Car parking and transport to Southampton

Pre-booked car parking is available at all Southampton cruise terminals through Cruise and Passenger Services (CPS). If you wish to leave your car at the terminal whilst on your cruise, you’ll need to book your space no less than 10 days before your departure by visiting the CPS website.

If your cruise is eligible for complimentary car parking, we’ll confirm this with you at the time of booking your holiday. You’ll then be issued with a unique code to redeem on the CPS website (please allow 72 hours for activation). If you’re not eligible for complimentary parking, don’t worry, you can still arrange parking at the terminal by visiting the CPS website and booking directly. All bookings should be made no less than 10 days before your ship is due to sail from Southampton.

When you arrive at the cruise terminal for your holiday, you’ll be directed to a drop-off lane where you can unload your luggage. Your car will then be checked in and driven to a secure long-stay car park by a CPS valet, where it will remain for the duration of your cruise. On your arrival back to Southampton, simply collect your luggage and make your way to the CPS car park. Your keys will be returned to you and you’ll be directed to your car so you can start your journey home.

Complimentary coach transfers, to and from Southampton, are just another of the benefits you can choose from if you book the Cunard Fare for your holiday. Coach transfers are available on roundtrip cruises of seven nights or more, sailing from Southampton (with the exception of World Voyages), and apply to all guests on the booking.

If you wish to take advantage of coach transfers, you should let us know at the time of booking and then contact Intercruises on 0845 052 0537, no later than 30 days before your cruise is due to depart from Southampton.

If you plan on travelling to Southampton by train, the closest station to the cruise terminals is Southampton Central. The journey takes approximately one hour and 20 minutes from London Waterloo, 17 minutes from Winchester, four and a half hours from Manchester Piccadilly, one hour and 40 minutes from Bristol Temple Meads, and two hours and 30 minutes from Exeter St David’s.

All four terminals are a short distance from the train station.

To Horizon terminal, it's roughly a 3 minute drive or a about a 12 minute walk.

To Ocean terminal, it's around an 8 minute drive or about a 32 minute walk.

To City terminal, it is about a 3 minute drive or roughly a 14 minute walk.

To Mayflower terminal, it's roughly a 6 minute drive or about a 23 minute walk.

The nearest airport to the cruise terminals is Southampton City Airport. From here you can either get a taxi directly to your cruise terminal in Southampton or catch the train one stop to Southampton Central and take a taxi from there. Southampton Airport offers direct routes to many cities, including Edinburgh, Dublin, Glasgow, Paris, Belfast, and Amsterdam. It’s also possible to fly direct from Southampton to Guernsey and Jersey, as well as selected destinations in Europe.

Yes. You’ll find a café serving refreshments within the departure lounge of each cruise terminal in Southampton (Ocean, Mayflower, Horizon, and City).

As well as serving hot and cold drinks, including selected alcoholic options, each outlet also offers a selection of sandwiches, cakes, and snack foods.

There are plenty of hotels and B&Bs in Southampton and the surrounding areas, should you wish to stay over for a night or two before your voyage. With hotels such as The Moxy, Holiday Inn, and Habour Hotel.

You could also stay over in London, and spend some time taking in the highlights of the capital. If you'd like to arrange your hotel stay with Cunard, we can make a booking on your behalf at the following, London-based hotels: The Biltmore - Mayfair, The Doubletree by Hilton - Tower of London, or Conrad London St James.

Southampton is famous for its ports, Medieval architecture, and maritime history. You can catch a glimpse into this past all around the city, from the walls that once separated Southampton from the Solent to buildings such as the Tudor House & Garden, Bargate, and the 13 th Century God’s House Tower. The oldest building still in use, however, is St Michael the Archangel Church, founded in 1070. You can find this on St Michael’s Square in the city’s Old Town.

Home to two universities, and one of the greenest cities on the South Coast, Southampton is also a thriving cultural hub. The SeaCity Museum, John Hansard Gallery, and Southampton City Art Gallery are just some of its top attractions for a culture fix. But if it’s nature you’re after, make a beeline for the city’s 300-acre Common. Just a short stroll from Southampton’s centre, this gargantuan park offers the opportunity to lose yourself among tall trees, lakes, and wild woodland. It’s a perfect way to escape the urban bustle.

The city is also known as a great place to eat, drink, and shop, with many brands, bars, and restaurants, many within or near WestQuay Shopping Centre.

Surprisingly for a city on the South Coast of England, Southampton doesn’t have a beach.

Cowes, on the Isle of Wight, has a shingle beach that you can reach from Southampton using the high-speed Red Jet service, which takes around 25 minutes each way. It’s a pretty place to explore over a couple of hours, with some interesting shops as well as some nice cafés, bars, and restaurants.

Alternatively, you can take a train to Bournemouth (approximately 50 minutes from Southampton Central railway station), where you’ll find several sand beaches, lined by a beachfront promenade that’s great for walking.

Southampton is a great place to indulge in some retail therapy.

Many of the city’s shops can be found under one roof in its three-tier shopping mall, WestQuay as well as numerous restaurants located around the city centre, including pubs, and Italian, Greek, Asian, American, and Mexican eateries. Among the sleek glass and steel walkways here you’ll find a host of high-street brands, including the popular M&S and John Lewis, both of which also have an on-site café.

You’ll find a further selection of stores in Southampton’s pedestrianised shopping precinct, the Marlands shopping mall, and WestQuay retail park. There’s also an IKEA in the city centre, and gift shops within the city’s art galleries and museums.

With a thriving shopping scene, a blend of galleries and museums, and no shortage of green spaces, Southampton is a great city to explore.

The city’s two art galleries, the John Hansard Gallery and City Art Gallery, are both free to enter and within a stone’s throw of one another in the Cultural Quarter. You also have the SeaCity Museum nearby, where you can discover Southampton’s Titanic story through a series of interactive exhibits.

In the Old City of Southampton, you’ll find the city’s famous Medieval walls and its most historic buildings. The Tudor House & Garden, the Medieval Merchant’s House, and St Michael’s Archangel Church, which dates back to 1070, are all located in this part of town.

Southampton is also home to a charming collection of historic pubs including the Duke of Wellington, the Red Lion, and the Dancing Man, which offers unique own-brand beers in a beautiful stone building that was at one time a working wool mill.

The Isle of Wight is also accessible in under half an hour by taking the Red Jet from Southampton to Cowes.

Cruises from Southampton

Southamptom, england port information.

A cruise out of Southampton unlocks all kinds of incredible destinations, from French and Spanish wine country to Norway’s majestic fjords. But this charming port is also a great destination in and of itself. Spend some time getting to know it before your holiday – you won’t be disappointed. If you have a soft spot for mediaeval history, you’ll find plenty of interesting sites here. Like Bargate, a gatehouse that dates back over a thousand years to Norman times. Or visit St Michael's church on Castle Way – built in the 11th century, it’s home to ancient Norman artefacts and relics. Then, fast forward a few centuries at the Tudor house in St Michael’s Square, which served as the home of a wealthy merchant family in the 15th century. Today it’s a museum that showcases exhibits featuring nearly a thousand years of local history.

When is the best time to book a cruise from Southampton?

When it comes to when to book, you may be wondering: does the early bird really get the worm, or are there perks to procrastinating? Planning ahead is a great way to nab big savings, as Royal Caribbean® often runs early saver deals to guests booking well in advance. Also, the closer you get to your preferred sail date, availability goes down, usually driving prices up. The net-net: booking ahead is a surefire way to lock in a great cruise deal, while waiting entails some risk. That said, booking a cruise at the last minute can also yield unexpected savings — but only if the itinerary you’re interested in isn’t sold out yet!

2024’s Top Family Cruise Options

For families planning a cruise in 2024, Royal Caribbean International offers exceptional options departing from Southampton. The Anthem of the Seas, one of their most family-friendly ships, is packed with activities for all ages, including the SeaPlex, the most significant indoor active space at sea, offering bumper cars, roller skating, and circus school. Families can enjoy the onboard water park, rock climbing walls, and adventure-themed rooms explicitly designed for kids and teens. The convenience of cruising from Southampton in 2024 makes this an excellent choice for families looking to embark directly from the UK.

P&O Cruises also sets sail from Southampton and is highly favoured by families, particularly with their ship Iona, which is dedicated to providing a fun and relaxing experience for parents and children alike. The ship features an impressive SkyDome with a pool that transforms into a stage for nighttime entertainment, a dedicated children’s club for various age groups, and family-friendly cabins that cater to larger groups with comfort and style.

Cunard Line, known for its luxurious cruises, offers a more refined experience that appeals to families desiring an educational and sophisticated travel experience. Departing from Southampton, the Queen Mary 2 is pet-friendly and provides a unique Planetarium at sea, where families can learn about stars and planets together. The ship’s rich program of workshops, lectures, and shows ensures that even the youngest travellers receive a culturally enriching experience.

Celebrity Cruises departs from Southampton with the Celebrity Silhouette, emphasising family luxury and comfort. This ship boasts a range of family-oriented accommodations and dining options, along with the Lawn Club, where one can enjoy outdoor games and movies under the stars. Their extensive kids’ club program, Camp at Sea, offers over 500 activities that change daily. It ensures no two trips are the same and provides educational and playful experiences tailored to children’s interests and age groups.

Onboard Activities for Kids and Teens

Family cruises provide a treasure trove of activities for kids and teens, ensuring that younger passengers have as much fun as their parents. Onboard programs often include supervised kids’ clubs, segmented by age groups, allowing for tailored activities that cater to specific developmental stages. For instance, toddlers might enjoy puppet shows and play areas, while older children could engage in science experiments and cooking classes.

Many ships feature dedicated zones equipped with the latest gaming technology for teenagers, offering everything from video games to virtual reality experiences. These teen lounges often have their disco areas for evening dances, an excellent opportunity for teens to socialise with peers in a safe, supervised environment. During the day, sports tournaments, scavenger hunts, and filmmaking workshops encourage teens to be active and creative, providing a break from screen time.

Water-based activities are a central attraction for families, with many ships boasting expansive water parks that include slides, splash pads, and wave pools. These aquatic playgrounds cater to thrill-seekers of all ages and are perfect for families to enjoy together. For a more relaxed pace, family pool areas offer the chance for everyone to cool off, while lounge areas provide a space for parents to keep an eye on their kids comfortably.

Family cruises often feature live shows that appeal to a younger audience, such as magic acts, acrobatics performances, and character meet-and-greets with favourite animated characters. Evening movies under the stars and themed family nights, like pirate or movie characters, offer wholesome entertainment that brings families together for memorable experiences. These diverse offerings ensure that kids and teens have no shortage of engaging activities, keeping the youthful spirit alive throughout the journey.

Tips for Smooth Boarding with Kids

Boarding a cruise with kids at Southampton’s terminals is streamlined by specific family-friendly processes designed to make the experience as smooth as possible. Family lanes are available at check-in, especially during peak times, allowing families to move faster than regular lines. These lanes are staffed with personnel trained to assist with families’ needs, from handling strollers to entertaining young children to keep them happy and engaged during the wait.

Once through check-in, families often have access to priority boarding, a benefit that reduces the time spent waiting to board the ship. This is particularly advantageous when travelling with young children who may find it challenging to wait in long lines. Priority boarding allows families to settle into their cabins and start enjoying the ship’s facilities sooner, helping to keep everyone in good spirits.

For entertainment, while waiting, Southampton terminals provide play areas designed to keep children occupied. These areas feature a variety of games and activities suitable for different age groups, ensuring that children are safely entertained while parents handle boarding logistics. The play areas are situated close to the main waiting zones, so parents can easily keep an eye on their kids.

Upon approaching the boarding time, announcements are made specifically for families, guiding them to board at convenient times to avoid the rush. This helps manage the flow of passengers and ensures that families with small children can board the ship in a relaxed and orderly manner. These announcements are clear and frequent, ensuring that all families are well-informed of the best times to head towards the gangway, contributing to a stress-free start to their vacation.

Packing for the Whole Family

When packing for a family cruise, it is essential to organise clothing by climate and planned activities. Pack versatile layers for everyone—light t-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, and sweaters or hoodies. These can be easily adjusted to suit varying weather conditions onboard and ashore. Include at least one formal outfit per person for special evenings, and don’t forget swimwear and cover-ups for poolside lounging or beach excursions.

For toiletries, create a central family kit with larger-sized shampoos, toothpaste, and sunscreen to save space instead of packing individual items. Include medications and first aid essentials such as band-aids, pain relievers, and seasickness remedies. Waterproof pouches are excellent for storing these items to prevent leaks and are easy to carry on excursions. Additionally, packing a separate bag for each family member’s smaller personal items keeps things organised and accessible.

Entertainment is crucial, especially for younger travellers. Pack a range of options without Wi-Fi, like books, colouring books, travel games, and a deck of cards. For compact packing, electronic tablets loaded with movies and apps can be a lifesaver during downtime. Don’t forget chargers and portable batteries to ensure devices stay powered up throughout the journey.

Consider the logistics of carrying your luggage. Use suitcases that are easy to manoeuvre, and ensure each family member holds a backpack or tote for personal essentials. Packing cubes can be a game-changer—they help separate clothing by type or day and simplify unpacking and finding things on the ship. Label each bag clearly with tags to quickly identify your family’s luggage among the sea of travel gear. This systematic approach to packing will keep the family organised, comfortable, and ready to enjoy every moment of the cruise.

Gratuities: During your cruise, regardless of which Princess ship you choose, you will meet staff who provide you with excellent service. Crew members often rotate to different vessels within the Princess fleet which helps to maintain our high standards on every ship. These dedicated workers reflect our philosophy that all crew on all ships are but one family who share in our success. To simplify the tipping process for our guests, a discretionary gratuity of $16.50 per guest for suites, $15.50 per guest for mini-suites and club class, and $14.50 per guest for interior, oceanview, and balcony staterooms. This gratuity will be shared amongst those staff who help provide and support your cruise experience, including all waitstaff, stateroom stewards, buffet stewards, and housekeeping staff across the fleet. A 18% gratuity is added to bar charges, dining room wine accounts, and Lotus Spa® services. This is shared amongst the beverage staff, their support staff and Lotus Spa® personnel. Casino dealers and youth staff do not share in these gratuities. We know you will find these services onboard exemplary. Please note gratuities will be deemed undisputed unless a request to modify is received prior to disembarking the ship.
