The 12 Best Places to Visit in Florida, According to a Lifelong Resident

The Sunshine State has it all, but these are Florida's best vacation destinations, according to a fourth-generation resident.

Year-round sunshine, miles of beaches, and almost as many palm trees as people — what's not to love? Florida is where the world goes on vacation.

While the state eats, sleeps, and breathes tourism, deciding exactly where to visit in Florida can be the hardest part. Any kind of traveler can enjoy a trip to Florida because the state has it all: fabulous resorts , theme parks for families, outdoor adventures for nature lovers, and historical significance for the curious.

As for the question of the best places to visit in Florida, there's really no wrong answer, but as a fourth-generation Floridian, here's my take.

The Palm Beaches

Think of the Palm Beaches as a fast pass to the best of Florida. An umbrella term for the cities of Palm Beach County, the region includes spots like West Palm Beach, Palm Beach, Wellington, Delray Beach, Jupiter, and Boca Raton.

The sheer diversity of activities available in the Palm Beaches is its strength. You can shop, surf, scuba dive, enjoy brunch with your pup , watch an international polo match, relax on 47 miles of shoreline, meet rehabilitating sea turtles , take a quick two-night cruise to the Bahamas , see a Broadway musical at the Kravis Center , and catch a foul ball at a spring training baseball game. Out west, you can book airboat tours of the Everglades or get up close and personal with rhinos, giraffes, and zebras at Lion Country Safari , a cageless, drive-thru zoo spread over 600 acres.

If you're after a ritzy resort stay, Palm Beach and Boca Raton have you covered. Nothing beats The Breakers — you'll be treated like royalty — but The Colony Hotel , Eau Palm Beach , and The Boca Raton are harbingers of a modern era in Palm Beach.

Across the bridge, West Palm Beach has a big-city feel without the headaches of traffic and congestion. Take the free trolley between Clematis Street, The Square , and the waterfront, or head out to Grandview Public Market in the up-and-coming Warehouse District.

Hilton West Palm Beach houses Galley, a restaurant with tasty cocktails, fresh seafood, and gourmet pizzas, and The Ben West Palm and Canopy by Hilton West Palm Beach Downtown both have rooftops with stellar views.

St. Augustine

As the oldest city in America , St. Augustine has had a lot of time to get it right. Settlers arrived in the mid-1500s and some still-standing spots, like the Fountain of Youth and Castillo de San Marcos, date back almost that far. It's a walkable town imbued with intrigue; whispers of the past swirl through every cobblestone alley.

In St. Augustine, learning about the area's history (preferably via ghost tour once darkness envelops the city) is a given. But there are also newer arrivals built to please the modern explorer, like Ice Plant for cocktails and the Alligator Farm for a perfectly Floridian animal encounter. Visit during St. Augustine's annual Nights of Lights event around Christmas to see the city sparkle in the glow of three million lights.

For the perfect marriage of history and a cozy breed of luxury, book a stay at the adults-only Collector Luxury Inn & Gardens , where you can tour the grounds with the property historian and gather for expertly crafted cocktails at The Well Bar. For a taste of old-world elegance, St. Francis Inn — built in 1791 — is a bed-and-breakfast that captures the spirit of the city and all there is to love about homey accommodations. It's located right on St. George Street, St. Augustine's main drag.

Once you've walked up an appetite, head to dinner at Michael's Tasting Room , The Floridian , or O.C. White's , a historic restaurant in the heart of the action. Or, for something a bit more casual, stop into A1A Ale Works for perhaps the best root beer of your life, served alongside a beautiful view of the Bridge of Lions.

Florida Keys

Stretching 113 miles from Key Largo to the southernmost point of the continental United States in funky Key West, the Florida Keys is a veritable paradise; pick any Key along the way and you're guaranteed a tropical getaway with no need for a passport. Fill your itinerary with activities like boating, diving, fishing, snorkeling coral reefs, feeding 10-foot tarpon at Robbie's , and generally enjoying one of the best destinations in the world for the let-your-hair-down brand of vacationing.

Key Largo boasts the adults-only Bungalows Key Largo , the first all-inclusive in the Keys, while Playa Largo is a solid choice for families or anyone who loves an action-packed trip; there are pools, water sports like sailing, parasailing, and kayaking, and even a hammock garden for reading.

For the best seafood (and Key lime pie) in the Keys, book a table at The Fish House , a family-owned Key Largo institution that's set apart by the fact that they're one of the only restaurants sourcing exclusively from local fishermen, so your fish is as fresh as it gets.

Orlando and Central Florida

Orlando is the destination of choice for many people planning a vacation to Florida, and for good reason: There's Walt Disney World and Magic Kingdom, Epcot , Universal Studios, Universal's Islands of Adventure, Animal Kingdom, Discovery Cove, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter , Gatorland, and more. While those spots will always be popular among visitors and locals alike, there's more to this Florida region.

For example, head due east from Orlando and you'll land at NASA's Kennedy Space Center , where you can explore a complex dedicated to all things space travel, and even watch rocket launches. To the north, quieter Winter Park is considered the Palm Beach of central Florida. There, you can enjoy lakeside sunsets and stroll under canopies of old oak trees. Eat breakfast at Briarpatch and dinner at Hillstone Restaurant .

There are also plenty of ways to get outdoorsy and adventurous in Florida once you've escaped the tourist traps of Orlando. Some distance from the Orlando area, but still in central Florida, you've got the Blue Grotto , a 100-foot clearwater cavern that's popular with divers, and also Rainbow Springs State Park , where you can lazily float down Rainbow River in an inner tube.

Crystal River

Slower-paced, lesser-known Crystal River is a sleepy, tucked-away destination on Florida's western coast. Crystal River has little by way of culinary and nightlife offerings, but it's home to the most striking natural beauty of Florida, especially for those who love being on the water.

A clear kayak tour with Get Up and Go Kayaking is the perfect way to explore the enchanting springs of Crystal River, and wintertime visitors have a good chance of paddling alongside any of the hundreds of manatees who migrate into the springs each year. As you tour Hunter Springs, Jurassic Springs, and Three Sisters Springs, you may also spot dolphins, turtles, birds, and other wildlife. Nearby Plantation on Crystal River offers simple, no-frill waterfront accommodations spread across 232 acres on Kings Bay.

For an even more delightfully Florida vacation activity, head to one of the legendary live mermaid shows at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park , about an hour's drive south of Crystal River.

Miami and Fort Lauderdale

When it comes to the best places to visit in Florida, no destination packs a sizzle quite like Miami. It's a global city with everything you could hope for in terms of great eats, hotels, and party venues. In the uber-Instagrammable Art Deco District in South Beach, you'll find bubbling creativity and the sort of old-meets-new style that keeps Miami on the map, and at nearby Wynwood Walls , there's street art and sky-high murals galore.

If you're planning a trip, August is by far the best month to visit Miami, as long as you're into indulgent five-star experiences. During this month, the perfect trifecta of citywide deals converge: Miami Spa Months , Miami Spice Restaurant Months , and Miami Hotel Months . The promotions give visitors a chance to stay at places like Mandarin Oriental, Miami , book ultra-luxe spa treatments, and dine at the city's best restaurants for a fraction of the usual price.

A bit further north of Miami, bustling Fort Lauderdale is another seaside metropolis where you can spend action-packed days and nights. Work your way down the Ale Trail for craft brews and bites, or board the Water Taxi for a different perspective on the city — it's like a trolley system on water, fitting for what some call the "Venice of America" due to Fort Lauderdale's plentiful waterways. Hop off the Water Taxi at Las Olas Boulevard for the city's best shopping and dining.

Best of all, the new and modern Brightline connects Miami to Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach in an hour or less.

Tampa Bay Area (Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater)

Tampa and its surrounding neighborhoods make up a tri-city haven on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Ride roller coasters at Busch Gardens , or head over to Clearwater Marine Aquarium for an encounter with the slippery stars of the Dolphin Tale movies.

Clearwater Beach is a laid-back town that consistently ranks among the best beaches in Florida. Visit during the Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival to see monstrous sand carvings at the kind of beachfront art event only Florida can host. Stay at Opal Sands — it's a half-mile beach walk from the festival, and each one of its 230 guest rooms is waterfront. Together with St. Petersburg, the area is also an under-the-radar art and culture mecca of sorts, with murals and museums such as the visually stunning Dalí museum.

The Florida Panhandle consists of Pensacola, Panama City Beach, Destin, and Tallahassee, the capital of Florida. A popular spring break spot, the Panhandle relies heavily on tourism.

The Panhandle's calm Gulf waters and white-sand beaches are a major draw, but beach day alternatives abound: Visitors can hike, bike, or canoe in St. Andrews State Park or start happy hour early at Panama City Beach institutions like the delightfully over-the-top Pineapple Willy's (don't leave without ordering a po' boy with your frozen drink). In Destin, Big Kahuna's Water & Adventure Park will keep the whole family busy.

Amelia Island

Quiet little Amelia Island is popular with visitors who can appreciate a charming seaside destination with no crowds in sight. Plus, with rolling dunes and marshes instead of just flat, sandy beaches, the geography of the area packs added interest. There are beaches, of course, but nature lovers will also want to check out Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve and Fort Clinch State Park , home to the 19th-century Fort Clinch plus nature trails, camping grounds, and wildlife.

Another Amelia Island attraction is the oldest lighthouse in Florida, proudly standing 67 feet tall. Charming beachfront lodges and inns line Amelia Island, so visitors have their pick of endearing accommodations. Head to historic downtown Fernandina Beach on the island to shop or chow down at the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival , an annual tradition dedicated to a shared love of shrimp.

A rural little island city with pastel homes, Cedar Key is a charmer. Visitors can expect secluded beaches and botanical gardens to wander, plus nearby natural springs to swim and paddle around in. Cedar Key is a simple spot, so it flies under the Florida tourism radar, but it's a nice place for anyone seeking a vacation that's a bit quieter than the state's more happening hot spots.

Some fun activities in and around Cedar Key include a day trip to nearby Manatee Springs State Park for an up-close animal encounter, especially during the cooler months, or biking, kayaking, and hiking. There's also Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge , Cedar Key Museum State Park , and the Cedar Key Historical Society & Museum if you want to learn more about the area. End your relaxing days with a sunset at Cedar Key Airport Beach.

Naples is another gem on Florida's western coast — the area is called the Paradise Coast for a reason. Romantic and ritzy, Naples is known for beautiful white-sand beaches, sprawling golf courses, high-end restaurants, and upscale shopping — a "sister city" of sorts to Palm Beach, located directly across the state on Florida's eastern coast.

If retail therapy is on the agenda (and it should be in Naples), head to Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South to put a dent in your credit limit. Or, if natural attractions are more your speed, head to the Naples Botanical Garden , Clam Pass Park , or the Naples Zoo . Art lovers will also find a lot to enjoy at Artis — Naples , a multidisciplinary organization home to The Baker Museum and the Naples Philharmonic, or any of the impressive art galleries dotting the city.

Everglades National Park

A national park trip may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Florida, but the state is ripe with one-of-a-kind spots (expect alligators and palm trees instead of bison and geysers) and Everglades National Park is its crown jewel.

Encompassing 1.5 million acres of preserved wetlands on the southern tip of the Floridian peninsula, the Everglades is actually a slow-moving "river of grass," comprising unique habitats such as coastal mangroves, sawgrass marshes, pine flatwoods, and more. It's a wildlife lover's paradise, teeming with alligators, snakes, fish, more than 360 species of birds, and even endangered animals like the Florida panther, American crocodile, and West Indian manatee.

For those eager to explore, there are trails and guided tours available; the main entrances are at Shark Valley, Florida City near Homestead, and Everglades City on the Gulf Coast. Visit during the park's dry season (November to April) for lower temperatures, more active wildlife, and fewer mosquitoes.

Looking for some of the best things to do in Florida? I’ve got you covered!

Florida is full of adventure and unique places. From theme parks to sunken gardens, our famous beaches , historical cities, and hole-in-the-wall surprises, this state is great for any tourist or resident to explore!

As a Florida local, I have explored so much of the state and know all the best and underrated areas to visit! From top museums to beautiful beaches, I love exploring my amazing state!

Here I have put together a list of the cool things to do in Florida. But be warned: they are spread across the state, so be prepared to travel a bit!

And don’t forget you don’t have to visit all these stops, I just love them so much that I wanted to make sure you had a Florida bucket list to help navigate this wild, Sunshine State.

Here are some ideas of what to do in Florida!

Below I have included some of the most fun things to do in Florida as well as some of the most unique things to do in Florida. Visit where and when you can, and keep in mind that these are in no particular traveling order! Just go and have fun exploring the Sunshine State!

Devil’s Den

This underground spring is one of the U.S.’s most prehistoric places, so of course, I had to add it to your Florida bucket list! In my experience, it is one of the best hidden gems in Florida!

The spring of Devil’s Den is 120 feet in diameter and averages 72 degrees year-round. With a depth of 54 feet, many people come here to snorkel, scuba dive, and even rent a cabin or park their RV for some overnight adventure!

Recreationally, there are huge cabanas, charcoal grills, pavilions, lawn games, and a heated swimming pool, so this spring is full of things you can enjoy!

I used to dive here with my sister and dad before he passed so it holds a special place in our family. It really is such a cool place to explore!

You cannot miss out on Devil’s Den because it is a must-see in Florida attraction!

Ginnie Springs

Ginnie Springs is a private park near High Springs, Florida, and is located near the Santa Fe River. Known for its clear and cold water, this is one of the best things to do in Florida during a hot summer day!

There are accessible caverns with sand and limestone bottoms at this spring, and you can float your way around the springs on inner tubes, kayaks, paddle boards, and more.

If interested you can also scuba or snorkel in “Florida’s favorite freshwater dive” or camp by at the wooded acres for a full adventure!

Personally, this is my favorite spring in Florida if I had to pick just one! My favorite part is the Devil’s Ear and Devil’s Eye caves.

Ringling Museum

One of the coolest things to do in Florida is the Ringling Museum in Sarasota .

This museum is HUGE as it has a variety of different exhibits to explore. If you plan to visit, don’t forget to check out my tips for visiting the Ringling Museum !

From the John and Marble Ringling Museum of Art, which displays antiques and modern works, to the Circus Museum at the Ringling, which is an interactive American circus museum, you can spend hours exploring here.

The Bayfront gardens are also gorgeous, and you can visit the Ca’ d’ Zan mansion on the property! This is to say that this museum is massive (66 acres to be exact!) so give yourself time to marvel at everything!

There is a reason that this tops my list of places in Florida that feel like Europe!

I love that the Ringling Museum feels like Europe. It is a place I always recommend to people visiting Florida.

Bok Tower Gardens

Florida is known for its nature and beautiful views on summer days, so it only makes sense to add gardens and sanctuaries to your Florida bucket list!

Bok Tower Gardens is a contemplative garden and bird sanctuary in Lake Wales, Florida. With 250 acres of vast plants, flowers, trees, and art, this place will leave you breathless.

It features a 205-foot tall Singing Tower with carillon bells, and you can also hike the Pine Ridge Trail or visit the Pinewood Estate if you’re feeling adventurous! Just check out the visitor center when you first stop here!

I first visited this site when I was really young and the memory stayed with me. It is so cool and unique!

Disney World

Would it really be a Florida bucket list without Disney? Walt Disney World is one of the most famous things about Florida, and I highly recommend checking out these theme parks!

I am an annual pass-holder and have been visiting the Disney parks my whole life!

The four parks– Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, and Epcot– feature different rides and themes. With character meet and greets, fantastic food, shows, and rides around every corner, you’re bound to have fun here!

Disney is one of the best things to do in Florida with kids, but even adults can have a magical time! Can you really say you’ve been to Florida without the iconic photo in front of the Magic Kingdom castle ?

This really is a must-do in Florida activity for making family memories.

Universal Studios

Often seen as Disney’s “competitor” Universal Studios is another theme park in Orlando that is a cool place to visit in Florida, especially for those who love Marvel and Harry Potter!

Featuring thrill rides, Universal has three parks: Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and Volcano Bay.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is split between two parks and you can take the Hogwarts Express between the two!

Volcano Bay is one of the best water parks in Florida perfect for a summer day.

For movie lovers alike, this theme park is one of the best things to do in Florida, as there is so much history and love for classic films throughout each park. And you can enjoy Citywalk before or after your adventure inside the parks!

Dome Houses in Florida

Close to Cape Romano Island (which is close to Marco Island ), the Dome Houses are one of the most unique things in Florida to visit!

The Cape Romano Dome Houses are only accessible via water, and their offshore location catches the attention of many. Six dome-shaped homes sit on stilts, surrounded by water.

These homes are abandoned. After being built in the 80s, the firm beach on which the domes were built eventually faded away, and now the domes are surrounded by water, making them the perfect setting for wildlife and tall tales. Make sure to check out the legends when you visit!

Kennedy Space Center

The Kennedy Space Center is one of ten National Aeronautics and Space Administration field centers. Located on Merritt Island, this is one of the coolest things you can do in Florida! It is a great day trip from Orlando .

At the space center, you can meet an astronaut, see the Space Shuttle Atlantis, go through the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame, and visit the rocket garden.

This center lets visitors get an up-close and hands-on view of humans in space. From exploring NASA’s space shuttle program to discovering more about upcoming space exploration, the Kennedy Space Center is educational and fun.

Growing up, I visited the Kennedy Space Center with my dad. It is such a unique experience!

Saint Petersburg Sunken Gardens

Located in Saint Petersburg , the Sunken Gardens is one of the most unique things to do in Florida, as there aren’t many gardens like it (they are literally sunken! Below sea level!).

The Sunken Gardens are 4-aces of botanical gardens that have existed for more than a century. They are one of the oldest attractions in the U.S., let alone in Florida.

This paradise located in the city is a great living museum that has a vast amount of tropical plants, meandering paths, waterfalls, and more. The gardens also offer tours, special events, and horticultural programs if it interests you!

A romantic stroll here is one of the best things to do in Florida for couples . Take photos and admire the views together.

I love the Sunken Gardens and think it is the best place to visit in the Tampa area. I have brought many people here including my guy cousins who loved it!

Clearwater Beach

Would you really have a Florida bucket list if you didn’t have a beach on it? Known for its stretch of soft, white sand, the calm waters of Clearwater draw tourists and residents year-round. It is one of the best cities in Florida !

With a winding beachfront lined with restaurants, cafes, and Pier 60 (which has nightly festivals that feature street performers and craft vendors), this place is always busy! This is also our favorite place to catch the sunset in Clearwater Beach!

From jet-skiing to parasailing and paddle boarding, many people love to spend hours on this beach and then retreat to the promenade for food, shopping, museums, and more.

This beach is one of the best free things to do in Florida.

Dry Tortugas National Park

It’s strange to think of national parks in Florida , but Dry Tortugas National Park is one of the most fun things to do in Florida!

Located along the Gulf of Mexico, east of Key West, the 7 islands of this park are surrounded by coral reefs ripe for exploration. Many beaches are popular, too!

Famously, Loggerhead Key has a lighthouse and is known for its sea turtles because Loggerhead Reef is nearby. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you can check out Windjammer Wreck, which is the remains of an 1875 ship! It’s perfect for scuba and snorkeling in Florida !

Castillo De San Marcos in Saint Augustine

Saint Augustine is arguably one of the most historical cities in Florida, so of course, I are adding it to your Florida bucket list!

The Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the United States. Located on the western shore of Matanzas Bay, it is now a national monument!

With Spanish stones, this monument was built to protect and defend Spain’s claims in the New World. While visiting you can explore rooms that once housed soldiers and prisoners, tour the courtyard and gun deck, and watch weaponry demonstrations while learning about its history!

If you are interested in history, this is one of the best historical sites in Florida !

Daytona International Speedway

Daytona Beach is known for two things: the beach, and NASCAR! Of course, I had to add this to my list of things to do in Florida!

Daytona International Speedway is a racetrack that opened in 1959, where it has been home to the Daytona 500, which is arguably one of the most prestigious races in NASCAR history.

When you’re not witnessing a famous event, though, you can also participate in speedway tours and enter the world of racing!

A race here is one of the top things to see in Florida!

Butterfly World

Duval Street is a downtown street in Key West, Florida , that runs from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. This is one of the coolest things to do in Florida, as it is full of adventure and iconic stops!

With its vibrant, hole-in-the-wall bars, historical haunts, shops, and galleries there is not a dull moment on this street! Exploring here is one of the things to do in Florida at night.

Legoland is another theme park in Florida that you can add to your Florida bucket list! This theme park is known for being family-friendly, as it focuses on the construction of Lego toys.

Naples Botanical Garden is a 170-acre paradise and one of the best things to do in Naples .

Stepping in here, you can see plants from all around the world with beautiful horticultural design and attention to sustainability!

Today, the garden welcomes over 220,000 guests per year to experience the education centers, shops, halls, themed gardens, and flora that continue to grow.

The Dali Museum

Southernmost Point of the Continental U.S.A.

I’ve already talked about some things to do in Florida in regard to Key West, but I am adding more to your Florida bucket list because there is so much to do here!

In particular, make sure to check out the Southernmost Point of the Continental United States. This is the lowest latitude in the North American States and is anchored by a concrete buoy.

Eighteen feet above sea level, this is a popular destination and tourist attraction off of Whitehead Street. It is one of the most visited and photographed attractions in Florida!

Created across 4-acres, the pool has gone through several phases over the years, and has become a National Historical Place.

Occupying over 820,000 gallons of fresh water from artesian wells, this is the largest freshwater pool in the United States. It varies in depth (4 feet from 8 feet), features a waterfall, and has a kiddy pool, bridges, grottos, cafes, and sandy areas!

Miami Marine Stadium

Located in Virginia Key, Miami, the Miami Marine Stadium was once one of the best things to do in Florida. Even though it hasn’t been used in years, it is still a unique stop on your Florida bucket list!

Once used to host water sports and famous for its scenic views of Downtown Miami, this stadium is now abandoned. However, it is still worth a stop!

Today the entire concrete stadium still stands tall, slanting down toward the water with a folded plate roof, and every inch of it is covered in graffiti. There are claims for it to be haunted as a speed boat driver was killed on opening day, but you might just have to check it out for yourself when stopping to explore and take photos!

Florida’s Volkswagen Graveyard

One of the most unique things to do in Florida includes going to Florida’s Volkswagen graveyard. Although this isn’t an expected stop on any Florida bucket list, it is strange and fun!

Referred to as the “Disney World for Volkswagen enthusiasts,” this junkyard features vintage VWs and you can wander through a field of aging VWs, parts, and more.

Found in the Ocala National Forest, this is the place to go for swimming, kayaking, and hiking. It is also a great place for wildlife viewing, including otters, American eels, and even albino gray squirrels.

The beautiful blue water is super clear making it ideal for snorkeling. With a year-round temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit, it is refreshing in the heat of a Florida summer.

You can also camp at this spring . The dense canopy provides plenty of shade, picnic tables, and restrooms. This is considered one of the best places for camping in Florida .

Bahia Honda State Park

As one of the best state parks in the Florida Keys , Bahia Honda State Park is truly a slice of paradise!

There are three beaches in Bahia Honda , both with beautiful, clear water. This is one of the best places in Florida to scuba dive .

You can also have fun swimming, kayaking , playing in the best white sand of Florida , or relaxing in the shade of a swaying palm tree. Make sure to walk the trail up to the Old Bahia Honda Bridge too so you can find amazing views of the beaches and ocean.

If you chose to camp in the Keys , you will be rewarded with gorgeous stars overhead. Since this Florida Keys island is so remote, the sky is dark, making it one of the best places for stargazing in Florida . There are even stargazing programs led here so you can learn more about the night sky.

Crab Island

You’ll find Crab Island off the shore of Destin on the panhandle. This huge sandbar is a great place to anchor your boat and enjoy some classic Florida vibes.

The calm water makes it perfect for swimming, and you can even order some food at one of the floating restaurants. Grab a drink and float on a raft as you soak up the sun.

You can also play water volleyball, jump on water trampolines, or play on water slides. Ley your inner child out! This is a family-friendly attraction too, so bring the kids!

To get here, you can charter a boat, ride the Crab Island Shuttle Boat, or kayak. This is easily one of the best things to do in Destin .

Ocala National Forest

One of the best things to do in Ocala is visiting the national forest. At 383,000 acres, this is the largest sand pine scrub forest in the country.

There is so much to see and do in Ocala National Forest , making it one of the cool places to go in Florida for nature. You’ll enjoy springs, rivers, lakes, and amazing hiking trails.

This forest is also a great place to spot wildlife such as black bears, alligators, deer, and tortoises. Make sure to bring your camera for amazing nature shots!

Silver Springs State Park

Found on the Silver River, this park has a history dating back to the 1870s. Like many tourists before you, come and enjoy the clear water and scenic nature.

One of the top things to do here is taking a glass-bottom boat tour. You will love the unobstructed view of aquatic life.

Other Silver Springs activities include kayaking, canoeing, hiking, camping, and spotting wild monkeys. Keep in mind, though, that swimming is not allowed.

Looking for small towns to explore near Orlando? You will love all the fun things to do in Mount Dora .

Set on Lake Dora, this is a quaint town full of shops, restaurants, museums, and historic buildings. The town also hosts a variety of festivals throughout the year.

You will have a great time relaxing at the lake or enjoying views from the water as you kayak. Keep an eye out for bald eagles, turtles, and alligators. Fishing is also popular.

This Florida city is home to top theme parks such as Disney World, Universal Studios, and Legoland. These are some of the most fun things to do in Orlando with kids !

The Sunshine State indeed has all you’ve read about:  luminous golden beaches , the action of  Walt Disney World , alligators sunbathing by the road in the Everglades , roadside orange groves...and much more, too. 

With so many  possible experiences  in Florida , it’s easy to plan a multifaceted journey – one you can’t get in any other US state. I’ve called Fort Lauderdale home for eight years and have taken countless  road trips to Florida from Virginia to visit family – which means I’ve witnessed firsthand how a Florida journey can go sour. Think families covered in sunburns, a lack of consideration for the quick-changing weather (thunderstorms and even hurricanes happen here) and a misunderstanding of just how diverse this state truly is.

So to help you plan your time here, I’ve put together a few tips – the top things to know about health, safety and local etiquette in Florida.

1. Consider a spring or fall adventure to avoid the crowds and heat

November to March is considered peak “snowbird season,” when northerners flee frigid temperatures and decamp to their Florida homes for the winter. Count on hotels, restaurants and attractions statewide being busiest during this time frame, and try to book any experience ahead of time whenever you can. On the contrary, the summer months (June through August) are among the hottest, with temperatures peaking in the mid-to-upper 90°Fs. To avoid the crowds and heat, consider a trip in spring (April–May) or fall (September–October).

2. Plan on spending at least a week in Florida

One of the biggest mistakes on any Florida visit? Only experiencing one tiny part of it, most often either Orlando ’s theme parks or a single beach. To broaden your Florida horizons, rent a car or take the Brightline – a high-speed train that opened new routes in September 2023 between Orlando and Miami – and see more. In between and well beyond, there are historic towns worthy of pit stops or multiday stays, from America’s oldest city ( St Augustine ) to craft-brewery-packed  Tampa .

3. Add a state park to your itinerary of national park visits

Florida has three national parks :  Biscayne , Dry Tortugas and Everglades . All in the southern part of the state and heavily water-focused, they are each buzzworthy – and often packed. Yet overlooked and for a bit of a quieter venture, Florida’s state parks have equally dazzling attractions. Think snorkeling with starfish in the Florida Keys at Bahia Honda State Park , navigating caves at Florida Caverns State Park outside of Tallahassee, looking at marine life through a glass-bottomed boat at Silver Springs State Park near Ocala, and much more.

4. Stay safe during the Atlantic hurricane season

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. Surrounded by warm ocean waters that open all the way to Africa as well as the Gulf of Mexico, Florida seems to be a prime target for nasty storm systems each year. Keep an eye on the National Hurricane Center ’s latest forecasts before and during your trip to see what may be coming your way.

5. If you rent a car, prepare for driver- and traffic-induced mayhem (especially in South Florida)

South Florida – comprising Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach – is one of the most densely populated stretches of land in the continental US. And there simply aren’t many north–south options for getting from city to city, with Interstate 95, Florida’s turnpike and (if you’re not in a rush) US Rte 1 as options. Whether because of an overdose of sun or just the sheer number of people on the road, tempers can flare notoriously, with motorcycles weaving through traffic, heavy horn usage and road rage being norms. Stay vigilant and avoid engaging with an angry driver.

6. Book a trip to one of the Sunshine State’s LGBTIQ-friendly destinations

In recent years, Florida has been no stranger to controversial legislation and political debates about race, parents’ role in education and LGBTIQ+ rights and other hot-button topics. Yet despite the headlines, the Sunshine State is home to some of the strongest and most inclusive communities you’ll find anywhere in the world. Among them is Wilton Manors , “Florida’s gayborhood,” which is packed with welcoming bars, LGBTIQ-inspired art, galleries and more. Key West , Miami Beach , Gulfport , Orlando and Sarasota are long-standing LGBTIQ+ destinations as well.

7. Embrace the cafecito

Regardless of how you like your coffee – con leche , as a cappuccino or black – you have to try Florida’s cultural must, the  cafecito , particularly in the southern part of the state. A tradition from Cuba, just 90 miles away, the cafecito  is a beloved staple for Florida’s Cuban Americans – and today, well beyond that community. Often served in a plastic cup the size of a super-sized thimble, it’s an instant kick, with dark roast espresso and pure sugar. It’s sweet and ultra-caffeinated – and the typical choice rather than a regular coffee. Your  cafecito should be enjoyed in its purest form, too, to avoid getting a weird look.

8. Pack sun-protective gear to avoid the burn

It is the Sunshine State, after all. Carefully soaking in a few rays is expected – but a sunburn always ruins the fun. Wherever you head in Florida, ensure you pack sunscreen, sunglasses, a sun hat and sun-protective attire. Additionally, an umbrella or rain jacket can’t hurt, as the entire state is prone to quick-moving thunderstorms.

9. Yes, you can drink alcohol legally on select Florida beaches

Contrary to the raucous spring break stories you’ve heard through the years, the bulk of Florida beaches prohibit alcohol. If you’re unsure, check out the government website of the city you are staying in for applicable laws. Yet there are popular spots that do allow alcohol (typically in cans, not bottles), including  Perdido Key on the Florida Panhandle, Panama City Beach , Madeira Beach in the St Petersburg area, and Siesta Key Beach in Sarasota.

10. Hire a captain for a stress-free boating adventure

Whether you want to navigate the St John’s River in Jacksonville , fish for flounder off the coast of New Smyrna Beach near Daytona Beach  or enjoy some other boating pursuit, hire a captain. A licensed captain will know to respect pertinent no-wake zones (or speed limits) on Florida rivers and canals. What’s more, a captained boat will be properly equipped with navigation lights, floatation devices and fire extinguishers, and you can be confident that right-of-way passing norms are followed. This is a very wise choice if you have zero boating experience and/or want to consume booze on board.

11. Know what the flags at the lifeguard stands mean

There are five colored flags you may see flying at a lifeguard stand on Florida beaches. Similar to a stoplight, green means calm conditions, yellow means that the currents and surf are moderate, and red means high surf and strong currents. If you see an additional red flag with a no-swimming emblem, the water is closed to the public. The final color – purple – signifies stinging marine life (eg jellyfish) have been spotted nearby, so be extra cautious.

Disney set to invest $17B in Florida parks following approval of development agreement

Five appointees of Gov. Ron DeSantis voted to approve the agreement this week.

Disney and appointees of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis have officially approved an agreement that could result in the company investing $17 billion into its Florida properties, as well as a potential fifth major theme park.

The news comes two months after the two parties agreed to end their drawn-out legal battle, which centered on oversight of the Disney World district that provides municipal services like fire suppression, emergency medical services, law enforcement services, environmental protection and public utilities.

The DeSantis-appointed supervisors of the Central Florida Tourism and Oversight District -- formerly the Reedy Creek Improvement District -- are one step closer to cementing a final agreement with Walt Disney Parks and Resorts U.S., after the appointees unanimously voted Wednesday to accept proposed revisions and approve the new development agreement. Disney is the parent company of ABC News and "Good Morning America."

Both sides had agreed to negotiate this new agreement after a March settlement, which ended their previous lawsuits against each other.

Final action for the development agreement will take place with Walt Disney Parks and Resorts in another public board meeting on June 12.

During a livestream of the first of the board's two public hearings on the agreement on Wednesday, Katherine Luetzow, manager of planning and engineering for the district, highlighted details of the 15-year development agreement, which covers nearly 17,000 acres of land within the district that is currently owned by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts and its subsidiaries.

"Disney is currently planning up to $17 billion of capital investments within the district in the next 10 to 20 years, with a commitment of $8 billion in the next 10 years," she said. "There are provisions for by local initiatives, including a minimum of 50% of goods and services related to the design, development and construction, to be retained with Florida businesses. There is $10 million going to attainable housing projects, and there are provisions for land, as well as wetland and threatening endangered species mitigation credits being donated to the district."

Both urged the board to approve the investment from Disney, which they said would benefit thousands of restaurant workers, their families and anyone who lives and works in this district.

Woody Rodriguez, director of external affairs for Disney Parks, spoke at the meeting and thanked the board for considering the agreement.

"I especially thank your district administrator who definitely hit the ground running," Rodriguez said. "The development agreement will enable us to continue to invest significantly in the district to benefit all parties. We hope that the board votes to approve it at your next public hearing. Thank you."

As ABC News reported previously, DeSantis has been at odds with Disney since the company publicly criticized a DeSantis-backed controversial Florida law that restricts content concerning sexual orientation and gender identity in grades kindergarten through third grade. The Parental Rights in Education Law was dubbed by critics as the "Don't Say Gay" law, with opponents arguing it painted LGBTQ topics as taboo or inappropriate.

DeSantis subsequently took control of Disney's special tax district, which allows the theme park to govern itself, and the Florida Legislature voted to dissolve the former governing board of the district, creating the DeSantis-appointed Central Florida Tourism Oversight District in its place.

Disney sued DeSantis and various Florida officials in April 2023 over the decision, alleging the move was "patently retaliatory, patently anti-business, and patently unconstitutional." The lawsuit took aim at the state oversight board's decision to void "publicly noticed and duly agreed development contracts which had laid the foundation for billions of Disney's investment dollars and thousands of jobs," according to the legal filing.

The company called the move "a targeted campaign of government retaliation -- orchestrated at every step by Gov. DeSantis as punishment for Disney's protected speech" and said it "threatens Disney's business operations, jeopardizes its economic future in the region, and violates its constitutional rights."

A federal judge in Florida dismissed the lawsuit in January this year, stating at the time that Disney had not shown standing to sue the governor. Disney subsequently appealed the ruling.

In March, Disney agreed to end litigation in light of the proposed development agreements, which were approved on Wednesday, with Walt Disney World President Jeff Vahle stating at the time, "We are pleased to put an end to all litigation pending in state court in Florida between Disney and the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. This agreement opens a new chapter of constructive engagement with the new leadership of the district and serves the interests of all parties by enabling significant continued investment and the creation of thousands of direct and indirect jobs and economic opportunity in the State."

Disney is the parent company of ABC News and "Good Morning America."

Paul Maurice says the Florida Panthers’ long travel day to Edmonton on Wednesday was close to much ado about nothing, with the players shrugging off delays during a storm, playing more card games than usual, as coaches accepted far too many food offerings on the charter plane.

“Yes, our day got pushed around. Some players’ shoes got a little wet (getting onto the plane in Florida). The coaches put on seven pounds (due to meals on board).

“The guys get on the plane, we sit and wait, they’re playing cards, they’re laughing. Every time one of the trainers walked in (lugging bags around) and was soaking wet, they got an ovation. Look, we got here at eight o’clock instead of six o’clock. No big deal.

“We’re joking around with this (travel), but back in Florida with flooding, people are hurting. That’s a serious thing happening there. But our travel day, it was nothing.”

The Oilers flew home Tuesday after Monday’s 4-1 loss, but the Panthers decided to let their players rest, and then practise Wednesday morning before flying.

“We have a bunch of really smart people who make better decisions than we do, and we have reasons for it,” Maurice said, mentioning medical and sleep experts.

“At no point when a player gets a cold does he come and see me. He talks to other people.”

Players are adaptable. Many played junior hockey where they would ride buses without chefs across the Prairies, playing three games in three nights and arriving at rinks a few hours before games. They survived.

That said, the trip to Edmonton was the first time in three months that the Panthers have been outside their time zone while the Oilers have played a Central time zone team (Dallas) and now one in the Eastern to get this far, which might be a disadvantage to the Florida players’ internal body clocks.

But maybe too much is made of that.

Florida has played the Tampa Bay Lightning, Boston Bruins and New York Rangers to get here.

“I think there’s a block of teams that have tough travel in our league and certainly Edmonton does,” Maurice said.

“But all the teams we play in our division… it’s a three-plus hour flight for us, and we did that all year long.”

Maurice has some history of bouncing around, and all the travel may be hurting a team. But that was when he was coaching in Winnipeg.

“I remember (the Jets) got beat by St. Louis the year they won the Stanley Cup (in 2019), and five of the previous six weeks before the playoffs started, we were on one coast or the other for games, and I thought that affected us over time, how you recover,” Maurice said.

While the Oilers are juggling who’s in and who’s out for Game 3 because of injuries, the Panthers will be going with the same lineup as Game 2.

Captain Sasha Barkov got hit in the face by Leon Draisaitl’s forearm midway through that game, but he’s fine. Winger Vladimir Tarasenko, who missed Wednesday’s practice with a minor medical issue, skated with everybody else Thursday morning.

Tropical moisture continues to soak Florida. Here’s what’s next

ORLANDO, Fla. – The same system that has brought days of tropical rain to Central Florida continues to pull away as it heads into the open waters of the Atlantic.

As the area tracks east-northeast, a stationary front across North Florida will sag south across Central Florida, keeping the deep tropical moisture in place across much of the state.

The chance for rain and storms on Thursday and Friday will increase to 70-80% after the lunchtime hour with some storms becoming strong.

Heavy rainfall continues to be the primary weather threat for the rest of the week, with locally heavy excessive rainfall possible. With those stronger storms, there will be a chance for accumulations of 1-3 inches, with isolated amounts up to 4 inches.

Before the rain returns, highs will creep back to near 90 degrees.

By the weekend, models remain in good agreement that storm coverage will back down a bit to 30-40% with a few scattered showers and storms developing by the afternoon.

Temperatures will be seasonal through Father’s Day, with afternoon highs in the upper 80s to low 90s.

Area No. 1: Invest 90L, an area of low pressure near the east coast of Florida is producing a large swath of tropical downpours across the Sunshine State.

Some gradual development is possible while the system continues to track further from the coastline.

The National Hurricane Center gives the area a 20% chance of further development over the next two to seven days.

Area No. 2: An area of low pressure is still expected to develop over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico by this weekend.

Conditions remain favorable for development with the possibility that a tropical depression could form by next week as it approaches Texas and Mexico.

Doctors on vacation help save 15-year-old shark attack victim

A group of doctors vacationing in Florida rushed to help a teen girl who was attacked by a shark on Friday.

The incident happened at Rosemary Beach in Walton County. Two 15-year-old girls were in waist-deep water with some friends when they were attacked, the South Walton Fire District said.

One of the girls suffered serious injuries to her upper leg and hand, while the other girl had only minor foot injuries, according to officials.

Ryan Forbess and Mohammad Ali are both doctors and friends who vacation in the area every summer with their families. They were boogie boarding with their kids when they heard people panicking on the shore, the pair told Nexstar’s WKRG.

“We all started running out of the water,” Forbess said. “I grabbed my son. He grabbed his daughter, and then I looked over to the left as we were getting to the beach, and I saw cloudy red water from the shark attack.”

When they got back to the shore, their medical training kicked in immediately. Some EMTs and trauma nurses, who were also on vacation, ran over to help as well.

The group tied tourniquets on the teen’s leg and hand and applied pressure to her wounds.

“When I looked down at her and saw the severity of the injury, I realized that anybody with any kind of medical knowledge needed to help,” Ali said.

Forbess and Ali said they didn’t know the other medical professionals who helped the girl, but at the time, it didn’t matter because they all had one goal in mind: saving her life.

“We might’ve as well worked with them for years,” Forbess said. “It was amazing. Kind of … it was God’s will that everyone was there to help at the same time.”

Forbes and Ali talked to the family after the girl was admitted to the hospital. They are told she is expected to survive.

Less than two hours before this attack, officials said a 45-year-old woman was bitten by a shark near WaterSound Beach, located about 2 miles away from Rosemary Beach. She had critical injuries on her midsection and arm, and part of her arm had to be amputated, South Walton Fire Chief Ryan Crawford said at a news briefing. She was flown to a trauma center.

On Saturday, Walton County sheriff’s deputies patrolling the waters in a boat spotted a 14-foot hammerhead shark near Santa Rosa Beach, which they said is not unusual. Sheriff’s officials say they don’t know what type of shark attacked the swimmers on Friday.

“We want to reiterate that sharks are always present in the Gulf,” the sheriff’s office said in a Saturday post on social media. “Swimmers and beachgoers should be cautious when swimming and stay aware of their surroundings.”

Shark attacks are rare , according to experts. There were 69 unprovoked bites last year worldwide, and 10 of those were fatal, according to the  University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File . That was higher than the recent average of six deaths per year.

Virginia Basketball to Visit Florida in 2024 ACC/SEC Challenge

A big piece of the non-conference schedule for the 2024-2025 Virginia men's basketball season has been revealed, as UVA will visit Florida on Wednesday, December 4th as part of the 2024 ACC/SEC Challenge, as announced on Wednesday afternoon.

This will be the second year in a row that Virginia and Florida square off in non-conference play. The Cavaliers and Gators met in a neutral site game at Spectrum Center in Charlotte in 2023, with UVA prevailing in a 73-70 thriller in the second game of the season. Now, these two teams will meet again, this time at Exactech Arena in Gainesville on December 4th, 2024. Virginia and Florida have split the four all-time meetings between the two programs. UVA defeated Florida 62-56 in the 1992 NIT semifinals at Madison Square Garden, but suffered a pair of lopsided losses to the Gators in the 2012 and 2017 NCAA Tournaments before evening the series at 2-2 by beating Florida in Charlotte last season.

In the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge in 2024, Virginia defeated Texas A&M 59-47 in Charlottesville. The first-ever ACC/SEC Challenge ended in a 7-7 tie.

With Virginia drawing Florida in the second annual ACC/SEC Challenge, we now have information on eight of UVA's non-conference games for the 2024-2025 season. As previously announced, Virginia will compete in the 2024 Baha Mar Hoops Bahamas Championship in November during the week of Thanksgiving. UVA will be joined by Baylor, Tennessee, and St. John's in the four-team tournament, which will be held at the Baha Mar Convention, Arts & Entertainment Center in Nassau. Virginia will face Villanova in a neutral-site game on Friday, November 15th at CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore. The game will be played as part of a double-header for the Hall of Fame Series Baltimore with Penn State taking on Virginia Tech in the other game. UVA will host Memphis on December 18th in the return game of a home-and-home series. The Tigers defeated the Cavaliers 77-54 in Memphis last season. Virginia also reportedly has home games scheduled against Campbell (Nov. 6), Coppin State (Nov. 11), and American (Dec. 22).
