Construction begins on Chengdu Wanda City-China’s largest cultural tourism project

chengdu wanda tourism city

A groundbreaking ceremony was held for Chengdu Wanda Cultural Tourism City (“Chengdu Wanda City”) on September 25. This development will be Wanda Group’s tenth cultural project to begin construction as well as the largest and most fully equipped cultural project in China.

The RMB 53 billion development occupies a 310-hectare site in Chengdu’s Binjiang Dujiangyan New District. The project will include a Wanda Mall, outdoor theme park, stage show theatre, luxury resorts, a bar street and much more. Chengdu Wanda City is a first-rate, one of a kind and completely unique development in terms of both its design and construction. Many of the projects facilities are state-of-the-art and independently designed by Wanda, fully displaying the unique characteristics of local Sichuan culture.

Wanda Mall is the centerpiece of the Wanda City development. It includes various facilities such as an indoor ski park, horror park, movie park and shopping mall. Since the Wanda Mall is an indoor complex it remains operational throughout the entire year.

Wanda Mall is the Wanda City project’s centerpiece. It includes various facilities such as an indoor ski park, horror park, movie park and shopping mall. Because the Wanda Mall is an indoor complex it remains operational throughout the entire year. The indoor ski park is the worlds most advanced fourth generation facility with four ski slopes of differing gradients including a 70-meter steep drop.  Wanda Mall will a unique Horror Park that will include a rollercoaster and other thrilling rides. The development will also house a Wanda Movie Park with rides designed in accordance with local Sichuan culture. In addition, Wanda will add its own stage show “The Qingcheng Show”, which will fuse cultural elements such as acrobatics and martial arts together with state-of-the-art stage equipment to create a leading international theatrical masterpiece.

In addition to the mall, Chengdu Wanda City will include an outdoor theme park on a scale comparable to Disneyland that will house attractions such as the world’s biggest inverted roller-coaster.

The development will also house a premium six-star luxury resort and two four-star hotels, as well as a lakeside bar street that will be home to 20 famous bars from China and overseas.

Chengdu Wanda City, which plans to open at the end of 2018, is expected to create over 30,000 jobs, attract up to 20 million annual visitors and generate RMB 5 billion in annual tourism revenue.

Wanda Group Chairman Wang Jianlin stated that Chengdu Wanda City brings together the company's experience in culture, tourism and commercial real estate. The project also does a great job applying state-of-the-art technology and innovative ideas that perfectly respect local culture. Chengdu Wanda City will play an integral role in actively promoting the transformation of Sichuan’s tourism industry and become a global tourism destination and world-class brand.

Latest Giant Chinese Indoor Snow Centre Another of World’s Biggest

The latest huge indoor snow centre in China, which is due to have a soft opening at the end of next month, will be another of the world’s largest.

The Chengdu Sunac Cultural Tourism City Water and Snow World in Chengdu has been built by the company behind the world’s biggest indoor snow centre in Harbin, Northeast China, and two other giant indoor snow complexes.

Chengdu is on the other side of the country, with a very different climate, and is the capital of southwestern China’s Sichuan province.

chengdu wanda tourism city

Work on the massive facility, covering 367,600 square metres and reported to be the largest reinforced concrete structure to hold an  indoor ski resort in China, was halted during the height of the country’s coronavirus pandemic, but has now resumed with social-distancing and other measures in place, and the centre is reported to have received final official permission to open.

Snowmaking tests are reported to have been successful with the snow currently lying 60cm (two feet) deep.

The complex is believed to have not quite so big an indoor snow area as Harbin but unlike the northern facility, it features a large indoor water park.

It will be China’s 32nd indoor snow centre.  Only two other countries, India and Japan, have ever operated more than 10 indoor snowcentres, although the height of Japan’s indoor snow period was in the 1990s and there are now far fewer still open there.  Most of India’s facilities are ‘snow experience centres’ without skiing or snowboarding.

chengdu wanda tourism city

Work on the facility, originally named ‘Chengdu Wanda City’ and at the time described as “China’s largest cultural tourism project” officially began with a ground-breaking ceremony on September 25th, 2015

The development, originally budgeted at RMB 53 billion ($7.4 billion US / €6.9 billion) occupies a 310-hectare site in Chengdu’s Binjiang Dujiangyan New District. Along with the indoor ski slope the project planned to include a shopping mall, outdoor theme park, theatre, luxury resorts, a bar street, what’s described as a ‘horror park’ and a movie park. It’s unclear how many of these facilities are included in the final version.

The indoor ski park has being described as, “the world’s most advanced fourth generation facility with four ski slopes of differing gradients including a 70-metre vertical drop.”

The centre is built on seven floors, two of which are underground.  The length of the longest slope is no known.

The centre originally aimed to open at the end of 2018 and is expected to create over 30,000 jobs, attract up to 20 million annual visitors, with a capacity of 4,000 in the snow centre at any one time and generate RMB 5 billion in annual tourism revenue.

Full opening is due in September this year.

Dalian Wanda pursues major expansion of cultural tourism theme parks across China

Dalian Wanda Group Qingdao Movie Metropolis

Words:  Charles Read

| 3 min read

The Wanda Group conglomerate is fuelling the growth of China’s domestic theme park industry with plans for integrated resorts in key cities such as Wuxi and Kunming. It plans for major development of cultural tourism theme parks across China.

Wanda is responding to the increased demand for more home-grown theme parks.  The group is already a key player in the growth of China’s theme park industry. It has ten cultural tourism projects in cities such as Wuhan, Nanchang, Hefei and Harbin.  It says it expects to have 18 mega projects by 2021.

“We hope to create a one-stop shop resort for mainland Chinese. They will be able to enjoy leisure and entertainment culture without going overseas,” says Andrew Kam , senior vice-president of Wanda Travel Culture Innovation Group and president of Beijing Wanda Themed Entertainment.   He points out that opportunities have risen as China started to promote short holidays, rather than the traditional week-long ‘golden weeks’.  “This opens up opportunities for domestic travellers to venture into close-by areas for holidays.”

Wanda’s plans include the construction of integrated resorts in key cities such as Wuxi and Kunming.  Projects in Chengdu, Guilin and Chongqing are already being designed.

Harbin Wanda City Snow Park cultural tourism theme parks

The sixth Wanda City opened in Harbin last year.  As Blooloop reported  this major cultural tourism project covers a gross floor area of 900,000sqm. It combines a mall, an outdoor theme park, three hotels, a stage show and the world’s largest indoor snow park (80,000sqm).  Meanwhile Wanda City Qingdao, which features the world’s biggest movie studio , opened in April 2018.

Cultural tourism theme parks “make the pie bigger”

The flagship Guangzhou Wanda City is scheduled to open on June 15, 2019.  The US$78 million project will mark Wanda’s first foray into the tier-one Chinese city.

“As a key development for Southern China, we estimate about 20 million visitors for the first-year operation in Guangzhou,” says Kam.  He expects they will break even in their second year. “Rather than competing with existing operators head to head, we are going to make the pie bigger. We will do this by focusing on (new types of) products i.e. world’s second largest indoor ski park and indoor water park,” he continues.

Tony Duan is general manager of sales and marketing for Wanda. He says that stiff competition in China is driving the enrichment of park content.  It has also pushed the importance of partnerships to enhance experience.  “We make sure we have many different formats in our theme parks to meet users’ diversified and sophisticated demands,” he says.  He cites the Han show at both Harbin and Xishuangbanna. This offers a combined experience of technology with dance, acrobatics, wushu (a form of martial art), and gymnastics.

Wanda Group is based in Beijing.  It was founded in 1988 and is the world’s largest private property developer.

Wanda Opens First “Tourism City” in Nanchang

Joe Kleiman

Nanchang, China – On May 28, Wanda Group opened the Wanda Cultural Tourism City, the company’s first city-size culture and tourism project, in the Eastern Chinese city of Nanchang, Jiangxi Province. Filled with an outdoor amusement park, an indoor theme park, hotel resorts and dining and commercial districts, “Wanda City” spans 200 hectares (2 square kilometers) and the cultural and tourism segment of the project is a 22 billion yuan investment.

The project is one of many to come, with year-round accessibility and the incorporation of Chinese local culture. According to Wanda Group Chairman Wang Jianlin, Wanda will unveil its second Wanda City in Hefei this September and another five are planned to open within China in the next three years. By 2020, Wanda will unveil 15 Wanda City projects in China and five overseas.

SmartSize (1)

At the center of Wanda City is “Wanda Mall,” designed by Stufish Entertainment Architects , a giant indoor space that breaks down seasonal climate barriers to reach “year-round amusement.” Wanda Mall boasts one of Asia’s largest aquariums, designed by renowned US company TVS Design and managed by Hanwha from South Korea. It also includes a film park and “Kids Place,” a children’s zone–the first of its kind in central China–with play lands and educational exhibits.

The outdoor theme park covers 80 hectares, with close to 50 entertainment facilities, including the fastest, highest and longest roller coaster and the highest drop tower in China. The theme park features stage shows and parade performances.

Forrec CEO Gord Dorrett

Global entertainment design company, FORREC Ltd. , was on hand for the opening and also at the helm for the master plan and design development of the 78-hectare outdoor theme park. The park reflects the rich historical and cultural content of the JiangXi region of southern China and includes 32 rides, including what is billed as the tallest, fastest and longest wooden roller coaster in China. FORREC was inspired by the idea that Nanchang is well known for its fresh water lakes – including Poyang Lake, the biggest fresh water lake in China – as well as majestic mountains and other beautiful natural features. Building a theme park around an existing lake as well as the site’s rolling topography created design challenges for FORREC.

“Storytelling is a central aspect of this region and the culture is rich with material to draw from,” said Linda Hung, Senior Director, Theme Parks, FORREC Ltd. “We used some of Jiangxi’s favourite stories to create immersive experiences that take guests through five zones, celebrating the porcelain industry, ancient poetry, famous architecture, fairy folklore, life on the water and natural splendor.”

“It’s our pleasure to be a part of another exciting Wanda Group project,” said Gord Dorrett, President and CEO of FORREC Ltd., who attended the opening ceremony. “This is an iconic brand in China and FORREC has been honoured to help develop several recent projects including Wanda Xishuangbanna Theme Park and Water Park in the region by the same name and also Wanda Movie Park in Wuhan, China.

At the interactive movie park, tourists can fight 3D monsters and fly through China’s Jiangxi Province in a flight simulator. Wanda City also features a movie theater with 14 screens and 3,000 seats, a dining district with 50 domestic and overseas restaurants, a commercial shopping area and clubs where tourists can enjoy nightlife.

For accommodations, Wanda is planning nine hotels, with five, including a six-star luxury Wanda Vista Hotel, already open.

Nanchang Wanda City can accommodate 30,000 tourists with projected annual visits of over 10 million, creating 20,000 jobs.

  • China's wellness tourism industry attracts visitors from afar

"Relax your body, stretch your arms and feel your heartbeat," echoed the instructor's voice as tourists hailing from 12 foreign countries engaged in Tai Chi warm-up exercises at a health resort in north China's Shanxi Province.

These tourists arrived in Jincheng, renowned as a "health and wellness demonstration city" with a well-established wellness industry and splendid natural environment, in mid-May for a month-long wellness vacation. According to the team leader surnamed Lu, this wasn't the first time foreign tourists have been attracted to China for a wellness-focused tour.

"Traditional Chinese health practices are very beneficial, and I believe they should be shared with more people outside China," said Lu, who has traveled to various European and American countries over the years, promoting traditional Chinese wellness practices.

Since 2012, Lu has been organizing wellness tours for foreign visitors to Chinese cities such as Guilin, Chengdu and Jincheng. To date, more than 60,000 people from 21 countries have joined his tours.

"This is my first time in China, and everything here exceeds my imagination. People I met on the streets smiled friendly at me, and the environment makes me feel refreshed," said Hicks William Arthur, who hails from Canada.

Speaking about his exposure to Chinese wellness culture during this trip, Arthur said that the concept of "harmony" from traditional Chinese culture left the deepest impression on him.

"Chinese culture believes that everything is interconnected, and people support each other. Therefore, we don't feel lonely in this world. This concept is helpful for those facing psychological problems," Arthur added.

Charlotte Contreras, another member of the tourist group, hails from the United States. As a psychotherapist, she found inspiration upon encountering Chinese wellness culture.

"Chinese wellness culture encompasses much ancient philosophical wisdom, which differs somewhat from modern psychological knowledge. By integrating this wisdom with the theories I'm familiar with, we can better help more patients," she said.

According to Lu, the tourists would participate in sessions based on traditional Chinese wellness culture, incorporating theories from traditional Chinese medicine, and also engage in exercises such as Tai Chi.

China's wellness industry has developed rapidly in recent years, with the country's diverse climate and geographical environment offering tourists a wide range of options.

"The well-established system of Chinese traditional wellness culture, primarily centered around traditional Chinese medicine and dietary therapy, has evolved over thousands of years and continues to attract foreign tourists who come to experience wellness in China," said Chen Bin, secretary-general of the China Tourism Commodity and Equipment Association.

"It won't be my last time in China. I'll continue to learn about traditional Chinese wellness knowledge while enjoying its beautiful natural landscapes," Arthur said.
