The 18 Cheapest Places to Travel in 2022

Plan an exciting vacation without spending an arm and a leg.

cheapest country to travel 2022

Looking to catch a cheap flight this year? Kayak , one of the world's leading travel search engines, shared with Travel + Leisure a list of the cheapest places to travel this year.

To determine the most wallet-friendly destinations, Kayak analyzed the searches for flights from Nov. 20, 2020, through Nov. 19, 2021, for travel between Jan. 1, 2022, and June 30, 2022. Kayak then considered the top 100 most-clicked destinations with the lowest average flight price, excluding outliers based on criteria such as travel restrictions and security concerns.

Fly against the grain and get rewarded with major savings.

Unsurprisingly, Mexico makes the list of the cheapest places to travel in 2022. The country has long ranked as an affordable and easy-to-reach destination for many Americans; reasonably priced direct flights are abundant.

Within Mexico, San José del Cabo (in Baja California Sur), Puerto Vallarta, and Cancún come out on top as the cheapest places to fly, with January being the most affordable month to visit for each. Fortunately, January is nothing short of glorious in each of these beachy destinations — warm, balmy, and filled with rich colors, textures, and flavors to beat the winter blues.

Searching for a city break instead of a beach retreat? Mexico City, with its rich Aztec heritage and generous smattering of museums, is another affordable option in Mexico. May is the cheapest month to book a flight there.

Chicago, Illinois

Who wants to visit Chicago in winter? You will, once you see the rock-bottom prices you can score in January and all there is to do in this Midwest winter wonderland. Spend an afternoon on the Maggie Daley Park Ice Skating Ribbon, then warm up with a slice of deep-dish pizza.

Colombia is a beloved travel destination for its rich history, vibrant culture, and mouthwatering food. It's also well priced against what many Americans are used to paying for, say, a fresh arepa and cup of Colombian coffee.

February is the least expensive month to fly to the country's capital, Bogotá. The weather here is chilly, but not too cold to stroll the painstakingly maintained Bogotá Botanical Garden, which dates back to 1955 and is filled with almost 20,000 plants (and costs just over $1 USD to enter).

In January, head to Cartagena, a port city on the country's Caribbean coast. You don't have to spend much to enjoy your time here — simply walking the picturesque streets is enough for most visitors.

Nashville, Tennessee

There's a reason bachelorette parties and reunions of every sort flock in droves to the Music City — it's not hard to have a boot-scootin' time on a budget. Mural-hopping is free, hot chicken will only set you back a few bucks, and there's lots of live music to be heard (free of cover charge) along Honky Tonk Highway . January is the cheapest month to book.

New York City, New York

New York City isn't known for being a cheap destination, but go in January and you'll get the best prices they've got. The city never sleeps, but it does slow down during the cold winter months — the perfect time for you to swoop in and take advantage of the decreased demand for flights and hotel rooms. Plus, there are plenty of free things to do in New York City , too.

Mexico isn't our only neighboring country with deals aplenty — Canada also makes for an easy getaway, with well-priced flights widely available from most of the U.S.

In Montréal, Quebec, the must-try food is the steamé — the city's take on a hot dog — served steamed in a side-loading bun (which is also steamed). It's the perfect food to gobble up during freezing February, when the flights are cheapest. Best of all, each delicious (and filling) hot dog will only set you back a couple of dollars.

February is also the cheapest month to fly to Toronto, Ontario. The weather may make you leery, but don't let it: During February, the annual installation of art and lights, known as the Toronto Light Festival (totally free), takes place in the walkable and historic Distillery District. It's also a good time for The Bentway Skate Trail under the Gardiner Expressway overpass, which will set you back only $5.

And while Vancouver, British Columbia, is gorgeous in the summertime, January is the cheapest month to fly there. Take the ferry for an affordable "tour" of the city from the water.

Atlanta, Georgia

Jackson Vance/Travel + Leisure

Atlanta has all the big-city perks at prices far more wallet-friendly than most of its counterparts. Splurge on a SkyView Ferris wheel ride for views of Centennial Olympic Park and beyond, and go in January for the lowest possible prices. There are lots of things to do in Atlanta during this time of year, from visiting the marine animals at the Georgia Aquarium to learning about local history at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights.

Baltimore, Maryland

Head to Charm City this year to keep costs low and still have a memorable travel experience. Chilly January may be the cheapest month to visit, but luckily, you can still check out places like the Rawlings Conservatory and Botanic Gardens ($5 donation encouraged) in the urban oasis of Druid Hill Park.

San José, Costa Rica

The capital and largest city of Costa Rica, San José is a must-visit for any intrepid traveler. Expect Victorian mansions, nightlife in El Pueblo, lots of culture, and surrounding historic coffee plantations.

Check out the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum for a glimpse into what it might look like to have an unlimited jewelry budget. Admission is $15 for non-residents, but offers access to more than 1,500 gold objects and artifacts. Head to San José in May for the cheapest airfare to this lively (and affordable) city.

Dallas, Texas

This year, visit Dallas outside of Cowboys football season — like in January, when prices are at their lowest. During this time, you can expect more reasonable rates, but still get in on the sports action by catching a home game for the Mavericks (basketball) or the Stars (hockey).

Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be, but if you prefer to devote the majority of your dollars to slots and shows rather than airfare and accommodations, go in January. Just don't expect hot temps, as even the desert gets cold in the winter. Here are some more tips to keep in mind and mistakes to avoid on your next trip to Sin City.

Panama City, Panama

Panama City, the capital of Panama, is an impressively modern Central American destination framed by the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Panama Canal on another — best viewable from the Miraflores Locks. Visit in January for great flight deals, and don't miss the cobblestone streets of historic Casco Viejo.

Tampa, Florida

Florida as a destination is hotter than ever, but Tampa isn't as inundated with crowds as the state's other major cities — plus, its location on the western coast promises gorgeous sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico. Go in January for a good deal, warm (but not sweltering) temps, and plenty of sunshine.

Hamilton, Bermuda

If January's chill has you dreaming of pink-sand beaches, you're in luck, as it's a great month to visit Bermuda. Fly into Hamilton and stroll Front Street for a peek at the pastel buildings that are iconic to this glitzy British island territory, but stick to window-shopping if you want to keep your trip cheap. Biking and beach-hopping are the name of the game here.

Boston, Massachusetts

January may be the cheapest month to fly to Boston, but it's not the best season for strolling its idyllic Common or touring the Freedom Trail. Luckily, many stops along the historic route are indoors — and cheap (like the Paul Revere House, which is just $6 per adult).

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is another popular destination for American travelers. January is the least expensive month to visit the two most affordable cities to fly into: Santo Domingo and Punta Cana.

Though Santo Domingo is the country's capital, it doesn't have to be an expensive visit. Take in the architecture that dates back to the late 1400s and stroll the Colonial Zone for a memorable (and free) experience.

Punta Cana, on the other hand, is known as a tourist hot spot with plenty of resorts (and ways to spend lots of money). However, some of life's greatest treasures — like sandy beaches and waterfall hikes — are as free in Punta Cana as they are anywhere else.

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

You don't need a passport to fly to St. Thomas, but you'll have a hard time believing this jaw-dropping, colorful island is technically U.S. soil. Make sure to visit Magens Bay, climb the 99 Steps in Charlotte Amalie, and marvel at the sheer blueness of the water surrounding this popular cruise ship port. Go in January for the best flight prices; you'll be glad for the savings when you see what accommodations cost on this luxurious island.

Denver, Colorado

Denver has a ton to do, even in January, which is the cheapest month to visit. Hitting the slopes is hard to do at a discount (unless you go in the summer to hike instead of ski), but at least you'll save money on airfare if you visit Denver during this snowy month.

You can rough it and explore the country for dirt cheap by staying in dorms, buying local food and alcohol, and staying away from the most popular cities.

Vietnam is a a food lover’s dream destination for authentic Vietnamese street food and local cuisine. cheapest country to travel 2022

Check out my Ultimate Travel Guide to Phuket for awesome travel ideas for southern Thailand. The activities around Thailand are cheap too, and I found a lot of package deals through hostels that let you see multiple destinations on a single trip, giving you more bang for your buck.

6. Philippines – $35/Day

cheapest country to travel 2022

The Philippines is another obvious destination for budget backpackers and travel bucket lists with hundreds of tropical islands, world class dive sites, and hidden gems to explore. Depending on where you fly from, getting to the Philippines is usually the most expensive part. There are many different islands to choose from and each has different activities, sights, and associated costs. Each island has their own luxury and affordable sections so you can locate money saving accommodations or splurge anywhere you go.

The island archipelago offers less hostel choices than other parts of Southeast Asia, but some of my favorite hostels I have ever stayed in are in the Philippines! The cheapest way to get to the Philippines is by connecting through a major airport like Seoul, South Korea or Singapore rather than trying to find a direct flight.

cheapest country to travel 2022

You can also save money by exploring nearby islands instead of travelling across the entire country. Some islands have ferries and other forms of transportation, that can offer budget friendly alternatives to flying.

Accommodation : $7-$13 per day in a hostel. Transportation : $10-$15 moped day rental, (can vary depending on bike condition, renter, and bargaining skills). 7. India – $20/Day

cheapest country to travel 2022

India is a vast country with many different areas that offer varying costs and expenses, but for predominantly low costs. Southern regions offer the best budget friendly accommodations and transportation with hostels and rooms as low as $3 for a basic room. Keep in mind that showering is commonly done using buckets of heated water. and cheaper accommodations will not be privy to any kind of amenity luxuries. Book every activity yourself to save money otherwise using agents, booking sites, and tour companies will add up.

Accommodation : $3-$6 per day in communal guesthouses. Transportation : $1-$3 per day for local bus and train tickets, and $8-$30 for intercity transportation. Domestic flights start around $30. Food : $3-$6 per day. SIM card and data : $3 for 1.5GB every 30 days.
8. China – $25/Day

cheapest country to travel 2022

Traveling to China saved my budget when I flew around the world! It gave me the chance to recuperate my savings while enjoying relaxation, food, and activities without stressing about costs.

Choose smaller or lesser explored cities instead of going to Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong for better cost savings and authentic experiences. I travelled to Xian, Chong Qing, and Cheng du which are relatively small for China but still enormous cities. Affordable provinces you should check out include Guangxi, Sichuan, and Dali.

Many cities in China have multiple ride share, bike rentals, and inner-city bus options that only cost a few dollars. Large tourist cities like Beijing and Shanghai can be done on a budget by staying at hostels and eating street food. The most expensive costs in China is the domestic transportation on bullet trains and airfare between provinces. Domestics travel can run you upwards of $20 per train ticket, but costs can be reduced by spending more time traveling inside each province on local trains , sourcing buses, or opportune domestic flights.

Accommodation : $5-$10 per day in a hostel. Transportation : $1-$3 for ride share, bicycle rental, and inner-city buses and trains. $10-$30 intercity trains, buses, and domestic flights. Food : $4-$10 per day. SIM card and data : $15 for 2GB every 30 days. Download a VPN to bypass firewalls and stay connected with your social media and Google!
NORTH AMERICA
9. Mexico – $40 to $60/Day

cheapest country to travel 2022

One time I spent a week in Mexico at an all inclusive resort, went on multiple dive trips, and explored ancient Mayan ruins for less than $60 per day . I know if you want to do Mexico on a budget there are ways to save even more money, while still doing adventure activities crossing items off of your travel bucket list.

A guaranteed way to save money traveling to Mexico is to stay away from tourist capitals like Cancun and Play del Carmen! Mexico is a large country with cities that cater to budget backpacker lifestyles including Oaxaca, Tulum, and Sayulita. The reputation of Mexico for being dangerous for tourists is concentrated to specific areas, and there are many other safe destinations to explore around the country.

cheapest country to travel 2022

Authentic street tacos, enchiladas, and tequila can be enjoyed for less than $3, expeditions to Mayan ruins or exotic cenotes for less than $20, and stunning white sand beaches outside of hostels and resorts for FREE!

If you are traveling to Cancun or other tourists capitals grab an all inclusive Groupon deal that can cover your accommodation, food, drinks, and sometimes even airfare!

Accommodation: $8-$15 per day in hostels. All inclusive resorts start at $50 per day, and there are many opportunities for work stays elsewhere. Transportation: $3-$5 using public buses, private drivers, and taxis. Food: $8-$15 per day. Some hostels include breakfast. SIM card and data: $10 for 2GB every 30 days.
10. Costa Rica – $60/Day

cheapest country to travel 2022

Costa Rica offers some of the most interesting wildlife, nature adventures, and luxury experiences for affordable rates across either of the American continents and the world! You can:

  • Hike to volcanos, waterfalls, and beaches.
  • Explore the rainforests to see sloths, toucans, and jaguars.
  • Photograph river crocodiles from a kayak or baby sea turtles hatching on a beach.
  • Relax in Arenal volcano hot springs while meditating inside ethereal cloud forests.
  • Ride horseback through coffee plantations and enjoy magical butterfly pavilions.
  • Enjoy tropical shave ice, fresh bananas, coconuts, pineapples, and star fruit on beaches on both sides of the country.

The biggest expense in Costa Rica is the activities you choose to do and the transportation to get there. Some destinations require river ferries, while most can be accessed by bus. Costa Rica is known for illustrious adventures because where else can you kayak with crocodiles, river raft with snakes, snorkel with pufferfish, and zipline through clouds?

Plan ahead of time and save up a chunk of adventure money because I assure you it will be well worth the extra splurge.

Accommodation : $15-$30 per day in a hostel. Transportation : $15-$30 per day. Food : $7-$15 per day. Some hostels include breakfast. SIM card and data : $2 for 1GB every 30 days.
11. Cuba – $30/Day

cheapest country to travel 2022

Cuba is an island paradise with cars and architecture that looks preserved out of a 1950’s time capsule. This island nation has been cut off from American tourists for almost 50 years and has recently been reopened, encouraging many young travelers to explore the island. You can get awesome deals in Cuba, compared to other nearby Caribbean destinations.

Food and transportation may cost you less than $10 per day eating local and using public transportation. Hotels cost $37 and hostels will save you about half of that! You can adventure around the island on mopeds, beach hop, and make sure you get an authentic Cuban cigar to smoke while you are there.

Accommodation : $15-$20 per day in a hostel. Transportation : $10 on public transportation. Food : $10 per day. SIM card and data : $25 for 2.5GB every 30 days (EXPENSIVE), but you can find cheaper prepaid plans that use preloaded minutes.
12. Puerto Rico – $70/Day

cheapest country to travel 2022

Puerto Rico is the most expensive destination I have included on this list, but it is on here because of outreagelosly cheap airfare usually associated with flights from the USA.

Expect to spend about $70 per day in Puerto Rico because hotel accommodations start at $45 and food will cost you about $30 for all three meals. You can save money by eating local and cooking meals with ingredients purchased from local markets. Domestic transportation is cheap, and the island is small so many sights can be walked or biked to. Be mindful of hurricane season and periods of distress when storms damage the island’s limited power grid and resources.

Accommodation : $30-$40 per day in a hostel or hotel. Transportation : $14 for local transit tickets. Food : $30 per day. SIM card and data : $12 for 3GB every 30 days.
SOUTH AMERICA

South America is NEXT on my travel bucket list , and when I go I want to make the most out of my money by spending the most amount of time in each country. I plan on saving money by going to destinations known for amazing food, hikes, culture, and affordable activities.

13. Guatemala – $38/Day

cheapest country to travel 2022

Guatemala has long been on my travel wish list because of its unique volcanos, inland lakes, ancient ruins, lush jungles, and stunning architecture in historic colonial cities. Local street foods are delicious and can be as cheap as $3 for a full meal!

The best way to save money in Guatemala is by staying outside of Antigua and large city centers. Local settings are always going to be your best friend when budget backpacking as long as there is adequate return transportation. Guatemala’s transportation system consists of outfitted buses that can be risky and confusing. My best tactic for situations involving crazy travel is to watch and replicate what the locals are doing , because most of the time they are going in the same direction you are trying to go too.

Accommodation : $10-$15 per day in a hostel. Transportation : $1-$3 for inner-city buses and $5-$10 for intercity buses. Food : $10-$15 per day. Some hostels include breakfast. SIM card and data : $13 for 2GB every 30 days.
14. Nicaragua – $35/Day

cheapest country to travel 2022

Nicaragua is very cheap compared to its Central American neighbors like Costa Rica and Panama. The country offers similar features like volcanoes, hot springs, rainforests, wildlife, and native American cultures. Nicaragua has been nicknamed the next Costa Rica , and it is only a matter of time before its prices increase to match its neighbors in coming years.

The small nation has oceans on its east and west borders great for surfing, hiking, and diving. The country is filled with ancient Mayan and Aztec ruins, stunning beaches, and dense rainforests. Hostels are dispersed around the country so you can easily find accommodations journeying through the mountains.

Be forewarned , Nicaragua does have unfortunate safety concerns and the country experiences intermittent periods of unrest so stay up to date on the official advisory site , before going.

Accommodation : $5-$15 per day in a hostel. Transportation : $3-$5 per day for inner-city bus rides, or $8-$15 for intercity buses. Food : $6-$10 per day. Some hostels include breakfast. SIM card and data : $12 for 1GB every 30 days.
15. Columbia – $35/Day

cheapest country to travel 2022

I have heard so many good things about traveler’s adventure backpacking Columbia in recent years that I had to add it to my South American bucket list. The country has historically been quite dangerous with reputations of drugs, human trafficking, and high crime rates. Harsh times seem to be changing and Columbia is rapidly transforming into a popular and affordable backpacker destination and global contributor.

The country is full of historical sites, colonial architecture, local lore, legends, and nature. Columbia sits along the Amazon and offers quite the repertoire of jungle adventure tours for nature enthusiasts or intrepid explorers. Diving is supposedly some of the best in the region , and splurging will be easy considering food and other travel expenses are so affordable.

Accommodation : $8-$12 per day in a hostel. Transportation : $1-$3 per day for inner-city buses and $10-$50 for intercity buses. Check for cheap domestic flight rates! Food : $10-$15 per day. Some hostels include breakfast. SIM card and data : $13 for 2GB every 30 days.
16. Greece – $30/Day

cheapest country to travel 2022

Greece is one of those places in the world that is way cheaper than you would think. Traveling to Greece on my around the world tour saved my budget from total collapse after Italy’s gelato escapade broke my bank. Street food around the country is almost always less than $10 and transportation on public transit it incredibly affordable.

I stayed in Airbnbs near public transit so getting around was easy and stress free. If you travel to Greece in peak tourist weeks from July to August, you may experience increased prices and crowds. Plan your trip a few weeks earlier or later to get the best prices on flights, accommodation, authentic experiences, and more tolerable weather.

Walking tours and site entries are fairly priced, but if you plan on island hopping get ready to start spending money. It can be more affordable splitting costs in groups to minimize transfer costs between destinations. Aegean airlines is my go to Grecian airline, and you are likely to find domestic flight deals, but if all else fails you know Ryan Air is my girl!

Accommodation : $10-$15 per day in a hostel. Transportation : $10-$15 for car rental split between group. $30 daily moped rental. $10-$20 island ferry tickets. Food : $10-$15 per day. SIM card and data : $12 for 2GB every 30 days.
17. Italy – $40

cheapest country to travel 2022

Ok I know what you are thinking, that Italy cannot be on a list of the cheapest travel destinations. Except you would be completely wrong, because I know for a FACT you can visit Italy for very cheap, even with gelato escapades after every meal! I travelled through Italy on a budget of less than $30 per day, but to do that you are going to need EXTREME self control to stick to your savings tactics.

I am telling you! You NEED to budget for gelato! Not one, not two, but four times a day! It is so good in every city in Italy, and the perfect treat after any hot day of sight seeing around cities. There are so many flavors you have never heard of and it completes every meal.

cheapest country to travel 2022

The largest expenses you will find in Italy are food, gelato, train transit, and accommodations. The Airbnb and hostels across Italy are accessible, relatively cheap, and they are perfect for small groups to split. Trains are also affordable and will take you all over the country.

Accommodation : $15-$20 per day in a hostel. Transportation : $10-$20. Food : $5-$15 not including gelato. SIM card and data : $5 for 5GB every 30 days.
18. Romania – $33/Day

cheapest country to travel 2022

Romania is Dracula territory and definitely off the beaten path of most European backpacking trips. The country offers many small towns and unknown activities that are free or extremely cheap!

Romania is a great place for sightseeing through medieval villages and historical architecture lining cobble stone streets. There are many free walking tours in popular cities. Hostels are usually less than $15 per day and there is delicious fresh produce at all local markets.

Accommodation : $10-$15 per day in a hostel. Transportation : $5-$10 for daily bus or train tickets. Food : $10-$15 per day by cooking some meals. SIM card and data : $6 for 3GB every 30 days.
19. Georgia – $30/Day

cheapest country to travel 2022

How many people have you heard going to Georgia on a European trip? Probably not that many, but it is an absolutely beautiful and affordable destination . Georgia has one of the most lenient entry requirements and you will likely be able to stay for up to a year without a visa!

Georgia is known for its wine, historic towns, medieval lore, and mountain hikes. You could easily entertain yourself for an extended period of time in this country exploring monasteries, local cuisine, and wild nature. Hitchhiking for short distances is also a popular method of transportation if you want to save bus and train fares.

Accommodation : $5-$15 per night in a hostel. Transportation : $3-$5 for daily bus or train tickets. Food : $10-$15 per day. Some hostels include breakfast. SIM card and data : $3 for 1GB every 30 days.
20. Croatia – $40/Day

cheapest country to travel 2022

A lake and waterfall lovers paradise can be found on the stunning turquoise banks of Croatia. This country is known for its parties, year round sunshine, and crystal clear waters. There are countless boat and beach parties around the hundreds of islands surrounding the country’s coast.

Traveling to Croatia is similar to Greece where you will find cheap food, accommodations, and transportation with the greatest associated costs with island transfers. Traveling outside of the peak season is the best thing you can do for your photography and experience as this is a very popular summer destination.

Accommodation : $12-$16 per night in a hostel. Transportation : $12-$15 for car rental split between group. $10-$15 daily ferry tickets. Food : $10-$15 per day. Some hostels include breakfast. SIM card and data : $8 for 2GB every 30 days.
21. Estonia – $40/Day

cheapest country to travel 2022

Estonia is the perfect destination for adventure traveler’s that love hiking, national parks, and exploring nature. Over 53% of the country is covered by dense forests with many hiking trails that are either free or very affordable. Small towns across the country are great for biking, walking, or short rides lowering the overall cost of getting around.

Accommodations are cheaper in large cities so it is probably a good idea to base yourself there and do day trips to smaller towns.

Accommodation : $10-$12 per night in a hostel. Transportation : $3-$6 for daily train tickets. $10-$15 for intercity train tickets. Food : $10-$15 per day. Some hostels include breakfast. SIM card and data : $7 Baltic SIM card for 3GB every 30 days.

cheapest country to travel 2022

The land of a thousand hot air balloons! Turkey is an amazing travel destination and should be on everyone’s bucket list. Hot air balloons rise every single morning in Cappadocia city in central Turkey for about 90 minutes so you can see them any time of the year!

Note that hot air balloon rides will run you almost $300, but watching is for FREE!

Traveling around Turkey can be quite costly so plan your tip by grouping nearby activities you want to do to minimize expenses. Take overnight buses to save you accommodation costs and time traveling between destinations. Food in Turkey is always cheap and delicious.

Accommodation : $5-$15 per day in a hostel. Transportation : $1-$3 for taxi ride, and $30-$60 for overnight buses. Food : $10-$15 per day. Some hostels include breakfast. SIM card and data : $8 for 2GB every 30 days.
23. Egypt – $35/Day

cheapest country to travel 2022

Egypt is a classic travel destination with thousands of years of Mediterranean history, culture, archaeology, and ruins to explore. Hostels and overnight buses between cities can start as cheap as $5 per night! Foreign perceptions often highlight safety dangers of the country, but most of Egypt is free from any of those hazards.

Street foods around Egypt are to die for, an even better reason to stay away from the more expensive western chain restaurants. You can literally buy bread from street vendors for 5 cents , making stuffed sandwiches and hummus dishes often less than $2!

Accommodation : $4-$8 per day in a hostel. Transportation : $5 overnight intercity buses. $10-$80 train tickets. Food : $10-$15 per day. Some hostels include breakfast. SIM card and data : $12 for 5GB every 30 days.
24. South Africa – $40/Day

cheapest country to travel 2022

If you can time your travels to South Africa outside of periods of unrest, water shortages, or humanitarian crises, then you can do it for a reasonable price. Make sure to research the area around the hostel or hotel accommodation you are reserving to be fully aware of potentially dangerous situations.

To save money on food, cook your own using accommodation amenities and buying ingredients at local grocery stores. Public transportation is concentrated inside major city centers and traveling outside of these areas will face some limitations. The best and cheapest way to travel around the country is by renting a car and sharing it with a small group . Again make sure you understand where it is safe to stop and places you should avoid.

Accommodation : $12-$15 per day in a hostel. Transportation : $9 per day for car rental split between 4 people. Food : $12-$15 per day by cooking meals. SIM card and data : $35 for 1GB every 30 days.
25. Namibia

cheapest country to travel 2022

Namibia on Africa’s southeastern coast is often marketed toward luxury travelers, but it can still be explored on a reasonable budget. This country is home to one of the world’s biggest deserts, huge sand dunes, and of course Africa’s charismatic wildlife.

Visiting Etosha National Park is one of the best places to see the endangered black rhinoceros, which supports a healthy population. You can see cheetahs, giraffes, hyenas, zebra, kudus, and wildebeest. The country is sparsely populated and you will be able to have more intimate adventurers with wildlife and the African scenery.

Camp at government campsites instead of luxury lodges to save more than $150. The best option for transportation is to rent a 4×4 vehicle split between a small group, because other transportation is very limited. Make use of communal kitchens and accommodation amenities to save money on meals.

Accommodation : $8-$15 per night at government campsites. Transportation : $15-$18 per day for vehicle split between 4 people. Food : $12-$15 per day by cooking some meals. SIM card and data : $16 for 1.5GB every 60 days.

Where are the cheapest places to travel in 2022.

Strelecky Island in Prague, Czech Republic - 10 Cheapest Places To Travel In 2022 [Asia + Europe Edition]!

With Coronavirus still lingering as we head full-throttle towards yet another new year, you might be wondering where can I travel in 2022 ? Although there is no certain answer to that with restrictions worldwide ever changing, it does seem that travel is gradually becoming a possibility again . Many of us love to make good old travel-related New Year’s Resolutions, and to help you sculpt your 2022 budget-travel bucket list for the year ahead of us, here are some of the absolute cheapest places to travel in 2022 across Asia and Europe !

Tip: Make sure you check country-specific rules and regulations using a legitimate source before you book a trip or visit any destination, and get good travel insurance. This list of cheap places to visit in 2022 does not reflect current travel guidelines.

1. Bali, Indonesia

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple in Bali, Indonesia - 10 Cheapest Places To Travel In 2022 [Asia + Europe Edition]!

You might think that Bali is an expensive place to visit, and when you see the stunning photos featured in travel brochures which just ooze luxury, it’s not hard to see why. Yes, you could blow your life savings on swanky retreats, Buddha bowls and spa days, but you really don’t need too. If you’re savvy, Bali can be one of the cheapest places to travel in Asia . Accommodation and food is super affordable, and the prices of transfers and tours are really reasonable too. The highest expense is going to be the international flights (especially if you are coming from outside of Asia) but once you are there, it could actually work out cheaper than you think .

Bali, Indonesia

In fact, you probably won’t believe me when I say that the hotel I stayed in when I visited Ubud as part of a trip to Cambodia, Bali and Hong Kong, and during another stint travelling Singapore, Malaysia and Bali cost me just £14.50 per person per night (~$19.50 – based on 2 people sharing) – it had 2 swimming pools, a 4-poster bed and private terrace, included breakfast and was situated in the rice fields just off of Monkey Forest Road. And, my hotel in Kuta which was just a 10 minute walk from the beach, included breakfast, had a private terrace and a lush swimming pool cost just £8.87 per person per night (~$11.93 – based on 2 people sharing). Talk about snapping up a bargain!

2. Krakow, Poland

Wawel Castle in Krakow, Poland - Most Walkable Cities In Europe!

Poland is one of the cheapest places to travel in Europe , and Krakow is no exception. One of the most walkable cities in Europe , Krakow is located in the south of the country along the Vistula River. A popular city break destination for fun-lovers, history-buffs and culture-seekers, Krakow can be done on a budget as easy as wink . But in order to make Krakow one of the cheapest places to travel in 2022, you will need to avoid certain times of the year when prices can be inflated (especially for flights).

Krakow Market Hall, Poland - 10 Cheapest Places To Travel In 2022 [Asia + Europe Edition]!

Due to the enchanting Krakow Christmas Market, December can be an expensive time of the year to visit the city. Similarly, a trip is going to work out pricey over New Year and during the European summer holidays which usually span from June-September. In my experience, flights tend to be less expensive at the beginning of the year or around November . I visited Krakow one March, and for the return flights and an apartment it cost me a grand total of £98.72 for 4 nights (~$132.72 – apartment based on 2 people sharing).

3. Langkawi, Malaysia

Cenang Beach in Langkawi, Malaysia - - 10 Cheapest Places To Travel In 2022 [Asia + Europe Edition]!

Located off the west coast of the Malay peninsula, Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands. The main island is Pulau Langkawi, and is Malaysia’s answer to a tropical paradise . With palm-lined beaches, jungle-clad mountains, the greenest rice fields and a crystal clear coastline, there are some wonderful things to do in Langkawi . And the reason it makes this list of cheap travel destinations for 2022 is because it is a tax-free island which means it’s rather affordable!

Langkawi SkyCab

Like Bali, the biggest expense you will outlay is going to be your international flights , especially if you are not departing from another country or region in Asia. But you will not believe how affordable it can be for accommodation , food and drink . I remember being (perhaps) a little overzealous when popping to a local supermarket on arrival in Langkawi, and buying a few to many bags of crisps, sweets, and cans of local beer for the poolside because it was pocket-money prices (psst… it’s not just snacks which are cheap in Langkawi!).

4. St Julians, Malta

Traditional Maltese Luzzu Fishing Boats on Spinola Bay - Best things to do in St Julians, Malta

Malta seems to be becoming an increasingly popular holiday destination alongside well-loved counterparts like Greece and Croatia (or perhaps it’s always been popular, and I’m just noticing it more). Located on the east coast of the island, St Julians is an old Maltese fishing village that has now sprawled into a buzzy cosmopolitan town. With no shortage of things to do in St Julians , it’s the ideal base for any itinerary for Malta and if you visit at the right time, it’s budget friendly too.

The Carmelite Church in Balluta Bay, St Julians, Malta - 10 Cheapest Places To Travel In 2022 [Asia + Europe Edition]!

One November, I found some really cheap flights to Malta from the UK and this led me to investigate the possibility of a quick holiday there (psst… one of the top tips for how to travel cheap in Europe is to visit off peak). Unsurprisingly, I soon booked the trip, and it is one of the cheapest getaways I’ve ever had . For the return flights, UK airport parking, Malta airport transfers and an apartment it cost me the grand sum of £139.87 (~$187.69) for 5 days based on 2 people sharing. Cheap, cheap, cheap.

5. Marmaris, Turkey

Marmaris Marina, Turkey - 10 Cheapest Places To Travel In 2022 [Asia + Europe Edition]!

A popular Mediterranean destination for sun-worshippers and water-sports lovers , Marmaris is a port city which makes for one of the best summer city break destinations in Europe . With a winding promenade which snakes along the sandy beach and around the chic marina,  Marmaris is the perfect spot to base yourself for wider exploration of Turkey via a good old organised day tour, such as to Pamukkale which is one of the natural wonders of Europe or to the Lycian Tombs in Dalyan which is one of the most unique places to visit in Europe .

Lycian Rocks Tombs in Dalyan, Turkey - One of the most unique places to visit in Europe!

If you are looking for all inclusive style affordable places to travel in 2022, then Marmaris might just tickle your fancy. It is (usually) one of the cheaper package deal holiday destinations (especially for us Brits) and if you’re flexible on dates and avoid the European summer time , you might be able to snap up a bargain with one of the big travel operators. Even if you’re not an all inclusive type of traveller, it can sometimes work out cheaper to book this way than self-catering (and then you’ve got the option to eat in the hotel too).

6. Chiang Mai, Thailand

Wat Chiang Man in Chiang Mai, Thailand - 10 Cheapest Places To Travel In 2022 [Asia + Europe Edition]!

Situated in the north of the Land of Smiles, Chiang Mai is usually on most backpackers hitlists during their Thailand itinerary . Surrounded by mountains that are carpeted in jungle, Chiang Mai is a paradise for adventurers, culture-seekers, foodies, and history-enthusiasts alike. Thailand is famed for being inexpensive, but some areas are easier on the wallet than others, and Chiang Mai is one of them, with accommodation, food, transport, day trips, drinks, and other attractions being budget-friendly.

Wat Chadi Luang in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Thailand was the first place I travelled around in Southeast Asia, and it gave me a glimpse into just how affordable the region can be (I’ve never looked back since). For 5 nights in a hotel with a private bathroom and balcony , based on 2 people sharing, I paid an insane price of just £25.50 (~$34.20) which is just astonishing (you’d struggle to get 1 night in a decent hotel in the UK for that). Granted, the prices may have increased a little since I visited, but I would bet that Chiang Mai is still one of the cheapest holiday destinations in 2022.

7. Prague, Czech Republic

Charles Bridge, Prague - 10 Cheapest Places To Travel In 2022 [Asia + Europe Edition]!

Eastern Europe is renowned for being one of the cheapest places to travel in Europe, and the enchanting city of Prague is no exception to the rule. Boasting an Old Town resembling the pages of a children’s fairytale book, Prague is a bucket list worthy 2022 travel destination . With cobbled streets lined with some of the finest Gothic and Romanesque architecture, there is no shortage of things to do in Prague to fill any short city break or longer getaway.

Church of Our Lady before Tyn in Prague, Czech Republic

If you’re sensible, the price of food, drink and attractions in Prague are affordable, and like Krakow, flights to Prague from other European destinations tend to be relatively cheap if you avoid peak travel periods like Christmas and summer . I visited the city as part of a dual trip to Prague and Rome, and stayed for 5 nights. So you have an idea of how much accommodation costs in Prague, an apartment just on the outskirts of the city cost me £113.50 (~$152.53) based on 2 people sharing. For a decent burger meal somewhere delicious like Sad Mans Tongue , you can expect to pay in the region of £8-£9 (~$10-$12) – you can get cheaper food depending on where you want to eat.

8. Hoi An, Vietnam

Hoi An Old Town, Vietnam - 10 Cheapest Places To Travel In 2022 [Asia + Europe Edition]!

Hoi An is one of my absolute favourite places in Southeast Asia, and is one of the very best places to visit in Vietnam . It is a uniquely special place, where Oriental and French Colonial influence charmingly intertwine with modern Vietnamese life. You might recognise Hoi An for its world-famous array of colourful lanterns which illuminate the streets and the Thu Bon River at night. Wandering through Hoi An, you will stumble across an abundance of architectural delights, from colonial buildings to Chinese temples.

An Bang Beach in Hoi An - 9 Best Places To Visit In Vietnam

Hoi An is another one of those places that was extremely kind to my bank balance , hence its appearance on this list of the cheapest places to travel in 2022, and should be a definite stop on any Vietnam itinerary . Everything about Hoi An is affordable, from the food to the drink to the accommodation. If you choose wisely, your accommodation may include the use of bicycles which is one of the best ways to get around Hoi An and will avoid you spending out on this separately. Just scroll through Hoi An hotels to see just how unbelievably cheap good quality accommodation can be.

9. Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Stari Most in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina - 10 Cheapest Places To Travel In 2022 [Asia + Europe Edition]!

Located in the south of beautiful Bosnia and Herzegovina close to the Croatian border, Mostar is a city where east and west collide . Throughout the Old Town you will see Ottoman influence everywhere you look, from the food to the trinkets sold on riverside stalls. The emerald Neretva River flows through Mostar, under the tall arched Stari Most (the Old Town bridge) which takes pride of place in the city. You might recognise Stari Most as the bridge used by daring divers who take the plunge into the cold blue waters below.

Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina - 10 Cheapest Places To Travel In 2022 [Asia + Europe Edition]!

When I visited Mostar as a day trip during my 10 day trip to Croatia , I found it incredibly inexpensive for food, drink and trinkets . I absolutely fell in love with Mostar, so much so that since visiting I have researched on many occasions returning there for a longer period of time. Along with cheap food, drinks, and gifts (like souvenirs), I have found that Mostar is one of the cheapest places to visit (in 2022 and probably beyond). Accommodation is budget-friendly and buses are affordable too.

Tip: Flights to/from Bosnia and Herzegovina from other parts of Europe can be a little on the pricey side and the capital, Sarajevo, is a couple of hours by road to Mostar. It can work out cheaper to fly to/from Dubrovnik in Croatia, and bus-it to Mostar from there.

10. Budapest, Hungary

Parliament Building in Budapest, Hungary - 10 Cheapest Places To Travel In 2022 [Asia + Europe Edition]!

Last but far from least on this list of the cheapest places to travel in 2022 is the Hungarian capital , Budapest. One of the most magical Christmas city breaks in Europe , I spent 3 days in Budapest one December and I have the fondest memories of my trip there. Split into Buda and Pest by the mighty Danube River and connected by the impressive Szechenyi Chain Bridge , the city is fast becoming one of the most popular city break destinations in Europe , perhaps owing to its abundance of things to do, beauty and sheer affordability.

Szechenyi Thermal Baths in Budapest, Hungary - 3 days in Budapest!

Just a word of warning… flights to/from Budapest are usually going to be more expensive around December because like many other European cities, it too has some wonderful Christmas Markets (I was just lucky to find cheap flights). But you can expect to pay reasonable prices year-round for accommodation, food, drinks and transportation . To give you an idea, I paid £35.50 (~$47.53, based on 2 people sharing) for a central apartment for 3 nights, and a pint of local beer in one of the ruin bars cost around £2.00 (~$2.68) at the time. Pretty affordable right?

Pssst… sharing’s caring! Pin this post using one of the images below, so you can find it easily later!
