Frankford's New Ice Cream Shop Serves Families and their Furry Companions

Alissa Chafin-Arbaugh WVDN

FRANKFORD, W.Va. — There is a new front to an old building in the Frankford community and many of the locals have been anticipating this day since the Gibson family purchased the property to open the Frankford Veterinary Hospital.

Bill Gibson stated that the opening the ice cream shop, Bones and Cones, was a shared goal between him and his daughter, Willa.

They envisioned bringing back a lost destination in the Frankford area, which used to feature an ice cream shop in the late 70s and early 80s, according to Gibson. Now their goal has been accomplished with Willa, a 16-year-old Greenbrier East High School student, managing the business whenever she’s not on the soccer field.

With COVID-19 slowing down Bill’s job, he took the opportunity as a go ahead to get the ice cream shop ready.

“Willa stayed on me; she would come check production everyday to see how much I had gotten done” said Bill Gibson.

Last weekend, the shop served 21 different flavors of Hershey’s hand dipped ice cream, including dairy free and no sugar added varieties.

“When we first ordered we were told this should be good for a two-week period and we sold out everything by mid-day Sunday that first weekend, it’s unbelievable,” Bill Gibson said about opening during a pandemic. “They made it a family outing, it felt good, and it was something close. A lot of people told us how they have elderly parents and how nice it was too be able to get them in the car on Sunday and let’s drive over and get ice cream, something they can do.”

One thing that makes Bones and Cones unique is their offering of cold treats for customer’s furry four-legged campions. The homemade treats for dogs costing less than a dollar has a variety of flavors.

When asked which flavors do the dogs seem to enjoy most Willa said, “It’s probably peanut butter, it’s the favorite.”

Bones and Cones is open Friday through Sunday, 12-8 p.m. The ice cream shop will be open on Labor Day however (Monday September 7), which is expected to draw quite the crowd.

Due to a later opening than expected, they hope to remain open through September this year. Next year plans are already in the works to add additional outdoor seating and a pavilion for customers to have a place to gather. The community has done a great job supporting the Gibson’s and their vision.

“Everyone loves ice cream; it’ll be a good memory,” Willa Gibson said.

Frankford residents observe Victoria Day weekend with fireworks

Article content.

Hundreds of Quinte West residents poured into the Frankford Tourist Park on Sunday to enjoy a fireworks display not seen in two years.

Frankford residents observe Victoria Day weekend with fireworks Back to video

The free event celebrating the Victoria Day long weekend offered up live music, cool treats and a dazzling fireworks show. As the River Valley Riders graced the stage at the Frankford Lions Club Pavilion playing classic rock and country live music, families began setting up their lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy a night of normalcy not seen in two years.

“The last two years we’ve not been able to do our event out here in Frankfort. So we’re pretty ecstatic to bring it back this year,” explained Colleen Vickers, Special events coordinator for the City of Quinte West.

As attendees awaited for dusk to fall, their children – fueled from the confections made available by KD’s Ice Cream Shop – bounded about the park rolling down hills, skipping stones and even repurposing the illuminated Quinte West sign as a well apt jungle gym.

“People want to come out and are happy that something’s going on this weekend,” said Vickers. “They’re just excited to get out I think really.”

Although the music, ice cream and leisure was more than enough for a good time, the real attraction was the nearly half-hour long fireworks show.

“We do have one of the best shows,” said Vickers. “I’m not aware of another show in the near vicinity for fireworks.”

Adding to the uniqueness of the fireworks show is the Tourist Park itself. Situated on a stretch of parkland along the Trent River in downtown Frankford, the Tourist Park has something for both campers and boaters alike. RVs dotted the park’s campground as boaters floated above near the Trent-Severn Waterway’s sixth lock eagerly watching the sky for the crackling blast of light that sent squirrels running out of their trees.

The event held in Frankford is seen as the kickoff to Quinte West’s summer functions. A full calendar of events can be found online at https://quintewest.ca/events.

“Our Canada Day fireworks show is another one not to be missed,” said Vickers. “We have a lot going on this summer… Finally, after not being able to do anything for a couple years – we’re eager to get back at it.”

Ohio Ice Cream Trail expands to 54 makers around state. See if your favorite made the list

frankford tourist park ice cream shop

The Ohio Ice Cream Trail , started by the state's tourism agency TourismOhio in 2018, expanded its list of treat dealers to 54 stores in 2024.

In the trail's inaugural year in 2018, only 15 stores made the cut. Now, you could throw a dart at the map of the Ohio trail and hit an ice cream store.

Ice cream shops from every corner of the state (including one in Conneaut, the literal corner of the state) are on the 2024 list, serving a variety of colorful and sweet soft serves and ice creams.

Columbus's own Jeni's Ice Cream is on the list, along with several other central Ohio creameries.

Here's what you need to know about the ice cream trail.

What is the Ohio Ice Cream Trail?

TourismOhio started the trail in 2018 to help build awareness of "Ohio’s rich agricultural heritage, culinary culture, and innovative chefs," according to TourismOhio spokesperson Mason Waldvogel.

"Ice cream is one of the many things we make really well here in Ohio, so there’s no way we couldn’t celebrate it!" Director of the Ohio Department of Development Lydia Mihalik said.

TourismOhio only added a handful of shops over the trail's first five years, bringing the total up to 20 stores in 2023. For this year, they chose to add 34 more stores, bringing the total up to 54.

Waldvogel said the large increase in stops was an effort to promote more regions and stores around the state.

How do shops get on the list?

County conventions and visitor bureaus submit their trail suggestions to TourismOhio, which then chooses which to include on the trail.

For 2024, TourismOhio prioritized stores that sell ice cream that's made in Ohio or those that have had a long-term economic presence in the state, Waldvogel said.

A real nut case: Cold Stone Creamery faces suit over lack of real pistachios in pistachio ice cream

A federal judge in New York has given the go-ahead to a New York woman’s class action lawsuit which claims consumers are being duped by Cold Stone Creamery when they purchase certain flavors that “do not contain their represented ingredients.”

Is it nuts to assume a scoop of pistachio ice cream should contain actual pistachios? Or how about real butter in a dish of butter pecan?

Such weighty questions about a favorite summertime confection could soon be decided by the courts.

A federal judge in New York has given the go-ahead to a Long Island woman's class action lawsuit that claims consumers are being duped by Cold Stone Creamery when they purchase certain flavors that “do not contain their represented ingredients.”

Lead plaintiff Jenna Marie Duncan purchased her serving of pistachio ice cream from a Cold Stone Creamery store in Levittown, New York, in or around July 2022. According her lawsuit, Duncan "reasonably believed that the Pistachio ice cream she purchased from defendant contained pistachio.”

But Duncan later learned after reading the company's website there were no pistachios — a member of the cashew family — in the frozen dairy product, but rather “pistachio flavoring" that's defined as a mixture of water, Ethanol, Propylene Glycol, natural and artificial flavor, Yellow 5, and Blue 1, according to the lawsuit.

“When consumers purchase pistachio ice cream, they expect pistachios, not a concoction of processed ingredients,” Duncan's lawsuit reads, noting that competitors such as Haagen-Dazs use real pistachios in their ice cream.

Duncan also takes issue with the ingredients in Cold Stone's mango, coconut, orange, mint, butter pecan ice creams and its orange sorbet.

A message was left by The Associated Press seeking comment from Duncan's attorney.

U.S. District Court Judge Gary R. Brown, whose sometimes tongue-in-cheek court ruling is sprinkled with song lyrics about ice cream — from Louis Prima's “Banana Split for My Baby” to Weird Al Yankovic's “I Love Rocky Road" — writes how the case “raises a deceptively complex question about the reasonable expectations of plaintiff and like-minded ice cream aficionados."

Should a consumer ordering pistachio ice cream expect actual pistachios?

“And if the answer is no, should that leave them with a bitter aftertaste,” wrote the judge, whose decision was released in May.

Brown acknowledges in his ruling, which now allows the case to proceed, that Duncan's alleged claims of deceptive practices under New York's General Business Law “are plausible on their face" when it comes to the pistachio ice cream she purchased. The state's law prohibits “deceptive acts and practices in the conduct of any business, trade or commerce or in furnishing of any service.”

Messages were left seeking comment with lawyers for Kahala Franchising LLC, the parent franchiser of nearly 1,000 Cold Stone stores worldwide. One of the lawyers declined to comment on the case when reached by The Associated Press.

In court records, Kahala sought to have the case dismissed, arguing that a detailed list of the ice cream ingredients are published online. A regional director of operations for Kahala said in court records that no flavor placard at the Levittown location indicated the ice creams are “made with” any particular ingredient.

For the flavors named in the lawsuit, he said “consumers are able to see for themselves there are no ‘chunks’ of what appear to be any specific ingredients in the ice cream that would indicate a particular ice cream contains a certain ingredient.”

There have been numerous lawsuits filed over the years about products not living up to advertising hype, including suits against fast food restaurants for not providing big, juicy burgers or a soda not providing promised health benefits . There have also been lawsuits over products not containing ingredients they purport to contain.

Brown notes in his ruling that some of these disputes have led to an “etymological analysis” over whether a word such as vanilla is being used by a company as a noun to reflect an actual ingredient in a product, or simply as an adjective to describe a flavor.

But the judge acknowledged it's a tricky argument for an ice cream manufacturer to make when it comes to modern-day flavors, noting “when one orders a ‘Moose Tracks’ ice cream cone, the hoofprints of the largest member of the deer family linguistically acts as an adjective.”
