This article explains how to use content blockers to block ads in Safari on iPhones with iOS 9 or higher.

Your phone must have iOS 9 or higher to use content blockers. Update the iPhone OS to ensure it has the most up-to-date version with current security patches.

How to Block Ads on iPhone With Safari

Using an ad blocker for your iPhone means your browser won't download ads. This usually means faster page loads, a longer-lasting battery, and less wireless data usage. If you don't want to see pop-up ads, there is a way to block these ads. Here's how to do so using the Safari web browser for iPhone.

Content blockers are apps that add new features that your default web browser doesn't have. These are like third-party keyboards —separate apps that work inside other apps that support them. This means that to block ads, you need to install at least one of these apps.

Most iPhone content blockers work the same way. When you go to a website, the app checks a list of ad services and servers. If it finds these on the site you're visiting, the app blocks the website from loading those ads on the page. Some apps take a comprehensive approach by blocking the ads and tracking the cookies used by advertisers based on those cookies' URLs .

How to Install Content Blocking Apps

To block ads with Safari content blocker apps, install the app, and then enable it from the iPhone Settings app.

Go to the App Store and download a content-blocking app to your iPhone. The example here is Norton Ad Blocker, but all ad-blocking apps work similarly. See the list below for other suggested apps.

Open the ad blocker app and follow the instructions to set it up. Every app is different, but each offers instructions to turn on the ad-blocking abilities.

On the iPhone home screen, open the Settings app.

Select Safari > Content Blockers .

Move the toggle switch next to the ad-blocker app you installed to On (green).

Choose an Ad-Blocking Plug-In for Safari

There is a sizable market for ad-blocking Safari plug-ins. The following options can get you started:

  • 1Blocker : Free, with in-app purchases. In addition to more than 50,000 built-in blocker rules, this app supports custom rules to block sites and cookies and to hide other elements.
  • Crystal Adblock : At $0.99, the developer claims that this ad blocker loads pages four times faster and uses 50 percent less data. This app also lets you opt to view ads on some sites to support those sites.
  • Norton Ad Blocker : This free ad-blocking app from the company behind the popular and long-running antivirus software also lets you add exceptions.
  • Purify : Grab this content blocker for $1.99 to block ads and tracking software. It includes a list (typically called a whitelist) to allow you to see ads on some sites if you like. According to the developer, after blocking Safari ads with this app, you can expect a fourfold increase in page load speeds and your web browsing data usage to be cut in half.

How to Block Pop-Ups on the iPhone Using Built-In Tools

Ad-blocking apps can block all kinds of ads and trackers used by advertisers. If you only want to block intrusive pop-ups, you don't need to download an app because pop-up blocking is a built-in feature in Safari. Here's what you need to do:

On the iPhone home screen, select Settings > Safari .

Toggle the Block Pop-ups switch to On (green), if it isn't already.

You can enable the Safari pop-up blocker on your computer, too.

The main benefit of blocking ads is that you don't see advertising. However, there are other key benefits to using these anti-advertisement apps:

  • Websites load faster : Ads are extra elements on the page that have to load, and ads often stream video or play animations. It takes time for the page to fully download and often causes other things like non-ad images and videos to take longer to display.
  • You'll be more secure : Many ads are vectors for malware. Infected ads hit a network, even a legitimate one, to disrupt your device.
  • You use less data : When you no longer see ads, you won't use your monthly data allowances to load ads. Some ad-blocking apps claim to save you lots of data. While their numbers may be inflated, you'll reduce your data usage to some degree because ad images and videos don't download to your phone.
  • A longer-lasting battery : Downloading ads, just like downloading anything in Safari, requires energy. One way to have a longer-lasting battery is to stop downloading so much data, which is what happens when you use an ad blocker.

Why You Shouldn't Block Ads

One downside you might encounter when you block ads on your iPhone is that some websites don't load properly. Some sites detect whether their ads load, and if ads don't load, you can't use the site until you unblock their ads.

Almost every site on the internet makes the majority of its money by showing advertising to its readers. If the ads are blocked, the site doesn't get paid. The money made from advertising pays writers and editors, funds server and bandwidth costs, buys equipment, pays for photography and travel, and more. Without that income, it's possible that a site you visit every day could go out of business. Consider supporting your favorite sites by whitelisting them, so ads on those sites still display.

By fine-tuning the ad-blocking extension, you can further enhance your browsing experience and ensure that it aligns with your individual preferences. Let's proceed to the next step and customize the ad-blocking settings to maximize the benefits of ad-free browsing on Safari.

Step 3: Customize Adblock Settings

Custom Filter Lists : Within the ad-blocking settings, you'll find options to customize filter lists. These lists determine which types of ads and content are blocked while you browse. You can choose from default filter lists or add custom filters based on your specific preferences.

Whitelisting : In some cases, you may want to allow ads on certain websites to support content creators or access specific features. The ad-blocking extension allows you to whitelist websites, ensuring that ads are displayed when visiting those sites while still blocking ads on other webpages.

Advanced Settings : Depending on the ad-blocking extension you've installed, there may be advanced settings available for further customization. Update Filter Lists : It's important to regularly update the filter lists to ensure that the ad-blocking extension is equipped to handle the latest ad formats and tracking methods. Most ad-blocking extensions provide an option to automatically update filter lists, keeping your browsing experience optimized for ad-free content.

By customizing the ad-blocking settings, you can take full control of your browsing experience on Safari. How to install Adblock Plus on Safari

Adblock Plus is finally available for Safari, albeit in beta form. You can install it in just a few clicks.

install adblock on safari ios

Ads are part of the Web, and something we are likely to never truly get away from. But that's not going to stop users from trying to rid browsing sessions from the (sometimes) annoying ads.

By installing plug-ins such as Adblock Plus (ABP), users are able to eliminate some of the more distracting ads on sites. Until recently Adblock Plus wasn't available for Apple's Safari browser. That changed earlier this month when Adblock Plus announced it was releasing a Safari extension in beta.

Installing the beta extension is simple and only takes a few seconds of your time.

First you'll need to visit this page on the Adblock Plus site. Not only will you find a link to download the extension here, but you'll also find a list of known issues and bugs. I recommend reading through the list to make sure you are aware of what behaviors to expect from the extension. Click on the big green button at the bottom of the page when you're ready to download the beta.

install adblock on safari ios

After the file is downloaded, double-click to install it. A warning prompt will show up asking you to confirm you do indeed want to install the extension. Click Install.

The extension will then be installed and an icon will be placed in your toolbar. Clicking on the icon will reveal stats for ads blocked, as well as link you to the settings section of Adblock Plus.

In the settings you'll find the option to whitelist some sites you don't mind displaying ads, as well as the ability to disable the whitelist Adblock Plus has already created. By charging some advertisers, ABP creates a list of advertisers that will still be visible. To disable this list, go to the first page of the Settings section and uncheck the box next to "Allow some non-intrusive advertising."

Going forward, any updates rolled out to the beta will be automatically applied, making the install process a one-time ordeal. If you find any bugs and want to report them, you can do so here

Best ad blockers for iPhone and iPad in 2022

1Blocker on iPhone 11 Pro

If you're tired of all the ads but don't want to use Reader View every time you surf the web, you can add content blockers to your iPhone or iPad, which will put them out of sight and help keep your activities private while you're online.

Ad blockers work in Safari and are only available on devices that support 64-bit architecture. In order to use an ad blocker after you've downloaded it, you'll need to enable it in Settings on your iPhone or iPad.

How to block ads on your iPhone and iPad

Here are the best ad blockers for iPhone and iPad.

  • AdBlock Pro

1Blocker X

1Blocker is really customizable. You can set different rules for blocking ads, trackers, cookies, website comments, Twitter and Facebook widgets, adult websites, and more. Plus, you can add your favorite sites to the Whitelist ( ahem , iMore) and block specific websites from access at all. You can also customize whether to block or allow cookies and page elements from specific sites.

1Blocker is free to download, but it's really more of a trial version. For a $4.99 in-app purchase, you'll be able to unlock the ability to use more than one feature at a time. If your ad-blocking needs are minimal, you'll have a great experience with the free download and just blocking ads or trackers. But if you're looking at 1Blocker, it's probably because you want the advanced features, like custom rules, a Whitelist extension for Safari, and iCloud syncing so your ad block settings are synced across all your iOS devices.

If you really want to customize your web browsing experience, and like the idea of being able to set up rules for different websites, the full, in-app purchase of 1Blocker is worth it.

Wipr

If you want a simple ad blocker for iOS Safari, then you should give Wipr a try. This lightweight blocker provides hassle-free blocking just by activating it. Wipr automatically updates itself to make sure that you don't see unwanted ads. However, due to the barebones simplicity that Wipr is known for, you won't find any customizable settings or whitelist options for the sites that you want to support. And best of all, Wipr does not take money in order to let certain ads show up, unlike some other ad blockers that have caused controversy in the past.

Wipr also has an active developer who is always available for support if you have issues.

How to Customize AdBlock for Safari

AdBlock

AdBlock’s Blog

We all know that AdBlock for Safari begins blocking pop-ups and other annoying ads the moment you install the app. But did you know it can do more than that? Every user is able to make AdBlock their own by using their allowlist to support content creators they specifically love, switching to Dark Mode if they prefer, and adding VPN features to up their personal Online Health score.

Support Content Creators You Love

Content creators and web publishers are a part of the internet ecosystem, with many of them relying on ad revenue to survive. Take YouTube creators for example. There are roughly 15 million active content creators on YouTube , with 500 hours of content uploaded to the site every minute. That’s a TON of content!

And some of these creators have monetized their channel so they can use ad revenue as their income to keep on creating. If you love a YouTube creator, it’s easy to allow ads on their channel while blocking ads everywhere else. All you need to do is pause AdBlock for Safari temporarily while you watch the creator’s YouTube channel.

To pause AdBlock:

  • Open the AdBlock for Safari app.
  • Click on Pause Ad Blocking.

When you click Pause Ad Blocking, the web page you’re on will reload automatically. It may take a few moments for all of the previously blocked ads to appear.

Once you’re ready to begin blocking ads again, follow these steps:

  • Click on Resume Ad Blocking.

Again, the page will reload automatically and without ads.

What if a publisher or content creator you love isn’t on YouTube? If there’s a website that you’d like to always allow ads on, you can add it to your allowlist. This will automatically turn off AdBlock whenever you visit that site while keeping ad blocking turned off everywhere else.

To add a website to your allowlist:

  • Under Allow ads on a site or page , click Manage .

3. On the next screen, enter the URL of the site you want to add to the allowlist in the textbox and click Add Website.

Once the site is added, you’ll see it on your allowlist. And if you ever want to remove the site from your list, you can visit your allowlist again and simply delete it from there.

Use Dark Mode

AdBlock for Safari comes with Dark Mode. This means you can use the app while reducing the amount of light coming from your screen without compromising on visibility. It’s perfect for those users that prefer darker shades as they use their Mac!

Monitor Your Online Health Score and Use AdBlock VPN

AdBlock for Safari offers a new feature called “Online Health.” Online Health allows you to see how healthy your internet connection is in terms of online security . With this tool, you’re able to have more control over your internet connection by assessing your health score. You can up this score by using both ad blocking and VPN features to ensure that your connection is encrypted, private, and safe from third parties.

To increase your Online Health score to 100%, you’ll need to integrate the AdBlock for Safari app with AdBlock VPN. Why? Because using a VPN is a great way to increase your online privacy. VPNs create a private connection between you and the internet by allowing your web traffic to flow through a secure and encrypted tunnel. This tunnel between you and the VPN’s servers makes it difficult for third parties to see what you’re doing on the internet. With AdBlock VPN, you can hide your online identity , access unblocked content based on location, and securely use public Wi-Fi.

We designed AdBlock for Safari so that you have more control over your internet experience. From supporting the content creators you personally love to helping you stay safer on the web, we’ve got you covered! If you’d like to try AdBlock, head to the Mac app store to download the app. And we’re here for you at [email protected] should any questions come up along the way.

I love iOS 15 but for some reason have been receiving so many extra tabs with pop up ads and it’s annoying. Many of these pop up ads are opening up ical directly to add some fraudulent link I hear extensions are supported for safari and am wondering if there exists some great solution so I’m not longer taken out of safari when using it.

I have been using adguard pro along with FF focus for awhile now. I don't think I ever get Safari ads. Unfortunately, ads within applications still come through though.

I use 1Blocker on my ios devices and Wipr on my Mac. I highly recommend both. Wipr, available for ios and macOS, is somewhat simpler to use - just turn it on, nothing else to do, no other settings. 1Blocker has a lot of customizations available as well as the ability to white list specific sites. Wipr has no white list option, the developer does not feel that is something that should be used so you have to use Safari’s control for turning off content blockers. With 1Blocker I’ve found that when having an issue on a specific site I have to use its “disable blocking“ control and not Safari’s. On certain sites using the Safari web site setting function does not completely disable all the blocking and I’ve still had issues until I pulled up 1Blocker’s controls.

I installed 1Blocker yesterday. And so far I’m impressed. It’s been the best ad blocking app I’ve used on iOS. I wish Ublock Origin was available for Safari on iOS. 1Blocker has blocked every ad in Safari, I usually see a lot of ad’s on MR, but I haven’t seen a single one since installing 1Blocker. Thanks to everyone in this thread who mention 1Blocker.

How Do You Block Ads on NY Times

If you are looking for ways to disable NYTimes ads to stay updated on current events — local, national, or international without distractions, then this article is for you.

Today (thanks to the development of the Internet) people have the privilege to access the news and updates from all over the world in just a few clicks. There’s no need to wait for the printing house to roll out a fresh batch of papers with bold headlines — you take your freshly brewed cup of coffee and leaf through the virtual pages on your PC. But there’s a catch. All modern media are monetized through ads or subscriptions. And mostly, even subscription-based news websites still serve ads. Luckily, you can avoid being bombarded with commercials and sneak through paywalls. Let’s see if New York Times without ads is even possible.

Types of Ads on NY Times

Use ny times ad blocker, how to block ads on ny times website, remove ads from ny times app on android, get rid of ads from ny times app on ios, how to stop ny times pop-ups.

The New York Times website features a variety of commercials that cater to different marketing objectives. It has banner ads (appearing at the top and sides of the webpage), interstitial ads (full-screen commercials that appear before the main content of the page loads), native ads, autoplay video ads, newsletters, etc.

Using its credit and reputation, the NY Times makes a pretty penny while providing advertisers with a large audience and diverse options to reach their target demographics.

install adblock on safari ios

So, yes, these commercials are LARGE. And annoying. Let’s talk about how to block ads on NYTimes in no time.

If you’re looking to block ads on NYTimes website, the number one solution is an ad blocker. You can use third-party adblocking software — extensions or apps. It is important to note that not every adblocker on the market is equally capable. On top of that, the NY Times website has a paywall and an anti-adblocker wall which are quite hard to avoid for regular adblockers.

install adblock on safari ios

Call it your lucky day, because we’re here to tell you which adblocker to choose to block ads on New York Times and sneak through its anti-adblock traps.

There are two software solutions to the ad problem that stand out from the crowd in the market: AdLock and uBlock Origin. AdLock is available as an extension for browsers and a standalone app for all popular OS, while uBlock is only available as an extension.

The difference between an adblocking extension and a standalone app lies in the technical possibilities of the software. Extensions are very limited by the environment they work in (browser) while applications have freedom for “creativity” (if I say so myself). Of course, extensions are sufficient for basic blocking ads on news websites, some social media, etc., but applications have a wider operational spectrum. For instance, AdLock works systemwide, which means it blocks all ads across your device — including all browsers, apps, and games. It will stop ads on New York Times on all your browsers and in the app.

The fastest and easiest way to block ads on New York Times is to download an adblocking extension from the respective extension/add-on store. Here’s how you do it.

Desktop (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, etc.)

  • Go to the Chrome Web Store, Firefox Add-ons, or Microsoft Edge Add-ons;
  • Type “AdLock” into the search field and hit enter;
  • Press the “Add to your browser button” and wait for it to install;
  • Then pin it to your extension bar for instant access;
  • Go to the Chrome Web Store, Firefox Add-ons, or Microsoft Edge Add-ons (depending on your browser);
  • Search for “uBlock Origin” and click on “Add to your browser button” (or similar);
  • Install it and pin it to the extension bar.
  • Similarly, go to the respective extension store for your browser;
  • Search for “AdBlock Plus” and click on “Add to Chrome” (or similar);
  • Complete the installation and restart your browser as needed.

A logical question arises “What about inbuilt browser tools?”. They usually do a decent job in blocking pop-ups and some ads, but the NY Times website also has a paywall gatekeeping you from reading articles. Browser features don’t remove it. And they won’t. Ever.

This is why you should consider using an adblocker capable of removing the paywall and not triggering the anti-adblock script at the same time. Get AdLock to disable NYTimes ads and paywall without a hassle.

Block Mobdro Ads with AdLock

To start with, NY Times offers a range of digital subscriptions for all tastes — cooking, games, all access, etc. Here’s the link where you can find info on every type of subscription they offer.

The “all access” sub will cost you $20/year but will only grant access to all content with some ads. Ads won’t completely perish.

Now, since classic browser extensions are not available on Android, you should consider these methods to stop ads on new york times:

  • Standalone ad blocker app;
  • VPN with adblocking features;
  • Tweaking the Hosts file (rooting required);

We will never stop insisting that you should not root your Android device unless you’re an experienced user, who knows onions. Otherwise, you may expose your sensitive data and/or let malware infiltrate the vulnerable device. This is very risky for a rookie Androider.

How to Block Twitch Ads on iOS

Although removing ads from the NY Times app on iPhones and iPads is not directly possible (due to Apple’s restrictions on adblockers within applications), there are workarounds.

  • Subscription (and yes, it won’t remove new york times ads);
  • AdLock or 1Blocker.
  • Reader mode for Safari.

Despite technical limitations of iOS that prevent adblockers from targeting commercials in the application, adblockers from the list above still block the lion’s share of commercials served.

As to the reader view on Safari, it strips away ads and other distracting elements providing a cleaner experience. This is not ad-blocking on new york times app, but if you like the website and don’t want to swallow all those commercials, you should consider this method.

To manage or stop pop-ups while browsing The New York Times (NYT) website, you can take several steps depending on your device and browser. Here’s how to handle pop-ups effectively:

Desktop Browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, etc.):

  • Open Chrome and click the ellipsis menu (⋮);
  • Go to “Settings” => “Privacy and security” => “Site Settings”= > “Pop-ups and redirects”;
  • Toggle the switch to block pop-ups.
  • Open Firefox and click the hamburger menu (≡);
  • Go to “Options” => “Privacy & Security”;
  • Scroll down to “Permissions” and ensure that “Block pop-up windows” is checked.
  • Open Microsoft Edge and click the ellipsis menu (⋮);
  • Go to “Settings” => “Cookies and site permissions”;
  • Click on “Pop-ups and redirects” and ensure the toggle switch is set to block.
  • Open Safari and click “Safari” in the top left corner of your screen;
  • Select “Preferences” => “Websites” => “Pop-up Windows” and choose “Block and Notify”.
  • Install and enable reputable ad blockers like AdLock or uBlock Origin. These can help block not only ads but also pop-ups on the NYT website.

Mobile Devices (iOS and Android):

  • Safari on iOS does not support traditional ad blockers. Use Safari Content Blockers like AdLock or 1Blocker. Both are available on the App Store.
  • Install an ad-blocking browser like Brave Browser from the Google Play Store. These browsers have built-in pop-up blockers.
  • Or, get a standalone adblocker application to get rid of ads systemwide.

Now you know that to stop ads on New York Times on PC you only need a reliable adblocker extension. But if you want a more sophisticated adblocking functionality and tracking protection, then you should get a full-fledged ad blocking app.

Sticking with a trusted product with a good reputation will help you solve a dozen problems in no time. Disable NYTimes ads in a snap with AdLock starting today!
