Harding Retail

At Harding Retail we're very proud of our long established history and our links down the years with the Harding family – our culture and traditions have formed an integral part of our philosophy as a retailer. Our company roots originated nearly 200 years ago by Sam Edward Harding who started a butcher's shop serving the community of Bristol. As a port city, there was a need to supply the many hundreds of ships that arrived each year and the business expanded into shipping supplies in 1930 with the formation of Harding Bros Ltd. by Sam's son, Percy Harding. The family connection continued when Percy's son, Michael, took over the running of the company, becoming one of the foremost suppliers of ships provisions in Europe.

In the late 1980's, Michael's son, Neil (the great grandson of Sam Harding and the current Chief Executive) saw an opportunity to introduce shops on board cruise ships. Through a series of successful partnerships (including the contracts for Fred Olsen in 1992, P&O in 1999, Cunard in 2002, Crystal Cruises in 2005, Seabourn Cruises in 2009), the business has grown to operate on-board some of the world's major cruise lines. These developments and other successful tenders were supported by the appointment of the current Managing Director, Harold Gittelmon, in 2003 and Chairman, Barry Gibson, in 2004. Harding Retail have recently had further success with the award of a re-tender over Carnival UK's P&O and Cunard fleets.

Our passion is retail... Our focus is innovation

At Harding Retail, we work with some of the largest cruise operators in the world, providing unrivalled retail solutions on board some of the world's most famous cruise ships. We never lose sight of our historic connections with the past, whilst looking to the future and our goal of continuous improvement and innovation, reflected in our personal and friendly approach and our outstanding partnerships with top cruise lines. Founded on the Harding family name and trusted since 1930, we work with internationally renowned consumer brands and products, available on board through our unique range of retail outlets. The Harding Retail portfolio includes nearly 200 shops on 57 cruise ships, working in partnership with 18 of the world's top cruise lines. As a premier on-board retailer, our business focuses on our clients, the cruise lines, and their passengers and guests – our retail customers.

Our aim is to provide an unrivalled on-board retail experience, showcasing brands, products and promotions that appeal to our customers, presented in contemporary environments with high presentation standards and underpinned by exceptional service. With offices in Bristol, Miami and Sydney, we are a worldwide business that embodies all that is exciting in the world of international travel and leisure.

Jobs at Sea – Harding Brothers Puts People on Cruise Ships

At WORKING ABROAD MAGAZINE we like to bring you the facts from the people who have done the job, so we spoke to Matthew and Isabel to find out about their experiences working on cruise ships through Harding Brothers …

“I had been backpacking for a year and was back at home and bored,” says Matthew Everson. “I still had the travel bug, though, and thought working on a cruise ship would be the best way of seeing the world and getting paid for it!”

Work in a Cruise Ship Retail Shop

Work in a Cruise Ship Retail Shop

That was two years ago and Matthew is now on his fifth ship, including spells on the Queen Mary  2 (transatlantic) and QE2 (world cruise)’ I went to P&O’s Arcadia as emergency cover for someone who had to transfer to another ship. I was only supposed to be there for three months but I was promoted to Assistant manager and ended up staying for a full six months!’

Matthew had worked part time at Tesco while he was at university and also had experience as a restaurant assistant manager and selling nuts, bolts and power tools at an engineering firm. Now he’s a shop manager responsible for selling fashion on one of the world’s most luxurious cruise ships, the Silver Shadow, and has had experience with most areas that Harding Brothers covers, including Casual and Formal Clothing, Fine jewelery and Costume Jewelery, Perfume and Cosmetics.

He describes a typical day: “On the Silver Shadow our opening times are a little different to the larger ships; we open at 9am until 12 noon then close until 2.30pm. This give’s us an opportunity to have a break, re-stock the shop or have a sleep. We reopen at 2.30pm until 8pm, and then again from 9.30pm until midnight. I typically will leave the office at about 1am after all the paperwork has been sent to the office. On a port day we open about 1/2 an hour after we sail, because we are not allowed to open in port. This typically means we are off duty and go ashore, unless you have other duties to do or are IPM (you take it in turns to stay onboard for safety reasons).”

Since working for the company Matthew has been to over 65 countries including Australia, China, Columbia, Japan, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, India, Vietnam, Singapore, New Zealand, plus most of the Caribbean, Russia and Mediterranean. (WOW!)

“Harding Brothers are very flexible and let you decide where you would like to go after you have completed your first contract with them,” he says. “There is a fantastic variety in cruise ships and itinerary. Shore side management is always very supportive if you have problems on board a ship and even when you are on leave.”

WAM: So what would he say to other graduates considering applying for a position with the company?

“If you enjoy travel, hard work, adapt very quickly and you can get along with people for long periods of time, then working on cruise ships is a great way to see the world, meet new people and experience things you would never normally get the opportunity to do, from helicopter flying to  husky racing, from sky diving to Great White shark diving!”

We also talked to Matthews colleague Isabel who always wanted to see the world. When she discovered the world of onboard retailing she contacted Harding Brothers – and so started her new career in 2005. She is currently Boutique Manager onboard the Silver Whisper now in the Mediterranean after wintering in Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Isabel joined Harding Brothers after working at Disney’s Epcot park in Orlando, Florida.

WAM: What do you like about your new life?

“Everyday is different, nothing is ever boring,” she says. “Everyday is a new adventure, someone new to meet, a new city to discover, so many exotic ports to explore. The view from our window changes every single day, there is no time to be bored onboard!”

Having visited every single Continent, Isabel just can’t wait for the next port of call.

“I usually go on a tour in the morning, which always takes us somewhere interesting; then I come back to the ship, collect some friends and go out for lunch. I love to try the local food, then maybe have a coffee or a drink somewhere in the port. After that it’s time to go back to the ship and get ready for work!”

Her shops open before dinner and then again afterwards until midnight. “The shop is always busy, busy, so the time flies by. After that a drink or two in the crew bar is always a must, and then tomorrow we’ll start all over again.”

For any graduate considering their career options, Isabel highly recommends working for Harding Brothers. “It’s a great experience on every level, professional and personal,” she says. “It’s a chance to grow, make many friends all over the world and learn a lot! The experience that you will have onboard – no other place can give to you.”

Euro 2024: Julian Nagelsmann as Germany's X factor

A n evening of Doner kebabs and a fully dressed Joshua Kimmich jumping into swimming pools – it's safe to say spirits are high in the Germany camp. Top of the group and contributing to a party atmosphere at Euro 2024 , it's easy to see why Germany are all smiles. One man who deserves perhaps more credit than he is getting is head coach Julian Nagelsmann. The 36-year-old was the face of Germany's young coaching generation. Now he has seamlessly transitioned into leading the country at a home tournament. Ironic then, that the man who has long insisted football is a players' game now looks like Germany's greatest X factor at Euro 2024. As Christopher Meltzer wrote in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung ," a new narrative has emerged with Julian Nagelsmann."

"He radiates incredible motivation. Julian has this great mix – on the one hand a relaxed tone, but at the same time everyone on the pitch knows: we're focussed now, we're concentrating on the game," said German FA (DFB) President Bernd Neuendorf in a recent interview with Spiegel.

"He has a high level of authority and acceptance."

It starts with a plan

At the start of the year, after a bruising period of experimentation to end 2023 , Nagelsmann found a style that works for this team. They play vertically, mostly with little width and they take risks. Then he found a starting 11 to best implement that and stuck with it from the friendlies in March , trusting his players to deliver. He picked in-form players, and either used existing partnerships or allowed time for new ones to form. Leverkusen's Robert Andrich and Florian Wirtz connect in midfield and attack, Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala know each other from Bayern Munichand Antonio Rüdiger and Jonathan Tah have quickly became the defensive pairing.

His squad selection for Euro 2024 built off that, moved away from the Bayern dependence that has hampered previous Germany squads, and reiterated how he wants to play. Surprise picks like Chris Führich and Maximilian Beier were selected so they could "stress" the opposition. Original selection Aleksandar Pavlovic , who has since been replaced due to illness, was picked because he constantly seeks the pass forward.

Aided by assistant Sandro Wagner, who played with some of the current group, and old hand Rudi Völler, Nagelsmann and his staff have communicated clearly to everyone what their role is, providing the team with structure and freedom.

"Julian gave a great speech when we first got together," said DFB Sporting Director Rudi Völler.

"He talked to the players about not being crushed by the pressure and spoke of it being a privilege to experience that pressure. Both he and the team, ahead of the first game at a home tournament, where the pressure was huge, handled it brilliantly and generated that atmosphere."

With style and structure clear, Nagelsmann has made sure he and his team can adapt. There is no denying the 36-year-old can read the flow of a game and acts accordingly. Against Switzerland , he adjusted his team's approach both in and out of possession, even if he struggled to get the better of the opposition.

"We sacrificed Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz for even more speed and risk. But nothing ventured, no point gained in this case," Nagelsmann said afterwards.

All of this sounds easy, but as other head coaches at Euro 2024 have shown, avoiding overthinking or forcing players into positions is not always as simple as it first appears. Perhaps Nagelsmann is benefiting from being at his first tournament, unburdened by the woes of the past and able to see more clearly. Perhaps, for a coach who was criticized as being too complicated at Bayern , he has been set free by the demands of the national team job. Whatever the reason, it is working and Germany are benefiting.

More than tactics

Nagelsmann has succeeded off the field, too. For a coach who often made bold sartorial choices at Bayern Munich, Nagelsmann has become more relatable in his current role. His dress more relaxed, his communication open, his passion on the sidelines almost palpable. He did not hesitate in calling the pre-tournament survey by a public broadcaster racist and he was full of praise for the way Germany announced their squad.

"Julian is a young coach, but has a lot of experience and is doing an exceptional job with his coaching," Völler said. The lows were so low in recent tournaments that in many ways the 36-year-old has already won. They are out of the group stage, creating chances and scoring goals in their own sun-soaked stadiums. Over 25 million watched Niclas Füllkug's last-minute equalizer vs. Switzerland on television. Even Mats Hummels recently said he has been "infected" by the atmosphere of it all. Much of the reparation is already done. Even a quarterfinal exit won't change that.

Nagelsmann said when he was appointed Bayern Munich coach that one of his guiding principles was to let his team "breathe with your air." There is no denying that this Germany team look like they are benefiting from the fresh breeze that Nagelsmann is currently delivering.
