Review of delta app.

My original flight 3/9 was canceled from JAX to RIC via LGA and Delta rescheduled me on another flight via JFK. Then my departure from JAX to JFK was delayed so much so that my arrival into RIC was being further pushed back. I was given the option to change my flight at no cost which I opted to do but I was not able to see what seats were available. I thought at some point I would be given the option to see available seats prior to finalizing the change but that never occurred. After accepting the change I found I didn’t have a seat assignment on the departure and I was assigned a middle seat (which I despise) on the connection. A passenger should be given the option to see what seats are available before making a change. I can assure you had I known prior to accepting the change that I would have to wait to be assigned a seat at the airport and that I would only have a middle seat on the connection I would not have changed from the rescheduled flight. Then to add insult to injury I used points to sit in Delta comfort from JAX to LGA because of the length of the flight. I no longer want to use points on either leg of the flights via ATL and I sincerely hope my points will be deposited back into my account. I had aisle seats (which I prefer) on both my original flights and I’m very disappointed I don’t have them on either flight tomorrow. I apologize for such a lengthy message; I didn’t expect to have to deal with flight changes that would disrupt my trip.

Change of flight times

After several lights changes since the time I originally booked, my international layover went from 1 hour and 45 minutes to only 40 minutes. A 45 minute layover for an international connection is not enough time, especially as I am flying with a family of five, this forced asked to switch flights. In doing so, I lost the upgraded seats I initially used points for. This would not have been a big deal, but it is highly disappointing that delta would not reimburse you for the points lost due to a change on their end. This policy really needs changed. In addition, the four hour plus waiting to talk to a representative force me to try to utilize the chat function. Even though I know I was able to speak to somebody relatively quickly, I made it all the way to having new flights but the person I was talking to left the chat. Waited a while and then the screen turned out causing me to start over. OK I thought, disappointing but just a fluke, but what do you know it happened again. The second time, I am mediately typed “representative“ and then we can immediately going through the process with a third agent. At least this time all the previous chat information was still up for her to review instead of starting back from scratch. The system need some bugs worked out, it’s also very hard to read on an iPhone.

Unable to upgrade

I had an opportunity to upgrade for a flight and was traveling with another individual. On my app, the seats weren’t available, but was showing availability for who I was traveling with. I tried contacting Delta to discuss the problem and they were unsuccessful with helping and said that they couldn’t see any availability from their end and to check the website. The person that I was traveling with was able to see availability and called to request the seats since we were both traveling on the same flight together. We were told that they would give us a voluntary change since it didn’t show availability on my app. The person I was traveling with didn’t have medallion status and was able to see first class tickets available for the first leg of the international flight, but wasn’t able to upgrade to first class on the flight home. However, I was given the option to upgrade to first class on the last portion of my flight instead of the international portion. I then was told that in order to upgrade, I would have to upgrade the entire flight. I thought that was ridiculous because I didn’t have to do that going on my trip. I had regular seating and then first class for the longer portion of the trip. I should be able to upgrade regardless if it’s available on another person’s app and we are traveling together and both AREN’T MEDALLION MEMBERS. How ridiculous…

If you have the flight number:.

• Locate the "Flight Status" section on the website.
• Enter your flight number into the "Flight #" box. For example, if your flight number is 236, type "236" in the box.
• Ensure that "Delta Airlines" is selected in the Airline field.
• Click the "Track" button to view your flight's current status.

If you don't know the flight number but know the departure and arrival airports:

• Go to the "Flight Status" section.
• Choose "By Route".
• Enter the departure and arrival airports of the Delta Airlines flight you wish to check.
• Note: If you select an airport Delta Airlines does not serve, you will see an error message.

Whether you’re in it for complimentary upgrades, free checked bags or just the smug sense of superiority, there are many good reasons to pursue Delta Air Lines elite status.

Delta’s Medallion elite status works much the same as other major U.S. carriers like American and United, with spending minimums for each tier and some acronyms like MQDs.

Whether you’re a wizened old frequent flyer or are new to the game, here we’ll break down everything you need to know about Delta Medallion status and its accompanying program (while keeping the acronyms to a minimum).

Delta has four tiers of elite status: Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond.

In 2024, Delta revamped how flyers earn elite status and now uses only one qualifying metric: Medallion Qualifying Dollars (MQDs), which essentially amounts to how much you spend with Delta. This is similar to how American Airlines awards elite status. United Airlines, which is the third major U.S.-based global carrier, still grants elite status through a combination of flying and money spent.

You can earn status by earning enough MQDs within a single calendar year, and once earned you’ll keep it through the following calendar year. So if you earn Gold status in August 2024, you’ll keep it through the end of 2025. If you’re just short of reaching status before the end of the year, well, tough luck.

You can also earn lifetime status by flying at least 1 million miles as a member of SkyMiles. This starts at lifetime Gold status for reaching “only” 1 million miles. Once you earn 5 million miles, you will get an invitation to Delta 360 .

Silver Medallion

Value: $876.

How many MQDs required to earn: $5,000 MQDs.

Bonus miles earned: 40%.

Best benefits: Free baggage, free upgrades, priority check-in and boarding and Five Star status in Hertz Gold.

Gold Medallion

Value: $3,256.

You earn Delta Medallion status by earning enough Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) for each tier.In Delta’s status universe, you can’t game the system by taking several long, cheap flights (as you can on Alaska Airlines ) because you’ll need to reach the minimum number of MQDs for each tier.

How Medallion Qualification Dollars work

Delta’s new way of earning elite status simplifies this process. However, if you think a Medallion Qualification Dollar is just a dollar, Delta makes it a little more nuanced.

You can earn MQDs in a variety of ways, including:

1 MQD per $1 spent on Delta-marketed flights operated by Delta or one of its airline partners. This includes the fare and airline fees, but not taxes, fees (including government fees), basic economy and similar fares, and insurance purchases.

1 MQD per $10 spent when using the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card or the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card .

1 MQD per $20 spent when using the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card or the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card .

1 MQD per $1 spent when booking travel through Delta Vacations. The calculation  excludes taxes, fees (including government fees), basic economy and similar fares, tips, room service, other booking charges, and insurance purchases.

Terms apply.

With respect to the MQDs earned from flights and Delta Vacations, you’ll want to note the fees that are excluded so you actually know how many MQDs you’re earning. For example, if your ticket costs $500 — $100 of which are taxes and fees — you’ll earn 400 Medallion Qualification Dollars.

How to earn Delta Medallion status through credit card spending

It is possible to earn Delta Medallion status without stepping foot on an airplane, but you'll have to do a lot of spending on a Delta credit card to get there.

on American Express' website

1 MQD per $10 spent.

1 MQD per $20 spent.

People with one of the eligible MQD-earning credit cards automatically get a 2,500 MQD boost at the start of the year. So to earn entry-level Silver status on credit card spending alone, you'd have to spend $25,000 in a calendar year on the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card or $50,000 in a calendar year on the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card . All Delta Medallion elites get unlimited complimentary upgrades, complimentary preferred seats, priority check-in and priority boarding and waived baggage fees.

All Medallion tiers above Silver receive priority security lane access and priority baggage service at select airports, waived same-day confirmed fees and are eligible for upgrades as early as right after ticketing (depending on status tier) to 72 hours before departure.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown of some of the benefits:

Although complimentary seat upgrades are one of the biggest benefits of any airline's elite status, the process by which upgrades are determined can seem daunting and confusing. This is because all complimentary upgrades are essentially a lottery, with no certainties (even for travelers with Diamond Medallion status).

For example, although upgrades begin clearing for Diamond members 120 hours prior to departure as the above table describes, this only means that they get the first crack at seats that are available at that point.

More seats will open, sometimes at the last minute, and those will get assigned to Medallion members still on the upgrade waitlist in descending order of status (and fare class). In other words, the highest Medallion status members get first dibs on upgrades, but only when those upgrades are available.

So if you’re a Gold Medallion member flying from Atlanta (Delta’s home airport) to New York, for example, you’re far less likely to score an upgrade than you would be on another flight with fewer elite members.

Companions traveling with you are also eligible for complimentary upgrades, though it gets a bit convoluted. You can learn all the details on Delta’s upgrade page , but here’s the gist:

Companions must have a SkyMiles membership to be eligible for upgrades.

A companion booked on the same reservation as you will get upgraded at the highest tier of the two. For example, if you’re Platinum and your companion is Gold, you will both be eligible as Platinums.

For a companion booked on separate but linked reservations, it’s complicated — basically, these companions are unlikely to be upgraded unless they have Medallion status of their own.

For groups of three or more, it’s extremely complicated and very easy for no one in the group to be upgraded. We recommend calling Delta if you’re booking a group ticket and are curious how the upgrades will shake out.

Finally, basic economy (E) fares are not eligible for any complimentary upgrades, so think twice before booking these tickets for long-haul flights.

Choice benefits

Delta offers a unique choose-your-own benefit option for both Platinum and Diamond Medallion members. It’s a nice perk, as it lets you focus on the benefits you value most and skip the ones you’d never use.

Platinum members choose ONE of the following:

Package of four regional upgrade certificates.

20,000 bonus miles.

$200 Delta travel voucher.

Gift of Silver Medallion status to a friend.

Diamond members choose THREE of the following:

Executive membership to Delta Sky Clubs (unlimited access for self and two guests) — this option counts as three choices.

Package of as many as eight upgrade certificates (eight regional, four global, or two global and four regional).

25,000 bonus miles.

Gift of Gold Medallion status to a friend.

Partner benefits

The system for Medallion benefits on Delta’s partner airlines is so complex and inscrutable that we can’t possibly explain it all here. Delta’s own partner benefit page starts with a glossary of terms like a list of characters at the beginning of a Russian novel.

That said, in general:

Silver Medallion holders get SkyTeam Elite status, which offers a few limited benefits on most partners.

Gold, Platinum and Diamond holders get SkyTeam Elite Plus status, which offers more robust benefits like lounge access.

All Medallion holders get one extra free piece of luggage on partner flights.

Most partners offer their own combination of benefits to these two groups. If you’re unsure which airline to fly based on your Medallion status, check the partner page and compare the offered benefits.

Delta offers several helpful ways to give you a leg up on earning Medallion status (or help you get it back after lapsing).

Status matching

If you’re a frequent flyer on another program and are considering switching loyalty, Delta will match your status for three months to give you a sense of the benefits. To qualify you must:

Not have received a status match from Delta in the past three years.

Have elite status from another qualifying airline.

Be able to prove that you have this status and that you earned it from flying (not through another status match).

If approved for a status match, you’ll also be enrolled in a status challenge. Essentially, this lets you extend your status beyond the three-month trial if you’re able to hit certain the following spending milestones during the trial.

Silver: $1,250 MQDs.

Gold: $2,500 MQDs.

Platinum: $3,750 MQDs.

In fact, you can extend your Medallion status through the entire following year if you begin your status match after July 1. For example, if you begin your match (and challenge) on July 2, 2023, and meet the milestones, you’ll keep your status throughout 2024.

'Reclaim My Status'

This helpful program is essentially parental leave for airline elite status. That is, if you were a Medallion status member who had a major life event that caused you to lose your status, Delta will let you reclaim your previous status in a similar way to the matching program above.

To qualify, you must be able to provide documentation of the life event, but Delta claims that “all life events will be considered.”

If approved, Delta will reinstate your former status for three months and give you the opportunity to extend your reclaimed status through the following year in the same manner as the status challenge above. So, you should only apply for the program when you’re ready (and planning) to start flying again.

Rollover Medallion Qualification Miles allowed in 2024

Previously, Delta used a combination of MQDs, Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) and Medallion Qualifying Segments (MQSs) to determine elite status, but starting in 2024, Delta only uses MQDs.

To ensure that all the elites who earned a ton of MQMs in 2023 don’t go unrecognized, Delta is permitting a one-time conversion of any MQMs earned in 2023 towards 2024 status. If you happen to be an elite who has a rollover balance of 100,000 MQMs or more, you can choose to extend your 2024 elite status by one year for each 100,000 rollover MQMs.

Delta flyers have until Dec. 31, 2024 to decide what they want to do.

Is Delta Medallion status worth it?

Delta’s Medallion elite program is great for travelers who frequently fly on Delta and its partners, as it can provide money-saving and comfort-improving benefits to all Medallion holders. Just realize that — to save money — you'll have to spend money. And for most status tiers, that means spending a lot of it.

Sure, roughly $14,000 in value from Diamond status is great, but you'll only get it by spending an estimated $25,000 with Delta. Be realistic about what you'll actually spend on Delta flights ahead of your quest to become a Delta Medallion member.

For what it's worth, Delta tends to rank somewhere in the middle among all the other major airline elite status programs. Delta's top-tier Diamond Medallion status is not nearly as valuable as the boffo $29,000 that NerdWallet estimates American's Executive Platinum status is worth. But, it takes an estimated $50,00 to earn American's top-tier elite status, so it might not net out to be all that worth it.

Meanwhile, the Delta Diamond Medallion perk's are more valuable than those you might expect to get in the Alaska 100K elite status tier, which are worth just $8,300.

It's almost always a good idea to sign up for the Delta SkyMiles program , even if you're just taking the occasional flight, considering it's free to join. If you fly frequently and live near a Delta hub (like its headquarters in Atlanta), pledging allegiance to one airline can be more worthwhile than chasing the lowest fare deals. Especially if you can earn elite status in the long run and take advantage of its value. Even the lowest tier of Delta Medallion status, Silver Medallion, can offer hundreds of dollars in value by saving you on Delta checked bag fees , netting you Delta priority boarding and more.

Delta Medallion status: What it is and how to earn it

I f you're a regular traveler, holding elite status with a major airline like Delta Air Lines can make your journeys more comfortable and rewarding.

However, deciding which airline loyalty program makes the most sense for you can be difficult, given the variations between the carriers regarding complimentary upgrades, bonus points or miles, and other valuable perks.

Also, is it even worth pursuing elite status at all?

This guide will dive into one of the major legacy programs and explain how its status tiers work, how to earn them through both travel and non-travel expenses, and ultimately if striving for elite status in it is even worth the effort.

Here is everything you need to know about elite status in the Delta SkyMiles program.

Earning Medallion status in 2024

Before getting into the details, it's important to highlight the recent major news related to Delta status.

Earlier this fall, Delta announced that it was making it significantly harder to earn Medallion status in 2024. Rather than use a combination of spending and flying, your qualification progress next year will be entirely based on how many Medallion Qualification Dollars you earn. Gone are Medallion Qualification Miles and Medallion Qualification Segments.

The public reaction was so immediately negative that Delta has softened some of the changes (for 2024, at least), though it will still be harder to earn Medallion status in 2024 than it was in 2023.

What is Delta Medallion status?

Delta gives the most loyal of its more than 100 million SkyMiles members elite status each year, rewarding them with various benefits to make their travel more comfortable and easier.

There are four published tiers of elite status:

• Silver Medallion
• Gold Medallion
• Platinum Medallion
• Diamond Medallion

Delta also has an invite-only status tier called Delta 360 , though the exact qualification criteria for it are not public. However, you can receive complimentary annual Delta 360 status by reaching 5 million lifetime miles flown.

In 2023, Medallion status is earned through a combination of two metrics:

• How far SkyMiles members fly on Delta or its partner airlines each calendar year (MQMs) or how many individual flights they take (MQSs)
• How much SkyMiles members spend each calendar year (MQDs)

Through Dec. 31, 2023, cardmembers of select Delta American Express cards (discussed below) are exempt from the MQD requirements when they reach certain spending thresholds on those cards.

However, starting Jan. 1, 2024, this perk will disappear, as will MQMs and MQSs. Medallion status will only be measured by MQDs.

You earn the status as soon as you reach the above requirements and hold it for that calendar year through January after the end of the following calendar year. So, if you reach the status requirements in June 2024, you will hold the status through Jan. 31, 2026.

Status levels reset every year in January, so you must keep earning the requirements every year to maintain your status.

How to qualify for Delta Medallion status

Until Dec 31. 2023, SkyMiles status is earned as follows:

• Silver Medallion : SkyMiles members who have earned 25,000 MQMs or 30 MQSs and 3,000 MQDs
• Gold Medallion : SkyMiles members who have earned 50,000 MQMs or 60 MQSs and 8,000 MQDs
• Platinum Medallion : SkyMiles members who have earned 75,000 MQMs or 100 MQSs and 12,000 MQDs
• Diamond Medallion : SkyMiles members who have earned 125,000 MQMs or 140 MQSs and 20,000 MQDs

In order to waive the MQD requirements for Silver Medallion, Gold Medallion and Platinum Medallion status, travelers could spend $25,000 in the 2023 calendar year on the following Delta cards:

• Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card
• Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card
• Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card
• Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card

However, earning a waiver for the Diamond Medallion MQD requirements means spending a whopping $250,000 in a calendar year.

Starting Jan. 1, 2024, the waiver will no longer be in effect. Instead, Delta will only use MQDs as criteria for qualification — and the thresholds are increasing significantly from the 2023 levels.

• Silver Medallion : SkyMiles members who have earned 5,000 MQDs
• Gold Medallion : SkyMiles members who have earned 10,000 MQDs
• Platinum Medallion : SkyMiles members who have earned 15,000 MQDs
• Diamond Medallion : SkyMiles members who have earned 28,000 MQDs

Delta Medallion status levels and benefits

Here are some key benefits of each of Delta's status tiers.

SkyMiles Silver Medallion

This is the entry tier in Delta's program, and you'll receive benefits like:

• Complimentary first-class upgrades on domestic and short-haul international flights from 24 hours before departure
• Upgrades to Comfort+ within 24 hours of departure
• Priority boarding and check-in
• One complimentary checked bag
• 7 miles per dollar spent

SkyMiles Gold Medallion

Delta's mid-tier status includes some higher priority and enhanced perks, including:

• Complimentary first-class upgrades on domestic and short-haul international flights from three days before departure
• Upgrades to Comfort+ within three days of departure
• Waived same-day confirmed changes
• Two complimentary checked bags
• 8 miles per dollar spent

SkyMiles Platinum Medallion

In addition to the previously mentioned Silver Medallion and Gold Medallion perks, you'll get the following:

• Complimentary first-class upgrades on domestic flights and short-haul international flights from five days before departure
• Upgrades to Comfort+ at the time of booking
• Three complimentary checked bags
• Your pick of a Choice Benefit
• 9 miles per dollar spent

SkyMiles Diamond Medallion

You'll get everything detailed above, plus some even better perks (discussed in more detail below):

• Three additional Choice Benefit options
• Complimentary Clear membership
• Higher upgrade priority
• 11 miles per dollar spent

Can a credit card help earn Delta status?

Until Jan. 1, 2024, SkyMiles members can earn bonus MQMs on the following cards:

• Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card : Earn 15,000 MQMs for every $30,000 you spend on the card (up to a total of 60,000 MQMs after spending $120,000) through Dec. 31, 2023.
• Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card : Earn 15,000 MQMs for every $30,000 you spend on the card (up to a total of 60,000 MQMs after spending $120,000) through Dec. 31, 2023.
• Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card : Earn 10,000 MQMs when you spend $25,000 on the card in a calendar year, and earn another 10,000 MQMs when you spend $50,000 in a calendar year through Dec. 31, 2023.
• Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card : Earn 10,000 MQMs when you spend $25,000 on the card in a calendar year, and earn another 10,000 MQMs when you spend $50,000 in a calendar year through Dec. 31, 2023.

As mentioned earlier, the above cardholders will be exempt from the MQD requirements for Silver Medallion, Gold Medallion and Platinum Medallion status when they spend $25,000 on the card in a calendar year — though you must spend $250,000 to enjoy the MQD waiver for Diamond Medallion status.

Both the MQD waiver and the bonus MQMs will no longer be available starting Jan. 1, 2024. Instead, to make it easier to earn elite status in 2024, Delta will give eligible frequent flyers who are also cobranded credit card holders a head start on the 2024 MQD metrics, with a boost of 2,500 MQDs toward status qualification at the start of the 2024 year.

The MQD head start is awarded per card, so you'll enjoy more than one 2,500 MQD boost if you have multiple primary eligible cards. Additionally, you'll be able to enjoy bonus MQDs based on everyday spending on these cards.

Specifically, the Delta SkyMiles Reserve Amex and the Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business Amex will accrue 1 MQD for every $10 spent. Meanwhile, both the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Amex and the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business Amex will accrue 1 MQD for every $20 spent.

There is no limit to how many MQDs you can earn from credit card spending, so you could potentially earn elite status just from credit card spending. However, that's a ton of money to spend, especially when there are better options for your everyday purchases.

It's also a major step back from the current requirements. Depending on which card you use, that $25,000 in spend that previously granted an MQD waiver will only turn into either 1,250 or 2,500 MQDs in 2024 — not even enough to put you halfway to entry-level Silver Medallion status. Even if you're a big spender who used to hit the $250,000 MQD waiver, that spending will now translate into 12,500 or 25,000 MQDs.

Is Delta Medallion status worth it?

If you earned Delta elite status in 2023, it's valid through Jan. 31, 2025. If you qualify in 2024, your status will last until Jan. 31, 2026.

It's critical to think about how much you'll be traveling in the future to decide if Medallion status is worth it. If you push hard to reach Diamond Medallion, for example, the valuable perks outlined above apply only when traveling. With the higher MDQ requirements in 2024, you would need to spend a significant amount of money with the airline or on a cobranded credit card to earn this top-tier status, so you must also ensure you are traveling enough to enjoy it.

That said, many of you may wind up within striking distance of the next tier, so consider whether the benefits are worth pushing for. There's no sense in going out of your way for perks that don't matter to you. Pursuing elite status with an airline you can't feasibly fly regularly is a fool's errand. Consider Delta's service from your home airport(s) and how easy it is to reach your desired destination.

This hobby has many trade-offs, and one of the most common is deciding whether to use your preferred airline or hotel chain when it's not the most convenient or cheapest. Would you book a one-stop Delta flight if Southwest had a cheaper nonstop option? If the answer is no, it may not be worth going out of your way to earn Delta elite status (or any elite status, for that matter).

The final consideration involves travel rewards credit cards . Many airline cobranded cards offer perks that mirror what you'd enjoy as an elite member. For example, the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card includes a free checked bag, priority boarding and a 20% inflight discount. The card has an introductory annual fee of $0 for the first year, then $99 (see rates and fees ).

Meanwhile, the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card provides complimentary Sky Club access when flying Delta along with complimentary upgrades (behind all Medallion members) and an annual companion certificate (valid for round-trip domestic flights in economy, Comfort+ or first class). If you can pay a flat annual fee for one of these cards and gain access to perks that matter to you without going out of your way to earn elite status, that may be a good plan.

Note: Effective Feb. 1, 2025, Reserve cardmembers will receive 15 visits per year to the Delta Sky Club; to earn an unlimited number of visits each year starting on Feb. 1, 2025, the total eligible purchases on the card must equal $75,000 or more between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2024, and each calendar year thereafter.

Bottom line

Earning airline elite status carries an array of perks that can make your entire travel experience more comfortable.

However, not all levels with all carriers are created equally, so analyzing which elite status program best aligns with your typical travel patterns and what you value most as a traveler is critical. Given the recent negative SkyMiles changes, it is harder than ever to earn elite status unless you are spending considerable amounts of money, either with the airline, on cobranded credit cards or a combination of the two.
