Louisiana teen missing after going overboard in Bahamas while celebrating graduation

Bahamian and U.S. authorities are searching for a teenager who went overboard Wednesday night while celebrating graduation.

Cameron Robbins, 18, went to the Atlantis Paradise resort in Nassau with other teenagers from Baton Rouge to mark their high school graduations, Louisiana State University confirmed Thursday.

Robbins graduated from the University Lab High School, which operates as part of LSU, on Sunday.

The U.S. Coast Guard said Thursday that its crews were assisting the Royal Bahamas Defense Force in searching for a missing American who went overboard from a “sunset cruise.”

The Royal Bahamas Defense Force did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The trip was not a school sanctioned event, according to LSU. It's unclear how many other recent graduates participated in the trip.

Kevin George, director of University Lab High School, said the school's community is "praying for the best possible outcome." Counselors have been made available on campus for students and faculty.

"I have been in touch with Cameron’s family and at this time, authorities are still searching for him in the Bahamas," George said in a statement Thursday. "In times like these we must come together and support each other."

Search crews are looking for a missing American teenager who went overboard during a sunset cruise in the Bahamas, authorities said. Cameron Robbins, 18, was on the trip celebrating his graduation from a Baton Rouge, Louisiana, high school.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force said the teen apparently jumped from a pleasure vessel Wednesday night near Athol Island, near the capital of Nassau. According to CBS affiliate WAFB-TV , witnesses said he was acting on a dare.

In addition to the police, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force are looking for Robbins. The Coast Guard said Thursday evening that air crews were assisting in the search.

Robbins was on the trip with other recent Baton Rouge high school graduates, according to WAFB-TV. Robbins graduated from University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge on Sunday.

The school's director, Kevin George, said in a statement to the station that the community was praying for the best possible outcome from the search.

"In times like these, we must come together and support each other," George said. "Words fall short of expressing the worry our entire school community is feeling."

A U.S. State Department spokesperson told CBS News the department was aware of reports of a U.S. citizen missing in the Bahamas. The spokesperson said the department works closely with local authorities during searches for missing Americans and shares information with families.

The US Coast Guard has suspended a search for a missing Louisiana teenager who reportedly jumped off a boat on a dare during a high school graduation trip to the Bahamas .

Cameron Robbins, 18, was celebrating with students from University High Lab School in Baton Rouge when he fell from the Blackbeard’s Revenge sunset cruise at about 11.30pm on Wednesday, a Lousiana State University (LSU) spokesperson told WBRZ .

A massive two-day operation conducted by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) and US Coast Guard using helicopters and surveillance aircraft failed to yield any trace of the teenager, and the search was called off on Friday, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

Robbins had arrived in the Bahamas with students from several Baton Rouge high schools on a graduation holiday just a few hours before he disappeared, a parent told WAFB .

Witnesses told the local news site that Robbins was acting on a dare when he fell from the boat.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force has said it is investigating the claims.

Robbins fell from the boat near Athol Island, northeast of Nassau, the US Coast Guard said .

Video obtained by WBRZ appears to show the teenager splashing in the water and swimming alongside the boat before disappearing.

The cruise ship, which is designed to look like a pirate ship, searched for several hours for the missing student, witnesses told the news site.

Robbins’ family flew out to the Bahamas on Thursday, according to WAFB .

In a statement, the family said it was returning to Raton Rouge after the search was called off.

“We want to thank the Bahamas government, the US Coast Guard, the United Cajun Navy, and Congressman Garrett Graves for everything they have done for us,” the statement read, according to USA Today .

“In this time of grief, we thank our family, friends, and well-wishers for granting us the privacy we need to properly remember our son and mourn his loss.”

Friends and school teachers gathered at University High Lab School, which is run by LSU’s College of Human Sciences and Education, gathered for a prayer circle at the school last week.

Robbins’ high school baseball coach Justin Morgan told CNN he was a “fierce competitor” who played third baseman and pitcher.

Kevin George, the director of LSU’s College of Human Sciences and Education, told the network in an interview that Robbins had attended the school for 13 years.

“He’s an athlete, great kid, great smile, great head of hair. Just one of the kids you’re so proud of when they cross the stage,” Mr George told CNN.

In a news release on Friday, the US Coast Guard said: “We were informed by the RBDF this evening that they were suspending the active search efforts pending further developments, and were not requesting further Coast Guard assistance after notifying the Robbins family.

“We offer our sincerest condolences to Cameron Robbins’ family and friends.”

Search called off for Cameron Robbins, Baton Rouge teen who fell overboard on senior trip to Bahamas

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Search efforts for an 18-year-old Louisiana high school graduate who fell overboard a boat in the Bahamas this week have been suspended, the U.S. Coast Guard said Friday, citing the Bahamian military.

Cameron Robbins was on a senior trip, celebrating his graduation from University High Lab School in Baton Rouge, when he fell off the boat Wednesday evening, a spokeswoman for Louisiana State University told CNN .

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force, which had been searching for him, told the U.S. Coast Guard it was suspending active search efforts Friday and that further help from the Coast Guard wasn't needed, the U.S. military branch said.

The U.S. Coast Guard had helped with the search from Wednesday into Friday evening, it said.

"We offer our sincerest condolences to Cameron Robbins' family and friends," the Coast Guard said.

Before the search was suspended, Robbins was described as a "fierce competitor" by his high school baseball coach, Justin Morgan, who told CNN the teenager was both a third baseman and pitcher on the team.

"Cameron is a kid who is truly loved by his teammates, coaches, teachers and fellow classmates," Morgan told CNN. "He is a fierce competitor on the baseball field. He is a hard worker both on and off of the playing field."

Morgan said the school community has been struggling since hearing the news of Robbins' disappearance.

"Our thoughts and prayers have been and will remain with the Robbins family during this time," he said.

The high school is operated under the university's College of Human Sciences and Education. Robbins attended the school for all 13 years of his education, director Kevin George told CNN affiliate WBRZ.

"That's a special kid that's been here throughout his entire educational career. He's an athlete, great kid, great smile, great head of hair. Just one of the kids you're so proud of when they cross the stage," George said.

"The kids reached out to us wanting to know, could they do a prayer circle? Obviously we agreed. We really appreciated their leadership in this trying time," he continued.

Robbins is believed to have fallen overboard from a sunset cruise near Nassau, the Coast Guard had said.

CNN has reached out to the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and the Royal Bahamas Police Force.

In a statement, Robbins' family said, "The Bahamas government has called off the rescue for Cameron and we are returning to Baton Rouge. We want to thank the Bahamas government, the US Coast Guard, the United Cajun Navy and Congressman Garrett Graves for everything they have done for us. In this time of grief we thank our family, friends and well wishers for granting us the privacy we need to properly remember our son and mourn his loss."

Chilling final moments of teen Cameron Robbins after he jumped overboard from cruise ship, according to shark expert

A SHARK expert has revealed what likely occurred during the final moments of a Louisiana teen's life after jumping off the deck of a cruise ship into dark waters.

On May 24, Cameron Robbins , 18, was with friends on the Blackbeard's Revenge sunset cruise in the Bahamas , celebrating their graduation from University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge .

Louisiana teen Cameron Robbins, 18, was presumed dead after leaping from a Bahamas cruise ship into the ocean

At around 11.30pm witnesses claimed that some in the group dared Robbins to jump off the ship to the water below, which he did.

Robbins went missing immediately after, and a harrowing clip was then shared of the situation from bystanders, where many believe they saw the shadow of a shark come toward the teen before he vanished in the waves.

It's been over a month since Robbins went missing, and an extensive search was called off days after the ordeal.

Now, shark expert Kevin McMurray, who runs a website called trackingsharks.com , has come forward to detail what likely happened to Robbins if it truly was a shark that caused his death.

"At the beginning of it, it looks like there is a shark or something," McMurray told Mirror after analyzing the blurry footage of Robbins in the water.

"He's in the water, and over to the left, you can see it."

McMurray continued to coincide with opinions several online users had about the video after confusion as to why Robbins didn't swim toward a life ring that was thrown for him.

"Haunting, but you can see the exact moment the shark gets him,” one Twitter user  said  and attached a screenshot of a terrifying shadow only inches away from the 18-year-old.

Another explained that Robbins could have seen the shark and decided to bolt, which is why he appeared to abandon a life ring.

“He initially goes for the buoy but then turns around when he sees the shark, ultimately disappearing into the water, likely dragged down. Very sad,” they  noted .

The shark expert said: "So my analysis, what I think happened is, he got in the water and he was swimming around, the shark, for some reason, or whatever it is - I'm not for sure saying it is a shark, but it looks a lot like a shark - essentially it comes and surfaces and there's a life ring out to his right."

"So he's looking at whatever popped up out of the water, and instead of swimming toward the life ring he turns around at that point. I think all that splashing we see is just him trying to get away from whatever it is."

McMurray added that "it's always possible" for sharks to attack in the ocean, especially tiger sharks .

Local officials also noted that the waters near Athol Island were home to several breeds of sharks.

Commodore Raymond King of the Royal Bahamas Defense Force (RBDF) said the area was "really shark-infested," per  Daily Mail .

The shark expert told Mirror that even a single bite could risk exposure for Robbins, although he could have been later consumed by the beast , which would lead to incredible difficulty in finding any remains.

"My guess is that if something like that did occur, maybe a single bite or something like that, more than likely, again you can't say because anything's possible, but exposure would probably be what I think would have occurred and he may have died of that," McMurray explained to the publication.

"Either he sank or a shark ate his body, that's possible. There are a lot of tiger sharks there, and they'll scavenge."

McMurray added that "recovering [Robbins' body] would be nearly impossible. Something like that, you're talking about a massive search area with currents and all that."

Crews from the boat and several agencies, including the United States Coast Guard and the Royal Bahamas Defense Force, spanned over 325 miles searching for Robbins.

His family released a statement after the announcement of the search's end on May 26.

"The Bahamas government has called off the rescue for Cameron, and we are returning to Baton Rouge," they said, per Daily Mail.

"We want to thank the Bahamas government, the US Coast Guard, the United Cajun Navy, and Congressman Garrett Graves for everything they have done for us."

"In this time of grief, we thank our family, friends, and well-wishers for granting us the privacy we need to properly remember our son and mourn his loss," the family continued.

Robbins was a star  baseball  player at University Laboratory School.

Cameron robbins’ friends tried to stop him from jumping off party boat and into ‘shark-infested’ ocean: parent.

Friends tried to intervene and stop missing teenager Cameron Robbins from jumping off a pirate-themed party boat and into the “shark-infested” ocean shortly before he disappeared in the Bahamas May 24.

A parent whose son was aboard the Blackbeard’s Revenge vessel told Fox News several students tried to stop Robbins before he plunged into the dark waters near the uninhabited Athol Island, just northwest of Bahamas capital Nassau.

“This was a booze cruise, and they were on their way back when this happened,” the parent told the network. “My son texted me when it happened, saying, ‘Cameron jumped off. They can’t find him.’ They were out there until 2, 3 in the morning.

“It was a terrible weather that night. The kids were cold, wet and traumatized. The girls were in bikinis and bathing suits. The guys were giving them their shirts. It was a bad time to bring drunk 18-year-olds out into waters near this island where there’s nothing.”

Haunting video footage shows Robbins swimming away from a rescue buoy as onlookers shout for him to grab the device.

CAMERON ROBBINS

Online viewers have speculated they could see flashes of shark-like sea creature in the video and Robbins was trying to get away from it.

A second later, he has disappeared under the surface.

The US Coast Guard, the United Cajun Navy and the Royal Bahamas Defense Force all searched the murky waters for the next two days.

They covered over 325 square miles with no success before calling off the search on May 26 as they had found no trace of Robbins.

In the video of the last moments Cameron is seen, someone can be heard yelling , “This kid f–king jumped off! Oh my f–king God! Oh, shut the f–k up! Oh, bye, bye!”

Brian Trascher, vice president of the nonprofit search-and-rescue group United Cajun Navy, told WBRZ: “Had they found a piece of clothing or any kind of clue, that would cause them to extend that 48-hour period, but if they don’t get any kind of indication, then that’s usually when they call it off,” Trascher siad.

Robbins and his friends joined graduates from other high schools on Blackbeard’s Revenge for a pleasure cruise that was supposed to travel around the uninhabited Athol Island.

A spokesperson for Blackbeard’s Revenge told The Post the boat’s crew “executed the ‘man overboard’ protocol in line with all approved safety procedures and company policies to ensure the best chance of retrieving an individual who has gone overboard.”

“Our deepest condolences to the Robbins family as they go through this difficult time,” the spokesperson added.

“Since the incident, the company has reviewed all safety measures and protocols and are confident that the company’s practices were and continue to be in line with the highest industry standards to keep its passengers safe.”

A memorial service for the popular teen will beheld on Sunday in Baton Rouge.

One 'negligent fact' saw tragic teen star jump off cruise ship into shark infested waters

Cameron Robbins, 18, jumped into shark-infested waters while on a pirate-themed sunset cruise without a life jacket on May 24 during a high school graduation trip. He's still not been found

Missing teenager and baseball star Cameron Robbins was let down by the cruise industry due to one "negligent fact", a safety campaigner has claimed.

18-year-old Cameron, from Louisiana, US, disappeared after reportedly being urged to jump into the shark-infested waters without a life jacket on May 24.

He had just landed in the Bahamas for a high school graduation trip when he was filmed jumping overboard a pirate-themed sunset cruise as a dare.

Chilling footage from that night shows the moment the teen jumps into the dark waters in his swimming trunks, with no life jacket, splashing several feet from the boat, before drifting into the darkness.

Cameron was onboard a party Carnival cruise ship with his friends during a reportedly boozy evening.

And now a cruise ship safety campaigner has slammed the industry for failing to act responsibly after the ship was allegedly serving passengers alcohol all night.

Jamie Barnett, president of the non-profit organization International Cruise Victims Association, has been long-campaigning for legislation that helps protect passengers on cruise ships and increase the rights of victims.

She tragically lost her daughter Ashley after she died while onboard a cruise ship to Ensenada in 2006.

Jamie believes the cruise industry does not take into consideration how much a passenger has drunk, which puts them at an increased risk of danger.

If cruise ships regulated how much passengers were drinking, Cameron may have not jumped overboard, she believes.

She said: "The unconscionably negligent fact is that the cruise lines have absolutely no regard for the age or the overserving of alcohol to passengers.

"It is clear that the persons involved in both of these overboard incidents had likely been drinking heavily and somehow, the cruise lines are able to avoid any of the consequences of such irresponsible policies."

Jamie believes that if the Man Overboard Detection Technology, which detects anyone going overboard, was installed in more cruise ships in the US and around the world, it could have saved more lives.

She said: "What is particularly disturbing, is the fact that the only comprehensive US law that is applicable to cruise ship passenger safety and security (and there are none elsewhere in the world), known as the CVSSA, was passed all the way back in 2010.

"It included the requirement for Man Overboard Detection Technology that would detect anyone going overboard to be installed as soon as the technology was available.

"Trust me it is, and it has been, available, but it has still not been installed. Our organization believes this is completely unacceptable and defies explanation.

"Congress has written to the US Coast Guard asking why this is taking so long but no response has been forthcoming. I hope the pressure stays on them until they at last, 13 years later, come into compliance."

Jamie believes the industry needs to improve passenger safety to help stop the recent cases of people falling overboard.

"Much change is needed in regards to the cruise industry's passenger safety and security policies", she said.

"The industry loves to say that passenger safety is their number one concern but they certainly aren't putting their time, money, and attention where their mouth is.

"Again and again they claim they are highly regulated and need no further legislation or regulations but yet they continue with their Teflon-like approach to the laws that already apply to them, refusing to comply and begging off to congress by saying they 'lack the resources'."

Cameron was a star pitcher for the University Laboratory School's baseball team.

Cameron's baseball coach paid tribute to the teenager and called him a "fierce competitor."

Justin Morgan said: "Cameron is a kid who is truly loved by his teammates, teachers, and fellow classmates.

"He is a fierce competitor on the baseball field. He is a hard worker both on and off of the playing field.

"Our school community is struggling right now but hoping for the very best.

"Our thoughts and prayers have been and will remain with the Robbins family during this difficult time."

The Best '80s Movies These 32 Actors

The greatest hits of the greatest actors of the greatest decade!

Molly Ringwald in The Breakfast Club

The 1980s was not just a great time for movies but for the people in them. Many of our all-time favorite actors got their start in '80s movies (or at least started to hit it big during that time).

The question is, in what film did these stars hit their peak of cinematic brilliance during that decade? Let's see if we can provide an answer by looking at the best '80s movies starring the most iconic '80s actors , in our opinion.

Bruce Willis in Die Hard

Bruce Willis (Die Hard)

While the TV series Moonlighting made Bruce Willis a household name, playing John McClane, a New York cop at war with violent German thieves in an LA high-rise on Christmas Eve, made him a movie star in 1988. However, Die Hard might be the actor's best film in any decade, let alone the greatest action movie of all time.

Sigourney Weaver in Aliens

Sigourney Weaver (Aliens)

Fans have been debating which is the best Alien movie for years but no one disagrees that James Cameron 's Aliens is the best Alien movie of the '80s. The 1986 sci-fi movie classic , in which our human protagonists take on plenty more than just one vicious extraterrestrial this time, saw Sigourney Weaver reprise Xenomorph survivor Ellen Ripley to Academy Award-nominated acclaim.

Jack Nicholson in Terms of Endearment

Jack Nicholson (Terms Of Endearment)

The single most iconic Jack Nicolson performance from the 1980s, arguably, comes from the horror movie classic, The Shining . However, we chose to highlight his Academy Award-winning performance in director James L. Brooks' tragic 1983 Best Picture Oscar winner , Terms of Endearment , as Garrett, who forms a complicated relationship with his widowed next-door neighbor, Aurora Greenway (Shirley MacLaine).

Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal in When Harry Met Sally

Meg Ryan (When Harry Met Sally...)

Meg Ryan made up one of Hollywood's most beloved onscreen couples with Tom Hanks , but we loved her the most in the '80s when she was falling in love with Billy Crystal in When Harry Met Sally ... Considered one of the greatest rom-coms of all time , director Rob Reiner and Nora Ephron's clever and sweet 1989 favorite traces the titular duo's evolution from enemies, to friends, to lovers over the course of 12 years.

Maverick close-up in Top Gun

Tom Cruise (Top Gun)

Everyone had the need, the need for speed, in 1986 when director Tony Scott 's romantic, action-packed instant classic, Top Gun , ruled the box office, captured the hearts of audiences everywhere, and spawned an acclaimed blockbuster sequel in 2022 called Top Gun: Maverick . If Tom Cruise was not a movie star before then, there was no doubt he was at the top of A-list after giving his all as daredevil Navy pilot, Maverick.

Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice.

Meryl Streep (Sophie's Choice)

There are few actors with as much esteem in Hollywood as the great Meryl Streep , who earned her second Academy Award for her mesmerizing, heartbreaking performance in the title role of  Sophie’s Choice . Writer and director Alan J. Pakula's adaptation of William Styron's passionate novel follows the relationship between a Polish woman who survived the Holocaust and a Jewish-American man (played by Kevin Kline) who is obsessed with the tragedy.

Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice

Michael Keaton (Beetlejuice)

The all-time best Michael Keaton movie and performance might always be up for debate but no one can deny that, in the 1980s, no film saw him demonstrate his high-energy comedic talents and versatility better than Beetlejuice . The Oscar nominee plays the title role of Tim Burton 's 1988 horror-comedy classic (actually spelled "Betelgeuse") — a sleazy "bio-exorcist" begrudgingly enlisted by a recently deceased couple (played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) to scare their home's new inhabitants out.

M'Lynn looking sarcastic while getting her hair done in Steel Magnolias

Sally Field (Steel Magnolias)

The 1980s was a great time for Sally Field, who won both of her Oscars during that decade — one for Norma Rae in 1980 and another in 1985 for Places in the Heart . However, we believe the one film that best encapsulates the actor's stunning range is the powerful, charming 1989 dramedy Steel Magnolias , in which she shines brightly among an ensemble cast including Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Daryl Hannah, and Julia Roberts as a close-knit group of Louisiana women.

Eddie Murphy in Coming to America

Eddie Murphy (Coming To America)

There were few movie stars in the '80s bigger than Eddie Murphy, who made such a huge impact in very little time on SNL before hitting it big with feature-length classics like 48 Hrs. and Beverly Hills Cop . Yet, 1988's Coming to America was the first film to see him disappear into multiple roles and, not to mention, African Prince Akeem's search for love in Queens, New York, amounts to a hilarious and heartfelt story.

The Breakfast Club cast

Molly Ringwald (The Breakfast Club)

The first face we tend to picture when we think of the Brat Pack is Molly Ringwald, who was the go-to young female actor for coming-of-age dramedies of the '80s, such as Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles . However, her best film — and, arguably, the greatest high school movie of all time — is writer and director John Hughes' The Breakfast Club , in which she and four of the decade's most essential stars (Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Anthony Michael Hall, and Judd Nelson) play a group of socially disparate teens who find unexpected kinship during Saturday detention.

Denzel Washington sitting in the middle of testimony in Cry Freedom.

Denzel Washington (Cry Freedom)

Two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington received his first Oscar nomination for his moving portrayal of activist Steve Biko in director Richard Attenborough's Cry Freedom . The 1987 film focuses primarily on the friendship between the influential Black anti-Apartheid activist and the white South African journalist Donald Woods (Kevin Kline), who puts his own life at risk to investigate Biko's death.

Jodie Foster in The Accused

Jodie Foster (The Accused)

Not only does 1988's The Accused feature one of Jodie Foster's most powerful, Academy Award-winning performances, but it is also an enduringly relevant indictment of a flawed justice system that silences women. Foster plays Sarah Tobias, the victim of a violent assault who, along with her prosecuting attorney, Katheryn Murphy (Kelly McGillis), is challenged by a case that puts the blame on her.

Robert De Niro in Raging Bull

Robert De Niro (Raging Bull)

Out of all of Robert De Niro and director Martin Scorsese's collaborations , none have been as unique and as moving as 1980's Raging Bull . De Niro delivers a roaring one-two punch in the masterful sports movie as real-life boxer Jake LaMotta, tracing his rousing success in the ring and his tragic self-destructive tendencies outside of it.

Cher looks annoyed in Moonstruck.

Cher (Moonstruck)

In 1987, Cher proved that she was a master in both the world of music and the world of acting with her Academy Award-winning performance as Loretta Castorini in Moonstruck . Soon after the widowed Italian-American woman agrees to marry her boyfriend, Johnny Cammareri (Danny Aiello), she finds herself falling deeper and deeper in love with his brother, Ronny (Nicolas Cage).

Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in Raiders Of The Lost Ark

Harrison Ford (Raiders Of The Lost Ark)

One of Harrison Ford's all-time greatest characters is the rough, resourceful, globe-trotting archeologist Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones. The iconic hero was first introduced in 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark — director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas' tribute to cinema that would later inspire countless tributes to its stunning visual design, John Williams' sweeping score, and its endlessly thrilling, wall-to-wall action.

Diane Keaton in Reds

Diane Keaton (Reds)

Diane Keaton is an absolute revelation in co-writer and director Warren Beatty's 1981 historical epic, Reds . She plays famed activist Louise Bryant who falls in love with radical-minded fellow journalist John Reed (Beatty) as he hopes to bring the ideals of Russia's Communist Revolution to the United States.

Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society.

Robin Williams (Dead Poets Society)

The late Robin Williams gives us the best of both his comedic energy and dramatic authenticity in director Peter Weir's moving 1989 drama Dead Poet's Society . As English teacher John Keating, he serves as a much-needed role model to a close-knit group of Catholic boarding school students (played by rising stars such as Ethan Hawke and Robert Sean Leonard) who learn how to seize the day .

Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface.

Michelle Pfeiffer (Scarface)

It was in the '90s when three-time Academy Award nominee Michelle Pfeiffer really began to hit her stride but her strongest work in the '80s is, arguably, Scarface . She stars in director Brian de Palma's 1983 gangster movie classic as Elvira Hancock, who becomes the wife of Cuban crime lord, Tony Montana (Oscar winner Al Pacino).

Morgan Freeman in Glory

Morgan Freeman (Glory)

One of the most inspiring Morgan Freeman performances comes from 1989's beloved, moving war movie , Glory . The Oscar winner stars as Sergeant Major John Rawlins, who is the highest-ranked Black member of his regiment in the U.S. Army during the Civil War.

Whoopi Goldberg in The Color Purple.

Whoopi Goldberg (The Color Purple)

Legendary comedian Whoopi Goldberg earned her first Academy Award nomination for her heartbreaking performance as Celie Johnson in 1985's The Color Purple . Director Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Alice Walker's seminal novel chronicles decades in the life of the Black, Southern woman as she endures dehumanizing adversity and traumatic abuse.

Kurt Russell in Escape from New York

Kurt Russell (Escape From New York)

One of co-writer and director John Carpenter's best movies , 1981's Escape from New York , takes place in a war-torn future when Air Force One crash lands inside a maximum security prison that used to be the Big Apple and the President of the United States (Donald Pleasance) is taken hostage by the prisoners. The only one who can save him is a recently arrested, hardened war veteran named Snake Plissken, which is easily one of Kurt Russell's coolest roles and certainly one of his greatest performances.

Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction

Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction)

While we do not condone treacherous acts like boiling a family's pet rabbit alive, we would consider Alex Forrest to be a villain with understandable motivations , and not just because Glenn Close gives a brilliant performance in 1987's intense thriller, Fatal Attraction . It was married lawyer Dan Gallagher's (Michael Douglas) mistake to indulge in a one-time fling with the New York editor, who then misconstrues the affair for love and continues to taunt him and his family in increasingly horrifying ways.

Sylvester Stallone in First Blood

Sylvester Stallone (First Blood)

Sylvester Stallone has played many iconic roles in many great action movies, especially in the 1980s, but his best role from that decade would have to be John Rambo in First Blood . The 1981 adaptation of David Morell's novel is not a conventional shoot-em-up thriller like the later Rambo movies but an emotionally charged, nuanced drama in which the burdened Vietnam veteran is pushed to the edge by a cruel sheriff (Brian Dennehy) and wages a war against a whole town.

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn in Overboard

Goldie Hawn (Overboard)

Many of Oscar winner Goldie Hawn's most memorable roles see her sharing the screen with her real-life romantic partner, Kurt Russell, and the couple's chemistry was at an all-time high in director Garry Marshall's Overboard . Hawn stars in the inventive and charming 1987 rom-com as a spoiled socialite with amnesia who is convinced by a carpenter (Russell) that she is his wife and the mother of his four boys to get back at her for her cruel treatment.

Bill Murray in Ghostbusters

Bill Murray (Ghostbusters)

Academy Award nominee Bill Murray is one of the most beloved comedic talents of the '80s (or any decade, really) and to understand why, all you need to do is watch 1984's Ghostbusters . Also one of director Ivan Reitman's best movies , the spooky, kooky classic sees Murray's masterfully witty Peter Venkman team up with Ray Stantz (writer Dan Aykroyd), Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), and Winston Zeddmore (Ernie Hudson) to rid New York of its scariest spirits.

Geena Davis in The Accidental Tourist

Geena Davis (The Accidental Tourist)

Geena Davis earned an Academy Award for her wonderfully eccentric performance in 1988's The Accidental Tourist as Muriel Pritchett. Emotionally distant travel writer Macon Leary (William Hurt) meets and begins to fall for the free-spirited dog trainer after splitting with his wife (played by Kathleen Turner), following the death of their son, in director Lawrence Kasdan's moving dramedy.

Kevin Bacon in Footloose

Kevin Bacon (Footloose)

It is no wonder why Chris Prat's Peter Quill regarded Kevin Bacon's role in Footloose as one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history. Ren singlehandedly brought dance back to the cruelly repressed small town of Bomont in the timelessly entertaining music movie from 1984.

Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas in Romancing the Stone

Kathleen Turner (Romancing The Stone)

The ultimate romantic adventure comedy would have to be director Robert Zemeckis' 1984 hit, Romancing the Stone . Kathleen Turner is wonderful as novelist Joan Wilder, who enlists the help of a rogue mercenary to help rescue her kidnapped sister in Colombia and ends up joining him on the search for a prized artifact.

Arnold Schwarzenagger in TheTerminator

Arnold Schwarzenegger (The Terminator)

The film that made Arnold Schwarzenegger the leading action movie hero of the 1980s remains his best action movie from the decade, as far as we are concerned. The Austrian bodybuilder gives a pitch-perfect, ice-cold performance as one of the best '80s movie villains — the cybernetic title role of James Cameron's The Terminator , which is sent from a war-torn future to prevent the birth of humanity's savior by killing his mother, Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton).

Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in Nine to Five

Jane Fonda (9 To 5)

After taking the '70s by storm as one of the decade's biggest and most acclaimed stars, Jane Fonda started off the 1980s right with 9 to 5 . In the hilarious workplace satire, her character, Judy Bernly, teams up with fellow office assistants Violet (Lily Tomlin) and Doralee (Dolly Parton) to turn the tables on their nightmare of a boss (played by Dabney Coleman).

Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man

Dustin Hoffman (Rain Man)

In his second Academy Award-winning performance, Dustin Hoffman plays autistic-savant Raymond Babbitt in Barry Levinson's Best Picture Oscar winner , Rain Man . He stars opposite Tom Cruise as his younger brother, Charlie, who gets to meet him for the first time in this beautiful family story from 1988.

Daryl Hannah in Wall Street

Daryl Hannah (Wall Street)

You can find Daryl Hannah in many of the '80s' most iconic cinematic classics but the cream of the crop would have to be Wall Street . She stars in Oliver Stone's riveting 1987 drama as Darien Taylor, who once shared a romance with corrupt stockbroker Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) and begins a relationship with his ambitious protege, Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen).
