Daniel Caesar

Since scoring a pair of left-field slow jam hits in duets with H.E.R. (“Best Part”) and Kali Uchis (“Get You”) six years ago, Daniel Caesar has sidestepped the quest for the male R&B throne and has instead opted to focus on further developing his dedicated community of fans — one that has grown to the size of a sold-out Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night (Oct. 17).

The Grammy winner has come a long way since those controversial comments on race relations and the subsequent backlash, but a sobering, apologetic self-reflection and a string of major career moves kept the Caesar train chugging. In the time since “Best Part” emerged as Freudian’s breakout hit, Caesar found Billboard Hot 100 success as a songwriter for fellow Canadians Justin Bieber (“Peaches,” No. 1 — also with Caesar as a featured artist) and Shawn Mendes (“Monster,” No. 8), launched another acclaimed Grammy-nominated studio effort in Case Study 01 , and released collaborations with Common, Brandy, FKA twigs and Omar Apollo.

On Tuesday night, the acclaimed singer-songwriter took over one of the world’s most iconic venues to perform the biggest show of his career thus far. His Superpowers World Tour — a global trek in support of his major label debut album, Never Enough , a stunningly introspective slice of R&B that peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 — is a terrific showcase of musical dexterity.

On the latest stop of his Superpowers Tour, Caesar tore through his lush discography, showcasing impressive vocal endurance and an intriguing yet entrancing approach to staging. Before he hit the stage, however, Grammy-nominated pop&B lothario Omar Apollo sparkled with an energetic set that dripped with sensuality and playfulness. Evoking Michael Jackson one second and Mick Jagger the next, Apollo swaggered through renditions of hits like “Evergreen,” “Tamagotchi” and “3 Boys.” Between a heartfelt tribute to Mexico (“En El Olvido”) and a hilarious streak of frankness — after he flubbed a riff, he quipped, “Oop, my fault!” before seamlessly executing an even harder falsetto riff — Apollo seemed incredibly comfortable in front of the packed arena.

Caesar began his set enclosed in translucent drapery, with a guest appearance from Mustafa the Poet — the pair performed their “Toronto 2014” collaboration — adding to the enigmatic tone of the night. Once he hit “Cyanide,” the drapes fell, revealing a close-up of a humbled Caesar, ready and excited to delight the crowd with a slew of songs off Never Enough , as well as some fan-favorites (“Entropy”) and a cover of Radiohead’s “Creep.” Not one for much banter, Caesar instead channeled his appreciation into a series of moving vocal performances that cast his greatest love songs in the context of the love story between him and his fans.

Here are the five best moments of Daniel Caesar’s Superpowers World Tour at Madison Square Garden:

Caesar in the Shadows

From a cube comprised of flowing, white semi-transparent sheets to a stunning light show for the climax of “Please Do Not Lean,” this show’s production was an absolute highlight. By playing with shadows, the production design explored the push and pull of mystique and celebrity as it relates to Caesar’s public persona. All of this paired with his haunting-yet-alluring vocal tone made for an immersive experience.

"Shot My Baby" Gets Theatrical

Daniel Caesar may not be the first artist to come to mind when presented with the word “theatrical,” but he certainly flaunted those dramatic abilities on Tuesday night. Caesar spent much of his rendition of “Shot My Baby” sprawled out on the floor as if he himself were shot. When his guitarist started shredding near the end of the song, it was as if Caesar’s still body was soaking up all the energy from every seat in the sold-out arena.

Encore (feat. Omar Apollo)

For the encore, Caesar brought the packed arena into a cozy backstage lounge. There, he sat with Omar Apollo as the two listened to the roars of the crowd. At one point, the pair looked liked they would close the night with a duet, but after Apollo briefly mumbled something about not rehearsing, Caesar good-naturedly launched into a solo, acoustic performance of “Streetcar” — a smart and nostalgic choice for an encore that drew one of the night’s most fervent crowd responses.

A "Creep" Enraptures The Garden

Stripping the stage to just him and his acoustic guitar, Caesar tackled Radiohead’s “Creep” with what was probably the night’s peak in terms of vulnerability. The unplugged vibe presented an immediate juxtaposition to the mysterious production design utilized at the top of the show, thus fostering a sense of intimacy that conveyed the gratefulness and awe his spirit radiated throughout the night.

H.E.R. Makes Surprise Appearance

Needing no introduction, Grammy and Oscar winner H.E.R. floated onto the stage to assist Caesar in an exquisite rendition of their hit collab “Best Part.” Considering that this was Caesar’s first performance at the Garden, it was only right that he bring out the duet partner that helped craft the song that made his career explode. With Caesar on acoustic guitar and just the two of them on stage, the two R&B crooners riffed their way through the song, perfectly embodying the depth and warmth that made the studio track such an enduring hit.

Omar Apollo brings his God Said No World Tour to Highmark Skyline Stage on August 25!

Traversing the bounds of genre and language in his songs, Omar Apollo captures the adventurous spirit that this multi-hyphenate moment in pop demands. The singer-songwriter’s fluid musical flair, coupled with his soul-baring balladry, has garnered him a number of industry accolades: including a GRAMMY nomination for Best New Artist and two Latin GRAMMY nominations for Record of the Year and Best Alternative Song (“Te Olvidaste,” with C. Tangana). With the release of Ivory, Apollo’s eclectic 2022 debut, his hit single “Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me at All)” was certified platinum, and became his first showing on the Billboard Hot 100. After selling out his accompanying headline tour, and playing arenas with SZA, Billie Eilish, and Daniel Caesar, Apollo is now prepared to release his highly-anticipated sophomore album, God Said No, June 28th 2024. Born in Hobart, IN to Mexican immigrant parents, Apollo made the most of his outcast status by learning guitar and studying the works of Prince. Released independently and written in Spanglish, his 2018 EP Stereo, followed by 2019’s Friends, scored him a deal with Warner Records in 2019. The deal yielded two more projects: 2020’s Apolonio and 2023’s Live for Me. Blending techniques he learned from R&B, indie rock and Latin music, Apollo continued to flex his versatility in sensational live performances, including on Good Morning America, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, NPR’s Tiny Desk series and Coachella. Omar Apollo is a true visionary, whose one-of-a-kind pop synthesis unites listeners from all walks of life in a shared passion for rhythm and soul.

After making multiple appearances at international festivals and headlining shows, Omar Apollo is coming home for a North American tour in support of his upcoming album, “God Said No.”

The Grammy-nominated singer will perform in amphitheaters across the country including two dates in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Bowl and the Greek Theatre. He’s also set to appear at the Red Rocks and Forest Hills Stadium, starting with a launch date of Aug. 20 in his home state of Indiana. Apollo will be supported by Kevin Abstract, Malcolm Todd and and Rayvn Lenae.

Related stories, virtual production market grows as average stage size contracts, diana ross, eminem, jack white and many more light up detroit’s ‘concert from michigan central’.

The album title is said to be Apollo’s interpretation of  “ lo que sera, sera ” which translates to “whatever will be, will be” or “it is what it is.” In a press release, the album is described as embodying “Omar’s tongue-in-cheek humorous outlook on the suffering that comes from surrendering and accepting whatever is thrown at you by life, a relationship or lover.”

Tickets for the tour will be available starting with Citi and AMEX presales beginning June 11. An artist presale will begin June 12, starting at 10am local time. Additional pre-sales will run throughout the week ahead of the general on-sale on June 14.

The new single from apollo’s upcoming album ivory , out on april 8..

daniel caesar omar apollo tour

Omar Apollo emerged out of Indiana in 2017 as a cult favorite singer-songwriter making genre-disregarding pop for a post- Frank Ocean landscape. 2020 saw the release of his "debut project" Apolonio , and on April 8 of this year he'll share IVORY , which is billed as his "debut album." Huge difference, obviously. Today he shares "Invincible," the sought-after collaboration with the Grammy-winning Toronto R&B songwriter Daniel Caesar . Omar Apollo Drops The Daniel Caesar Collab ‘Invincible’ And Announces A New Album, ‘Ivory’

Derrick Rossignol

After finding initial success on SoundCloud, Omar Apollo dropped a pair of EPs before releasing his first full-length project, Apolonio , in 2020, which earned the young artist much acclaim. Now, a new album, Ivory , is on the way. Alongside this news, Apollo dropped a new single, the Daniel Caesar collaboration “Invincible,” a lush tune that puts the vocal chops of both artists front and center.

Apollo is also embarking on the “Desvelado” tour this spring, which has a run of North American shows from April to May before a handful of overseas appearances in June. Deb Never supports on a majority of those shows.

Omar Apollo Announces Fall 2022 North American 'Prototype' Tour Dates

General onsale is beginning Friday, August 12th at 10am local time.

pixeltracker

Following the release of his highly-anticipated debut album IVORY earlier this year and his wildly successful Desvelado Tour, Omar Apollo announces his upcoming fall 2022 Prototype Tour dates.

LATEST NEWS

Kicking off in October, the 22-date tour will see stops at the illustrious Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, Brooklyn's Kings Theatre and the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, among others. Omar has partnered with PLUS1 so that $1 from every ticket goes to support MusiCares' work to provide a safety net of critical health and welfare services to the music community.

In celebration of the tour, he also shares a brand new single in "Highlight," arriving on the heels of his recent nomination for Push Performance of the Year at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards in addition to being featured on Barack Obama's Summer 2022 playlist.

Co-produced by Omar Apollo and Grammy-winning producer Manuel Lara (Bad Bunny, Kali Uchis, Rauw Alejandro), "Highlight" and the previously released single "Archetype" both appear on the deluxe edition of his debut, IVORY (Marfil), out on August 12th via Warner Records with 5 new additional songs.

On "Highlight," Omar's vocal performance shines over mellow production as he glides seamlessly between English and Spanish verses.

Artist presales for the upcoming tour will begin on Wednesday, August 10th at 10am local time, running through Thursday, August 11th at 10pm local time with general onsale beginning Friday, August 12th at 10am local time.

Released to widespread acclaim, IVORY takes Omar's songwriting to the next level - crossing genre lines as well as language barriers as it showcases even greater musical diversity from the budding superstar.

The album features the Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo produced single "Tamagotchi," as well as previously released singles "Killing Me," which debuted with a television performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, "Invincible" featuring Daniel Caesar, the Teo Halm-produced single "Bad Life" with Kali Uchis and "Go Away," produced by Omar himself alongside Carter Lang and Chromeo.

Listen to "Highlight" and pre-save IVORY (Marfil) above, see full album details and tour routing below, and stay tuned for more from Omar coming soon.

Omar Apollo and Daniel Caesar Reminisce About a Love that Once Was in Beautifully Queer ‘Invincible’ Video

  • By Tomás Mier

Omar Apollo and Daniel Caesar explore the complexities of love, sexuality, and longing in the beautifully trippy video for “Invincible,” which dropped Wednesday.

The clip opens with the angelic vocals of Daniel Caesar singing, “If I were to go, tell me would you notice me” as Apollo plays an electric guitar in an abandoned creek. The Stillz-directed video then follows what appears to be Apollo and Caesar as children playing with a toy ambulance and SUV. Their game comes to life as Apollo rides in a black vehicle as Ceasar is transported in an ambulance — not to a hospital, but a family party where he’s placed on a dinner table and a young boy blows out the candles of his birthday cake on top of Ceasar’s body.

“ 64 hours since my baby spoke to me/ He kissed me now I love his dopamine,” sings Apollo, before an MRI gives a psychedelic view into Apollo’s mind as he adds a rap verse. The video then breaks into a seemingly imaginative love story as a shirtless male couple — wearing puppet heads made by Costa Rican visual artist Andrés Gudiño — hold hands, affectionately play flight, and intimately caress each other’s bodies in an empty, dirt terrain. “ I had to call you back to tell you that (call me back)/ You could have spared my feelings,” Apollo sings, backed by Caesar. “ I’m not invincible (I’m not invincible)/I’m not invincible.”

The Gudiño-made masks are the artist’s depiction of the taboo of sexuality and eroticism. “Accepting my own sexuality or wanting to experiment with my sexuality was always very sinister, very hidden,” Gudiño told Tico Times about his art in 2017. “Everyone needs pleasure. I was very drawn to how those topics are handled and how a context can influence oneself and determine you as a person.”

The release of “Invincible” comes a day after Apollo announced that he’ll release his debut album Ivory on April 8, featuring previously released singles “Bad Life” with Kali Uchis and “Go Away.” Apollo is set to go on his Desvelado Tour in April and May. He’ll also perform at Coachella.
