Do You Know Disney’s Old Town Celebration, Florida?

c0aa5a3c a8cb 4deb 912a 8498d873006f

Celebration, Florida is a community once owned by The Walt Disney Company, however is now part of Kissimmee and Osceola County.

In the early 1990’s Disney founded The Celebration Company , that with the help of a specialized group of city and social planners and architects conceived five principals that would guide every aspect of the community known as the “celebration cornerstones”:

  • Sense of community
  • Focus on technology
  • Sense of place
  • Focus on education
  • Focus on health

Do You Know Disney's Old Town Celebration, Florida? 1

Celebration was supposed to be an experiment in community planning called “new urbanism” and was once referred as “Disney’s Town of Celebration,” a place to live and work.

Back in 1995, the demand to live there was so high that Disney had to hold a lottery to decide which families would be the first ones to build their homes there. The first family move to Celebration on June 18, 1996.

When you visit Celebration you will notice that it looks very familiar, in a way that you will feel like you are back on Main Street U.S.A. There’s a reason for that though, this town was designed by Disney Imagineers so the Disney touches are there.

One example are the telephone poles, if you pay attention you’ll see that they are Mickey shaped! Cool right?

Celebration is also home of the headquarters for Disney Cruise Line and other Disney divisions.

So if you want to take a day off from the parks, you should definitely visit Celebration, Florida and relax shopping, eating or just walking around the beautiful town.

Disney Cruise Line is a cruise line operation owned by The Walt Disney Company and headquartered in Celebration , Florida . The business is run by President Thomas Mazloum, as part of the Disney Experiences division.

The Disney Cruise Line currently operates five cruise ships, the Disney Magic , the Disney Wonder , the Disney Dream , the Disney Fantasy , and the Disney Wish , along with Castaway Cay , the Walt Disney Company's private island in the Bahamas designed as an exclusive port of call for Disney's ships. A second private island, Lighthouse Point , will also serve as an exclusive port of call for Disney's ships. At D23 2024, it was announced that 4 more new ships will be added to the fleet which will add up to a total of 13 by 2031.

History [ ]

The Disney Magic began operation July 30 , 1998 . The Disney Wonder began operation August 15 , 1999 . The Disney Dream began operation January 26 , 2011 , and its most recent ship, the Disney Fantasy , was launched on March 31 , 2012 . The ships each contain 875 staterooms [1] and are almost identical in their design, with a few variations in restaurants and entertainment venues. Both contain areas designed exclusively for various age groups, including toddlers, young children, teens, and adults.

They are the first in the industry to be designed and built from the keel up as family cruise liners, with the goal of accommodating parents and children. Unlike most ships of their type, they do not include casinos, to maintain a family-friendly atmosphere. In October 2006 , additional family amenities were added to the Disney Wonder including features specifically geared toward toddlers, making the ship even more suitable for families with younger children.

Disney Cruise Line was created in 1995 when the company commissioned its two ships at Fincantieri in Italy, ending an arrangement with Premier Cruises for the maritime segment of its vacation packages.

BREAKING NEWS

CONE, MODELS, SATELLITE: Tropical Storm Helene forms, projected to become major hurricane on path toward Florida

36 warnings, 74 watches and 5 advisories in effect for 10 regions in the area, what is celebration: the history of a community developed by disney, not a town, not a city: celebration is a community founded in 1996.

Ken Pilcher , Producer

Celebration, Florida is an experiment in community planning called “New Urbanism.” It was often called “Disney’s Town of Celebration” in its early days but it’s not actually a town and it’s no longer owned by the Walt Disney Company.

The census-designated place of Celebration in Osceola County backs up to the Walt Disney World Resort situated to the north of the community.

Recommended Videos

Despite some similarities with Walt Disney’s vision of a Utopian city he called E.P.C.O.T., Celebration was dreamed up as Walt Disney World, Walt Disney Imagineering and The Disney Development Company took a good look at the roughly 27,000 acres in Osceola and Orange counties Walt and his team secretly purchased in the late 1960s.

By the late ’80s and into the ’90s, Walt Disney World was undergoing a building boom that included the addition of numerous resort hotels, the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park, a nightclub district known as Pleasure Island, the Typhoon Lagoon water park and the Disney Vacation Club time-share resort business.

In developing a master plan to manage growth, executives decided the land, largely East of I-4, was not part of the resort’s growth strategy.

The roughly 4,900 acres Celebration sits on was part of Walt Disney World and controlled by Disney’s governmental arm, The Reedy Creek Improvement District until development started. It was de-annexed from Reedy Creek so as not to dilute Disney’s control of the governmental entity, but two Reedy Creek utilities provided power and telecommunications to the “town.” In keeping with Walt Disney World as a whole, about half of the land is permanent nature conservation land.

Disney announced plans for Celebration to the public in 1991 and broke ground “founding” the town in 1994, but the architectural competition for ideas and master-planning happened in 1987. At the time, Disney CEO Michael Eisner was championing the use of high-profile “celebrity” architects across the company, reasoning that it cost roughly the same to build something memorable and creative as something bland. One of those architects, Robert A.M. Stern, developed Celebration’s master plan along with Cooper, Robertson & Partners.

Stern’s firm also developed one of the area’s crucial amenities, Celebration Health, which was part of a then-new trend toward whole-health care with a more spa-like feel. Florida Hospital --now AdventHealth-- developed, runs and has since expanded the hospital.

The community plans also promised an experimental school and state of the art infrastructure linking all homes and businesses digitally.

Crucial to Celebration was the development of “pattern books” that ensure no matter who ultimately built the homes, the community would all be unified in design favoring a “small town” feel with porches in the front and parking in the back. That uniformity also led to numerous criticisms comparing it to the too-good-to-be-true town from the movies “The Stepford Wives” and “The Truman Show.”

The idea caught on with the public enough that Disney actually held a lottery in November of 1995 to decide which families would be the first to buy plots of land and contract to build the first homes. A small preview center showed what they would look like.

According to the Celebration Foundation’s website, the first family moved in to the first village on June 18, 1996. November 12, 1996 is Celebration’s “Founders Day” -- marking the completion of the downtown, which was designed by numerous celebrity architects. Disney sold the downtown to private investors in January 2004.

Celebration was meant to be a place to live and work. An office complex facing U.S. 192, Celebration Place, was announced and built early in the process. Several Disney divisions occupy much of that office space, including the headquarters for Disney Cruise Line.

According to U.S. Census data, roughly 8,540 residents called Celebration home in 2017, with a median income of $83,228 and a median property value of $401,600.

Celebration is considered a relatively low-crime area, with its first murder occurring in 2010. There have been several high-profile lawsuits over the years, largely over building practices used in the homes and management of condos and rental properties.

There are roughly 4,300 homes and condos, six houses of worship, two public grade schools, a Montessori Academy, a branch of Stetson University, a public library, along with shops, hotels and businesses, all linked by more than 40 public parks and miles of walking trails and boardwalks.

Celebration Key to Focus on Inclusive Experiences

  • September 24, 2024

Celebration Key

Most of the experiences on Carnival Cruise Line’s new Celebration Key will come at no extra cost, said the company’s Chief Marketing Officer Amy Martin Ziegenfuss.

“We want to make sure that you can get off the ship and have an amazing day not expending anything extra,” she said during a travel advisor event held in Chicago earlier this month.

The new private destination in Grand Bahama will offer guests inclusive food for lunch, she said, noting that passengers will also be able to spend the day at Starfish and Calypso Lagoon without expending any extra.

“Obviously, if you want a cabana, that’s an opportunity, and you can pay some money for it,” Ziegenfuss continued, adding that loungers and shades will be available for free in both areas.

Celebration Key will offer a selection of cabanas, she explained, ranging from sunbeds to beachside villas and floating aquabanas.

“We also have some super villas and super cabanas that can hold eight to ten people and also come with some food and beverage,” she added.

Carnival is also offering an all-inclusive experience at the Pearl Cove Beach Club, an adults-only area within the new destination .

According to the company’s website, the private area will only be accessible for 18+ booked guests with wristbands.

A day pass for the space costs $179.99 per person and allows guests to take advantage of an array of amenities, including a full-service restaurant, an infinity pool, an exclusive beachfront and premium loungers.

The price also includes all-inclusive service with rum punch, draft domestic beer, house red and white wine, all well drinks, frozen strawberry daiquiris, and piña coladas, in addition to a premium lunch.

Set to open in July 2025, Celebration Key will be located near Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. Sailing from ten different homeports, 18 ships are set to make 500 calls at the new destination in its first year of operations .

A New Wish Comes True for Cruisers

  • By FTL Staff

Disney Wish at port

The Disney Wish , the fifth ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, has been officially christened during an unforgettable celebration filled with special guests and characters from Disney, Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar stories.

The Disney Wish sails its maiden voyage on July 14, followed by three- and four-night cruises to Nassau, Bahamas, and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, from Port Canaveral, Florida.

Disney Cruise Line honored Make-A-Wish children past, present and future in the prestigious role of godchildren for the Disney Wish, redefining the longstanding maritime tradition of appointing a ship “godmother.”

Tony Award-winning entertainer Anika Noni Rose, known for voicing Tiana in “The Princess and the Frog,” performed the ballad “Wishes,” evoking the spirit of optimism and wonder woven into the fabric of Disney’s enchanting new cruise ship.

The event culminated with the ceremonial breaking of a champagne bottle like only Disney can do, with a dash of pixie dust and a symphony of pyrotechnics, special effects, music and fanfare.

“The Disney Wish embodies the incredible magic that only Disney can deliver,” said Bob Chapek, chief executive officer, The Walt Disney Company. “It celebrates nearly 100 years of Disney storytelling excellence, bringing fantastic worlds and beloved characters to life like never before through innovative technology and new approaches. Every element of the Disney Wish reflects our relentless focus on our guests, and everything they love about Disney.”

The newest Disney Cruise Line ship is infused with more storytelling than ever before and filled with one-of-a-kind entertainment and innovative “firsts” from bow to stern.

These include the first Disney attraction at sea, family dining adventures themed to “Frozen” and Marvel, an immersive tour of the Star Wars galaxy, interactive virtual quests that unlock hidden magic around every corner, original Broadway-style stage productions, signature fireworks at sea, imaginative clubs for kids of all ages, and an expanded collection of experiences exclusively for adults.

“We’re constantly innovating and creating big, bold experiences for our guests that connect them to our stories in amazing new ways,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. “With the Disney Wish, we’re pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with awesome new entertainment and experiences and combining them with Disney Cruise Line fan-favorite offerings. This new ship is one more symbol of our incredibly bright future, and just the beginning of where we can go.”

PORT CANAVERAL, Florida (WPVI) -- The Disney Wish, the fifth ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, was christened Wednesday during a magical celebration in Port Canaveral, Florida.

Disney Cruise Line honored Make-A-Wish children past, present and future in the prestigious role of godchildren for the Disney Wish, redefining the longstanding maritime tradition of appointing a ship "godmother."

Colby, 10; Megan, 16; and Jenna, 13 were Wednesday's ambassadors.

The christening also featured Tony Award-winning entertainer Anika Noni Rose, the Disney Legend known for voicing Tiana in "The Princess and the Frog," who performed the ballad "Wishes."

And the fun culminated with a ceremonial breaking of a champagne bottle.

The ship also features Disney's first-ever attraction at sea -- the AquaMouse. This is a water adventure where guests can ride a waterslide that is 760 feet and it goes all around the ship.

Disney CEO Bob Chapek says nearly a century of Disney magic is reflected around the vessel.

"The Disney Wish embodies the incredible magic that only Disney can deliver," said Chapek. "It celebrates nearly 100 years of Disney storytelling excellence, bringing fantastic worlds and beloved characters to life like never before through innovative technology and new approaches."

The Disney Wish will set sail on July 14.

‘An Encanto Celebration’ Debuts to the Delight of Guests Onboard the Disney Magic

Today, ‘An Encanto Celebration’ debuted onboard the Disney Magic to the delight of guests who packed in the D-Lounge for the 2PM event leaving standing room only for late arrivals.

“An Encanto Celebration”

When Disney Cruise Line revealed the new experience last Friday, they described it as follows:

Guests can join the fantastical family Madrigal during an all-new immersive experience, “An Encanto Celebration,” designed to engage families through music, crafts and storytelling. The interactive experience gives guests an opportunity to meet and take photos with Mirabel and the family member we don’t talk about, Bruno, during their Disney Cruise Line debut. Families can also join a spirited sing-along of beloved “Encanto” songs and create butterfly and flower crafts inspired by the film. During the show, guests can experience a true taste of South America thanks to a selection of local Colombian beers, cocktails and sodas along with film-inspired mocktails.

Magic Encanto Celebration D Lounge

A selection of drinks were available from the bar in D-Lounge including a mocktail named the Coco-Lima.

The special cocktail was unnamed, but listed as “Cocktail 3” on the recipe printout.

The event started with some questions about Encanto led by members of the entertainment team. Approximately 10 kids who answered questions correctly were invited up on stage.

The experience continued with the singing of the Encanto theme using maracas. The lyrics were displayed on the screens around D-Lounge to aid in guest participation.

The celebration included two crafts with supplies available for making flowers and a butterfly.

The entertainment cast members, Ricardo and Lily, held another round of questions with more kids invited up on stage before launching to another song from the film, Su rface Pressure .

The event concluded with a Mirabel and Bruno meet and greet allowing guests to take photos.

The “Celebration at Sea” In-Room Package on the Disney Wish Makes For a Fun Surprise (Photos, Video)

Hi everyone!

We sailed on the Disney Wish for my birthday in late August, and our sponsor travel agency MEI-Travel & Mouse Fan Travel surprised me with the Celebration at Sea package that is an in-room gift only available on the Disney Wish. I planned to write this article earlier, but the package wasn’t showing as available online. But now, there are several Disney Wish exclusive packages displayed on the Disney Cruise Line website. The Celebration at Sea package currently costs $95.00. Here is a look at what is included!

From Disney: Get the party started with a spectacular celebration aboard the new Disney Wish! Whether your special someone is turning one or 100, this festive package transforms your stateroom with birthday-themed décor featuring Captain Minnie, Captain Mickey and friends. Decorations include one “Happy Birthday” dry-erase door magnet; one oversized towel; 2 pillowcases; one “Celebrate” ceiling banner; one “Happy Birthday” ceiling banner and a playful Pluto scarf for your guest of honor to wear.

Here is our video and then photos.

I was really surprised when we opened the door. The Celebration at Sea package has a lot of elements to it – the pillowcases, towel, room decor, Pluto scarf (though it looks more like a bed runner). And I love that the items are Disney Wish specific.

Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy and Pluto are on the towel. The towel says “Celebrate Today”.

Captains Mickey and Minnie are on the pillowcases, with “It’s My Day” written on them.

“Celebrate” hangs from the ceiling.

Disney Wish magnets held the decor up.

This is the first time I’ve had a door magnet in almost 10 cruises. It was a fun addition to the door!

There is also a banner that says “Happy Birthday” with Goofy and Donald.

This was a really great surprise. Thank you to our sponsor MEI-Travel and Mouse Fan Travel . We do recommend the agency for booking the Disney Cruise Line (or any cruise or Disney destination).

The Celebration at Sea package is not only a lovely onboard surprise, but it allows the recipient to enjoy a set of festive souvenirs long after the cruise is over. And maybe it won’t be a surprise, perhaps you just want to buy it for yourself. There are also other gifts and packages that can be purchased as part of Disney Cruise Line onboard gifts .

We briefly took the decorations down for photos and video of the room. Here is a look at our video of  stateroom 6614!
