Because life's too short to stay home …, autumn in the studios, on fall art tours, treasure hunters strike gold..

In September and October, artists everywhere throw open their studio doors, inviting the public to see some fall colors along with fine art.

It's tempting because of the scenic landscapes in which so many artists live: the bluffs of northeast Iowa, the coulees of southwest Wisconsin, the towns around Lake Pepin, the lumpy terrain of the Ice Age Trail.

"This is such a pretty area in the fall, and we thought it would be nice to have a tour where people could travel through it," says potter Diana Johnston, who helped found southwest Wisconsin's Fall Art Tour, the region's oldest.

The tours are free, and many artists demonstrate their craft and provide music and treats. It's not like shopping at the mall, that's for sure.

"You can get a slice of someone's life and see just what they do out there," Johnston says. "You can go home with a piece of art and have a story to go with it."

Trip Tips: Fall studio tours in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa

Sept. 22-24, Art Wander Studio Tour on the southwest fringe of Minneapolis. Visit 40 artists in 19 studios around Chanhassen, Chaska, Carver, Waconia, Watertown, Mayer and Cologne.

Sept. 22-24, Lake Superior 20/20 Studio Art Tour between Two Harbors and Duluth. Visit 34 artists in 13 host studios or farms along the 20 miles between these towns on Minnesota's North Shore of Lake Superior.

Sept. 22-Oct. 1, Art Along the Lake Fall Studio Tour on Lake Superior's North Shore, with 30 artists at studios in Tofte, Lutsen, Grand Marais and Hovland.

Sept. 29-Oct. 1, Meander, the Upper Minnesota River Art Crawl features 40 artists at more than 30 studios in and around Ortonville, Appleton, Madison, Milan, Dawson, Montevideo and Granite Falls in western Minnesota.

Sept. 29-Oct. 1, Northeast Iowa Artists' Studio Tour , features 38 artists at 28 sites around Decorah, Burr Oak, St. Lucas, Waukon, West Union, Cresco, New Albin, Lansing, Elgin and Clermont.

Sept. 30-Oct. 1, Falling Leaves Art Studio Tour in western Wisconsin, with 30 artists at studios in and around Augusta, Fairchild and Osseo, southeast of Eau Claire.

Oct. 6-8, Studio ArTour , with artists at 19 studios in and around Farmington, Northfield, Nerstrand and Faribault in south-central Minnesota.

Oct. 6-8, Hidden Studios Art Tour along the Ice Age Trail in central Wisconsin, with 18 artists in seven studios in Almond, Amherst Junction, Iola and Waupaca.

Oct. 6-8, Fall Fresh Art Tour , with artists at 21 studios along the Wisconsin side of Lake Pepin, from Bay City to Durand and Pepin.

Oct. 6-8, Northwoods Art Tour in northeast Wisconsin, with artists at studios in and around Manitowish Waters, Boulder Junction, Minocqua and Eagle River.

Oct. 7-8, Blue Coast Artists Studio Tours between South Haven and Saugatuck, Mich. Visit artists at 12 studios along Lake Michigan, with detours to farm markets, orchards and wineries.

Oct. 7-8, Artisans Road Trip in northwest Iowa, with artists in and around Storm Lake, Spirit Lake, Okoboji, Spencer and Estherville.

Oct. 13-15, Covered Bridge Studio Tour in eastern Wisconsin, with more than 60 artists in Cedarburg, Grafton, Port Washington, Mequon, Thiensville and Newburg.

Oct. 13-15, Twenty Dirty Hands Pottery Tour, with artists at studios and a wood kiln in and around the northwest Illinois towns of Galena and Elizabeth.

Oct. 20-22, Southwest Wisconsin Fall Art Tour , with artists at studios between Mineral Point, Spring Green, Dodgeville and Baraboo. This tour, started in 1994, is very popular; reserve lodgings early.

Oct. 21-22, Sturgeon Bay Art Crawl in Sturgeon Bay, Wis. Visit nearly 40 artists in and around the gateway to Door County.

Oct. 28-29, Earth, Wood & Fire Artist Tour east of Madison, with artists in and around Lake Mills, Cambridge and Fort Atkinson.

Nov. 10-12, Art Attack in Minneapolis. Visit more than 350 artists in their studios at the four-floor Northrup King Building in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District.

Galleries, Art Fairs, and Festivals On The Wisconsin Great River Road

Pump House Regional Arts Center The Pump House Regional Arts Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin is an arts and culture center on the Wisconsin Great River Road located in the historic downtown area of the city. The Pump House has a mission of cultivating the visual, literary and performing arts in the La Crosse community by providing admission free galleries and diverse art programming for all ages and skill levels. Their building houses 3 art galleries, a 140 seat theatre, an art classroom with a poetry studio, and other meeting spaces that are open to the public. You can visit the Pump House to spend some time in the galleries looking at the art, catch a show in the theatre, or attend a class or workshop such as their popular Pump House Paint & Pour workshop, pottery classes, and more. The Pump House Regional Arts center also hosts the annual Artspire Art Fair & Sale each summer in La Crosse, highlighting local area artists and bringing the community together for a great event.

Alma Music and Arts Festival Every Labor Day weekend, Wisconsin Great River Road travelers can stop in Alma, WI for the Alma Music and Arts Festival. Held at the Alma Beach and Marina right on the banks of the Mississippi River, the festival brings together the community for live music, food, art, and family-friendly activities. Local artists and artisans will have their art and goods for sale, and kids can enjoy face painting and other crafts and activities. Festival goers can also look forward to live performances by local musicians and various food vendors for a full day of art, music, food, and fun on the Mississippi.

Stockholm Art Fair In Stockholm, WI art enthusiasts can enjoy the annual Stockholm Art Fair, a summertime tradition that has taken place on the shores of Lake Pepin for over 40 years. The art fair features over 100 artists and their works of art ranging from paintings, jewelry, clay, and photography to glass, sculpture, fiber, wood, leather, and more. Many of the artists are locally or regionally based, so the art fair is also a great opportunity to support local artists by purchasing one of their pieces and finding out more about their work. You can enjoy the view of Lake Pepin in Stockholm Village Park while strolling through the art booths, trying food from local vendors, and listening to a diverse line-up of regionally based musicians.

Fall Fresh Art Tour The Fall Fresh Art Tour across Pepin and Pierce counties is an epic three day art excursion near the Wisconsin Great River Road. The tour travels to twenty one different home art studios and galleries throughout the two counties, winding through scenic back roads in the countryside during peak fall colors. The tour is self-guided, so you can travel at your own pace, and highlights twenty one area artists each year showcasing their unique works of art. The Fall Fresh Art Tour is a great way to enjoy the beauty of fall in Wisconsin and the touring the picturesque villages of the two counties while supporting local artists and viewing inspiring art.

Stockholm, WI welcomes you to visit their little river town steeped in its Swedish roots, where you will discover a small village with a big culture and an even bigger heart. Although our village is home to fewer than eighty people, many artists and craftsmen have been drawn here making Stockholm a haven of handcrafted and homemade goods.  Combined with its small-town charm and a welcoming community, Stockholm is a cozy hub for arts, culture, and people on the Great River Road. We love all that West Coast of Wisconsin has to offer and we know you will too.  

On the banks of Lake Pepin, Stockholm plays host to many events throughout the year and with several events spaces, music and artistry abound. And let’s not forget the food! Farm to table, fresh from the baker’s hands, and french inspired wine and cheese are a few types of the selections available to you.

The Artist Application deadline ended April 1, 2024 — thanks to all the artists who have applied! It’s going to be a stellar 50th show!

On Saturday, July 20, 2024, join us in Stockholm, Wisconsin where the Stockholm Art Fair will be celebrating its FIFTIETH YEAR, making it THE SUMMER EVENT to attend! The fair will feature over ninety new and returning artists who have been juried into a spectacular one-day festival in the beautiful, shade-covered Stockholm Village Park on the shores of Lake Pepin. The artists selected to participate will represent a wide range of mediums such as pottery, sculpture, jewelry, painting, printmaking, photography, fiber, wood, glass and folk art — there will be something for every fairgoer!

The visual arts will be complemented with a great lineup of talented musical performers gracing the stage throughout the day and a select group of food vendors will be providing quality meals and treats on site. Adding to the family-friendly fun will be a children’s artmaking-activity booth plus the usual greeter characters and friendly folks who volunteer to entertain and guide our guests.

As always, there will be a FREE parking area with a continuous shuttle on Mill Street, about 3 blocks north of Highway 35 and just up the hill from the art fair (there will be abundant signs). The shuttle is free, but we encourage donations to help us create the best event for your enjoyment. There will also be limited $15 parking (cash only) next to the art fair on the southwest side of Highway 35, and handicapped parking is also available upon request.

Our 50th will be extra special, so bring your family and friends — we’ll look forward to seeing you!
