I Travelled To Gokarna For 3 Days In ₹7,000 Including Bus Tickets, Stay & Meals

I Travelled To Gokarna For 3 Days In ₹7,000 Including Bus Tickets, Stay & Meals

When we think of beach vacations, one destination that instantly comes to our mind is Goa. Being a go-to beach destination for many, with time, this hippie town has also emerged as a party capital of India. I love Goa too, but I also feel that over-tourism and extreme commercialisation has made it an overhyped destination. Gone are the days when beaches were all about calmness; now they are merely flocked by tourists. And like me, if you too miss the serenity of the beaches and the magic of the sunsets, then you must visit Gokarna.

Plan A Perfect Budget Trip To Gokarna

Nestled in Karnataka, this temple town is not only known for its pristine, less crowded beaches but is also known for its tranquil environment. Gokarna has the charm of Goa without the hustle-bustle of it. It’s a perfect place to unwind with your friends, gorge on some seafood and spend some quiet quality time by the sea. If reading this has already convinced you to plan a trip to Gokarna, then this budget itinerary is for you. I visited Gokarna with a friend last year in July for three days, and here’s how I planned it for ₹7,000 per person.

Transport: I took an overnight luxurious bus from Mumbai, and the two-way journey cost me ₹2,300. It took me 12 hours to reach Gokarna and from there another 25 minutes to my accommodation. My friend was from Bangalore, so she took a night bus and met me directly at Gokarna.

Stay: Hostel culture is quite popular in Gokarna. This beach town offers a plethora of hostels, homestays and BnBs that fit right in the budget. We lived in Zostel, which is nestled right by the Kudle beach. The property offers a majestic view of the beach, and in total the stay cost us ₹3,000, which is ₹1500 per person for 2 nights and 3 days.

Transfers: The best way to travel around in Gokarna is by renting a two-wheeler. We rented a scooter and paid ₹1000 for three days, which again is ₹500 per person. Apart from this, I spent ₹300 extra on transfers.

Tip: Rickshaws are available, but they are a bit expensive. So it’s better to rent a two-wheeler.

Food: Gokarna is well-known for its beach cafes. I spent ₹2500 on meals for three days. I was travelling with a friend, so the food costs were divided between us.

Tip: Do try the local dishes, they are affordable, filling and tasty too.

Best time to visit: If you don’t want to tan and want to stay away from the harsh rays of the sun, then consider hitting Gokarna between October- February.

Gokarna

However, visiting this beach town during the monsoon season isn’t a bad idea either. I went in July, and I must say with fewer tourists and affluence of flora, the beaches looked more sacred.

We reached Gokarna at 9 AM, and the scanty rainfall welcomed us in this beautiful town. After checking in the hostel by 9 30 AM, we rested for a while. Post that, we grabbed some lunch at the in-house cafe in our hostel. Cafe Mantra in Zostel is also one of the most popular cafes in Gokarna. Good food and chilled beer with a view of Kudle beach helped us start our trip.

Gokarna

On day one, we decided to keep it slow. We visited the iconic Mahabaleshwara Temple and were stunned by its Dravidian style design and architecture. After spending an hour at the temple, we headed to Kudle beach for the sunset. We enjoyed the serenity of the beach while the sun painted the sky with hues of orange and yellow. Later, we called it a night and headed back to the hostel for dinner.

We started the day early by 7.30 AM, and after having a wholesome breakfast at Cafe Mantra, we left to rent a two-wheeler. Our first stop for the day was Mirjan Fort, which is also one of the unexplored places of Gokarna. We spent 2-3 hours exploring the secluded fort, which was surrounded by lush greenery. We left from the fort at 1 PM and had lunch at a local joint which was known for its seafood.

Post that, we started our beach trek from the Kudle beach . Our trek covered Paradise beach, Om Beach and Half-moon beach. The three-hour trek had made us super hungry, and hence we visited the famous Namaste Cafe on the OM beach for a hearty meal. Our night ended on a high note with some palatable food and conversations with fellow travellers.

Gokarna

Tip: Namaste Cafe and local eateries don’t accept cards, so make sure to carry cash with you.

This was officially our last day in Gokarna. We woke up early, packed our bags and decided to make the most of the remaining time before catching the bus at night. We rode to Ankola and visited the famous Honey beach. While the beach was stunning, it was the scenic ride from the hostel to Ankola that we enjoyed the most.

Gokarna

We crossed some beautiful villages covered with coconut trees and the picturesque landscapes in the area, made everything look surreal.

Gokarna

On our way back, we stopped for food at a small kitchen owned by locals and savoured the famous fish fry and Bhakri. By 7 PM, we bid goodbye to the place and headed to the bus stand. I boarded the bus for Mumbai for 7 PM while my friend boarded the bus for Bangalore.

Gokarna

I honestly think that visiting Gokarna during the monsoon season was the best decision of my life. With fewer tourists, the idyllic beaches and pristine waters looked more tranquil. The rain Gods surely made travelling a bit difficult, but the lush greenery and delectable food compensated for it.

Things You Shouldn’t Miss Out On:

Since I had visited during the monsoon season, most of the beach shacks were not open. I also missed out on taking yoga lessons on Kudle beach, but you should definitely consider taking one.

Om beach sunset view in temple Gokarna

A small temple town named Gokarna is located in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. Gokarna is a Hindu pilgrimage destination. These days due to the advent of foreigners, hippie culture also prevails in this region. Additionally, if you want to dig deeper into Gokarna then you would probably require a travel guide or a local person.

It is one of the best offbeat places to enjoy your time peacefully relaxing and chilling on the beautiful beaches of south India along with a small touch of tradition and culture added to it.

This place has got so many things to offer right from nature, sightseeing, trekking, seafood. Beaches, temples, water, and other activities.

Goa is just a 3 to 4 hours ride from Gokarna( ie 150 km away) so a lot of people hop into this place. A contrast nature in the lifestyle of both these places can be observed clearly. Goa is more of life,  party, entertainment, and a little crowded compared to Gokarna which is traditional, peaceful, and relaxing.

There is the historical significance of this place related to Hindu mythology which takes us back to the days of Ramayana. We will get to know about the story in the paragraphs below.

Note : The word Gokarna means cow’s ears.it is believed that Lord Shiva emerged from the ear of a cow (mother earth) in this place, hence the name Gokarna.

Places to visit in Gokarna

These are some of the best things to do in Gokarna

Mahabaleshwar Temple

The temple was established during the 4th century CE and the main god worshipped here is Lord Shiva.

There is a small and interesting story of how this temple was originated: it takes us back to the Ramayana era. As a result, we can see a lot of religious people coming to this temple.

It is believed that the Srilankan king Ravana had performed immense penance to get “Atma Linga” from Lord Shiva as that would make Ravana very powerful and above all, no one can defeat him.

Lord Shiva impressed with Ravana gave him “Atma Linga” with an instruction that it should not be kept on the ground as it might lose its power.

Lord Ganesha played a trick on Ravana and made sure “Atma Linga” is placed on the ground in Gokarna. Ravana used all his might and tried to lift the “Atma Linga” but was not successful so he named Lord Shiva as Mahabala( one with great strength). The “Atma Linga” was called Mahabaleshwara and later after a few years temple was built.

One of the most famous pilgrimage place of Indians.

Never miss out on this place when you are visiting Gokarna.

This temple provides one of the simple and the best food to have with a touch of the authentic taste of that region. The temple food meals are absolutely free but you have to be present there at 1 pm.

The temple management gives free meals to a limited number of people.

Temple timings: 6 am to 12 pm and 5 pm to 8 pm.

Kudle beach.

If anyone wants to witness one of the most beautiful sunsets then you need to hop on to Kudle beach. Beach stretch with a cliff makes this place look very beautiful and picturesque. As a result, people always carry a camera along with them.

There are a lot of water activities like boat ride, dolphin spotting, and banana ride on this beach.

Best place to have your meal and stay. Kudle beach is less crowded compared to Om beach. Also, never miss out on a big glass of tea with a banana pancake and ice Nutella these things are very delicious and mouthwatering.

This beach is the most popular among the crowds and it is about 6 km from Gokarna’s main town. You can either trek or take a boat ride from Kudle beach to reach Om beach. The boat ride will cost you  10 TO 20 INR.

Om beach forms the shape of Om( a mystic syllable or Hindu symbol), hence the name.

The long white sandy stretch with small rocky structures makes it an amazing view. Sunset from this beach is a breathtaking view.

There are many fun activities like fishing, banana ride, parasailing, speed boating, etc makes this beach more entertaining and keeps people engaged.

We can find plenty of good restaurants and stays on this beach If you are a party freaky, you can find at least  1 or 2 parties at the weekend.

Half Moon Beach

This beach forms the shape of a crescent, hence the name. We can reach Half  Moon beach by trekking or boat ride from OM beach. Trekking from Om beach would take around 1 hour. It is a small beach with 2 restaurants, There are no stays available here.

We can’t find any water sport activities in this area, hence we can barely find any tourists here. This place is very quiet and peaceful.

Paradise Beach

This is the last beach among 4 major beaches present in Gokarna. As the name suggests it does look like a mini paradise on earth. The water and the beach here looks very fresh and clean. As a result, we can see plenty of people camp here overnight, the view of the sky with plenty of stars looks wonderful.

The beaches here are very deep so be careful if you are swimming.

There are no restaurants or stays here so always carry food and tent if you are planning to stay here overnight.

Nirvana Beach

Go for a night walk on the Nirvana Beach to witness the shimmering Phytoplankton’s which turn the sea blue and is caused by a natural phenomenon called Bioluminescence

Yana  caves

This is a small village in the Kumta forest, which is 50 km away from Gokarna. Yana caves are an unusual karst rock formation. Yana cave is a part of Sahyadri mountains of western ghats and surrounded by thick forest and streams. You need to trek for 3 km within the forest before reaching this place.

We can also find Vibooti waterfalls 8 km away from Yana.

How to reach Yana from Gokarna?

We can take a bus or a taxi from Gokarna. Yana comes in between Gokarna and Sirsi. You need to take a Sirsi bus from Gokarna and inform the driver where you need to get down because many buses won’t stop there without you requesting. The bus ticket would cost around 50 INR.

Mirjan Fort

This fort is located at a distance of 20 km from Gokarna. we can see architectural elegance and glimpses of the battle that took place in the Mirjan fort.

There are plenty of private and public buses are available to reach Mirjan Fort and it would cost 20 to 30 INR for a bus ticket from Gokarna.

You can even rent a bicycle, which will make us travel more responsibly and it would cost around 50 to 100 INR/ day.

Fort Timings: 8 am to 6 pm.

Things to do in gokarna, beachside trekking.

It will be one of the best trekking experience. we will trek through four major beaches Kudle, Om, Half Moon, and Paradise beaches along the cliff. You can either start from Kudle or Paradise beach. It will take around  3 to 4 hours to complete the trek. The difficulty level will be easy to moderate.

Best time to trek will be early morning or during sunset time, it will be a magnificent view from the cliffs. You can notice one side with lush green trees and another side with a beach; you can notice boats, fishing, lots of people swimming Sunset, and other activities while you are trekking.

Always wear comfortable clothes because sometimes you will have to do a little jumping here and there.

These are very easy treks so don’t spend much of money on guides.

Water Sports Activities In Gokarna

You want to take up any ride always be careful about scams because there are people who would charge 2 to 3 times the actual price. It is better to ask hotel managers where you stay, they will guide you in a proper way and sometimes even arrange everything for you at a lesser price.

Pro Tip; always bargain and ask many people before you take up any activity as some people try to charge a huge amount.

There are package activity tours available, it will reduce the cost

If you are good at talking a local language Kannada it is always an added advantage. Therefore, if you have any knowledge about the local language use it as much as possible. Furthermore, water activities in Gokarna for cheaper rates wouldn’t have been possible with the local travel guide.

Water Activities in Gokarna

  • Banana boat ride
  • Bumper boat rides
  • Speed Boating
  • Parasailing
  • Dolphin Spotting
  • Fishing Trips

What to Eat at Gokarna

This is a coastal region so seafood like prawns, fish, crabs are very famous. Beaches here are lined up with the best cuisines of the world like Indian, Italian, The Mediterranean, English, French, Mexican, etc along with local and authentic Karnataka style cuisines, hence you need not worry about food no matter which part of the world you belong to.

You can try prawn masala, pomfret fish fry, and Kingfish. The cost will be around 150 to 300 INR / meal based on what you order. Seafood is very good at Om beach.

Furthermore, you can eat at any restaurant in this area as it tastes the same in almost all the restaurants.

Never miss out on banana pancakes and ice Nutella these are very delicious and mouthwatering and it might cost around 100 INR.

Where to Stay at Gokarna

There are plenty of room stays, shacks, and a hostel in Gokarna. If you want to cut down on stay cost then you can opt for hostels. On average accommodations here might cost 400 to 500 INR / person.

Accommodation costs will be varying based on seasons.

Best Time to Visit Gokarna

You can visit this place any time of the year, it remains the same throughout the year. Maybe if you are concerned about heatwaves you can avoid summer from( March to May) as it is very hot. As a result, we can see a constant number of tourists and travelers coming to Gokarna.

The best time as per my suggestion will be to visit from December to February period.

For the people who are stuck up with their hectic scheduled work: who want to escape the actual reality of life and who wants to buy some time for themselves. I suggest these places gotta be on top of your list.

There will be a huge crowd during New Year and Mahashivarathri so avoid going there at this time. As you might not get accommodations and you might lose the sole purpose of visiting Gokarna .

Budget Trip To Gokarna within ₹4500 – Gokarna Travel Guide

How everyone wishes to travel but just can’t because of no leaves or limited leaves. I always thought this was a myth that there are no leaves in the corporate world. Fast forward to when I joined the same world all those myths became true. But planning a trip once a month I knew wasn’t going to be that tough. I started shortlisting the places nearby Bangalore which can be easily done in 2 days(come on you can manage 2 days in a month at least) and are also budget-friendly.

Gokarna Travel guide

The first thing that comes to my mind when someone says a vacation is a beach. When anyone hears of a beach there are only two choices most of the time, Goa or Pondicherry. But very few people know about a town called Gokarna which is located on the western coast of India. With its pristine, less crowded beaches and Gokarna beach trek it is a great vacation spot. This Gokarna travel guide will tell you everything you need to know about the place, how to save that extra buck and places to visit in Gokarna in 2 days.

What is the best time to visit Gokarna?

Gokarna beach trek

The best time to visit Gokarna can be in the months after the Monsoon which is from September October to March . But since people have been knowing about Gokarna in the last few years you might be able to see a good crowd. The months from April to June are quite hot but attract a lot of lesser tourists and could be one of the ways to save some money during the offseason.

Gokarna Travel Guide – Day by day itinerary

Day 0: How to Reach Gokarna

Gokarna travel guide

Starting my trip from Bangalore. Gokarna is easily accessible by bus and train. The latter is not an option because it takes a lot of time. But if you plan to go to Gokarna for 3 days train is the most suitable option to travel at least from one side. The bus price usually ranges from Rs 800 to 1200(sleeper) if booked a few days in advance. There are KSRTC buses which charge around Rs 500 but are seater. The buses are usually late in the night and you reach Gokarna early morning.

Day 1: Things to do in Gokarna on day 1

gokarna checkpost

Upon reaching Gokarna by 8 am there are two places the bus usually drops you. If you get down at the Gokarna check-post don’t ever take the left towards Kudle Beach as that is a longer route. Then you walk straight, the town is just 1km. If you take an auto to the town or the beach it will cost you a minimum of Rs200. But if you get down at the main bus stand which is in the centre of the town going to the beaches becomes easier. Don’t take the auto to the beaches as it will cost you Rs 100 for just a km. Instead, it is great to have a walk in the morning. If you don’t want to do the Gokarna beach trek then you can rent a scootie starting from Rs 300(more details can be found online)

Where to stay in Gokarna

graffiti in gokarna

As soon as you trek down and enter Kudle beach the view will take your breath away.  Staying in Gokarna is never an issue until it is a festival season. You could try a few of the beach shacks on Kudle or a few hostels on the way to the Kudle beach . They range from Rs 400 – Rs 600 per person. I stayed at Sea Rock cafe which cost me Rs700 for a night which can accommodate 2 people easily. The room is a cement block covered with wood on the top and you have a private washroom to yourself. The place looked decent and safe for women. The Gokarna beach trek connects all the main beaches of Gokarna and the town. Once we were settled in the shack we had breakfast there which cost us Rs 100.

The other stay option I’ll recommend to you is Zostel which is on the way to Kudle Beach. Zostel is safe for women travellers as well.

After 12 we left to explore the town and the temples. I wouldn’t bore you much with the history of the town, just that the Mahabaleshwar temple was built in the 4th Century. The Gokarna town is very small and can be covered on feet. Then we went towards the Gokarna beach, one of the most crowded beaches apart from OM beach. After relaxing on the Gokarna beach we had lunch at Prema Cold Drinks (permanently closed) . Which cost us around Rs 100 – Rs 150

Once we were done with the lunch we returned to the shack and relaxed.

Planning to stay for longer in Gokarna? Check this comprehensive Gokarna 3-Day itinerary .

Kudle Beach: The best sunset ever

Sunset at kudle beach

In the evening we took a dip in the Kudle beach and just sat there to experience one of the best sunsets ever. According to me, experiencing the sunset is one of the top things to do in Gokarna. In the night while going for dinner we found a lot of crabs on the beach so make sure to not stamp them. We had dinner again at the La Pizzeria cafe (Now known as Ganga Cafe) which cost us around Rs 250 – 300 max.

Gokarna travel guide

Day 2: Gokarna beach trek

Gokarna beach trek

We woke up early to check out the sunrise, though not being a morning person. It resembled just like a red ball. Never knew sunrise was also a great experience but sunsets still win hands down. After having breakfast at the shack which cost us Rs 100 we left for the Gokarna beach trek. The total distance of the trek is approx 6km. The beaches connected to this trek are Gokarna Beach, Kudle Beach, OM Beach, Half-moon Beach and Paradise Beach all at a distance of 1-1.5km. Carry enough water to keep you hydrated. The next stop was the OM beach. The trek starts from the end of Kudle beach where the steps will lead you to the other side of the cliff. The trek was moderately easy if you don’t want to trek you can take an auto/taxi. The next part was the descent towards Om Beach. I did find a lot of trash and garbage on the way.

Om Beach: Why is it named so?

OM beach

The beach is named OM because it forms two crescent shapes which result in the OM shape(Hindu symbol)

On reaching the OM beach we rested a while at the Namaste cafe which is too overrated and also very expensive. We didn’t have anything from the cafe and just relaxed on the beach. The waves were very wild here as compared to the Kudle beach. After going a little deep into Om Beach there is a sudden drop, so be careful who don’t know how to swim. One of the worst things I experienced here was the native people and tourists from India troubling the foreigners for a photo. Request to everyone, let the foreigners alone as they too are on vacation and wouldn’t want to be disturbed. The time is already 11 am. Here you can get ferries to Half-moon Beach, Paradise Beach and Nirvana Beach (Cost: 200 – 400 per person). We didn’t take the ferry and resumed our trek to the Half-moon beach. I also discovered a new point on the way to the half-moon beach( Om Beach viewpoint ) The trek is a bit tough and very dangerous at one point. So don’t look too much on the right as it is 60-70 ft deep.

Gokarna beach trek

Half Moon Beach: the cute beach

Half moon beach

The beach is in the shape of a half-moon and is named so. You will find very few people on this beach. Since the beach is very small, it is actually like a private beach with less or no people. Just behind the half-moon beach are the rice paddy fields. I was seeing rice fields for the first time this close to the beach. Crossing the half-moon beach there is another unnamed beach with a lot of black pebbles and rocks. There are 2 cafes on this beach so we decided to have our lunch in one of the cafes. They served some really good bread omelette or maybe we were too hungry so the total lunch cost us Rs 150.

Paradise Beach: The camper’s heaven

gokarna beach trek

The next stop was the Paradise Beach. The trek from Half Moon Beach presumes from the backside of the cafe we had lunch from. Upon reaching this beach I made up my mind to come here and camp as I saw a few people camping and it was one of the best and most peaceful beaches.

There are two parts to the beaches separated by a huge rock in between. There are only two local sellers here selling fruits. If you are lucky you can even find someone making an omelette for you. Visiting Paradise Beach has to be one of the top things to do in Gokarna. While returning it took us around 2 hours. We reached our shacks by 4:30 – 5 p.m.

Another sunset at the Kudle beach

Gokarna travel guide

After relaxing for some time and then we had our last meal at 6:30 pm at the La Pizzeria cafe. I know it’s too early but since the bus goes through a lot of hairpin bends it was better to have the meal beforehand. The snacks/dinner cost us Rs 300 approx. Before catching the bus we went to the temple and had prasad. The bus was at 8:30 pm and we reached Bangalore by 7 am.

So, thank you for your blog – something new I’ve learned today 🙂 Half Moon beach looks awesome 🙂 I have a question. In your conclusion you write “Don’t disturb the foreigners as they to are on their vacation and wouldn’t want to be disturbed”. Did you see some foreigners being disturbed? Am very curious to know the background of this story 🙂 Thank you!

Hey darja it’s my pleasure that I was able to introduce you to a new place. The disturbance caused to the foreigners was just they were being forced to take pictures and also stared upon.

Long weekends lined up in April. Confusion killing you? Goa vs Gokarna? Baga Beach vs Kudle Beach? Alcohol vs Weed? The two gorgeous destinations are akin in their wealth of sandy shores & azure waters, but who will win if they were to be pitched against each other? So who do you think wins – Goa or Gokarna?

Goa vs Gokarna: A Close Competition

While Goa has been a popular beach getaway for decades, Gokarna is joining the league and attracting travelers across genres. We might have a slightly unfair bias for Goa – the ultimate destination amongst young adults looking for beaches, waters, alcohol & parties. But Gokarna, is no less! A perfect getaway for couples & travelers seeking solace and tranquillity while they indulge in the serendipitous aura of the place is commendable. The only real way to find out is to have a look for yourself.

1. The Sea Shore

The sea shore of goa and gokarna

There’s no dearth of vast expanses of water and sandy shores in either of the destinations. While Goa’s coastline boats of some of the famous beaches – Anjuna, Baga, Calangute , Mandrem and more, Gokarna too has an incredible coastline with Om, Kudle, Half Moon and Paradise beach. Goa beaches are easily accessible and usually loud & crowded (of course based on the beaches you choose). Gokarna beaches are comparatively calmer, modest with less travellers.

Safety Tips for a Solo Trip in India

Safety Tips for a Solo Trip in Ind

While it is free to travel alone and not continually check in with others, make sure someone knows the phone numbers of the accommodations you’ll be staying at.

· Get an MTNL/BSNL SIM card for your phone if you are travelling to an area where your phone might not have service and are unsure of your accommodations because most locations do receive their signal.

· Always keep enough cash on you so that you may make it to a secure area if your luggage is misplaced.

· Keep your pack light when hiking so you don’t have to lug around extra weight. Going on a backpacking trip in a cooler climate allows you to reuse some of your clothing without getting sweaty and disgusting.

· When travelling alone, knowing a few basic words in the local tongue will be helpful, especially when engaging with the people. Knowing how to say “please” and “thank you” is also helpful since they may be used to request things more successfully, acquire restaurant suggestions, and other things.

· Solo travel makes it simple to meet new people. People with similar interests are drawn to one another. When you feel lonely in a strange area, start a discussion with others nearby. Making friends can help you overcome any travel phobia and allow you to meet new people going to the same place. It might also help you cut costs when you share cabs with people you meet.

Budgeting for a Solo Trip in India

Budgeting for a Solo Trip in India

Budget plays the most important role in how and where your trip is. Your major costs will be accommodation, transport, and meals. Usually, it takes Rs. 5,000-8,000 for a 3-4 day solo trip in India per city/destination.

Accommodation:  Choose hostels or guesthouses in the city. Dorm rooms will cut your accommodation costs – they usually start at Rs. 300 per night.

Transport within the Destination:  Use public and local transport facilities instead of taxis and cabs unless necessary. If you’re going shorter distances, you can choose to walk.

Meals:  Try eating at local restaurants and cafes or stalls. Blend in like a local regarding meals rather than going to expensive places for food.

Discounts:  If you’re a student, look for discounts at sightseeing places and transportation centres.

A transforming adventure, a solo trip in India offers the adventurous traveller a tapestry of encounters. As you embark on your voyage, you will be immersed in a nation brimming with rich culture, history, and varied landscapes. Several places to visit in India may satisfy any wanderlust needs. Many dimensions of India’s attractiveness are yet to be discovered, including its festivals’ exuberance, people’s friendliness, and the delectable variety of its cuisine. Beyond the sensory assault, a solo trip in India presents a special chance for personal growth as you explore the differences and complexity of this fascinating country.

Coastal Karnataka solo trip :) Mangalore - Udupi - Gokarna

Photo of Sree Harsha

A pristine beach!

Photo of Coastal Karnataka solo trip :) Mangalore - Udupi - Gokarna by Sree Harsha

After having read a lot about solo trips, the idea seemed very interesting and exciting. Having grown up in Bangalore for 25 years (the city which has given me everything), I hardly explored Karnataka.

With a recently bought beast (Thunderbird 350 :) ), a frustrating time at work because of people around me, being clueless on what next in career and life and with just a week before I turn 28, I thought it was the right time for a solo trip. The love for beaches made me choose coastal Karnataka. My parents thought I was mad to plan a trip alone and so were many of my friends. After convincing my parents, I started off on 17th Feb.

I started off at 4:45am from Bangalore with my luggage and tripod firmly tied to my bike. Though I have driven near my house for atleast a few thousand times before, the joy and adrenaline of going on the first solo trip made the initial ride a memorable one. It somehow gave me a feeling of a bird being set free.

My first stop was Mangalore. The route was Bangalore - Belur - Charmadi Ghat - Mangalore. Shiradi Ghat was closed for the "n'th" time post monsoon to carry out road work. I also stopped by at Shravanabelagola to witness the Mahamastakabhisheka. I then learnt that the first day was reserved for people who had booked months ago! With the disappointment that the first stop wasn't a good one, I slowly moved on..

Photo of Bangalore, Karnataka, India by Sree Harsha

A good breakfast near Hassan cheered me up and I was again all excited :) I stopped by again near Belur for a short photo session and played around for about half hour. After having a good breakfast and a good break, the sun was starting to show its full effect and I realized, I had to cover the route quickly. Next was another excited part of my journey, the journey through Charmadi Ghat and it truly lived up to my expectations. Greenery all around me and a cool breeze made me thoroughly enjoy the drive. I stopped by for lunch immediately after Chramadi Ghat at a small eatery.

Having taken another good break, I headed to Mangalore and reached my Airbnb booking at about 2 30pm. A quick shower and as I sat in the living room of the house, I started off having a conversation with the Airbnb owner. We were soon talking a lot about trips and little did I realize that it had already been 6pm. I had planned to catch sunset at a beach but I was late. Nevertheless, I was happy with the new things I learnt from the conversation. I set out for a walk and found a place (also suggested by my friend) called Pabbas in Mangalore. I would definitely recommend this place for any visitor to Mangalore for a good ice cream/sandwich/pizza or the unique ice cream pizza. I feasted on a good ice cream and went to bed happily having covered a good 400kms on day 1.

A good night's sleep and the excitement of exploring a new place, I was ready by 7am. I headed out to Sulthan Battery as it was the closest to my place.

Photo of Mangalore, Karnataka, India by Sree Harsha

The early morning ride in Mangalore was a very good one. A few pictures on my camera and I set out to Gokarnatheshwara temple next. I was lucky to see a wedding ceremony and a good darshan at the temple.

Photo of Coastal Karnataka solo trip :) Mangalore - Udupi - Gokarna by Sree Harsha

Next stop was Someshwara temple. This is the first temple I have visited on the edge of a beach on a small hill. I was in awe of the beauty of the location. I was again lucky to see a boat just return from the sea with a catch of fresh fish.

Photo of Coastal Karnataka solo trip :) Mangalore - Udupi - Gokarna by Sree Harsha

By now, the sun had again began showing it's full effect and my next stop was a small village called Thiruvail to catch up on a local event called 'Kambala'. Growing up in a city, I had never experienced the festive atmosphere of a village and it was a great atmosphere around the place. I reached the place just in-time for the semi-finals and finals. This was the event which was celebration time for farmers. A few fields were cleared off for this event and it was set up in an awesome backdrop of coconut trees, beautiful fields. Having captured the event on my camera (a sense of satisfaction), I returned to my room stopping by for lunch on the way.

Photo of Coastal Karnataka solo trip :) Mangalore - Udupi - Gokarna by Sree Harsha

I took a good rest of about 2 hours and went through all the pictures that I had clicked. I then called up my doctor friend studying in Mangalore and we decided to watch the sunset at Sasihithlu beach. It is slightly far from Mangalore and hence is not explored my many. This was the standout beach I had been to thus far. I was fortunate to capture the beauty of this place on my camera.

Photo of Coastal Karnataka solo trip :) Mangalore - Udupi - Gokarna by Sree Harsha

Both of us sat on the beach and caught up on what was happening in our lives. The small things gave me a lot of joy :) My friend then decided to better my day and took me to Bittu The Dhaba on NH66. Feasting on food and watching the first T20 between India and South Africa, we had a good time. I returned to my room and that was the end to my stay in Mangalore. I loved Mangalore a lot and took with me memories of a clean, green city and good people :)

The plan was to visit Moodbidri, Varkala, Koodlu Teertha falls, Barkahana falls and Agumbe sunset point for this day. I set out early again and Moodbidri was my first stop. The architecture of the temple was great and it was a calm, quiet place to be in.

Photo of Coastal Karnataka solo trip :) Mangalore - Udupi - Gokarna by Sree Harsha

Next stop - Varkala. Again, unique architecture and the calmness of the place was a treat to the eye.

Photo of Coastal Karnataka solo trip :) Mangalore - Udupi - Gokarna by Sree Harsha

Koodlu Teertha falls was a 15km deviation from the main road and the road to the falls was bad. After covering about 7kms, a person told that I couldn't proceed further as road work was going on and it would 2hours to reach the falls by foot. I decided to head back and inquired about Barkana falls. As the monsoon had ended by Septemeber, he told that there was hardly any water and suggested that I skip the place. My plan for the day was all of a sudden over as I didn't want to wait for another 4 hours to catch sunset at Agumbe. I decided to head to my booking in Udupi and reached there by 3pm. Disappointed, I lied down and began to check for places around me and I decided to visit the Kaup beach. I was at the beach for sunset and loved the time spent at the beach.

Photo of Coastal Karnataka solo trip :) Mangalore - Udupi - Gokarna by Sree Harsha

I was happy again and then decided to visit the Sri Krishna temple in Udupi. After a good darshan, I headed back to my accommodation.

The Airbnb where I stayed was slightly off Udupi in a village called Aroor. The owner's dad (a 70 odd year old man) took me around the village for a 5km, 1 hour walk. It was a beautiful morning and I had a nice time walking through farms, bridges on backwaters and spotting a few birds.

Photo of Udupi, Karnataka, India by Sree Harsha

I then headed off to St.Mary's island. This island is an example of how we Indians can maintain tourist places when we care truly! The island is very clean, less crowded and small. One can easily see 3-4 colors of water. I played around for about an hour and returned to Udupi.

Photo of Coastal Karnataka solo trip :) Mangalore - Udupi - Gokarna by Sree Harsha

I feasted on an aswesome lunch at Woodlands Udupi :) The heat and humidity was beginning to take a toll and I happily dozed off after lunch. What is this holiday for after all? I wanted to explore new places and relax. That is precisely what I did :) I got up after a few hours and went for an evening walk around the farms near my place.

Like all days of my trips, I started off early. The plan was to visit Kundapura Vinayaka Temple, Maravanthe, Murudeshwara, Mirjan Fort and reach my destination for the day - Gokarna.

The Vinayaka Temple in Kundapura is unique that Ganesha idol is in a standing posture rather than the usual sitting posture. After a quick darshan, I headed off to Maravanthe. I was fascinated from the time I read about the fact that a road separates Arabian sea and Souparnika river. I was hugely disappointed to see a huge bridge (disadvantage of the modern developments) separating the sea and the river now!

Photo of Coastal Karnataka solo trip :) Mangalore - Udupi - Gokarna by Sree Harsha

Disappointed, I headed on to Murudeshwara. The South Indian style of temples was evident here with a huge gopuram and a giant statue of Lord Shiva.

Photo of Coastal Karnataka solo trip :) Mangalore - Udupi - Gokarna by Sree Harsha

I went around this place for a while and then started off to the next place on my list - Mirjan Fort. This place is beautiful and people who love old monuments will definitely enjoy visiting here. I was the only person at the fort when I visited and spent close to an hour at this huge fort.

Photo of Coastal Karnataka solo trip :) Mangalore - Udupi - Gokarna by Sree Harsha

I then rested for a while under a tree and it was one of the best feeling on the whole trip. The locals then told me that Amit Shah, the BJP president was visiting Gokarna and advised me to reach Gokarna before he did. Otherwise, the traffic police would hold up traffic and like many times, a comman man would continue to suffer. I reached Gokarna by around 4pm and checked into my room. A quick shower, half hour rest and I was out again to enjoy the beaches of Gokarna. I thoroughly enjoyed a long walk on the middle beach of Gokarna.

Photo of Coastal Karnataka solo trip :) Mangalore - Udupi - Gokarna by Sree Harsha

There are many cool cafes on the beach and I selected Sunset Cafe for my dinner. I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner and the cool breeze blowing from the sea to land made the weather enjoyable.

I got up early to witness the sunrise and had a long walk on the beach. After a good and happy start to my day, I planned to visit Yana caves.

Photo of Gokarna, Karnataka, India by Sree Harsha

The ride to Yana caves was very nice with greenery all around and cool breeze welcoming me throughout. There is a small temple at the base of the caves. Being the only person in all of the caves, it was indeed scary to go around. I still managed to around and admire nature's beauty. After clicking a few photographs, I returned to middle beach in Gokarna.

Photo of Coastal Karnataka solo trip :) Mangalore - Udupi - Gokarna by Sree Harsha

I decided to have lunch in another cafe this time called Kariappa B Garden cafe. This cafe has good food and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. I spent close to 3 hours at the cafe, enjoying the weather and relaxing at this place.

Photo of Coastal Karnataka solo trip :) Mangalore - Udupi - Gokarna by Sree Harsha

I then set out to visit Om beach and Kudle beach. Again, the beaches were very clean and well maintained.

Photo of Coastal Karnataka solo trip :) Mangalore - Udupi - Gokarna by Sree Harsha

After enjoying the time at these beaches, I returned to my room and packed for my return to Bangalore.

I started off in Gokarna at 6 40am and Sirsi was my first pit stop. I would rate the drive from Gokarna to Sirsi as the best in my trip. Ghat section, sun trying to sneak through the dense green cover, cool breeze and with my Thunderbird raring to go, I completely enjoyed the drive. After a quick stop at Sirsi, in another 100 odd kilometers, I merged onto the Bangalore - Mumbai highway. Once I hit this highway, there was no stopping me nor my Thunderbird :) I reached home by around 4pm and that was the end to my trip. It was my first solo trip and obeying the traffic rules on the road ensured that I returned home safe.

I wouldn't tell that this trip has solved all my problems in life. It has opened me up to new people, the willingness to start a conversation and learning to be a lot more calmer. I also realized how scared I am in dark and lonely places. I regained the lost interest in my photography hobby and the love for farming increased many fold.

Travel responsibly, don't litter and drive safe :)

I would dedicate this short write, the first time I have written an article after I passed out of PU to my English teachers from school, CN Geetha Ma'm and Vasavadatta Ma'm.
