The-Best-Flying-Song

No music fan in their right mind would think of traveling these days without a suitable playlist. Airplane travel lends itself especially well to a thematic mix, since pop music history is so loaded with great flight songs. Here are our picks for some of the greatest, with an emphasis on songs that deal with the thrill of flying.

46: Dierks Bentley: Drunk on a Plane

It used to be the rock and rollers who wrote all the best songs about bad behavior, now the country stars are cornering the market. Just thank the Lord that Dierks Bentley is nowhere near the cockpit.

45: Red Hot Chilli Peppers – The Zephyr Song

The chorus of Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ “The Zephyr Song” talks about flying away “on my zephyr/I feel it more than ever/And in this perfect weather/We’ll find a place together/Fly on my wind.” It features one of Anthony Kiedis’ most restrained vocal performances, evoking the sun-kissed feeling of the lyrics. – Sam Armstrong

44: Bowling for Soup – Turbulence

Not to be confused with the song of the same name by Steve Aoki, Laidback Luke, and Lil Jon, this great song uses a metaphor of air travel and turbulence for life itself. The key lyric: “I’ll be there for you/We can make it through.” – Sam Armstrong

43: Bette Midler – Wind Beneath My Wings

Whether you’re singing it to a friend, a lover, or just as a joke, this Better Midler tune is perfect for karaoke. The lyrical content isn’t explicitly about air travel per se, but Midler’s impassioned performance may make you feel like you’re flying anyway. – Sam Armstrong

42: M.I.A. – Paper Planes

It’s certainly not about a Boeing, but this plane-referencing banger from M.I.A. still fits our theme for this list by virtue of its title. – Sam Armstrong

41: Iron Maiden – Aces High

One of the best songs about flying, surely, the narrator in Iron Maiden’s “Aces High” is part of the British Royal Air Force, ready to fight in the Battle Of Britain. It was the first battle in history to take place exclusively in the air, and the song serves as a heart-racing tribute. – Sam Armstrong

40: Pearl Jam – Given to Fly

Many of the great songs that use flying as a metaphor are literally about freedom. That’s the case with Pearl Jam’s “Given to Fly,” a tune that gradually crescendoes into a big ol’ chorus, mimicking the feeling of taking off into the big blue sky. – Sam Armstrong

39: The Lionel Hampton Quintet: Flying Home

Hold on, could planes really go this fast in 1957? This swing era- standard, co-written by Benny Goodman, is a sleek Concorde all the way. Hampton’s famous version is instrumental, but there’s also some serious velocity on the vocal-powered Ella Fitzgerald version.

Flying Home

38: Kenny Loggins – Danger Zone

This heart-pumping 80s classic from the Top Gun soundtrack mimics the feeling of how planes fly. Moments that feel like absolute mayhem punctuated by ecstatic release when you get up into the sky. – Sam Armstrong

37: The Replacements: Waitress in the Sky

If your long flight happens to find you in an especially wiseass mood, then this is the song for you. Probably not a song beloved by flight attendants, “Waitress in the Sky” was actually written by former Replacements leader Paul Westerberg to make fun of his sister.

36: The Beatles – Back in the USSR

Written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon, this classic Beatles tune starts with the sound of a plane. The song is essentially a parody of tracks that would name various cities in the USA from a few years earlier, but it also sneakily serves as yet another celebration of the romance of travel. – Sam Armstrong

35: Gary Allan: Watching Airplanes

Only in country music would you get an airplane song and a truck song in the very same tune. Here the singer’s stuck in the truck while the love who’s just left him is somewhere overhead. Gary Allan’s gritty voice and storytelling made him a chart fixture all through the 00s, but note how creative he gets with the arrangement on this one: The lead mandolin harked back to R.E.M ., while the soaring strings smack of The Beatles and ELO.

34: Plain White T’s: Airplane

Here’s what you get when you put an airplane song in the middle of a concept album ( Wonders of the Younger ) about the less comfortable side of growing up. In Tom Higgenson’s bittersweet acoustic tune, the airplane carries you toward adult responsibility (“Please get me there real soon I’ve important things that I must do”) and away from past regrets.

Airplane

33: Red Hot Chili Peppers: Aeroplane

“Music is my aeroplane” was such a great idea for a song that you have to wonder why nobody before the Red Hot Chili Peppers came up with it. One of their more adventurous tracks, it shifts between pop harmonies on the chorus to their trademark heavy funk in the verses, with Anthony Kiedis waxing thoughtful about pain and pleasure. It’s probably the best-loved track of their short-lived Dave Navarro era.

32: Saxon: 747 (Strangers in the Night)

The one and only hard-rock classic about New York’s historic power blackout of 1965, Saxon’s 1980 hit “747 (Strangers in the Night)” imagines what it was like to be on one of the planes that couldn’t land due to zero visibility (In real life the planes made it to safety, but it took awhile). Musically it widened Saxon’s reach, with an almost power-pop feel in the chorus. And yes, they made one historical glitch – the 747 didn’t go into service till 1969 – but get the mood just right.

31: Bill Conti: Gonna Fly Now (Theme From Rocky)

Some of us still hear this iconic film theme whenever the plane takes off. That’s why so many people do their disco moves in their seats. Bill Conti’s Rocky theme gets the adrenaline flowing, whether you’re soaring through the air or running up museum stairs.

30: The New York Dolls: Jet Boy

Though this New York Dolls tune is a punk classic, you can’t really tell who Jet Boy is: A plane operator? A guy with a jetpack who flies around New York City? Or was he David Bowie? In any case, you probably don’t want him stealing your baby.

Jet Boy

29: Lenny Kravitz: Fly Away

“Fly Away” was perhaps the most famous flight song of the past few decades, and one of Lenny Kravitz ’s canniest fusions of rock, soul, and psychedelia. Originally recorded just after he turned in the 5 album, he nearly stuck it on a B-side before everyone who heard the song talked him out of it. Now it’s the reason many of us can’t step on a plane without reflexively singing “Yeah, yeah, yeah….”

28: Steve Miller Band: Jet Airliner

One of the joys of traveling is getting away from the hassles in your life, otherwise known as “those funky kicks going down in the city.” Steve Miller Band caught that mood on this grooving flight song, which he borrowed from bluesman Paul Pena.

27: Dionne Warwick: Trains and Boats and Planes

Dionne Warwick and Burt Bacharach could make anything sound jet-set cool in 1966, even a lost-love song like this one. “Trains and Boats and Planes” is one of the few cases where Hal David ’s lyric is a little bit out of sync with the music, which is gently upbeat rather than weepy.

26: The Cowsills: We Can Fly

Sunshine pop at its absolute sunniest, The Cowsills epitomized the kind of lush, orchestrated pop-rock that thrived in the late 60s. Their 1968 single says it all – romantic optimism, close harmony, and fluffy clouds rolling by – making it one of the perfect flight songs.

We Can Fly

25: Townes van Zandt: To Live is to Fly

Speaking of existential statements, “To Live is to Fly” works an entire philosophy of life into three tidy minutes. And Townes van Zandt was apparently flying high on cough syrup, having caught a bad flu at Guy Clark’s house, when he penned these resonant verses about how imperative it is to stay open to all of life’s possibilities. One of the songs that made the Live at the Old Quarter album a milestone and made the late Fort Worth native a hero to the next generation of songwriters.

24: Joan Armatrading: Drop the Pilot

Okay, this isn’t really a flight song but “Drop the Pilot” is really Joan Armatrading’s artful way of saying, “Dump the person you’re with and come along with me.” Since it’s set to one of her most irresistible tunes, it’s a hard offer to refuse.

23: Mike Oldfield: Five Miles Out

Aside from playing every instrument there is, UK musical polymath Mike Oldfield also flies planes. One day his private jet had a near-fatal encounter with a developing hurricane, and he got this suitably dramatic piece of prog-pop out of it.

22: Bob & Doug McKenzie: Take Off’ (featuring Geddy Lee)

Let’s face it, if you grew up in the 80s, you’ll probably never get on a plane without hearing the novelty single “Take Off” going through your head from Canadian comedic duo Bob and Doug McKenzie (aka SCTV alums Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas). You might even have the uncontrollable urge to ask: “How’s it going, eh?” Even though we love Rush, this was also one of Geddy Lee’s career highlights.

Take Off

21: Peter, Paul & Mary: Leaving on a Jet Plane

This 1967 track becomes new again every year around early summer, when college graduations and similar events cause a lot of partings. “Leaving on a Jet Plane” was arguably the performance of Mary Travers’ life, and it was definitely the biggest hit the trio ever had – though the single didn’t take off until two years after the album release. It was also one of the first times anyone heard of songwriter John Denver, who penned the track.

20: Joni Mitchell: Amelia

The singer doesn’t actually leave the ground in this song; it’s her mind and her emotions that fly. Nursing a recently broken heart, she drives out to the desert and watches a team of 747’s overhead, the planes become a symbol of both freedom and the doomed flight of her spiritual sister Amelia Earhart. Unearthly songs like this were Joni Mitchell’s specialty in the Hejira era. And its placement on the album – second track, after the relatively rousing “Coyote”– promises heady skies ahead.

19: Rush: Fly By Night

This upbeat song about venturing out into the world is probably the closest Rush ever got to pub rock. Even by the standards of late lyricist Neil Peart, who wrote it just as he joined the band, it was remarkably down to earth. As great flight songs go, it doesn’t get much better than this.

18: The Moody Blues: The Best Way To Travel

Neil Young wrote “Flying On the Ground is Wrong,” but to the Moodies it was heaven. From their 1968 concept album, In Search of the Lost Chord , that explores acid and meditation as spiritual paths, this song is about soaring with one or both modes of travel.

The Best Way To Travel

17: 10cc: I’m Mandy Fly Me

If you’re lucky enough to have an original 70s copy of 10cc ’s How Dare You! album, then you’ll remember the ad campaign that inspired this tune. This mini-epic about airborne love and danger was one of the band’s peak moments and inspired one of the best flight songs in pop.

16: Yes: We Can Fly From Here

Leave it to prog veterans Yes to turn a plane trip into a grand metaphor for transcendence. Originally a Buggles-era tune by Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn, “We Can Fly From Here” got expanded into a Yes’ side-long epic in 2011.

15: The Guess Who: Orly

One of The Guess Who’s great deep cuts from their 1973 album Artificial Paradise , “Orly” is a Jerry Lee-style piano pounder about getting stranded in the Paris airport the song’s named after. Former frontman Burton Cummings even stole the song’s three-note riff from the airport’s departure signal, making for one of the best flight songs.

14: The Box Tops: The Letter

Alex Chilton ’s first moment of glory may be the best song ever written about flying back to see your baby. Few things capture the joy of flight like the band kicking into high gear over the take-off effects in the finale. Among all of the flight songs, this is a timeless favorite.

13: Slade: Wheels Ain’t Coming Down

Maybe not a song for nervous flyers, but the “Wheels Ain’t Coming Down” depicts Slade barely surviving the commute to a gig via a cheapo propeller plane that they’d chartered. It’s one of those aspects of rock-band life that was considerably less fun than the sex and drugs part.

12: Eddie Floyd: Big Bird

Along with The Box Tops’ “The Letter,” “Big Bird” proved that Memphis had the edge when it came to “flying back to your baby” songs. Eddie Floyd actually wrote it under sadder circumstances; he was flying from London to Otis Redding’s funeral. The Jam also covered it to great effect in 1982.

11: Ozzy Osbourne: Flying High Again

Funny thing about this flight song: back when Ozzy was being accused of trying to kill off the nation’s youth, few people thought to mention that he’d also written one of metal’s most life-affirming songs. “Flying High Again” is a great moment for guitarist Randy Rhoads, but the secret weapon was Uriah Heep man Lee Kerslake on drums.

10: David Bowie – Space Oddity

“Ground control to Major Tom…” The opening lines to David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” remain a pop cultural touchstone all these years later. Listen to it today, though, and the lift-off into the chorus still feels special too. – Sam Armstrong

9: Elton John: Daniel

Elton John ’s 1973 chart-topping smash “Daniel” shows the universality of great pop. Though written about a very specific situation – a young boy whose Vietnam-vet brother takes refuge in Spain – it hit the hearts of everyone who ever watched a loved one fly away.

8: Chuck Berry: Promised Land

Chuck Berry may have birthed the rock’n’roll travelogue with “Promised Land,” whose inherent wanderlust can partly be explained by the fact he was in jail when he wrote it. The lyric is full of vivid imagery including the genius phrase “taxi to the terminal zone,” and a possible reference to racially motivated hassles in the South. It’s not your typical flight song, but it’s one of the greatest.

7: Howlin’ Wolf: Mr. Airplane Man

Howlin’ Wolf was so tough he didn’t bother flying back to his baby, he just got a jet pilot to carry some howls to her from him. “Mr. Airplane Man” is so good that a Northeast garage-blues duo named themselves after it.

Mr. Airplane Man

6: Lynyrd Skynyrd – Free Bird

If you’ve ever been to a rock concert, you’ve no doubt heard a crowd member yell at the band to play this Lynyrd Skynyrd classic. It’s one of the most compelling examples of guitar playing in Southern rock history. – Sam Armstrong

5: Elton John – Rocket Man (I Think It’s Going to Be a Long, Long Time)

One of Elton John’s most famous tunes (and the eventual name of the movie about his life),”Rocket Man” was inspired by a Ray Bradbury short story about an astronaut headed to Mars. The original version never received an official music video, but in 2017, an animated YouTube video was produced that tracked the story closely, beautifully rendering the story of the song. – Sam Armstrong

4: Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers: Learning to Fly

Flying songs tend to be metaphorical since few musicians (besides Mike Oldfield) actually learned to fly planes. In Tom Petty’s case it’s about overcoming self-doubt, and it makes a perfect takeoff point for one of his more far-reaching albums, Into the Great Wide Open . Jeff Lynne’s multi-layered production is perfectly suited to the moody nature of the song.

3: Pink Floyd: Learning to Fly

A spiritual cousin to the Petty song, this was another album-opener (after a short overture) that expressed self-doubt in poetic terms: “Tongue-tied and twisted, just an earthbound misfit, I.” The post-Roger Waters era of Pink Floyd gets relatively little love, but this track proved that David Gilmour could come up with something perfectly gorgeous on his own.

2: Frank Sinatra: Come Fly With Me

The theme song for the jet-set, circa 1958 Frank Sinatra recorded a few flight songs, from “Fly Me to the Moon” to “I Get a Kick Out of You,” but nothing captured the mood like “ Come Fly With Me. ” The only thing that eclipses its greatness is the iconic cover painting of him beckoning you onboard.

Come Fly With Me

1: The Byrds: Eight Miles High

Often mistaken for a drug song, “Eight Miles High” has to be rock’n’roll ultimate flight song. It was largely inspired by main writer Gene Clark’s fear of flying, but The Byrds’ Roger McGuinn (who loved planes, the faster the better) added the 12-string that took it into the stratosphere.

Our golden jet is airborne And flight fifty cuts a path Across the mornin’ sky And a voice comes through the speaker Reassuring us flight fifty Is the way to fly And a hostess takes our order Coffee, tea or something stronger To start off the day Well it’s a bloody Mary morning ‘Cause I’m leavin’ baby somewhere in LA

I wrote a song about the love of flying. It doesn’t just have the words “airplane” or “flying” in it, and it’s not a flying song because it happens to be in a flying video/movie.

Seriously, Learn to Fly by the Foo Fighters ought to be No. 1. The sweetness of a three-minute pop song but rocks hard!

No matter what kind of music you listen to, there’s a song here for you.

Stick around to the end for a chance to share your favorites plus tell us which other songs are on your own pilot playlist.

John Denver - Leaving on a Jet Plane Video

1.      “ Leaving on a Jet Plane” by John Denver

We’ll kick the list off with a classic, and one of the first songs that comes to all our minds when we think “airplane songs.” The lyrics paint a vivid and relatable picture of the reality of life as a pilot or frequent flyer who often must leave their lover or family behind at home. Being married to a pilot isn’t always easy. Which of us haven’t wanted to say to our significant other, “Kiss me and smile for me. Tell me that you’ll wait for me. Hold me like you’ll never let me go,” before heading out the door and leaving on a jet plane?

Denver was only a 23-year-old relatively unknown singer when he penned the lyrics to what would become one of his best-known songs. Peter, Paul, and Mary’s version of the song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Ironically, John’s lyrics about leaving on a plane came true in a twisted way as he left this world by dying in a plane crash in 1997.

BoB Airplanes feat Haley Williams Video

2.      “ Airplanes” by B.o.B. feat. Hayley Williams

Perhaps the most relatable portion of the lyrics to this song, and the section that hits home for any of us who have ever sprinted to a gate trying to catch a connecting flight is: “So airplane, airplane, sorry I’m late. I’m on my way, so don’t close that gate.”

The chorus reminds us of sitting at a darkened gate waiting for a night flight, watching all the other planes taking off while indulging in an introspective moment of thinking about our lives. Haven’t we all at one point or another wished “somebody take me back to the days before this was a job, before I got paid, before it ever mattered what I had in my bank.”

So, the next time you watch a night sky filled with planes, go ahead and “pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars” because we could all “really use a wish right now.”

Quick tip

Pro Tip: If you liked the original, remember to check out Airplanes, Pt. 2 with B.o.B., Eminem, and Hayley Williams.

“Learning to Fly” by Pink Floyd

3.      “Learning to Fly” by Pink Floyd

The emotions of anyone who has ever watched birds and planes while dreaming of soaring “above the planet on a wing and a prayer” are captured in this Pink Floyd song.

Bonus points for the spoken word portion of the song that runs down the final section of a pre-flight checklist. “Throttle friction lock—set. Mixtures—rich. Propellers—fully forward.”

“Big Jet Plane” by Angus and Julia Stone

4.      “ Big Jet Plane” by Angus and Julia Stone

We can’t all take our lover out for a ride on our own personal “big jet plane” like singer Angus Stone dreamed of doing with the dream girl he met at a summer music festival, but we too can sing about it. Plus, as pilots, we can at least take him or her on a ride in our “small GA plane” even if it doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. Either way, this song captures the nostalgia of summer attraction and the desire to fly away with the one you love.

“Amelia” by Joni Mitchell

5.      “ Amelia” by Joni Mitchell

Wanderlust interweaves with elements of aviation history in Joni Mitchell’s song bearing the title of famous female pilot Amelia Earhart. The song includes segments about Earhart’s disappearance while chasing her love of flight saying, “a ghost of aviation, she was swallowed by the sky or by the sea.” Other lyrics follow Mitchell chasing a love of her own in the form of a man who eventually breaks her heart as she realizes “maybe I’ve never really loved, I guess that is the truth. I’ve spent my whole life in clouds at icy altitude.” Melancholy, yet easy to listen to, this song embodies the pain of a dream that becomes “just a false alarm.”

“Jet Airliner” by Steve Miller Band

6.      “ Jet Airliner” by Steve Miller Band

Coming of age excitement and angst take flight in this song about flying away from home to chase your dreams while filled with mixed feelings about leaving the ones you love and the possibility of losing yourself. “Goodbye to people I’ve trusted. I’ve got to go out to make my way” the singers acknowledge while reminding themselves to stay grounded, “Oh, oh, big ol’ jet airliner don’t carry me too far away ‘cause it’s here that I’ve got to stay.” Add this song to the heading off to college or moving across country for that first big job playlist.

“Space Oddity” by David Bowie

7.      “ Space Oddity” by David Bowie

Coinciding with the summer of the first moon landing, David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” marks a time when the general public was as nearly as emotionally invested in and excited about flight as the pilots and astronauts stepping aboard space capsules.

Mixed with the anticipation was concern about all that could go terribly wrong as it does to Bowie’s fictional Major Tom. “Ground Control to Major Tom, your circuit’s dead there’s something wrong. Can you hear me, Major Tom? Can you hear me, Major Tom?”

“Come Fly With Me” by Frank Sinatra

8.      “ Come Fly With Me” by Frank Sinatra

Get swept up on the wings of the Golden Age of air travel. “Come fly with me. Let’s fly, let’s fly away,” Sinatra swoons as he entices us all to once again marvel at the truly impressive wonder that is human flight. Bombay, Peru, Acapulco Bay and more await.

Take your lover for a weekend date or “flying honeymoon” and set the mood with Sinatra singing, “Pack up, let’s fly away!” and “Once I get you up there, I’ll be holding you so near you may hear angels cheer ‘cause we’re together.”

“Aces High” by Iron Maiden

9.      “ Aces High” by Iron Maiden

Jump right into the cockpit with WWII British Royal Airforce (RAF) pilots as the flying aces do battle with the German Luftwaffe in the 1940 Battle of Britain.

The lyrics embrace both the thoughts and emotions of the pilot as they “run, live to fly. Fly to live, do or die.” They also depict the maneuvers and actions pilots take to shoot down the enemy while avoiding disaster themselves: “running, scrambling, flying, rolling, turning, diving, going in again.”

This intense high-energy song is perfect for a workout or as an alarm tone if you’re a really sound sleeping pilot who needs to make sure you wake up on time to get to the airport for your next flight.

“Come Josephine in My Flying Machine” by Spike Jones and His City Slickers

10. “Come Josephine in My Flying Machine” by Spike Jones and His City Slickers

Return to the early days of aviation as a dashing young man sings of taking his girlfriend Josephine up for a date in his “flying machine.”

The lighthearted lyrics of this 1910 song capture the turn-of-the-century exuberance surrounding innovations like air travel. “Oh joy, what a feeling. Where, boy? In the ceiling. Ho, High, Hoopla we fly to the sky so high.”

Aviation/Movie Trivia: If you’re like most of us, you have probably heard a snippet of this song before without realizing it. Think back to the 1997 movie Titanic . As Rose is lying on the piece of wreckage after the sinking, she quietly sings a small portion of this song.

A full-length version is included on the Titanic soundtrack, and in one of the deleted scenes , Jack and Rose are seen laughing and singing the popular song together as they walk the deck.

“Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins

11. “ Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins

This hit single was made legendary by its inclusion in the original Top Gun movie. With the recent release of Top Gun: Maverick , “Danger Zone” is enjoying the spotlight once again.

Another high energy pilot song, this piece is sure to put you in the mood for your next flight (or your next hardcore gym circuit). Just don’t actually “ride into the danger zone.”

“Watching Airplanes” by Gary Allan

12. “ Watching Airplanes” by Gary Allan

This classic sad country love song is nearly universally relatable to all of us who have ever gone through a breakup even if we weren’t literally “sittin’ out here watching airplanes take off and fly, trying to figure out which one you might be on and why you don’t love me anymore.”

Add the sad tune to your break-up playlist or the ‘think about the ones that got away’ soundtrack.

“747 (Strangers in the Night)” by Saxon

13. “ 747 (Strangers in the Night)” by Saxon

This heavy metal ballad was inspired by the real-life Great Northeast Blackout of 1965 when planes were diverted as they approached to land at airports that had lost power.

The lyrics envision multiple 747 aircraft as “strangers in the night going nowhere” as they attempt to navigate the dark.

“Gonna Fly Now” (Theme from Rocky) by Bill Conti

14. “ Gonna Fly Now” (Theme from Rocky) by Bill Conti

The lyrics are few, but the message is memorable. Add this 1979 theme from the hit movie Rocky to both your flight and workout playlists. The big band background and memory of Rocky’s training montage will push you to also achieve greatness. “Gonna fly now. Flyin’ high now.”

“Fly Away” by Lenny Kravitz

15. “ Fly Away” by Lenny Kravitz

Are you stuck at work counting down the hours or days until you can sneak in your next flight? Are you saying to yourself, “I wish that I could fly into the sky so very high…Oh, I want to get away. I want to fly away”? If so, this is the theme song for you.

flying travel songs

16. “ Trains and Boats and Planes” by Dionne Warwick

The classic lost love lament lifts off in Dionne Warwick’s 1966 song about a lover who left, never to return because “trains and boats and planes took you away.”

If you have ever loved someone who moved far away, ending the relationship, you may relate to wishing and praying that “the trains and the boats and plane will bring [them] back, back home.”

“We Can Fly” by The Cowsills

17. “ We Can Fly” by The Cowsills

Embrace young, innocent, exuberant love with an easy, breezy upbeat retro song about a perfect sunny day flight with the one you love.

Pull that person close and serenade them with the unapologetically cheesy lyrics “Baby it’s so funny, how can I feel so sunny? When you’re beside me we can fly, oh we can fly.”

“Five Miles Out” by Mike Oldfield

18. “ Five Miles Out” by Mike Oldfield

Rarely do pilots fly through extreme weather and then release a song about the experience, but that’s exactly what happened for Mike Oldfield. According to Genius , in August of 1980, Goldfield was caught in a thunderstorm while piloting a Piper Navajo over the Spanish Pyrenees Mountain range.

Any pilot who has experienced danger in the cockpit and needed to perform at their best to survive the ordeal will relate to the words running through Oldfield’s head: “Just hold your heading true. Got to get your finest out.”

He even speaks to the sense of fear and dread he experienced while being tossed around in the volatile air currents. “You’re a prisoner of the dark sky. The propeller blades are still! And the evil eye of the hurricane’s coming in now for the kill.”

“Rocket Man” by Elton John

19. “ Rocket Man” by Elton John

By now we all know that “Rocket Man” wasn’t really just about an astronaut blasting off on a lunar mission. There’s another layer to those lyrics that reflects Elton John’s personal struggles with substance abuse.

Still, this song deserves a place on our list if for nothing else than the imagery of a lonely astronaut heading into space and missing his family back at home. “I miss the earth so much, I miss my wife. It’s lonely out in space.”

May Jailer - Aviation

20. “Aviation” by May Jailer(Lana Del Ray)

Before she became Lana del Rey, the singer whose legal name is Elizabeth Grant went by May Jailer. An unreleased (but leaked) pre-Lana-era record included a song that all student pilots whose families are less than supportive will relate to. May sings, “Do you think I’m crazy for considering aviation? I’m a fan of flying,” as she tells her parents, “So I’m going into aviation, yeah, Mom. I’m going into aviation, yeah, Dad.”

Spencer Lee - Still I Fly

21. “Still I Fly” by Spencer Lee

The tiny aviators in the back seat will sing along with Spencer Lee’s “Still I Fly” from the Disney movie Planes: Fire & Rescue.

The lyrics remind them to build their confidence and to fight to make their biggest dreams come true as they take to the skies like the planes in the animated feature. “Never letting go. Gotta learn to grow. Watch me as I touch the sky. Still I fly.”

High Flight - John Denver

22. “High Flight” by John Denver (words by John Gillespie Magee)

John Denver earns a second slot on our best pilot playlist songs with his musical rendition of the famous aviator’s poem “High Flight” written by 21-year-old Canadian Air Force Pilot John Gillespie Magee just a month before he died in a World War II plane crash.

The poem was written after Magee soared to 33,000 feet in his Spitfire Mk1 . This experience was so profoundly moving that Magee, who had previously won prizes for his poetry, sought to translate the emotions into words.

Magee’s poem coupled with John Denver’s melody help us all to feel as if we “have slipped the surly bonds of earth and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings.”

It captures the ethereal, reverent feeling of traversing “the high untrespassed sanctity of space” where the poet says “[I] put out my hand, and touched the face of God.”

“Free Falling” by Tom Petty

23. “Free Falling” by Tom Petty

Yes, the verses of the song are about love and heartbreak in southern California, but the chorus alone makes this song an add for your sky-diving playlist.

Get ready for that next jump as you sing along to the lyrics, “I’m gonna free fall out into nothin’. Gonna leave this world for a while. Now I’m free fallin.”

Flying Down to Rio - Fred Astaire

24. “Flying Down to Rio” by Fred Astaire

In the Golden Age of Aviation, air travel was romantic, exciting, and worth writing songs about. This Fred Astaire song written for a movie by the same name puts us in the seat of a small prop plane as Astaire swoons, “Hey feller, twirl that old propeller. Got to get to Rio and we’ve got to make time. You’ll love it, soaring high above it. Looking down on Rio from a heaven of blue.” Replace “Rio” with your destination of choice and you have the perfect cross country flight song. (Or you could always decide to go international and actually fly down to Rio yourself).

Somewhere in the Sky - Kutless

25. “Somewhere in the Sky” by Kutless

Add this song to your morning flight playlist, then give it a listen both on the way to the airfield and once you reach your cruise altitude. The lyrics remind us to savor each moment and never take for granted or lose sight of the joy of aviation. “The freedom to be in the moment. The reason for making a memory. Never wasting all that comes my way as I take in what I see.”

Student pilots will also love singing along to the chorus “There’s nothing that I’ve ever felt like learning how to fly. I’m learning how to fly.”

How to Become a Helicopter Pilot (Step-By-Step Guide)

Almost everyone looks up when they hear a helicopter flying overhead, right? There’s a certain mystique about helicopters and the people who pilot them. Helicopters are fast, they’re agile and they can get into places that a fixed wing aircraft couldn’t hope to. Helicopter pilots conduct search and rescue operations, they airlift wounded military members out of hot zones, they provide aerial reconnaissance, civilian medical transport and more.

30 best songs about flying.

' src=

Songs about flying capture the human fascination with soaring through the skies, a theme that resonates deeply in music across various genres.

I’ve put together a selection of these tracks to elevate your spirits and inspire a sense of freedom, illustrating how artists have interpreted the exhilarating experience of flight through melody and lyrics.

Table of Contents

Top songs about flying

  • B.o.B. and Hayley Williams – “Airplanes”
  • Nelly Furtado – “I’m Like A Bird”
  • Lenny Kravitz – “Fly Away”
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers – “Aeroplane”
  • Nicki Minaj and Rihanna – “Fly”
  • M.I.A. – “Paper Planes”
  • Pearl Jam – “Given To Fly”
  • Pink Floyd – “Learning To Fly”
  • John Denver – “Leaving On A Jet Plane”
  • Fatboy Slim – Sunset (Bird of Prey)

1. B.o.B. and Hayley Williams – “Airplanes”

Without a doubt, this is one of the most popular songs about airplanes.

It was released in 2010, but it kind of feels like it was yesterday.

It’s still relevant and powerful.

“What would you wish for, if you had one chance? So airplane, airplane sorry I’m late I’m on my way so don’t close that gate If I don’t make that, then I’ll switch my flight And I’ll be right back at it by the end of the night.”

2. Nelly Furtado – “I’m Like A Bird”

I’m Like A Bird” is one of the most iconic pop songs about flying.

In her signature song, Nelly Furtado sings about freedom , independence, and uncertainties of life and love.

“I’m like a bird I’ll only fly away I don’t know where my soul is (soul is) I don’t know where my home is.”

3. Lenny Kravitz – “Fly Away”

Lenny Kravitz’s hit from the 90s is a classic among songs about flying.

The song expresses a strong (and repetitive) wish to escape and get away as far as possible.

The message is quite clear.

“I wish that I could fly Into the sky So very high Just like a dragonfly.”

4. Red Hot Chili Peppers – “Aeroplane”

Red Hot Chili Peppers are right: music is our aeroplane.

So, turn up the volume, and enjoy this gem.

“I like pleasure spiked with pain And music is my aeroplane It’s my aeroplane Songbird sweet and sour Jane And music is my aeroplane It’s my aeroplane.”

5. Nicki Minaj and Rihanna – “Fly”

Released in 2011, Nicki Minaj’s and Rihanna’s track “Fly” seems almost forgotten. But it shouldn’t be.

It’s uplifting and inspiring, just like all the songs about flying high should be.

“I came to win, to fight To conquer, to thrive I came to win, to survive To prosper, to rise To fly.”

6. M.I.A. – “Paper Planes”

When it comes to songs about planes, this tune immediately comes to mind.

Besides being incredibly catchy, “Paper Planes” has an important message; it was inspired by M.I.A.’s experiences of being an immigrant.

The song is based on a sample of The Clash song “Straight To Hell” which also talks about the problem of xenophobia.

“I fly like paper, get high like planes If you catch me at the border I got visas in my name If you come around here, I make ’em all day I get one done in a second if you wait.”

7. Pearl Jam – “Given To Fly”

“And he still gives his love, he just gives it away The love he receives is the love that is saved And sometimes is seen a strange spot in the sky A human being that was given to fly.”

Pearl Jam’s “Given To Fly” is actually a great flying song.

It’s energetic and uplifting, and we can easily imagine ourselves looking at the horizon through that round plane window while listening to it.

8. Pink Floyd – “Learning To Fly”

Pink Floyd recorded one of the most iconic rock songs about flying.

“Learning To Fly” combines real flying instructions and the metaphor of flying.

Moreover, it was inspired by David Gilmour’s fear of flying . He took up flying lessons though, so the song was written during that period.

“A soul in tension that’s learning to fly Condition grounded but determined to try Can’t keep my eyes from the circling skies Tongue-tied and twisted, just an earth-bound misfit, I.”

9. John Denver – “Leaving On A Jet Plane”

John Denver’s 1966 tune is undoubtedly one of the most tender and sentimental songs about jets.

It tells a story of a man who has to go and leave someone he loves behind, even though he doesn’t want to.

“So kiss me and smile for me Tell me that you’ll wait for me Hold me like you’ll never let me go ‘Cause I’m leavin’ on a jet plane Don’t know when I’ll be back again Oh babe, I hate to go.”

10. Fatboy Slim – Sunset (Bird of Prey)

And if you need something that will make you feel like you’re ready to fly away on a jet plane, Fatboy Slim’s “Sunset (Bird of Prey)” is probably a better choice.

It’s a great, upbeat flying song to keep you hyped.

“Bird of prey, bird of prey In the summer sky, flying high.”

11. Angus and Julia Stone – “Big Jet Plane”

“Big Jet Plane” surely isn’t one of the common songs about planes.

But this indie classic will make you feel like you’re floating on a cloud.

It was released in 2009, and we still love to be reminded of it.

12. The Last Shadow Puppets – “Aviation”

Miles Kane and Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner formed The Last Shadow Puppets in 2008.

And one of their best tracks is definitely “Aviation.”

“Aviation in the evening I can feel it coming on Mama told me you should start As you mean to go wrong Or else you’re never gonna get it right.”

13. The Beatles – “Blackbird”

“Blackbird” is a peaceful, foot-tapping masterpiece.

That’s the only thing we can say about this timeless song.

“Blackbird singing in the dead of night Take these broken wings and learn to fly All your life You were only waiting for this moment to arise.”

14. Marvin Gaye – “Flying High In A Friendly Sky”

If you don’t feel very comfortable flying in a plane, this song will help you to relax.

It’s calm and soulful, and it will motivate you to look at the friendly sky.

“Flying high in the friendly sky Flying high without ever leavin’ the ground, no.”

15. Joni Mitchell – “Amelia”

An artist like Joni Mitchell writing a song about a historic person like Amelia Earhart?

There was simply no way that could turn out anything but great.

Mitchell wrote it while she was traveling cross-country by herself. So, it makes sense that she got inspired by the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

“A ghost of aviation She was swallowed by the sky Or by the sea like me she had a dream to fly Like Icarus ascending On beautiful foolish arms Amelia, it was just a false alarm.”

16. The Byrds – “Eight Miles High”

“Eight Miles High” was allegedly inspired by the conversation between Gene Clark (singer) and Roger McGuinn (guitarist) during a flight. Clark asked McGuinn how high they were in the sky.

However, many people believe it’s about a different kind of high.

Either way, it’s a great song with the cool 60s vibe.

“Eight miles high and when you touch down You’ll find that it’s stranger than known Signs in the street that say where you’re going Are somewhere just being their own.”

17. Steve Miller Band – “Jet Airliner”

Let’s move a bit forward, to 1977.

“Jet Airliner” is a great feel-good song that will help you relax next time you’re flying high above the clouds.

“Oh, big ol’ jet airliner Don’t carry me too far away Oh, big ol’ jet airliner ‘Cause it’s here that I’ve got to stay.”

18. Lynyrd Skynyrd – “Free Bird”

This Lynyrd Skynyrd classic should also be on your good flying music playlist.

It’s fast-paced and energetic, and if you’re listening to it while you’re high above the ground, it will make you feel invincible.

“If I leave here tomorrow Would you still remember me? For I must be traveling on now ‘Cause there’s too many places I’ve got to see.”

19. Black Pumas – “Touch The Sky”

There’s something really extraordinary about flying on a plane.

Mountains, oceans, and clouds are beneath you… And the sky looks slightly darker and much much closer. It almost feels like you can touch it.

“If we touch the sky, brother Hear the lovers cry, sister ‘Til we’re satisfied lovers Now we’re taking flight.”

20. Semi Precious Weapons – “Aviation High”

This is a hidden gem among songs about aviation.

It’s simple but very uplifting, dreamy, and catchy.

P.S. – If you like Eurovision winners Måneskin, you’ll probably like Semi Precious Weapons too.

“Our night is lit by the city moon When I see myself reflect on you I know what I was meant to do We’re alive, alive We’re aviation high.”

21. Coldplay – “Clocks”

“Clocks” is not a song with flying in the lyrics, but it’s a perfect flying soundtrack.

It feels very liberating, and that sound in the background somehow fits the sound of a plane engine perfectly.

So, next time you’re gliding above the clouds, listen to this song and let your mind wander.

“Confusion that never stops Closing walls and ticking clocks Gonna come back and take you home I could not stop that you now know.”

22. Birdy – “Wings”

Of course, one of the best songs about wings and flying comes from Birdy.

It’s a lively, emotional song full of memories and gentle expressions of love and desire.

“If these wings could fly Oh lights go down In the moment we’re lost and found I just wanna be by your side If these wings could fly.”

23. Ludovico Einaudi – “Fly”

If music could make you fly, it would be Ludovico Einaudi’s compositions.

And “Fly” is one of his best-known works.

24. David Bowie – “Space Oddity”

How about flying to space?

No one is stopping you from dreaming big. And David Bowie should be a good reminder of that.

Astronaut Chris Hadfield’s cover version of “Space Oddity” was the first music video to be recorded in space.

“This is Major Tom to Ground Control I’m stepping through the door And I’m floating in a most peculiar way And the stars look very different today.”

25. Queen – “Spread Your Wings”

If Freddie Mercury tells you to spread your wings and fly away, you know what you have to do.

As one of their lesser-known tracks, “Spread Your Wings” provides a refreshing yet very Queen-like sound.

And the message of the song is quite clear:

“Spread your wings and fly away Fly away, far away Spread your little wings and fly away Fly away, far away Pull yourself together ‘Cause you know you should do better That’s because you’re a free man.”

26. Jason Mraz – “Plane”

Jason Mraz definitely made one of the most unique songs about flying in a plane.

At first, the lyrics look perhaps too realistic and a bit unusual, but the song turns out to be very emotional in the end.

“Drain the veins in my head Clean out the red in my eyes to get by security lines Dear X-ray machine Pretend you don’t know me so well I won’t tell if you lied.”

27. Radiohead – “Lucky”

Songs about plane crashes probably aren’t the best idea if you’re about to catch a flight.

However, Radiohead’s “Lucky” mentions an air crash in a very specific way; the word itself sort of gets lost in the atmosphere of the chorus.

Lyrically, the song is about a man who survives the crash. But it somehow sounds very liberating and even hopeful.

“I feel my luck could change Pull me out of the air crash Pull me out of the lake ‘Cause I’m your superhero.”

28. Little Mix – “Wings”

Let’s lighten up the mood with Little Mix.

Without a doubt, this is the catchiest song on this list.

It’s a cheerful pop song about wings that represent your abilities. It’s also about not letting anyone put you down.

“Mama told me not to waste my life She said, “Spread your wings, my little butterfly” Don’t let what they say keep you up at night And if they give you-, shh Then they can walk on by.”

29. Alicia Keys – “How It Feels To Fly”

Alicia, we’re all wondering the same thing.

Nonetheless, similar to the previous song, “How It Feels to Fly” talks about taking risks and giving your best.

To some extent, it’s about reaching heights in a sense of fulfilling your own potential.

“I am riding high I don’t want come down But wings don’t here me out If I can touch the sky I risk to fall just to know how it feels to fly.”

30. Frank Sinatra – “Come Fly With Me”

Let’s wrap it up with one of the most iconic songs about flying.

Of course, we didn’t forget about “Fly Me to the Moon”, but nothing captures the charm of traveling and flying like “Come Fly with Me.”

Back then, travel was a luxury, and you can feel that in the atmosphere of this timeless classic.

“Come fly with me, let’s float down to Peru In llama-land there’s a one-man band And he’ll toot his flute for you Come fly with me, let’s take off in the blue.”

Final Thoughts

For today’s playlist, we tried to include different artists and genres.

Some of these songs make perfect flight soundtracks, and some of them will make you feel like you have your own wings to fly.

Therefore, we hope they will enrich your daydreaming and keep you good company on your next flight!

The 23 Best Songs About Flying & Planes

Songs about flight have been written for decades, making it a ubiquitous topic for performers throughout music history.

We’ve compiled this list to represent this range, including tracks from blues and jazz legends and the latest rock and pop stars.

Without further ado, here’s our playlist of the 23 best songs about flying and planes:

23. “Big Jet Plane” – Angus And Julia Stone

Angus and Julia Stone’s indie classic from 2009 is a euphemistic celebration of love and adventure.

“Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane” is an analogy for intimate moments shared between lovers.

It was featured on the album Down the Way , hitting the number-one spot on the Australian ARIA charts.

22. “Given To Fly” – Pearl Jam

Iconic rock band Pearl Jam has produced some of the best 90s songs , and “Given To Fly” is a fantastic song about flying.

The lyrics sing, “And sometimes is seen a strange spot in the sky, A human being that was given to fly.”

It’s a fast-paced and uplifting rock classic that was featured on the Pearl Jam album Yield , released in 1998.

21. “I’m Like A Bird” – Nelly Furtado

Canadian singer and songwriter Nelly Furtado has enjoyed a hugely successful career, with over 40 million album sales worldwide.

“I’m Like A Bird” takes flight as a metaphor for freedom, striving for success, and finding yourself in the modern world.

Released on her debut studio album Whoa, Nelly! , the track was nominated for the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 2002.

20. “I’m  Mandy Fly Me” – 10cc

Released in 1976, the song “I’m Mandy Fly Me” by 10cc explores the life of an airline pilot who’s deeply in love.

It was inspired by lead singer Graham Gouldman’s meeting with an airline stewardess called Mandy Smith.

A popular hit, it appeared on the soundtracks for the movies Airplane II: The Sequel and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective .

19. “Airplanes” – B.o.B. ft. Hayley Williams

Hip hop star B.o.B. joined forces with Hayley Williams for the song “Airplanes,” taking the concept of flight as a metaphor to several levels.

His lyrics read, “Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shootin’ stars,” lamenting that he could then make a wish.

The song performed moderately in the charts, reaching number five on the Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart.

18. “Paper Planes” – M.I.A.

M.I.A. used a simple sample take from “Straight to Hell” to form the basis for their song “Paper Planes.”

It explores feelings of xenophobia with the words, “If you catch me at the border, I got visas in my name.”

This catchy song was released in 2007 and featured in the movie Slumdog Millionaire , which was an unexpected hit at the box office.

17. “Fly By Night” – Rush

Canadian rock band Rush released “Fly By Night” as the title track on their second studio album in 1975.

It’s a hard-rocking song that captures the hustle and bustle of a busy airport terminal and the many faces that pass through.

The album helped to cement their reputation as a band that effortlessly fused progressive rock and traditional rock, as well as being master musicians.

16. “ The Best Way To Travel” – The Moody Blues

Continuing with the progressive rock-themed songs about flying with “The Best Way To Travel” by The Moody Blues, another dynamic production on the topic.

References to getting “high as a kite” in the song point towards drug use and the taking of LSD, popular around the time of its release.

In 2018, The Moody Blues were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for their contributions to the music genre.

15. “Promised Land” – Chuck Berry

Chuck Berry’s career has seen him write songs on all topics, from the best Christmas songs to his iconic song about flying, “Promised Land.”

Written while he was in jail, he references a “taxi to the terminal zone,” showing once again how flight can serve as a metaphor.

Released in 1971, it’s a typically catchy and infectious tune from Berry that was also featured in a documentary about his life.

14. “ Learning To Fly” – Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers took “Learning To Fly” as the first single from their Runnin’ Down A Dream album .

It describes learning to fly as a stand-in for overcoming self-doubt and becoming the best person possible.

Following Petty’s death, the musician Dylan performed a cover of the song in 2017, describing him as “full of light.”

13. “ The Zephyr Song” – Red Hot Chili Peppers

Listening to a great song can sometimes make a person feel like they’re soaring, as the Red Hot Chili Peppers explored in “The Zephyr Song.”

The image of a pilot passing over his hometown represents the feeling of joy when life is going your way, reflected in the song’s upbeat and lively tone.

The track takes its name from a gentle breeze from the West and is derived from the name for the Greek god of the wind.

12. “ Space Oddity” – David Bowie

Responsible for some of the best songs of all time , David Bowie is no stranger to writing music about flying through space.

“Space Oddity” is perhaps his most famous, with Bowie singing about “floating in a most peculiar way” while drifting through space.

Bowie took inspiration for the song from real-life astronaut Major Tom Stafford, the first person to reach space.

11. “ Flying High Again” – Ozzy Osbourne

Ozzy Osbourne’s hit song “Flying High Again,” released in 1980, helped catapult him into rock stardom.

It’s a life-affirming song that encourages listeners to strive to achieve their dreams and hold onto their souls.

Featured on the video game Guitar Hero II , it’s an atypical production from one of rock music’s most controversial figures.

10. “Leaving On A Jet Plane” – Peter, Paul & Mary

Peter, Paul & Mary wrote “Leaving on a Jet Plane” in 1962, delivering one of the best-known songs about flying.

Its simple melody and lyrics have led it to be chanted at sporting events and other celebrations in the years since.

In 2000, Harry Connick Jr. performed a hugely popular cover version of the song at the Academy Awards and received a standing ovation.

9. “Leaving On A Jet Plane” – John Denver

Another iconic rendition of “Leaving on a Jet Plane” came from singer John Denver, who created a sentimental rendition.

He sings about a man who’s forced to leave behind the woman he loves and wanting to hold onto them forever, despite their inevitable separation.

Denver was singing from personal experience, having been forced to move around frequently as a child due to his father’s military work.

8. “Learning To Fly” – Pink Floyd

“Learning to Fly” was inspired by David Gilmour’s fear of flying, the band member who took flying lessons to overcome his phobia.

The lyrics capture his refusal to give in, singing, “Condition grounded but determined to try.”

Pink Floyd covered many subjects in their work, including one of the best songs about breathing , the aptly-titled “Breath.”

7. “Free Bird” – Lynyrd Skynyrd

“Free Bird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of the most memorable flying songs and a great example of Southern rock guitar playing.

“For I must be traveling on now,” read the lyrics, continuing ’Cause there’s too many places I’ve got to see.”

A song about resisting the urge to settle down, it was released in 1973, with an additional four minutes on the album version.

6. “Aeroplane” – Red Hot Chili Peppers

Returning once again to iconic American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers for another of their great songs about flying, “Aeroplane.”

This pop-rock classic uses flying as a metaphor for music, singing, “music is my aeroplane.”

The band takes the traditional blues song from which it is inspired and fuses it with its trademark blend of funk.

5. “Fly Away” – Lenny Kravitz

Lenny Kravitz is already known for singing one of the best songs about freedom , so it’s fitting he’s also had a stab at a great flying song.

“Fly Away” is an anthem about the desire to fly, “So very high, Just like a dragonfly.”

The song was among Kravitz’s biggest hits on the Billboard Hot 100 charts , peaking at number 12 in 1999.

4. “Rocket Man (I Think It’s Going To Be a Long, Long Time)” – Elton John

A list of the best songs about flying wouldn’t be complete with “Rocket Man,” Elton John’s famous tune about an astronaut.

It’s about the loneliness a man experiences when traveling through space to a destination thousands of miles away.

Elton John released the song in 1972, with many great artists releasing their own cover versions in the years since.

3. “Come Fly With Me” – Frank Sinatra

Frank Sinatra’s easy singing style and catchy lyrics have led to some of the best karaoke songs of all time , and “Come Fly With Me” is no exception.

A song aimed towards the 1950s jet-set community, it joins Fly Me To The Moon as one of Sinatra’s most memorable songs.

Unsurprisingly, “Come Fly With Me “has been used in commercials, including for American Airlines, along with other major corporations.

2. “Amelia” – Joni Mitchell

With Joni Mitchell’s Amelia, flight is a metaphor for emotions as they run wild and fly free.

Mitchell sings about Icarus ascending, hinting at someone whose ambitions and dreams are pushing the boundaries.

It’s one of the best flying songs in the folk genre and was released on her 1975 album, Summer Lawns .

1. “Eight Miles High” – The Byrds

The Byrds took aim at flight in 1966 with their airplane song, “Eight Miles High,” released as the title track of their album of the same name.

The surreal lyrics have sometimes been confused for a song about drugs, where the intention was anything but and was meant to reflect their innocence.

The song later became a big influence on the acid rock scene that emerged from the garage punk movement during the 1960s.

So there you have it, our complete guide to the best songs about flying and planes ever produced by some of the most celebrated singer-songwriters in the world.

Whether it’s an upbeat song about watching airplanes or a metaphor for aspirations and emotions, these tunes remain popular today.

It’s a theme that will be explored by singer-songwriters for many years to come, covering all styles and genres of music.

This song teaches us to cherish every second of our lives— to live mindfully . In it, a hitchhiker’s trip aboard a guy’s truck is a metaphor for life—full of twists and turns. Sometimes, it has unexpected stops and detours.

30. Marrakesh Express , Crosby, Stills, and Nash

“ Looking at the world through the sunset in your eyes. Travelling the train through clear Moroccan skies. ”

If you’re stuck in a rut, traveling can help you gain a fresh perspective. A trip, especially to a foreign place, encourages you to get out of your comfort zone

This song is about what happens when you step out of your comfort zone. You start noticing interesting things that add richness to your travel experience.

31. Paris, Texas , Lana Del Rey

“ I went to Paris (Texas) with a suitcase in my hand. I had to leave. Knew they wouldn't understand. ”

Sometimes, we take a trip to get away from painful memories or experiences. Here’s a song that describes this type of healing journey.

The song also plays on the names of the American cities mentioned in the lyrics. When you hear the names, you might think of their European namesakes. At first, it seems like the narrator is traveling overseas. But as it turns out, the narrator didn’t have to travel that far.

32. Mountain Trip to Japan, 1959 , The Trachtenburg Family Sideshow Players

“ Mountain trip to Japan. Going to see the mountains on a mountain trip. He's a very fine man. He is so well rounded and he'd like to see the world before it ever started. ”

Here’s a cheery, quirky, catchy song you can play on a road trip. I can almost guarantee that you’ll find this song stuck in your head for days!

33. Paris Nights/New York Mornings , Corinne Bailey Rae

“ Ooh, we crash into love-filled nights (Paris nights and New York mornings). ”

This song describes the exhilaration of traveling to new places. It also highlights the romance and excitement of experiencing what these new places have to offer.

34. No Roots , Alice Merton

“ I build a home and wait for someone to tear it down. Then pack it up in boxes, head for the next town running. ‘Cause I've got memories and travel like gypsies in the night. And a thousand times I've seen this road… ”

This catchy, upbeat song actually belies the sad origin of the lyrics. This song is about someone who does not feel they have a place to call home, as she’s constantly moving from place to place.

Alice Merton drew inspiration for her hit single from her personal experience of having a nomadic lifestyle. By the time she was 24, she had moved 12 times .

35. The Longest Road , Morgan Page

“ Giddy up and gold mine. Different place, different time. All the stars are in their prime. Pastel trailer park, stars so bright to hide the dark. All is quiet in the yard. ”

The primary concept of this song is the desert. It evokes images of long trips and being surrounded by a desolate landscape.

36. Vienna , Billy Joel

“ When will you realize Vienna waits for you? ”

In this song, Vienna serves as a metaphor for the rest of your life. The song asks listeners, “When are you going to start living your life?”

37. Midnight Memories , One Direction

“ Straight off the plane to a new hotel. Just touched down, you could never tell. ”

This song describes a group of young jetsetters ready to party wherever they land. It highlights making memories and living life to the fullest.

38. On the Road to Find Out , Yusuf/Cat Stevens

“ Well, I hit the rowdy road and many kinds I met there. Many stories told me of the way to get there. So on and on I go, the seconds tick the time out. There’s so much left to know, and I’m on the road to find out. ”

This song is about traveling “in search of freedom and purity.” The narrator is spurred forward by his hunger for spiritual balance.

39. New Horizons (Ultima Thule Mix) , Brian May

“ New horizons to explore. New horizons no one's ever seen before. Limitless wonders in a never ending sky. We may never, never reach them. That's why we have to try. ”

So far, the songs in this collection have been about traveling in different places within the planet. But here’s a song about traveling beyond our world.

It is about traveling to and exploring new places in outer space. It might not be long before commercial space travel is available to humans!

40. Highway Song , Blackfoot

“ It's a highway song. You sing it on and on. On and on. Highway song is as lonely as the road I'm on. ”

This song is about a musician on tour. He feels lonely and homesick.

However, the exhilaration of performing and being on the road prevents him from going home.

41. Hotel California , Eagles

“ On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair. Warm smell of colitas rising up through the air. Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light. My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim. I had to stop for the night. ”

Many travelers report having at least one strange experience during their travels. Have you had one?

In this iconic song, a wayward traveler discovers dark secrets in a hotel set in the desert.

42. Trains, Boats, and Planes , Dionne Warwick

“ Trains and boats and planes are passing by. They mean a trip to Paris or Rome for someone else, but not for me. The trains and the boats and planes took you away, away from me. ”

What’s your favorite mode of transportation when going on long trips?

In this song, almost all modes of transportation are seen in a negative light by a woman who was left by a man eager to see the world.

43. The Love Boat Theme , Jack Jones

“ The Love Boat soon will be making another run. The Love Boat promises something for everyone. Set a course for adventure. Your mind on a new romance. ”

The Love Boat is a TV show that aired from 1977 to 1986. It is about the hilarious romantic experiences of the crew and passengers of the cruise ship MS Pacific Princess .

The show has a theme song that highlights the possibilities of romance and adventure while on board the love boat.

44. Lost in Japan , Shawn Mendes

“ Do you got plans tonight? I'm a couple hundred miles from Japan, and I, I was thinking I could fly to your hotel tonight 'cause I-I-I can't get you off my mind. ”

This song is about traveling for the sake of love. In it, Mendes shows his commitment to his beloved by offering to fly to Japan so that they can be together.

45. Hitch Hike , Marvin Gaye

“ I've got to find that girl if I have to hitchhike 'round the world. ”

In the same vein as the previous song, a guy hitchhikes all across the country, determined to find his girlfriend, even though the girl’s been unfaithful to him.

1. Africa by Toto

best travel songs of all time | africa by toto

Nothing makes me want to go to Africa more than this song by Toto.

They capture it beautifully with their lyrics and each time I listen to it, I am brought back to camping in the desert listening to the dog crying out in the night.

Or it makes me think of climbing Kilimanjaro towering over the Serengeti. And it has had a renaissance getting a lot of air time.

“The wild dogs cry out in the night As they grow restless, longing for some solitary company I know that I must do what’s right As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti I seek to cure what’s deep inside, frightened of this thing that I’ve become”

Dina Rosita Koudys says “ Not exactly about traveling, but it does mention Africa, Kilimanjaro, and Serengeti. And I love the song!

We replied to Dina saying,  “We think Africa is exactly a travel song. It is our favorite song about travel and makes us want to see the Serengeti again and again.”

2. Galway Girl by Ed Sheeran

best songs about travel | galway girl

Ireland is one of our favorite country’s to visit and when Ed Sheeran wrote about Galway it brought us right back to being in the pubs there.

A lot of playlists omit the modern travel songs, but musicians these days have explored more of the world than anyone. And Ed Sheeran is a huge traveler.

We saw Ed Sheeran on Graham Norton talking about his travels and we love his free spirit and down to earth attitude.

“I meet her on Grafton street right outside of the bar She shared a cigarette with me while her brother played the guitar She asked me what does it mean, the Gaelic ink on your arm? Said it was one of my friend’s songs, do you want to drink on?”

3. One Night in Bangkok by Murray Head

best travel songs | one night in Bangkok

From the Musical Chess, this hit by Murray Head made me want to visit Bangkok in the 1990s.

Whenever I’m in the city, I can’t stop singing it!

“I said, “do you speak-a my language?” He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich And he said I come from a land down under Where beer does flow and men chunder”

4. Land Down Under by Men at Work

travel songs | land down under

When thinking about travel music, this song is at the top for and Australian theme.

Men at work reference the Hippy Trail, muscles in Brussels and a den in Bombay.

All while bonding with people from the Land Down Under. Men at work are from Melbourne , Australia

“Bangkok, Oriental setting And the city don’t know that the city is getting The creme de la creme of the chess world In a show with everything but Yul Brynner”

5. Havana by Camila Cabello

traveling songs playlist

This song takes me to Havana. The groove makes me feel that I am at a lounge in Cuba and I love it.

Even if Camila Cabello is taken to East Atlanta, her heart is always in Havana. Just like so many people feel when they visit Havana too!

Havana, ooh na-na Half of my heart is in Havana, ooh na-na He took me back to East Atlanta, na-na-na Oh, but my heart is in Havana My heart is in Havana Havana, ooh na-na

6.  Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd

best songs about travel | sweet home alabama

This song makes me want to go to the American South.

My favorite lyric is when they mention the recording studio Muscle Shoals.

“Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers And they’ve been known to pick a song or two (yes they do) Lord they get me off so much They pick me up when I’m feeling blue, now how bout you?”

After watching the documentary about Muscle Shoals, I now understand what that lyric is all about.

It was the place for rock musicians to record in the 1960s. Rent Muscle Shoals on Amazon

Kathy Bovair  says “ Dave will have my back on this one “SWEET HOME ALABAMA” is the best travel song and an old high school classic from our past”

7. I’ve Been Everywhere Man by Johnny Cash

best travel songs | I've been everywhere

Carmen Davis-Harcum said.  “It’s My favourite travel song.” And we agree. I’ve been everywhere is the ultimate travel song!

If you want to add a song to your travel playlist that captures what it’s like to travel around.

I always envisioned this song being about Johnny Cash writing about his life on the road as a traveling musician.

“I’ve been everywhere, man I’ve been everywhere, man Crossed the deserts bare, man I’ve breatherd the mountain air, man Travel, I’ve had my share, man I’ve been everywhere”

He may not have been everywhere int he world, but he has definitely crossed all of the United States and Canada.

I’ve Been Everywhere by Johnny Cash does the trick.

 8. Route 66 by Nat King Cole

traveling songs | route 66

Route 66 certainly captures the heyday of America’s famous highway running across the country.

It makes me think of simpler (and tougher) times of people hitting the open road with nothing but dreams in their heads.

This song makes me want to get in the car and drive.

“Well if you ever plan to motor west Just take my way it’s the highway that’s the best Get your kicks on Route 66 Well it winds from Chicago to L.A. More than 2000 miles all the way Get your kicks on Route 66″

Trisha Miller  is inspired by Route 66, a trip I have dreamed of for a long time, and someday I will do the entire length in one long, leisurely road trip”

9. Desert Rose – Sting

sting | songs about travel desert rose

This song is apparently about when Adam was banished from the garden of Eden.

But when I listen to it, I think of travel and it transports me straight to the Middle East.

“I dream of rain, I dream of gardens in the desert sand I wake in vain, I dream of love as time runs through my hand Sweet desert rose Each of her veils, a secret promise This desert flower No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this…”

10. Where the Streets Have No Name by U2

songs about traveling | Streets have no name

The song is inspired by the streets of Ethiopia where there aren’t (or weren’t) any street names.

I remember cycling through Africa and we barely saw a road sign.

At the time, Ireland was still under a lot of civil unrest and Bono wrote about a place where class, religion and income are not indicitve of the street they live on.

“I want to feel sunlight on my face I see that dust cloud disappear without a trace I wanna take shelter from the poison rain Where the streets have no name.”

11. Sympathy For The Devil by The Rolling Stones

traveling songs | rolling stones

Daniel Stein Says “ Sympathy For the Devil makes you want to drive. Who wouldn’t include this in their best travel songs playlist?”

This travel song had the most votes in our survey.

So it had to be on our playlist even though it isn’t really about travel. It does talk about historical events around the world though.

“I stuck around St. Petersburg When I saw it was a time for a change Killed the czar and his ministers Anastasia screamed in vain”

12. On the Road Again by Willy Nelson

travel songs | willie nelson

Diane Grady .” We were camping year’s ago on Vancouver Island and a big motorhome pulled out playing”On the Road Again” through the loudspeakers. It was hilarious .

But you know what, On the Road Again is one of the most popular songs played when hitting the road.

The words alone. I’m on the road again!

13. I Left My Heart In San Francisco by Tony Bennet

songs that inspire travel | San francisco

Suggested by Katherine Hill who said, “I left my Heart in San Francisco, of course! This song is the epitome of San Francisco.

Travel Songs don’t have to be about going everywhere. They can be about one place and this is the ultimate love story dedicated to San Francisco.

Add it to your playlist on Amazon

14. Montego Bay by Amazulu

inspiring travel songs | montego bay

Whenever we go to Jamaica we sing this song. It is perfect for travel.

It not only captures the spirit and energy of Jamaica, it explains a lot about the island.

They drive on the island, they drink rum from a silver tray and greet you like a brother would.

“Vernon’ll meet me when the BOAC lands Keys to th M. G. will be in his hands Adjust to the driving ‘n’ I’m on my way It’s all on the right side in Montego Bay

BOAC is a British airplane and I love how they say, “it’s all on the right side, because when you are in Jamaica, you drive British style.

15. Midnight Train To Georgia by Gladys Knight and the Pips

travel songs about a destination | midnight train to georgia

Lauren Mcleod  made this addition to our playlist.

She says “ Even though it’s about heading home instead of away, it sure gets me groovin’ along like I want to leave.”

“The world is his, his and ‘ers alone Oh he’s leavin’ On that midnight train to Georgia (leavin’ on the midnight train) Said he’s goin’ back to find (goin’ back to find) Oh a simpler place in time”

You can also download on Amazon

16. Roam by the B52s

traveling music | roam b52s

Genelle Gregorio “ Roam “ by the B-52s is a fantastic song for slideshows of your travels and to get you all pumped up about traveling and seeing the world.

“Roam if you want to Roam around the world Roam if you want to Without wings, without wheels Roam if you want to Roam around the world Roam if you want to Without anything but the love we feel”

In our hearts, aren’t we all roamers at heart?

17. Leaving on a Jet Plane by Chantal Kreviazuk

travel songs | leaving on a jet plane

Jenny Leach “ We love this track when we are traveling . Leaving on a Jet Plane just screams travel song! Famous recordings are from Peter Paul and Mary, and John Denver.

“All my bags are packed I’m ready to go I’m standin’ here outside your door I hate to wake you up to say goodbye”

While the song is more about leaving for work (most likely the life of a rock n roll band, it still makes us think about traveling.

This song has been re-done a lot over the years, our favorite version is from the movie Armageddon  by Chantal Kreviazuk.

18. Kokomo by The Beach Boys

songs to inspire people to travel | kokomo

Keith Jenkins of Velvet Escape chose Kokomo. This makes me think of the beach for sure.

What we love about Kokomo is that it is a made up place by the Beach Boys, but it sure makes you want to go there. And it captures the spirit of the islands.

19. Graceland by Paul Simon

great travel songs | graceland

Sheri Anderson Wallace  said. “ I love that travel song because it captures all the pieces of a road trip. What could be more of a travel song than a song about road tripping?

We say, it also inspired us to get ourselves to Graceland and see Elvis’ home in Memphis Tennessee.

We’ll never forget visiting Kenya and seeing photographs of Paul Simon at a lodge we stayed at in the Masai Mara. He stayed here with Carry Fisher and it was this place that inspired his music for the album Graceland. I think that was one of the coolest things to see that we stayed at the same lodge.

2 0. Born to be Wild by Steppenwolf

travel songs for travelers

Bonnie Paridaen says “ By Steppenwolf Baby!”  Need we say more?

“Get your motor runnin’ Head out on the highway Lookin’ for adventure And whatever comes our way Yeah Darlin’ go make it happen Take the world in a love embrace Fire all of your guns at once And explode into space.”

Born to Be Wild is all about taking a motorcycle trip across the country. The movie isn’t bad either.

21. New York State of Mind by Billie Joel

best travel songs | New York State of mind

Merav Benaia  told us that it’s the travel song that makes me want to pack my bag and hop on a flight. (event though it’s about taking the bus)

Some folks like to get away Take a holiday from the neighborhood Hop a flight to Miami Beach or to Hollywood But I’m takin’ a Greyhound on the Hudson River line I’m in a New York state of mind

I love New York and this is a love song dedicated to the beautiful State.

Get New York State of Mind on Amazon

22. Sailing, Christopher Cross

best songs for travelers | sailing

Stephanie Broschart stated. “The lyrics from Sailing totally make for a great travel song.”

It’s not far to never-never land, no reason to pretend And if the wind is right you can find the joy of innocence again Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see. Believe me.

23. Proud Mary – Tina Turner

best songs for travellers | proud mary

Whenever we’re in New Orleans , this is the song that comes to mind. It has amazing energy and gets you in the mood to hop on a riverboat and explore!

Big wheel keep on turnin’ Proud Mary keep on burnin’ Rollin’, rollin’, rollin’ on the river

It wasn’t until we took a riverboat tour in New Orleans that we even understood what big wheel keeps on turnin’ meant. It’s the big wheel that propels these riverboats. Cool eh?

24. American Woman by The Guess Who

songs for travel

Lorna Hazen-Francavilla said.  “ It is one of those “roll down the windows and makes crank the tunes kind of songs!”

Even though it is a song about dissing America, a lot of people look at it as a tribute to America. Regardless, it is a song that has a lot of energy.

Check it out on Amazon .

25. Man in the Mirror by Micheal Jackson

music to inspire travel | man in the mirror

Claire Algarme “ I like the beat and the message of the song. It also reminds me to be open to everything I see & meet in my travels and how to be a better person at the end of my journeys.

We love the words of The Man in the Mirror .

Travel creates compassion. It brings people together and it is the best education.

This song empowers that feeling. Through travel we have often been compelled to make a difference.

If you want to make the world a better place Take a look at yourself, and then make a change

26. Kathmandu

kathmandu bob seger

When we were in Kathmandu before climbing to Everest Base Camp in Nepal.

This song captures the wanderlust of travel.

“I figure baby I’ve got nothing to lose, I’m tired of being blue, That’s why I’m going to Kathmandu Up to the mountains where I’m going to.”

It’s such a fun song.

Check it out on Amazon

27. London Calling by the Clash

london calling the clash

Okay, so it might be an anti travel song, but if you just listen to the chorus, London is calling!

so even though the lyrics are pretty angry and depressing, I always sing it when I go to London.

“The ice age is coming, the sun’s zooming in Meltdown expected, the wheat is growing thin Engines stop running, but I have no fear ‘Cause London is drowning I live by the river”

28. Coming to America by Neil Diamond

coming to america neil diamond

I said this in our best road trip songs post, and I’ll say it again, I loved listening to this song while cycling down the continent of Africa .

Coming to America captures the hope and freedom of what was America.

Far We’ve been traveling far Without a home But not without a star Free Only want to be free We huddle close Hang on to a dream

The world looked America for so much when he sang this. Hopefully, it will get it’s welcoming status back again in our life.

But in the meantime, we love listening to Neil Diamond, he is the coolest cat in town.

29. Rambling Man by The Allman Brothers

songs for travel

Voted by – Rasheed Hooda – It’s a classic

“I’m on my way to New Orleans this mornin’ I’m leavin’ out of Nashville, Tennessee They’re always having a good time down on the bayou Lord, them Delta women think the world of me”

30. Laredo by Band of Horses

songs for traveling

Catherine Reyes   says.”It has been my favourite of song to inspire travel for the past three months. It’s pretty recent and has that good on the road again feel.

“Gonna take a trip to Laredo Gonna take a dip in the lake Oh, I’m at a crossroads with myself I don’t got no one else”

31. Istanbul not Constantinople by They Might Be Giants

istanbul not sonstantinople | they might be giants

I had never heard this song before watching the Umbrella Academy on Netflix. When I heard it, it was my new favourite travel song.

We’ve been to Istanbul many times and we did know that it was once called Constantinople.

Istanbul was Constantinople Now it’s Istanbul, not Constantinople Been a long time gone, Constantinople Now it’s Turkish delight on a moonlit night

So now whenever we go back, you know we are going to be singing this song. It is so much fun.

Seriously, give it a listen!

And add it to your playlist through Amazon $1.29

32. Carolina on my Mind by James Taylor

songs about travel | carolina on my mind by james taylor

I just love James Taylor’s calm and soothing voice. And that is exactly what travel is meant to do – calm and sooth.

A lot of can’t travel right now, but we do go to places in our mind, and this captures that daydreaming part of our lives where we imagine being somewhere else.

“In my mind I’m gone to Carolina Can’t you see the sunshine? Can’t you just feel the moonshine? Ain’t it just like a friend of mine To hit me from behind? Yes, I’m gone to Carolina in my mind.”

33. California Dreaming – Mamas and the Papas

travel songs | california dreaming mamas and papas

I think we all feel this way about California on a winter’s day:

I’d be safe and warm, If I was in L.A. California Dreaming, On such a winter’s day?

And who doesn’t love the vocal harmonies of the Mamas and the Papas?

Start dreaming and get it now.

33. Bali Eyes – Porno for Pyros

songs to inspire travelers | bali eyes

When traveling through South East Asia, we discovered this song and became huge fans of the unplugged version by Porno for Pyros.

Ate a mushroom turned into Bali Didn’t look it just jumped down my throat I was starting to die until I Took a trip to Bali Their eyes are god In a glass full of jelly Bali in my eyes

Once we reached Bali, we couldn’t stop playing this one. I think you’ll like it!

34. Sand in My Shoes – Dido

songs to inspire travellers | sand in my shoes

This song captures how amazing travel can be, but how much of a let down it is when you get home.

“Two weeks away feels like the whole world should have changed, But I’m home now, and things still look the same I think I’ll leave it ’til tomorrow to unpack, Try to forget for one night that I’m back in my flat On the road where the cars never stop going through the night, To a life where I can’t watch the sun set”

35. New York by Alicia Keys

inspiring songs for travel | New York

There are so many songs about New York City, we could have created a travel song playlist all about New York alone! (Hey that’s a great idea! )

But we could only choose one and while Frank Sinatra, Beastie Boys, and even New York New York from Guys and Dolls springs to mind, I’m going with Alicia Keys beautiful song about New York.

In New York! Concrete jungle where dreams are made of There’s nothing you can’t do now you’re in New York! These streets will make you feel brand new Big lights will inspire you Now you’re in New York

Admiring the time and effort you put into your blog and detailed information you offer. This is the first time i am reading your post and admire that you posted article which gives users lot of information regarding particular topic thanks for this share.

This list is as bad as you could do without trying to be the worst… One Jason Mraz is bad enough, but two? And no Canned Heat “Going Up The Country”.

Great suggestion with – going up the Country.

Thank You for this amazing list, A Playlist for Best English, Hindi and Bengali songs for travel is a very tough work and you have done a great work.

Hey, hows about something a BIT less cheesy though guys n gals. I give you M.Ward’s Paul’s Song, beautifully mournful and full of bittersweet lonesomeness.

‘How does it feel to be travelling, to live your life on the train oand the aeroplane. Well I ain’t gonna lie to you. Well every town is just the same, when you’ve left your heart in the Portland rain.’ Check it out! .-= Jools Stone´s last blog .. Edinburgh TweetUp Hatches =-.

Thanks Jools, Put it on our facebook fan page and we can include it in our list. Sounds like beautiful lyrics, I would love to include it:)

Whoever submitted “Leaving on a Jet Plane” by John Denver must be unaware that he perished in an experimental aircraft.

Haha, I forgot about that. Very ironic.

Air Travel Don’ts: A Guide to Hassle-Free Flying

' src=

SchoolTube presents: Air Travel Don’ts: A Guide to Hassle-Free Flying

Air travel can be an exciting and convenient way to explore the world, but it’s important to be aware of certain things you should avoid to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. From airport blunders to in-flight faux pas, here are some of the most important “don’ts” of air travel:

1. Don’t Arrive Late at the Airport

One of the biggest mistakes travelers make is arriving at the airport too close to their departure time. This can lead to unnecessary stress and even missed flights. Always aim to arrive at the airport at least two hours before your scheduled departure for domestic flights and three hours before for international flights. This will give you ample time to check in, drop off your luggage, and go through security without feeling rushed.

2. Don’t Overpack Your Carry-On

Packing light is key to a comfortable air travel experience. Overpacking your carry-on can make it difficult to maneuver through the airport and can also lead to additional fees for overweight or oversized baggage. Stick to the airline’s carry-on size and weight restrictions, and only bring essential items such as your travel documents, electronics, and a change of clothes.

3. Don’t Wear Uncomfortable Clothing

Comfort should be your top priority when choosing what to wear on a flight. Avoid wearing tight or restrictive clothing that can make you feel uncomfortable during the flight. Opt for loose, breathable clothing that allows you to move around easily. Also, consider wearing layers so you can adjust to changing temperatures on the plane.

4. Don’t Forget to Stay Hydrated

The air inside an airplane can be quite dry, so it’s important to stay hydrated during your flight. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your flight to avoid dehydration. Avoid sugary drinks like soda and alcohol, as they can actually worsen dehydration.

5. Don’t Be Rude to Airport and Airline Staff

Airport and airline staff are there to help you have a smooth and safe journey. Always be polite and respectful when interacting with them. Remember, they are people too, and they are doing their best to make your travel experience as pleasant as possible.

6. Don’t Be Obnoxious on the Plane

Being respectful of your fellow passengers is essential for a peaceful flight. Avoid talking too loudly, playing loud music, or kicking the seat in front of you. Be mindful of others’ personal space and try to keep your noise level to a minimum.

7. Don’t Ignore Safety Instructions

Safety should always be your top priority when flying. Pay close attention to the safety instructions provided by the flight attendants before takeoff. Familiarize yourself with the location of emergency exits and oxygen masks, and follow all instructions given by the crew.

By following these “don’ts” of air travel, you can significantly reduce the chances of encountering problems and ensure a more enjoyable flying experience. Remember, a little preparation and consideration can go a long way in making your journey smooth and stress-free.

So, pack smart, arrive early, and be respectful – and you’ll be well on your way to a fantastic air travel experience!

Everything to Know About the REAL ID — Including How to Get One and When to Use It

Here's when you'll actually need to get a REAL ID.

flying travel songs

Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg via Getty Images

You've probably seen the signage for REAL IDs all over the airport, but do you know what it actually is? As recommended by the 9/11 Commission, Congress passed the REAL ID Act to set security standards for forms of identification like driver's licenses back in 2005. The act ultimately requires anyone accessing certain federal facilities, boarding commercial aircraft, or entering nuclear power plants to use an ID that meets these standards. But as of today, the REAL ID Act hasn't been enforced . "The deadlines have been pushed out several times, with the current date of May 7, 2025," says Dr. Sheldon Jacobson, a professor of computer science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with a research background in aviation security. Here's what you need to know about REAL IDs, especially as it relates to air travel.

What is a REAL ID and do I need one?

A REAL ID is a government-issued ID that meets federal security standards. Now, most "regular" state-issued driver's licenses do not meet these standards. That's why every state (plus Washington, D.C., and U.S. territories) has developed a new driver's license that's REAL ID–compliant — it'll have a star on the upper portion of the card. When the REAL ID Act becomes enforced, you will need to use a REAL ID–compliant form of identification at airport security . If you don't have one, you won't be permitted to enter the airport.

But do you absolutely need a REAL ID–compliant driver's license to get through airport security? The answer is no. There are other compliant forms of ID for those who don't have a driver's license. "You can use a passport, or other forms of ID that have a higher level of validation. A Global Entry card would also work," says Jacobson. Check out some of the options below, and find the full list of acceptable IDs on Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website .

  • U.S. passport
  • U.S. passport card
  • DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, Nexus, Sentri, Fast)
  • Permanent resident card
  • An acceptable photo ID issued by a federally recognized, Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe
  • HSPD-12 PIV card
  • Foreign government-issued passport

It's also important to note a REAL ID will only be required of travelers 18 years and older. Children do not need an ID to fly, per the TSA.

When do I need to get a REAL ID?

At the time of publication, the enforcement date of the Real ID Act is May 7, 2025. But Jacobson believes the deadline might be further delayed. "The airlines cannot support any measure that may prohibit a ticketed passenger from flying. Congress will find some reason to delay its implementation once again," he says.

It's a reasonable suspicion — the act was originally supposed to go into effect in 2008. But it took states and territories years to get on board, with some states protesting the cost and others concerned about privacy issues. Only in December 2022 did all jurisdictions offer REAL IDs.

In the event the REAL ID Act does go into effect on May 7, 2025, it's best to get your enhanced driver's license sooner rather than later to avoid any potential backlogs as the date nears.

How do I get a REAL ID?

The process of acquiring a REAL ID–compliant driver's license varies per state — you should consult the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to learn more. It also depends on whether you're applying for a driver's license for the first time or upgrading an existing valid driver's license to a REAL ID. Generally speaking, you'll need to visit a DMV office, bring with you certain documents for identification, and possibly pay a processing fee.

Or, if you don't want to upgrade your driver's license, you can always travel with another REAL ID–compliant form of identification, like your passport or Global Entry card.

You asked: Can I fly with weed gummies?

A medical marijuana patient asks our travel advice columnist about bringing edibles to the airport.

Traveling has always come with complications. Our By The Way Concierge column will take your travel dilemmas to the experts to help you navigate the new normal. Want to see your question answered? Submit it here .

My husband and I carry THC edibles for chronic pain in our knees and back (all military related). Can I bring my medication in a gummy form to the airport and not be arrested for possession? — Anonymous

Even if your weed gummies are legal in your state, they’re technically illegal to bring on a plane . Does that mean you’d get arrested at the airport for having them in your luggage? Probably not.

Air travel in the United States falls under federal jurisdiction, so airports and airplanes follow federal marijuana law. According to that law, having any marijuana products (gummies, mints, tinctures, etc.) that contain more than 0.3 percent THC on a dry weight basis is illegal, so you can’t fly with any.

“Even if it’s for medical purposes, it’s still federally illegal,” said John McGowan, a managing partner at Kinner & McGowan , a cannabis law firm in Washington, D.C.

Anything less than 0.3 percent THC is considered hemp, so on the off chance that your weed gummies are really more like CBD gummies with an extremely low dose of THC, you’d be allowed to pack them to fly.

However, airport security isn’t designed to hunt down your weed gummies.

According to Transportation Security Administration spokesperson Lisa Farbstein, TSA officers are trained to detect potential threats to aviation; they don’t look for illegal drugs.

If a TSA officer happens to come across some in the screening process, they may confiscate it, ask the traveler to throw it away in a cannabis amnesty box or refer the matter to law enforcement officers. The risk of the last is higher if the officer discovers large amounts of marijuana, you’re in a state where weed is illegal, or the weed discovery is “coupled with something else,” McGowan said.

For example, law enforcement may be called because you had cannabis and a large amount of cash, or cannabis and a bunch of bullets in your bag.

Mikhail Kogan, author of the book “ Medical Marijuana ” and medical director of the GW Center for Integrative Medicine, says he’s had a few patients tell him they’ve been stopped for their medical marijuana products at the airport, but not because of their THC content. Instead, they were flagged because they were in liquid form in a size that exceeded TSA’s carry-on liquids limit. Kogan has yet to have a patient stopped for carrying weed gummies.

International travel is a different story. Kogan says your risks go up exponentially if you try to take cannabis overseas. “We know how that will turn out for you,” he said, referring to the case of American basketball player Brittney Griner, who was caught traveling to Russia with small amounts of cannabis oil and imprisoned for more than nine months .

In the rare case that you were arrested for having some edibles at a U.S. airport, “as a practical matter, prosecutors have far more important things to do than prosecute people for carrying gummies onto planes,” Washington aviation attorney Mark Lindquist said in an email. “These cases are generally not pursued.”

He continued: “That said, while you’re highly unlikely to be arrested and prosecuted for gummies, bringing an illegal substance onto a plane could still turn into a serious hassle and bummer.”

That could all change if the United States reclassifies marijuana as a lower-risk drug, as Attorney General Merrick Garland has recently recommended . The move would mean cannabis would be treated more like a prescription drug like codeine, Kogan said. But he doesn’t expect reclassification to happen anytime soon.

“Your guess is as good as mine,” he said.

In the meantime, your gummies are forbidden on planes. So is being really high at the airport — so don’t overdo it on a last-minute dose before your trip.

“It should be noted that under Section 121.575 of the Federal Aviation Regulations, the airline should not allow a person to board ‘if that person appears intoxicated,’” Lindquist said. “Usually this means drunk, but it also means stoned.”

Air travel has gone to the dogs — literally. Here’s what to know about BARK Air

Rachel Treisman

A dog rests on a seat in a plane next to a blanket reading

BARK Air officially launched this week, completing its first flight from New York to Los Angeles on Thursday. It also flies to London and aims to add more routes in the coming months. Joe Gall/BARK hide caption

Flying with your dog in first class may sound like a far-fetched dream for many pet lovers. But a new boutique airline launching this week aims to make the “white paw experience” a reality.

BARK Air describes itself as “the world’s first air travel experience designed specifically for dogs first, and their human companions second.”

“BARK Air has taken the white glove experience typical of a human’s first-class experience and redirected all that pampering to pooches – from booking to arrival, to in-flight services and disembarkation, dogs will truly be the VIPs and treated to a positively luxurious, curated experience,” it said in an announcement last month .

Grounded: Emotional Support Animals No Longer Guaranteed Free Flights

Grounded: Emotional Support Animals No Longer Guaranteed Free Flights

BARK Air officially got off the ground on Wednesday afternoon, when its inaugural flight ferried six dogs of varying breeds — from Chihuahuas to a Golden Retriever — and 11 humans (both passengers and crew) from New York to Los Angeles.

The Very Important Pups were treated to chicken-flavored puppuccinos, special cupcakes and a shoe — on a platter — to snack on, according to BARK Chief of Staff Katharine Enos. She told NPR over email that there was “no drama on board.”

“Brooklyn (dachshund) and Eddy (golden) [were] friends and played and the little dogs took nice long naps most of the way,” she added. “After lunch it was nap time for everyone. No potty accidents on board or stolen food either! Everyone felt connected in the way we were obsessed with our dogs.”

Introducing BARK Air: A 100% totally real airline for dogs. We're dog people, and we are tired of there being no truly dog-friendly options when it comes to air travel. Now booking the best-in-class dog focused flight imaginable at https://t.co/eZqVYMC5W3 pic.twitter.com/bzcY2rSO4h — BARK (@bark) April 11, 2024

The airline is a subsidiary of BARK, the company behind dog-focused brands like the subscription service BarkBox. Co-founder and CEO Matt Meeker says he’s been working towards this idea for over a decade.

He was inspired by his late Great Dane Hugo, who traveled with him often but could never fit on a plane — like many non-lap dogs, Hugo would have had to fly in the cargo area rather than the cabin. (Meeker even flew from Florida to New York in a cargo crate to show how disorienting that experience can be, as part of Bark Air’s promotional campaign.)

Many airlines have tightened restrictions for emotional support animals on board in recent years. The logistics and cost of travel can be a highly emotional issue for many families who don’t want to leave their dogs behind when relocating, let alone vacationing, Meeker says.

“We don't think of ourselves as selling dog toys or seats on an airline,” Meeker told NPR in a phone interview. “We think of ourselves as selling awesome emotional experiences with your dog.”

The CDC issues new rules for bringing dogs into the U.S., aimed at keeping out rabies

The cdc issues new rules for bringing dogs into the u.s., aimed at keeping out rabies.

It’s also an expensive one: BARK Air flights between New York and LA cost $6,000 for one dog and one human (or one human and two dogs collectively under 50 pounds) in each direction, and one-way flights between New York and London go for $8,000.

Potential customers were quick to bemoan the cost, with one social media user joking that her pup would need to start selling “paw pics” to make it work.

Meeker acknowledged that “the price is high, and it’s too high.” But he said innovations, especially related to transportation, often become less expensive over time — and he hopes that will be the case with BARK Air, too.

“We have pretty clear ways of bringing those prices down if the demand is there, and that’s what we aim to do,” he added. “We want to make this affordable and accessible for as many dogs as possible.”

The airline aims to pamper passengers, both pups and people

Two dogs and several people sit on a private jet.

The airline doesn't have dog size or breed restrictions but only allows humans over age 18 (or 126 in dog years). Joe Gall/BARK hide caption

On BARK Air, the drinks come in bowls, leashes replace seat belts, champagne is made of chicken broth and the bathroom is, well, anywhere.

“When they feel they need to go, they go,” Meeker said of the dog. “And then we clean up after them. And then we clean the plane between every turn.”

It’s one of the many unique perks — and logistical challenges — of an airline for dogs. BARK has partnered with a New York-based charter company called Talon Air, which provides the pilots, flight crew and plane, a Gulfstream V.

The jets accommodate 14 human passengers, but BARK is capping them at 10 to offer extra space. Meeker says it aims to make the experience as comfortable as possible for dogs, starting “even before the flight.”

BARK Air will do a “pup intake” to learn about the dogs’ temperament and preferences. On the day of the flight, humans are advised to show up an hour early to the terminal, where they’ll present their ID and walk straight onto the plane.

Do your kids want a dog? Science may be on their side

Do your kids want a dog? Science may be on their side

“And so what we've bypassed there is a busy commercial airport and a very rigid TSA environment, and treating the dog as just another piece of luggage,” Meeker said.

Dogs and humans get served their meals — and stow away their toys — before the flight takes off to avoid potential territorial disputes. Once in the air, dogs are offered perks like a spa treatment and blankets covered with pheromones for extra comfort. Meeker says the in-flight crew is trained in dog CPR and “fear-free behavioral practices.”

The airline has no dog size or breed restrictions, but humans must be over 18 (aka 126 in dog years). Once on board, humans are advised to keep their dogs leashed as much as possible and ask before approaching others’.

Meeker, who traveled with his dog on two recent test flights between Florida and New York, says people hoped the dogs would misbehave for purposes of the experiment — but they did anything but, even during moments of “pretty significant turbulence.”

“They calmed everyone down, they floated around, they'd take someone’s seat,” he said. “A strange dog, like, not your dog, would wander up, sit on the couch next to you, put their head in your lap, and it’s like, ‘Oh, that’s great.’ ”

He added, “I don’t know why I’m surprised by this, but the dogs made it magical.”

Demand already appears to be taking off

Meeker said the initial reaction to BARK Air’s launch has been “really overwhelming and positive.”

BARK Air is offering about four round-trip cross-country flights a month, with several already sold out for June and July. It’s already planning to expand its routes, starting with a New York to Paris trip beginning in the fall.

“About a third of people apparently buy their air travel six months in advance,” he said. “So we just published our schedule through the end of the year in order to serve that crowd better.”

The airline is soliciting requests for additional destinations, and Meeker said it received over 15,000 in the first week alone.

They’ve heard from military families who are moving, people who travel for business and New Yorkers spending summers outside the city — all of whom want their dogs there too. Meeker also noted significant demand from snowbirds who want to go south with their dogs for the winter and many requests for flights in and out of Chicago.

“We're just processing that information and choosing the dates, and we're learning a lot,” he added.

He hopes the forthcoming data will allow the company to make more cost-effective decisions soon.

“We’re probably doing this the most expensive way we could, which is chartering a private plane from a private owner,” he explained.

The next step would be to make a longer commitment with the charter company, leasing the plane for a month or even a year to bring down costs. Even better would be buying and outfitting a plane. Meeker has his eye on a Boeing 747 model with a back half dedicated to cargo that could serve as an additional source of revenue.

He says this team already has a design that would feature private cabins with lay-flat beds, a central “dog park” and a bar, for dog and human socializing, respectively.

“That’s the dream,” he added. “But it’ll take a little bit of time to get there.”
