Covid cost the travel and tourism sector an estimated $3.3 trillion. 3 That’s a lot of suppressed demand that could be waiting to return when consumers feel safe.

Cooped up and denied agency, many people have missed their regular trips and are ready to return to a travel-rich lifestyle. A travel ETF could capture the growth this travel itch represents.

cruise line index

The cruise line industry is part of the broader travel and tourism industry, focused primarily on providing sea-based vacation experiences. Companies in the industry own and operate cruise ships in various destinations worldwide, offering a variety of itineraries and themed cruises. They also may provide other travel and vacation services. The big cruise line companies include Carnival Corp. and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

The cruise line industry has been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, related travel restrictions, and other social-distancing measures. Many cruise operators ceased ship operations for many months throughout the early portion of the pandemic. Now many lines have resumed the majority of their cruise operations and bookings have soared compared to 2019, before the pandemic. However, additional issues hamper the industry: cruise companies have struggled to hire back employees, which has led to cancellations and reduced on-board amenities.

All pure-play cruise line stocks available to U.S. investors are underperforming the broader market, having provided total returns below the -12.1% total return of the Russell 1000 Index over the past 12 months. There is no specific benchmark index for the cruise industry. The market performance number above and all statistics in the tables below are as of Oct. 4, 2022. Below, we look at the top three cruise line stocks with the best value, fastest growth, and best performance.

There are just four pure-play cruise line companies easily available to U.S. investors, but we look at them in our usual style. Because the entire industry has suffered losses in recent quarters, the value section below will be based on price-to-sales ratio rather than the usual price-to-earnings ratio (P/E Ratio) . Also, the revenue growth rates in the growth section further below are abnormally high because revenue in the most recent quarter is being compared to extremely low baseline levels in the year-ago quarter as a result of COVID-19 restrictions. Even relatively small absolute value changes in revenue have resulted in enormous percentage changes.

These are the cruise line stocks with the lowest 12-month trailing price-to-sales (P/S) ratio . For companies in early stages of development or industries suffering from major shocks, this can be substituted as a rough measure of a business's value. A business with higher sales could eventually produce more profit when it achieves (or returns to) profitability. The price-to-sales ratio shows how much you're paying for the stock for each dollar of sales generated.

  • Carnival Corp.:  Carnival operates the world’s largest fleet of cruise ships. The company also owns travel-related properties such as hotels and vacation destinations. Carnival reported Q2 2022 financial results on Sept. 30. Its net loss narrowed sharply to $770 million from $2.8 billion in the prior year quarter as total revenue rose nearly eight-fold year-over-year ( YOY ). The company said it was benefiting from soaring bookings, with 95% of Carnival's capacity serving guests as of Sept. 30. The company said it expects eight of its nine cruise brands to have their full fleet serving guests by the end of the year.
  • Lindblad Expeditions Holdings Inc.: Lindblad Expeditions owns and operates cruise ships and provides expedition cruising and travel services. The company offers both sea-based and land-based expeditions. Lindblad Expeditions released financial results for Q2 2022 on Aug. 2. Its net loss narrowed to $28.6 million compared to $35.7 million in Q2 2021. Total revenue surged nearly six-fold as the company ramped up service globally on all ten of its owned cruise ships.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.: Norwegian Cruise Line operates a fleet of passenger cruise ships. In addition, the company offers itineraries and theme cruises. On Aug. 9, Norwegian Cruise Line released its Q2 2022 financial report. Its net loss shrank to $509.3 million from $717.8 million in the prior year quarter as revenue rose dramatically to $1.2 billion from $4.4 million in Q2 2021.

These are the cruise line stocks with the highest  year-over-year (YOY)  sales growth for the most recent quarter. Rising sales can help investors to identify companies that are able to grow revenue organically or through other means and to find growing companies that have not yet reached profitability. In addition, accounting factors that may not reflect the overall strength of the business can significantly influence  earnings per share (EPS) . However, sales growth can also prove potentially misleading about the strength of a business because growing sales on money-losing businesses can be harmful if the company has no plan to reach profitability.

  • Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.: See above for company description.
  • Royal Caribbean Group:  Royal Caribbean Group, formerly known as Royal Caribbean Cruises, operates a fleet of vessels in the cruise vacation industry. On Aug. 30, Royal Caribbean announced that it will offer high-speed internet to passengers throughout its entire cruise fleet through SpaceX's Starlink, a high-speed internet service. The installation is scheduled to be completed by the end of Q1 2023 and is expected to sharply improve historically poor internet service while cruise vessels are at sea.
  • Carnival Corp.:  See above for company description.

These are the cruise line stocks that had the smallest declines in total return over the past 12 months out of the companies we looked at.

  • Lindblad Expeditions Holdings Inc.: See above for company description.
  • Royal Caribbean Group.: See above for company description.

Shareholder Perks: A little-known benefit of holding cruise line stocks is that they offer shareholder perks. For instance, investors who hold at least 100 Carnival shares are entitled to a $250 onboard credit for cruises that are 14 days or longer, a $100 credit for cruises between 7 and 13 days, and a $50 credit for sailings of six days or less. Similarly, both Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line offer comparable shareholder benefits. To claim, investors need to provide their details and proof of ownership, such as a shareholder proxy card or a copy of a current brokerage statement.

Pent-Up Demand: Cruise line companies have seen a bounce back in demand as customers book cruises they had put on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic. This positions operators in the sector to boost profits in upcoming quarters since most have their fleets back at total capacity and removed COVID vaccination requirements. Carnival reported in June that its forward bookings were at the higher end of historical ranges, while Royal Caribbean said in July that 2023 bookings in all quarters are currently booked within historical ranges at record pricing. Moreover, Royal Caribbean expects to return to profitability in the third quarter of 2022. As a result, cruise line stock prices may be buoyed in the months ahead as investors bake in improving earnings.

High Debt Load: Cruise line companies racked up substantial debt over the past two years as they attempted to stay afloat during the pandemic. Carnival carried total debt of $36.39 billion at the end of the second quarter—more than a three-fold increase from $11.5 billion in 2019. Royal Caribbean's debt ballooned from $11.73 billion to $23.85 billion over the same period, while Norwegian Cruise Line's debt grew from $6.8 billion to $13.24 billion. With inflation leading to higher fuel costs and rising interest rates , these elevated debt levels will become increasingly difficult to service, increasing the risk of share price dilution through further capital raisings .

Future Pandemics: Cruise Line stocks sank during the pandemic, with the sector facing multiple challenges from bad publicity, no-sail orders, and a sluggish recovery. In the early stages of the health crisis, reports of major outbreaks spreading onboard put downward pressure on the group. Selling accelerated as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued and extended no-sail orders. Although forward bookings have bounced back in 2022, sales sit significantly below pre-pandemic levels. For example, both Carnival and Royal Caribbean reported respective revenue for the June quarter that came in at 42% and 22% below the corresponding period in 2019. These challenges remind investors that future pandemics remain a risk for cruise line stocks.

These ETFs Give Excellent Exposure to the Cruise Line Industry

Cruise lines have been through the ringer, but investing in down stocks could mean heightened return upon recovery.

Rachel Curry - Author

Dec. 23 2020, Updated 5:09 a.m. ET

Cruise Ship

The pandemic has hit the market hard, but the cruise industry has taken a particularly fervent beating. Cruise line stocks have been volatile over the course of 2020, but investing in individual stocks does bring more risk than a diversified fund.

However, investors can use ETFS that invest in cruise lines to boost capital into the industry without posing enormous risk. As Norwegian Cruise, Carnival Corporation, and Royal Caribbean continue to await their first post-pandemic voyage, baskets of stocks are working together to keep the sector afloat in the market.

Are there any cruise line ETFs?

There aren't any ETFs that are specific to cruise lines only, but there are plenty of ETFs that include major cruise companies in the mix.

In a basket of securities like an ETF, this is a good thing for a struggling industry as well as the investors who choose to put their capital at risk. After all, ETFs are more tax-efficient and they offer increased security when it comes to returns.

Cruise lines are in the 3X ETF

$HIBL — Jonah Lupton 🇺🇸 (@JonahLupton) November 9, 2020

The Direxion Daily S&P 500 High Beta Bull 3X Shares goes by "HIBL" on the NYSE ARCA. It's only been around since Nov. 2019, but this fund aims to outperform the S&P 500 High Beta index. More than 80 percent of the 3X ETF goes toward financial instrument assets, but the remainder is a diverse array.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. accounts for 0.24 percent of the 3X ETF. That actually puts Norwegian in fifth place as far as total net assets. They're beat only by Discover Financial Services, Tapestry Inc., Dreyfus Government Cash Management, and Financial Square Treasury Instruments (the last two have the highest holdings at 25.52 percent and 29.52 percent, respectively).

$VCR on my watchlist. Funding that bucket soon. — Rio♻️ (@tmc7o7) December 15, 2020

The main Vanguard ETF containing noteworthy cruise line securities is the Vanguard Consumer Discretionary ETF ("VCR"). VCR is basically the ETF version of VCDAX, Vanguard's discretionary index fund. The ETF has an 18.46 percent five-year return, but its expense ratio is rather low at 0.1 percent.

Hotels, resorts, and cruise lines account for three percent of the ETF as of Nov. 30.

Norwegian Cruise Line ETFs are plentiful

Norwegian Cruise Line has found its way into at least 85 ETF baskets. Norwegian has the most exposure in the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight Consumer Discretionary ETF (or "RCD" on the ARCA), where it holds 2.05 percent.

Other options include the iShares Morningstar Small Cap Value ETF (or "JKL" on the same exchange) and the Direxion Daily S&P 500 High Beta Bull 3X Shares.

There's no shortage of ETFs with Carnival Cruise Line holdings, either

*Ticker wrong. It’s $SFYF . — Eric Balchunas (@EricBalchunas) July 1, 2020

Carnival Cruise Line has 110 ETF holdings. The stock's most prominent allocation can be found in the SoFi 50 ETF, or "SFYF" on the ARCA. There, it holds about 1.98 percent.

Other ETFs include the iShares Evolved U.S. Media and Entertainment ETF ("IEME" on the BATS Exchange) and the Vanguard Small Cap Value Index Fund ETF ("VBR" on the ARCA).

Cruise Stocks To Sail Smoothly Into 2025: Analyst Sees 'Zero Signs Of Softening'

Zinger key points.

  • Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Norwegian are leveraging strong booking trends and unique strategies to drive post-pandemic recovery.
  • Inflationary pressures and rising costs pose challenges, but cruise stocks are well-positioned for long-term market share gains.

cruise line index

Cruise stocks are cruising in the fast lane, and according to analysts, the seas ahead look crystal clear. Royal Caribbean Group RCL , Carnival Corp CCL , and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd NCLH are poised for a strong setup in 2025, backed by rising demand and pricing power, according to JPMorgan analyst Matthew R. Boss .

‘Zero Signs’ Of Demand Softening For Cruise Lines

"Zero signs of softening in any lead indicator," said Boss after attending the Endless Summer Forum in Miami. That includes everything from booking curves to onboard spending – with Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line’s management confirming the industry's sturdy footing.

With nearly half of 2025's capacity already booked, cruises are setting sail much earlier than usual, extending bookings as far as 2027.

Royal Caribbean ‘In A Very Good Spot’

RCL is leading the charge. CFO Naftali Holtz stated, “We're in a very good spot,” citing how 70% of passengers make pre-cruise purchases, which translates to a significant onboard spending boost. The company is banking on long-term drivers, including the arrival of new ships like “Utopia of the Seas” and “Star of the Seas” to fuel further growth.

Carnival Prepares For Q3 Earnings

Meanwhile, Carnival is ready to ride the wave, with its third quarter earnings expected to get a lift from the continued surge in demand, particularly in Europe and Alaska.

The company remains optimistic about maintaining its pricing power, which remains about 25% lower than land-based alternatives – a strong selling point for thrifty travelers.

Norwegian’s Management Is ‘Very Confident’

Norwegian Cruise Line remains neutral in JPMorgan’s outlook but sees clear skies ahead. Management expressed "very confident" expectations of hitting a $300 million cost savings target, driven by initiatives such as optimizing fuel use and streamlining menus—all while keeping passengers satisfied.

As Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings navigate the post-pandemic recovery, each is showing unique strengths.

Royal Caribbean’s focus on new ship launches and immersive experiences, Carnival's strong booking trends and cost-efficiency strategies, and Norwegian's premium offerings suggest that all three are well-positioned to benefit from increasing consumer demand. The cruise industry, with its multi-generational appeal and rising demand, seems to be taking a larger slice of the $1.9 trillion global vacation pie.

However, challenges such as inflationary pressures and rising operational costs could impact profitability. Investors will need to weigh these factors as they consider which cruise line is best positioned to capitalize on the industry’s recovery and continue gaining market share.

For 23 years we have been known as the best cruise tool for picking cabins on cruise ships. We keep track of over 270,785 staterooms and we have actual videos and/or pictures for 62,810 of them. Our site is loaded with features. Start by choosing one of the cruise lines in the section below to choose a cruise ship and explore deck plans and stateroom information. Unique Tools

Only on our website will you find a feature that allows you to drag one deck over another. Plus our cabin check tool makes it easy to see what is above and below your stateroom. Use our compare staterooms or even compare ship feature to easily see the differences in stateroom and ship features.

Photos and Videos

We use actual pictures and videos taken by every day cruisers to help show what the cabins and public areas look like. Plus we will pin pictures in the spot on the cruise ship deck plans near where the picture was taken.

How to pick a stateroom

So many choices. We provide a guide to how to get started finding the perfect stateroom.

We are one of the largest cruise ship deck plans websites in the world. We have over 246 ocean cruise ships in our database. For each ship we show the current cruise ship deck plan. We also show each cabin type (category) for that ship. Within each cabin type we provide detail diagrams (stateroom floor plans), pictures, videos, features, square footage and more. We also list the handicap cabins. We show actual ship exterior pictures and also pictures of places on the decks. We list all the main features for each ship including a listing of features NOT on that ship. This helps to make researching cruise ships so easy and so fun! We give you power at your finger tips to find the information you are looking for. It is all available from one page and usually just a click away. We hope you enjoy! The CRUISEDECKPLANS Team.

Decide what type of cabin you would like.

There are four main types (categories) of cabins: Inside cabins: These cabins are usually the lowest price. Typically they will have twin beds that convert to a queen size, a private bath with a shower, a closet for hanging clothes, a dresser and a television. These cabins do not have a window to let natural light in. To help give the occupants an impression of having a view, some inside cabins have a virtual view. That means there is a large screen that displays outside views. Expect to pay $100 to $200 a night for an inside cabin. Exception: Carnival has several cabins which are classified as inside cabins but actually have a french glass door which allows light into the room (no balcony, but the door can be opened). Carnival also has some cabins that have a window, but because the window has an obstructed view (that means there is a railing or object in the way) it is listed as an inside cabin. Royal Caribbean has some cabins that have a window but look out over an inside promenade area. These are called "promenade staterooms". Oceanview cabins: These cabins are like inside cabins but usually have a port hole or window. A window is much more desirable than a porthole because the porthole can be difficult to look through. Windows will vary in size and some cabins will even have full floor to ceiling windows. Most window sizes for oceanview cabins are about 4 feet by 3 feet. Be sure to read the cabin description carefully to determine if there is a different type of window. Windows can not be opened. Expect to pay $150 to $250 a night for an oceanview. Balcony cabins: These cabins are better, and more expensive, than oceanview cabins because they typically have full glass sliding doors that lead to a balcony. The balcony allows fresh air and light into the cabin and also may have additional chairs or loungers. Balconies tend to be separated by dividers which give some sense of privacy, but be aware that most balconies are not fully private and can be viewed from above or by the cabin next to you. Balconies on new Norwegian Cruise Line ships and Princess Cruise Line ships tend to be smaller and more narrow than balconies on other ships. We will list balcony size in the cabin description.  Carnival offers what is called a "Cove Balcony" on some of their ships. These balconies are very popular because they sit lower on the ship (closer to the water line). Expect to pay $200 to $400 a night for an balcony cabin. Suite: A suite is a premium cabin on a cruise ship. It is usually much larger than a balcony and includes more perks. Suites typically have a full bath tub, large shower, larger closets, larger balcony, larger TV, and butler services. Expect to pay $400 to over $1,000 a night for a suite.

Decide where you would like the cabin located.

Cabins are priced based on location on the ship. Typically cabins on lower decks are less expensive. Typically cabins midship (in the middle part of a deck) cost higher. Balcony and Suite cabins on the very aft of the ship can also be more expensive than other cabins. In order to set the pricing many cruise lines will divide each cabin type into sub categories. For example a balcony cabin may be divided into sub categories such as B1, B2, B3, B4. In most cases the cabin size and features in a sub category is the exactly the same. The only difference is usually the location of the cabin on the ship. Please look for the notes on the category descriptions to determine if there is a difference in size or features between the subcategories. Exception: Royal Caribbean and other cruise lines will also use sub categories to distinquish between how many occupants the cabin will sleep. Therefore a cabin that can sleep up to 4 people will be a different sub category from a cabin that sleeps only 2 people. You can also use our drag deck feature to determine if your cabin is in a good location. Cabins are best located when they are next to, above or below other cabins. As a rule of thumb avoid booking a cabin under a public area or kitchen. If you are looking for a balcony cabin, please be aware that on many ships the cabins that are below the pool deck may also be shaded by a roof overhang from the deck above. You can also use our drag deck feature to determine if there is a overhang. TIP: Many of the cruise ships are so large now and have so many floors that elevators are required to get to the public areas from your stateroom. But during peak times you could be waiting awhile to get on an elevator. If you pick a stateroom near the top or near the lower decks of the ship you may find a much better experience getting around. For example a stateroom on top of the ship gets you closer to the pool and buffet areas. A stateroom near the main public decks gets you closer to the lounges and bars. If you do need to take an elevator it is easier to find one that is empty if you are starting from the top or the bottom. You will also find the busiest elevators are the ones that go up to the buffet.

Service charge comparison

Many of the Cruise Lines charge a service fee on top of the cruise fare. Regardless of what the fee is used for, you will need to plan the following cost into the price of the cruise. The prices shown reflect the current service fee for a 7 day cruise for 2 people. (All prices subject to change)

The Good Ship Murder

The Good Ship Murder (Series)

The Good Ship Murder is a 2023 British Detective Drama series starring Shayne Ward and Catherine Tyldesley . The show is produced by Clapperboard Studios and was originally broadcast by Channel 5 .

Jack Grayling is an ex-police officer who changed careers to become a singer on a cruise liner. Kate Woods is the first officer of that liner, a career-focused "ice queen" who uses True Crime stories to relax. When murders and other serious crimes happen during the liner's cruise, the two of them join forces to play detective...

The Good Ship Murder contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Amateur Sleuth : Jack Grayling was once a police officer, but he's now left the force to become a singer on a cruise liner. It doesn't stop him getting drawn into the Mystery of the Week , of course. On the other hand, the liner's first officer Kate Woods is a true amateur sleuth, a fan of True Crime podcasts who's now testing her skills on real murders.
  • Black Widow : Brenda Donnelly, the villain of "La Rochelle", arranged for her last husband's seemingly accidental death as part of an Insurance-Motivated Murder . After arranging a similar policy for latest husband Tony, she tries the same thing again. However, this time her hired killer gets the wrong man, and Jack and Kate intervene before her second attempt's successful .
  • Chekhov's Gun : In "La Rochelle" Brenda and Tony upgrade to a larger cabin. Tony grumbles about the cost and mentions the jacuzzi, saying he doesn't expect to use it. Later in the episode Brenda drugs his drink and leaves him to drown in the jacuzzi .
  • Death by Falling Over : In "La Rochelle", it's mentioned that Brenda's previous husband, Ray Weaver, died after a drunken Staircase Tumble on the same liner. He was actually drugged and pushed, as his killer wanted to Make It Look Like an Accident .
  • Detective Drama : Each episode follows Jack Grayling and Kate Woods aboard the cruise liner as they unravel another case. The location changes each time as the cruise travels through the Mediterranean.
  • He Knows Too Much : In "La Rochelle", Jack and Kate realise that murder victim Nathan Graelish was a detective hired to investigate one of the passengers, and there's an assumption that he found something that led to his death. As it turns out, that's only partly true — Graelish was meeting the husband of Black Widow Brenda Donnelly to warn him that he was in danger, but was actually Murdered By Mistake when Brenda's accomplice attacked the wrong man .
  • Idiosyncratic Episode Naming : The liner continues its Mediterranean cruise between episodes, and each season one episode is named after the location of that episode's crime, e.g. "La Rochelle", "Casablanca", "Malta" and "At Sea".
  • Insurance-Motivated Murder : In "La Rochelle", it's revealed that Black Widow Brenda Donnelly arranged the seemingly accidental death of her previous husband, after taking out a sizeable life insurance policy. She tries it again with her current husband, but this time Jack and Kate's involvement means he's saved and she's arrested .
  • Make It Look Like an Accident : In "La Rochelle", Ray Weaver's death, long before the story starts, was ruled accidental. He was actually poisoned by his wife, using drugs that made him appear drunk, then pushed down the stairs by her accomplice .
  • Mistaken for Special Guest : In "La Rochelle", Beverley spots Nathan Graelish making notes and immediately assumes he's a mystery shopper who's been hired to report back on the cruise liner. He's actually a private detective who's keeping an eye on the Black Widow Brenda Donnelly, trying to prove she murdered her previous husband. It gets him killed .
  • Murder by Mistake : In "La Rochelle", Brenda Donnelly hires Pascal Lavigne to kill her husband Tony. However, Pascal's never met him and a case of mistaken identity means that he kills the man Tony was meeting, detective Nathan Graelish, instead. He doesn't realise his mistake until he gets a good look at Nathan's face .
  • Not the First Victim : "La Rochelle" starts with an investigation into the murder of detective Nathan Graelish, who was hired to investigate Brenda Donnelly after the death or Ray Weaver, her last husband. Ray's death appears to be accidental — he fell down the stairs while drunk — but Jack and Kate decide to revisit the evidence , discovering that it was murder after all .
  • Revenge : In "La Rochelle", Maureen Weaver wants revenge on her former sister-in-law, Brenda Donnelly, as she believes Brenda killed her brother and made it look like an accident . When the detective Maureen hires to gather evidence is murdered, she takes the direct approach and tries to kill Brenda instead .
  • Revisiting the Cold Case : "La Rochelle" starts with the murder of Nathan Graelish, a private detective who was investigating the death of Ray Weaver on a previous cruise, over a year earlier. Weaver's own death was ruled accidental, as he fell down stairs while drunk, but Jack takes a closer look at the evidence and realises that someone decided to Make It Look Like an Accident .
  • Staircase Tumble : In "La Rochelle", it's mentioned that Brenda's previous husband, Ray Weaver, died after falling down the stairs while drunk . He was actually drugged and pushed, as his killer wanted to Make It Look Like an Accident .
  • Tampering with Food and Drink : In "La Rochelle", Black Widow Brenda tries to murder Tony, her current husband, by drugging his drink and then leaving him to drown in the jacuzzi. It seems she did something similar to her last husband, who was drugged so that he appeared very drunk, then pushed down the stairs by her accomplice .
  • Wrap-Up Song : When Jack's not solving crimes, he's singing as part of the liner's entertainment team. Each episode ends with a musical number as he delivers a performance to the passengers after The Summation .
