VENICE FREE WALKING TOUR

Let's unmask Venice with local guides!

Our "free-tours concept" are based solely on donations .

The JM Walkingtour project is dedicated to all those who, thanks to our guided visits, wish to get to know the cities and at the same time contribute to the fundraising for the removal of architectural barriers which hamper the day-to-day life of people with disabilities.

Our volunteers are authorized no-profit guides and carry out their tasks for free, in favor of all those joining the program; the love for their own city and their art-historical competences make our tours unique.

We are strongly convinced, and this is why at the end of the tour we will ask you for a donation , that a remuneration in exchange for a bit of extra knowledge would be fair and gratifying for all. Thank you for your generous contribution.

Due of its peculiarity, this tour is NOT suitable for people with reduced motor skills . You may book the alternative free from architectural barriers itinerary on our website by clicking on the item "Accessible Tour".

Venice free walking tour presentation.

Venice counts more than 400 bridges which connect its several little islands between them, giving shape to the city itself, it alternates chaotic areas to incredibly calm ones. Venice is a millenary city, unique in its genre , it is so rich of monuments and art pieces that only our local guides can give you the chance to discover.

Guided through narrow calli and marvelous campielli, towards the discovery of another side of Venice, the more picturesque one, the one of its inhabitants, far from the always crowded main touristic attractions, but equally important on a historical and cultural level, we will introduce you to the real story of the most beautiful city in the world .

It is not easy to discover this side of Venice on your own because the city is like a small labyrinth where it is very easy to get lost and no one can even imagine how many things there are be discover in addition to the generally known spots.

The beauty of this tour is that you will discover the curiosities, the anecdotes and the amusing events in an informal way , by interacting with the other participants, stimulated by the questions raised by the guide, in which you will not only find the answers related to the history of the glorious “Serenissima”, but also to the contemporary and daily life of the inhabitants living in this unique city, in their own unique way.

JM is a walking tour that differs from the others because our local guides, besides from the historical notions, can give you some advice on how to fully live the city, exactly in the same way a local inhabitant would live it, with it amusements, its wineries, the religious and local neighborhood celebrations, the popular restaurants and also many eno-gastronomical advice. In short, all that which is needed in order to go back home with a unique and unforgettable memory of Venice .

You will find the meeting point written down on the electronic ticket you will receive in the moment of your registration.

How does Venice Walking Tour work?

Please arrive 15 minutes early , so that we may start the visit on time.

During our tour there will be a 10 minutes coffee break . We suggest to wear comfortable clothes, depending on the season, to wear trainer shoes and to carry a bottle of water with you.

Do not forget to bring an umbrella in the event of rain or sun during hot summer days.

The itinerary may vary due to weather conditions.

The tour takes place through narrow calli and bridges and given its peculiarity it is suitable for young people or dynamic adults . If kept on a leash, four-legged friends are welcome.

The tour will take place exclusively on foot , it lasts about two hours and may include a maximum of 20 participants.

The tour will end in a different place from the meeting point and your guide will give you the directions to get back to the starting point.

In order to make the most out of our suggestions, we suggest to attend the JM tour at the beginning of your stay.

The Top 10 Free Things to Do in Venice, Italy

Renaissance architecture, free museums, and stunning churches abound

free tour venice

 Lara D'Agostino / TripSavvy

One of the most unique cities in Italy, Venice is made up of 100 small islands and home to shining examples of Renaissance and Gothic architecture, world-class museums , and nearly 200 churches. Best of all, there's no need to spend a lot of money in Venice as many of the city's best activities—like walking along the canals and admiring the beautiful squares and colorful buildings—are free. Composed of six sestere (districts), the City of Canals is easily navigable on foot. Simply pick your favorite neighborhood and take a stroll.

Wandering the canal-side streets is a pleasurable (and free) past-time, with more than 150 canals to choose from, lined with old houses and varying in size from the great main thoroughfare of the Grand Canal to tiny canals that are barely accessible to small boats. You're likely to get a little lost but it's all part of the charm of Venice. For a real treat, park yourself by one of the more than 400 bridges that criss cross the canals or head to the Grand Canal to watch the gondolas, larger boats, and water buses make their way around town.

Get the Best Views in Venice

Christopher Larson / TripSavvy

From the moment you arrive in Venice—whether by train, bus, or boat—you're bound to be in absolute awe of all the colorful buildings and canal scenes around you. For the best photo-ops in the city, head to Accademia Bridge, Piazza San Marco , or the Bridge of Sighs, named for the last time prisoners were able to view the city and enjoy fresh air as they made their way across from the courts to the prison. For iconic views of the city, venture out to San Giorgio Maggiore Church, a beautiful 16th-century Byzantine-style basilica that's also home to Tintoretto's "Last Supper" painting. For more information and to see other scenic points around the city with a guide by your side, consider going on a free walking tour .

Take a Break in the Royal Gardens of Venice

Elliott Brown / Flickr

If the crowds or heat get to be too much, seek some respite among the trees in Giardini Reali di Venezia (the Royal Gardens of Venice), located just around the corner from Piazza San Marco along the Grand Canal. The ultimate place to take a break in Venice since it was constructed in the early 1800s, you'll notice it's oddly quiet here despite its proximity to such popular sites and attractions. Note that eating and drinking are not allowed ( according to the website , picnics are forbidden) so bring a book along or just go for a peaceful stroll and enjoy the outdoors.

People-watch at Piazza San Marco and Campo Santa Maria Formosa

Flanked by elegant historic buildings and expensive cafes, many of which offer live music in the evening, Piazza San Marco (Saint Mark's Square) is one of the main tourist destinations in Venice. While you'll be able to hear the music for free as you walk around, actually sitting at a table and ordering is usually very expensive. Take a peek at the famous Caffè Florian, popular since 1720, and stop by Basilica San Marco (Saint Mark's Cathedral), an impressive church built in the Byzantine style.

Nearby, Campo Santa Maria Formosa in the Castello neighborhood is one of the largest campos (squares) in the city, surrounded by an interesting collection of palazzi proudly showing off the city's unique architectural styles. Each district has at least one major campo. It's where you'll find most churches; these areas often serve as the neighborhood gathering place and often make great spots for people-watching.

Stroll Across the Rialto Bridge

The picturesque and crowded Rialto Bridge has been the main bridge crossing Venice's Grand Canal since 1591. Its covered arches connect the rest of the city with shops and the famous Rialto Market, a good place to visit in the morning. This lively food market, with its many little stalls, has been in operation for centuries. Go early to see fresh fish being unloaded from the boats. In the Rialto Market area, stop by Chiesa di San Giacometto di Rialto , the oldest church in Venice, founded in 471 and rebuilt in 1071, around the same time the Rialto Market began.

Visit Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute

Christopher Larson / TripSavvy

The octagonal Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute is one of the most photographed churches in Venice—and for good reason. Built in the 17th century as a way to show thanks to God for the end of the plague, the Baroque-style church sits on the Grand Canal in the Dorsoduro neighborhood and is visible from the entrance to Piazza San Marco. Dramatic steps leading to the entrance are made of white Istrian stone, while more than 100 figures adorn the church's buttresses. The massive interior is awe-inspiring and contains several Titians. Each year on Nov. 21 during the feast day for Madonna della Salute, you can watch as Venetians walk across a temporary bridge laid across the Grand Canal to the church.

Visit San Giorgio dei Greci

 Lara D'Agostino / TripSavvy

The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint George, San Giorgio dei Greci , is the oldest and most important and historic church of the Orthodox Diaspora. The church, considered to be one of the best Orthodox temples in the world, was constructed by the Greek community in the 16th century. It's located in Venice's Castello district, once the home to a large Greek community. The iconography inside is accented with gold, post-Byzantine mosaics, wood stalls, and a frescoed cupola painted under Tintoretto's supervision. The church also has a leaning bell tower.

Explore Ghetto Ebraico (the Jewish Ghetto)

Lara D'agostino / TripSavvy

The word "ghetto" originated in Venice with the creation of the Jewish Ghetto, or Ghetto Ebraico , in 1516, when thousands of Jews were forced to live in a segregated area of the city. There are two sections: the Ghetto Vecchio (old) and Ghetto Nuovo (new). Multi-story apartment buildings were built with low ceilings to accommodate the dense population and can still be seen as you traverse the area. Two of the five historic synagogues are still in use today, the Byzantine-style Schola Spagnola , used in summer, and the Baroque-style Schola Levantina , used in winter.

Learn About the City's Musical History

Lara D'Agostino / TripSavvy

Near the Renaissance-heavy Scuola Grande di San Rocco art museum in the San Polo sestiere, you'll find Museo della Musica , a free museum dedicated to all things musical in Venice. Besides featuring a solid collection of instruments and a violin-making exhibit, the museum also offers an interesting look at the life of popular Venetian composer and musician, Antonio Vivaldi.

Go Window Shopping

Venice is a window shopper's delight, with many small shops sporting inviting window displays featuring artful blown glass from Murano Island, jewelry, and beautifully decorated Carnevale masks. While you'll find upscale designer shops throughout the San Marco neighborhood, Strada Nova , the wide main street of the Cannaregio district, offers a mix of souvenir shops and local retailers, and you can find art galleries and antique shops in the Dorsoduro district. Avoid buying items from vendors on the streets who may be selling counterfeit goods, as you can be fined for purchasing them.

Attend One of Venice's Many Festivals

US Army Africa / Flickr / CC BY 2.0

Venice plays host to many colorful festivals throughout the year, but perhaps the best known is Carnevale , which lasts about two weeks in February or March (it typically ends 40 days before Easter). Although many of the actual events are expensive, there's still plenty of free entertainment—gondola and boat parades along the Grand Canal, mask parades, elaborate costumes, and a huge fireworks finale—you can see along the streets and canals. Otherwise, see if you can catch the Regatta Storica (the historic regatta), an exciting boat race with a parade of boats that takes place each September. The Festival of San Marco, held each year on April 25, honors Saint Mark, the patron saint of Venice, and kicks off with a huge procession to San Marco Basilica.

Get a first taste of the City of Water on our Venice Legends & Mysteries Free Tour. We'll learn all about the mysteries hidden in this city's fascinating history and explore its less-visited places.

Exploring the Jewish Quarter

Description

At the designated time, we'll meet at the steps of San Simeone Piccolo Church , near Santa Lucia station. We'll kick off our free tour of the legends and mysteries of Venice with a stroll along the banks of the Grand Canal.

We'll stop in some of the most beautiful squares in Venice as we make our way to the  Cannaregio neighbourhood, which is the oldest neighbourhood in the city.

Afterwards, we'll head to the Venetian Ghetto . The Jewish population was forced by the Venetian Republic to live in this part of Cannaregio, from the early 16th to the end of the 18th century. While walking through this part of Venice, we'll discuss the history of the buildings we come across.

You'll also see how the locals live as we wander through residential areas rarely frequented by tourists and learn about local legends.

After a total of 2 hours, our free tour will finish near the famous Rialto Bridge .

This free tour cannot accommodate groups of 6 or more , even if you reserve the tour in smaller groups over various reservations. If you're traveling in a group of 6 or more, please book a  private tour of Venice .

Did you know there are many free things to do in Venice? It’s true!

Venice, Italy , probably isn’t the first city that comes to mind when you think of budget travel, but this picturesque city can be experienced for way cheaper than people typically think. Skip the expensive Gondola rides and focus on the fun and free side of Venice for a worthwhile and cost-friendly trip.

Here are all the best free things to do in Venice!

Want to go inside the landmarks? Save with The Venice Pass!

Free Things to do in Venice

Visit the piazza san marco.

The Basilica San Marco is the only building in the Piazza San Marco that is completely free to enter.

The Basilica is a Roman Catholic Cathedral Church that stands as a house of worship and monument. This cathedral boasts five domes and is a timely example of Byzantine architecture.

You can also wander the square and see attractions like St. Mark’s Campanile and Santo Stefano Bell Tower. This area can be quite busy, especially during the summer months, so I’d recommend visiting in the early morning or anytime during the evening.

Plus, this is one of the best Venice Instagram spots , especially in the early morning!

Cross Over all Four Grand Canal Bridges

Walk across and snap a photo of all four of Venice’s magnificent bridges that connect the islands of Venice at different points along the Grand Canal. The Ponte Degli Scalzi is a white stone bridge connecting the north and south of Venice.

The Ponti di Rialto is an architectural icon in the city, and although it’s gone through an abundance of renovations, it stands in the spot of Venice’s oldest bridge, built in 1181.

The Ponte dell’ Accademia boasts one of the most picturesque views in all of Venice and is a must for photos. You’ll probably also have to cross Venice’s final bridge, Ponte della Costituzione, upon arriving and/or leaving the city as it connects Venice to the mainland.

Get Lost in Venice’s Passageways

This one will probably happen accidentally, and it happens to the best of us. Just embrace it; Venice’s streets are so intricate that even mapping apps typically think you’re on a different passageway half the time.

Some of the most beautiful corners of Venice can only be found by putting your phone away and letting yourself get a little lost. After all, it is a small island, so you can only wind up so far from your next point of interest.

Visit the Acqua Alta Bookshop

This Venetian bookstore consistently makes lists for being one of the most unique bookstores in the world.

Its unique charm draws people in with its whimsical setting and layout. In a city like Venice, where flooding is less of a natural disaster and more of an ongoing annoyance, a bookstore might seem like a bad idea.

Acqua Alta combatted this by aesthetically stacking books in waterproof bins, bathtubs, and even a full-size gondola. Their name in Italian means “Bookstore of High Water,” and they’ve also proclaimed themselves “the most beautiful bookstore in the world.”

Hit up the Hotspots

Venice is home to a seemingly endless number of attractions, and every street seems to have multiple types of art, history, palaces, and holy places.

Decide what’s most of interest to you and make time to visit those places, all of which you can admire from the outside or pay a small fee or donation to enter.

Are palaces your thing? Doge’s Palace is unskippable for any visitor, and Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo features a “snail staircase” which leads to a hidden street and view in Venice.

Do you most want to see some pretty churches? There are plenty of stunning ones, including the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, the Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli, and the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute .

Are you interested in statues? You can visit the monument dedicated to Italy’s first king Victor Emmanuel II or the Giuseppe Garibaldi Monument.

Visit the Lobby of the Hotel Danieli

The Hotel Danieli is quite expensive to stay in or get a drink at, but the gorgeous lobby is free to visitors.

This luxurious and historic hotel was built in the late 14th century by the Dandolo family, and their Byzantine Gothic architecture is some of the most attractive craftsmanship you’ll find in this city.

Take Advantage of Free Museum Day

There are many museums in Venice that are great for learning more about the city’s culture. Very few are always free, like the music museum: Museo della Musica .

However, on the first Sunday of every month, five of these museums are free which are the Gallerie dell’ Accademia , Museo Palazzo Grimani , the National Archaeological Museum , Museum of Oriental Art , and the Galleria Giorgio Franchetti alla Ca’ d’Oro .

Pro-tip: If you happen to be in any part of Italy on the first Sunday of the month, look into what museums might be free in your area, as there are now over 450 museums throughout the country that are always free the first Sunday of the month because of a 2014 legislation that the Italian Minister of Culture granted to encourage people to learn more about Italy’s history.

Sit Alongside the Canals and People Watch

One of the greatest things to do in Venice is to simply sit and take it all in. Venice is a city for everyone, from locals whose families have been there for centuries to lovers taking a romantic stroll.

Venice is a city that’s sinking, and studies show it could be underwater by 2100, so whenever you get the chance to visit, be sure to take some time to marvel at this beautiful city.

Go on a Walking Tour

Venice is the perfect city for walkers. You will hit that 10,000 steps-a-day goal by midday!

If you want to take your wanderings around the city a step further, you can always go on a guided walking tour with Venice Free Walking Tour . Although you still must tip your guide, you can go on a guided walking tour at a fraction of the cost of typical guided tours.

They offer historical and classic tours; plus, you can take advantage of having a knowledgeable local to answer all your Venice-related questions. If you want to do a completely free walking tour, you can always craft one for yourself with Google Maps.

This is one of the easiest free things to do in Venice.

💰 If you’d rather do a paid tour, we have a whole post on the best paid tours in Venice !

Visit All of Venice’s Districts

Each of Venice’s six districts offers something special in terms of beauty and attractions. Venice is such a pedestrian-friendly city that it’s quite easy to walk through all of them if you have the time for it since they each have something unique to offer.

  • San Marco is home to some of Venice’s most popular attractions, including the Bridge of Sighs, Doge’s Palace, and San Marco’s Basilica. This district is typically crowded, so evening is sometimes the best time to visit.
  • San Polo features the stunning Rialto area and is the center-most district of Venice, making it an area with plenty to see, do, and eat.
  • Cannaregio is one of the best neighborhoods in Venice as it captures Venice’s charm and beauty while still feeling a lot more local with very few crowds. This area is also home to the historic Jewish Ghetto of Venice.
  • Dorsoduro is home to plenty of museums and is a great place to find a lovely quiet alleyway to take photos in.
  • Santa Croce is a district that is mainly used as a passageway for visitors entering and leaving Venice, but it still retains its beauty even in these modern times.
  • Castello is perhaps the quietest area of Venice, as it is furthest from most of the attractions, but there are still things to see here, including various public gardens.

Visit the Historic Jewish Grottos

Located in Cannaregio, after you reach the Ponte delle Guglie, you will find yourself in the Jewish Ghetto, which was built in 1516, and is the oldest Italian ghetto.

You can make your way to all five synagogues and learn about the history of the Jewish people of Venice and their hardships in Venice, including only being allowed to exit their district in the daytime.

Enjoy Some Window Shopping

empty cobblestone street

Did you know Venice became famous because of its residents’ glassmaking skills? Exotic glassware and beads are still made in Venice to this day and are beautiful to see, even if you decide not to purchase any.

You can find some of the best Venetian glass stores in San Marco, or you can venture to one of Venice’s neighboring islands, like Murano, to admire some colorful artisan glass.

Wander Through Venice’s Hidden Gardens

Venice is not just a city of canals and beauty. It also has over 500 gardens on its island, and many are open to the public. These gardens are home to an assortment of paths, flowers, trees, fruit, art, sculptures, and water.

Some that are especially nice for a stroll or sitting in nature are the Scuola Vecchia della Misericordia and Palazzo Contarini dal Zaffo. This is truly one of the best free things to do in Venice.

Bonus: What to do in Venice (low-budget, but not free)

These last few things aren’t free to do, but I highly recommend them, and they fit in perfectly with any thrifty traveler’s trip to Venice.

If you don’t want to spend upwards of €80 for a thirty minute Gondola ride, buy a seventy-five minute Venice water-bus ticket for just €7.50 and take the 1 or 2 lines for a roundtrip boat ride that takes you along the Grand Canal and some of Venice’s top attractions. You also get to give your legs some rest after all that walking!

If you want to try authentic Italian food while not overspending, visit Dal Moro’s Fresh Pasta to Go for a heaping serving of made-to-order homemade pasta, sauce, and toppings with prices that range between €5 to €7.

If you want your caffeine fix for a low price, visit Torrefazione Cannaregio , where you’ll find freshly roasted beans, several types of coffee, espresso, and snacks. Biscotti is just €0.50, and the espresso starts at €1.40 if you sit at a table and just €1 if you drink it in the standing area near the counter.

Final Thoughts: Things to do in Venice for free

Venice’s beauty needs no convincing, and budget travelers have no reason to be wary of Venice’s prices.

FAQs: Free Things to do in Venice

A Venezia Unica City Pass includes public transportation and admission to popular tourist attractions like the Palazzo Ducale and the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana.

Visiting Venice on a Sunday is like visiting any other day. Museums are open, but some local markets may be closed.

Vaporetto is the Italian word for ‘water bus,’ referring to the iconic mode of public transportation that zig-zags throughout Venice. These iconic boats travel along pre-set routes and can be used by locals and tourists alike. The Vaporetti boats are essential for navigating Venice’s intricate network of canals and bridges, with stops at almost every major landmark in the city. They’re also a great way to take in the sights of Venice from a unique perspective. In addition to its practical uses, riding a Vaporetto is an authentic Venetian experience in itself – one that you won’t soon forget!

A good tour guide is a friendly greeter and an ambassador of the city. We all live in Venice and we will tell you things about Venice that you cannot find in the most common travel book. All our guides have a degree in different disciplines – Art History, Architecture, Sociology, Economics, Foreign Languages and each of us has a different perspective, different guiding style, different route and personality! One thing that we have in common – passion for this special place and willingness to share it with you. We know plenty about Venice history, culture, local traditions and we can help you with any general or practical questions you have regarding your stay in our city. Tours in Venice are offered by our partners, Ítaka Tours.

Venice is considered by many of those who visit it as the most beautiful city in the world, a place full of history and that managed in the Middle Ages to become the most important commercial port of the Mediterranean, being the point of union between East and West, and filling its famous canals with wonderful palaces that recall the golden age of Venice without forgetting its most important jewel, the Basilica of St. Mark.

In our tours we offer a complete vision of the city, its history, art, architecture and its most influential people. We start with the Free Tour of St. Mark’s Quarter , which covers the most important and monumental part of the city, we travel through its history from the year 421 when its first inhabitants took refuge in these islands fleeing from the feared Attila, until the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy in 1864, passing through important moments such as the IV Crusade, the Sack of Constantinople or the Napoleonic Invasion. We will visit the most important monuments of the city such as St. Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, the Rialto Bridge, the Fenice Theater and the main street of Venice which is the Grand Canal, where the most beautiful palaces of the city are located.

To complete the Venetian history, our Free Tour of the Unknown Venice is a must, where we will walk through the streets of the Venetian Jewish quarter, considered the oldest ghetto in the world and where still today lives a Jewish community that fills this neighborhood with kosher restaurants, Hebrew art stores, bookstores and its five synagogues. On this tour we will also walk through the streets of the old Misericordia neighborhood, which is the place where the few Venetians still live in Venice, being the most traditional and charming place in the city.

A different vision of the city can be found in our tour of the Alternative Venice: Prostitutes, Merchants and Pirates, where we will tour the red light district of Venice visiting some of the old brothels of the city, and also knowing what was for a long time the economic engine of Venice: the Rialto Market, the current fish market that claims to be the most atmospheric place in the city, full of small baccarettos where you can enjoy the typical Venetian skewers accompanied by the famous Venetian spritz.

And finally, a good way to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of Venice, our Free Tour of Murano and Burano, offers a different view of the city through these peculiar islands, the first dedicated to the manufacture of blown glass, where we can see through their stores authentic works of art made by master glassmakers; and the second, a small island of fishermen, where its inhabitants have the habit of painting the facades of their houses in bright colors, giving Burano that peculiar appearance that has made it one of the most picturesque places in the world.

Our tours will include gastronomic, cultural and other recommendations to make your experience in Venice unforgettable.

  • Discover the artistry behind Venetian masks at a workshop
  • Immerse yourself in art at the Accademia Gallery and the Guggenheim Museum
  • Delve into Venice’s cultural heritage at lesser-known gems like the Friari Church and the Grand School of St. Roch

What are some things to do with kids in Venice? Are there any good tours for kids?

Venice is a truly magical destination that’s sure to enchant visitors of all ages. And as a compact, car-free city, it’s a safe and enjoyable option for families. Kids and adults alike will be wowed by the breathtaking gold mosaics inside St. Mark’s Basilica. A gondola ride or boat tour is another only-in-Venice experience that’s sure to delight even the littlest travelers.

If you’re after a more organized activity, consider a family-friendly tour. Our Welcome to Venice Tour combines a visit to St. Mark’s with a light introductory stroll and a gondola ride. For food-loving families, our daytime Tastes & Traditions of Venice Food Tour features typical tastes kids will love, like sandwiches made with simple, delicious ingredients and authentic Italian gelato.

How can I skip the line at St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace?

Spending hours waiting in line at St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace can quickly put a damper on what should be a wonderful experience in Venice. To beat the crowds and ensure you make the most of your time, consider booking a guided tour that will let you bypass the lines at these two top sights.

Want to take your Venice experience to the next level and have both St. Mark’s and the Doge’s Palace entirely to yourself? On our Exclusive Alone in St. Mark’s Basilica & Doge’s Palace Tour , you’ll step into both sites after they’ve officially closed to the public for the day for a VIP experience available to a select few.

What are the best places to eat in Venice?

Some of the best eateries in Venice are bacari , or wine bars popular among locals for drinks and light bites known as cicchetti. A few favorites from our guide team are All'Arco, Sepa, Vino Vero, Al Timon, and Vecia Carbonera—several of which feature on our Tastes & Traditions of Venice Food Tour !

Looking for the perfect restaurant for an authentic dinner? Check out Ristorante Al Covo, Casa Bonita, or Da Ignazio.

For a quick bite near St. Mark’s Square, you can’t go wrong with Birreria Forst, RossoPomodoro for delicious pizza to-go, and ll Calice. These are all fantastic options for the lunch break on our Venice in a Day Tour , too!

How can I get to Murano and Burano from Venice?

You can access Venice’s best-known outlying islands, Murano and Burano, by water taxi or vaporetto (line 12). For a more hassle-free experience, consider booking a guided tour with private boat transport. Our Premium Lagoon Excursion includes an exclusive Murano glassmaking demonstration and a VIP wine tasting at the only vineyard still operating in the lagoon.

How does public transportation work in Venice?

As a city without roads or vehicles, getting around Venice via public transport works a little differently than it does in other cities. Here are a few options for getting around the Floating City.

  • Traghetti: A local alternative to gondolas, used to cross the Grand Canal
  • Vaporetti: Venice's water buses are a bit pricier than the traghetti, but cover more ground (or water!) with their extensive network.
  • Water taxis: While this is easily the most expensive form of public transportation in Venice, it can be convenient if you’re traveling with a larger group (the taxis hold up to 10 people).
  • Buses: If you’re traveling to Venice from the Italian mainland, the local public bus system has connections to Santa Croce in the westernmost part of the city—the only place where you’ll find any vehicles.
