Joe Gatto is a comedian best known from the hit TV shows “Impractical Jokers” and “The Misery Index.” He has toured with the Jokers live comedy show to sold-out crowds across the world, including legendary arenas, such as Madison Square Garden in New York and the O2 Arena in London. Currently, Joe tours with his stand-up solo show “Joe Gatto’s Night of Comedy” in sold out theaters across the United States. Joe is passionate about supporting anti-bullying organizations and animal rescue initiatives. He happily advocates for the “Adopt, Don’t Shop” movement with his non profit Gatto Pups and Friends which operates on Long Island, NY catering to mainly senior and disabled pups. Joe also hosts a popular comedy podcast called “Two Cool Moms” on the iHeart Radio Podcast Network where he and his co-host dispenses sage motherly advice to fans who write in with their dilemmas. He also lives his life by a code of pastry and family, loving his wife, two children and cannoli.

Brian Quinn (Q), James Murray (Murr) and Sal Vulcano are the Creators, Executive Producers, and Stars of truTV’s hit series,  Impractical Jokers . Now in its 10th season,  Impractical Jokers  is a hidden camera comedy show that follows Q, Murr and Sal as they compete to embarrass each other amongst the general public with a series of hilarious and outrageous dares. When Murr, Sal and Q challenge each other to say or do something, they have to do it… if they refuse, they lose! At the end of every episode - with the help of a celebrity guest - the episode's loser must endure a punishment of epic proportions.

In addition to their top 5 comedy show on cable, and truTV’s longest running and top-rated original comedy, the guys have toured steadily over the last eight years with their wildly popular live show, performing for over one million fans in the US and UK, including six sold-out nights at Radio City Music Hall, a sold-out Madison Square Garden, and six sold-out shows at London’s O2 Arena. Natives of Staten Island, NY, Murr, Sal and Q met while attending high school and later formed The Tenderloins Comedy Troupe in 1999. What are the impractical jokers.

The impractical jokers are four comedians and lifelong friends who compete to embarrass each other amongst the general public in a series of stunts, pranks, and improv. 

Who Are The Impractical Jokers?

For years, it was Joe Gatto, James “Murr” Murray, Brian “Q” Quinn, and Sal Vulcano. Now, Joe Gatto has stepped away from the show, but the remaining three always make us laugh. 

Are The Impractical Jokers Coming To Western New York?

Yes! James “Murr” Murray will be holding a special event at Helium Comedy Club on Thursday July 13, Friday July 14, and Saturday July 15 with multiple showings available. And here’s the best part: “Murr” is looking for someone in Western New York to join him for the comedy performance!

It sounds like “Murr” is so excited to be in Buffalo, New York and having someone local be part of his show(s).

‘Impractical Jokers’ cast head to Radio City for live tour

The “ Impractical Jokers ” comedy trio known for their long-running TV show is bringing their banter and shenanigans to Radio City Music Hall on May 5 as a part of their live tour. 

Comedians and New York natives Brian “Q” Quinn, James “Murr” Murray and Sal Vulcano are best known for taking turns embarrassing one another on their hidden camera show full of public pranks and punishments.

As part of “ The DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE Tour ,”  they’ll continue that same light-hearted fun with story-telling, stand-up, exclusive video footage from the show and behind-the-scenes looks of their life on the road.

“Making ‘Impractical Jokers’ is the adventure of a lifetime for us, but it’s in touring that we truly get to interact and, dare we say, party with our beloved fans,” Quinn said in a statement. “Every single live show is a chance for us to play with and entertain the good people who have supported us all these years, and we love it

“Our whole deal is just about having fun. Like everything else we do, if it’s not fun, it doesn’t work,” Quinn told amNewYork Metro. “We don’t want to do anything that makes people think. Just come and laugh and shut your brain off. We’re not saving lives or anything but [fun] has always been the heart of things.”

Impractical Jokers has come a long way, according to Quinn. What started as a group of lifelong friends from Staten Island performing live improv and sketch comedy, grew into truTV’s longest-running original comedy series.

“The first time we saw the venue from the stage was when the curtain went up and man it was like two minutes of just looking at each other. We didn’t even speak like we just had tears in our eyes. It was pretty crazy,” Quinn said.

In 2021, the show took a pivot when one of the original members of the group, Joe Gatto, announced he would be leaving the group to focus on family. The remaining members weren’t sure what the show’s future would be at the time.

“To be back here now, it is pretty remarkable that we pulled it off,” he said. “We could’ve ended the show or started a different show. We couldn’t have not gone touring anymore but I love doing it. The writers and the crew are family to me and to not be around them would’ve been heartbreaking.”

On Dec. 31, 2021, comedian Joe Gatto announced he was leaving the “Impractical Jokers” after nine seasons with the show to focus on co-parenting his children with his wife Bessy.

He wasn’t done with comedy though.

Less than a month later, Gatto, 47, began pursuing stand-up.

On a cold January evening in Appleton, WI, he took the stage by himself for the first time.

“It was a small club,” Gatto told the New York Post. “I did 35 minutes that night.”

The Staten Island native was understandably nervous; up until that point, he was always part of an ensemble. Could he carry 100% of the funny?

Simply put, yes.

“It ended up being a great experience,” Gatto smiled. “I was mostly nervous about the new experience, but not so much about going for so long. It was more just this new format.”

After that set, Gatto was bitten by the stand-up bug and he quickly amassed an hour’s worth of material within roughly two months.

That led to nonstop road work where Gatto performed in all 50 states.

“Fargo, ND was number 50 for me,” the 47-year-old comic beamed.

And now, less than two years after his first gig, fans can witness Gatto on his newly announced, nationwide ‘Joe Gatto’s Night of Comedy Tour’ which includes a stop at New York City’s Beacon Theatre on Jan. 20, 2024.

“I’ve been touring for a while but I haven’t done stand-up in New York City yet,” he told us. “The Beacon will be the third jewel in the crown for me. I played Madison Square Garden and Radio City with The Tenderloins, and now The Beacon is perfect for my first solo show.”

Those aren’t his only NY stops in the near future though.

Gatto’s also set to drop into Rochester’s Kodak Center on Nov. 30, Ithaca’s State Theatre on Dec. 1, Poughkeepsie’s MJ Nesheiwat Convention Center on Dec. 3, Buffalo’s Kleinhans Music Hall on Dec. 27 and Utica’s Stanley Performing Arts Center on Jan. 25.

What is Gatto’s stand-up comedy like?

On the stage, Gatto is a storyteller.

“My material is made up of a lot of stories from my life growing up with the ‘Jokers’ and being friends in real life with those guys,” he shared.

“There’s also stories about growing up with a crazy Italian mother on Staten Island. She was a big influence on my life.”

He also loves to make light of his life as a parent of two.

“My kids are little hams,” he added before jumping into a story.

“The other day, my son comes home from school and says ‘You’re going to want to tell this to the people,'” Gatto deadpanned.

“What do you call a chicken that stares at lettuce?”

He paused for effect.

“Chicken caesar salad.”

“And with that, my son said ‘You’re welcome,’ got up and left the room.”

Still, performing comedy by yourself takes a toll on the veteran “Joker.”

“You don’t have the security net up there when you perform live by yourself,” Gatto explained. “If you’e not there mentally, you still have to carry yourself.”

“All eyes are on you,” he continued. “You’re talking for 65 minutes, making people laugh. That’s the biggest adjustment for me. You have to bring that energy no matter where you’re at.”

Will Joe Gatto return to “Impractical Jokers”?

Gatto got candid with our team when we asked whether or not he’d ever come back to the show he made his name on over nine seasons.

“I’ll never say never,” he told us. “You never know what the future holds. I will say right now, it’s not on my trajectory. I’m still friends of those guys in real life, but I’ve moved on from the show. The show has moved on from me. As of right now, it’s it’s not in the cards.”

Don’t worry though — the guys keep in touch.

“We check in with each other to see how life’s going,” he said.

Joe Gatto’s podcast “Two Cool Moms” with Steve Byrne

Since March 2022, Gatto has been recording “Two Cool Moms” with Steve Byrne , a podcast where the two comics riff on topics big and small.

However, the goofy show has been off the air since July of this year.

“The podcast will be coming back in the fall,” Gatto told us. “We got picked up by the iHeart Radio Podcast Network and have already recorded seven episodes with them.”

He’s excited about the partnership too.

“Being a New York guy, I grew up listening to Elvis Duran and I’ve been to plenty of Jingle Balls and Die Hard music festivals. I’m just huge fan of the people that work there.”

At most shows, Gatto brings along veteran comic Mark Jigarjian aka Jiggy to get the crowd going.

“Jiggy’s phenomenal,” Gatto gushed.

“He’s a seasoned stand up comic who opened for ‘The Jokers’ when we played our Madison Square Garden show. Just a great guy and has really helped with my material. I’ve been to his wedding, he’s been to my home.”

Life on the road

As noted above, one of Gatto’s major goals as a performer was to hit all 50 states.

And, after having been everywhere, he’s come to enjoy the simple things.

“My favorite part is going down the main streets, getting a cup of coffee, shopping local.”

Still, he makes time to play pranks since he can’t turn off wanting to mess with the people he loves.

“My best friend is my sister Carla. When I was in Alaska, I was sharing my location with her when I got to this animal sanctuary.”

While there, Gatto noticed an enclosure on a hill with a bear on top.

“So, I stood on my car and made it look like the bear was right behind me,” he laughed. “I pretended not to see it while taking a selfie video, saying stuff like ‘It’s so gorgeous in Alaska, wish you were here, you know?’ Then I turn around and act like I just saw the bear.”

“My phone lit up with messages like ‘Where are you?!’ and when I told her it was a joke she was like ‘You’re such a jerk!'”

As for the shows all over the U.S., Gatto meets a variety of audience members.

“At the beginning, there were a lot of ‘Jokers’ fans that came out so they could see me again,” Gatto said.

Other folks that show up know him from the podcast or are familiar with his Instagram which boasts over two million followers.

Still, he thinks most people come in the door knowing and liking him from the TV show.

“I wasn’t playing a character on ‘Impractical Jokers,'” he said. “I’m just myself and then they leave knowing more about me.”

In November 2022, Gatto and his wife Bessy formed Gatto Pups and Friends , a Long Island, NY-based 501(c)3 non-profit that advocates for the “Adopt, Don’t Shop” movement and facilitates adoptions for mainly senior and disabled pups.

“My wife Bessy is pretty passionate about dog rescue and has a soft spot for decrepit, falling apart dogs,” Gatto joked.

Even though he’s kidding around, the two are quite serious about helping older dogs.

“We just had our 45th adoption this weekend with Cinnamon Roll, a 13-year-old pit bull, such a sweetheart.”

The business is growing too.

“We’ve got our own vehicle, a storefront in Glenhead, our adoption center. We’re a part of our community. It’s been a big thing. It’s a real business. Bessy runs it really well and I really enjoy the work now that I have time to dedicate to the cause.”

NY cracking down on underage drinking at Syracuse amphitheater, more concerts

New York is cracking down on underage drinking at summer concerts, including at the Empower Federal Credit Union Amphitheater at Lakeview in Syracuse.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) said its investigators will be working with the State Liquor Authority, NYS Police, NY State Park Police, and local law enforcement for their annual Operation Prevent enforcement detail. Their goal is to prevent underage drinking by checking for fake IDs with sweeps at the Empower FCU Amphitheater, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, CMAC in Canandaigua, Darien Lake Amphitheater near Buffalo, and other popular live music venues.

“One of the pleasures of the summer season is the many outdoor concert venues New Yorkers can enjoy, and nothing mars a fun summer day more than a tragic crash caused by underage drinking,” said Mark J.F. “We urge all New Yorkers to take advantage of summer and all the fun activities in their communities – but please do so responsibly,” New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James added. “We will be working diligently with our partners to discourage and prevent the use of fake IDs and the needless tragedies that can result from underage drinking.”

According to the DMV, this year’s underage drinking enforcement sweeps will continue throughout the summer at venues across the state. If someone under the age of 21 is found to be using a fake ID or someone else’s identification to buy alcohol, they can be ticketed and their license can be suspended or revoked for a minimum of 90 days or up to one year.

Last year, DMV investigators cited 312 concertgoers and bar patrons for attempting to use fake IDs to purchase alcoholic beverages when they are below the legal drinking age. A total of 389 fake IDs were seized.

“Underage drinking can cause both short-term and long-term health issues, and it is important to do all we can to keep alcohol out of the hands of people who are under 21,” New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) Commissioner Dr. Chinazo Cunningham said. “This annual effort is a way for New York State to send the message that underage alcohol use is not safe, and it is a vital part of the ongoing prevention efforts across New York State. We look forward to continuing our ongoing work with our partners to address this issue and keep New Yorkers safe.”

Officials encourage New Yorkers struggling with addiction, or whose loved ones are struggling with addiction, to call the state’s toll-free, 24-hour, 7-day-a-week HOPEline at 1-877-8-HOPENY (1-877-846-7369) or by texting HOPENY (Short Code 467369).
