spain. With another show scheduled at the Bernabéu Stadium on May 30, Swift’s magic continues to ignite hearts in the Spanish capital. Here are our favorite moments from the special night.

Speaking in Spanish

The artist began the night by greeting the audience in Spanish, demonstrating her effort to connect with local fans. “ Buenas tardes, encantada de veros ,” Swift said after performing the first two tracks from the album Lover , translating to “Good afternoon, nice to see you all.” Throughout the night, she continued to use Spanish phrases, including, “ Madrid, bienvenidos a The Eras Tour ” (“Madrid, welcome to The Eras Tour”).

One of the most applauded moments occurred during the song “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”, when the singer surprised the audience by passing the microphone to one of the dancers, who completed the phrase with an emphatic “ ni de coña ,” which is local slang that roughly translates to “no way.”

Another exciting moment came when Swift performed songs from her 1989 era, wearing an outfit designed by Roberto Cavalli that made a clear nod to the flag of Spain. The star emerged with a red strapless top and a yellow skirt , leading the whole Bernabéu to cheer in approval at the top of their lungs.

Throughout The Eras Tour, Swift has been combining tops and skirts in different colors, from pink and green to yellow and blue at one of her concerts in Sweden. During the Folklore era in Madrid, she wore an Alberta Ferretti dress for the first time in blue, having previously worn it in green and in yellow.

Celebrities in Attendance

Among the thousands in attendance were multiple local and international celebrities, from singers Aitana and Manuel Carrasco (both soon to perform at the same stadium) to the Haim sisters, and Hollywood actors Blake Lively  and Ryan Reynolds with their children.

Aitana arrived at the concert a few minutes after Swift jumped on stage, being greeted with screams and applause from the audience. The “Alpha” singer, who will also fill the Bernabéu for two nights in December, expressed her excitement on Instagram: “Taylor, we LOVE YOU. This is being a dream. I can’t believe that in less than 7 months I’m going to be singing here. December 28 (sold out) and 29 (last tickets left).”

One of the most touching moments occurred before Swift performed “Betty,” when she smiled at Lively and Reynolds’ three children, mentioning that her favorite Folklore characters are James, Ines and Betty. The family enjoyed the concert with special poignancy, given that the children’s names inspired the song. These details underscored Swift’s ability to create an intimate and personal atmosphere in a stadium filled with thousands of people.

The Surprise Songs

Taylor Swift always takes advantage of the acoustic segment of each of her shows to perform unexpected songs, and Madrid was no exception. For her first night in the capital, she chose “Sparks Fly” and “I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)” to play on guitar, and “I Look in People’s Windows” and “Snow On The Beach” on piano. It was a special and intimate moment in which the audience sang every lyric along with her.

During the performance of “Snow On The Beach,” a trap door on stage opened, causing a surge of excitement among the audience. With her trademark sense of humor, Swift quickly interjected, “I’m sorry, but it’s not Lana [del Rey],” sparking laughter and applause from the audience.

A Sweet Gesture to a Fan

Among the most memorable moments of the night, Swift gave her hat to a young girl in the audience during the song “22.” The star approached her and spoke to her for a few seconds, as cheers from the audience filled the stadium. It’s not something she hasn’t done in the past, but still, the gesture was touching and surely unforgettable for the young fan.

The Marías Dive Deep on ‘Submarine’: ‘We Played Through’ Romantic Breakup Between Members, and Deluxe Album Reveal (EXCLUSIVE)

The Marías

In “Blur,” track six on the Marías ‘ new album “Submarine,” vocalist María Zardoya proclaims herself as an avoidant. Zardoya’s breathy voice sings about refusing to elaborate on any questions about the “mess” she’s made of her life, mainly because she can’t bare to recall the painful memories.

It’s a brave acknowledgment to make considering Zardoya, now sitting in her ex-boyfriend Josh Conway’s home studio, is openly discussing her life-altering breakup, what also happens to be the material for the Marías’ 14-song sophomore record and the follow-up to their critically acclaimed Grammy-nominated debut, “Cinema” (2021).

Related Stories

Pixar key to hdr cinema expansion, cristin milioti joins 'hit-monkey' season 2 at hulu (exclusive), popular on variety.

“The album’s material, from the songwriting to the details in the sound, is substantial,” Zardoya tells Variety . “I think with this level of honesty, obviously, came really awkward moments between us as a band. We had to learn to fight it and then embrace it, and ultimately, honesty is what’s best for the music and for the songs. We played through it and I’ll always look back it fondly because of that.”

The band spent four months apart between their last tour date and the the jam sessions that would eventually become “Submarine.” During that time, the future of the Marías was up in the air. Conway took a trip to Europe, in an “Eat, Pray, Love” kind of way, while Zardoya — who has written a majority of the Marías’ discography since the band started playing local shows in 2016 — expressed her grief on paper.

“There was no end goal,” Conway remembers. “We were just trying to see if we could still write and make music together. It wasn’t until we had finished all the songs on the album that we finally sat down and acknowledged that we could and we did create something we are all proud of.”

Once the band met up in person to play together again, “I remember I knew what I wanted to say,” Zardoya says, “but I hesitated to say it out loud because I was scared of how it would make Josh feel. There were a lot of those moments throughout this album that I was like ‘I know what I want to say, but I’m holding back.’ I was nervous to show the album to Ricky [Reed] and Brad [Haering], so I must’ve warned them a million times that the album wasn’t finished yet but they quickly were like ‘No, this is done. This is ready.'”

Breakup aside, “Submarine” sticks to its voyeuristic theme in its production and instrumental arrangements. Like most of the Marías’ records since their first two EPs, 2017’s “Superclean Vol. I” and 2018’s “Superclean Vol. II,” trumpets and strings accentuate the album’s more jazzy crescendos. The richest textures often come courtesy of undulating synths and Pearlman’s “secret guitar pedals” that can be delicate or rough, adding atmospheric reverb that mimics rippling water and similar sounds.

To create the album’s glistening art work (the band is even selling a vinyl “water cover” variant that has liquid inside the vinyl sleeve), the Marías spent hours uncomfortably submerged in a pool. “I was miserable,” Zardoya says. This was true not because Zardoya spent the most time underwater to capture the album’s cover art, but because her father (whose voice you hear at the end of “Ay No Puedo”) had suffered a stroke in the days before the shoot and she was emotionally shot.

“I got through the day and in the end, the visuals look beautiful,” she says, noting “that feeling is the foundation of the album: it was uncomfortable to make at times but we got through it and made something beautiful.”

“Hamptons”

There’s a bit of dancehall feel to this and a bit of a return to reggaeton. Before Maria, I didn’t know much about reggaeton, let alone producing it and I could make what we consider to be reggaeton, the things we hear on the radio but I feel like I would be stealing from people who really own that space like Tainy. So I find a way to make it ours, and I think this is the perfect example of doing that while still being the Marias. – Conway

“Echo”

The lyrics in “Echo” are painfully honest so it was one of the hardest ones to get through. Josh went to Europe shortly after “Echo” was written if that tells you anything. – Zardoya

“Echo” was also one of those songs that showed us pretty early on into the process that water would be a recurring theme. I’m pretty sure we had the bubbles you hear in the song already recorded before we even decided on “Submarine.” – Conway

“Real Life”

Josh is the best at bass lines. We were in Dominican Republic, and this song started as a full-band jam and lyrics came out, melody came out and Josh does what he does. When we write as a band its the easiest thing in the world, it’s very synergetic, I think. – Zardoya

It started with that one note, a C minor. I want to say María started singing and I was directing the band through note changes — “B-flat to G, back to beginning!” It came together the quickest. – Conway

“If Only”

We wrote this song as a tribute to Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan’s song, “Green Grass.” [Waits] has been a family friend of Josh’s and so we were able to send him the song before it came out and we asked him if he would be a co-writer. He technically didn’t write any of it but it was completely inspired by him and we’re honored he said yes. – Conway

“Sienna”

This is written from the standpoint of a broken relationship and of what could have been: We could have had a child together and named her Sienna, and she would have looked like you… Sienna would have acted like you, she would have jumped in the pool just like you, and she would have sang to all her pets like I do… she would have done all these things like us. But because we broke up, Sienna will never exist.

And so at the very end where I sing, “See her face in the forest, then it disappears,” it’s like seeing the future you wanted just completely vanish out of nowhere and that’s how this part of the album ends. – Zardoya

The Power of Music: ‘We Call It Imagineering’ Episode 2 Debuts

Jason Recher

by Jason Recher , Vice President Content & Digital Integration

The second episode of our Walt Disney Imagineering YouTube series is now available to watch, and this time we’re taking you with us behind-the-scenes of how music is created for Disney attractions and entertainment including a first look at the finale of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure , featuring the new original song “Special Spice.” But that’s not the only new music you’ll soon be tapping your toes to, because we’ve also got a sneak peek at new music for Country Bear Musical Jamboree !

Walt Disney understood the power of music and what it could convey. Music transcends language barriers, making it a universal medium that resonates with audiences around the world. When he established Walt Disney Imagineering to help build his original theme park, Walt brought his filmmakers on board, envisioning the parks as immersive versions of his films.

From the very beginning, Imagineers have tapped into this sense, making it a key part of their creative process. Imagineers use sounds — especially music — to add layers of detail and atmosphere to the environment, evoke specific emotions, and enhance the overall experience.

Disney Songwriters The Sherman Brothers

Imagineers’ approach to music is deliberate and meticulous, in fact, it’s stood the test of time. This attention to detail is evident in the work of songwriters like the Sherman Brothers, who were among the first songwriters for Disneyland attractions, creating classics like “The Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room” and “It’s A Small World (After All),” which debuted at the 1964 New York World’s Fair and has been an earworm ever since. Their illustrious careers continue to be remembered and revered by generations of fans, and with the passing of Richard last weekend, we are forever grateful for the mark he and Robert left on the world.

Imagineer X Atencio

Continuing this legacy, in part, was Imagineer X Atencio, who crafted timeless lyrics like “Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me)” for Pirates of the Caribbean and “Grim Grinning Ghosts” for the Haunted Mansion. These iconic tunes, respectively scored by masterminds George Bruns and Buddy Baker, do more than enhance the cinematic experience — they create lasting memories for generations of guests.

As Imagineers continue their legacy of creating toe-tapping tunes and look towards the future, they are collaborating with award-winning talent and industry experts to bring new sounds to life. From the invigorating melodies of New Orleans to the music history of Nashville, we’re pulling back the musical curtain on some of our latest projects!

Musician PJ Morton at the piano recording the Tiana’s Bayou Adventure soundtrack

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure

Disney Parks share a long love of New Orleans, its culture and its music. As we  shared in episode one , Walt Disney drew inspiration from New Orleans when creating Audio-Animatronics figures. In the early days of Disneyland, New Orleans music was prominently featured with performances by Kid Ory and Louis Armstrong himself.

journey stone in love with lyrics

With a new story, there was a need for new music to go along with it.  Imagineers worked with Grammy-winner, PJ Morton, in New Orleans  to score a lyrical love letter to the city for  Tiana’s Bayou Adventure . These recording sessions resulted in both new renditions of favorite tunes from the film and an all-new, original song, “Special Spice” with vocals by Anika Noni Rose, the original voice of Princess Tiana and Disney Legend.

Musician PJ Morton at the piano recording the Tiana’s Bayou Adventure soundtrack

This is a new chapter for Tiana  as she grows her business and as a thank you to her community for their support, she’s throwing a party during Mardi Gras season. When it turns out there’s been a mix up in the preparations and she’s missing a band, Tiana invites us on a journey through the bayou discovering both friends familiar and anew for this last ingredient –  musical critters !

After the thrilling drop, you’ll soon approach Tiana and friends at her mansion, where Louis conducts a jazz band filled with all the critters we met on our journey. They play “Special Spice” along with Prince Naveen playing his ukulele and Prince Ralphie the drums. We’ve discovered the “Special Spice” making this joyful, one-of-a-kind celebration complete is in fact YOU. The melody continues as we approach Mama Odie, who acknowledges that this party wouldn’t be what it is without you.

PJ Morton rides Tiana's Bayou Adventure with the project team

As we near the attraction’s opening on June 28 at Magic Kingdom, PJ recently stopped by to hear his song alongside the project team. “Seeing my song on the ride for the very first time was mind blowing to me,” recounted PJ. “It’s surreal to be in this world after a long time writing this song and finally seeing it in action, it’s a dream come true.”

Not only does the latest episode of “We Call It Imagineering” feature a sneak peek of this catchy song, but the full version of “Special Spice” will also release on Walt Disney Records this Friday, May 31 across all streaming platforms!

Musician Terence Blanchard recording the Tiana’s Bayou Adventure soundtrack

Before even boarding the attraction, you’ll hear a radio program on a New Orleans station playing authentic jazz versions of familiar songs, including “Down in New Orleans,” “Ma Belle Evangeline” and more from “The Princess and the Frog”! Listen closely, you might catch the radio host sharing an important message to listeners, Tiana needs help finding musicians for her big party tonight.

Terence Blanchard, a featured musician in “The Princess and the Frog,” seven-time Grammy-winner and twice-Oscar nominated composer , helmed the music in the attraction’s queue. This is just one of the many ways Imagineers have leaned into local New Orleans voices to tell Tiana’s story — both artists are natives to this musical city.

Musician Terence Blanchard recording the Tiana’s Bayou Adventure soundtrack

“We really wanted to showcase New Orleans music, give people who are going to be in the queue line an experience of being in New Orleans,” shared Terence. “It will hopefully create a lasting memory and a relationship with the city.”

Leah Chase Jr. recording for Tiana's Bayou Adventure

The Chase family  is another center stone of the city and, as you may know, provided its own inspiration for “The Princess and the Frog.” We are honored that legendary singer Leah Chase Jr. and daughter of Chef Leah Chase who was one of the inspirations of Tiana, sings “Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans.” I’ve seen Leah perform at New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival before, but there is nothing like her rendition of this song, which generations of our guests will now be able to experience. We can’t wait to share this heartwarming tune with all of you — thank you, Leah!

Recording session for Country Bear Musical Jamboree at Walt Disney World

Country Bear Musical Jamboree

As we near the  opening of Country Bear Musical Jamboree this summer  at Walt Disney World, Imagineers have been hard at work preparing the new Disney tunes you will soon hear! Country Bear Musical Jamboree will include easter eggs from the beginning to the end, including a familiar tune fans may remember, the bears will sing new, reinterpreted Disney songs in different genres of country music — like bluegrass, pop-country, Americana, rockabilly and other styles.

Among the many songs coming to the show’s new rendition are “Try Everything” and “A Whole New World” from the Walt Disney Animation Studios films “Zootopia” and “Aladdin.” It’s a full-blown hoedown featuring a new spin on the songs like you’ve never heard before — complete with fiddles, mandolins, banjos and more!

Recording session for Country Bear Musical Jamboree at Walt Disney World

Paying homage to the musical revues of Nashville, Imagineers worked alongside record-breaking 10-time CMA Musician of the Year, Mac McAnally, on the music — McAnally is a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame and Alabama Music Hall of Fame. For the voice of the beloved bear, Trixie St. Claire, country singer Emily Ann Roberts added her twangy vocals to “Try Everything.” Allison Russell and Christopher Scott Thile slowed things down a bit with a mandolin-style of “A Whole New World” for Wendell and Teddi Barra.

Recording session for Country Bear Musical Jamboree at Walt Disney World

“I’ve never done anything like this, where the song is truly coming to life before folks’ eyes,” shared Emily Ann. “It was really neat to hear the whole concept and then being able to stand behind the mic and think ‘how do I put myself in Trixie’s shoes?’”

Disney Dreams That Soar Presented by AT&T at Disney Springs

Disney Dreams That Soar Presented by AT&T

This summer, get ready to hear even more music! Recently, the creative team behind “ Disney Dreams That Soar Presented by AT&T ” stepped into the studio to create a new song for  the limited-time Disney Springs drone show .

Written by Disney Live Entertainment music producer, Andrew Lipinski, with his young daughter in mind, this powerful anthem captures the show’s message of taking your dreams to the next level. In fact, he was so inspired by the show, Andrew went home following a team brainstorm and immediately penned the song we now hear in the show’s finale.

journey stone in love with lyrics

“My hope is that when people hear the finale song, they’re motivated to chase their dreams and to inspire others to chase theirs too,” Andrew expressed. “I think the best part of this song is the feeling of wanting to have togetherness and that’s what cuts through.”

The music of Disney theme parks is something that, once you hear it, it stays with you forever. That sense of nostalgia and the ability to share these musical moments with others is what makes Disney music so special and timeless. So, the next time you visit a Disney theme park, stop and listen — you might be surprised at what you hear and how it makes you feel.
