Exclusive transportation, iconic destinations, private guides, signature experiences, a taste of what to expect…, day 1: nairobi.

Arrive in Nairobi, Kenya and transfer to Giraffe Manor

Arrive into the private VIP customs area at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi. After a warm welcome by your superb &Beyond private guides and ground staff, a private transfer vehicle will sweep you away to Giraffe Manor.

Overnight at Giraffe Manor in Nairobi

As one of Nairobi’s most iconic retreats, the historic Giraffe Manor offers a truly enchanting opportunity to interact with its resident herd of Rothschild giraffe. In the mornings and evenings, the giraffe visit the Manor, casually interrupting mealtimes by poking their long necks into the windows of the dining area in search of a delicious treat.

Day 2-3: Masai Mara National Reserve

Transfer from Nairobi to the Masai Mara

Linger over a delectable breakfast and a likely visit from the curious Rothschild Giraffes that make their home here. A private transfer will be waiting to take you to Wilson airport for your private charter flight into open plains of the Masai Mara. On arrival the wide smiles of the &Beyond team will accompany you on a short game drive to the camp.

Spend 2 nights at Bateleur Camp in the Masai Mara

Tucked away at the foot of the scenic Oloololo escarpment (the rim of the Great Rift Valley), in Kenya’s iconic Masai Mara National Reserve, is the classic and elegant &Beyond Bateleur Camp. Here, amidst the reserve’s astounding year round concentration of animals, including the Great Wildebeest Migration, guests can experience an unsurpassed wildlife experience.

This romantic and totally private camp reflects the ambiance of Kenyan safaris of the ‘20s and ‘30s, and is situated where the famous final scene of the movie Out of Africa was filmed. Spend a fascinating afternoon with Jonathan Scott, acclaimed documentarian and host of Big Cat Diary, long running BBC Documentary series. Adventures abound with twice-daily game drives and spot-lit night drives. Optional activities include a hot air balloon safari or a community excursion that includes memorable interactions with the Maasai.

Spend the day in a hot air balloon, a safari game drive and an afternoon with an acclaimed documentarian

Dawn arrives with a chorus of bird calls in the bush. Sip a steaming tea or coffee and watch the morning sun turn the plains golden and green. Float silently above the plains with the rising sun, hearing only the occasional soft roar of the whisper burners as the balloon pilot takes you up over the game-dotted landscape. Lean back and relax after a sumptuous bush breakfast, surrounded by nothing but the sweeping expanse of the Masai Mara.

Roll gently with the motion of the rumbling 4×4 as your expert guide positions the vehicle to provide the perfect photograph. Spend a golden afternoon immersed in the story behind the scenes of Big Cat Diaries with host and acclaimed documentarian Jonothan Scott. Witness the snorting, cavorting antics of the Great Migration’s wildebeest and zebra.

Day 4-5: Ngorongoro Crater

Private charter flight to Tanzania

Take a last look at the sweeping expanse of the Masai Mara below as your private charter flight departs for Tanzania via Migori or Jomo Kenyatta. Arrive into Manyara airstrip, Tanzania, where welcoming &Beyond guides await to transfer you up to the rim of the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater Lodge. Arrive to a joyful, singing African welcome at &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge.

Spend 2 nights at &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

Perched on the edge of the world’s oldest intact caldera, the award-winning &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is fit for a king and queen. Here, guests can be forgiven for losing track of which era, or even continent, they are experiencing. A range of extraordinary experiences await at &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge.

Think…captivating sundowners in the company of charismatic Maasai warriors, exclusive candlelit dinners with awe-inspiring views, and a full-day game drive into the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, with lunch served in a spectacular bush banquet on the crater floor.

Spend the day on the crater floor, dining on a grand lunch banquet and sipping sundowners

Breathe deeply and feel the cool, clear air of the crater rim fill your lungs. Stand high on the edge of a world cradled by the rugged walls of a perfectly preserved caldera. Try to fit the sheer grand scale of it all into a photograph (if you aren’t sure how to, ask your expert guide!)

Descend into the crater itself, into a sheltered world of predators and prey, dramatic chases and unforgettably scenic tableaux lit by shafts of golden afternoon sunlight. Dine on a grand lunch banquet set up just for you on the crater floor. Sip an icy sundowner at the rim and hear the wild cries of leaping Maasai rise into the clear night sky, borne upward by the sparks of a towering bonfire.

Day 6: Victoria Falls

Private charter flight to Victoria Falls

Enjoy a scrumptious breakfast up on top of the world before your private vehicle transfers you to Manyara Airstrip. Your private charter flight awaits to fly you to Kilimanjaro International Airport to meet up with the private jet. Depart Kilimanjaro for the majestic Victoria Falls, where the &Beyond Matetsi River Lodge team will be waiting to transfer you to the lodge.

Spend 1 night at Matetsi River Lodge

Combining an exceptional wildlife experience and 15km (9 miles) of private Zambezi River frontage, with easy access to the majestic Victoria Falls, Matetsi Private Game Reserve is an exclusive safari oasis that plays host to an incredible array of experiences.

Experience Victoria Falls from a unique perspective as you gaze on unparalleled scenery from above that promises unsurpassed views. Delight in a spectacular tour of the Victoria Falls followed by a beautiful sundowner boat cruise along a private stretch of river. The next morning after a delicious breakfast, enjoy thrilling game viewing adventures in 50 000 hectares (123 500 acres) of pristine wilderness.

Day 7-9: Kruger National Park

Private jet flight to the Kruger National Park

Spend a leisurely breakfast watching the sun play across the waters of the mighty Zambezi River. A private transfer will take you to Victoria Falls airport to board the private jet, bound for Kruger Mpumalanga Airport in Nelspruit ,South Africa.

Arrive at this gateway to the Kruger National Park for a short charter flight to Ngala Airstrip, where the beaming &Beyond team will welcome you to the wildlife-rich bushveld of South Africa.

Spend 3 nights at &Beyond Ngala Tented Camp

While &Beyond Ngala Tented Camp never lets you forget that you are in the wild, there is nothing primitive about this chic and contemporary camp. The romance of canvas, with hypnotic night sounds, and flickering lanterns mingle with the simple sophistication of polished wooden decks, textured fabrics and clean lines.

Experience the rare opportunity to participate in a Rhino Notching experience. Get up close and personal with these highly endangered giants of the African bush on this once in a lifetime adventure, to assist in the conservation of rhinos. Additional exciting activities include game drives, bush walks, hot air balloon safaris or a scenic helicopter flight over the lowveld.

Experience a rhino-notching adventure or spend the day with the Anti-Poaching tracker dog unit

Today you will embark on an adventure unlike any other. You will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join in on a rhino notching experience. As this is a sensitive project involving a live animal, the rhino notching team will choose either your second or third day to pursue the activity.

Here, you will have the opportunity to witness the capture and darting of either a black or a white rhino. A wildlife vet will locate and dart the rhino from the vantage point of a helicopter, whilst you, and the ground crew, follow in open 4×4 safari vehicles. Once darted, the veterinary team will notch the sleeping animal’s ear for research and security monitoring, as well as insert a microchip into the horn, enabling researchers to correctly identify different rhino on the reserve.

Should the rhino notching activity not be available, spend the day with the anti-poaching tracker dog unit learning how they fight the dangers of poaching each day, and spend time with these highly specialized canines in their daily routines.

Explore the bush on twice-daily game drives that venture out in search of the Big Five, as well as a host of other fascinating creatures. Ngala is fortunate to have had regular sightings of the endangered African wild dog, so make sure to keep an eye out for this fascinating animal. The early morning game drive will leave in the cool grey of dawn, with the mysteries of the bush lying open before you.

Your experienced ranger and tracker team will discuss what you hope to see prior to the drive and will do their best to find all your favourite animals for you. After breakfast there is the option to set off on a bush walk and explore the finer details of your surroundings, from animal tracks to plants, insects and birds. Another game drive sets off in the late afternoon, continuing after dark for a glimpse into the nocturnal lives of Africa’s predators.

Day 10-11: Cape Town

Private jet transfer to Cape Town

Take off over a crowd of waving arms and smiling faces as you depart Ngala for Kruger Mpumalanga airport. The jet stands ready to take to you fabulous Cape Town, the Mother City of South Africa. Spend 2 nights at One&Only Cape Town

(Depending on Drivers experience and sea conditions, guests can fall off into the water unexpectedly while driving or sitting on a jet ski. Persons 60 years and older should avoid Jet Skiing if not in strong good health!)
  • Have limited mobility issues or disabilities. (All Jet Ski Drivers and Passengers must be in good physical health with no mobility issues or disabilities)
  • These high-speed jet ski tours are not recommended for persons 60yrs or older.

Please Note: If a participant / guest arrives for a jet ski tour and does not meet the tour requirements, then that participant will not be able to go on the jet ski tour and their tour will be cancelled immediately with no refund given.

  • Jet Skis are meant to be driven fairly fast and at minimum safe speeds of around 35+ mph. These speeds ensure that your Jet Ski is stable in the water at all times and turns and drives smoothly and correctly when applying throttle/acceleration. If you have any doubt that you can drive a Jet Ski at these minimum safe speeds, then it is highly recommended that you go as a passenger and let another person in your party drive, so you will feel more comfortable while out on tour.
  • If you’re new to Jet Skiing or haven’t Jet Skied in a long time, don’t worry, we give all our participants a detailed orientation prior to their tour, and will show you how to operate your watercraft along with all the safety things you should know. (Our tour guides are also there to assist you and help all participants who are having driving difficulties. They will assess what you are doing wrong and give you tips and advice to get you up and running in no time, and take you from a beginner or novice user to feeling like an expert by the end of your tour!)
  • Jet Skis are easier to drive and get up to speeds as a single user (meaning with no passengers). All double person Jet Skis must not exceed a combined maximum weight limit of 375lbs. If going as a triple person Jet Ski, we only permit (1 adult and two small children), and the driver should have prior Jet Ski experience. Please keep in mind that the combined maximum weight limit for a triple is also 375lbs per Jet Ski.
  • Tours, routes and areas visited may vary depending on marine, weather and sea conditions.

Please Note: Jet Ski’s in general are meant to be driven at speeds of 35mph and above so you can better steer and control the Jet Ski on the water. First time drivers and persons who have not driven a Jet Ski for a long time should avoid carrying passengers that put them close to the maximum weight limit allowed per Jet Ski, which is 375lbs. Even though all our 4 Stroke Yamaha VX & Seadoo GTI Jet Ski’s are three seater models and are very stable with passengers, Jet Ski’s are normally more fun and easier to control especially for beginners and non-experienced users when driving as a Single, meaning with no passengers.

ADVENTURE TIME!

Join us for an exciting Jet Ski & Snorkel Safari which is 2 hours long and takes you to discover the best of Bermuda from above and below the water. This tour covers all the same things that our “Jet Ski Adventure” includes, but with the added time and bonus of snorkeling at one of our secret hideaways around the island. Unlike larger snorkeling boats, our jet ski’s can maneuver and go places that are secluded and private, and this is where some of the best snorkeling and reefs are in Bermuda. This tour is suitable for ages 4 years & older, all skill levels, and departs from multiple K.S. WaterSports locations.

Leaving the pier we head towards the Somerset Bridge (the world’s smallest drawbridge), and into Ely’s harbor. Ely’s harbor has many beautiful sites and things to see, and sometimes you can even see sea turtles, herons, and Bermuda longtails flying above.

From there it’s off to find sunken treasure, Arrh! Actually it’s the HMS Vixen, one of many shipwrecks found in Bermuda’s local waters, and sorry there is no treasure left unfortunately. This shipwreck is located just off of Daniel’s Head and is home to many types of marine life and coral species. Watch as hundreds of fish swim up to the Jet Ski’s whenever we arrive, a truly spectacular site to see.

Leaving the shipwreck, it’s off to a secluded reef area where we stop off to go snorkeling. Bermuda is surrounded by many beautiful coral reefs and shipwrecks, and has some of the best diving and snorkeling in the world. On good weather days you can see all the marine life and coral formations clearly below, a truly impressive sight to see. No prior snorkeling experience is required but all participants must be able to swim.

After spending some time exploring Bermuda’s underwater marine life, we throttle up and make our way back to the pier. This tour is perfect for families, friends, couples, and the solo rider who seeks fun & adventure on their vacation and who are looking to explore Bermuda’s underwater Marine life. (Jet Ski Tour routes and key areas visited may vary based on marine conditions, sea conditions and wind conditions of the day)

It is highly recommended that all JET SKI & SNORKEL SAFARI reservations be made in advance to avoid disappointment. Space is limited. (There is a 2 Jet Ski minimum requirement per reservation for this 2hr Jet Ski & Snorkel tour. If you have any questions please call our reservations number at (441)232-4155 and someone will be glad to assist you).

The Jet Ski & Snorkel Safari is available to Book Online or over the phone at (441)232-4155.

Tours, Routes, Areas Visited, and Snorkeling spots may vary depending on marine, weather and sea conditions. Alternate routes may be required. Participants must be at least 16 years of age (by law) to drive a Jet Ski. 4 years or older to be a passenger. All top-of-the-line snorkeling equipment and flotation devices are provided. (Guests are more than welcome to bring their own snorkeling gear if they prefer)

(Just for knowledge: Jet Ski’s in general are meant to be driven at speeds of 35mph and above so you can better steer and control the Jet Ski on the water. First time drivers and persons who have not driven a Jet Ski for a long time should avoid carrying passengers that put them close to the maximum weight limit allowed per Jet Ski, which is 375lbs. JET SKI F.A.Q’S

I see that you operate out of 4 different locations for your jet ski adventures. are there any differences in these tours.

Yes there are. Even though our jet ski tours are similar in length, they explore completely different areas of the island and provide a very unique and fun experience. Please click on the individual Jet Ski Adventures to see the full information for each Jet Ski Adventure or Jet Ski Safari. All our Jet Ski Adventures are excellent and provide a fantastic way to see Bermuda from a unique and fun perspective.

(We offer several types and lengths of Jet Ski Adventures which depart from our Dockyard, Southampton, Hamilton and St. George’s locations daily)

How long are the Jet Ski Adventures?

It all depends on which Jet Ski Adventure you choose. Our regular Jet Ski Adventures are 75 minutes long and our Jet Ski Safaris are 2 & 3 hours long (Meaning driving time and being out on the water). Customized, private and longer Jet Ski Adventures are available upon request as well and is based on availability.

How many Jet Ski’s go out at any one time?

Up to Six(6) rental Jet Ski’s maximum per tour guide go out at any one time. This is to ensure that groups are able to ask questions and hear what their tour guide has to say and wants to point out. We can accommodate larger groups of seven(7) or more Jet Skis upon request. We have the largest amount of Jet Ski’s (60+) available than any other Jet Ski rental company in Bermuda, which means more availability and times for you to get out on the water and have fun.

How old do you have to be to drive a Jet Ski?

By law, you must be 16 years or older to drive a Jet Ski in Bermuda. You can be any age (4 years and up) to participate as a passenger. All drivers who are under twenty one(21) years old or who look under the age of sixteen(16) will need a valid government photo ID or Passport for proof of age, in order to operate/drive a Jet Ski. All drivers 16 and 17 years of age must have a parent or legal guardian on tour with them and to sign off on their liability waivers upon arrival, in order to drive a jet ski on their own. No refunds will be given if someone twenty years old or younger arrives with no valid picture ID, ie. drivers license or passport only. (A scanned or printed passport picture/info page is acceptable too). No refund will be given if a minor 17 years or younger arrives for a jet ski tour without a parent or legal guardian to accompany them on tour and to sign their waivers.

Are there any restrictions which would prevent someone from participating on a Jet Ski tour?

Yes there are some restrictions for our Jet Ski Tours. Please see below for persons who may not be able to partake on our Jet Ski Adventures & Tours:

– Women who are 3 or more months pregnant. – Children under 4 years old. (Parents should ensure that children 4 years and above can hold on to the drivers life vest straps while sitting behind the driver in the passenger position) – Persons who have limited mobility. – Persons who have had any major surgeries or operations that could be affected from Jet Skiing the activity or a high-speed ride (i.e. back, knee, leg, hip, shoulder, neck or arm injuries/surgeries should avoid this activity unless given the okay by your doctor/medical practitioner) – Persons who have or who have had any heart related issues or seizure related issues. – Persons who weigh 300lbs or more (due to safety reasons) – Persons who do not have the strength to pull themselves back up onto their Jet Ski in a deep water boarding situation.

– Persons who have any hearing or vision impairments, or disabilities (due to safety reasons)

– Persons 60 years or older should avoid jet skiing and this activity unless they are in great physical health and have consulted with their doctor first.

– Persons must be able to hear properly and have good vision to operate a jet ski on tour. Hearing aids will get wet from minor splashing that can occur while driving or being on a jet ski, so please make sure that everyone in your party can hear properly without assistance or translating before signing up for these jet ski tours. Your safety and of others on tour is our top priority!

– Persons must have the basic understanding of the English language. Jet Ski Drivers MUST be able to speak and understand the English language fluently, no translating permitted. A detailed verbal safety orientation is provided to everyone by our staff prior to the tour departing. Our tour guides will also need to communicate with you several times while out on tour too.

* Please note that all participants will need to fill out and sign a liability waiver and safety card prior to partaking on any of our Jet Ski tours. Minors 17 years old and younger will have to have a parent or legal guardian sign off on their waivers at the time of arrival, along with accompanying their minors out on the jet ski tour.

Are there any weight restrictions to be able to operate a Jet Ski or take a Jet Ski tour?

The maximum weight limit (per person) allowed on a Jet Ski is 300lbs max.  The reason for this is to ensure that you can get back up on the Jet Ski safely if you fall off or are in a deep water boarding situation. Boarding a Jet Ski from the deep water can be very difficult for even persons 250lbs or over.

For all our Jet Ski & Snorkel Safari tours, the maximum weight limit per person must not exceed 250lbs.

For double person Jet Ski’s or triple person Jet Ski’s, (meaning 2 persons on 1 Jet Ski or 1 adult and two small children on 1 triple Jet Ski), the maximum combined weight limit allowed is 375lbs.  This weight limit ensures that persons can enjoy their Jet Ski adventure together and do not risk the constant battle of rolling over the ski and falling off over and over again, due to being over the 375lb maximum combined weight. Safety and fun is our top priority, and these weight restrictions ensure that all guests will have the maximum fun and adventure while on our Jet Ski tours. As a rule of thumb: The more passenger weight you add to a Jet Ski the harder it is for the driver to steer, control, and stay on the Jet Ski without tipping over or falling off into the water.

Beginners or persons who have not Jet Skied before or who haven’t Jet Skied for a very long time will have an easier and much better time and experience as a Single Jet Ski user – without any passengers, or as a double Jet Ski with a samller and lighter passenger on the back only, like a child or young adult.

Persons with experience driving a Jet Ski or who feel comfortable with driving a Jet Ski should be fine with a passenger on the back of their jet ski as long as they do not exceed the maximum combined weight of 375lbs.

Triple Jet Ski’s are only recommended for 1 adult and two small children (or) 2 adults and 1 small child as long as they do not exceed the combined maximum weight limit of 375lbs per Jet Ski.

Beginners and non experienced drivers should not consider renting a triple Jet Ski (meaning 2 passengers on the back of their ski). Triple Jet Ski’s can only be reserved by walk in or over the phone,  (Not online) .

Since this is a guided tour, are your Jet Ski Adventures & Tours slow or are they fairly fast paced?

Our Jet Ski Adventures & Tours are considered to be high-speed guided tours (35+mph minimum traveling speeds), but in no way are dangerous or unsafe at the speeds we travel at.

Our 4-Stroke Sea Doo and Yamaha jet skis can travel up to speeds of 50mph while on tour! With that being said there are many portions on the tour where we do have to slow down when entering bridges, narrow openings, shallow waters and during our stops.

The best way to describe if this Adventure is right for you is: if you are looking for a slow paced tour similar to the speed of what a tour boat or glass bottom boat would travel at (meaning under 20mph), then this is not the tour or adventure for you. Jet Ski’s are meant to be driven at speeds of around 35 mph or more for them to become fun, stable and to turn correctly.

What Experience do you need to participate on any of the Jet Ski Adventures?

No experience is required to participate on our Jet Ski Adventures. Beginners are welcomed. Instructions/Orientation will be provided to all participants and drivers before departing on their Jet Ski. Our tour guides will also be there to help assist you as well during the tour when needed.

Please keep in mind that for our Jet Ski Adventures and Jet Ski Safaris all drivers must be prepared to operate the Jet Ski’s at the same speeds as the Tour Guides and Group, and can expect to be traveling at minimum safe speeds of around 35-45mph while on these tours.

* These tours are not recommended for persons who have no experience driving any other types of motorized vehicles, and it is recommended that they should go as passengers when in doubt of being able to handle driving a Jet Ski at normal cruising speeds of around 35+mph.

I see you have 3 seater Jet Skis available for rent, why do you not recommend this option for novices or beginners?

Even though no experience is required to participate on our Jet Ski Adventures, beginners and novices should avoid having three persons on one Jet Ski because it can become extremely difficult to drive the Jet Ski and also risks you frequently capsizing and rolling over the ski, which is no fun for you or your passengers and could damage the jet ski. We only recommend 3 persons on 1 Jet Ski for one average sized adult (185 lbs or less) plus two children weighing less than 90lbs each. We like our customers to have fun while on tour with us, and this can be achieved better on a single or double Jet Ski normally. Please keep in mind that each jet ski has a maximum weight limit of 375lbs.

What should we bring to wear?

Generally you should bring a towel and a bathing suit.  It is recommended that you are wearing your bathing suit prior to showing up for the tour due to the lack of changing facilities at our locations.  Some other things to consider are waterproof cameras, sun block, sunglasses or swim goggles, and a small plastic bottle of water. It is not recommended to bring hats because they will not stay on during the tour. Sun tan lotion and glass beverage bottles are not permitted to be stored in our Jet Ski’s during the tour. We have dry lockable storage on our floating docks at all 4 of our watersports locations, which is suitable for small amounts of belongings and towels for when you return from the tour.

Can you accommodate larger groups?

Absolutely! We specialize in jet ski groups of all sizes big or small, and from multiple of our locations too. K.S. WaterSports has over 60+ jet skis in its inventory at any one given time, plus our equipment is always new or in fairly new like condition.

Do we have to take a guided tour?

Yes, it is by Bermuda law that all rental Jet Skis are accompanied by a tour guide in Bermuda. The guided tour however is a lot of fun and fast paced, and most people who are skeptical at first come back saying it was better than if they had gone out on their own. Nobody knows our island and waterways like we do, and we know all the best places to take our guests. Also from a safety stand point, Bermuda is surrounded with coral reefs that lie right below the surface sometimes and are hard to see, so by going on a tour with a tour guide will also ensure that you do not get into a situation and can just focus on having fun on the water while enjoying the gorgeous scenery and sites around you.

Are routes guaranteed on every Jet Ski Adventure?

As much as we would like to say yes, due to changing weather/sea conditions and colder temperatures in the early parts of the year, sometimes we must alter routes and courses of our Jet Ski Adventures so that our customers have the best overall experience. The tour descriptions and routes listed on our website is where we mostly take our tours when weather conditions are good, which in Bermuda is almost all of the time.

Do you offer any discounts or special prices for some of your Jet Ski Tours?

We do offer an early bird discounted price for some of our jet ski tours departing from multiple locations. Please see our website and tour times for special discounted tours.

Do you recommend your high-speed Jet Ski tours for persons 60 years or older?

This is a good question. Our Jet Ski Adventures and Safaris are available to persons of all ages 4 years and older, HOWEVER, if a person in your party is 60 years or older then they must be in great health and be prepared to keep up with the group and the speeds we travel at on tour, which is between 35mph to 48mph. With this said, K.S. WaterSports does not recommend their Jet Ski tours for persons who are 60 years or older unless they are in great physical health and have had no heart or respiratory illnesses, no back or neck injuries/surgeries, and no loss or partial loss of their vision or hearing. This recommendation is for jet ski drivers and jet ski passengers who are 60 years or older.

* Please note that persons 60 years or older should consult with their local doctor prior to signing up for or participating in the activity of jet skiing. If a person is not able to pull themselves back up onto their own jet ski from a deep water boarding situation unassisted, then please do not sign them up for any Jet Ski tours. Your safety and their safety is our top priority.

The Novgorod Kremlin, which is also called ‘Detinets’, is located on the left bank of the Volkhov River. The first fortified settlement was set here during the reign of prince Vladimir Yaroslavich, the son of Yaroslav the Wise. During these times, all the state, public and religious life of Novgorod was concentrated here. It was the place where people kept chronicles and copied the texts of books. The Novgorod Kremlin, the most ancient one in Russia, was founded here in the 15th century.

St. Sophia Cathedral (11th century), The Millennium Of Russia Monument, Episcopal Chamber (15th century) and the main exhibition of The State Novgorod Museum-reservation located in a public office building of the 18th century are all situated in the Novgorod Kremlin. The exhibition will tell you about the whole Novgorod history from ancient times to the present day. There are also restoration workshops, a children’s center, a library and a philharmonic inside the Kremlin walls.

Send a letter with the State Novgorod Museum-reservation stamp

While visiting the main building of the Novgorod Kremlin museum, you’ll see a small bureau near the souvenir area. Two more bureaus like that can be found in the Fine Arts Museum and the Museum information centre. This is the Museum Post, the joint project of the State Novgorod Museum-reservation and Russian Post.

The tradition to exchange letters (at that time written on birch bark sheets) dates back to the 11th century so it’s hardly surprising that such a project appeared here. The bureaus are desks and mailboxes at the same time, so you can send your friends a postcard with a view of Novgorod right from the museum.

Find the famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin among the figures of The Millennium Of Russia Monument

In 1862, 1000 years after the Varangians were called to Russia, a monument dedicated to this event was launched in Novgorod. To tell the story of Russia’s one thousand years, the sculptor used 129 bronze figures: from state and military leaders to artists and poets.

One of figures portrays Afanasy Ordin-Nashchokin, a politician and reformer who was responsible for Russia’s diplomatic relations in the middle of the 17th century. He is believed to be the father of international and regular mail in Russia. He was also the person who came up with the idea of the first Russian Post official emblem — a post horn and a double-headed eagle.

Cross the Msta River over the first arch bridge in Russia

The steel bridge in Borovichi town that connects two banks of the Msta river was built at the beginning of the 20th century. The project of the bridge was created by Nikolay Belelyubsky, engineer and professor of St. Petersburg State Transport University. This is the first arch bridge in Russia.

In 1995, it was included in the national cultural heritage register. More than 100 bridges across Russia were developed by Belelyubsky, but only this one is named after him.

Cast a virtual bell

When in the Novgorod region, you’ll definitely hear bells ring and learn about the Novgorod Veche Bell. During the siege of the city, tsar Ivan III ordered to remove this bell from the bell tower and send it to Moscow. Legend says that the bell didn’t accept his fate, fell to the ground near the border of the Novgorod region and broke to pieces against the stones.

In the biggest Museum Bell Centre in Russia located in the Valday town, you can see bells from across the world and learn why Novgorod bells are unique. The museum’s collection represents bells from different countries and ages, some of them dating back to the 3rd century BC. You’ll learn about the history of casting and modern bell-making technologies and also play games on a touch table. For example, harness virtual ‘troika’ (three) horses with bells or cast a virtual bell.

Spot the pigeon on the cross of St. Sophia Cathedral

St. Sophia Cathedral was built in Novrogod between 1045 and 1050 by Kievan and Byzantine masters. It was conceived as the main cathedral of the city, and during its first years it was the only stone building in Novgorod. So where does the pigeon on the cross of the cathedral’s biggest dome come from?

Legend says that while tsar Ivan the Terrible and his Oprichniki were cruelly killing peaceful city folk in 1570, a pigeon suddenly sat down to the cross of the city’s main cathedral. It looked down, saw the massacre, and was literally petrified with horror. Since then the pigeon has been considered the defender of the city. People believe that as soon as the pigeon flies away from the cross, Novgorod will come to an end.

Visit a monastery, that was founded by Patriarch Nikon

The Valday Iver Monastery is situated on the island in the middle of the Valday lake. It is considered to be one of the most important and picturesque orthodox shrines.

The monastery was founded in 1653 by the initiative of Nikon who had just been elected Patriarch. Nikon wanted the monastery to look like the Iviron Monastery on Mount Athos, including the architectural style and monk’s clothes. Legend says that Nikon saw the spot for the monastery in a dream.

Check out Fyodor Dostoevsky’s country house

Fyodor Dostoevsky, a famous Russian writer, first visited Staraya Russa town in 1872 during a summer trip with his family. They liked it so much that the next year they rented a house near the Pererytitsa River’s embankment and spent every summer here ever since.

Dostoevsky loved this house, called it ‘his nest’ and considered it the perfect place to work and to be alone. In Staraya Russa he wrote his novels ‘The Adolescent’, ‘The Brothers Karamazov’ and ‘Demons’. Today, this place is a museum where you can explore what Dostoevsky’s house looked like and see his family’s personal belongings, photos and letters.

Learn what Brick Gothic looks like

The Episcopal Chamber of the Novgorod Kremlin is the only non-religious German Gothic building of the 15th century preserved in Russia. You can have a good look at the facets of the gothic cross-domed vaults inside the chamber. This is why this building is also called ‘Faceted Chamber’ or ‘Chamber of Facets’.

The chamber was part of Vladychny Dvor, the place where all important city events took place: court hearings, gatherings of the Council of Lords of the Novgorod Republic, ambassador’s receptions and feasts. The seals of the city’s lords were kept here. The decree of tsar Ivan III on merging the Novgorod Republic with the Moscow State was first announced in 1478 in Episcopal Chamber. This is when the name of the new state, Russia, was first pronounced.

See the murals by Theophanes the Greek

The Byzantine Empire had a huge impact on the development of the Russian culture. Many works of art and architecture in ancient Russia were created by Byzantine artists and masters. Theophanes the Greek was one of them. He was born in Byzantine and created icons and murals in Constantinople and Caffa (modern Feodosia). After that he moved to Novgorod where he was commissioned to paint the walls of the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior on Ilyina Street. You can enjoy his unique and expressive style if you look at the murals inside the dome of the church and the Trinity side chapel.

The most recognizable and the only monumental work of Theophanes the Greek that is preserved today is the chest-high portrait of the Savior the Almighty in the dome of the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior.

Take a photo with an ancient Novgorod citizen who is learning how to read and write

In 1951, a letter written on birch bark dating back to the 14–15th centuries was found in Veliky Novgorod. Many decades later, in 2019, a sculpture designed by Novgorod artist and sculptor Sergey Gaev appeared on this exact site.

The sculpture portrays an 8–year old boy sitting on a stool and holding a piece of birch bark. At this age children in Novgorod started to learn how to read and write. During archaeological excavations in Novgorod, scientists often found ancient handwriting practice books and children’s drawings on birch bark sheets.

Feel like an ancient viking or prince Rurik’s guest

Novgorod is one of the waypoints of the famous trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks. The route passed through the Volkhov river. In the 9–10th centuries there was a fortified settlement of the Viking Age here.

Some scientists believe that Novgorod is named after this area which was called ‘Stary Gorod’ (‘Old City’) at that time. Some historians and archeologists consider this place to be the residence of Prince Rurik who was asked to rule the city in 862. That’s why this ancient settlement is called ‘Rurikovo Gorodische’ (‘Ruruk’s Old City’).

On the bank of the Volkhov river near the Novgorod Kremlin, there is an incredible building that looks like a spaceship and contrasts strongly with the ancient buildings of the city.

This is the Fyodor Dostoevsky Theater of Dramatic Art that was built in 1987. It is one of the most striking examples of the Soviet modernist architecture. The theater was built for 10 years according to the project of architect Vladimir Somov.

Buy a traditional embroidered tablecloth

A unique embroidery style that is now famous all over the world was born in the Staroye Rakhino village in the Novgorod province. By the middle of the 19th century, it had become a folk craft. Since then, linen tablecloths, towels and clothing items decorated with unusual ornaments have been popular not only among the locals, but also travellers.

In 1929, the first cooperative partnership of embroidery masters was created in Kresttsy. Later it turned into a factory that still operates today. The factory has a museum where embroidery traditions are preserved and new ornaments and technologies are created.

Find yourself in the Middle Ages

In the Middle Ages, Staraya Russa town could be called ‘the salt cellar of Russia’. That’s because salt making was the main trade here up to the 19th century. A few years ago, the old craft was brought back to life, and construction of salt works began. Later, an interactive museum was launched based on the results of archaeological findings.

This museum recreates a typical medieval manor of Staraya Russa of the 12th century with living rooms, a bathhouse, workshops, a livestock pen and traditional peasant household items. In this museum, you can also buy salt which is made in the same way as 1000 years ago.

See the place where Suvorov started his Italian campaign

Alexander Suvorov’s manor in the Konchanskoe village, which has now become the museum of the great commander, was originally the place of his exile. Suvovor openly disagreed with the reform of Russian’s army based on the Prussian model, and Emperor Paul the First didn’t appreciate such behaviour. He first fired Suvorov and then sent him away to his family estate.

However, the exile lasted for only two years. The great commander started the military campaign straight from his house in the Konchanskoe. During this legendary expedition, he crossed the Alps and defeated the French army.

Russian Post has launched a limited series of products dedicated to the cultural heritage of the Novgorod region.

In autumn 2020, Russian Post announced an open contest to create the design for its limited series dedicated to Novgorod region. The project was supported by the Government of the Novgorod region, ‘Russ Novgorodskaya’ (Novgorod Russia) project, the State Novgorod Museum-reservation and Yandex.

Stamps and envelopes are traditionally used to spread information about historic dates and figures and famous landmarks. Now we can also use parcel boxes, packaging tape and postcards. The limited series products will travel around the world, introducing the most popular Russian attractions to six million Russian Post clients daily.

The participants were to create the design for the limited series featuring three iconic attractions of the Novgorod region, the Novgorod Kremlin, the Millennium Of Russia Monument and the Belelyubsky Bridge in Borovichi. Moscow designers and graduates of the Higher School of Economics’ Art and Design School Alena Akmatova and Svetlana Ilyushina won the contest. Their project was chosen via an open vote and by the expert jury.
