film tourist trophy

Movie Review: Tourist Trophy

Fear is the most primal of human emotions. It’s the most powerful feeling in the world, regulating one’s every move and thought, lest it be their last.

Fear and the Isle of Man go hand-in-hand. It is a place reserved for a different breed of motorcycle rider, a place that brings not just fear but equals it out with an adrenalin kick unattainable anywhere else this side of a wingman suit or illicit drugs.

Those who race the Isle of Man know what they’re doing, they know the risks, and they know the consequence if it all goes wrong. This breed of person you don’t meet often in everyday life, and this is one of the primary features of the new movie, Tourist Trophy .

film tourist trophy

This is the first feature-length film since the roaringly successful Closer To The Edge epic of 2011 that the now retired Guy Martin made his own, so Tourist Trophy has some big shoes to fill. The TT has changed much since that time over a decade ago, but then, it hasn’t changed at all, and that’s one of the endearing factors of the race.

Tourist Trophy focuses on six riders and their individual tales from the 37 ¾ mile street course. Rookie and young father Glenn Irwin on the factory Honda, his teammate and 23-time TT winner John McGuinness, the current master of the TT, Peter Hickman, sidecar brothers Ben and Tom Birchall, and Michael “Jack” Russell, who attempted to become the first man in TT history to finish every single event in a year—Superbike, Superstock, Super Twins, Supersport, Sidecar, and the Senior TT.

Tourist Trophy has some exceptional videography scattered throughout. The onboard shots are as close as you will get to actually being on the motorcycle, and the brilliant slow-motion shots really show the hammering the motorcycles take during a given race.

Listening to how Peter Hickman attacks the course, or how McGuinness ensures his mind is firmly on the job is enthralling as he taps into a level of concentration few humans will ever attain. Another part that really got me was Glenn Irwin’s reaction after his first laps of the TT course, a feeling I know only too well as I was a rookie with him this year, too.

Movie Review: Tourist Trophy

Michael “Jack” Russell is, for me, the man of the film. This is what the TT is about, grafters who put everything on the line simply to compete, with no real hope of getting a major result. The privateers are what make the TT what it is, and Russell’s never-say-die approach is the highlight of the movie.

However, what Tourist Trophy does not do is adequately convey the bad side of the TT, which is just as important as the heroics performed on the track. Six riders (Mark Purslow, sidecar duo Cesar Chanal and Olivier Lavorel, Davy Morgan, and father and son sidecar pairing Roger and Bradley Stockton) lost their lives this year. The film does not mention either their names or the fact there were fatalities at all until towards the end of the film, which I thought was a shame and to the detriment of the film.

This fact took some of the shine off an otherwise very good movie. Tourist Trophy shows the TT in its best light, and you can’t blame the directors for that. I would have liked a cameo from the man primarily responsible for making the TT the incredible event that it is in Paul Phillips, the man who has done so much to ensure the longevity and safety of the most dangerous race in the world as his insight into the race would have given the movie a slightly different angle. And to have the rookie liaison officers of John Barton and the hilarious Richard ‘Milky’ Quale, not on camera was a bummer.

Tourist Trophy will doubtless bring new fans into the fold, which is objective number one for a film such as this. All criticisms aside, it’s a great watch and will likely leave you with that sudden urge to check your annual leave to see the event and experience the fear for yourself.

Tourist Trophy is free to watch on TT+, the TT’s free-to-register digital platform, and streams from 19:30 GMT on Wednesday, November 23, 2022.

Channing Tatum and Brad Pitt

Channing Tatum and Brad Pitt feel the need for speed.

The two A-listers and their respective companies have teamed up with a coterie of production banners to produce both a docuseries and a feature film centered on the famous and dangerous Isle of Man Tourist Trophy motorcycle races.

The production banners will take these projects out as a package later this year, according to Tuesday’s announcement by the companies. Mediawan, the European media company and majority stakeholder of Plan B, will be the studio of the docuseries and handle international sales.

Isle of Man TT began in 1907 on the island nation that sits between Ireland and the UK, and minus two world wars, has run almost continuously since. A single lap of the course is made up of 37.7 miles across the island’s public road systems as the bikes tackle country lanes and city streets at speeds up to 200mph, according to the producers.

The docuseries began production this week. Titled The Greatest Race On Earth , it will focus on the Isle of Man TT race, which some have called one of the most dangerous competitions on the planet and is being held in June this year. Box to Box Films, behind racing doc shows Drive to Survive and Tour de France: Unchained , is producing along with Plan B, Free Association, Entertainment 360 and Keller.

That same group will also develop a feature film package to take to market later this year. It is unclear whether Keller, who co-wrote the script for the Oscar-nominated 2019 racing movie Ford v Ferrari , will pen the script for the Isle of Man project.

The other producers were equally enthused in their statements.

Pitt is already in the racing movie business, as he is currently shooting an untitled F1 feature that Joseph Kosinski is directing. Pitt stars in the movie, and he and Plan B are producers on it. Free Association has Blink Twice , Zoe Kravitz’s directorial debut, hitting theaters Aug. 23 from Amazon MGM. Casady was most recently a producer on the well-regarded and well-reviewed romantic adventure movie The Fall Guy.

Production on the docuseries entitled The Greatest Race On Earth has commenced this week and will center on the Isle of Man TT races held in June of this year. Box To Box Films, the preeminent sports documentary producer, will produce along with Plan B, Free Association, Entertainment 360, and Jason Keller.

“We are honored to have the opportunity to share the story of the exceptional people involved in this singular event and to introduce The Isle of Man TT in a way that brings audiences directly into the action. We are supremely grateful to Mediawan and all of our partners for their belief and support,” reads a statement from Plan B.

The Greatest Race on Earth, the docuseries, is to be distributed worldwide by Mediawan Rights with the participation of Entourage Ventures.

“It’s a great privilege to be working with these partners on this extremely unique project. The Isle of Man TT is one of the most visceral, exhilarating and unusual races in the motorsport diary. We can’t wait to bring this incredible world to new audiences,” said James Gay-Rees, co-Founder of Box To Box Films.

Taking place on a small island nation in the Irish Sea, the race traces its heritage back to the early 1900s when road racing was outlawed in England, and racers found refuge on the Isle of Man. A single lap of the course is made up of 37.7 miles across the island’s road systems as the bikes tackle country lanes and city streets at speeds up to 200mph. It is the oldest, most dangerous, and arguably the greatest race on earth.

“It’s extremely exciting to be part of this project about the incredible adventure of the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT), the most incredible and craziest race on earth. Alongside such talented partners as Plan B, Box to Box and Free Association, we are thrilled to help bring to life this amazing series. It is fully in line with our strategy to offer compelling shows that will captivate audiences all across the globe. We are confident that such an iconic competition and its’ behind the scenes will do so,” Pierre-Antoine Capton, CEO and co-founder of Mediawan.

Tatum, Carolin and Free Association are repped by CAA, Hansen Jacobson. Plan B is repped by CAA and Brecheen Feldman Breimer Silver & Thompson. Box To Box Films is repped by CAA. Keller is repped by Entertainment 360.

Channing Tatum, Brad Pitt, Jason Keller and Guymon Casady Partner on Docuseries and Film About Isle of Man TT Motorcycle Race

A docuseries and film about the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy motorcycle race is in development, and some big names are involved. The project comes from Channing Tatum's Free Association, Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment, "Ford v. Ferrari" writer Jason Keller , Entertainment 360's Guymon Casady and Box To Box Films. The latter company is known for producing buzzy sports documentaries such as "Drive To Survive," "Full Swing" and "Tour De France: Unchained."

These projects will appear as a package later this year. The independent European studio Mediawan, which is also the majority stakeholder of Plan B, will be the studio behind the docuseries and will handle international sales.

Production will begin this week on the docuseries, which is titled "The Greatest Race on Earth." It will focus on the Isle of Man TT races taking place this June. The group is also developing a screenplay for a major feature film package, which will be taken to market later this year.

Called one of the most dangerous and extreme racing events in the world, the Isle of Man TT takes place on the small island nation in the Irish Sea. It involves a 37.7 mile course through mountainous terrain, country lanes and city streets with speeds of up to 200 miles per hour. Between its inaugural race in 1907 and 2023, there have been 156 fatalities during either official practices or races.

"It's a great privilege to be working with these partners on this extremely unique project. The Isle of Man TT is one of the most visceral, exhilarating and unusual races in the motorsport diary. We can't wait to bring this incredible world to new audiences," James Gay-Rees, co-founder of Box To Box Films, said in a statement to press.

"We dare anyone to find more awe-inspiring people, or a more breathtakingly vibrant world than The Isle of Man TT," Free Association principles Channing Tatum, Reid Carolin and Peter Kiernan, said in a statement. "We've always been drawn to characters who push the edge of what's possible, and this race is their Shangri-La. We're deeply honored to be part of the creative dream team telling the story of this legendary event, and can't wait to finally share this mythical sport we love with audiences all across the globe."

Additionally, representatives for Plan B said they were "honored" to be part of this project, and Pierre-Antoine Capton, CEO and co-founder of Mediawan, called the collaboration "extremely exciting."

"It is fully in line with our strategy to offer compelling shows that will captivate audiences all across the globe. We are confident that such an iconic competition and its' behind the scenes will do so," Capton added.
