I agree with Jrny, This song's about saying goodbye to your long lost love but never really ever being able to let go. Steve Perry really sings with such raw emotion here, not sure if he's singing about anyone specifically but you believe him entirely.

This is my favorite song. You can almost feel the pain of whoever wrote the song by the words and by Steve Perry's voice. (I believe steve perry was cowriter) I would like to know the background of the song like if it was written about someone specifically. The song reminds me of a breakup I had where we still loved each other but just couldnt be together.

IMO this is one of the most under-rated power ballads ever to be written. Send Her My Love reminds me of my first girlfriend, we broke up after 7 months because of the distance. I don't think Steve Perry wrote this song for anyone specific, however he puts so much emotion into the song, you can't help but wonder, especially on the last verse: "Calling out her name I'm dreaming, reflections of her face I'm seeing, it's her voice that keeps on haunting me".

This is about Steve's daughter, and how much he regrets not being with her for so long. It's about the memories that haunt him of saying goodbye to her, and echoes of her voice while he hits the road again with the band for months on end. Incredibly sad. It kind of puts his strenuous attempts to make the Sherrie relationship work in a new light I think (taking her on the road for instance)..

@patsysmith and makes sense with the "insinuation of the " same hotel same room" I always wondered, like you , and everyone, if the incredible "love song" was incestuous or just about a chick. Glad you known the insights deep within the minds and hearts, (and pants apparently) of these artists!

An underrated ballad in my opinion, and should of charted higher than it did. The way Steve's emotions come through in this song are hauntingly brilliant. Whilst Faithfully deals with being in love with someone whilst being on the road, this deals with the breakup of a relationship due to the same circumstances.

In the song, he recalls the 'sad cafe' where the breakup most likely happened. He then goes on to recount the 'same hotel' and 'the same old room' where he spent his nights whilst on tour. After which he says that she needed so much more than he could give, meaning that he couldn't see her as often as he would like. The last chorus is where I think his emotion really shines through. He obviously still thinks about this girl and still cares very deeply about her, as he calls out her name in his sleep, and can still see reflections of her face, as well as the sound of her voice haunting him.

even soft rock can ROCK! great song off the Frontiers album(1983). very slow, haunting song. only Steve Perry can sing stuff like this, and i can't believe no one's fucking commented on this.

heavy on the keyboards (nice work Johnathan Cain), but hey it was the 80s.

Neal Schon is the fucking MAN. man he KILLS on that solo.

beautiful goodbye song, it means a lot more to me than the typical "bye i love you" songs and there are a zillion of those

i agree with master of puppets, another bad ass solo by a bad ass guitarist.steve perry's voice adds that extra "mood setting tone".fucking untouchable band!!!!!!

love this song AND STEVE

I love this song....it's so beautiful.....the softness of it.....I love it....

Songfacts®:

  • This is about a guy who had a girlfriend, but had to let her go. He thought she deserved better, and they both knew that the love wasn't real. When he dreams, he calls out her name; he's still in love with her and he sees her face everywhere. >> Suggestion credit : Michelle - Anaheim, CA
  • According to the liner notes in Journey's compilation Time3 , during the band's three-month vacation following the "Escape" tours, their keyboard player Jonathan Cain listened to a lot of Beatles records. He played the chords for this song on the piano in his front room one afternoon for lead singer Steve Perry. "He could magically weave a melody over anything I could play," Cain said. Eventually released as the fourth single off Frontiers , it is one of Perry's personal favorites.
  • In his Songfacts interview, Jonathan Cain talked about what inspired this song. "I had a girlfriend when I was a teenager and somebody had called backstage to one of the shows and said, 'Virginia still talks about you and your relationship.' It was just one of those offhanded comments. I looked at her and just said, 'Send her my love.' I walked out, and it hit me: 'Wait a minute, that's a song!' I went home and I called Steve Perry up and I said I came up with this idea, and we wrote it on the spot. A lot of this stuff we wrote was just on the spot. Very, very spontaneous. We kind of wrote with an urgency because we didn't have a lot of time together. The road was hard enough. When we did write, we wrote very intense. All the lyrics were, like, within hours. We didn't mess around."

“Send Her My Love” by Journey

by Amanda London · Published April 18, 2022 · Updated April 18, 2022

On Journey’s “Send Her My Love”, we find the vocalist in his feelings concerning his ex. Apparently, this is not due to him being the victim of a dumping or even particularly expressing a desire to have her back, as such pieces are usually premised. Instead, it’s more like he misses her and has a guilty conscience.

As presented, the two of them parted ways under less-than-ideal circumstances. Obviously, Steve did not want her to go. But in the grand scheme of things, Steve comes off as one of those types of individuals who felt that his girl was too good for him. And he was also confident that as time progressed, “broken hearts can always mend”. So all things considered, it would appear that, if anything, he cut her off.

But alas, the aforementioned philosophy pertaining to broken hearts has not proven true in his case, as the vocalist remains ‘haunted’ by what he did to his ex. So all of those factors combined culminates in him currently ‘sending her his love’.

Journey, "Send Her My Love"

Creation of “Send Her My Love”

According to Jonathan Cain, this song came about after the demise of a real relationship he was in as a teenager. He said he was a teenager when this happened. According to him, not long after breaking up with his girlfriend, one of his associates casually told him that his ex still often talked about him. It was at this point that he casually told this person this: “send her my love”. According to him, moments after saying this, it dawned on him that those words could be used as a song. He contacted Steve Perry and the two of them composed a song on the spot centering around the phrase and its idea.

Thus the composing of “Send Her My Love” is formally credited to the following:

  • Jonathan Cain
  • Steve Perry

The production, on the other hand, is credited to renowned record producers Kevin Elson and Mike Stone.

When was “Send Her My Love” released?

It was released on the 13th of February, 1983 from the album, “Frontiers”. This song happens to be one of four singles released prior to the official release of “Frontiers”.

Did this single chart?

Yes. It charted in the United States. Here, it peaked at No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The “Frontiers” Album

“Frontiers” is a 14-tracked album by Journey, recorded in 1982 and released on the 1st of February, 1983. It happens to be the American band’s eighth studio album.

Recording of the album took place at the Fantasy Studios in Berkeley,  California.

“Frontiers” was jointly produced by the aforementioned record producers (M. Stone and K. Elson). It was released through Columbia Records, an American record label.

The album peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart, making it the band’s best performing album in the UK. It was also very successful in Canada. Thus far, the album has gone 6x platinum in the United States and platinum in Canada.

I absolutely love this song. I want to get a rose tattoo with Roses Never Fade written under the 🌹

Personally one of the best (ballards) songs ever made for anyone who let that one get away

“Send Her My Love” was NOT released on February 13, 1983. It was released in September 1983.

This song was the fourth single released from the ‘Frontiers’ album, which was released February 1, 1983.

The first single released was “Separate Ways – January 5, 1983. The second was “Faithfully – April 16, 1983. Third was the single “After the Fall,” released July 1, 1983.

Since “Send Her My Love” was the last single released, there is no way it could have been February 13. Plus, the song made it’s debut listing on Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart on September 24, 1983, which notes that it was probably only out for about two to three weeks.

All of these dates were researched. Might need to change your write-up.

YEP, u r 100% correct mate!

The Marías Dive Deep on ‘Submarine’: ‘We Played Through’ Romantic Breakup Between Members, and Deluxe Album Reveal (EXCLUSIVE)

The Marías

In “Blur,” track six on the Marías ‘ new album “Submarine,” vocalist María Zardoya proclaims herself as an avoidant. Zardoya’s breathy voice sings about refusing to elaborate on any questions about the “mess” she’s made of her life, mainly because she can’t bare to recall the painful memories.

It’s a brave acknowledgment to make considering Zardoya, now sitting in her ex-boyfriend Josh Conway’s home studio, is openly discussing her life-altering breakup, what also happens to be the material for the Marías’ 14-song sophomore record and the follow-up to their critically acclaimed Grammy-nominated debut, “Cinema” (2021).

Popular on Variety

“The album’s material, from the songwriting to the details in the sound, is substantial,” Zardoya tells Variety . “I think with this level of honesty, obviously, came really awkward moments between us as a band. We had to learn to fight it and then embrace it, and ultimately, honesty is what’s best for the music and for the songs. We played through it and I’ll always look back it fondly because of that.”

The band spent four months apart between their last tour date and the the jam sessions that would eventually become “Submarine.” During that time, the future of the Marías was up in the air. Conway took a trip to Europe, in an “Eat, Pray, Love” kind of way, while Zardoya — who has written a majority of the Marías’ discography since the band started playing local shows in 2016 — expressed her grief on paper.

“There was no end goal,” Conway remembers. “We were just trying to see if we could still write and make music together. It wasn’t until we had finished all the songs on the album that we finally sat down and acknowledged that we could and we did create something we are all proud of.”

Once the band met up in person to play together again, “I remember I knew what I wanted to say,” Zardoya says, “but I hesitated to say it out loud because I was scared of how it would make Josh feel. There were a lot of those moments throughout this album that I was like ‘I know what I want to say, but I’m holding back.’ I was nervous to show the album to Ricky [Reed] and Brad [Haering], so I must’ve warned them a million times that the album wasn’t finished yet but they quickly were like ‘No, this is done. This is ready.'”

Breakup aside, “Submarine” sticks to its voyeuristic theme in its production and instrumental arrangements. Like most of the Marías’ records since their first two EPs, 2017’s “Superclean Vol. I” and 2018’s “Superclean Vol. II,” trumpets and strings accentuate the album’s more jazzy crescendos. The richest textures often come courtesy of undulating synths and Pearlman’s “secret guitar pedals” that can be delicate or rough, adding atmospheric reverb that mimics rippling water and similar sounds.

To create the album’s glistening art work (the band is even selling a vinyl “water cover” variant that has liquid inside the vinyl sleeve), the Marías spent hours uncomfortably submerged in a pool. “I was miserable,” Zardoya says. This was true not because Zardoya spent the most time underwater to capture the album’s cover art, but because her father (whose voice you hear at the end of “Ay No Puedo”) had suffered a stroke in the days before the shoot and she was emotionally shot.

“I got through the day and in the end, the visuals look beautiful,” she says, noting “that feeling is the foundation of the album: it was uncomfortable to make at times but we got through it and made something beautiful.”

“Hamptons”

There’s a bit of dancehall feel to this and a bit of a return to reggaeton. Before Maria, I didn’t know much about reggaeton, let alone producing it and I could make what we consider to be reggaeton, the things we hear on the radio but I feel like I would be stealing from people who really own that space like Tainy. So I find a way to make it ours, and I think this is the perfect example of doing that while still being the Marias. – Conway

“Echo”

The lyrics in “Echo” are painfully honest so it was one of the hardest ones to get through. Josh went to Europe shortly after “Echo” was written if that tells you anything. – Zardoya

“Echo” was also one of those songs that showed us pretty early on into the process that water would be a recurring theme. I’m pretty sure we had the bubbles you hear in the song already recorded before we even decided on “Submarine.” – Conway

“Real Life”

Josh is the best at bass lines. We were in Dominican Republic, and this song started as a full-band jam and lyrics came out, melody came out and Josh does what he does. When we write as a band its the easiest thing in the world, it’s very synergetic, I think. – Zardoya

It started with that one note, a C minor. I want to say María started singing and I was directing the band through note changes — “B-flat to G, back to beginning!” It came together the quickest. – Conway

“If Only”

We wrote this song as a tribute to Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan’s song, “Green Grass.” [Waits] has been a family friend of Josh’s and so we were able to send him the song before it came out and we asked him if he would be a co-writer. He technically didn’t write any of it but it was completely inspired by him and we’re honored he said yes. – Conway

“Sienna”

This is written from the standpoint of a broken relationship and of what could have been: We could have had a child together and named her Sienna, and she would have looked like you… Sienna would have acted like you, she would have jumped in the pool just like you, and she would have sang to all her pets like I do… she would have done all these things like us. But because we broke up, Sienna will never exist.

And so at the very end where I sing, “See her face in the forest, then it disappears,” it’s like seeing the future you wanted just completely vanish out of nowhere and that’s how this part of the album ends. – Zardoya

Comedy Trailblazer Carol Burnett On ‘Palm Royale’, Memories Of Robert Altman, Her Best Advice & The Part She’s Always Wanted

DEADLINE: Tell me how you came to connect with Girls5Eva creator Meredith Scardino and executive producer Tina Fey. And what was your first impression of the script?

RENÉE ELISE GOLDSBERRY : It was the middle of Covid. I was in this very room looking much younger and I had received an email that said a word I could not pronounce: Girls5eva . I had no idea what that was. But I read it, because I had nothing else to do. In the very beginning they had the lyrics to the one hit of this pop group and I just burst out laughing. And I was in. And it only got funnier. I think there was even a line in the pilot that got cut out where there’s a fight with Dawn [Bareilles] and Wickie says, “I’m the oldest and the fact that you don’t know that is just racist.” I just was like… my brain exploded. It’s so smart and so dense and so ridiculous at the same time. I was in, and it only really got better from that. I got to meet Meredith on a Zoom and Tina who I knew. It wasn’t a hard pitch.

DEADLINE: How did you know Tina Fey?

Renee Elise Goldsberry interview

DEADLINE: I love Paula Pell as Gloria in this show. When she calls up a previous one-night stand and says, “Hi, it’s Gloria from sex.”

GOLDSBERRY : So casually, “Gloria from sex.”

DEADLINE: Was there a collaborative aspect to how you embodied Wickie Roy, or was it all on the page?

GOLDSBERRY : I had the great humbling experience of playing her on Zoom for a table read before getting to set because it was Covid. God, let’s hope there’s no video of it… It is absolutely on the page — the hair, makeup, those clothes, and those other women in that world — really, more than any other character I’ve ever played. I could be Angelica Schuyler sitting right here in a sweatshirt, but Wickie really comes to life with those words in her mouth and all of the style and trappings. There’s so much about who she is in the fact that she walks around in every single moment saying, “Look at me, dammit.” You’ll never see her not screaming, “Look at me, discover me, acknowledge me. Give me my rightful place in the atmosphere, please?” That is her whole thing. And it’s so different from me.

DEADLINE: Since she’s so different from you, I wonder if in your work on Broadway and on screen, you’ve met many Wickies in your life?

GOLDSBERRY : [Laughs] I’ll not say their names.

DEADLINE: I’ve always felt a little bit jealous of people like Wickie, because they just have not even a drop of self-doubt.

GOLDSBERRY : My appreciation for her would be different if she was 25 years younger, watching her, because there’s just something that is synonymous with being beautiful and talented and young. We’re more used to seeing it on young, beautiful, talented women. A sense of just kind of privileged, just authority, just a claiming of who they are in the world. But what seems to be threatened as you get older is that sense of power. And that’s why I feel encouraged and inspired and affirmed at watching a character [like Wickie] refuse to apologize for that. Even as she gets older, she refuses. And these little things that she does. Like, “I’m dating a man that’s much, much younger than me. And I’m doing what’s been done to me and I’m not apologizing for that.”

We see women apologizing all around us all of the time. I literally just said to my daughter the other day when she was playing tennis almost as badly as me, “If you apologize one more time for hitting a ball bad, I’m not going to feed you dessert,” because I was like, “I don’t care if you play well, but just don’t apologize.” We are so conditioned to apologize. And it only gets worse as we get older. And so, this character, no matter how bad her behavior is, the fact that she doesn’t apologize on some level gives license that I think we need.

journey send her my love with lyrics

DEADLINE: The fact that these women aren’t in first flush of youth, that to me is the whole power of the show. And the show doesn’t harp on their ages either.

GOLDSBERRY : And can I tell you how, being in this season of my life, the reception of the show is healing to me? Here’s something we don’t do, much to my chagrin, and that is, when we do flashbacks, there’s no airbrushing. We just put the clothes on and go for it

GOLDSBERRY : Tina literally said, “We’re going to go SNL because we don’t have the budget.” She didn’t say it like that, she’s much classier than that. There’s no illusion when we go back to the ‘90s that this is really how we would have looked in the ‘90s. And the fact that the audience allows us to do all these jump cuts and flashbacks and these outfits and embraces it is really healing to me. At this age and stage of my life I’m still here, trying to take big swings and be ambitious. The success of it means more to me than, “Oh, the show’s doing well.” And also, just the fact that it’s embraced by people that are not just women of this age group.

DEADLINE: Tell me about performing the Girls5Eva songs. I love the idea of Sara Bareilles sitting down going, “OK, how do I make this really awful, but also brilliant?”

GOLDSBERRY : Unlike the Dawn character where you’re watching someone who is obviously a genius songwriter, try to learn how to write songs, with air quotes, with Wickie, you’re watching somebody that you know is a singer, sing. I sing obnoxiously on the show, but I am not trying to sing badly. My riff rolodex that I got to do in Season 2, if you think the riffs are corny and trite, it’s not because I wasn’t trying to make good ones. That’s just what I had in the moment.

DEADLINE: You have your own album coming out too, right?

GOLDSBERRY : I have an album of original music that I wrote, and to get to have been writing it while I’m on a show with Sara Bareilles, watching her creative process has been a true gift to me. She’s just been a great sister to me in terms of her encouragement on the journey. And it’s not lost on me that any hesitation I might have in putting it out there, I really have to ignore it, because the part of me that plays Wickie is standing up.

It feels sometimes dangerous, unnecessarily dangerous, to ask for more every year I get older. And so, I believe god put this in my life, to not let me settle. And even if it wasn’t for Wickie and Girls5eva , everywhere I look I see women — Paula Pell, Busy Philipps, Sara Bareilles — but I mean everywhere else, JLO, Beyoncé, Dolly Parton. Everywhere I look, there are women that are not retiring. It’s like they’re saying, “My future will be even greater.”
