Road Test: Chrysler Grand Voyager 2.8 CRD LX 5dr Auto
SPEC HIGHLIGHTS
It was more the way Chrysler's marketing lady said it, than the actual words she used when she was talking about the new Grand Voyager.
"We invented this market", sounds innocent enough, but there was just a hint of bitterness in her voice, a sense of exasperation that Chrysler invented the MPV, but has since seen Ford, Renault et al steal the vast majority of the sales.
Things should improve with this latest car. The 2.8-litre diesel engine is carried over but improved, and the 3.8-litre V6 petrol also remains.
But it's the diesel that's important, and is the one tested here. It is much quieter than the old one, but don't confuse that with class-leading. Above 3,000rpm there's still a lot of rattle, but in truth you don't need to take it over that point as there's no extra grunt up there.
The Voyager produces 161bhp and 266lb ft, but in a car that weighs 2,100kg that's scarcely adequate. Better to leave 20 minutes extra and not rush, because for that, the Voyager's fine. It's refined at motorway speeds and the ride now feels more controlled so you don't get all the awful suspension movement that used to afflict the last car. The handling and steering are still nothing to be proud of, but do the job adequately.
But this car is all about the interior, and for flexibility the Grand Voyager is as good as any. The clever Stow 'n' Go system is retained here, so all the rear seats fold easily into the floor.
A new system also appears called Swivel 'n' Go, where the two middle chairs swivel round and you can fit a table for the kids to play on. You can also spec twin DVD screens which can play separate DVDs. But at £1,750 (inc satnav), you might be better off just buying portable DVD players.
In terms of ease of access, the Grand Voyager has the Galaxy trumped because all models come with electric-opening sliding doors and boot.
But elsewhere it still can't quite match the Galaxy in terms of interior quality or diesel refinement. The Voyager feels more of a purpose-built MPV than the Ford, and its superior interior room means it will still attract followers, but I have a feeling that the Chrysler marketing lady will still be bitter about market share. It has some real, useable luggage space behind the third row of seats.
This is unusual because most of the large people movers have 500mm or less with the third seat in use, and it can be a struggle to fit in something the esky for a picnic.
Also, for what is ostensibly a family wagon, it makes it pretty difficult to pack up and take the tribe on hols without taking a trailer or using an expensive, roof-mounted luggage pod.

- Chrysler Voyager 2005 review: road test
Even more impressive is Voyager's new "Stow n Go" system that allows both second and third row seats to be folded. tumbled and hidden completely out of sight beneath the cabin floor.
With the seats upright, the storage bins below offer an additional 340 litres of storage space.
In some people movers you can stow the third row under the floor, but Chrysler is the only company to offer the facility for both rows.
As you can image, with both rows of seats tucked away, the Voyager has a huge flat load area suitable for carrying larger items like furniture.
We were impressed last time we drove Voyager, particularly with the car's whisper quiet ride.
Our test vehicle, the base model Grand Voyager (they're all Grand/long wheelbase models now) exhibits the same kind of refinement.
The extra 288mm length (5096mm versus 4808mm) and the addition of Stow and Go takes the car to another level.
However, Voyager is certainly not aimed at the budget end of the market, not with a starting price of $55,990.
And the size of the car sometimes works against it, particularly when it comes to parking.
The seven-seat Voyager is powered by a 3.3-litre petrol V6 that delivers 128kW of power and 278Nm of torque.
Transmission is a traditional four-speed auto operated even more traditionally by a column mounted shift.
Sorry Chrysler but this is just a bit too American for our tastes and can be fiddly to operate.
It works well enough but most manufac- turers are now offering five cogs with their autos.
The car also lacks a driver's footrest, probably a victim of the change from left to right hand drive.
Chrysler needs to address both items plus Voyager's fuel consumption could be an issue.
Claimed fuel use is 13.3L/100km, but in real world driving it gets more like 15.7L which is excessive.
On the safety front Voyager scores a maximum five-star safety rating from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Adminis- tration.
Standard equipment includes three-row sup- plemental side curtain airbags, advanced multi- stage front air bags, ABS and three-zone airconditioning.

Hi Just a point the side light dimmer make sure you leave in the second position down from top or the battery will drain out.

Ok @Admaalzo66
Recently i have had issues with my 2005 cgv 2.8 crd with starting i love this car but starting is a mayor issue with mine currently. It struggles to start in the mornings if left for hours i bought the battery 7 months ago so i do not think the battery is finished yet i can get it starting by charging the battery but if i try just starting it it cranks for 2 - 3 seconds and dies a couple of weeks back it left me stranded outside the school the starter locked up i managed to hit the started a couple times and it started right back on but im not sure if that has anything to do with the battery draining and after i charge the battery the car starts with no issues any help would be apreciated cheers.
Ok I take that your Fuel Filter been changed recently, if not change it b4 you will do anything else.
1. Remove the plastic engine cover x3 10mm
2. Buy or get ~0.5cmx 1,5m or longer hose
3. At the end of the Common Rail pressure pipe undo the return hose and try to block it with a screw for example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5FnOU4MiIQ
4. If you on your own you will need long hose - Connect your hose to the return valve ... and put the other end to the bottle (secured place to avoid silage).
5. Start cranking engine as you do (in the morning pref - on cold) and watch if there is any fuel going out of the return valve - if yes - replace the valve at the end (Bosch only) ~£50 - £60.
6. If no leak on cranking or running engine, try to rev it to 2.500k (max allowance on P gear) and watch if the valve is letting any fuel or not if yes replace if not go to no.7
7. Remove inlet pressure sensor (Bosch part) 4 pin plug x1 hex nut bolt - its in the inlet not far from the common rail (ref. to the picture attached)
8. Use brake cleaner to clean in from any deposit - refit and test the cold start on car after few hrs.
9. If not any better, buy new sensor (Bosch I paid ~ £25)
Also good tip to improve cold start is to buy set of new glow plugs, they are cheep as chips these days £10 each all you nee id long 10mm socket to replace them.
You need to remove alternator to get to the 1st glow plug.
Hope this will help.

I’m always knocking this to the first position when I get out my car!

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).
Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.
Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).
Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).
UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.
Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
