If weekend getaways are your favorite way to explore new towns, then add Goldsboro to your list. As the home of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, the town already receives many national and international visitors. 

Offering Southern Charm in a cool downtown setting, Goldsboro has undergone changes that continue to this day. Looking for a downtown area that is easily walkable? Goldsboro has that in spades. With a slogan like “be more, do more, Seymour,” and billboards touting “We heart jet noise!” the town has embraced its Air Force history and roots. The addition of local breweries will make Goldsboro a destination onto its own.

#1 Relax in the Outdoors at Cliffs of the Neuse

Didn’t expect to find a hip hop locale in downtown Goldsboro? Neither did I, but there it is! Grab a light meal, like a soup and salad (though the buffalo cauliflower bites were so tasty!) and the hot dogs are a hit. But they’re best known for their ice cream. Did you know that they also serve a ginger shot? What’s that? A liquid made out of ginger root supposed to help boost your immune system and who couldn’t use a little help during flu season? And of course, the music will make you want to stay here as long as possible!

#4 Admire Goldsboro Sculptures

Goldsboro’s art collection keeps growing. Rotated annually, the city rents out the art pieces dotting Center Street. Swapped in early October, you’ll currently find a variety of pieces selected by a cross-section of local citizens.

#5 Taste Some Delicious Down East Barbecue

North Carolina’s barbecue comes with its own regional twists, but Goldsboro offers some of the best variety.

Adam’s Roadside Bar-B-Que

NC eastern barbecue meets Texas barbecue at Adam’s Roadside Barbecue. Fans of brisket will find their sweet spot satisfied at Adam’s BBQ – visible to drivers arriving from the west on US-70 or their downtown location. Over the last 10 years, Adam’s has honed their barbecuing to sweet perfection. But don’t miss out on their mac ‘n cheese! Given the variety, freshness, and quality of the food, it is easy to see why Adam’s is such a popular catering choice.

McCall’s Bar-B-Que and Seafood

139 Millers Chapel Road, Goldsboro – Website

Serving meals since 1989, McCall’s is a staple in the Goldsboro community. While you can order individual plates of food, McCall’s is best known for its all-you-can-eat buffet. Help yourself to the best seafood, fried chicken, and pork. Plus unlimited sides! But get here early if you don’t want to miss out on the banana pudding. If you’ve got a big group to feed, McCall’s will happily put together meals to take with you.

Grady’s Barbeque (pronounced “Gra-dees”)

3096 Arrington Bridge Road, Dudley – Website

Technically, this is just outside of Goldsboro, but it couldn’t have been left off the list (plus it isn’t too far from Heritage Farms General Store, see #12 below). It’s only open Wednesday through Friday from 10 am to 3 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm. But get here early, especially on the weekends, because when they sell out, they’re done for the day!

#6 Visit Locally Owned Shops in Downtown Goldsboro

From cute women’s clothing boutiques such as Mimi’s Boutique and Fine Gifts, Cosa Bella Boutique, downtown Goldsboro has a little bit of everything. Or grab some home decor from my favorite store on the street — Carolina Pine Country Store. 

#7 Tour Seymour Johnson Air Force Base

Whether you or a loved one served aboard Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, experience a public monthly tour. Visitors must register in advance through the Visit Goldsboro office. As the parent of an Airman, it was helpful to go on the tour to understand a little bit more about what life must be like for my son even though he is not stationed at this base. Here is an idea of what to expect during your tour.

#8 Check Out The Murals

Painted by local artists, the murals offer a glimpse into the spirit of Goldsboro. From flags with airplanes to murals celebrating musical heritage and farming tradition, you’ll find it all on Goldsboro’s downtown walls. #9 Sip Some Beers (or Wine!)

With more breweries expecting to open in the near future, Goldsboro will become a beer destination within North Carolina. Here are some spots to consider:

Brew Works is expanding to being its own micro craft brewery in 2020, transforming an old gas station into housing a taproom, outdoor beer garden, and a place for live bands to perform. Their current taproom will continue as a bottle shop. With various events and a large game room, this place is a fun place to hang out with a group of friends.

This Goldsboro bottle shop and bar offer a varied selection of beers and wines. If none of the eight taps appeal to you, staff can quickly chill a can of your favorite brew. Check out their calendar of events on their website for a fun time.

R&R Brewing

Embracing the whole pickle theme, R&R serves its beer in pickle jars and even pays homage with their Pickletown Lager (pickle optional). R&R encourages you to enjoy life by enjoying time with your friends over a well-crafted beer. They have really thought about their decor and branding — the tables and seats have been put together by the local high school shop students. Their Farmer’s Hours Saison was one of the best I’ve ever tried.

#10 Visit The Mount Olive Pickle Company

Any fans of pickles out there? Open since 1926, Mt. Olive has been a staple business in the community. Serving as a leader in the pickle industry – Mount Olive was the first to offer no sugar added pickles to its line and single-serve packaging. Their dill-lightful gift shop offers pickle-themed souvenirs for your dill-loving family and friends.

True fans will want to visit during the NC Pickle Fes t – usually held in April.

#11 Explore With a Specially Designed Tour

Visit Goldsboro loves an opportunity to show off their town, so what better way to do that than with a tour led by their experts ? From seasonal tours (like ghost tours in October), monthly Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Tours (offered on the last Thursday of every month), Brews and ‘Cues Tour and BBQ Trail Tasting Tour, there is something for everyone. #12 Shop For Local Products at Heritage Farms General Store

Quality products celebrating the best the area has to offer – that is what Heritage Farms General Store offers its visitors. With a wide variety of Cheshire Pork products on hand and other local assorted food and North Carolina products that celebrate a by-gone era, this general store allows visitors to bring nostalgia home with them. The best part, the ice cream shop in the back of the store makes some of the best milkshakes in the county.

They say the smallest details are often the most important – upon checking in you’ll be offered a small heated towel with a fresh scent to reinvigorate yourself. 

Located just an hour and a half from Durham , Goldsboro makes for a convenient and excellent weekend getaway destination, and convenient addition to any trip to nearby Kinston .

Visit Seymour Johnson Air Force Base!

What a beautiful town! I used to live in Columbia, SC and loved spending weekends in Charlotte but this likes like an equally fun alternative! There are so many mouth-watering eateries that I would have a hard time choosing which ones to try in just two days. Also, I’m loving the town slogan!

Oh my! I’m a huge fan of pickles and would LOVE to visit the Mt. Olive Pickle Company. I am also curious to try those Korean Kimchi Burgers and fries. I love kimchi so much that I occasionally make it myself. I’m still confused however why it’s sushi and burgers as sushi is Japanese and not Korean. Do they also service sushi?

They do serve sushi as well as burgers. The food is Asian inspired with both a Japanese and Korean influence. It’s certainly unique.

We’ve never heard of Goldboro. But then again, it’s a bit far for us to spend a weekend there since we live in Europe. Haha.. But the fact that there are so many things to do makes us consider to stop there when we make another US road trip. Let’s hope that the Ice Storm will still exist until then, because we’d love to taste that ginger shot (we love ginger drinks!) and some ice cream!

It’s an unexpected treasure in Goldsboro!

Exploring new towns is so much fun. Goldsboro sounds like a lovely place to spend a weekend. My husband would definitely enjoy the breweries and the Airforce Base. But I would love the little coffee shops and seeing some of the local artwork. Will keep this in mind when I go to North Carolina.

It’s a cute little town.

I’ve never heard of Goldsboro but looks like a lovely place to explore for a day or two. I’d head straight to the breweries and the Olive Pickle Company.

How To Spend A Perfect Weekend In Beautiful Goldsboro, North Carolina

The town of Goldsboro , in Wayne County, is located in eastern North Carolina approximately 55 miles east of Raleigh. The nearest airport is Raleigh-Durham International Airport. For years, my husband and I passed through or around Goldsboro on our way elsewhere. We realize now this was a mistake. Goldsboro and its surrounding area are blessed with a rich military, agricultural, and culinary history. Wayne County is well-represented by its impressive array of activities and experiences just waiting to be discovered.

Note: Our stay in Wayne County was generously hosted by Visit Goldsboro . All opinions are entirely my own.

Things To Do In Goldsboro

Whether you’re a family, couple, or solo traveler, you’ll find activities to suit your interests and fitness level. Here’s a small sample of what Goldsboro and Wayne County have to offer.

1. Get In Touch With Nature

Cliffs of the Neuse State Park lies 14 miles southeast of Goldsboro. Here, birdsong and other calming sounds, the earthy scents of woodlands, and a feeling of well-being envelop you like a sensory hug from Mother Nature. The 750-acre park features hiking trails, picnic area, tent and RV camping, swimming, fishing, and canoeing. A 90-foot-high sand cliff offers photographers a stunning view of the southern bank of the Neuse River below.

Pro Tip: The park’s trails are not wheelchair accessible.

2. Stroll Goldsboro’s Award-Winning Historic Downtown Area

Downtown Goldsboro’s wide brick-paved streets are alive with positive energy. The Paramount Theater, built in 1882 and renovated in 2008, is the city’s headquarters for the performing arts. Goldsboro’s former city hall makes a fine photo op. These and other preserved buildings represent the city’s commitment to honor its proud past.

The Arts Council of Wayne County houses rotating art exhibits, art classes, and artist’s studios. Charming boutiques, restaurants, and antique shops beckon you. Center Street, where a railroad track once ran down the middle, now sports a broad median where locals and visitors can stroll, contemplate original sculptures, and take advantage of seating areas.

3. Visit The Mt. Olive Pickle Company Gift Shop

Mount Olive, a 20-minute drive from Goldsboro, is the birthplace and home of Mt. Olive Pickle Company . From its humble beginnings, the company has grown into the producer of the top-selling pickles, relishes, and peppers in the USA. The production area is off-limits to the public, but you can learn about how Mt. Olive pickles are produced via an entertaining YouTube video. You should definitely visit the gift shop, which alone is worth the drive.

Pro Tip: While in Mount Olive, explore the historic district via the Steele Memorial Historical Downtown Walk, a self-guided walking tour courtesy of the Wayne County North Carolina Public Library .

4. Tour Seymour Johnson Air Force Base (SJAFB)

An integral part of the history and life of Wayne County and the city of Goldsboro, SJAFB offers free tours on the 4th Thursday of every month. Tours are by reservation only. For more information, call (919) 734-7922.

5. Get Down On The Farm With Agritourism

Agriculture is a major part of Wayne County’s economy and culture. You’ll find area farms eager to open their gates to welcome visitors and give them a true homegrown experience.

Odom Farming Company welcomes individuals, families, and groups with the goal of introducing visitors to the fun of spending time on a farm. Strawberry picking in spring, fields of wildflowers to wander in summer, and fall frolics from September to November are some of the farm’s seasonal activities. Resident donkeys, goats, a cow, hayrides, a corn maze, and a playground are only a few of the features available for all to enjoy. 

Morganically Grown is the brainchild of Morgan Dennis. Her specialty is propagating houseplants, tropical plants, and cactuses. You can visit her greenhouse by appointment, catch her at one of the local farmers markets, or order plants online.

Holly Grove Farms, Inc . is a 65-acre farm specializing in raising and milking goats to produce all-natural farmstead cheeses. Tours are available by appointment. The on-site gift shop is open every Saturday. There you can sample plain and flavored goat cheese before you buy.

Pro Tip: If you visit in the early spring, you can coo over the adorable newborn baby goats.

6. Delve Into Area History At The Wayne County Museum

A visit to the Wayne County Museum Is a fascinating journey into the past. Two levels of exhibits bring to life the centuries from the American Revolution to the present. The story of Wayne County unfolds through rotating exhibits, a permanent American Civil War exhibit, a Wall of Fame honoring men and women whose contributions are intricately woven into the county’s history, and more. 

7. Indulge In A Touch Of Class At Tobacco and Hops

The oldest tobacconist in Wayne County, Tobacco & Hops offers patrons a wide selection of premier cigars in a comfortable, unpretentious atmosphere. The spacious humidor is impressive, and the friendly staff know their cigars.

With a quality cigar, a quality beer is in order. Tobacco & Hops carries a variety of craft beers produced in North Carolina, as well as an assortment of international beers.

Pro Tip: This slice of cigar lover’s heaven isn’t exclusively for men. In fact, at least half of Tobacco & Hops’ customers are women.

Restaurants In Goldsboro

For a town of fewer than 40,000, Goldsboro restaurants feed locals and visitors alike with an eclectic array of food. Barbecue is king, and this town has some of the best in the state. Once you’ve had your fill of smoked hog and savory sauce, switch gears and try some of Goldsboro’s other tempting edible and potable options.

Wilber’s BBQ

This legendary Goldsboro favorite reopened under new ownership after being closed for over a year. The new owners kept the original recipes, knotty pine paneling, and red and white checkered tablecloths. Their pork barbecue and barbecued chicken are smokey and rich in flavor. The list of sides seems to go on forever, and they’re all excellent. Try the hush puppies dipped in chicken gravy, the slaw, and the fried okra for starters. They also produce excellent banana pudding.

Adams Roadside Bar-B-Q and Adams Downtown Bar-B-Q

Scott Adams and his family own two separate eateries: Adams Roadside Bar-B-Q and Adams Downtown Bar-B-Q. What they have in common is Scott’s talent for creating new and tasty takes on traditional favorites. Try the eastern-style pit barbecue, Texas beef brisket, or Memphis-style baby back ribs. Good little trucks stop, only down side its that you have to buy at least 50 gallons of disel in order to park your truck for the night if not you might get towed, and that they are remodeling their restaurant, so only microwaveable food sold for the moment

I always enjoy the travel centers. Better food, still a good gas price. Best of everything for a stop while traveling. In comparison to the food stops in Germany, American travel food is horrible, but my comparison is against American pit stops.

Truck stop in Kenly. It is like a mall inside with a food court at one end. 5-6 different food type choices. And tables & chairs we can sit in. Plus clean bathrooms and mini shops in there.
