The only living musician to hold the Order of Merit, Jimmy Cliff is a ska/reggae singer and musician from St. James, Jamaica.

Born on 1 April 1948 in Somerton District, St. James, Jamaica, Cliff began writing songs at as early as primary school, and as he got older, would seek out producers for his music. At the age of 14 he convinced producer, Leslie Kong, to go into business with Cliff and after a series of unsuccessful songs, the song “Hurricane Hattie” took off. It didn’t take long until he was signed by Island Records and moved to the United Kingdom. His debut album, “Hard Road to Travel” was released in 1967.The recorded contained what was later to become his best-known singles such as “Vietnam” and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People.” Cliff ventured into acting in 1972 as Ivanhoe in the film “The Harder They Come” while also releasing a series of albums. Cliff then took a break from music and traveled to Africa, where he converted to Islam, taking on the new name: El Hadj Naim Bachir.

Cliff returned to music in the early 80s touring for several years before returning to the studio. In 1985 his album “Cliff Hanger” won a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. He also returned to acting, appearing in the film “Marked For Death” in 1990. He continued performing live throughout the early 21st century, as well as gigantic music festivals. In 2002 he released “Fantastic Plastic People” in Europe that included collaborations with Annie Lennox and Sting. In October 2003 he was awarded The Order of Merit, the highest honour granted by the Jamaican government for arts and sciences.

Walking into a place that is giving away free Taco Bell had me a little weary, but then again I came to expect that anything can happen at SXSW. This also includes a free show by the great Jimmy Cliff. He was the last act of the night and by the way that security had to lead him gingerly to the stage, holding his arms and flashlights following his every step, I had a feeling it was going to be a pretty lax show. I couldn't have been more wrong. The crowd was thick and sweaty and completely in tune with Mr. Cliff as he rolled out jam after memorable jam. Sitting In Limbo must have been the one song that stood out the most--wrapping around my brain in such a fashion that my memory of that night would be forever sealed and locked away. My friend captured an amazing image--one I can still picture even three years after that incredible night. It's a picture of Jimmy draped in the deep purple lighting of the stage, engulfed in fog, holding up a single finger. It's a very beautiful image and one that holds a special place in my heart... And out of all the music that was played that week. Out of the hundreds, maybe even thousands of bands that rolled through downtown Austin, he might just have been my favorite.

Great show. Opening act, Zongo Junction, were one of the best opening acts I've seen in quite a while. African, world, a mix of cultures, they were very entertaining. Then Jimmy Cliff and band came out, and it was so much better than expected. Cliff was enthusiastic, even with the room being half empty. And his band, and particularly his lead background singer, were fantastic. FOUR ENCORES, and it was over. And it still felt too soon to end. And then there's the venue. Brooklyn Bowl may be the best music venue on the entire west coast of america. Great sight lines everywhere, and great sound.

The iconic Jimmy Cliff is reggae and ska's great ambassadors of peace and unity. With his 10 plus piece band he rilles the audience into a frenzy of dancing, singing, call and response and cheering on the human spirit. He performed old classic ska songs dancing the monkey-man to the delight of everyone, he steered the mood to thoughtful songs of peace and justice then kicked it out with classics like Johnny Nash's seventies hit 'I can See Clearly Now' and of course hit movie soundtrack hit of the same name 'The Harder They Come.' Plan to break a serious sweet dancing the night away.

Last of the reggie legends. This man didn't disappoint. The crowd were on their feet from start to finish, singing along to all his hits. Amazing energy for a man at 70. What a show !

It was great. Very nice concert. Love it. Cool musicians. Nice show.

I wanted to share this with you because if this was happening to my fans, I’d want to know.

I bought 5 tickets to June 24th concert in Ridgefield, Wa on Groupon. I planned on taking my 79yr old mother in law and 65yr old mother as a Mothers Day gift. Four generations total to celebrate.

I went today to double check start time today for TOMORROW’S concert and my tix had been canceled!

Groupon said the merchant LiveOn canceled for unavailability. I went to find their number and they are still selling tix today on their site. I was not given any kind of notification from LiveOn or Groupon that these were canceled.

This seems so ethically wrong and just bad business!

So disappointed I will be unable to take my family to a much anticipated event that we took off work for and been planning for a couple months.

Celebrating five decades of his magnum opus, Jimmy Cliff is preparing The Harder They Come 50th Anniversary Edition vinyl on December 9, 2022 via UMe.

Cliff, one of the most important reggae artists of all-time, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and Grammy Award-winning icon, is getting the project pressed to vinyl for the very first time. In addition to a 2LP gatefold wrapped jacket with lamented gloss coating, the package boasts the liner notes from the 40th Anniversary Edition in addition to brand new words courtesy of Jimmy personally and revered reggae historian Dana Smart.

In 1972, the film The Harder They Come arrived and eventually emerged as a cult classic with Cliff in the starring role. The accompanying The Harder They Come Soundtrack brought an international spotlight to reggae music. The album initially climbed to No.141 on the Billboard 200, and its legacy would only grow as time passed.

The year 2021 saw the Library of Congress choose it for preservation in the National Recording Registry, deeming it “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant.” Rolling Stone touted The Harder They Come Soundtrack on its coveted “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” list.

Cliff delivers “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” the gritty title track, the mellow “Sitting In Limbo” and the song widely regarded as his masterpiece, “Many Rivers To Cross”–still a moving ballad all these years later. The Maytals offer “Sweet And Dandy,” a tale of wedding celebrations, and “Pressure Drop,” another articled classic. Desmond Dekker , Kong’s biggest international star, has just one track, the ebullient “007,” already five years old when the album was released, but its rude-boy commentary suited the movie, as did The Slickers’ “Johnny Too Bad,” one of the few The Harder They Come soundtrack tunes not produced by Kong, but using the same studio and band.

The album’s other gentle and reflective song is The Melodians’ “Rivers Of Babylon”; poor souls who only know the Boney M version will be surprised by its sincere and soulful piety. A hint of reggae’s future came courtesy of Scotty’s “Draw Your Brakes,” a DJ tune produced by Derrick Harriott.

Cliff continues to impact culture. He recently revealed his first new album in over a decade, Refugees [UMe]. The critically acclaimed full-length includes guest appearances from Wyclef Jean, Dwight Richards, and his daughter Lilty Cliff. Forbes notably hailed it as “vintage Cliff” and promised, “Cliff once again delivers his passion, wisdom, empathy and thoughtfulness on his stunning new collection, Refugees,” and FLAUNT applauded its “13 tracks of his inimitable grasp on the reggae sound and his optimistic, yet cut-no-corners truth he has been lauded for over the past six decades.” He also sat down with  The Guardian  and  The Independent  for in-depth interviews.

As lively as ever, Cliff celebrated his 78th birthday on July 30.

In 2012, Cliff gifted the world with his most recent LP Rebirth. It garnered a GRAMMY® Award in the category of “Best Reggae Album” and closed out the year on Rolling Stone’s “50 Best Albums of 2012.” He stands out as “the only living reggae musician to hold the Order of Merit—the highest honor that can be granted by the Jamaican government for achievements in the arts and sciences.” Of course, his catalog spans seminal songs “Many Rivers To Cross,” “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “The Harder They Come,” and “Hakuna Matata.” He contributed covers of Cat Stevens’ “Wild World” and Johnny Nash’s “I Can See Clearly Now” to the classic comedy Cool Runnings.

We told you about our new album 72 Seasons , so what’s next now that we’ve escaped the studio? Hit the road, of course! You want a tour, we’ve got a tour... how about two full years worth of shows?!?!

Over the past few years, we have been so inspired by the dedication and family/community vibe of the fans who traveled to San Francisco for our recent weekend celebrations, first in 2019 with the two S&M2 shows, followed by last year’s 40th Anniversary shows. On top of that, we had a blast being a part of the 2021 Wimmer Festivals when we played two nights in one city, each with a totally different setlist. With all of that in mind, the M72 tour was born!

Starting in April of 2023, we’ll be visiting 22 different cities around the world and playing two nights in each city, with each “No Repeat Weekend” show a completely unique experience: Two totally different set lists with two different bands opening the show each night! Purchase a two-day ticket, and you won’t see the same song twice for a total of over 30 songs spanning our 40+ years of being lucky enough to make music. Most of the shows (sorry, not all - we tried!) will be on Fridays and Sundays, so we’ll be sure to have lots of extracurricular events for you to hang with fellow Metallica fans at before the shows kick-off and on the Saturday night in between.

On top of that, the Snake Pit has been relocated to the center of the stage so that fans there will have a complete 360 view of the show. Each weekend offers a variety of Enhanced Experiences , ranging from access to a meet and greet, production and stage tour, food and beverage in the “Black Box” lounge to early entry into the venue and the aforementioned Snake Pit. The very popular “Black Laminate” is back, now known as the “I Disappear Ticket,” and is the ultimate pass for the fan who wants to run away with us for multiple weekends. In keeping with the theme of two completely unique shows each weekend, we’re excited to share the stage with different bands each night, including some we have traveled with before and new friends who are joining us for the first time. Signing up for the entire adventure with us are Five Finger Death Punch, Ice Nine Kills, and MammothWVH, and some of you will see Pantera, Architects, Greta Van Fleet, or Volbeat, depending on the shows you attend. Two-day discounted tickets will be on sale Friday, December 2, for all shows. Fan Club presales start early on Wednesday, November 30, with various other presales beginning later that day and throughout the week. A portion of proceeds from every ticket sold will go to the band’s All Within My Hands foundation. Founded in 2017, AWMH’s efforts to assist and enrich the lives of members of the communities who have supported the band have raised nearly $13 million – providing $5.9 million in grants to career and technical education programs in the US, over $2.5 million to combat food insecurity, and more than $3.2 million to disaster relief efforts worldwide.
