General FAQ

Should we make reservations in advance.

Yes, most definitely. Jet Ski Tours, Parasailing, Snorkeling, Boat Rentals, Kayak Tours, Bike Tours, and Boat Charters are very popular, and during the peak summer months we have many visitors who seek fun and adventure on their vacation.

You should secure your reservation in advance to avoid disappointment.

You can book online your excursion, activity, tour or rental on our website 24/7, or call our reservations number at (441) 232-4155 between the hours of 8:30am to 6pm daily.

Our Dockyard Location reservations are handled by Island Tour Centre, who are only Dockyard Sales booking agents for K.S. WaterSports tours and rentals departing from the Royal Naval Dockyard location only.

Our K.S. WaterSports Hamilton, Southampton and St. George’s location reservations are handled by K.S. WaterSports directly.

Phone reservations:  When making a reservation by phone, make sure you specify which location and activity, rental or tour name you would like to book. Very Important!

We do provide a chat feature option on our website for questions and general enquiries. Also check our FAQ section on the website for answers to common questions.

Please Note: Reservations can only be made Online on our website 24/7, or by phone.

Why when I call the K.S. WaterSports Dockyard reservation number I get a representative from Island Tour Centre answering the call? Are you the same company?

This booking partnership was designed to give our guests an easier and simpler way to walk in and book their excursions, tours and rentals which depart from our Dockyard Cruise Port Location.

Our Hamilton, Southampton and St. George’s location activities, tours, rentals and boat charters are handled by K.S. WaterSports directly by calling (441)-232-4155.

If we have a tour or rental booked already at one of your locations, how soon should we show up before our scheduled tour or rental time?

You must show up at least a half an hour before your scheduled tour or rental time, unless otherwise stated on your reservation confirmation ticket / receipt! This is very important so plan accordingly and make sure you give yourselves plenty of time to get to our locations early. No refunds will be given to persons who are late, missed their tour or didn’t show up. Also please make sure you show up to the correct location for your tour or rental! See our locations page for information on how to get to any of our 4 locations, and please double check your confirmation email for details and check in times.

Boat Rental guests must ensure that they arrive 30 minutes before their rental time as this will guarantee that a K.S. WaterSports representative will be there on site to give you and your group their orientation prior to your boat rental departure. (If you’re group is running late then we will still require the driver of the rental boat to be at our facility 30 minutes prior to their scheduled departure time, to receive their boat orientation and instructions on boat safety and boat operation).  Very Important!

WaterSports employee can confirm a cancellation or cancel a tour or rental due to weather and within the 24hr or 48hr cancellation period . If a person does not show up for their scheduled tour time or rental time and the tour or rental can or does go out, then there will be no refund given to the persons or group that did not show. In Bermuda it can be raining one second and twenty minutes later the sun can be out shining, so make sure you show up at our location on time and are ready to go in case the tour or rental does go out. (For boat rentals, pontoon rentals, kayaks & paddle board rentals – it is recommended to call us 1.5 to 2 hours before your scheduled rental time if the weather is looking bad. The 7 Best Bermuda Rum Tours

goslings bermuda tour

The best way to elevate a tropical beach holiday is with a perfect sunset cocktail. And when it comes to the classics — piña colada, dark ‘n’ stormy, mojito, and mai tai — they all have one thing in common: rum.

Enjoy our top favorite rum tours on the spectacular island paradise of Bermuda, aka the birthplace of rum.

The Swizzle Inn

The Swizzle Inn Bermuda

Not a tour, but an island institution, The Swizzle Inn is an authentic Bermuda pub that is said to be the birthplace of the famous Rum Swizzle. As one of the oldest pubs on the island — opened in 1932 — the ambiance is a little touristy, but it’s worth the visit to road test a pitcher of the original Bermuda Rum Swizzle — Gosling’s Black and Gold Rum, triple sec, pineapple, orange and lemon juices, Angostura bitters, Falernum, and a local sweetener. Stop by after a day in the sun for a refresher, then hit Bailey’s Bay Ice Cream Parlour for their mouthwatering homemade ice creams in classic flavors and, of course, dark n’ stormy and rum (sans raisins) varieties.

The Bermuda Rum Swizzle Sip & Sample tour

Bermuda Rum Tours Swizzle

For an Instagramable experience with inbuilt rum buzz, The Bermuda Rum Swizzle Sip & sample tour offers the ultimate hop-on-hop-off bar adventure. You’ll stop at four different bars – to taste this local cocktail and rate which one does it best – while being treated to breathtaking ocean views before ending the fun at idyllic Hamilton beach.

Catamaran Cruise with Snorkeling, Paddleboarding, and Kayaking

Catamaran rum tour

If you’re in the mood for outdoor water sport adventures, the Catamaran Cruise with snorkeling, paddleboarding, and kayaking has them all on offer. This is a half-day cruise along Bermuda’s Great Sound with the island’s signature Rum Swizzle thrown into the mix.

Harbour Nights: Bermuda’s Weekly Summer Street Party

Bermuda Summer Street Party

Every Wednesday evening from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s Front Street, Harbour Nights is a seasonal tradition filled with eats, beats, and treats – at the far end of the street, you’ll find Gosling’s Rum company. Yes, all roads always lead to rum.

Bermuda Sunset Cocktail Cruise

Bermuda Sunset Cruise

Sway to the sounds of tropical live music while being enchanted by azure ocean hues and a stunning Bermudian sunset on this 90-minute Bermuda Sunset Cocktail Cruise that will have you back on land in time for dinner. Sip rum cocktails while nibbling on freshly baked cookies.

Then, head to a hip bar that happens to be home to one of Bermuda’s best bartenders before arriving at one of the island’s most beloved restaurants for dinner and dessert.

Bermuda Triangle Twilight Cruise

Bermuda triangle cruise tour

Not for the faint of heart, this thrilling Bermuda Triangle Twilight Cruise sails deep into the Bermuda Triangle. Goslings is Bermuda’s oldest company, family run for eight generations. The iconic rums are sold islandwide and available for purchase duty-free from the Goslings store on Front Street in Hamilton, The Rum Barrel in Dockyard, or at the airport shops. Infamous for the award- winning Goslings Black Seal Rum, a blend dating back to the mid-1800s, which is the largest export from Bermuda. Goslings began producing ginger beer in 2009 that has quickly become the No. 1 selling ginger beer in the United States. The Dark ’n Stormy® cocktail is now available ready to drink with three new flavours to complement the original: mango, pineapple, and black cherry. Goslings produces a range of liqueurs and rums that are exclusive to Bermuda; look out for the Bermuda Gold Liqueur made from local loquat fruit and the Goslings Silver and Amber Rums, exclusive to Bermuda. Limited-edition rums include the Goslings Family Reserve Old Rum, bottled in once-used Champagne bottles individually dipped in black wax, or the extremely rare Goslings Papa Seal Rum Single Barrel Rum. Goslings-branded merchandise is available from The Rum Barrel in Dockyard or Goslings on Front Street in Hamilton.

grab any opportunity you can to get on the water in BDA!!

That's what I'm sayin!!

I am interested in more info for this too - we are a group of 11, ranging from 13-70 (in fact, we are going for My Dad's 70th Bday). Is this sunset cruise appropriate for all ages ? (ie: no drunken party boat, LOL)

1,000+ Club

Participants must be 21 or older, according to the shore excursion info.

Never mind - I see you need to be 21 due to the drinking. I thought the kids might enjoy the sail with some juice instead but as there is a minimum age, we'll find something more suitable

Lol, I saw this thread & booked immediately.

Glad I could inspire you ;) Enjoy!

We just signed up for this, but I am curious -- does the boat depart from Kings Wharf or Hamilton?

King's Wharf

Thanks so much, Calmpets! I hated sounding ignorant, but both the website description and e-ticket made that sound very vague.

Any reviews from those that did this tour???

It was fabulous! The boat was docked right next to the ship. We saw a fabulous sunset. We got great photos. Definitely a party crew on board! Everyone was having a great time and the rum was flowing and strong!

did you book online???

We booked on My NCL

is it the sunset catamaran swizzle on ncl exursions???

We did the Goslings Sunset Cruise last year with NCL and it was a blast. You catch the boat right at Kings Warf so really easy to get to with little to no confusion.

The crew was a lot of fun and kept the atmosphere light and enjoyable while adding a few facts about how the rum is made.

They bring out sample after sample to try and if it's your birthday you are the proud recipient of a hat and a special glass of rum that you must drink in a certain amount of time or they refill the glass over and over.

The sunset was amazing and it makes for a great Kodak moment or two. They also give you the chance to purchase bottles of rum that you enjoyed during the tasting party. It ended way too soon but as they say - time fly’s when you are having fun! I'm sure you would enjoy it if you are a rum drinker

Gosling’s

Gosling’s is one of Bermuda’s oldest and most famous companies. For the best part of two centuries they have been produced one of the world’s finest rums and have had a major impact on the island’s cultural heritage. The story of their rise to success began just over 200 years ago in England and, like many great undertakings, owed much to chance.

At the start of the 19th century, William Gosling was a successful wine and sprit merchant based in London. He wanted to expand his business overseas by setting up a store in Virginia so he chartered a ship and filled it with a cargo of wines and spirits. In the summer of 1806 the Mercury set sail for the US with his eldest son William on board.

After over 90 days at sea, light winds meant the Mercury had failed to reach its final destination. As the charter period had expired the captain headed for Bermuda, the nearest British port, and unceremoniously dumped William and his cargo in St George .

William took a look around the island and noted that there was nobody in the wines and spirits business. On seeing the thirsty sailors of the British Royal Navy, he saw an untapped market waiting to be exploited. At the end of the year he opened a store in St George and stocked it with the cargo from the Mercury.

The business was a success and prompted Williams’s brother, Ambrose Gosling, to head to Bermuda.  In 1824 Ambrose opened a store on Front Street in Hamilton that still stands today. However, it was not until 1863 that they created the product that was to radically transform their fortune.

Rum was an extremely popular drink at the time. In fact, from 1655 all sailors of the Royal Navy were given a daily rum ration (the practice was only abolished in 1970). At the time the rum came from distillers in the Caribbean. The Gosling family spotted another opportunity and seized upon it.

Large quantities of sugarcane are needed to produce rum and Bermuda didn’t have the necessary land. Instead, they decided to import distillates from all over the West Indies and blend and age it themselves. After much experimentation with different blends, they created smooth, black rum that was named ‘Old Rum’, comprising distillates from Trinidad, Jamaica, and Barbados. At there was no bottling plant on the island, it was initially sold on draught only. Customers would take their own containers to the store and would fill them straight from the barrel.

In the years after the First World War, tourists began to flock to the island. To serve the new market Gosling’s needed to bottle their rum. The solution was to use empty champagne bottles, collected from the British officer’s mess, and seal them with black wax. With no labelling customers began to refer to it as ‘Black Seal’ rather than ‘Old Rum’. The name and logo were officially changed in 1950.

Gosling’s Today

Gosling’s today is still wholly owned by the family and is currently managed by the 7th generation. The rum is still blended and bottled on the island and the recipe remains a closely guarded secret, known only to company president Malcolm Gosling and the master blender.

The store on Front Street in Hamilton is still operation and is their main outlet in Bermuda. In 2007 they opened an additional outlet in the city. It specialises in wines and is situated at their old beer warehouse on Dundonald Street.

Gosling’s also operate the Bermuda Duty Free stores in the arrivals and departure areas of LF Wade International Airport .

Unfortunately, the relocation of the major cruise ship berths from St George to Dockyard, led to the closure of their branch in St George in 2008. Their store in Somerset closed in 2011. Until the last day of trading customers could still walk into the Somerset branch and fill their own bottles with rum straight from the barrel.

Visitors should note that any alcohol purchased and taken out of a store in Bermuda cannot be sold at duty free prices. Cruise ship passengers can purchase alcohol at duty free prices from the store in Hamilton but it needs to be delivered to the cruise ship. Gosling’s provides this service free of charge. Airline passengers can buy duty free alcohol on departure (and arrival) at the airport.

In recent years Gosling’s has sought to break out of Bermuda and transform the company into a globally recognised brand. In 2005 Malcolm Gosling moved to Massachusetts to facilitate this and the company now sponsors many major events in the US and elsewhere. They have also launched many high profile advertising campaigns, often light-heartedly referring to family traits and the unavailability of the products. Some of our favourites include:

  • Gosling’s – A legacy of stubbornness for seven generations.
  • Unavailable almost everywhere.
  • In 1806 the Gosling family left London for America. Last month they arrived.
  • Gosling’s Gold Bermuda Rum – New, luscious and widely unavailable.
  • Almost as hard to find as Whitey Bulger.

Gosling’s rums are now available in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, China and many other countries. A full list of distributors around the world can be found on the official website. If you can’t find a stockist near you, leave a message on their Facebook page and they’ll do their best to help.

Product Range

Gosling’s products currently on sale include:

  • Black Seal Rum – The original blend.
  • Gold Bermuda Rum – A rich, golden rum with a smooth taste.
  • Family Reserve Old Rum – The same blend as the original but aged for longer. Each bottle is labelled by hand and individually numbered. It’s a sipping rum best enjoyed with a cigar or chocolate.
  • Rum Swizzle – Pre-mixed cocktail.
  • Dark ‘n Stormy – Ready-made version of the legendary cocktail. Enjoy straight from the can.
  • Stormy Ginger Beer – Canned ginger beer, essential if you want to mix an authentic Dark ‘n Stormy.

Dark ‘n Stormy

Black Seal Rum is the main ingredient in Bermuda’s national drink; the Dark ‘n Stormy. It’s simple to make. Just get a tall glass filled with ice, add 4-5 ounces of ginger beer, top with 1½ ounces of rum, and garnish with a lime (optional).

It’s so named because the dark rum floating above the lighter coloured ginger beer resembles a storm in a glass. It was probably invented up at Royal Naval Dockyard in the early 20th century. At the time Royal Navy personnel based here produced ginger beer to raise funds for their events. At some point in time one of these sailors mixed the ginger beer with their daily rum ration and invented the cocktail.

Rum Swizzle

Another popular cocktail made with Gosling’s products in Bermuda Rum Swizzle . Like the Dark ‘n Stormy it’s served throughout the island, but the most famous place to sample it is undoubtedly the Swizzle Inn.

Gosling’s Black Seal Rum, along with Outerbridge’s Original Sherry Peppers, is traditionally added to Bermuda Fish Chowder to enhance its flavour. The chowder is served at most restaurants in Bermuda.

The rum is also a key ingredient in Bermuda Rum Cake, available in stores island-wide and at the Bermuda Rum Cake Company at Dockyard.

Bermuda Rum Cruises

If you are on the island and want to learn more about Gosling’s and sample some of its products you can take one of the Gosling’s rum cruises. The boat sails around the Great Sound while one of family members hands out samples and gives a talk covering the history of the company, how to make cocktails etc. Cruises depart from Dockyard and the Fairmont Hamilton Princess and can be booked through the Island Tour Centre (Fantasea).

Gosling’s Black Seal Rum: A Taste of Bermuda’s Rich History and Tradition

Gosling’s Black Seal Rum, an iconic dark rum hailing from the sunny shores of Bermuda, is a symbol of the island’s rich history and maritime heritage. This distinctive rum, with its bold flavours and deep colour, is a key ingredient in Bermuda’s signature cocktails, the Dark ‘n Stormy and the Rum Swizzle . In this article, we will explore the fascinating story behind Gosling’s Black Seal Rum, its production process, and the unique characteristics that set it apart from other rums.

The Gosling’s Legacy

The story of Gosling’s Black Seal Rum dates back to 1806, when James Gosling, an Englishman from a wine and spirits merchant family, set sail for America. After 91 days at sea, the ship made an unscheduled stop in Bermuda, where the Gosling family eventually established their liquor business. In the years that followed, the family developed their signature dark rum blend, which they initially sold in repurposed champagne bottles sealed with black wax, inspiring the name “Black Seal.”

Over the centuries, Gosling’s Black Seal Rum has become an iconic product of Bermuda, enjoyed by both locals and visitors alike. The rum is also protected by a trademark, which stipulates that only Gosling’s Black Seal Rum can be used in the authentic Dark ‘n Stormy cocktail.

Production and Characteristics

  • Ageing: Gosling’s Black Seal Rum is aged in charred American oak barrels previously used for ageing bourbon. The rum is aged for at least three years, but the final blend often includes rums aged up to six years. This ageing process imparts a rich, complex flavour profile and a deep, dark colour to the rum.
  • Flavour Profile: The rum’s distinctive taste features notes of molasses, caramel, and spice, with undertones of dried fruit and toasted nuts. Its smooth, full-bodied flavour makes it ideal for use in cocktails or for sipping neat or on the rocks.
  • Colour: Gosling’s Black Seal Rum boasts a deep, dark hue that comes from the ageing process and the molasses-based distillate used in its production. This characteristic colour lends the Dark ‘n Stormy cocktail its signature stormy appearance and name.
  • Distillation: The rum is produced from a blend of pot and continuous still rums, resulting in a harmonious balance of both heavy and lighter rum characteristics. This blending process creates a versatile, full-bodied spirit that can be enjoyed in various ways.

Gosling’s Black Seal Rum is more than just a delicious, high-quality spirit; it is a testament to Bermuda’s rich history, culture, and tradition. With its unique flavours, storied past, and iconic status as the foundation of the island’s signature cocktails, Gosling’s Black Seal Rum is a must-try for any rum enthusiast or anyone seeking a taste of Bermuda’s sunny shores. So, pour yourself a glass, sit back, and let Gosling’s Black Seal Rum transport you to the enchanting island of Bermuda.

Get to Know Goslings Rum: The Spirit of Bermuda

Get to Know Goslings Rum: The Spirit of Bermuda

words: Jonah Flicker

Not every country has a national cocktail, but Bermuda most certainly does: the Dark ‘n Stormy® . And just as the drink is intrinsic to the island nation, Goslings Rum is, too.

“It’s synonymous with Bermuda,” says Goslings Rum CEO Malcolm Gosling. Goslings is the island’s oldest business and has been a staple of Bermudian culture since it was founded by James Gosling in 1806.

Gosling says the aged black rum is even used in an island tradition called “roof wetting” where the roofs of new buildings are christened with a bottle of Goslings instead of Champagne. In Bermuda, roofs are important for collecting rain (the only source of drinking water on-island) and diverting it into cisterns for use by homes and businesses. Of course, the rum tastes much better in a cocktail than it does dripping from roof tiles.

These days, it’s rare to find a spirits brand that remains independent and family-owned, but Goslings is now run by the seventh generation, with five members of the eighth generation also working for the company. For Malcolm Gosling, this remains a source of pride. “Our name is on that bottle, and we’re going to do our utmost to ensure that we’re producing a quality product every time,” he says.

This award-winning product is Goslings Black Seal Rum , a blend of distillates sourced from several Caribbean islands (Bermuda does not have enough arable land to grow its own sugarcane). The Goslings recipe remains a carefully guarded secret, but the family says it has changed very little since its creation. The rum is blended and aged in Bermuda in re-charred ex-bourbon barrels from three to six years. This time spent in-barrel imbues the rum with its deep flavor and notes of vanilla, caramel, and dried fruit. And the island’s tropical climate helps to accelerate the aging process, as the heat and humidity maximizes the interaction between the rum and the wood.

Black Seal Rum on the bottling line at Goslings Headquarters in Hamilton, Bermuda.

Initially, Black Seal was simply known as “Old Rum,” and was sold to customers straight from the barrel. Starting in the early 20th century, the rum was sold in used Champagne bottles (a favorite drink of British naval officers at the time) and sealed with black wax. Hence the name “Black Seal.” A nod to this history can be found today with the premium expression Family Reserve Old Rum , an extra-aged spirit that is bottled in a black wax-sealed Champagne bottle much like the days of old. This decadent sipping rum uses the same recipe as Black Seal, but it’s aged between 16 and 20 years, putting this rich and earthy spirit on par with a fine Scotch or Cognac.

The flagship Black Seal can be used in a whole variety of applications, but it is a crucial component in the Dark ‘n Stormy®. The name of this iconic cocktail, a simple and refreshing mix of Goslings, ginger beer, and fresh lime, was trademarked by the company back in 1980. This year, in honor of the 40th anniversary of the drink, Goslings has established International Dark ‘n Stormy® Day, to be celebrated every June 9 here out. Sure, you can mix another rum with ginger beer, says Gosling, but it will taste different than the cocktail made with Goslings Black Seal Rum. So, if a bar or restaurant wants to call it a Dark ‘n Stormy® it should necessarily be made with Goslings.

Goslings plays an important role with the bartender community, which has embraced the Black Seal rum (and its lighter sibling, Gold Seal ) as a spirit that can be used in many different types of cocktails, including tiki classics like the Jungle Bird and the Mai Tai. It provides the right balance of depth and character that appeals to both novices and spirits aficionados. “Whether I am mixing with it on its own in a stirred or shaken cocktail or layering a mix of rums it always manages to add complexity with its depth and versatility,” said Erick Castro, “ Bartender at Large” podcast host and proprietor of San Diego bars Raised By Wolves and Polite Provisions . “The spicy notes of brown sugar and cinnamon that it brings to a drink are unmistakable and could not come from any other rum out there.” Castro is also a fan of Goslings Family Reserve Old Rum, but recommends sipping that rather than mixing it.

goslings bermuda tour

Brown spirits have been on a meteoric rise in popularity over the past decade, fueled by the explosive growth of bourbon. Drinkers are becoming more adventurous and crossing over into other categories, with aged rum being an obvious choice. “Bourbon allowed [a new] generation to experiment with other aged spirits,” said Gosling. He acknowledges that the rum category overall is a bit unwieldy because it is made in so many different countries, each of which has its own regulations. Goslings’ mission is to maintain a consistent standard of taste that consumers can depend on.

In 2019, Goslings introduced its ultra-premium Papa Seal Single Barrel Rum . “It’s dramatically different from anything we’ve ever done,” said Gosling. “It allowed us the opportunity to experiment with conditioning the barrel prior to aging the rum,” which is the most he will reveal about this special process. This extremely limited expression is aged for more than 15 years in the balmy Bermuda climate, with production limited to just 12 barrels annually. Goslings is now working on some other limited-release bottlings, like a special barrel-finished rum. “It’s sleeping as we’re talking now,” says Gosling.

As Goslings continues to innovate and look toward the future, it stands firmly rooted in its long history and tradition and continues to focus on making affordable, high-quality rum that can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or mixed into your favorite drink. Goslings Black Seal remains an iconic brand, not just in the history and culture of Bermuda, but, indeed, in the category of rum globally.

Goslings Rum

Over the years Black Seal Rum has become synonymous with Bermuda. It is an essential ingredient in Bermuda fish chowder, adds the island flavor to the Bermuda Rum Swizzle, and is the tempest in Bermuda’s favorite cocktail the Dark ‘n Stormy®.

The firm, known as Gosling and Son, was renamed Gosling Brothers. Three years later the first oak barrels of rum distillate arrived in Bermuda. After much experimentation in the blending process, the distinctive black rum destined to be Black Seal was formulated and offered for sale.

They didn’t call it Black Seal at first, in fact up until the First World War it was sold from the barrel, and folks brought in bottles for a fill up of “Old Rum”, so called because of its distinctive smoothness.

Eventually the black rum was sold in champagne bottles, reclaimed from the British Officer’s Mess, and the corks sealed with black sealing wax. Pretty soon people began to ask for the “Black Seal”. Many years later a play on words and images gave birth to the little, barrel juggling “Black Seal”.

Goslings Black Seal Rum was awarded the PLATINUM MEDAL at the World Spirits Championships. Scoring 96 out of a possible 100 points and recognized as a Best Buy, Black Seal was described as “superlative”.

This is the largest international spirits judging in North America, with all tastings sponsored by the Beverage Testing Institute, Inc. (BTI).

The judges said “Deep, assertive and highly flavoured. Very fragrant with herbal sharpness. At the finish there is a softness and elegance. A most complex, unusual spirit”.

Today, we continue to share the history, the product, and the happiness that has made our family business successful for eight generations.
