The Story behind Outback Opal Tours

Who are the people behind your business, tell us something quirky or memorable about you, your customers or your business.

5-star Outback Opal Experience (TA review July 2023 Jennifer G.) We went with Outback Opal Tours on their Full Day Tour and had a great day with tour guide Nat. Pick up and delivered back to our accommodation was on time. We were told local history and stories of the outback way of life on tour, which helped us understand what a hard life these Opal miners endure out there on the fields. All the people from this company were very informative and friendly. We went fossicking for opals and although we only found potch it was a great hands-on experience. A must-do tour when in Lightning Ridge!!!

Dawn at Lightening Ridge

Lightning Ridge Opal Mine Town

By Marco Stojanovik

Lightning Ridge town, located in the Walgett Shire of New South Wales 768km from Sydney, is famous around the world for its elusive gem quality black opals. Unlike ordinary opals the black opal has carbon and iron oxide trace elements in it producing a very dark stone which has hints of blue, green and red. Due to their scarcity they’re highly valued. Today, the only town in the world to produce the elusive black opal, Lightning Ridge (and Coober pedy) is synonymous with opalmining in Australia. While having a population of only 3,000, it attracts over 80,000 visitors each year to experience the fascinating town and even try their luck as an opal miner in the underground mines searching for these shimmering gemstones.

Odyssey Traveller conducts a guided tour of Lightning Ridge as part of our 14 day guided tour of Outback Queensland . Beginning and ending in Dubbo, we head north to south into Queensland and back discovering the big skies, stunning landscapes of the great artesian basin, and fascinating history of the outback communities of Western Queensland . During our full day tour at Lightning Ridge, we visit on a private guided tour ,an opal mine, explore the opal community in the main town, and relax in the hot water Artesian bore baths before retiring to our accommodation. This article explores the Lightning ridge area of outback NSW and the town ‘s opal mining history to assist your visit before we continue onto Walgett and Dubbo.

History of Mining in Lightning Ridge

The traditional owners of the land around Lightning Ridge are the Yuwaalaraay people . Although they did not mine the opals, they knew about them from Dreamtime stories, according to which a huge wheel of fire fell to earth and sprayed the countryside with brilliant coloured stones.

By the mid 1800s British colonialists had settled in the area, originally using the land for pastoral activities. It was soon after that Lightning Ridge got its name following the deaths of a shepherd, his dog and 600 sheep after being struck by lightning while sheltering in a low ridge in the area.

Black Opal was first discovered in the area in the 1870s but the finds were indiscriminate and the district was not recognised as an important opal field. As such, it wasn’t until 1901 that Jack Murray, a boundary rider, became the first registered miner at Lightning Ridge.

day tours lightning ridge

A year later as word began to spread of the new form of Opal, early pioneer Charlie Nettleton walked 700km to the Ridgeto see it firsthand. Lightning Ridge‘s future would not have been the same without him. An opal miner from White Cliffs, he saw the potential in the unusual black body tones of the nuggets of opal.

He began seriously prospecting on a hill, later known as Nettleton’s Hill, on Angledool Station, which was later to become the site of Lightning Ridge. In this underground mine in 1903 he discovered a large parcel of quality opals and along with Murray set off to walk the 700km back to White cliffs in Outback NSW to develop a market.

The parcel of shimmering gemstones was sold for $30 to Ted Murphy, who delighted with the beauty of opal promised a supplement to follow, later becoming the first resident opal buyer in Lightning Ridge. With news of the successful sale, many of Nettleton’s mates followed him back to the Ridge chasing their own fortunes. Nettleton has since been attributed with being a major factor in developing the underground mines and the industry. Nettleton is commemorated with a life-sized bronze statue in the town, the “Spirit of Lightning Ridge“.

Development of the Town

Throughout the 20 th century Lightning Ridge town became increasingly popular attracting thousands of people from Sydney and beyond to its underground mines in search of the precious opal, in turn developing a rich character that it maintains today. From the beginning the community was multicultural as the lure of opal brought miners from around the world hoping to strike it rich.

The first school, called ‘Opale School’, was opened in 1907, the Imperial Hotel in 1909, and the first shop soon after. By 1914, the State Government consolidated the settlements into Lightning Ridge and established a new post office, a school, and the bush nurse.

day tours lightning ridge

Opal mining remains popular today with the town‘s population of 1200 supplemented with over 80,000 visitors per year many of whom are on Lightning ridge tours. Visitors come either to fossick for fun, find their fortune, experience the gritty lifestyle within an outback NSW mining town, or to relax in the artesian baths walk the town and visit the local art gallery. Lightning ridge offers arange of outback opal tours to the opal field including a black opal tour and car door tour, where visitors take a self guided tour seeking out a car door to follow the tour path. Though on a Odyssey tour we engage a local tour guide to provide a tour of the town and a guided underground tour.

The Australian Opal Centre Museum

The Australian Opal Centre , designed by Glenn Murcutt and Wendy Lewin, is currently under construction at Lightning Ridge. The $34 million museum will preserve, display and research the greatest ever public collection of Australian opal, opalised fossils and the colourful history and heritage of the Australian opal fields. A magnificent collection of precious opal, cultural artefacts, artworks, photographs, archival and research material is currently being built.

Located on a 3.1-hectare site adjacent to the disused Three Mile open cut opal mine, the building will be two-storeys, 100 metres long, and 30 metres wide at ground level, and include subterranean spaces that will take visitors deep into the opal field. It will be sustainable and self-sufficient by generating its own power from solar panels and collecting its own water from the roof.

Spaces will be included for permanent and temporary exhibitions, curatorial facilities, education and learning facilities, a library, workshops for opal cutting demonstration, carving and jewellery making, research laboratories and theatre spaces for events and conferences.

13 Unbelievable Things To Do In Lightning Ridge NSW

Looking for things to do in Lightning Ridge in NSW? As one of Australia’s quirkiest towns, as well as being home to the world’s largest collection of black opals, there is so much going on here if you’re looking for different places to holiday in NSW.

Our new writer, Liz Saunders from North Queensland is currently living in Sydney and loves exploring places around NSW. She has been visiting Lightning Ridge for the last five years and is sharing her guide to visiting this gem of a place. You can follow her on Instagram at @wanderlust_liz_ .

Let’s get into it and hear about the amazing things to do in Lightning Ridge in NSW!

Table of Contents

How To Get To Lightning Ridge

lightning-ridge-map

Lightning Ridge isn’t the easiest place to get to, which is why it makes it so special. With a long drive ahead, there are some fantastic places to stop off on the way there. There are a few ways to get to Lightning Ridge, but you best not be in a hurry. The journey itself is half the fun!

Driving To Lightning Ridge

If coming from Queensland, it’s a 7h30m drive from the border, passing the iconic Hebel Hotel. You’d be mad if you didn’t stop in for a cold drink and look around.

If you’re coming from Sydney, it takes over 8hrs to drive there, but you can choose your own adventure. Doing the trip in one day means driving in the dark with wildlife on the road, which isn’t recommended. There is a lot of wildlife, please drive at a responsible speed and keep your eyes on the road.

Logan-Wines-things-to-do-in-mudgee

It is best to take your time and break up the trip over 2 days (or more!). You can either head up Tamworth way and include Moree as a side trip. Or drive 3 hours to the famous wine region of Mudgee. There are loads of things to do in Mudgee which is easily worth a day or two stop over.

warrumbungles-hikes

Coonabarabran is also a great option as you can add on a visit to the Warrumbungles which is home to one of the best walks in NSW. Whichever way you come, you will probably be lucky enough to see at least one Wedge Tailed Eagle and a few Emus along the way.

Public Transport To Lightning Ridge

This trip is split up into a train trip to Dubbo then a coach out to Lightning Ridge. If you don’t want to tackle the 11.5 hour trip in one day, you can do a stop over in Dubbo. Just keep that in mind when booking your tickets as it will automatically set you up with an all day trip if you put in ‘Sydney to Lightning Ridge’.

I love this trip and when not heading to Lightning Ridge with friends, and this is my transport of choice. There is always a guaranteed character on there with you to keep you entertained.

Flying To Lightning Ridge

Alternatively, you could always fly to Moree or Dubbo, and catch a small plane to Lightning Ridge, but it won’t be cheap.

Why Is Lightning Ridge Popular?

Lightning-ridge-nsw

Lightning Ridge is home to the world’s largest black opal mining which is the reason it’s become a well known town in Australia. But there’s so much more which brings tourists to this remote part of NSW. Think hot springs, a unique underground sculpture gallery, a beer can house and so much more!

I come to Lightning Ridge every year because of the healing powers of the bore baths. But, there is a lot more to Lightning Ridge which makes it a trip like no other. Expect eccentric and go with the flow, as this town leans on the weird and wonderful side of life.

There is a combination of free self-drive tours and paid tourist attractions to visit. Camps are built from what people can get their hands on, funny signs on properties abound.

The locals are a mismatched wonder of humans and they’re always friendly. To meet some locals, head down to the local Bowling club or the local pub.  Both have courtesy buses to get you back to your accommodation. The town really is small enough to walk around, so walk into town then courtesy bus home. Be warned though, the burrs are big in The Ridge. Don’t walk barefoot.

Best things To Do In Lightning Ridge

I’m going to share with you the best things to do in Lightning Ridge in NSW so you can get an understanding of why you should visit here. Whatever you do at Lightning Ridge, embrace the quirk and relax. If you don’t explore, it will seem like there is nothing to do. So get exploring.

1. Lightning Ridge Bore Baths

artisan-bore-baths-lightning-ridge-sunrise

Every year when Autumn is hinting of cooling the land down, my body starts to crave the hot healing water of the Lightning Ridge Artesian Bore Baths. It’s an addiction that I never want to give up.

There is nothing better than a midnight dip in steamy water which averages at 45 degrees, looking up at the Milky Way. These baths have healing powers you won’t find in any store, and they are FREE and open 24 hrs (but closed for 1 hr cleaning each day, just before lunch time).

Actually, there may be one thing better than a late-night dip and that is an early morning dip, pre-sunrise. Note – some people find the water too hot and resort to hanging their feet in, some even struggle with that. If you have any aches and pains, these baths are your friend. 10 mins max in the water, then out to cool down, then repeat. Don’t overdo it or you might pass out!

lightning-ridge-bore-baths

Obviously, the Lightning Ridge Bore Baths are the number one attraction as far as I am concerned. Make sure you aim for multiple visits at different times of the day so you get the whole experience. The time of day really makes an impact and you’ll notice how each experience is completely different. Please remember to have a quick shower in the amenities block before getting into the baths. This removes any body oils etc off of you.

2. Chambers Of The Black Hands

Chambers-of-the-Black-Hands-Lightning-Ridge

One of the best things to do in Lightning Ridge is definitely the Chambers Of The Black Hands. It’s an underground gallery with more than 350 sculptures hand carved out of the walls of an old opal mine using a jackhammer, kitchen utensils and a pickaxe.

It’s an absolutely incredible sight to be seen with what I can only describe is of random pieces such as; depictions of The Last Supper, Egyptian tombs, celebrities, buddhas and so much more. It’s also a working piece of art which started nearly 20 years ago and continues on to this day.

Find out more about the Chambers Of The Black Hands here.

3. Black Opal Tours

black-opal-tours-lightning-ridge

A visit to Lightning Ridge wouldn’t be complete without going on a Black Opal tour! They have been operating since 1972 and claimed the title as the best Lightning Ridge tour! The two hour tour will take you around all of the main Lightning Ridge tourist attractions, including the bore baths.

Find out more about the Black Opal Tours here.

4. Free Car Door Tours

day tours lightning ridge

The Car Door Tours are actually free self guided tours in Lightning Ridge, so you can visit all of the tourist attractions in town. You’ll have green car door tour, yellow, red and green to choose from.

The Green Door tour is a must if you like sunsets and strange landscapes. It’s like watching the sunset from the moon. I highly encourage you to pack cheese and crackers and a beverage. Sit back and enjoy.

You can then visit the blue, red and yellow car door tours – pick up the map at the visitors centre and do them all. It’s a free way to see some of the more peculiar sites of the town such as Amigo’s Castle (mentioned in further into this post) and the Lightning Ridge Church, which is actually a prop constructed for the film set of The Goddess 1967.

Make sure you stay on the right roads or you will end up on somebody’s private camp! They are all gravel roads but in clear weather a 2-wheel drive is fine…. ask at the visitor’s centre if you’re unsure. FYI – The green door road can get a bit rough.

Find out more about the Car Door Tours here.

5. Visit Amigo’s Castle

Amigos-Castle-lightning-ridge

Who would have thought you could find a castle in the middle of the outback? The incomplete Italian style castle was built by Vittoria Stefanato, affectionately known as Amigo. It’s a fun place to visit as you enter it through an art gallery to learn all about the history of why it exists. Admission costs just $5 but it’s worth it for the pure quirkiness of it all.

Address: 52 Black Prince Dr, Lightning Ridge NSW 2834

6. John Murray Art Gallery

john-murray-gallery-lightning-ridge

The John Murray Art Gallery is a fantastic gallery showcasing the work of one of the best Australian outback artists, John Murray. You’ll be able to see the true essence of what makes Lightning Ridge’s residents truely shine here, through fun paintings depicting scenes of outback life.

Find out more information about John Murray Art Gallery here.

7. Astronomer’s Castle

Astromoners-castle

And so we have another castle in Lightning Ridge, the Astronomers Castle. Built between 1983 and 1998 by a Polish miner called Alex Szperlak, it was built to celebrate Polish astronomer Copernicus using 20 and 60 litre oil drums to make the structure. It’s known as the Universe Observatory.

8. Bevan’s Cactus Garden

bevans-cactus-ridge

Feel like you’re properly in the desert when visiting the beautiful Bevan’s Cactus Nursery. With over an impressive 2,500 plants, it’s the third largest catcus nursery in the world! When the garden started in 1966, some of the plants are over 150 years old and mostly derive from different parts of the Americas.

9. T he Bottle House

bottle-house-lightning-ridge

Built from an impressive 5,800 bottles, The Bottle House is so random, it would be hard to come to Lightning Ridge and not visit this place. What was once a home to local miners, has now become a museum displaying a gem and rock collection as well as the bottles which makes this house so unique.

10. Beer Can House

Beer-can-house-lightning-ridge

We’ve got two castles to visit and now two homes built out of drinks bottles and cans! The beer can house is definitely more on the quirky side of places to visit but equally as impressive too!

The family who owned this building started with big rocks, but they were too heavy for the children to lift. So they decided to use beer cans instead to create this unique building. You can go on donation based tours around this place to learn more about the history and help preserve it.

11. Black Opal Bull & Bronco

black-opal-bull-and-bronc-ride

A trip to the outback wouldn’t be complete without going to the rodeo! The Black Opal Bull & Bronco is one of the best things to do at night in Lightning Ridge. Literally win your weight in alcohol on the mechanical bull ride competition after the main event.

It’s only held once a year on Easter Weekend, so plan your trip accordingly.

Find out more about the Black Opal Bull & Bronco here.

12. Lightning Ridge Olympic Pool & Water Theme Park

lightning-ridge-water-theme-park-and-olympic-pool

If you’re feeling a bit hot in Lightning Ridge, cool down at the Water Theme Park and Olympic Pool. Although it only operates during the summer months, it’s a great place to spend the afternoon if the Bore Baths become a little too hot for you.

13. Bingo At The Bowls Club

I try and make bingo at the bowls club at least one day I am there, as it’s a fun novelty! They also have social bowls on designated days, along with other events. The bowls club is big, busy and has plenty of variety. The pub is more locals and laid back. Do both, they each give a different experience.

Bonus! The Lightning Ridge Opal Festival

day tours lightning ridge

If you’re planning a trip to Lightning Ridge, it might be worth to co-inside it with the Lightning Ridge Opal Festival which is held in July. You’ll be able to find the world’s best display of black opals and you never know, you might come across an absolutely amazing find.

Best Lightning Ridge Restaurants and Cafes

lightning-ridge-pub

Lightning Ridge isn’t a massive foodie destination but I have to say, I’ve never had a bad meal in the five years I’ve been visiting. There are some great cafes, the pub, the bowling club and two Italian restaurants called Piccolo and Bruno’s to fill your hungry bellies.

If you’re looking for somewhere a little quirky, check out the three pubs in the scrub! There are three pubs in the middle of the Grawin Opal Fields – The Sheepyard Inn, Grawin Club in the Scrub and the Glengarry Hilton are all worth a visit for a cold drink or a meal. 4wd is recommended but 2wd cars have done it, just check with the locals first to find out how the road conditions are.

day tours lightning ridge

Most visitors are staying in self-catered accomodation and there is a large IGA in town, with a bakery across the road. There is also a farmers market truck that visits the front of bowling club on certain days.  And if you’re visiting on a Sunday, check out the bbq breakfast at the famous Sunday Markets which is big and delicious.

Lightning Ridge Accommodation

Opal Caravan Park

My accomodation of choice is the Opal Caravan Park. Why? It’s walking distance to the baths, of course! Mark and his team keep a well-kept park and are always happy to help.

They also have a courtesy bus and if you are travelling by public transport, they can get you to and from the bus stop.  It’s safe to do the 200m walk down to the baths at any time of day or night.  All you need is a towel and don’t forget to take water. These baths are hot!

In winter, you will walk down rugged up then find yourself walking back to the park in your swimmers and the towel and lugging everything else, your body will be red and warm like a soothing glow from a fire.

Day 1  – Depart your Sydney hotel or accommodation at 730 am and enjoy the fresh early light and air of the spectacular Blue Mountains. Visit Katoomba, Leura, Echo Point, Three Sisters, Jamieson Valley (Grand Canyon) and Cliff Drive over Megalong Valley. Enjoy the spectacular view from Govett’s Leap near Blackheath, overlooking the Grosse Valley and spectacular Blue Gum Forest. Descent the 1500 metres of the Great Dividing Range to the western slopes, then down the scenic Jenolan Caves road for a cave tour or nature walk.

Jenolan Caves are the world’s oldest dated caves-over 340 million years old! They contain some of the world’s most spectacular calcite crystal formations, which since 1838 have entranced visitors.

Regarded as Australia’s most outstanding cave system – with 11 spectacular show caves, multi-lingual self-guided tour, pure underground rivers and amazing formations – Jenolan Caves is among the finest and oldest cave systems in the world.

Jenolan Caves is in a huge nature reserve which forms part of the Blue Mountains World Heritage area. You can stroll along a choice of scenic bush tracks (from easy to strenuous), picnic at the Blue Lake, and in the quiet of the early morning or at dusk, see native animals and birds. On almost any day you can spot a platypus, and if overnighting, you are sure to see kangaroos. After a caves tour and nature walk, we enjoy a delicious meal at the local restaurant, before overnight at Caves House.

Day 2: After a healthy breakfast travel through the mountain region to the timber town of Oberon, then the scenic drive into Bathurst. Bathurst was home to New South wales first big gold rush in the 1850s and became home to the Cobb & Co (stage) coach company, who ran the largest transport network in the world with 6,000 horses running daily. Enjoy a look at local history, and this truly pioneering country town before we “head for the hills” and back country via the quaint old gold mining town of Sofala. Rom here we wind our way along the bridle track following the Turon River, to Hill End.

Some history – In 1851, gold was discovered at Hill End, and by 1872, at the height of the great gold rush, the town was the largest inland settlement in NSW. With its museum displays and many preserved buildings, Hill End offers a fascinating insight into the 19th-century gold rush.

This well-preserved, former Bathurst gold-mining town is set in an isolated valley surrounded by rugged mountains and gorges. The rugged scenery has inspired many renowned Australian painters, including Donald Friend and Russell Drysdale, who painted some of the finest Australian landscapes of the 20th century.

In its heyday in the 1870s, Hill End had a population of 10,000 and boasted a kilometre of colourful shopfronts, including 28 pubs, an opium den and an oyster bar. Today you can take a self-guided tour of the gold-rush streetscape, go underground at the Bald Hill Mine or join a ‘fossicking’ tour and search for gold among mounds of old mine tailings.

Time here to enjoy the local history, before travelling back country trails, to arrive at Mudgee, and prosperous volcanic soil wine growing area. Enjoy a tasty lunch at a Winery in Mudgee and enjoy wine tasting at a premium local winery.

Travel on through the old gold mining & historic town of Gulgong – the town (that was) on the $10 note We then head for Ulan, and the Goulburn River & Wollomi National Park, where we take a walk in this beautiful nature. We likely see wild kangaroos as we travel through dense forests and spectacular rock and mountain scenery to descend into the Hunter Valley. Overnight Sandy Hollow.

Day 3: Depart through picturesque rural properties, crossing the Goulburn & Hunter Valley (The Twin Rivers) to follow the Golden Highway in the foothills of Wollomi National Park. Lightning Ridge Expedition

day tours lightning ridge

8 DAY FULLY INCLUSIVE TOUR

THURSDAY 30TH MAY TO THURSDAY 6TH JUNE

There is nowhere in Australia quite like Lightning Ridge.

It is a compelling combination of rural sophistication and the wildly eccentric. There is a moonscape of mullock heaps, under which hundreds of obsessed miners toil and dig in search of the black opals which have made the town famous, juxtaposed against the cosmopolitan Artesian Bore Baths. Many who come to “The Ridge” for just a short time, end up staying a life-time without being able to pinpoint the exact reason.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

The Big Strawberry, Griffith Town Tour, Kidman Way, Great Cobar Outback Heritage Centre, Back of Bourke Exhibition Centre, Lightning Ridge Guided Tour, Chambers of the Black Hand, Opal Mine Adventure, Cactus Farm, Amigos Castle, The Grawin, John Murray Art Gallery, Dubbo, Taronga Western Plains Zoo, CSIRO Radio Telescope ”The Dish”, Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory and Benalla Street Art. MULTIPLE NIGHT STAY 3 nights at Lightning Ridge

DAY 1: THURSDAY 30TH MAY, 2024

MELBOURNE TO GRIFFITH

Welcome to our tour to Lightning Ridge . With chauffeured pickup from home, we are transferred to meet our O’Shannessy’s Quality Tours  luxury coach and crew. From Melbourne we make our way north to The Big Strawberry where we stop for lunch. This afternoon we cross into New South Wales  and through to Griffith . Row upon row, farm upon farm of oranges, grapes, peaches and other delights boldly announce we have entered one of Australia’s most magnificent food and wine producing areas.

OVERNIGHT: Econolodge Griffith Motor Inn, GRIFFITH

DAY 2: FRIDAY 31ST MAY, 2024

GRIFFITH TO COBAR

This morning we visit the Griffith Visitors Centre  where we collect our local expert. Their tour will give us a good introduction to the area and what occurs over a 12 month period, as well as the history of the Griffith area. On the road again, we follow the famous Kidman Way . We travel through quite a few little outback towns like Goolgowi  - the “Crossroads to the Outback” . It’s a relatively new town with settlement occurring in the 1920’s when the Mid-Western Highway and the railway encouraged development. Today the town provides a welcome, restful stop for travellers. We continue on to Hillston ; situated on the banks of the Lachlan River, the town provides a wealth of water orientated activities. The next stop is Mount Hope and this is where we enjoy our lunch.  Copper Ore was discovered here in 1873 on Coan Downs by a shepherd named MacDowall. This discovery led to the opening of the Grade Central, Mount Allen and Mount Solitary Mines. Gold was also mined here.  Mount Hope now has a population of about 20, whereas in its heyday it boasted 3,000.  Mid-afternoon we arrive in Cobar and visit the Great Cobar Outback Heritage Centre incorporating the Regional Museum . The Great Cobar Heritage Centre is the former Administration Building of the Great Cobar Copper Mine. The centre captures the essence of Cobar, with an amazing collection of artefacts revealing the extraordinary and diverse range of local heritage. We then finish our days touring and check into our motel.

OVERNIGHT:  Cobar Town and Country Motor Inn, COBAR

DAY 3: SATURDAY 1ST JUNE, 2024

COBAR TO LIGHTNING RIDGE

We farewell our hosts and head to Bourke , situated on the banks of the Darling River. There are some wonderful historic buildings here including the Carriers Arms Inn, frequented by Henry Lawson in the early 1890s and mentioned in some of his stories.  While we are here, we visit the Back of Bourke Exhibition Centre  that will bring to life the story of Outback New South Wales and of course the Back O’ Bourke. In true country style, we enjoy lunch at the pub – The Port of Bourke Hotel  to be exact. Lightning Ridge is our destination and we aim to get there late afternoon.  This is a three night stop so unpack and get comfortable.

OVERNIGHT: Wallangulla Motel, LIGHTNING RIDGE

DAY 4: SUNDAY 2ND JUNE, 2024

LIGHTNING RIDGE

This morning we are in for an intriguing experience. Visit the Chambers of the Black Hand , an underground gallery with works carved and painted into the walls by the artist, Ron Canlin. There is no subject off limits here as Ron constantly carves his new works. Next, we experience the atmosphere of an underground mine at Opal Mine Adventures . Here we’ll learn about opal mining through a video presentation and visit the showroom to view the opals that came from the mine in this area. Then popping into the Cactus Farm , you’ll be captivated by the beautifully displayed and numerous varieties of cacti. We are then joined by a local guide  who will lead us on a sightseeing tour of this

fascinating outback town before uncovering Amigos Castle , a huge Italian Style Castle built by one man. Later, we’ll return to our hotel and refresh before dinner.

OVERNIGHT:   Wallangulla Motel, LIGHTNING RIDGE

DAY 5: MONDAY 3RD JUNE, 2024

With our local expert joining us again we head out to The Grawin , a group of Opal Fields where the largest opal ‘Light of the World’ was found. Be treated as a local at the welcoming Glengarry Hilton , a unique place for our lunch and no doubt a great place for the Australian larrikin. After our tucker, we head back to ‘The Ridge’ with enough time to take a look at the John Murray Art Gallery . Here John’s kept busy adding to his outside mural, affectionately named ‘Billygoat Lane’.

OVERNIGHT:  Wallangulla Motel, LIGHTNING RIDGE

DAY 6: TUESDAY 4TH JUNE, 2024

LIGHTNING RIDGE TO DUBBO

Farewell to Lightning Ridge as we travel south through Coonamble  and Gilgandra  to Dubbo . We arrive late morning and have some free time to stretch our legs and have some lunch. Dubbo is one of Australia’s largest cities - in population terms it is ranked in the top 40. Unlike many other rural centers throughout Australia, Dubbo has experienced quite dramatic growth over the past decade and now offers all the sophistication of a capital city, without sacrificing the benefits of country life. It is situated in the geographical heart of NSW and has a history that goes back more than 180 years. Dubbo is also home to the Taronga Western Plains Zoo . The zoo is one of the largest in the world, covering some 300 hectares, where animals live in large natural areas behaving very much as they would in the wild. We are joined by a local guide who will board our coach and provide us with an insight into the animals and zoo (with plenty of stops for explanations and photos). After our tour, we have some free time to revisit the animals. We then check into our accommodation.

OVERNIGHT: The Oxley Motel, DUBBO

DAY 7: WEDNESDAY 5TH JUNE, 2024

DUBBO TO WAGGA WAGGA

We have a slightly earlier start this morning; from Dubbo we take the Newell Highway through Peake Hill.  Just north of Parkes, we visit the CSIRO Radio Telescope , also called “The Dish” . The visitors centre features many hands on displays and exhibits and our visit also includes an audio-visual experience. Our lunch venue today is in Grenfell and our afternoon journey takes us through Young  and Cootamundra . We stop in Junee  for a tour of the Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory before the last leg of today’s journey which takes us to Wagga Wagga .

OVERNIGHT: Mercure Wagga Wagga, WAGGA WAGGA

DAY 8: THURSDAY 6TH JUNE, 2024

WAGGA WAGGA TO MELBOURNE

Unfortunately, our holiday is coming to an end and today is mostly a travel day so sit back and enjoy the ride! We stop in Albury for our morning break then drive to Benalla . Here, we’ll take a drive to see some of the Street Art  – artists from around the world were brought together to paint murals on bare walls, some over three stories high.  After lunch, we continue on to Melbourne. As always, our chauffeurs await our arrival to transfer us safely home with memories of a sensational Lightning Ridge tour –  all part of the O’Shannessy’s Quality Tours superior service.

The Black Opal is unique to Lightning Ridge but it is not the only unique thing… the Ridge is also famous for its Car Door Tour so be sure to drop into the Visitor Information Centre for your guide to this special experience.

These quirky journeys are Lightning Ridge’s answer to ‘self drive’ tours and are a great way to start your visit to The Ridge.

The four tours are demarcated by colour coded and numbered car doors.

Blue –Highlights of the Blue Car Door Tour include the Walk-in-Mine which offers self-guided tours down an opal mine and Bevan’s Black Opal & Cactus Nursery with over 2300 species of cacti.

Red –The Red Car Door Tour will take you through a number of opal fields including Hatter’s Flat, Pony Fence and the Telephone Line fields. The tour also includes Amigo’s Castle and Kangaroo Hill.

Green –This tour will take you through various opal fields, including the multi-billion dollar Coocoran Opal Fields (mined 1988 to 1996).

Yellow –This tour allows the visitor to see first-hand various pieces of opal mining equipment as you drive through the various opal fields which include the 3 Mile Opal Field and Lunatic Hill. There are many rusting relics to be seen on this tour. Without doubt, the highlight of this tour is the ‘Chamber of the Black Hand.’ This is both an opal mine and a sculpture gallery.
