Morgan Bobb

“Apart from doing my GRS Internship in Uganda, I completed a “study abroad” summer research project with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Rome, Italy.  I worked as a member of a team investigating the benefits of local animal genetic resources for rural livelihoods. Stationed at the international headquarters of the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in Rome, Italy, my team lived and worked together for the duration of the project. At the end of the project, we presented our research, a combination of each of our fields and reflective of large amounts of discussion, to FAO leadership. Our findings are being used as a resource for FAO’s initiative to recognize the importance of local animal genetic resources. Reflecting on this project, I learned more about health benefits that local livestock breeds can provide resource-limited households; I also gained an understanding of the complexity of economic and social interactions these animals have within the community. This greatly enhanced my GRS experience, and added considerable breadth and depth to the quality education that I had received in the classroom.”

Amanda De Carvalho

“The first word that comes to mind when I think about the GRS study abroad trip to China is, “amazing”. Not just because I was simply traveling to another country, but because the experiences were amazing. I learned so many things about farming. I met incredible people and developed some great relationships. It was a trip fully of knowledge, culture, and community exchange and a time of self-reflection for me. The China trip was an eye opening experience in regards to my future in sustainability and global resources.”

“I am studying abroad at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia where I’m taking environmental science coursework and a health class. I have been learning a lot about how Australia deals with topics in health and environmental science. I think that the most important thing that I have learned while I am here is what we are always taught in our globe classes that everything is connected–health, environment, social, culture, everything. I think this experience is helping me to be a global citizen.”

Jace Hadish

“The focus of my trip was to explore different perspectives of the food and agricultural industries in China and to better understand its role in this world. In the short time that I was there, my group was fortunate enough to visit many great restaurants, to visit vegetable co-ops, and even to visit a Cargill Broiler production facility. We were also fortunate enough to visit with college students, professors, facility managers, the Consulate General of the United States, and countless other highly intellectual and personable individuals.

For me, this trip has expanded my vision of paths and possibilities leading me to explore a career that incorporates my desire to tap into my passions of caring for animals, growing plants, seeing that people are nourished, and extending that into international boundaries. I am now more aware of challenges that I may face in this pursuit, including potential language barriers, the possibility of resistance from foreign governments and people, and navigating interactions with those who hold different values and ideals when it comes to producing and using resources that may apply to my life’s work.”

Business is global

The Ivy College of Business International Programs Office is here to help you explore the world while taking courses that count toward the completion of your business degree.

Picture yourself here

Our partner institutions around the world offer business classes taught in English that will transfer back to Iowa State University to keep you on track for graduation. You may also take an international study course during a semester break, traveling with and learning from an Ivy professor.

“My senior year began, and I had one more chance to go abroad. I had been waiting for this moment for so long that one or two weeks abroad would not be enough. With lots of help and support from my advisors, I found the perfect program in Rome. I was also ready to skip winter in Ames so an entire semester in Italy seemed like the best idea. Studying abroad is the experience of a lifetime! In what feels like the shortest semester ever, I have developed new skills and become comfortable with the unknown. In the classroom, I have learned as much as I do every day walking through the streets of Rome. I have grown so much, from moving to a new place and now calling it my ‘home away from home.’ The people, food, and amazing Italian views will forever live in my heart and be an exceptional part of my Cyclone adventure.” —Barbara Salas (’22 finance, entrepreneurship, and international business)

Get your degree

Transfer the hard work you’ve already completed to Iowa State University’s Bachelor of Liberal Studies (BLS) degree! Our flexible program allows you to choose from many online courses to craft an emphasis area that fits your professional and personal goals.

  • Request Information

The Bachelor of Liberal Studies Online might be right for you if . . .

  • You’ve progressed in your career and want to earn a four-year degree to continue advancing.
  • You’re a veteran or member of a military family who moved frequently and took classes at multiple institutions.
  • Completing your degree is one of your life goals. We’re ready to cheer you on and help you cross the finish line.
  • You need a flexible program that fits your schedule. Most courses allow you to complete the coursework at a time that works best for you each week.

The Bachelor of Liberal Studies (BLS) is a general studies degree that can help increase your chances of doing the work you love, or it will help you advance in the work you’re already doing. With assistance from a BLS advisor, you can choose between a  liberal studies major or professional studies major that meets your individual educational, vocational, or personal goals.

How will my previous credits apply?

Many of the credits you have earned at community college and other accredited colleges and universities can be applied toward the degree and can often meet requirements for the BLS. Up to 75% of the total BLS degree requirements can be transferred from accredited institutions. Students with military or professional and technical credits with outcomes contributing to the learning outcomes of the distribution areas of either major are encouraged to submit coursework for review to potentially apply such credits to the major.

Your path to graduation

All students seeking a BLS degree must meet the  University-wide requirements for graduation, including earning a total of 120 credits.

The Liberal Studies major requires coursework across three of five areas of distribution. Your advisor can help you choose what areas to emphasize, from communications and arts to natural sciences and computational disciplines.

The Professional Studies major requires coursework across four areas of distribution. Your advisor will guide you in choosing courses from focus areas in communication, leadership, technology, and critical thinking.

Start your application for the BLS Degree

To begin your BLS degree at Iowa State, you must meet the university’s admissions requirements and have completed at least 24 semester credits of transferable coursework from another accredited college or university. Additional details can be found in the transfer admissions information.

You’ve already taken an important step today by learning more about the degree. We’re ready to help you keep going and start your application.

Faculty-led Travel Courses

Choosing to develop a course abroad can seem like a daunting task. Experienced faculty tell us that it is an incredibly rewarding experience, but we also know it is a lot of work. We are here to help you make the process more manageable. We have years of experience and can draw from expert faculty leaders to provide you the guidance and the tools to make your program happen.

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences offers over 20-25 ISU courses in other countries each year. These programs are as varied as the faculty who lead them, but essentially include an on-campus component during the fall or spring semesters, with an international field trip during one of the university breaks (fall, winter, spring or summer). Travel ranges from 10 days to 6 weeks, with varying topics and credits earned. We have had ISU courses on all 7 continents!

If you are a returning program director and are looking for the faculty-led study abroad proposal, please visit the Education Abroad Committee website .

This section of our website has information to help outgoing and returning students prepare for their upcoming transition.

For Iowa State students travelling abroad, you will find information on selecting courses and transferring credit back, staying healthy and safe while abroad, what is expected of students when they travel abroad through Iowa State, and information on conduct and harassment.  There is also information on handling money, packing, traveling around, applying for a passport, and culture shock/adjustment.

As you return home, don’t forget to prepare for that transition! For some students, the re-adjustment back into their previous life and routine can be more challenging than the adjustment to their host culture abroad. This section of the website will provide you with information on how to use and talk about your international experience. You can also learn about ways to engage with the international community in Ames and share your stories with others. It won’t be long until you will be looking for your next journey abroad!
