Does your cruise call at Le Havre , France? If you’re lucky enough to stop off in our home town, here’s a guide full of tips and our selection of the best attractions in the cruise port of Le Havre over the course of a day: architecture, nature, history, art, shopping, games… Stay in town or explore Normandy with one of the shore excursions from Le Havre.

visit le Havre cruise port

1. Explore Le Havre or go on an excursion?

It depends on what you want to see and your criteria: price, time on the road… Here are the pros and cons of each option.

Why choose to visit Le Havre?

  • Surprising modernist architecture, listed by Unesco. The town was rebuilt by Auguste Perret after being destroyed during the Second World War.
  • Seafront, with beach (but sand only at low tide)
  • Works of art in the city
  • No time wasted on the road
  • A city that inspired Impressionist painters
  • It’s not typical French architecture, not the image you get of France when you come from abroad.

Why choose excursions from Le Havre?

  • Excursions can take you to some of the most famous places in Normandy and even France: Honfleur, Etretat, Mont-Saint-Michel, D-Day beaches, Rouen, Giverny…
  • Places of great historical value
  • See options on Getyourguide or Viator or our list with tips
  • Larger budget
  • Honfleur, Etretat and Rouen are less than an hour’s drive away, but the other sites are much further, so you’ll spend more time in transport than on site.

In section 10 of this article, we present the options in greater detail.

2. How do I get to the center from the cruise terminal? Distance, shuttle

The Terminal (which is currently being rebuilt) is not far from the city center. You can reach downtown Le Havre:

  • on foot: the walk is flat, partly in the port and partly in the city – one of the sites of interest closest to the cruise terminal is the container arch (not far from the MUMA museum). It’s a 25-minute walk to reach it.
  • by cab: about 10 euros (but there aren’t many cabs or Ubers in the city)
  • with your cruise line’s shuttle: MSC, Royal and Aida have a shuttle
  • with the Bee-Le-Havre Shuttle: if you book a tour with them, they have a free shuttle at 10am.

3. Things to do in Le Havre cruise port: the must-sees

In one day in Le Havre, you can see:

  • Perret architecture in reinforced concrete
  • The astonishing Saint Joseph’s Church , with its 107-metre-high hollow tower and 12,768 blown-colour tiles
  • The MuMa Museum , which is glazed to delicately bring the skies and light of Normandy into the works of the painters on display.
  • Le Havre Cathedral , one of the few buildings spared from the destruction of World War II (with elements from the 16th and 17th centuries)
  • The waterfront, which inspired many Impressionist artists, with a long, car-free promenade
  • The many works of art in town, especially the arches of colorful containers and the UP3 statue on the beach.
  • Les Halles centrales, a small covered market in the city center
  • Street art, including the Le Gouzou character by artist Jace

Find out more in our article on Le Havre’s top attractions . And see our suggested 1-day walking itinerary, further on in the article.

4. Free activities in Le Havre

You can admire the architecture, stroll along the waterfront, discover the works of art, enjoy the many children’s play areas, see how the French shop at Les Halles Centrales covered market… If you like walking, you can also climb up to the Hanging Gardens, set on a former military fort with views over the city. Access is free (except for greenhouses).

5. Getting around Le Havre

Option 1: on foot Downtown Le Havre is very accessible. It’s very flat, with lots of wide sidewalks. Only in certain parts of the upper town are the roads on a slope: to get to the orientation table, the hanging gardens or the Sainte-Adresse bunkers.

Option 2: by bike At the cruise terminal, it is possible to rent bicycles

Option 3: local buses But you can’t buy tickets on board. You need to find a purchase terminal.

Option 4: Tourist bus The Bee-Le-Havre company has a bus that gives a guided tour of the town (but it’s not a hop-on-hop-off).

6. Where to shop in Le Havre

If you want to go shopping in Le Havre, you have several options:

  • stores in downtown Le Havre, with unique décor, jewelry and clothing boutiques (as well as souvenir stores)
  • the Coty shopping center, with a wide range of clothes, but only well-known brands
  • Les Docks shopping center

Find out more in our article on shopping in Le Havre .

7. What to do with children in Le Havre

If you’re visiting Le Havre with children, they should love the container arch and the architecture of Le Volcan (the big white building at the heart of the city). And there are plenty of playgrounds in the town center for all ages. We’ve listed them in this article , along with their addresses and game types.

8. Where to get coffee in the morning?

For lovers of coffee, croissants and other French delights, here are a few suggestions.

Take the time to visit one of our roasters. Le Havre has been the world’s leading coffee-importing port since 1815, and was even number one until the 1930s. The city has preserved its roasting know-how.

For example, the Duchossoy burner installed in Le Havre since 1950, which offers a wide range, or the coffee shop “Ombra Coffee Roaster” in the pedestrian streets, which has been offering specialty coffees since 2019.

Ombra torrefacteur

And to buy good products to enjoy:

  • croissants or baguettes: we recommend the Portier bakery around Les Halles Centrales
  • macaroons: we recommend the Auzou chocolate shop around Les Halles Centrales
  • Artisanal ice creams: we recommend the Hautot chocolate factory, near Halles Centrales.

Please note that many stores are closed on Mondays, and many take vacations during the first 15 days of August.

9. Where to eat lunch?

In Les Havre, you’ll find many different restaurants: brasseries, Michelin-starred restaurants, world cuisine, crêperies… Among our favorites:

  • Restaurant Calice et Mandibule : Claire and Manu’s canteen, with a menu that blends local Normandy produce with Senegalese and Moroccan flavours.
  • Restaurant Le Margote: creative bistronomic cuisine from a chef who loves Normandy produce
  • Restaurant Jean-Luc Tartarin: Michelin-starred gourmet cuisine with precision and mastery

Many are closed on Mondays. And reservations are recommended.

See our article on the best restaurants in Le Havre .

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Normandy

  • Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
  • Choose a car that is comfortable enough (distances can be long) but compact (some parking lots and villages are narrow).
  • Think of the complete insurance (some roads are tortuous and narrow).
  • There is a lot of demand, book it early .

excursions le havre

How to get there?

  • Rent a car for the day: 45min drive
  • Most cruises offer excursions to Honfleur, sometimes combined with Deauville.
  • Or you can book an excursion on Getyourguide – see program and availability
  • Bee Le Havre also offers excursions
  • You can also get to Le Havre station. Buses run between Le Havre and Honfleur (via the Pont de Normandie). This is line 122 . But be sure to leave enough time to get back. The bus does not drop you off at the cruise port.
  • Or book a private shuttle: see details and availability

Visiting Étretat from Le Havre

One of our favorite places to visit in Normandy is Etretat, known for its impressive white cliffs and needle-shaped rock formation. And as French people, we grew up with the stories of the fictional character Arsène Lupin, who hid his treasure inside. The heart of the town has charming old houses typical of the area and from the beach you can climb the cliffs on both sides for incredible views.

Le Havre excursions - Etretat

  • You can take the 509R bus, which runs every hour or hour and a half. It takes 1 hour each way. Please allow plenty of time to return to the boat. He leaves and returns to the bus station.

Visit the D-Day landing beaches from Le Havre

Those interested in the history of the war can take a shore excursion from Le Havre to visit the landing beaches and some of the World War II monuments.

However, you should be aware that you’ll be spending a lot of time in transit. Omaha Beach is a two-hour drive from Le Havre, so you’ll need to allow at least 4 hours’ travel time in a day.

American-friendly tours include Omaha Beach, Pointe du Hoc, the Overlord Museum and the American Cemetery. See program and book

Canadian-friendly tours include Juno Beach, the Canadian Cemetery and Abbaye d’Ardenne. See program and book

Visiting Rouen from Le Havre

Rouen is a cultural and historical city. In terms of historical buildings, it is the most fascinating to visit. It has a high concentration of listed buildings and just walking around is fascinating. And its cathedral is one of the most impressive in Normandy and France, and has played an important role in history. Find out more in our Rouen article .

  • Taking the train from Le Havre station

Visiting Paris from Le Havre

Paris is a two-hour drive from Le Havre, if there are no traffic jams. So 2h30 to 3h often. Personally, we don’t recommend a trip to Paris for the few hours you have in Le Havre. You’ll spend several hours on the road, but only 4 hours discovering this immense city…

Le Havre excursions - paris

Visiting Mont-Saint-Michel from Le Havre

Mont-Saint-Michel is a 2? hour drive from Le Havre, if there are no traffic jams. Personally, we don’t recommend an excursion to Mont-Saint-Michel for the few hours you have in Le Havre. You’ll spend several hours on the road, for only 3 hours this place…

Mont-Saint-Michel

11. What to do when it rains in Le Havre

Le Havre is not as humid as other parts of Normandy, but the city is located in the north of France, by the sea, and therefore receives frequent showers. If it doesn’t rain much, I recommend wearing a good poncho and still enjoying the sunny day program. And you never know, the rain may stop. The main areas you can still enjoy on a rainy day:

  • The underground of the Volcano and its library
  • The rue de Paris because it has covered passages for window shopping and the cathedral
  • The MuMa Museum
  • Les Halles Centrales, a covered market

12. Departure or arrival in Le Havre: best hotels

If you decide to spend a night in Le Havre before or after your trip, here’s our selection of the best hotels:

WHERE TO STAY IN Le Havre

Our favorites: neighborhoods and hotels

On the waterfront:

Hilton Hotel with its modern decor and balconies – see prices, photos and availability .

Downtown, in the heart of Perret architecture:

Hôtel Pasino, for ultra-spacious rooms – See prices, photos and availability

Hotel Vent d’Ouest, a charming place to stay – See prices, photos and availability

  • Tipping is not mandatory. At the restaurant, you can leave a few euros if you are very satisfied with the service.
  • The European emergency number is 112
  • Sunday is a day of rest in France, stores are closed, except food stores, until lunchtime. The Muma Museum is normally open.
  • Many stores and museums may be closed on Mondays (the Muma Museum is closed).
  • If you’re looking for clothes, a few stores should be open on Mondays and Sundays at the Docks (not the same direction as downtown).
  • It is a large seaport, so English is common, but some French people will not speak English at all.

The ULTIMATE guide to Le Havre Shore Excursions (UPDATED 2024)

Explore Le Havre Tours & Shore Excursions

Why take a shore excursion from le havre.

Nestled in France, Le Havre cruise port welcomes countless cruise ship passengers each year. While the city has its allure, many travelers find that the true magic of France lies located just beyond Le Havre. Whether it's the iconic sights of Paris or the hallowed grounds of Normandy, a Le Havre shore excursion can open doors to unforgettable experiences.

Tours Distance & Duration

Considering the Le Havre shore excursion? Well, you might wonder how long the ride to the main spots will be. Paris, the famous city of love and lights, is just a 2.5-hour drive away from Le Havre. It sounds like some time, but hey, it's Paris!

Now, if history's more your thing, the Normandy beaches are even closer - just 2 hours away. This shore trip takes you back to D-Day, the day when the bravery of American soldiers and their actions changed the outcome of World War II.

With a good Le Havre tour, the time on the road will seem short when you think of the great moments you'll have. And the best thing? You'll have fun at these great places and still get back to your cruise ship in good time, with a heart full of memories.

Which Shore Excursion to choose?

Choosing a Le Havre shore excursion is like opening a book with two incredible chapters. First, there's Paris, buzzing with life and filled with iconic landmarks, like the Eiffel Tower. Then, there's Normandy with its serene beaches, reminding us of the brave souls from D-Day. We've got full-day tours to both spots. Dive into the vibrant energy of Paris or take a moment to reflect on the historic Normandy beaches. Each shore excursion offers its own kind of magic, ensuring a day well spent. Whether it's the charm of Paris or the rich history of Normandy, there's something special waiting for you.

But how to decide which chapter to explore? No worries! In the next parts, we'll talk more about these choices and give you all the info you need to easily pick what's best for you. Stick around, and by the end, you'll have a clearer idea of which shore excursion ticks all your boxes, making your Le Havre cruise port stop memorable.

While this option is pricier, it's ideal for travelers seeking a more personalized touch during their shore excursion.

Choosing the Perfect Le Havre Shore Excursion

With limited time on hand, selecting the right shore excursion becomes paramount. The challenge? Ensuring you experience the best that France has to offer within your brief window.

Want to see D-Day's historic Normandy beaches or Paris's big attractions? It's hard to choose if you're spending only 1 day in Le Havre, but we're here to help. In the following paragraphs, we'll discuss what you can expect on our two types of tours -one to Normandy's D-Day sites and the other one to Paris's lively heart.

Why choose Normandy Beaches Shore Excursion over Paris?

Walking through world war ii's big moments.

Everyone knows Paris is filled with fancy buildings and lights, but taking a trip from Le Havre to the Normandy beaches is like stepping right into a history book. It's not just any history, but the brave stories from World War II. You'll get to see and feel places where real-life heroes did incredible things, the place where the

Why choose Le Havre to Paris Shore Excursion over Normandy Beaches?

Imagine taking a break with a coffee in a cozy Parisian café, snapping photos with the city's iconic landmarks behind you.

On the other hand, Normandy is all about deep history, reflecting on brave heroes, and understanding WWII's impact. It's more solemn and makes you think. But Paris? Paris is about the joy of now. Le Havre Cruise Port Guide | 7 Best Things To Do In Le Havre Port

Le Havre, Normandy, France

Le Havre cruise port is one of the major ports in France, located in northern France’s Normandy region, where the Seine River meets the English Channel on the Atlantic Coast. It is one of the most popular cruise destinations due to its proximity to Paris (200 km/125 miles), Normandy beaches (145 km/90 miles), Rouen (92 km/57 miles), Mont Saint-Michel (220 km/137 miles) and other popular French destinations. In this article, read about:

  • Le Havre cruise port (Le Havre cruise terminal, getting around, useful tips)

Le Havre Cruise Port

Le Havre port is France’s largest containership port and its second-largest cargo port (after Marseille ). The port consists of a series of canal-like docks and is operated by the national agency “Grand Port Maritime du Havre”. Port of Le Havre is also a popular port of call due to its developed port facilities and capacity to accommodate the world’s largest cruise liners.

Cruise Terminal Le Havre (Terminal Croisière Le Havre) is located at the site called Pointe de Floride (Florida tip). The terminal consists of two docking piers located on Quay Roger Meunier and Quay Pierre Callet . The terminal building features facilities including a Tourist information office, free wi-fi, a couple of shops, security screening, check-in counters, a passenger lounge area, a taxi rank and car rental options.

Le Havre city center is located 2 km/1.3 miles from Le Havre cruise terminal. The walk is on flat surfaces, however, it’s not very scenic as you need to go around the ferry terminal (port Le Havre regularly serves ferries to Portsmouth, UK) and Bassin de la Manche. It takes approximately a 25-minute walk to reach Le Havre downtown.

Alternatively, cruise lines/port authorities may offer shuttle bus transfers into the city, usually for an extra fee. Make sure you check this onboard before arriving at the port. Taxis are available in the terminal.

Le Havre port has announced projects to build three new terminals on the Pointe du Floride site and renovate the existing facilities. You can get updates on these projects at  https://www.havre-port.com/

Getting Around & Local Transportation

  • Shuttle buses are typically provided by the port authorities or a cruise line (usually for an extra fee) to Le Havre downtown. Shuttle buses stop at Le Volcan Arts Theater Complex and Espace Coty shopping mall.
  • Le Havre train station (Gare Le Havre) is the main railway station in Le Havre and is located 2.2 km/1.4 miles (a 30-minute walk) from Le Havre cruise terminal. It takes around 20 minutes walk to reach the train station if you walk there from Le Volcan. At Le Havre railway station you can catch trains to Paris, Rouen, Honfleur and other destinations. The trains in France are operated by SNCF (France’s national railway company) and you can check the timetables and prices on their official website https://www.sncf.com/
  • Le Havre bus station is located at the same place as the train station. Le Havre also has two tram routes and both lines serve the train/bus station.
  • Le Havre-Octeville Airport (Aéroport Le Havre-Louis Bleriot) is located only 8 km/5 miles north of Le Havre cruise port, however, the distance by car is 36 km/22 miles or a 35-minute drive.
  • Major cruise lines calling at Le Havre cruise port include Norwegian Cruise Line, Cunard Line, MSC Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and AmaWaterways (river cruises).
  • The currency in France is EURO (€). Local currency and credit cards are widely accepted.
  • Museums and shops in Le Havre may be closed on Mondays.

7 Best Things to Do in Le Havre Cruise Port

1. le havre.

The bustling city of Havre is best known for its unique post-WWII architecture and its UNESCO-listed city center. After the heavy 1944 bombings, the city needed to be quickly rebuilt and the renowned Belgian architect Auguste Perret was in charge of the project.

The majority of the buildings were built in reinforced concrete, which gave the city a somewhat grey and dim look. However, Le Havre is nowadays a vibrant city featuring amazing museums, a scenic public beach, great shopping opportunities, eateries and much more. While there, don’t miss out on visiting the Museum of Modern Art André Malraux (MuMa Musée d’art moderne André Malraux) which has the second most important collection of Impressionist paintings after the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.

The iconic St Joseph’s Church with its 110-meter high tower dates from 1950 and is a symbol of Le Havre representing the city’s rebirth after the war. The church was made of steel and concrete and offers outstanding panoramic views of the city.

St Joseph's Church, Le Havre cruise port

One of the most recognized structures in the city is the modern Le Volcan cultural center designed in the shape of a volcano. While in Le Havre, you can also visit the beautiful, 16th-century stone Le Havre Cathedral , Natural History Museum, or Graville Abbey with its museum housing one of the finest collections of medieval statuary in Normandy.

Le Havre cruise port is the main gateway to the French capital. Paris is located 200 km/124 miles (a 2-hour 30-minute drive) from the port of Le Havre each way. Due to the distance, the smart idea would be to visit Paris with a cruise ship organized shore excursion because the ship will wait for you in case the tour returns later than scheduled. However, cruise ship shore excursions are often too expensive, so booking a private round-trip transfer to Paris  or a tour with an independent tour operator may be a cheaper option.

Alternatively, you can go to Paris by train (which is not recommended as the trains in France are not always reliable, especially when the ship is in port for a day).

Cruise lines normally offer various shore excursions to Paris. Some of them are guided, while some of them are “On Your Own” options that offer a round-trip transfer with a few free hours to explore Paris on your own (you usually get 3-4 free hours). If you choose to explore Paris on your own, I highly suggest you read my article Paris in a Day: How to Plan a Perfect Day Trip to Paris from Le Havre where I share very useful tips and a full 4-hour itinerary that covers all the major landmarks of Paris!

Alexandre III bridge in Paris

Here are some of the Paris attractions not to be missed:

  • Arc de Triomphe – The iconic triumphal arch stands at Place de l’Étoile at the top of the Champs-Élysées. It was built in 1836 to commemorate those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. It has an observation deck from where you can admire the outstanding views of Paris.
  • Eiffel Tower – Gustave Eiffel’s 324-meter-high iron tower is the symbol of Paris and one of the most recognized landmarks in the world. It was constructed in the second half of the 19th century for the 1889 Exposition Universelle (the World’s Fair) and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tower offers the most spectacular views of the city and has three levels. It is highly recommended to visit the Eiffel Tower with a guided tour or to book the tickets in advance, as lines can be extremely long. The visit can take up to half a day depending on the queuing, so keep that in mind if you have limited time in the city.
  • Louvre – The world’s most visited museum is housed in a historic palace in the heart of Paris and boasts a huge art collection including some of the best-known works of art, such as Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. With its striking Louvre Pyramid, it is one of the most visited museums in the world so be prepared for long lines. It takes almost a full day to visit some of the major works of art so it’s highly recommended to purchase the tickets in advance or book a guided tour.
  • Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris – The impressive 12th-century cathedral is located on the Île de la Cité (an island in the Seine River) and is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in France.
  • Latin Quarter – Home to numerous medieval churches and museums, Panthéon, Sorbonne University and several higher education establishments, Latin Quarter is the oldest district in Paris known for student life and authentic vibe. Here, you can wander around its medieval streets filled with authentic cafes, eateries and bookshops or visit the famous Luxembourg Gardens situated nearby.
  • Orsay Museum (Musée d’Orsay) – Housed in a former railway station building, the museum features outstanding 19th and 20th-century European art collections. You need at least a couple of hours to visit the museum and it’s recommended to purchase the tickets in advance.

3. Normandy Beaches

Normandy is a historically important region because of the events that took place in 1944 when the Allied forces disembarked in Normandy to drive Nazis out of France. The beaches where the Allies disembarked are known as D-Day Landing Beaches and they extend over 70 km along the coast of Normandy. There are 5 of them:  Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juno and Sword Beach. The entire area consists of numerous WWII monuments, museums, cemeteries and memorials, and some of the most important are:

  • The Landing Beaches
  • Arromanches-Les-Bains
  • Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial
  • Pointe-du-Hoc Ranger Monument
  • Overlord Museum
  • German Battery of Longues-Sur-Mer
  • The Memorial Pegasus

You can read about each of these landmarks more in detail in my article 12 Gorgeous Places to Visit on a Cruise to Normandy

American Cemetery in Normandy

Cruise lines normally offer organized shore excursions to D-Day Beaches and these are full-day tours as the driving distance to the sites may take up to a few hours. If you decide to book a shore excursion, make sure you carefully check the itinerary as not all of the places listed above are included in each of the tours (it would take a few days to visit all the sites!).

Normally, tours dedicated to guests from the USA include Omaha Beach, Pointe du Hoc, Overlord Museum and the American Cemetery and Memorial, while the tours dedicated to Canadian guests include the visit to Juno Beach, Canadian Cemetery and Abbey d’Ardenne.

4. Mont Saint-Michel

The iconic Mont Saint-Michel is one of France’s most visited destinations and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This tidal island with its impressive 8th-century Mont Saint-Michel Abbey lies 217 km/135 miles (a 2-hour 45-minute drive) southwest of Le Havre cruise port.

Although Mont Saint Michel is located far from the port of Le Havre, there are numerous full-day shore excursions offered by the cruise line/independent tour operators. One day is enough to visit the island and the abbey, walk along its ramparts, enjoy spectacular views of the bay and visit the village. You can read a detailed Mont Saint-Michel review (as I went on a tour from Cherbourg) in my article How to Visit Mont Saint-Michel on a Cruise (from Le Havre and Cherbourg)

5. Honfleur and Deauville

The picturesque Honfleur is a port town located on Normandy’s Côte Fleurie (The Flower Coast), 23 km/14 miles (a 30-minute drive) southeast of Le Havre port. Honfleur is easily accessible via the bridge “Pont de Normandie” and you can go there by taxi, train, bus, or on an organized shore excursion.

Honfleur is best known for its colorful harbour lined with charming cafes, picturesque facades, cobblestone streets packed with eateries and authentic, typically French shops, “chocolateries”, “patisseries”, and so much more… Honfleur is so pretty so make sure you bring a camera to capture the beauty and colors of this wonderful place! Some of the historic landmarks that you can visit in Honfleur are The Church of St. Catherine , the largest wooden church in France, and The Church of Saint Etienne which houses the Maritime Museum.

Honfleur Harbour, Normandy, France

Deauville is another beautiful place you can visit nearby and the majority of the shore excursions to Honfleur also include a visit to Deauville as the distance between the two is only 17 km/10 miles (a 30-minute drive).

Also called “Parisian Riviera”, Deauville is a popular seaside resort and an upscale holiday destination known for its Casino (the grand Casino Barrier de Deauville), prestigious golf courses, horse races and the annual American Film Festival. While there, make sure you explore the town’s chic boutiques, half-timbered buildings and elegant Belle Epoque villas, or head out to Plage de Deauville for a pleasant walk along the beach. If you are visiting Deauville straight from Le Havre cruise port, the distance between the two locations is around 43 km/28 miles (a 50-minute drive) each way.

Rouen is another French jewel, the capital of the Normandy region and one of the most beautiful French cities I’ve ever visited. The city lies approximately 98 km/61 miles (a 1-hour 20-minute drive) east of Le Havre cruise port and cruise lines may offer shore excursions to Rouen (depending on the ship’s time in port).

Rouen played a vital role in the Roman era and Middle Ages and grew into one of the largest and richest cities in Europe in medieval times. Its impressive history is more than 2000 years old and nowadays you can admire the city’s rich heritage on a walking tour around the city.

Rouen’s skyline is dominated by the awe-inspiring 12th-century Gothic Rouen Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen) that inspired the paintings of the Impressionist artist Claude Monet. The cobblestone Old Market Square is where Joan of Arc, a French heroine, was burned at the stake in 1431 during the Hundred Years’ War.

Rouen Cathedral

Nowadays, you can visit the Church of St Joan of Arc which was built on the place where she was burned, or visit the impressive Museum of Joan of Arc (Historial Jeanne d’Arc), located only a 10-minute walk from the square. Other highlights include Le Gros-Horloge , a 14th-century astronomical clock tower and the 14th-century courthouse where Joan of Arc was sentenced to death.

Rouen is cobblestone and medieval, packed with touristy shops, cafes and eateries. It is easily accessible via train from Le Havre, however, it is recommended to book a guided tour to learn about the city’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

The picture-perfect Étretat is the Normandy coast’s seaside resort that owes its popularity to the stunning sceneries and extraordinary landscapes. The resort is located 53 km/33 miles (a 55-minute drive) north of Le Havre cruise port and is famous for its dramatic white chalk cliffs that inspired the works of poets, writers and artists throughout centuries including Monet, Courbet, Leblanc and others.

Étretat has many scenic spots from where you can admire the spectacular rock formations (called “falaises” in French) as well as a pretty town where you browse shops or grab a bite at one of the charming eateries.

Wrapping Up

Normandy is one of the most beautiful French regions and there are so many places to see! If your cruise ship docks in Le Havre, I highly suggest you book one of the shore excursions to Paris, D-Day Beaches, Rouen, Honfleur, or Mont Saint-Michel, regardless of the driving time as these places deserve it!

Along the way, you’ll discover countless architectural gems such as the Town Hall, Saint Roch gardens, Avenue Foch, and Saint Joseph church,. D-Day Landing Beaches Discovery from Le Havre

excursions le havre

  • Explore the pivotal D-Day landing beaches with a journey from Le Havre to iconic WWII sites, including Arromanches-les-Bains and the American Cemetery.
  • Pay your respects at the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, where 9,000 white grave markers poignantly memorialize the sacrifices for freedom.
  • Experience the bravery of the American Rangers at Pointe du Hoc, standing atop the cliffs with a view that stretches over the English Channel.
  • Walk the hallowed shores of Omaha, Juno, and Utah Beaches, delving into the strategic significance and the immense coordination of the D-Day invasion.
  • To enhance your journey, we include a complimentary cold packed lunch including a baguette, water and small dessert.

?

Join us on a remarkable journey through the historical significance of the D-Day as you immerse yourself in the heroic stories, pivotal moments, and iconic landmarks that shaped one of the most monumental events in history.

Your expedition begins in Le Havre, a strategic city and vital logistical hub for the Allied forces that played a crucial role during World War II. From there, you'll set off to the German Cemetery, a poignant site, where each meticulously placed gravestone bears witness to the sacrifices made on both sides of the conflict. This initial stop sets the tone, inviting you to connect with history and grasp the complexities of the past before venturing further into the key events of the D-Day landings at Pointe du Hoc.

Next up is the legendary Pointe du Hoc. Situated on a rugged cliff-top overlooking the English Channel, Pointe du Hoc stands as a testament to the remarkable courage and determination of the American Rangers during the D-Day invasion. It was also home to formidable German artillery positions that threatened the invasion's success. Standing at the dramatic landscape and the sheer cliffs, and imagining the Rangers scaling them amidst a hail of enemy fire, evokes amazement and even a tear or two.

Continue on to Omaha Beach, a sweeping arc of golden sand stretching along Normandy's coast, that evokes profound emotion as the site of one of the most intense battles during the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. Here, American forces faced formidable German defenses, challenging terrains, and fierce resistance, earning the beach its haunting nickname, "Bloody Omaha." Today's serene landscape contrasts sharply with the vivid historical accounts of that fateful day. Visitors are invited to walk along the very shores where thousands of soldiers fought and sacrificed.

In addition to the historical highlights, you will have ample opportunities to indulge in the local culture and cuisine. Take a break for a delicious lunch at Omaha Beach, allowing you to savor the flavors of the region while soaking in the scenic views. Our last stop is the iconic American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer. Stand in awe as you gaze upon row after row of 9,000 meticulously maintained white grave markers. Each one represents a life cut short, a poignant reminder of the profound impact of war and the sacrifices made for freedom. While here, take a moment of reflection at the Memorial Chapel, a solemn tribute to the fallen. Whether you're a history enthusiast or a veteran paying homage, this tour is the perfect choice for an unforgettable experience that combines education, inspiration, and admiration for the resilience of the human spirit.

Please Note: Please indicate any special dietary restrictions (72 hours prior to tour) including a request for the vegetarian option (48 hours prior to tour) in advance so that the proper accommodations can be made. Being punctual is key, especially with large cruise ships and potential delays in disembarkation. We ask that you arrange to meet us as quickly as possible. We will make reasonable efforts to wait for passengers, please understand that we cannot delay indefinitely. If your ship docks late, the new starting time will be within 30 minutes of the new docking time.

Then, you have to know that we’re also cruise passengers at Bee Le Havre Team. We love this way of traveling and discovering the world, and often take part in cruises. As a result, we’re well aware of the constraints that can affect your travels, such as the cancellation of a call. So don’t worry:

– If the call of your cruise ship in Le Havre is ever cancelled, you will of course be automatically refunded in full. There’s no need to contact us – don’t worry, we’re usually the first to know about the cancellation of a stopover.

Further details about our new Free 10am pick-up (at the Cruise Terminal Exit)

Since April 2024, we have been offering a free pickup service at 10am for all cruise passengers (in the large parking lot outside the cruise terminal).

Like all of you, we’re extremely pleased with the success of this new initiative we’ve set up to accompany you during your visit to Le Havre. However, at the same time, we’re also surprised that some people (fortunately a large minority) manage to complain about the minor constraints that a service we offer free of charge to all our cruisers can inevitably have. So here are a few important reminders (purely logical), but always useful to remind everyone:

– Beware of confusion! Please read all the information on your ticket and on our website. Everything is perfectly well explained if you take the time to read our explanatory pages in full. We are really surprised to receive emails from people booking one of our Bee Le Havre Tours and then asking for information about the departure location or wishing to book the pickup. Everything is clearly explained on our website and on your Bee Le Havre Tickets.

– I’d like to remind you once again that there are no Bee Le Havre Tour departures from the Cruise Terminal, as this is forbidden. All our Bee Le Havre Tour departures you book on our website are from our only bus stop in downtown Le Havre: Place Perret. The square is right in the center of Le Havre (between the Volcano and City Hall), and is easy to reach on foot, by taxi or by shuttle from your cruise ship.

– The only departure offered to our customers from the Cruise Terminal is our new free pickup, which departs at 10am. This is not a shuttle. There is no return pickup. It’s a single free pickup at 10 a.m. that allows you to be dropped off free of charge at our Place Perret stop in the morning. This free 10am pickup is automatically set up for each day of cruise call. There are no reservations needed or tickets to buy for this free pickup. Simply present yourself to our team with your Bee Le Havre reservation from one of our Tours (City Tour, Honfleur or Deauville). As you walk out of your cruise terminal, you’ll see one of our Bee Le Havre buses in the distance. You have to exit outside the cruise terminal! Private companies are not allowed inside the cruise terminal parking lot. You’ll only see taxis and cruise ship shuttles if you stay inside the terminal.

– Depending on the number of passengers and the size and number of cruise ships on the day of your visit, there may of course be a long queue in front of our buses when this free pickup leaves at 10 a.m. This is perfectly normal, as everyone is in the same situation as you, Please remain patient and respect the queues and the order of arrival. Don’t worry, whatever happens if you arrive before the free pickup time (before 10 a.m.), you won’t miss the departure of your Bee Le Havre Tour during the day at Place Perret.

– By arriving at our free 10am pickup, you are guaranteed to be met by our drivers for the departure of the Bee Le Havre Tour you have booked at Place Perret, as our teams will have identified you at the pickup check-in.

– However, if you’ve booked the 10:30 a.m. City Tour, for example, and you take a free pickup at 10 a.m. at the cruise terminal, you’ll understand that you won’t arrive at Place Perret among the first of the day. You only arrive at Place Perret around 10:20/10:25 a.m., so if it’s very busy that day, you won’t be able to choose your seat on the 10:30 a.m. City Tour! If you’d like to get to Place Perret first to choose your place on the City Tour, don’t take our free pickup but make your own way to Place Perret, arriving at least 30 minutes before the start of your City Tour.

– The aim of our free 10am pickup is not to get you to Place Perret as early as possible. The aim of our free 10am pickup we offer to all our customers is to guarantee that you will be taken to Place Perret without having to worry about organizing your own itinerary or having to pay any additional costs (shuttle, taxi, etc.).

– For further details on our free 10am pickup, please click here.

Thank you for your confidence, and enjoy your day with us!

What about refunds in case of cancellation?

Our refund policy Bee Le Havre is very simple: To cancel your reservation, you just have to send us your request by mail before your day of visit, you will be automatically refunded entirely on your bank card (without any justification to provide us).

But please, Important to read this advice: We would like to remind you that it is very important to use common sense when booking your tickets in advance on our website. For several years now, we have unfortunately been confronted with shameless people who hastily book their tickets in advance, only to ask us a few days later to cancel their booking, and then to make a new one online a few days later.. Please note that, although we pride ourselves on our commitment to you to always refund 100% of the amount paid, the banks charge us a substantial fee for each cancellation.

Therefore, if you value our service and would like us to continue to offer you benefits of this kind, please do not book in advance if you are unsure whether you will be able to visit us. In that case, please wait and buy your tickets on the day of your visit, when you’ll be at our Place Perret bus stop or in our Souvenir Shop. Of course, you run the risk of running out of tickets on the day of your visit, but it’s better than wasting all those bank charges.

We thank you in advance for your understanding and look forward to welcoming you soon in our BeeBus.
