21 Spectacular Day Trips from Belgrade
Belgrade is a fantastic city to use as a home base to explore more of Serbia, and whenever we are in town we never run out of things to do here . We find that one of the biggest travel mistakes people make when coming to Serbia is not giving themselves enough time to explore deeply. You definitely want to give the country more than just a day or two. These are our favorite day trips from Belgrade, although some of them certainly deserve more than just a day if you’re able to manage it!
One of the best things about traveling in Serbia is that there’s so much to see within just a few hours of Belgrade. So while we know that travel time can be precious, we’ve included some options that could really be their own two or three-day adventure, but can be achieved in a day from Belgrade when your time is scarce. At the bottom, we’ve also included a few international day trip options for those truly pressed for time.
Where to Stay in Belgrade
Belgrade is spread across two rivers, with multiple neighborhoods providing good options for accommodations. Here are our recommendations for where to stay in Belgrade. Because transportation is generally very economical, there’s no one place we recommend you stay to be able to access the day trips easier.
Generally, budget means hostel beds for around $10 a night and singles/doubles for around $30, mid-range is from about $40-100 per night, and luxury will cost over $100 per night. However, note that availability, time of year, and how much in advance you book will play a role in how much accommodations cost in Belgrade.
Budget: If you want a cozy feeling hostel, Hostel Home Sweet Home in the Savamala neighborhood of Belgrade is a fantastic choice. Its central location close to Knez Mihailova Street and other Belgrade must-sees makes staying here ultra-convenient. It’s sunny and open, with options for dorm rooms as well as affordable single and double rooms for travelers who want a little more privacy without paying a fortune. It’s one of the best-rated options in town, so we recommend you check out availability and book in advance here .
Another popular choice is Balkan Soul Hostel , located in Stari Grad and a convenient walk from all the hot spots like Kalemegdan Park, Belgrade Fortress, and the splavovi on the Sava River. Every bed has its own charging area and lights, which are essential to me when picking a hostel. It has a social atmosphere and friendly staff who can make your stay in Belgrade even more charming. Check out availability and reviews here .
Mid-Range: There are so many great options in this price-range — Belgrade really excels at providing great value when it comes to accommodations in this price tier. One fun option is a floating hotel on the confluence of the Sava and Danube Rivers, San Art Floating Hostel & Apartments . While it’s located in Novi Beograd and therefore a little out of the action, I love the floating deck where you can have sunset drinks, and I like the that the décor is a little bit nostalgic, with details like rotary phones and old radios. You can check it out here .
If you want a more traditional accommodation option, we recommend the affordable four-star Zepter Hotel on Terazije, one of our favorite streets in all of Belgrade. It has all the amenities you’d expect from a 4-star hotel, like a gym room, in-room coffee machine, and a fantastic daily breakfast. Rooms sell out often, so check out availability and book in advance .
Luxury: We’d be remiss if we didn’t suggest the classic luxury option in Belgrade, Hotel Moskva – one of our favorite buildings in the city and a classic haunt of famous politicians, musicians, actors, and other celebrities who pass through Belgrade. It’s also surprisingly affordable for its caliber! With a renowned spa, delicious restaurant (don’t miss the Moskva schnit cake – we love it!), and beautifully designed rooms, it’s one of our favorite places in Belgrade and the location is unbeatable. However, it’s almost always sold out, so be sure to check availability and book well in advance and hope you get lucky!
If you want a more modern take on luxury, in a beautiful boutique hotel that is classy to the nines, we recommend Boutique Garni Hotel Townhouse 27. This hotel is beautifully designed in rich colors, with key details like fresh flowers in the rooms and a gorgeously-presented breakfast. The staff is helpful and courteous and you’ll love the location just off Knez Mihailova in Stari Grad. Check out availability here.

One hour north of Belgrade, if you only do one day trip from Serbia, let it be this! Nicknamed the “Serbian Athens,” Novi Sad has been a site of culture and learning for centuries.
Novi Sad is culturally distinct from Belgrade, as it is part of (and capital of) the autonomous province of Vojvodina . Vojvodina is the part of Serbia that historically was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire and is home to six official languages: Serbian, Hungarian, Romanian, Slovak, Rusyn (a Slavic language similar to Ukrainian), and Croatian. It’s set to be one of the European Capitals of Culture in 2021.
Novi Sad is home to many exciting things to do but chief among them is Petrovaradin Fortress, the beautiful fortress that overlooks the Danube. This is the site of the world-famous EXIT music festival each year — yes, you can actually go to a music festival inside a fortress!
Another must-see is The Name of Mary Church, often called “the Cathedral” although this is technically a misnomer as it is not actually a cathedral but rather just a church. It is unique for Serbia, as it is a Roman Catholic church done in the Austrian style, colorfully tiled roof and all — meanwhile, most churches in Serbia are Eastern Orthodox. There is also a large and important synagogue.
Don’t miss Liberty Square, which is home to some of the most beautiful architecture in Novi Sad, and also you should be sure to visit Dunavksa Street which is home to several kafanas and some of the most colorful buildings in Novi Sad.
We have visited Novi Sad as an independent destination and as a day trip from Belgrade. To visit, you can take a bus, rent a car and drive , or book an organized tour. We went on this tour which includes a wine tasting and a visit to Sremski Karlovci . It was a delightful day, and I can wholeheartedly recommend it. You can check prices and reviews here.
The Palace of Emperor Galerius at Gamzigrad-Romuliana
A three-hour drive east of Belgrade, seeing the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Gamzigrad is a little out of the way but an important stop for any history lovers. Nearly two thousand years ago, the palace at what is now modern Gamzigrad was known as Felix Romuliana. Emperor Galerius named the site after his mother.
Emperor Galerius was born near Serdica (modern Sofia, Bulgaria) and was part of the first tetrarchy, headed by Diocletian. After Diocletian stepped down, Galerius succeeded him as the Emperor. Visiting the site, you can see the fortifications around the palace, a preserved mosaic, some remaining columns, and Magura hill. This hill is where Galerius and his mother Romula underwent apotheosis after their deaths, the process by which a mortal ruler becomes a god. Dating to the third and fourth centuries AD, this is one of the most important ancient Roman sites from the time period.
I visited by hiring a private taxi for the day, which cost about one hundred euros. However, you can also rent a car. I love driving in Serbia! The roads were pleasant the entire way, and we didn’t run into any significant traffic. The drive is about two and a half hours each way, which gives you plenty of time to explore the site.
Golubac Fortress
Sadly, I haven’t made it out to Golubac yet, but this beautiful castle on the Danube is high on my list for my next visit to Serbia! A Serbian Instagram dream, the fortress also has some amazing history which you can learn about on a guided tour from Belgrade that will also include stops at Viminacium and Lepenski (more below). My Serbian tour guide said this is one of his favorite tours to do, so while I haven’t been on it personally, I can’t wait to go back and go! You can check tour prices and reviews here.
You can also get to the fortress by renting a car and driving. Each way is under two hours. There is also the option to take a public bus, which is less than three hours each way. Alternatively, you can hire a driver.
Viminacium & Lepenski Vir
For history and archaeology lovers, combining a day trip to Golubac with stops at Viminacium & Lepenski Vir offers a look into the deep past. Viminacium was an important ancient Roman city, while Lepenski Vir is an archeological site with evidence from the earliest days of humans in Europe. You need a car to visit them, so either rent a car in Belgrade or go on an organized tour that also stops at Golubac. You can check tour prices and reviews here.
Panchevo & Jabuka Memorial Park
If you have access to a car while in Belgrade, a stop at the Jabuka Memorial Park to see the S tratište Memorial Complex. It’s just thirty minutes northeast of the city outside of Panchevo, but you can see the beginnings of the Serbian countryside as you approach the monument.
The memorial is one of the former Yugoslav spomeniks, this one dedicated to the Pančevo Holocaust. It is estimated that 10,000 Jews, Serbs, and Roma were executed here by the Nazis and the Hungarian fascists between 1941 and 1945. The Holocaust in Vojvodina was especially brutal. The Nazi’s labeled their invasion of Yugoslavia “Operation Punishment,” and the Germans and Hungarians carried out this sentiment with thorough brutality.
The monument to this experience, which is currently roped off with orange construction barriers, is also a sign of the tension in Serbia with preserving these vestiges of their Yugoslav past. Don’t worry, the construction doesn’t currently block you from entering the monument, but nevertheless is a sign that preservation is badly needed if these Yugoslav spomeniks are going to be around for future visitors to appreciate.
Another highlight in this area is the Church of the Transfiguration, one of the most unique Orthodox churches in Serbia. The nineteenth-century church combines Byzantine, Serbian, and Rennaisance styles and looks closer to a church from Milan than your typical Balkan Orthodox chapels. Seen from the road on the way to the Jabuka Memorial Park, give yourself an extra few minutes to appreciate this Pancevo landmark.
To visit, you’ll need a car or you can hire a taxi in Belgrade or Panchevo. The monument is outside of town and inaccessible by public transit.
Boasting over one hundred thousand visitors annually, most of them local Serbians, Topola isn’t exactly a well-guarded secret. However, it’s not nearly as popular with foreign tourists as it should be! Called Serbia’s “royal heart and soul,” this is where the Karađorđevic dynasty’s family mausoleum is. Nearly thirty Serbian royals are buried here.
You can also visit the house of King Peter, who was the king on the eve of World War I. However, the highlight for many will be the Karađorđevic family wineries. Topola has been an important wine region in Serbia since Roman times, earning the more recent nickname “Provence in the middle of Šumadija.”
To visit Topola, you can drive about seventy-five minutes each way or take a ninety-minute bus ride. For those who want to learn along the way, and avoid needing to hire a taxi once there, you can go on an organized tour of Topola and Oplenac. You can check tour prices and reviews here.
Studenica and Sopocani Monasteries
If you want to see some of the most beautiful monasteries in Serbia from Belgrade, you’ll need to get up early! While these two UNESCO World Heritage Sites are situated in the south near Kosovo and Novi Pazar, they are an ambitious but feasible day trip from Belgrade.
I visited both when staying in Novi Pazar by hiring a private driver who took me to Belgrade at the end of the day, so I know that it’s a long day but you can accomplish visiting from Belgrade if you rent a car or hire a driver. I paid sixty euro for the taxi for the entire day, but if you start in Belgrade and then return, you will obviously pay more. I’ve also paid one hundred euro for a private driver for the day when I visited Gamzigrad. Renting a car for the day might be less expensive, but not by much since driving in Serbia can get expensive.
Sopocani Monastery is four and a half hours from Belgrade by car. Studenica is there and a half hours. Total drive time from Belgrade to both monasteries and back is a little over nine hours, so if you give yourself about an hour at each monastery and an hour for lunch, you’re looking at a very long but manageable day.
I would not recommend doing this as a day trip via public transportation.
The Sargan 8, Mokra Gora, and Drvengrad
The Sargan 8 Railroad leaves from Mokra Gora and is said to be one of the most beautiful train rides in Europe. While many tourists head to Mokra Gora to enjoy a few days of peaceful relaxation or, in the winter, to enjoy the Balkan ski resort of Zlatibor, you can also visit as a day trip from Belgrade. The train ride is on a narrow gauge track, and the trains have a historic look and feel. Make sure to also stop by the Ethno village of Drvengrad.
You can drive from Belgrade to Mokra Gora in about four hours or take a five-hour bus ride. However, because you’ll be coordinating your arrival times with the Sargan 8 train schedule, we recommend going on an organized tour. You can check tour prices and reviews here.

Sitting near the border of Kosovo in southern Serbia, Novi Pazar has a very different look and feel to other Serbian cities . This is the cultural center for Serbian Bosniaks, and this is one of the few places in Serbia where sightseeing lists will include historic mosques and other important Islamic sites.
When I visited Novi Pazar, I was coming from Pristina in Kosovo, so I didn’t appreciate yet how different the city is from the rest of the country. Now that I’ve explored the country more in-depth, I have a real love for Novi Pazar and how it displays its multiculturalism proudly.
To visit Novi Pazar as a day trip, your best bet is to rent a car or hire a driver. The trip takes about four hours if you drive, but the bus can take four and a half hours or longer each way.

Also in Nis, you can visit the Crveni Krst Concentration Camp, where Jews, Romani, communists, and anti-fascist activists were imprisoned and killed during the Nazi occupation of Serbia.
If you drive, the trip from Belgrade to Nis is about two and a half hours each way. There are also pretty frequent buses. Each is about three hours of travel time.
If you would rather join an organized tour of Nis from Belgrade, this one goes to Nis and also to Devil’s Town. You can check tour prices and reviews here.
Resava Valley
Tourists who take a day trip to Resava usually go to explore Resava cave, as well as the nearby monasteries of Ravanica and Manasija. It’s no secret we love a good cave! While we’ve explored many caves in Bulgaria , we’re still seeking out Serbia’s caves for future adventures.
If you choose to DIY your day trip, you can drive to Resava Cave in about two hours or you can take the bus that will last about three. Alternatively, you can join an organized tour of this part of Serbia. You can check tour prices and reviews here.
Zasavica Nature Reserve

You can visit Zasavica by car. The drive is about an hour west of Belgrade. You can also reach it by bus, which takes a little over an hour and a half.
If you want to explore more of Vojvodina and see Zasavica in the same day, this tour combines Fruska Gora with Zasavica as well as stopping at the ancient Roman city of Sirmium. You can check tour prices and reviews here.
Uvac Special Nature Reserve
By Anja Ignjatovic – Own work , CC BY-SA 4.0 , Link
Located near Novi Pazar in southwestern Serbia, Uvac Special Nature Reserve is renowned worldwide for its beauty and for the ecological work done there. Highlights of a day trip to Uvac include relaxing on the river, boating, and bird watching. The rare Gryffin Vulture is native to this part of Serbia, and getting to see it is a delight for bird lovers.
There are two options for visiting Uvac from Belgrade. The first is to rent a car or hire a driver since the reserve is four hours southwest of Belgrade. There is also an organized tour that includes transportation, a guide, and an organized boat ride on the lake. You can check tour prices and reviews here.
Visiting Zagreb as a DIY day trip wouldn’t normally be feasible. The bus and trains are over eight hours each way. I visited Zagreb after taking the overnight train from Belgrade, and that was exhausting! However, if you’re dying to get a taste of Croatia’s capital, then I suggest you explore going on this guided day tour. The price is extremely reasonable (cheaper than renting a car), and they’ll transport you door-to-door.
If you do choose to drive, the trip takes about four hours. Because you’ll be crossing a border, make sure to pre-arrange with your rental company to get the green card to cross the border.
I highly recommend going the tour route, though. Even though I’ve already been to Zagreb, if I had to do it as a day tour from Belgrade I would go on the tour. It would just be too hectic and time-consuming to try to do on my own. You can check prices and reviews here.
If you’re dying to see Budapest, you have two options for making this into a day trip. The drive time each way is about four hours, but if you’re renting a car you’ll need to get clearance ahead of time to cross the border. Since the buses and trains take over six hours each way, I would not recommend going to Budapest from Belgrade via public transportation unless you have at least two days.
The second option is to go on an organized tour. While we think there’s much more to explore in Budapest than you can possibly do in a single day, we understand that you might only have enough time to see it as a day trip. Like I stated for Zagreb, if you want to do this as a day trip I would advise going with a company who will handle everything for you so that you can enjoy your day. You can check tour prices and reviews here.
Don’t Travel to Belgrade without Travel Insurance
Finally, make sure you always travel to Belgrade with a valid travel insurance policy. While the city is a very safe place to travel these days, you want to make sure you have your possessions covered if they’re stolen and your medical bills covered if you get sick or injured. This is especially true if you plan on enjoying the city’s nightlife or doing any outdoor activities.
For travel insurance, I use World Nomads . I’ve been a happy customer of theirs for almost three years, and I’ve never had an issue when making a claim. I’m happy to refer them to anyone I meet.

Hi Stephanie and Allison. Where is this gorgeous little town in the first photo? The one with the church and the red rooftops? It’s so beautiful!
Hi Kris! That’s the view from the Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad, which is our #1 day trip recommendation from Belgrade (we especially like the tour we suggested here which covers Novi Sad, Petrovaradin, Krusedol Monastery, and wine tasting in Fruska Gora) Hope you enjoy your trip to Serbia!
Hi Stephanie andAllison, I thoroughly enjoyed your blog of 21 spectacular days in Serbia. I’m going there in April through to June. I was born in Vojvodina 60 years ago and left the country with my parents when I was 10 years old. This is my first time back. I will be there from 7 April 10 June. I have arranged for a car for the whole time. I’ve arranged to visit Dalmatian Coast for 12 days from Zadar then Split, Dubrovnik and last stop Kotor in Montenegro. So essentially I have 6 weeks to explore the country. I’m going to drive from Novi Sad to Budapest for 3-4 days and will visit all those places you mentioned in Vojvodina including my place of birth which is Novi Becej. Then from Budapest I’ll drive to Zadar to continue my Dalation Coast tour. After that I’ll go to Belgrade for 7 days and then head south to visit all those places you mentioned. I’m thinking of going to Montenegro as well. I’ll have 4 weeks left after 7 days in Beograd. I have never found out why everyone calls Beograd Belgrade. Sorry I digressed. Do you know? My question after this long winded message is I have 4 weeks to see south Serbia and Montenegro which I think would be more than enough time. I love historical buildings. I’m not much into nature being city bred. Any suggestions as to where else in that region I can go? I thank you for your time and look forward to your reply. Regards Susan Hill
Hi Susan, wow, what a fun adventure you’ll have! Belgrade is the Anglicization of Beograd — same as how we call Munchen Munich, Praha Prague, etc. — no rhyme or reason to it. We recommend Tivat, Perast, Kotor, Ulcinj, Bar, Budva, and Cetinje in Montenegro and Nis, Kragujevac, Studenica Monastery, and Novi Pazar in Southern Serbia. If you need help planning an itinerary, we can offer you itinerary planning services at the link above on the top of this page, which we do for a fee.

19 Awesome Day Trip Ideas from Belgrade
When you have just one day to spare but you’ve already explored every nook and cranny of Belgrade, what can you do to make the best use of your time?
Well, visiting a new destination is always a smart choice. Here are some of our recommendations.
Zlatibor probably replaced Kopaonik at the very top of the most popular Serbian winter resorts as thousands of tourists flock to this spot every chance they can get.
This does not sit right with many of the locals, as they claim that the mass construction is ruining the natural beauty of the mountain, but it’s difficult or downright impossible to stop the progress once it gets going.
Truth be told, this is most frequently an exaggeration, as Zlatibor is still a captivating destination to visit. In case you want to avoid the huge crowds, just don’t go there during the national holidays and you should be fine.
For a one-day trip, we wouldn’t realistically recommend you buy a ski pass, but if you want to go on a quick hike, eat some mouth-watering local food (a dish called “komplet lepinja” is a must), and enjoy the sights, Zlatibor is definitely a worthy destination .
Carska bara
All fans of wildlife and especially rare birds should definitely put Carska bara on their list. Being close to Belgrade is also a big plus, as it takes just more than one hour to reach it. Due to its swamp-like nature, Carska bara is also unique and offers a plethora of vegetation you won’t be able to see elsewhere.
Our advice would be to take a short boat ride along the “Path of Health”, where you’ll be able to learn a thing or two about the flora and fauna from the local guides. Some legends even claim that the famous Attila the Hun was impressed with its beauty.
Ethno Village Tiganjica
Still, I have to be honest here and admit that the best thing about this area in my book is the Ethno Village Tiganjica.
People come here from Belgrade just to have lunch, and it’s always jam-packed with guests, so make sure to book your seat ahead of time. The food is jaw-dropping, the atmosphere is unique and very relaxing, and it even has a local zoo where people of all ages can unwind.
P.S. In case you decide to go to Tiganjica, be sure to pet a local parrot named Đole, he is a bit of a celebrity around here.
Krupajsko vrelo
Here us out, I know that the drive to Krupajsko Vrelo from Belgrade is more than two hours long, but once you get there, you’ll see that it was worth it. Mind you, the photo that you are about to see is not edited in any way.
The entire location is a natural monument due to its outstanding beauty and uniqueness. One thing that we have to be honest about is the quality of food in a nearby restaurant that leaves a lot to be desired. Naturally, some people appreciate the view more than others, so we’ll let you decide on your priorities.
Being located just north of the above-mentioned destinations, you can always spend some time in Krupajsko vrelo and later on continue your journey to Resava. However, for those who want to capture an Instagram-worthy photo or two, Krupajsko vrelo is in a league of its own.
Ethno Village Stanišići
If you want to step back in time when the buildings were made of stone, streets were cobbled and the ponds were extremely clean, Stanišići is the way to go. Ok, this might be more of a trip to a fairyland than it is a journey through time, but it is remarkable either way.
Unlike all other entities from this list, Stanišići is located in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but being that it’s less than two hours away from Belgrade, we decided to mention it either way. With its unique architecture and displays of cultural heritage, as well as stunning natural surroundings, this place will win you over in no time.
You don’t even have to be a photography enthusiast to capture the best photo of your life here. Just point your phone in whichever direction and you’ll end up with something that will blow you away.
The restaurants here are very nice, offer fantastic food and are fairly affordable. All in all, it’s a true wonderland.
Just one hour away from Belgrade is one of the biggest cities in Serbia, Novi Sad. It is also a well-known city in Europe, as it served as a European Capital of Culture in the year 2022.
Others love it because of Exit, one of the biggest festivals on the continent, but for most Belgrade residents, Novi Sad is just a perfect one-day getaway.
To get from Belgrade to Novi Sad you don’t even have to drive there, as the Soko train will take you from Belgrade to Novi Sad in half an hour. After you check out the city center, hop over to Petrovaradin Fortress from where you can have a panoramic view of the entire city. If you are a fan of murals, street art in Novi Sad is amazing .
While you are there, on your way back make sure to stop by Sremski Karlovci . Even though this place is minuscule, it is incredibly cozy and wonderful. The local restaurant called “Pasent” is another recommendation from us. Although it is a bit pricy, it sure is beautiful and the food is excellent.
Near the modern-day town of Kostolac, about 100km away from Belgrade we find the ancient Roman city known as Viminacium. This huge archeological site contains the remnants of ancient buildings, spas, streets and tombs, making it one of the most significant Roman sites in Europe.
You can buy a ticket on the spot and join the guided tours to find out more about this location and get an insight into the lives of people who inhabited Viminacium centuries ago.
As you can see from the photo, they even have a mammoth skeleton on display. It is called Vika, and it’s presumably dating back from one million years ago.
Subotica and Palić Lake
Near the border with Hungary, just two hours away from Belgrade is the city of Subotica and its accompanying Palić lake.
Many claim that Subotica is in fact the prettiest city in Serbia, and they might just have a point there.
On the other hand, Palić is one of the most famous lakes in the nation, known for its serene nature, making it an ideal family weekend getaway. The young ones will also enjoy the zoo, which is not huge in size, but is beautiful nonetheless.
Vrnjačka Banja
As one of the most popular Spas in Serbia, Vrnjačka Banja attracts thousands of tourists every year. Being located two and a half hours away from Belgrade, what is so special about it that you absolutely have to visit it?
Well, for those interested in health tourism, Vrnjačka Banja offers a plethora of wellness programs, ideal for everyone who wants to get away from all the stress and noise. However, if sightseeing is your cup of tea, the lush parks full of greenery or the river banks ideal for strolling will capture your imagination.
If you visit it during the summer months, you might catch one of many festivals that take place in Vrnjačka Banja, when this place really comes alive.
A nature reserve that is home to many endangered species of animals and plants, Zasavica is located just 60 minutes away from Belgrade. Perhaps the best-known feature of Zasavica is its donkey farm, where visitors can walk among the animals, pet them and just enjoy the relaxing views of this protected area.
Many also purchase the donkey cheese and milk produced on the farm, known for their medicinal and nutritional purposes. The local restaurants offer just two meals, roasted mangulica meat and mangulica stew. In case you were wondering, we are talking about pork meat from a local breed, that is absolutely delicious.
Although the photo that you are about to see was not captured on a particularly sunny day, nor was it taken by a professional photographer, we believe that it still does a fine job of displaying the beauty of Uvac.
The meandering path that the Uvac River leaves is best viewed from a highpoint inside its canyon, which is accessible only as a part of a guided boat tour. It also includes the walk through the Ice cave, which is not exactly covered in ice, but it is very impressive and also quite chilly, so be sure to bring your jacket during this visit.
The nearby Zlatar mountain was a popular retreat in the past, but nowadays it is slightly forgotten by most tourists, who migrated to nearby Zlatibor mountain. Still, for those who love to take a breath of fresh air and get away from popular tourist destinations, this fact can only go to its advantage.
Because it’s a four-hour drive to Zlatar from Belgrade, make sure to start your journey as early in the morning as possible. If you have more time, stop by lake Kokin Brod, which is especially stunning during the summer, when it is suitable for swimming as well.
For many Serbians, the Tara mountain is the most stunning natural park in the country, and Drvengrad is a wooden city built right next to it. Originally, this place served as a filming ground for Emir Kusturica’s movie Life is a miracle, but nowadays it is a popular tourist attraction on its own.
Although Drvengrad is small, it has several tiny streets that are named in honor of famous Serbians such as Novak Đoković and Ivo Andrić, but also world-famous Maradona and Che Guevara.
We would feel comfortable with recommending Tara as a quick one-day getaway, because this mountain deserves more of your time, but you can at least check out some of the most famous Tara attractions while visiting Drvengrad, which will inspire you to come back to it as soon as possible.
Cer mountain
For Serbian people, Cer Mountain is not just special because of its beauty. During the First World War, the Serbian army was able to defeat the Austro-Hungarian conquerors here, which was considered one of the major heroic feats of the entire war. Located approximately 120km from Belgrade, it is easily accessible by car and the drive to this mountain lasts less than two hours.
Nowadays, Cer is a popular hiking destination, known for its fresh air and scenic beauty. When you get tired from all the hiking, you can take a break and eat some delicious wild game stews in the Mountain lodge Lipove Vode, located near the highest mountain peak.
When it comes to nearby locations, you can always drive to the Kaona monastery, dating from as early as the 11 th century, but it was rebuilt several times. The entire area surrounding the monastery is well-maintained and it is a place where you can truly relax and feel every ounce of stress leaving your body.
Sitting proudly on the Danube river, close to the Romanian border, the Golubac Fortress is another popular destination you should not miss.
This medieval stronghold was a crucial point for nations that wanted control over the traffic routes that used the Danube, so it’s no wonder why this fortress saw that many battles in the past.
In current times, it serves as a sort of monument in the open, allowing visitors a great look into the medieval way of life. Once you are there, you can check out the National Park Đerdap as well, for some great sightseeing opportunities.
Valjevo is one of those hidden gems, a city that blends cultural heritage with an urban lifestyle and stunning natural scenery. It is one of the oldest cities in Serbia, but it became especially important during the Ottoman rule, which lasted for two centuries.
For those who enjoy an occasional getaway in nature, the Gradac Canyon is a can’t-miss destination, as it is located close to Valjevo but it feels very secluded and peaceful, and the Gradac River is also among the cleanest rivers in the country. Just be careful, even though it is very shallow during the summer months, it can be very cold, so it’s not suitable for all swimmers.
Local coffee shops and restaurants are rather affordable, but even if that was not the case, can you really put a price tag on this sunset? The picture was taken from a restaurant located on the river Kolubara.
The mountain on which the Divčibare plateau is located is called Maljen and it is a place of great natural beauty, just 90 minutes away from Belgrade. For me personally, this might be the most beautiful mountain in Serbia, which is not an overstatement.
While it is possible to practice winter sports here as well, Divčibare is not a tall mountain and it has a mild climate, so it might be best to visit it during the spring, when the vegetation is thriving.
You can also spend the night here at one of many hotels or private accommodations. Local delicacies usually include goat or veal stews, but there are lots of restaurants nearby where you can enjoy international cuisine as well.
Veliki Buk and Resava Cave
Veliki Buk or Lisine are a series of waterfalls, located in Eastern Serbia, just north of the city of Kragujevac. While not great in size, they make up for it in beauty.
The locally grown trout, which constantly swim upstream is tremendous, and the fact that you can eat it while sitting in a restaurant underneath the waterfall makes it that much better.
After you spend some time in Lisine, you can take a quick drive to the Resava (Manasija) monastery. Built inside a stone castle that used to contain 11 towers, this monastery is truly impressive and walking along its walls will inevitably bring about the thoughts of medieval battles that took place inside of it.
While you are there, one thing you cannot miss is the Resava Cave, a 4.5km long wonder that draws thousands of tourists every year. The decorative lights cast interesting shadows of stalactites and stalagmites which simply cannot be captured in all of its beauty in a single photo. Just be careful about your choice of footwear, as it can be extremely slippery here.
The day trip from Belgrade is just about enough to visit all of these places, but you have to plan your routes ahead of time, as the Resava cave is only open to visitors through guided tours, so take into consideration that it can be a good idea to buy your ticket ahead of time.
We won’t lie to you, Vršac is a small place that will not blow you away with its majestic skyscrapers, but that’s not something Serbia is known for either way. What this place has is the soul of a small town, a plethora of gorgeous properties built in the baroque style and some very friendly locals.
Also, when visiting Vršac, you would be foolish not to go to the Ethno House Dinar, one of the finest restaurants in Serbia. This might sound silly to some, but people cross the border from Romania just to come to this place. It is that good. However, be warned, even though Dinar is not a small place, you should definitely leave a reservation ahead of time, or you might miss out.
Despite the fact that Niš is not exactly close to Belgrade, you would be foolish not to visit it if you had the chance. As the biggest city in the South of Serbia, Niš offers something for everybody. First of all, their barbecue is amazing, and we’re not even talking about no fancy restaurants. When it comes to Niš, street food is the way to go.
Once you get your belly full, it might be a smart idea to walk off some of those calories, which you can do by visiting the older part of town or strolling by the river before you eventually sit for a cup of coffee in the Niš fortress. The nearby mountains are also beautiful, and if you decide to stick around for a couple of days, be sure to check them out as well.
Little Danube (Mali Dunav)
Last weekend, we were searching for a place nearby for a day trip. We didn’t want to spend most of the day driving. After asking some friends, we found out about Mali Dunav. It’s a spot only 20 minutes from the capital’s center and is often called a nature lover’s Disneyland because it’s really great for kids.
Mali Dunav is about 12 kilometers from Belgrade’s center, in Vinča. There’s a model of the Danube River there, which is more than 1,000 meters long. The water in Mali Dunav is from deep springs, over 120 meters below ground, and it comes up at a made-up source designed like the real Danube River’s source in the Black Forest.
At this place, you can see a public aquarium with fish from the Danube, a zoo with water birds, a little botanical garden for water plants, a spot with marsh turtles, an Alaskan cabin that’s a fishing museum, a house on the water, and areas focused on water, evolution, and prehistoric fishing. You can fish, boat on Mali Dunav, or just enjoy the outdoors.
They’re open every day, 8 AM to 4 PM on weekdays and 8 AM to 6 PM on weekends. A ticket without a guide costs 300 dinars, and a family ticket is 200 dinars.

12 Recommended Day Trips From Belgrade, Serbia
Written by our local expert Bram
Bram was born and raised in Belgium and has traveled the Balkans & beyond. He is a professional freelance travel writer and photographer specializing in outdoor travel with an emphasis on national parks, nature, and wildlife.
While there are plenty of things to do in Belgrade, you should definitely also take the time to explore some other places in Serbia when visiting the country. Here is a list of the best day trips from Belgrade, Serbia.
While there may be plenty of things to do in Belgrade , you should take the time to explore some other places in Serbia when visiting the country, even if you try the great Serban food.
Belgrade is the nation’s premier tourist destination and a great home base for exploring the country as the capital city. It’s the hub of commerce, arts, culture, etc. That all, of course, makes the city quite a busy place . So, if you’d like to escape the big bustling city, you can go on one of these day trips from Belgrade .
Skip Ahead To My Advice Here!
Day Trip Ideas From Belgrade
Serbia is not that big a country, and you can get pretty much anywhere in the country from Belgrade within just a few hours’ drive . Most day trips from Belgrade below are less than two hours by car from the capital. Easy-peasy! It’s time to rent a car and hit the road with this list of great ideas!
1. Fruška Gora National Park
Undoubtedly, one of Belgrade’s most popular destinations, Fruška Gora National Park, is named after Fruška Gora. The mountain is the park’s centerpiece, but there’s much more to it. This mountain used to be an island in the ancient Pannonian Sea.
This gorgeous area in northern Serbia is characterized by everything from rolling meadows and vineyards to waterfalls and natural hot springs . On top of that, there are also more than a dozen centuries-old monasteries . Serbia’s oldest national park should be among your first options if you want to leave the busy city behind and get back to nature.
2. Novi Sad
Serbia’s second-largest city, Novi Sad , lies near Fruška Gora National Park and is one of the country’s most livable cities. This is where you’ll find welcoming city parks, a thriving music scene, great art galleries, charming outdoor cafes, and busy bars. Architecture lovers will also appreciate this historic city boasting both Serbian and Hungarian architecture.
Additionally, Novi Sad hosts the famous EXIT Festival each year. This is one of southeastern Europe’s biggest music festivals , attracting many thousands of party-goers from all over the continent.

3. golubac fortress.
The imposing Golubac Fortress, dating from the 14th century, is one of Serbia’s most remarkable historic structures. It lies on the banks of the Danube River in northeastern Serbia and on the border with Romania .
Its strategic location, the very spot where the river is at its most powerful as it squeezes through a majestic gorge in the Carpathian Mountains, known as the Iron Gates of the Danube, has made it a much-desired stronghold over the centuries.
Everyone from the Hungarians and the Austrians to the Turks and the Serbs themselves once controlled this mighty fortress. Its setting is unquestionably gorgeous, situated right at the entrance of Đerdap National Park.
4. Đerdap National Park
Đerdap National Park protects about 100 kilometers of land along the Danube River, from the Golubac Fortress to the Novi Sip dam. The park’s width ranges between 2 and 8 kilometers. Its main feature is Đerdap Gorge—the Iron Gate—a narrow gateway through the Carpathians’ rocky slopes.
The park is open year-round and can be explored by boat on the Danube, by car on its main road, and foot or bicycle on various mountain trails.
5. Sremski Karlovci
The village of Sremski Karlovci might not be big at all, but its sheer beauty makes it one of Belgrade’s most incredible day trips. Located near Novi Sad , about an hour’s drive from the capital, this might be the prettiest village in the entire country.
Set on the Danube’s banks and within striking distance from the green hills of Fruška Gora, Sremski Karlovci is renowned for its long history, rich cultural heritage , and—most of all—for its wineries. Check out the numerous religious buildings in the village center before heading out for an afternoon of wine tasting .
6. Studenica Monastery
One of the five UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Serbia , the Studenica Monastery is probably the grandest Orthodox monastery in the country. A complex fortified dates from 1190, when it was founded by Stevan Nemanja, who incidentally also founded the very state of Serbia.
Religion and culture go hand in hand in Serbia , two essential aspects of the country’s national heritage, and there’s no better structure to show that to you than this impressive monastery. Take the time to admire the 13th- and 14th-century Byzantine art inside its two large churches.
For more info on Serbia’s UNESCO sites, check out this guide.
The small town of Topola in central Serbia may seem rather unassuming, but it does have a serious claim to fame. The beauty of this off-the-beaten-path region did not go unnoticed by the former Serbian royal family. It was most specifically the house of Karađorđević who constructed the magnificent St. George Church on Oplenac Hill. Now, the church is the family’s mausoleum.
Topola still is a great, albeit undiscovered, wine region in Serbia. This is another excellent destination for day trips from Belgrade, particularly if you’re after a combination of local history, architecture, wine, and a great place to pick up a bottle of wine or two to take home! House Karađorđević also had several vineyards and cellars built in and around the town.
8. Drvengrad
One of Belgrade’s most fun day trips is the drive to Drvengrad , located about 200 kilometers from the Serbian capital. Film director Emir Kusturica built this wonderful traditional ethno village for his movie Life Is a Miracle .
This collection of beautiful wooden buildings sits on Mećavnik Hill in the Mokra Gora Nature Park, where the iconic Serbian mountains Zlatibor and Tara meet. Its name means “Timber Town,” Drvengrad is better known worldwide as Küstendorf. The town has a library, cinema, cake shop, art gallery, and a restaurant serving traditional Serbian food .
9. Smederevo (Fortress)
Back in the Middle Ages, the fortified town of Smederevo was the capital of Serbia. Its star attraction is the imposing Smederevo Fortress. Built between 1427 and 1430, it is one of the most significant military structures ever constructed in Serbia and one of the largest fortresses in southeastern Europe.
This mighty fortress on the Danube River’s right bank weathered several sieges by both Ottomans and Serbs and is now regarded as the last major masterpiece of Serbian architecture of the time. Currently, it is open to the public and is an urban park. A theater stands inside, a popular venue for concerts, fairs, and festivals.
The Smederevo Fortress is no more than 45 kilometers southeast of Belgrade, making it a top destination for short Belgrade excursions.
10. Obedska Bara Nature Reserve
Less famous than other nature reserves and parks in this list of Belgrade day trips, the Obedska Bara Nature Reserve is no less beautiful. This expansive area of swamps and forests is one of the best birding destinations near Belgrade . It is an official Important Bird Area on UNESCO’s list of most essential wetland areas globally.
Obadska Bara is an oxbow-shaped lake, a previous part of the scenic Sava River. Its shallow water offers ideal habitat for all kinds of fauna and flora. The lake is thirteen kilometers long and up to 750 meters wide at specific points, yet the average water level doesn’t exceed 2.5 meters.
This is a fantastic place for Belgrade day tours , particularly for nature lovers, because it’s one of the oldest protected natural areas in the world. It was first preserved as early as 1874 by the Habsburg Empire—that’s only two years later than Yellowstone National Park, the world’s oldest national park!

11. Resava Cave
Another beautiful natural attraction you can visit on day trips from Belgrade is the Resava Cave. Situated near the town of Jelovac in eastern Serbia, this impressive cave has guided tours that lead through majestic subterranean halls and passageways. It is one of Serbia’s most extensive cave systems.
12. Lepenski Vir And Viminacium
History buffs will certainly be interested in visiting Lepenski Vir from Belgrade . Located in eastern Serbia, this fascinating archaeological site comprises one of the oldest preserved settlements in Europe. The place was used by the Balkans’ Mesolithic Iron Gates culture, which dates from about 9,500 to 7,200 BC. Numerous beautifully preserved architectural features and sculptures have been discovered at Lepenski Vir, called “the first city in Europe.”
Additionally, there’s another fantastic archaeological site nearby. Known as Viminacium, this site was a major military camp and city in the Roman province of Moesia, modern-day Serbia.
This ancient city dates from the 1st century AD and its archaeological remains consist of temples, palaces, streets, Roman baths, amphitheaters, and squares. Viminacium is famous for its unusually high number of graves. There are 15,000 of those, the highest number of Roman archaeological sites worldwide .

SERBIAN HERITAGE includes Serbs' cultural heritage and the cultural heritage of all ethnic groups that have lived on the territory of present Serbia, such as Germans, Jews, Hungarians, Greeks, etc.
A knowledgeable Serbian Heritage Interpreter's role is crucial during cultural tours, especially when visiting Serbian medieval Orthodox monasteries. 7 Amazing Day Trips From Belgrade, Serbia
Belgrade is undoubtedly the number one spot in Serbia. It is the capital, the biggest city, the centre of everything that happens in the country and a lot more. It also happens to be more than a little exhausting, and escaping the chaos for a day is often the best kind of medicine. Luckily for one and all, there’s a whole heap of excellent spots just an hour or two away from the capital. If you’re looking for nature, history, food and the rest, you are in the right place.
Some might scoff at the idea of a somewhat industrial city being singled out as an amazing day trip from the capital, but don’t you dare think about selling Kragujevac short. The fourth biggest city in the country and less than a two-hour drive from Belgrade, Kragujevac was actually the first modern capital of Serbia and is home to the nation’s grammar school and print works. The city is also home to a huge spomenik (monument) park, built in remembrance of local citizens massacred by the Nazis during World War II. The park has many monuments hidden within, with the iconic ‘Interrupted Flight’ no doubt the most famous. The city itself is an energetic and exciting spot but the park is the dictionary definition of sombre.
Serbia’s second city, Novi Sad, carries itself like a capital in its own right. Located just over an hour north of Belgrade, the Vojvodinian capital is known for its annual EXIT Festival but offers a whole lot more than drunk backpackers dancing to The Prodigy. The fortress at Petrovaradin might be the city’s main event, but be sure to leave plenty of time for the city centre itself. That city centre is an enchanting mixture of classic Serbian and Hungarian architecture, clearly identifying Novi Sad as a city with a fractured history. The restaurants, cafes and bars are up to Serbian standards too, and dom b-612 is one of the finest cultural centres in the country.
Despite being incorrectly and insultingly described as ‘Abandoned Soviet Monuments from the Future Past’ by Buzzfeed, the spomeniks that dot the landscape of what was once Yugoslavia are more than worth exploring further. Some are in pristine condition where others are completely destroyed, but all have a place in the grand tale of Yugoslavia. Just an hour south of the capital is the Kosmaj monument – a huge concrete structure honouring those from the area who died in the National Liberation Struggle of World War II. Five huge concrete fins combine to create a star, approached by a grand staircase from the road below. The monument has been somewhat neglected in previous years but it is still an awesome sight to behold.
Sremski Karlovci
Suffice it to say, this is one of our favourites. Sremski Karlovci is an absolute delight of a village situated close to Novi Sad and just an hour or so north of the Serbian capital. It isn’t a huge place (it is a village after all), but every single street is worth strolling down and checking out. Vojvodina may well be the prettiest part of Serbia, and it takes something special to be the prettiest part of that most beautiful region. Sremski Karlovci takes home that particular biscuit in its position as the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the Habsburg Monarchy affording it several privileges throughout history. If you only visit one town outside of Belgrade, make it Sremski Karlovci.
Golubac Fortress
Situated right on the border between Serbia and its neighbour Romania, Golubac Fortress is one of the most impressive sights in the entire nation. A 14th century construction, Golubac has experienced plenty of ups and downs in the seven centuries since then – passing through the hands of Turks Hungarians, Serbs, Austrians and others before finally staying with the Serbs in the late 19th century. The fortress has seen better days in terms of its current stability but then who wants to see a perfectly preserved complex from 600 or more years ago? History is supposed to crumble, and Golubac has retained just enough of its shape to give an idea of how immense it may once have been. It is also an excellent spot on any respected tour of the Danube, second only to the Volga when it comes to rivers in Europe.
Obedska Pond
A swamp might not exactly sound like the most inviting spot for a day trip away from the Serbian capital, but anyone harbouring such a mindset is only going to be missing out on what is a veritable treasure trove of nature. There are over 200 different species of bird at Obedska Pond alone, to go with over 50 types of mammal and a host of amphibians and reptiles. More importantly, Obedska Pond is one of the oldest nature reserves on the planet, with protected status being afforded to it in 1874. Despite the abundance of life that thrives there, Obedska is every bit as tranquil as Belgrade is chaotic, making it the perfect getaway for anyone looking to sit in silence for a little while.

Fruška Gora
While we don’t want to go out and state the completely obvious, if you visit Serbia without visiting Fruška Gora then you’ve barely visited Serbia at all. Fruška Gora itself is a mountain but the entire area around the hill is a national park that is an absolute delight at every single turn. The region is full of forests and countryside, but it may well be the monasteries that dot that nature that demand the most attention. Over a dozen houses of tranquility are found here and the mosaics at Krušedol are worth making an effort to find all on their own. When you add them to the great wine, delectable cuisine, and absolute calm of the nature, Fruška Gora is a must-visit.

A word about belgrade.
“I belie ve there are just a few places in the world that reach so far to distant past, and even less that had been subjected to greed and power of many rulers f or thousands of years. Strategic importance, magic and beautiful geographical position of this city have been an inspiration for centuries, often attracting those who wanted to possess it and who waged wars against it.
However, Belgrade remained, grew mature, and gathered wisdom. It met many cultures, and heard dozens of languages.
This ‘ Crossroads of the Worlds ‘ strongly attracted people from different quarters, to settle down for good, and they created the city’s unique cosmopolitan spirit that gladly embraced all those differences.
Today, a charming and open soul of Belgrade constitutes Serbia’s gate to the world. Aware of its inner beauty, and uniqueness, Belgrade gladly offers hospitality to all who come for visit.”

Belgrade is a low-budget New York.
Whoever was fortunate enough to wake up in Belgrade this morning can consider that he has achieved quite enough in life for today. Asking for more would be immodest.
Dusko Radovic
Belgrade is becoming the key destination for travelers who seek for something different in a familiar European landscape.
The Sheffield Star’s Profile magazine
…I had found the most beautiful place of antiquity, the overlarge city of Belgrade…
Despot Stefan Lazarevic
its rivers, its sky and its people. Out of these three primeval elements, the unique spirit of Belgrade is born.
Belgrade is a fantastic city, well connected with the world.
Andrzej Wajda
Belgrade is not in Belgrade, because Belgrade, in fact, is not a city-It’s a metaphor, the way of life and the way of seeing things
I came here because I have never been in this region before... In a very short time I have found two things, both important to me: the food is amazing, and the approach to cinema is far more intellectual than in America.
Jack Nicholson
It usually happens that a traveler goes to a famous place expecting a lot, and leaves disappointed and down. This happens with Athens, Rhine, St Peters Church in Rome. But then, I went to Belgrade not expecting anything- the decorations, the sights, not even the joy or anything interesting - and now I am a victim of its seductive charm, and I have to leave it with utmost pain. This is a new feeling: to fall in love with a city
Herbert Vivian
I am particularly impressed by the bright and warm atmosphere of Belgrade

What people love about belgrade tours.
What an amazing experience!. I enjoyed every minute of it. All tour guides did a fantastic job, they were welcoming, friendly, informative and fun. The sites we saw were just jaw dropping!
I recommend taking this tour to see beautiful Serbia! Discover Serbia is an overview of everything Serbia has to offer. From the beautiful architecture in Belgrade to the historic church’s with fresco paintings from over 500 years ago to the ski slopes by the border of Montenegro. Slobodan was an excellent tour guide and Zorica helped plan the whole trip from A to Z and was also excellent. Overall, the hotel choices and breakfast were also 5 ⭐️! Slobodan gave a really nice overview from all aspects of Serbia. Excellent tour guide. Hyatt Belgrade, Hotel Palisad in Zlatibor with all the meals included were also all around excellent. Zorica helped the planning from Serbia Tour Operator DMC and was very helpful. I highly recommend this tour.

ASCS Frontier Region
ASCS Frontier Region At Belgrade At Big Sky Speedway This Weekend
BILLINGS, Mont. (June 3, 2024) Readying for a return to the track this weekend, the ASCS Frontier Region will head for Gallatin Speedway in Belgrade, Mont. on Friday, May 7 before a return to Big Sky Speedway in Billings, Mont. on Saturday, June 8.
Presented by Lehrkinds Inc., the first event of the season at Gallatin Speedway will see a familiar winner back in action as Kelly Miller looks to keep the momentum from this past weekend’s win at Casper Speedway going. Taking top honors in the tour’s last two visits to Gallatin, Miller split time in Victory Lane last weekend with fellow ASCS Frontier competitor Trever Kirkland, who looks to end a winless streak at the southwestern Montana oval that goes back to 2017.
Friday, June 7, at Gallatin Speedway, opens at 5:30 P.M. with racing at 7:00 P.M. (MDT). Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, and free for kids 12 and under. Gallatin Speedway is located at 2290 Tubb Rd. in Belgrade, Mont. Information on the track is on their Facebook page, or by calling (406) 388-9666. Along with the ASCS Frontier Region, Friday’s bill includes IMCA Modifieds, WISSOTA Super Stocks, and Street Stocks.
A two-day reduced to one by mother nature to kick off the 2024 season, the tour’s first trip to Big Sky Speedway this season went the way of Tyler Thomas. Saturday, June 8 at Big Sky Speedway open at 5:30 P.M. with racing at 7:00 P.M. (MDT). Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for veterans and seniors (65+), and free for kids 60-inches tall or shorter. Big Sky Wingless Sprints, Wissota Midwest Modifieds, and Wissota Super Stocks are also on the lineup.
Big Sky Speedway is located at Hwy. 87 North, Mile Marker 16, just outside Billings, Mont. For more information on the three-eighths-mile oval, log onto https://www.bigskyspeedway.com or call (406) 696-8661.
Both nights are $1,400 to win, and now $400 to start. An increase over previous seasons for the regional drivers.
The 2024 season marks the 33rd season of competition for the American Sprint Car Series. Spearheaded by the American Sprint Car Series National Tour, the ASCS Nation includes Regional Tours encompassing Wing and Non-Wing competition.
A reminder that all teams competing in ASCS competition must have a current DIRTcar Membership. That can be purchased at https://shorturl.at/nuIU2 . The membership is $125 and is good for the 2024 calendar year.
