After an explosive and contentious Netflix special in 2021, Dave Chappelle is hitting the road again.

The veteran comedian has announced the dates for a fall stand-up comedy tour, titled “Dave Chappelle Live,” which will open with twin dates at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Aug. 22-23 and conclude at Chicago’s United Center on Oct. 4.

Tickets to the tour, produced by Live Nation, will be available starting with local presales on Wednesday, July 26. The general onsale begins on Thursday, July 27, at 10 a.m. local time at Ticketmaster.com.

Popular on Variety

Chappelle has been a controversial figure following his 2021 Netflix special “The Closer,” in which he made jokes about transgender people, leading to  company walkouts  and protests last October. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos originally defended Chappelle, saying in statement that the comedian is “one of the most popular stand-ups today” and “as with our other talent, we work hard to support their creative freedom — even though this means there will always be content on Netflix some people believe is harmful.” Sarandos ultimately said he “screwed up” in his reaction to the Chappelle backlash.

The comedian made headlines again in 2022 when he was attacked on stage  while performing a comedy set during the Netflix Is a Joke festival in Los Angeles.

Dave Chappelle sets August NYC dates as opener for 2023 U.S. comedy tour

Dave Chappelle performs during a midnight pop-up show at Radio City Music Hall on October 16, 2022 in New York City.

The multi-city “Dave Chappelle Live” comedy jaunt will open at Madison Square Garden on Aug. 22 and Aug. 23. Produced by Live Nation, the tour goes on to include stops in Detroit, New Orleans and Nashville — concluding in early October at the United Center in Chicago.

Presale tickets go on sale July 26, while the general sale begins July 27 at 10 a.m. local time through Ticketmaster .

Dave Chappelle, during a midnight pop-up show at Radio City Music Hall on October 16, 2022, is hitting the road this fall, setting two New York City dates at Madison Square Garden for its kickoff.

In recent years, the 49-year-old funnyman has become a lightning rod within the LGBTQ+ community for what many deem as anti-trans views.

Chappelle’s 2021 Netflix special, “The Closer,” sparked a social media firestorm and led to employee walkouts, firings and resignations at the streaming platform. The controversy even forced CEO Ted Sarandos to issue an “I screwed up” admission about how he handled the fallout.

Last July, a popular Minneapolis concert venue pulled the plug on a sold-out show — just hours before Chappelle was set to take the stage. The cancellation followed a public outcry against the booking, with many people expressing outrage at the venue for offering a platform to the “transphobe.”

And on May 3, 2022, a man attempted to attack Chappelle onstage during a historic show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. That man, identified as Isaiah Lee, was sentenced to 270 days in jail in December.

Meanwhile, Chappelle — a five-time Emmy and four-time Grammy Award winner, who was awarded the 2019 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor — has remained unapologetic about his anti-trans material.

Man who attacked Dave Chappelle at Netflix festival sentenced to 270 days in jail

In 2022, however, both men were in the headlines in association with various controversies.

Last March, Rock was the victim of the slap heard 'round world , when actor Will Smith walked onstage during the Academy Awards and smacked the comedian across the face in response to a joke Rock made about Smith's wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith .

Meanwhile, Chappelle placed himself within a media firestorm, attracting criticism for jokes on "Saturday Night Live" and on other stages that some people condemned as anti-Semitic and transphobic .

These incidents explain why a press release announcing the show contains unusually strong wording about the prohibition of cellphones and the ownership "rights." While concertgoers "maintain possession of their phones throughout the night," all phones and smart watches are "secured in Yondr pouches that will be unlocked at the end of the show."

"No cellphones, cameras or recording devices will be allowed at this show," states the press release, from Live Nation Entertainment. "Anyone caught with a cellphone in the venue will be immediately ejected."

On ownership rights, the release states that "any jokes and sketches delivered during (the) performance...may not be copied, translated, transmitted, displayed, distributed, or reproduced verbatim" without express prior consent from Pilot Boy Productions, a film and TV production company founded by Chappelle.

The release continues: "Any Use of the Materials without the express prior written consent of Pilot Boy Productions, Inc. is strictly prohibited and shall be subject to all available legal remedies, whether in equity or at law at the cost of anyone who violates this prohibition."

‘Man, I Love Being Cancelled’: Dave Chappelle Defiant at Tour Kickoff

By Zack Ruskin

Zack Ruskin

Perhaps Dave Chappelle was striving for irony when he spoke about being cancelled before a sell-out crowd at San Francisco’s Chase Center on Thursday night.

Kicking off a recently announced 10-city tour, the comedian took the stage to address the ongoing backlash over his latest Netflix special, The Closer , which features a number of controversial jokes about the transgender community. Despite the rightful criticism many have shared in the wake of that special’s release, Chappelle’s career seems to be doing just fine if the arena-wide standing ovation he received upon arrival on Thursday is any indication.

Regardless, much of the comic’s material focused on his self-proclaimed status as a cultural pariah. “Man, I love being cancelled,” Chappelle told the crowd of 19,000. “It is a huge relief. It’s like getting Capone on tax evasion.”

There was, in fact, a decidedly outlaw nature to the entirety of the evening, which began with opening sets from comedian  Jeff Ross and Oakland comic Luenell Campbell. After Ross returned to “speed roast” willing members of the audience, the focus pivoted from live entertainment to a screening of Chappelle’s new documentary, Untitled .

In an Instagram post announcing his tour, Chappelle claimed that the fervor over his recent special had cost his film a chance to appear at several festivals. He also promised that those who attended would have the chance to “see what they’re trying to obstruct you from seeing.”

Well, having seen Untitled , it’s difficult to ascertain what in this movie could possibly have merited such an effort.

Largely focused on a series of intimate, outdoor shows that Chappelle hosted during the pandemic last summer in Yellow Springs, Ohio, the film is packed with appearances from other famous comics like Jon Stewart, Chris Rock, and Tiffany Haddish.

Balancing footage of the comics’ act with scenes of them bonding together by means of kayaks and kickball games, Untitled goes to great lengths to underscore the logistic challenges that went into pulling off over 50 shows long before a Covid vaccine was available.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

To that end, we see Chappelle buy his own equipment and hire nursing staff to make rapid testing available on-site. We also watch him engage in an ongoing struggle with the region’s zoning inspector, who threatens to shut the venue down. This culminates in what is intended to be the film’s climax: A Zoom meeting of local government officials who must decide whether to issue Chappelle’s production a temporary permit.

If it sounds anticlimactic, the same can be said for what happens next: a Covid outbreak among Chappelle’s staff that essentially ends his Yellow Springs experiment. The documentary is not, however, without its powerful moments, including a performance from poet Amir Sulaiman and footage capturing Chappelle’s furious response to the murder of George Floyd in a set filmed ten days after Floyd was killed.

Over the course of the documentary, a number of small business owners in Yellow Springs are also offered brief spotlights. It all serves to emphasize an overarching theme built around the importance of community and togetherness, which is one Chappelle returns to again and again throughout the film. From that angle, Untitled can ostensibly be seen as a portrait of a small town trying to weather a pandemic with the help of some familiar faces, but in truth, the narrative is really driven by Chappelle’s own efforts to make sense of the pandemic by going full Field of Dreams .

What, if anything, he learns from the whole experience is difficult to say, given Untitled is ultimately best understood as a visual scrapbook of an unusual summer spent with very rich and funny friends.

Such amenities were also on display in San Francisco, where Chappelle’s time at the microphone following his documentary screening was quickly ceded to a parade of popular Bay Area music talents. Speaking fondly of his relationship with the region, Chappelle began his abbreviated set by vaguely addressing the backlash surrounding him before quickly segueing into a gay joke and then inviting Oakland soul artist Goapele to the stage.

From that point forward — it’s impossible to say when, exactly, as every member of the audience had their phones locked in Yondr pouches upon arrival — the night basically turned into a Bay Area block party.

After two songs from Goapele, Chappelle returned for a few more brief remarks and then brought out another Oakland musician: R&B singer-superproducer Raphael Saadiq . Though both Goapele and Saadiq expressed support for Chappelle, neither mentioned any specifics regarding his situation and why he’s in it.

From there, the hyphy movement enjoyed a brief comeback courtesy of a medley of performances from Too Short, E-40 , and Lil Jon . Running through certified Bay Area anthems like “Blow the Whistle” and “Tell Me When to Go,” the set saw the crowd at Chase Center go predictably wild.

Then all that was left was a few closing words from Chappelle, who again returned to the subject of his alleged cancellation to end the night.

“For the past three or four weeks,” he said, “they’ve been saying in the news that I’ve been cancelled. It doesn’t matter. The point is, no matter what they say, we are together.”

Oscillating between vague platitudes about unity and his delight at being back in San Francisco, Chappelle’s material came across like the words of a man at a crossroads. The comedian himself admitted as much, when he closed his set by noting that the last time he felt this way, he decided to quit Chappelle’s Show .

“I’m going through something,” Chappelle added. “It might be history.”

And with that observation, so was the evening.

It’s difficult to determine exactly where Chappelle goes next once this tour concludes. With his Netflix obligations complete, his options are wide open. Again, this would seem to contradict the very essence of whatever it means to be cancelled, but hopefully the fervor over Chappelle dedicating an entire special to defending his terrible jokes about transgender people will inspire him to rethink what it truly takes to bring people together.

Dave Chappelle's 'The Closer' controversy

Dave Chappelle, who lives in Yellow Springs, Ohio, came under fire in 2021 for his Netflix standup special "The Closer." The special provoked backlash due to his remarks about the LBGTQ+ community , in particular his focus on the transgender community.

In the special, Chappelle resurfaced a December 2019 controversy in which “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling drew backlash  after conflating sex with gender  and defending ideas suggesting that changing one's biological sex was a threat to her own gender identity.

Chappelle also attempted to paint a juxtaposition between the pace of civil rights gained by the LGBTQ community and those fought for by the Black community.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos defended his decision to keep the special on the streaming service amid internal criticism from company employees.

Sarandos sent a staff memo at the time pledging Netflix's commitment to the special, citing Netflix's work in supporting their talent's creative freedom.

Sarandos' support of the special led to a walkout from a group of Netflix employees in 2021, a gesture that was amplified by emotional pleas from supporters of the walkout who rallied outside company headquarters.

The employees said company executives dismissed their concerns that Chappelle's comments in "The Closer" could lead to violence against the trans community.

At the time, two employees, one transgender and one non-binary, filed labor charges against the streaming giant alleging the company retaliated against them for speaking out aboutChappelle's special.

Hours before the walkout, Netflix shared a statement with USA TODAY: "We value our trans colleagues and allies, and understand the deep hurt that’s been caused. We respect the decision of any employee who chooses to walk out, and recognize we have much more work to do both within Netflix and in our content.”

"I want everyone in this audience to know that even though the media frames this that it's me versus that community, that is not what it is," Chappelle said in a 2021 Instagram clip. "Do not blame the LBGTQ (sic) community for any of this (expletive). This has nothing to do with them. It's about corporate interest, and what I can say, and what I cannot say."

"The Closer" received two Primetime Emmy nominations in 2022, including outstanding variety special (pre-recorded). Stan Lathan was also nominated for outstanding directing of a variety special for his work on "The Closer."

After the Emmy nominations were announced, people on social media voiced their frustration and criticized the decision to give further recognition to Chappelle's Netflix special.

Dave Chappelle attacked onstage

In May 2022, Chappelle was attacked onstage at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles during the Netflix Is A Joke festival.

An audience member stormed the stage asChappelle, 48, was exiting the stage after his performance, lunging at him and tackling him to the ground, according to a press release from the Los Angeles Police Department.

The man also pointed a replica handgun, which contained a knife blade, at Chappelle during the encounter, resulting in a charge for assault with a deadly weapon, according to police.

The man was identified as Isaiah Lee and in December 2022, he was sentenced to 270 days in county jail.

Dave Chappelle hosting 'Saturday Night Live'

In November 2022, Chappelle hosted "Saturday Night Live" for a third time, and the reception was not warm.

"SNL" writer Celeste Yim shared a seemingly pointed message after Chappelle was announced as host. "I'm trans and non-binary. I use they/them pronouns. Transphobia is murder and it should be condemned,"  they wrote on their Instagram Story  alongside a photo from work, captured by a Reddit screenshot.

The hosting gig also came on the heels of "SNL" having just recently hired its first nonbinary cast member, Molly Kearney, just months before.

Katie Maloney and Ariana Madix

Fans of Bravo ’s Vanderpump Rules flocked to West Hollywood on Wednesday. Just yards away from Sur, the restaurant that spawned the long-standing Bravo series, cast members Katie Maloney and Ariana Madix now have an eatery to call their own.

The long-awaited sandwich shop, called Something About Her, officially opened mid-morning on a cloudy Wednesday, May 22, with a large crowd eagerly gathered outside. The cozy shop is hard to miss with a yellow-and-white striped awning acting as a beacon for eager fans of the duo.

Shortly after opening, Madix and Maloney popped out to surprise fans, diligently greeting guests and smiling for selfies. Some fans wore Something About Her merch while others could be overheard telling the women that they were their “favorite” from the reality show. The line eventually had to be shut down due to lack of availability, but the co-owners came back out to meet and snap photos with those who didn’t make it inside.

In addition to the warm welcome from Madix and Maloney, Something About Her staff was also readily available to help fans at the grand opening. At least one staff member, rocking a Something About Her T-shirt, walked up and down the line offering cups of water to those waiting.

The main menu features nine sandwich creations, most around $15, along with two classic sandwiches — an $8 peanut butter and jelly and an $11 grilled cheese. The creations appear to honor notable leading ladies with names like “The Meg,” “The Reese” and “The Viola.”

To accompany the food, Something About Her has several drink options, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Keeping it in the Bravo family, the sandwich shop also offers two Loverboy drinks — a low-sugar to zero-sugar alcoholic beverage line started by Summer House stars Kyle Cooke and Amanda Batula.
