The Haunting

Cooperstown Candlelight Ghost Tours offers year-round, one-hour walking tours of the village that combine the true, documented ghost stories of Cooperstown with the village's rich and vibrant history. Originally founded in 1786 by William Cooper, Cooperstown is a small town bordering Lake Otsego that is filled with numerous ghost stories, both old and recent. The tour includes stops at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the Christ Church Graveyard, which is said to be haunted each midnight by the ghosts of the Cooper family slaves and servants. Then comes River Street, the most ghostly street in the village, which features a trio of haunted houses: Byberry Cottage, Greencrest, and Pomeroy Place. Each of these distinctive houses was once owned by the Cooper family, and each is said to remain haunted to this day.

The tour culminates with a stop at the southern edge of Lake Otsego, where we discuss the history of Hyde Hall, a 200-year-old building that is haunted by the ghosts of the British Clarke family.

In 1996, the first farmhouse brewery in America was built in the southern part of Cooperstown – for the first time in 100+ years.

And trust me, they’ve got a lot of beer for you to enjoy since patrons can try more than 25 individually crafted beers, including vanilla stout, Belgian-style double chocolate, peach and apricot ale, New England-style IPA, orange and coriander witbier, and many more.

Heck, Ommegang Brewery even brews their own cider, with three different flavors available, including chai cider. Yeah, you read that correctly!

However, in addition to their awesome selection of beverages, there’s also a natural amphitheater behind the brewery, in which the owners hold the annual Summer Concert Series.

All aboard! It’s time to haul anchor and set sail across Otsego Lake with the fine folks of the Glimmerglass Queen Tour Boat company – bring ye spyglasses and shout if you spy any pirates matey!

Alright, jk everyone, you are unlikely to see any pirate ships while floating on the calm, clear waters near Cooperstown.

Instead, you get to enjoy the feeling of being on the water while you learn about local history in this 50 foot, purpose-built excursion boat. I hope someone brought a cooler and some beverages!

Each tour out onto the water comes provided with narration, where patrons can journey back in time while listening to the legendary Leatherstocking Tales, written by former Cooperstown resident and son of its founder, James Fenimore Cooper!

Yup, relaxation is the word of the day here, and music is also provided to help passengers forget the troubles of land life and just sit back and chill out.

There are also bench seats available on the open-top deck, even though the view is excellent no matter where you are on the boat. There’s also a table and chairs area complete with a bar. So, I mean really, what’s not to like?

11. Do Some Yoga…with GOATS!

I’ll be the first one to admit that I’m not super into yoga. I mean, not only am I incredibly inflexible but I forget to breathe while doing intricate poses and inevitably start to feel SUPER nauseous.

Yeah, it’s about as anti-fun as it sounds. But, I figured I’d give yoga another shot since I heard that one of the best things to do in Cooperstown NY.

And let me tell you, it’s about as fun and weird as it sounds. So, you’ll enjoy a lovely, guided yoga class while being surrounded by the cutest baby goats that you ever did see.

They’re super friendly and will walk around, bleat, and just generally make you hardcore smile as you try to get your yogi swerve on.

So, join one of the NY Goat Yoga Classes at 3:00 pm on Sundays and prepare for the experience of a lifetime.

Pro Tip: If you’re looking to booze it up, you can always try one of their specialty classes, like a goat yoga and wine class.

Hours: Classes are held Sundays at #;00 pm and are 45 minutes long, with 15 minutes of goat-related selfies afterward.

12. Visit Howe Caverns

This place is legendary with a capital “L”. I mean, I used to visit all the time as a kid and remember being totally impressed by how massive this network of caves really was.

However, just in case you’re not 100% sure what I’m actually talking about, Howe Caverns is a super popular tourist attraction in New York.

In fact, it’s the second most visited natural landmark in the state, after Niagara Falls , and is about a 50-minute drive away from Cooperstown.

However, doing a day trip here is easily one of the best things to do in Cooperstown NY since this place is known for being home to the single largest cavern in the northeast.

So, prepare to descend more than 156 feet beneath the Earth’s surface as you experience fascinating rock formations – like the Giant Formation and the Titan’s Temple – that are illuminated by a kaleidoscope of neon lights during a ninety-minute tour that includes a nifty little boat ride.

You’ll also traverse through limestone corridors, pass massive boulders, and marvel at gigantic stalactites as the subterranean River Styx carves its way through these massive rocks.

And while no advanced caving equipment is required, you will do a fair bit of walking over uneven and sometimes wet/dark surfaces, so plan accordingly.

The temperature also stays at a constant, 52 F, so be sure to bring a warm jacket. And, as you probably already guessed, no food or drinks are allowed in the cave.

13. Hunt for Buried Treasure at Wood Bull Antiques

If you’re into antiques and shopping in general, then a trip to Wood Bull Antiques will be one of the best things to do in Cooperstown NY for you!

It’s basically like a glorified treasure trove of historic goodies that you can pursue as you try to find the perfect, one-of-a-kind, Cooperstown souvenir.

Because this place? Well, they stock anything and everything you could imagine, including wooden tables, vintage dressers, Ming-inspired horses, old-world lamps, full-size human statues, and more!

So, if you can dream it up then this uber-cool place probably has it in one form or another.

14. Visit Cooperstown Barnyard Swing

And last but certainly not least on this of the all-time best things to do in Cooperstown NY is Barnyard Swing.

Now, contrary to what the name might suggest, this place is actually a giant, family-fun center that is hidden away in Cooperstown Dreams Park.

It features a wealth of amazing activities that are fun for the entire family, including an 18-hole mini-golf course, gem mining, Wild West laser tag, and the Sassy Cow Creamery.

Personally, I’m a fan of the mini-golf course myself but the ice cream here is also pretty dang good too since they have some great soft serve.

Games here are also really affordable and start at just $7.50 per round, or $5.00 per round on Fridays.

And FYI, laser tag is also really reasonably priced at $6.00 per person for a 20-minute game.

15. Fly Cider Mill And Orchard

One of my favorite stops in Cooperstown is the Fly cider mill and orchard. Most people choose to head here between games. If you ask me, you don’t really need an excuse to head there and if you have kids, this is a perfect place to spend time. 

Why? Because it is absolutely food heaven. With free samples (50+ items to choose from) and glasses of cider and wine, it provides the recipe for relaxation and indulgence.

Oh and remember I mentioned that it is a great place for kids? Well here they have a pond, lots of open air, a restaurant, a playground and tours around the mill! More than enough activities to keep everyone entertained!

Pro tip: Take the self guided (and free!) tour of the mill before you kick back and relax. It will give you a renewed appreciation for the cider you drink. Oh and

Price: The self guided tour is free! The Motorcoach group organizes some intriguing tours. Be forewarned that these are group tours and have 25 people in each group.

16. Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley Railroad

The Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley railroad is quite the experience. The tracks were laid down way back in 1868. I know… I know… The railroad is really old. Back then this was the main form of transport. Today however it is more of an attraction than a mode of transport.

There is so much fun packed into the train with themed rides, pretend train robberies and even parties! I mean how cool is that? And if you really love trains, you can book a chance to actually operate the train controls. 

Pro Tip: Check the Cooperstown website to know what the theme is running. Alternatively, try to make it for these rides on Saturday evenings when the best bands in NY entertain the riders for a whole 3 hours. Side note: You need to be 21 to get onto the Saturday evening ride. There are special themed rides for kids.

Hours: Each of the special rides is at a different time. The regular rides however are every Saturday at 7pm and run for 3 hours.

17. Glimmerglass Festival

The Glimmerglass Festival, a shining beacon of American opera since 1975, keeps the world of music alive and humming every summer. Nestled on the banks of Otsego Lake, just a stone’s throw from Cooperstown, New York, this festival is not your regular summer gathering! 

With the Alice Busch Opera Theater as its stage, the festival presents a medley of four operas, each unique and enchanting, performed in a rotating repertory. And let me tell you, Glimmerglass isn’t about just any opera. We’re talking about new, undiscovered gems, rare masterpieces that don’t always get the limelight they deserve. 

Remember when they were co-produced with the New York City Opera? Those were the days! So, if you’re looking for the perfect blend of summer, music, and a dash of adventure, mark your calendar for the Glimmerglass Festival – the second-largest summer opera festival in the United States and a hub of creative brilliance.

18. Hyde Hall

Prepare to be mesmerized by the historic Hyde Hall. The best way to explore it is to take a guided tour that lasts just under an hour. This majestic 50-room country house has been standing tall, overlooking James Fenimore Cooper’s fabled “Glimmerglass” for over two centuries. 

As your journey unfolds, you’ll unfold the saga of its construction, its period of decline, and the ultimate resurrection that brought it back to its former glory. Step into the mansion and feast your eyes on what has been quoted as “the finest two rooms built in a private home in America prior to 1840.”

Cooperstown in a day: Best things to do during a day trip in baseball's hometown

There's so much to do in Cooperstown, a single day isn't enough to see it all. But here are some tips for how to pack the most fun into one day in baseball's hometown.

Start your day at  Stagecoach Coffee Roastery and Espresso Bar on Pioneer Street. Just steps from the Baseball Hall of Fame, the cafe offers a wide variety of options for caffeine lovers, from cappuccino and espresso to fresh-baked pastries and smoothies. Enjoy your morning pick-me-up at the espresso bar or on the garden terrace; free wireless internet is available.

Take the morning to enjoy Otsego Lake , walking north to the shore of the 10-mile-long body of water. Climb up the steep steps of Clinton Dam to an overlook where the Susquehanna River meets Otsego Lake. Or sit on a bench at Lakefront Park, taking in the serene view that inspired great American writer James Fenimore Cooper .

About 10 minutes north of the village, Glimmerglass State Park offers even more recreational opportunities, with a public beach and picturesque nature trails. Be sure to stop by the Hyde Hall estate , a neoclassic country mansion built in the early 1800s by a wealthy English landowner.

The  National Baseball Hall of Fame is the centerpiece of the quiet community, which has embraced the sport's past and present heroes, from Willie Mays to Joe Torre. Summer hours run from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and you can leave the museum for a drink or meal and return later to peruse more historical statistics. After walking through the gallery of bronze plaques honoring the 300-plus Hall of Fame members, check out the Sandlot Kids' Clubhouse, designed for the youngest baseball fans.

Enjoy Main Street's quaint shops filled with baseball memorabilia and souvenirs as you walk to nearby Doubleday Field , a 10,000-seat stadium that hosts the annual Hall of Fame Legends Game.

Take a break in the afternoon to cruise the Cooperstown Beverage Trail , where breweries are reviving the area's rich hops history.  Tasting and tours at most breweries end at 6 p.m., so plan your route accordingly.

On Railroad Avenue in the village, Cooperstown Distillery offers complimentary tastings of their Beanball Bourbon, Abner Doubleday's Double Play Vodka, classic American whiskey, Glimmerglass Vodka and Fenimore Gin. Several of the offerings are sold in a baseball-shaped decanter, which is etched with 108 stitches and sits atop a pedestal shaped like a baseball field -- the perfect souvenir for a baseball and spirits enthusiast.

Don't miss Brewery Ommegang , built in 1997 on 136 acres of land that used to be a hop farm just outside the village. Tours and tastings feature the series of beers inspired by HBO's drama Game of Thrones, including this year's Three-Eyed Raven, a dark Saison ale. One tip: on busy days, make sure to place your request for a cafe table when you sign up for your tasting or tour. The tables fill up quickly, but the full menu is also served at the bar.

A wood-fired pizza oven turns out authentic Neopolitan-style pies with toppings like figs, prosciutto and truffles; the menu's gnocchi and fettuccine is handmade daily. The bar stocks many of the area's finest craft brew options. Reservations are suggested during the summer months.

Finish your day with ice cream at one of the nostalgic community's many roadside stands. Make your own custom flavor at the Cooperstown Penguin , where a machine blends your choice of hard or soft ice cream with fresh ingredients like strawberries, peanut butter or candy. Served in a cone or a cup, the custom ice cream is slightly softer than hard ice cream, but slightly firmer than soft serve.  The menu also includes milkshakes and sundaes.

Cooperstown haunts, motorcoach group itinerary.

Cooperstown & Otsego County makes a great place for small group getaways as well as motorcoach bus tours. While tour options can be tailored to suit each group"s needs, our "Cooperstown Haunts" itinerary is perfect for visitors interested in the spookier side of Cooperstown.

Please note: Tour organizers must contact these sites directly when developing their group itinerary to ensure parties can be accommodated, and to identify nearby parking options. Most attractions have varying seasonal hours. For motorcoach groups, it is best to visit between the months of September and May to avoid long lines and higher rates. Also note that Glimmerglass Festival performances are only offered on set dates.

Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum  (1-3 hours) 

Tour the ghostly galleries of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. This one-hour group tour begins in the famed Bullpen Theater, where baseball"s relationship to ghosts and horror is explained, followed by a guided gallery walk to learn about America"s most haunted baseball fields, then on to the Plaque Gallery where apparitions of some of baseball"s biggest heroes have been sighted. Haunted group tours are available by pre-arrangement. Drop off in the designated area in front of the Hall of Fame and bus parks in the  Yellow Trolley Lot  if not having lunch at Toscana, across the street.

For a popular group "free time" option, allow them some on-their-own time on Cooperstown's Main Street. With accolades from Architectural Digest and MSN.com for its small-town charm, there"s plenty to discover in this one-stoplight town. The Heroes of Baseball Wax Museum, Cooperstown Bat Company, and Doubleday Baseball Field are perfect for baseball fans, and art galleries, specialty retail, and coffee shops offer a perfect place to peel away for a relaxing break.

The Otesaga Resort Hotel  (1-2 hours) Situated in a picturesque lakeside setting, The Otesaga Resort Hotel provides elegant, luxury accommodations amid the best of Cooperstown. Built in 1909, the property occupies 700 feet of lakefront on the southern shore of Lake Otsego, the famed "Glimmerglass" of James Fenimore Cooper"s novels. Selected as a member of the prestigious Historic Hotels of America by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, The Otesaga is reminiscent of a genteel era, when a gracious welcome was the standard. Drop off near the Hawkeye Grill Entrance on the left side facing front. Free bus parking to the far left of the lot.

Hyde Hall (1-2 hours)

A National Historic Landmark, Hyde Hall has a well-documented history of paranormal activity dating back some 200 years, when the Clarke family called this architectural gem their summer home. Today, visitors report hearing knocking, footsteps, distant music, and have even seen fully-body apparitions. Guided ghost tours for groups 20+ are available by pre-arrangement from May – October (note: Hyde Hall is not heated late in the season). Featured on  Ghost Hunters . Free, on-site parking.

Fly Creek Cider Mill (1.5 hours)

Step back in time and watch the 160-year old Fly Creek Cider Mill press fresh, sweet cider during the autumn peak harvest season. Groups can enjoy a self-guided tour to learn about the Mill"s production and history with ties to Johnny Appleseed, and receive a voucher for the popular Mill Store Marketplace featuring locally-made products, a commemorative wine glass, or a tasty treat from the Snack Barn & Bakery. "Things That Go Bump in the Night" Tour at The Farmers" Museum (1-1.5 hours)

This lantern-lit tour of the shadowy grounds of The Farmers" Museum, gives groups the haunting details of the mysteries and ghostly happenings of this historic 19th century living museum village. From the young ghost who roams the Bump Tavern to the curious sounds from the Blacksmith Shop, this tour is inspired by Louis C. Jones"s Things That Go Bump in the Night, a record of haunted history in New York State. Drop guests off at the museum entrance and bus parks at the  Yellow Trolley Lot .

On the shores of Otsego Lake on land once owned by American novelist James Fenimore Cooper, the Fenimore Art Museum houses renowned collections of American folk and fine art, and American Indian art and artifacts. Day 1 dubrovnik: a gem of the adriatic.

Take in the long stretch of the Adriatic coastline as your plane makes it's descent As the high stone walls and medieval buildings come into view, imagine life here thousands of years ago and perhaps even the occasional dragon beating its wings in the distance. We welcome you to Dubrovnik and to Croatia, and we invite you to unleash your sense of adventure and imagination as you discover the best of the country's coast and islands.

Often the best views of the city are actually from outside of it. Put that theory to the test as you paddle a kayak along the historic city walls, exploring hidden caves and stopping to swim and snorkel. Back on dry land, you'll swap the views from the water for views from above as you ride a cable car up nearby Mount Srđ for breathtaking vistas of Dubrovnik and the surrounding islands.

Day 3 Korčula: Along the Dalmatian Coast

Dubrovnik begs to be further explored and you'll have some extra time to do so today on your own. Soak in every last bit of the city's beauty before taking to the sea and heading up the Dalmatian Coast to the island of Korčula for your first taste of life on the Croatian isles.

Day 4 Korčula: Your OMG Day

Discover Korčula today on your own terms. Choose between 2 activities which will get you outdoors and active as well as sampling some of the regions delicacies. Whichever you choose, your body,, mind and stomach will be forever grateful.

Day 5 Hvar: Island Life

The Dalmatian Islands are nothing short of spectacular and each one is quite unique with its own feel. Swap Korčula Island for Hvar and see for yourself, exploring the town of Hvar as well as taking in the island's gorgeous beaches and lively nightlife.

Day 6 Hvar: A Day on the Water

Feel the wind on your face and taste the sea in the air as you head out from Hvar to explore some of the nearby islands. You'll spend the day in and out of the water, exploring hidden coves, swimming from the boat and hiking to a secluded beach. If you. could imagine a perfect day actively exploring and island-hopping in the sun and sand, this would be it.

Day 7 Trogir: Explore Split

Back on the mainland, the city of Split is the largest along Croatia's coast, where you'll be immersed in its history and beautiful architecture in the old part of the city. An important maritime transport hub in the region, Split occupies a strategic position on a peninsula that juts out into the Adriatic Sea, and has been inhabited for over 2000 years.

Day 8 Trogir: Krka Waterfalls and National Park

Immerse yourself in Croatia's natural beauty on a hike through a lush forest, following a river until the sight of a breathtaking waterfall comes into view. Enjoy the moment and the sound of the cascading water before re-entering the forest and allowing the sound of the birds to take over. Back in urban civilization, take in more beautiful architecture and historical landmarks in Sibenik on the way back to Trogir.

The adventure finishes today, and you can depart at any time.
