The city has population around 220,000 and attracts bouth Australian and international tourists with its unique environment, rich heritage, numerous galleries and museums, festive events and festivals. Among the most popular is the annual "Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race". The race starts in Sydney NSW (on Boxing Day / the day after Christmas Day) and finishes in Port Hobart. The distance is approx 1170 km (730 mi). The yacht race is sponsored by Tasmania's Royal Yacht Club and is considered one of the world's most difficult ones.

The Port's cruising season starts in October and ends in April.

In Hobart is homeported the French icebreaker ship L'Astrolabe (2017-built). The ship operates on roundtrips to Antarctica, serving the Dumont d'Urville Station (France) located in Adelie Land.

Hobart cruise terminal

Port Hobart's cruise ship terminal is located at Macquarie Wharf, with 3 dedicated berths. The passenger terminal has a waterfront location in downtown Hobart (Hunter Street), on the eastern docks. Most of the city's main sights are within easy walking distance.

The cruise port's closest to the city center berth is "Pier 1". The most distant berth is "Pier 3". The terminal's area is historically known as "Constitution Docks". Today, the area is well developed and has many shops selling gifts, souvenirs, hand-made crafts and arts, clothing, also several food and beverage/F&B venues.

The cruise terminal's facilities were last renovated in 2013. The refurbishment project's budget was AUD 7 million. The new "Macquarie Wharf 2" terminal building was inaugurated in October 2013. The first ship call was by the Sea Princess ship.

  • The new Terminal 2 offers as amenities and services waiting hall, visitor info services, retail shops (including locally-made crafts, gifts, duty-free jewelry), currency exchange.
  • The Hobart port's re-development project transformed the under-utilized wharf into a modern cargo facility plus a modern cruise passenger terminal. The project was based on extensive consultations with port customers, cruise companies and Australia's Antarctic logistics community.
  • The project included the installation of new internal walls, creating 3 sections for cruise terminal, Antarctic cargo handling areas, offices. New entry ramp was constructed. The old asbestos roof was removed and replaced with a new. A new road network manages better the cruise passenger traffic and includes 15 new bus bays.
  • Among the project's innovations were the use of natural light and ventilation in the terminal building,

The cruise ship terminal's waterfront location and facility size allow it to be used for various public events on non-ship days.

Sightseeing:

The city of Hobart is unique offering all the amenities of a thriving city only minutes from a wide variety of natural beauties. Situated on the west bank of the Derwent River the city in many ways retains the flavor of a small town with a leisurely pace and a population of 160 000. One of the most beautiful capitals in the world, Hobart is set under the towering peak of Mount Wellington and has a deep water port rivaling Sydney harbor.

Founded in1804 by Colonel David Collins, Hobart is the second oldest city in Australia. It grew out of the first settlement on the island at Risdon Cove, eight kilometers up river, which was founded in 1803 and abandoned five months later for the present site of Hobart. Ridson Cove remains today much as it was 190 years ago and is an unique tourist attraction.

There are many fine examples of Georgian and Victorian architecture, including, Salamanca Place which has a terrace of warehouses dating back to the whaling days of the 1830's. Nearby Battery Point, the original sea mens quarters of the city and Maquarie and Davey Street offer more than 60 buildings classified by the National Trust.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Hobart is very walkable. The tourist information has a free booklet of walks in Hobart and up Mt Wellington. travelers with physical disabilities should check out the useful Hobart CBD Mobility Map from the visitor information center. At the center you can book any number of tours including trips around Hobart, up to mount Wellington and other locations.

Red Decker : Your choice of 20 stops featuring Hobart's Best Sights and attractions. Hop on Hop off or stay on and do the 90 minute City Loop Tour or do both. Informative Commentary.

Nearby Places:

Port Arthur . This former penal colony is Tasmania's top attraction. Located 60 miles southeast of Hobart.

Wellington Park : Metro buses run a service to Fern Tree, leaving from Franklin Square in the center of Hobart. A number of tour companies operate tours up the Mountain.

Shopping and Food

The compact and navigable city center has a grid of one-way streets encircling the Elizabeth St Mall. The visitor information center, banks and the main post office are on Elizabeth St, while the main shopping area is west from the Mall.

There is a market on the lawns by the waterfront every Saturday 8:30 to 3pm.

Australian Dollar

Currency Converter

Communication:

The Service Tasmania & Parks and Wildlife office on Macquarie St. has free internet. There are numerous internet 'cafes' in the city center. Many coffee shops offer free wireless internet with a purchase.

Opening Hours and Holidays:

Shops and services are generally open Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm. Sundays until 4PM.

In remote country areas, roadhouses provide all the essential services for the traveler and, on the major highways, are generally open 24 hours a day. In tourist areas, even ones well off the beaten track, tourist offices are often open every day or at least through the week plus weekend mornings; urban information centers are more likely to conform to normal shopping hours.

Tourist attractions such as museums, galleries and attended historic monuments, are often open daily, though those in rural communities may have erratic opening hours.

8 reasons cruises may be a better value for a 7-day vacation than land-based hotel stays

Cruising for a vacation getaway this summer or fall consider these insights.

Virtuoso Vice President of Global Public Relations Misty Belles discusses 2024 summer travel trends, the demographic shift to the cruise industry and Global Travel Adviser Day.

Cooler-climate countries see spike in demand for summer travel

Virtuoso Vice President of Global Public Relations Misty Belles discusses 2024 summer travel trends, the demographic shift to the cruise industry and Global Travel Adviser Day.

Millions of Americans are getting ready to travel this summer , with recent research from the MMGY Travel Intelligence's Portrait of American Travelers study revealing that 76% of Americans plan to take a trip this year.

With this travel surge, savvy consumers are always striving to reap value from vacation dollars.

But does a cruise offer more vacation value than a land-based hotel stay?

CRUISE LINE OFFERS RETIREES CONCERNED ABOUT INFLATION ‘A NEW WAY OF LIFE'

FOX Business consulted with four different travel professionals to find out how and if consumers can stretch their vacation dollars on a cruise vs. a hotel stay.

Here's a deep dive into the issue — with eight intriguing reasons why cruises may win out in the end.

1. Cruise amenities are usually plentiful

Cruise loyalists sail over and over again because of the "unpack once" concept — and the value a cruise can present.

Not only can you visit several ports during one sailing, there are ample food options , activities and entertainment that your cruise fare covers.

Also, there are often booking incentives with onboard credits, free drink packages , free Wi-Fi and military discounts on some cruise lines. For consumers who are driven by price, it’s worthwhile to research cruise options this summer.

"When we look at pricing for mid-summer travel season in the Caribbean — a seven-night cruise in July, for example — we're seeing an average starting fare of $1,160 per person, or $165 per night, per person," said Colleen McDaniel, spokesperson with Cruise Critic, who is based in Denver.

"It's an extremely competitive price compared with similar options on land."

"And when you take into account the amenities included in that fare — food, entertainment and your room — it's an extremely competitive price compared with similar options on land."

HOT HONEYMOON DESTINATIONS: BORA BORA, BALI AND MORE TROPICAL, INTERNATIONAL SPOTS FOR COUPLES

When you're considering apples-to-apples in terms of quality, you'd be hard-pressed to find a comparable hotel option for less, according to McDaniel.

"At sea, you're experiencing not simply a room and a pool, but you've got an array of bars and restaurants , Broadway-caliber entertainment, waterparks and more," she said.

2. A cruise's value can be stretched

Experts say travelers can make a cruise an even greater value than a land-based hotel stay.

"One perk of cruising is that it allows many American travelers to, in effect, 'drive' to their cruise destination — whether that's the Caribbean , Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada/New England or Mexico, as homeports can be found along the East and West Coasts, and along with the Gulf Coast. So for many, it means there is an option to drive rather than fly," said McDaniel.

Without the need to book a flight or numerous flights in some cases, you can save thousands of dollars if you were flying across the U.S. or to an island in the Carribean.

Also in the win column for cruises: There’s the reduction of travel hassles.

"One could also argue that avoiding the airport — crowds, delays, cancellations, added fees — has even more value in the form of mental wellness," McDaniel said.

3. There is more choice in lodging picks

Unlike hotels, part of the cruise booking process also includes booking your exact cabin — and the room choices can be extensive.

10 LOCATIONS AROUND THE WORLD THAT OFFER BREATHTAKING SUNSETS

"So, rather than choose between a handful of room types at a hotel, most of which come at relatively the same price, you're able to select the cabin that best fits both your needs and your budget," said McDaniel.

4. Cruise lines cater to travelers just as hotels do

Cruise lines cater to varying travelers.

"Yes, there is definitely a tiered model of cruise pricing across the industry that's very similar to the hotel brands and industry," McDaniel said.

"There are mainstream lines that are more budget-friendly, and other mainstream lines that are a bit more elevated in experience and price."

5. A cruise's tab is more predictable

When booking a cruise, you’ll generally face fewer separate costs, said Sally French, travel expert at NerdWallet in San Francisco.

"Cruise fare tends to include meals, entertainment and lodging all in one," she said.

CRUISES ARE SAILING ‘VERY HEALTHY’ CONSUMER WATERS: HARRY SOMMERS

However, she noted, "cruisers may see extra costs — particularly if they book add-ons like shore excursions, have a meal at one of the ship’s fancier restaurants, or take part in cruise offerings that necessitate an additional fees like a spa treatment."

"Cruise fare tends to include meals, entertainment and lodging all in one."

Booking a hotel room, by contrast, typically means you’re still on the hook for filling your day and your belly, French said.

"While it’s not uncommon to find hotels that offer free breakfast and activities, travelers should typically budget for ongoing costs throughout the trip, such as dining out, entertainment and transportation between those spots," she said.

6. Cruises can be all-inclusive

It’s an interesting comparison when booking upscale travel .

"Luxury cruise lines tend to be more truly all-inclusive," French said.

In contrast, budget cruise lines tend to charge more for extras.

For example, many affordable cruise lines only serve water, tea and coffee for free, but charge extra for soda, juice and alcohol.

That said, "it’s rare to find a luxury hotel brand that offers free breakfast, except in unique circumstances such as [consumers'] elite status," said French.

And, she said that hotels most likely to serve free breakfast tend to be the low-to-mid tier brands associated with major hotel chains.

"Travelers [have] an opportunity to relax and focus on the experience and their time together rather than [the] additional costs they’ll need to consider."

Kim Guimaraes, vice president of national accounts with Crystal and Abercrombie & Kent, who is based in Miami, told FOX Business that in most cases, travelers who choose to vacation at a traditional five-star hotel can expect to pay additional costs for any on-site activities selected, in addition to food and beverage.

BEST EUROPEAN VACATION SPOTS FOR AVID RUNNERS TO VISIT ON 2024 SUMMER TRIPS, HOKA SAYS

"On upscale cruises, not only are guests receiving white-glove service around the clock, but they are also getting premium dining experiences, top-shelf spirits and wines , award-winning entertainment and innovative guest programming included in their cost," said Guimaraes.

"This provides travelers an opportunity to relax and focus on the experience and their time together rather than what additional costs they’ll need to consider."

7. Vacation transportation costs can be lower

A cruise takes travelers to multiple destinations, in many cases.

"If you were to price out traveling to those ports, with train or air and hotel separately, it would add up to the same or more than using a cruise as your mode of transportation," said Kelly Connor, travel adviser with AAA Club Alliance in Marlton, New Jersey.

"Figure in travel time and airport arrival and wait times — and a cruise is valuable in handling the travel for you, plus offering a fabulous sea view."

GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE

For instance, a Mediterranean cruise stopping in Capri, Mykonos and Istanbul and ending in Athens, said Connor, is much more affordable than trying to hop around to those places in a week on your own.

"Plus, you have your choice of a wide variety of onboard experiences and entertainment at night and on cruising days — right there in walkable distance," Connor added.

"The convenience is amazing and you don’t have to take a taxi to get back to your room."

8. Cruising can be more streamlined

Don’t overlook the value of trip planning, said French with NerdWallet.

"With a cruise, there’s very little thinking involved once you’re onboard, and generally, you can eat when you want and partake in any of the available activities at your leisure," she said.

With a hotel stay, visitors are generally on their own in terms of planning their days.

Plus, if your land-based vacation involves nights in multiple cities, you’ll have to deal with checking in and out of multiple hotels and handling your luggage accordingly.

Hobart Cruises Port Guide

A Tasmania cruise takes you to the gorgeous island state of Australia, located southeast of the mainland. With an interesting history as an old penal colony, and its massive national park reserves, Tasmania sometimes seems like another world. However, cool Hobart will bring you back to the present day with its cutting edge cuisine, world-class museums and shopping, and wine tasting rooms. Visitors on a cruise to Australia will have a blast exploring the city and its surrounding nature.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to hobart, mount wellington lookout.

For one of the best – if not the best – views when you cruise to Tasmania, you’ll want to leave the city center of Hobart behind and drive to the top of Mount Wellington, a towering peak on the southeast side of the island. Mount Wellington stretches 4,170 feet into the air and has a lookout point at the top that boasts views of the city of Hobart below and the adjacent Bay of Hobart.

You don’t want to miss seeing the wildlife in Tasmania, particularly the Tasmanian devils, which are endemic to the island. Two excellent places to see them during Hobart cruises are at the Unzoo in Taranna near Port Arthur and the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in nearby Brighton. Other wildlife you can see in Tasmania include kangaroos, koala bears, and penguins.

Royal Tasmanian Botanical Garden

If you love flowers and gardens, or simply enjoy a leisurely walk in a beautiful setting, you’ll love visiting the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens during your Tasmania cruise. The gardens are located just over a mile from the city center of Hobart and date back to 1818. The features of the garden include historical aspects as well as botanical flora.

Learn More About Hobart Shore Excursions

Top things to do in hobart, mona museum and river ferry.

The MONA museum is a huge attraction for those on Hobart cruises, both literally and figuratively. MONA stands for the Museum of Old and New Art and is the largest privately funded museum in Australia. It has a contemporary vibe and houses unique pieces of artwork as well as engaging art exhibits. Outside of art, the museum is set in a picturesque location on the edge of the Derwent River. Located north of Hobart in Berriedale, taking a 25-minute river ferry from Brook Street Pier to MONA is a memorable way to get there.

Port Arthur Tour

One of the most interesting ways to learn about the penal colony past of Tasmania during Hobart cruises is to actually visit the former prison, Port Arthur, that housed the convicts. Take a tour with a guide to learn about what it was like to be prisoner or prison guard there over a century ago.

Wine Tasting

The countryside you’ll see on a Tasmania cruise includes beautiful vineyards and lovely wineries offering tastings. The wine country of Tasmania is especially known for its sparkling wines. The Riesling and Pinot Noir coming out of the wineries of Tasmania are also highly lauded.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Hobart Cruise Port

Don’t miss out on the varied and fresh cuisine in Tasmania. Hobart is home to a plethora of restaurants offering just about every type of cuisine. The restaurant scene is both edgy and traditional, and you’ll find the restaurateurs in Hobart serve up their food in settings like nothing you’ve experienced before. Look for seasonal menus featuring locally grown food and freshly caught seafood.

Culture & History of the Hobart Cruise Port

Hobart is the second-oldest city in Australia, settled just 16 years after Sydney. It’s situated on Tasmania, an island state of Australia located southwest of the mainland and surrounded by the deep blue Pacific Ocean. Once a timber station and previously a penal colony, today Tasmania is an island rich in culture and nature, and Hobart is at the heart of it all.

Hobart Port Facilities & Location

The cruise terminal for Hobart cruise ships is at Macquarie Wharf. All ship berths at Macquarie Wharf are within walking distance to downtown Hobart. Right outside the Tasmania cruise terminal, you’ll find shops selling crafts, souvenirs, and food.

Transportation in Hobart

The bus system in Hobart goes all around the city and beyond to the rest of the Tasmania. Most bus routes depart from Franklin Square or Elizabeth Street between Macquarie Street and Collins Street. In addition, you can take the Red Decker bus around, which is a hop-on, hop-off bus that stops at many of Hobart’s main attractions.

Shopping Near the Hobart Cruise Port

Hobart has many places to shop, including several shopping complexes that offer a lot of variety in one destination. The Cat and Fiddle Shopping Arcade offers fashion boutiques, specialty stores, and an animated clock that you can’t miss seeing at the top of every hour. Another mall worth visiting is Elizabeth Street Mall, which has many high street brands as well as national chain stores. For fashion outlets, head to Eastlands Centre in the Rosny Park area of Hobart, or Glenorchy Central Shopping Centre in the Glenorchy suburb of Hobart.

If you cruise to Hobart on a Saturday, you don’t want to miss spending some time at Salamanca Market. The market features over 250 stalls selling souvenirs, food items, jewelry, arts and crafts, and much more. Haggling is welcome. If you aren’t there on Saturday, but instead cruise to Hobart on a Sunday, you can find more bargains at the Northgate Flea Market, which operates every Sunday in the car park of Northgate Shopping Centre.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Tipping isn’t obligatory, but it is appreciated, and a standard tip for good service while dining out in Hobart is 10% of your total bill. Generally, you won’t find a service charge already added to bills. Most businesses accept credit cards here. If cash is needed, the accepted currency in Tasmania is the Australian Dollar.

I've traveled on all 5 Disney cruise ships. I have 2 clear favorites, and there's only one I'm not in a hurry to book again.

  • My family and I have been on nine Disney cruises and all five ships.
  • We love the fleet's two smallest ships, Disney Wonder and Disney Magic.
  • Although we had a great experience on board Disney Wish , it was my least favorite ship to travel on.

I've been on nine Disney cruises with my husband and two teenage sons. We've sailed on other cruise lines including Carnival, Celebrity, MSC, and Royal Caribbean , but Disney Cruise Line is always our top pick.

Stellar service, subtle theming, top-notch kids' and teen programs, and a dreamy private island in the Bahamas are some of the reasons we keep returning.

So far, we've been on all five Disney Cruise Line ships — Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish. We'll soon have more ships to explore, with Disney Treasure planning to set sail in December and Disney Destiny set to embark on its maiden voyage in 2025 .

Out of the five ships we've been on, two stand out as favorites, and there's only one I'm not in a hurry to travel on again.

My favorite ships are Disney Wonder and Disney Magic

Disney Wonder and Disney Magic are my favorite ships in the Disney Cruise Line.

They have nearly identical deck layouts and are the fleet's two smallest ships. Some may see this as a negative, but I prefer the smaller, more intimate size and the ease of getting around the ships.

Disney Wonder also has my favorite Disney Cruise Line restaurant, Tiana's Place. It offers a delicious, Cajun-inspired menu and a fun "The Princess and the Frog" theme. There's even a lively floor show with jazz music.

I love Disney Magic , too, but I thought it was more dated and in need of an update than Disney Wonder.

I also didn't love the Magic's Rapunzel-themed restaurant nearly as much as I love Tiana's Place.

The food at Rapunzel's Royal Table was just so-so, but the entertainment and theming more than made up for it. The in-person appearance of Rapunzel and Flynn, capped by a lantern processional to the tune of "I See the Light," was glorious.

Although Disney Wish was great, it was my least favorite ship to travel on

Although I had a great experience on board Disney Wish, it was my least favorite ship to travel on.

The Wish is unarguably beautiful — everything is sparkling new, and the atrium is decked out with a life-size Cinderella sculpture — but I thought the layout was a little clunky.

I may have felt this way because many of Disney's ships are laid out very similarly, and after nine cruises, we're pros at finding our way around.

Disney Wonder and Disney Magic have nearly identical deck layouts, as do Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Disney Wish, however, is laid out much differently.

Unlike the other Disney cruise ships we've been on, Disney Wish doesn't have a specific area for adults-only lounges.

Instead, the adults-only bars and lounges, which are off-limits to kids after 7 p.m., are scattered throughout the ship. This means the Wish doesn't have that true kid-free haven that the other ships have.

I also found that many parts of the ship, from the dining rooms to the pools, felt crowded

For all that criticism, my family and I enjoyed sailing on Disney Wish . But now that we've crossed it off our list, we won't be in any hurry to jump on board again unless the route is one we can't pass up.

Correction: June 7, 2024 — An earlier version of this story mislabeled a photo of Disney Wish as Disney Wonder.
