Convenient to Contact Support Team

Ability to reach out to Bubblegum Co via instant messaging (WhatsApp) was fuss free. Responses from the team on my enquiries about their car insurance has been relatively quick so far. Only grievance is that promotions or freebies are not as attractive as before. I utilised a 10% promo code nonetheless. Use BBG240503 for 15% off through my referral if you’d like!

Value for money and good customer service

The insurance agent messaged immediately to take care of problems and to answer questions. Their customer service is excellent. I think it is the cheapest car insurance in Singapore. I compared with a few insurance companies and all of them were to charge me almost 65% more than the Bubblegum insruance company. I thinik it is a wise decision to get value for money without compromising coverage. Bubblegum wins the race.

Hi Ramachandran Srinivasan, Thank you for giving us a 5-star review. We are happy to have met your expectations. Regards, Bubblegum Customer Support

Kudos to Bubblegum

When I searched for a cheaper car insurance premium last year as I feel that it is well too expensive for me because I am a good driver and I never claim one cent from any insurance company in my 44 years of driving experience. I saw Bubblegum offered the lowest premium. But I was very skeptical as Bubblegum sounds unsophisticated if not hilarious and it's a newcomer. I accepted their proposal as it saved me money. The best part is they monitor my insurance expiry date and even offer me a further 10% discount for renewal yesterday. I am very impressed with the competitive and proactive customer focused strategy from Bubblegum. Well done Bubblegum. Thank you.

Excellent Service

It is good Kenneth not pnly takes the trouble to inform me my car insurance is expiring, he also goves a rough estimation of the next insurance charge and provides a link to renewal.Makes it very convenient to renew. I don't bother to check for the lowest market rate.

Price was the lowest, lower than Budget Direct

Price was the lowest, even lower than Budget Direct, but yet comprehensive enough to cover what's necessary. Agent needs to be more prompt in responding though, as have to write reminder emails to respond. Like the engine & gear free warranty thrown in

Pros & Cons

Cons: The cash rebate process seems a bit slow. The internet application was very slow. Pro: Prices seem to be competitive, and the only policy with the option to insure engine & gear box.

Price is competitive; saved couple of hundred $. Just need a little DIY to complete the online purchase. My previous insurer will usually call me & we finalise it over the phone. The customer service is prompt. Hope that after sales service will be prompt too.

2 faces of Bubblegum - the good, the bad and the ugly

Before purchase, response to queries was excellent and fast. However, after purchase when I enquire about the complimentary car servicing vouchers that was promised but not sent to me, there is no response from the same agent, sad! Perhaps a gimmick, cheat or empty promise - care to enlighten, Bubblegum! Addendum: The agent replied to me after the feedback. And to conclude: It's real! It's not a gimmick after all

Bought the motor insurance but cancelled it few months later so I sold the car and no long require the insurance. The refund does not tally with the number of months of coverage as there are additional admi n charges. Refund process took 2 months (and still counting) and they claimed manpower issue as an excuse. Paying them money is easy but getting from them is hard.

We Reviewed Singapore’s Cheapest Travel Insurance Plans: Which Is Best?

bubblegum travel insurance singapore

Cheap travel insurance can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it hurts to be paying for the what if’s, especially if you’re going on a budget trip.

On the other hand, you may as well not have any insurance at all if you choose the wrong provider.

To help you decide, we’ll outline:

  • Pricing to Value . We’ll look at all the budget-friendly travel insurance plans and compare the value that each offers.
  • Coverage . Check out the fine print on things like trip inconveniences. These are the little details that can result in a huge hassle, especially if you’re on a short trip and tight wallet.
  • Responsiveness & Ease of Claims . The real test is when you have to make a claim. Don’t just look at the coverage and pricing. Check out the insurer’s reputation for customer service as well.
  • Promotional Offers . These change from time to time, but we’ll mention any available.

Cheapest Insurance Plans for Travel: Which of These Are Worth Their Premiums?

For reference, we’ve used a hypothetical trip to Australia. Only plans under $40 for a weeklong trip qualified for our list of cheapest travel insurance.

We then sorted these packages by starting prices (accurate as of 12 Mar 2023):

We’ll dig into the details for each of these insurers next.

1. Tiq by Etiqa

bubblegum travel insurance singapore

Tiq by Etiqa

A member of the Maybank Group, Etiqa Insurance offers  a range of insurance products, including travel insurance, car insurance, and personal accident insurance.

It’s won several awards, including TripZilla’s Excellence Award for Best Travel Insurance in 2022, Best Online Buying Experience, and Most Popular Travel Insurance Company.

Pricing to Value?

Considering its wallet-friendly prices, we’d say Tiq’s coverage is more than adequate for short trips. Of noteworthy mention is the trip delay compensation: the industry average is per 6 hours of delay, but Etiqa offers compensation per 3-hour interval.

Note though: Etiqa keeps its pricing low by not including automatic COVID-19 coverage. You’ll have to pay for a separate add-on instead.

Responsiveness & Ease of Claims

Etiqa has had largely positive reviews from past customers, even for COVID-19 related claims. Most appreciate the company’s competitive pricing and coverage.

Many note that the travel insurance policies are easy to purchase online and that claims have been straightforward and efficient. Some customers have reported that they received reimbursement quickly and without hassle.

However, like any insurance company, Etiqa has also received a few negative reviews. Some customers have complained about the limitations and exclusions of the policies, such as not covering certain pre-existing medical conditions or adventurous activities like bungee jumping.

2. DirectAsia

bubblegum travel insurance singapore

You’ve probably seen DirectAsia’s many ads for car insurance. Question is, how good are their travel insurance policies?

For starters, DirectAsia’s trip inconvenience coverage seems inadequate. If your personal effects are lost or damaged, they’ll only cover up to $50 per article by default. (In comparison, FWD and Starr offer $400 per article, while ERGO offers $500.)

And while DirectAsia covers extreme sports, this is only available on their annual policies. COVID-19 coverage, meanwhile, is only for single trip policies. In other words: you can’t have both extreme sports and COVID-19 coverage. [ Full policy wording ]

You also won’t get a quarantine allowance or hospital allowance in the event you catch the virus while travelling.

DirectAsia’s reputation for travel insurance isn’t great; they seem to do well with car insurance claims, but not so much for travel ones. Most report their customer service being slow and unresponsive.

3. Bubblegum

Bubblegum is underwritten by Starr Insurance, so whatever you’ve heard about Starr also carries over for Bubblegum. While their website looks friendly, their policy wording leaves much to be desired: it’s unclear how much coverage you’ll get per article for lost/damaged personal effects, for example.

The nice thing about Bubblegum’s policies is that adventurous activities like scuba diving, skiing, and hot air ballooning are covered. You’ll also get automatic COVID-19 coverage, though this doesn’t extend to a quarantine allowance.

Notably, loss of or damage to your mobile phone isn’t covered under the policy.

Bubblegum doesn’t have many customer reviews, so take this with a grain of salt.

The few reviews there are of Bubblegum are a bit hit-and-miss. On the one hand, their own customer support staff seem accommodating and helpful; on the other hand, claims can be slow (or go totally unanswered) because of Starr Insurance’s reputation for unresponsive customer service.

None at the moment.

bubblegum travel insurance singapore

Starr Travelead

Starr’s TraveLead Insurance is an option that often comes up for budget travellers. But apart from the affordability and flexibility, most are better off paying slightly more for insurers with a better track record.

Starr Insurance doesn’t have the greatest reputation, to say the least. Run a quick search and you’ll see a whole slew of customer reviews that tell you to avoid them like the plague. But let’s see if there’s anything else to them:

Firstly: Starr’s plans don’t include baggage coverage by default. The weekly prices quoted include the add-on you’ll need for this.

Other than that though, their trip inconvenience coverage looks higher than average. Laptops are covered up to $1,400 (where $1,000 is the norm) and you’ll get rental vehicle excess included in all the plans.

Golfing equipment, cruises, and adventurous activities are separate purchasable add-ons.

Most insurance companies have a mix of positive and negative reviews. Starr, unfortunately, seems to be a provider that consistently garners negative reviews.

There are many reports of customer support not picking up their calls, and even more of claims submissions going unanswered. In one instance, a reviewer said that it had been six months and he’d yet to hear from them about the status of his claims.

Get an Airalo eSim with up to 3GB! (minimum premium S$60). Valid until 31 March 2024) + Receive an Apple AirTag worth S$45 with no minimum premium. (Valid until 25 March 2024) Click to apply .

Headquartered in Hong Kong, FWD has grown popular in recent years for its low-cost, easy-to-purchase insurance plans. They’ve been rapidly expanding in the Southeast Asian region and currently offer a range of car, travel, maid, and life insurance via their digital platforms (web and mobile).

FWD is a little pricier compared to the other cheap travel insurance plans, especially when you consider that COVID-19 coverage isn’t automatic. The add-on will cost another $19 or so, which means it’s not quite “cheap travel insurance” anymore.

That said, the add-on does come with a COVID-19 quarantine allowance (which the previous few providers didn’t offer), and the base plan itself also includes a hospital allowance for both overseas and locally.

Perhaps what makes FWD’s pricing more worth it is their largely positive track record. Of the thousands of reviews online, most report a good experience with the company, whether it’s with the initial purchasing process via the app/website or with their customer support staff.

Receive 8 Max Miles for every dollar spent or score an Airalo eSIM with up to 1GB data (minimum premium S$60) + Receive an Apple AirTag worth S$45 with no minimum premium

Underwritten by Chubb, Grab’s insurance policies are straightforward. You’ll pay $3.90 per day to travel in the ASEAN region, $5.10 for the APAC region, and $10 worldwide (minus Cuba). There’s no tiering for their policies: what you see is what you get. [ Policy wording ]

Grab keeps their premiums low by covering only key aspects. For example, you’ll only be covered if you seek medical treatment overseas, not if you get sick/injured while abroad and then return to Singapore for treatment. Rental vehicles, pre-existing conditions, adventurous activities, sports equipment, and so on are also not covered.

However, Grab’s “lite” insurance plans seem to be out of the norm for Chubb: many reviews complain that Chubb’s pricing is around 30% higher than the market average for the coverage it offers.

Besides Grab, Chubb underwrites a few other providers – DBS, for example. While no insurer has a perfect record, Chubb has a decent record for customer service and claims processing.

7. ERGO: International Brand Still Establishing Themselves Locally

Believe it or not, ERGO is probably the biggest company on this list. Headquartered in Germany, ERGO mostly operates in Europe. They acquired a local insurance company in 2014 and have slowly been establishing their presence in Asia.

Pricing to Value

ERGO may not be the cheapest travel insurance plan on our list, but it has a lot more thrown in than the other budget options.

All plans – including the most basic Essential plan – include aspects like adventurous activity cover, cruise cover, sports equipment cover, and rental vehicle excess. Most of the other providers require add-ons or a more expensive plan for the same coverage.

The one glaring omission? ERGO hasn’t updated their plans for automatic COVID-19 coverage. It’s also unclear whether you’ll get compensation like hospital allowances if you happen to catch the virus while travelling.

While ERGO is one of the biggest insurance providers in Europe with largely positive reviews, they’re still relatively unknown in Singapore.

And to be fair: there aren’t many accounts of people insuring with them, let alone successfully claiming any compensation. But if the few recent reviews are any indication, the local branch of ERGO is a solid insurer with a good record of paying out claims.

Introducing Bubblegum: 5 Things to Know About Our New Insurance Brand

claralim

Heard of Bubblegum yet? With its adorable artwork and super friendly user interface, you could very well mistake Bubblegum’s app and website for a cute mobile game… but it’s actually an insurance platform.

And it’s made by yours truly. That’s right, we at MoneySmart built an insurance platform! After helping consumers compare products and make smarter financial decisions for over a decade, Bubblegum was the logical next step for us.

Here’s what we’d like you to know about Bubblegum, your money-saving insurance companion.

1. What is Bubblegum?

Bubblegum isn’t just an app, it’s a complete digital insurance ecosystem. Translation: It was built to meet all of your insurance needs across every stage, from purchase to claims to payouts.

Bubblegum’s insurance policies aim to offer all the essential coverage you need at the best value possible. Say goodbye to the hidden T&Cs, bloated premiums and inflexible lock-ins so often found in conventional insurance policies. Bubblegum has done away with that toxic stuff. Instead, every policy is 100% transparent, so you know exactly what you’re buying.

The Bubblegum app and website have been designed to make managing insurance fun, simple and stress-free. We actually want people to enjoy the insurance experience, as far-fetched as that sounds.

2. Why was Bubblegum created?

Since 2009, MoneySmart has helped over 100 million people across Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Philippines compare financial products, save money and make smarter decisions.

During these 13 years, we’ve witnessed first-hand the frustrations many consumers have around insurance.

Most of us dread dealing with insurance. We know we “should”, but we don’t have the time or inclination to meet agents, go through piles of paperwork, wrap our heads around financial jargon, worry about missing the fine print, blah blah blah… not to mention the ordeal of having to submit a claim (that might get rejected!).

Despite scouring the insurance world for the best options for consumers, we’ve always felt our choices weren’t quite up to standard. If only WE could create our own products tailored to consumers’ actual needs — and completely reinvent the insurance user experience!

So we set about making that dream a reality. This involved a pretty long process of applying for MAS licenses and lots of paperwork, but we finally have everything in order. Finally, under the Bubblegum brand, we can start the insurance revolution we’ve always dreamed about.

3. What sets Bubblegum apart?

Here are 3 ways Bubblegum stands out from the pack:

Super affordable prices

Insurance is a basic financial need and should be priced accordingly. Unfortunately, agents often push pricey policies to maximise their commissions — making insurance seem like an unaffordable luxury. Bubblegum is here to change that.

In a quest to deliver the most bang for your buck, Bubblegum has affordable plans from as little as $4 a day for Travel Insurance , with no hidden costs like Covid coverage. Despite being light on your wallet, Bubblegum’s insurance policies are heavy on the coverage, created in partnership with Singapore’s top insurance providers to make sure you get the best deal possible.

Digital & instant

Can you believe some traditional insurers still require you to submit hard copy forms? Not acceptable in 2022, guys. You shouldn’t have to set aside an entire day to settle your insurance matters.

Bubblegum’s goal is to eliminate all the paperwork with a digital application process and hassle-free claims. The dream? Getting all your insurance admin sorted with just a few taps.

Flexible subscriptions

Consumers have already ditched long-term cable TV contracts and mobile phone lines in favour of no-commitment monthly subscriptions. Shouldn’t insurance be the same?

Bubblegum’s policies are also designed for flexibility where possible. Plans changed? Found something better? You can cancel your Bubblegum plan any time you want.

4. How does Bubblegum work?

bubblegum travel insurance singapore

Interested in a car insurance policy? You can get a quote in minutes in the Bubblegum app by syncing your details from SingPass. Thanks to MyInfo integration, Bubblegum can pull essential info like your age, household details, home address and so on to generate an accurate quote and a plan tailored just for you.

Then, apply for the plan instantly or customise your plan to your heart’s content with any optional add-ons. If you have questions, simply chat with our real-life team through the app.

Should you need to make a claim, all you need to do is to follow a few simple steps in the app or on the website, then sit tight and wait for your payout. Got a more complex claim to process? Bubblegum will take care of it for you.

5. What types of insurance are available on Bubblegum?

The plan is for Bubblegum to meet all of your insurance needs eventually. Currently, though, there are 3 types of insurance available or in the works:

Car Insurance (app exclusive)

Car insurance is compulsory in Singapore, so it’s pretty much unavoidable if you have a set of wheels. But that’s no reason to overspend on it.

With MoneySmart’s years of experience as car insurance brokers, we’ve designed a plan that’s perfect for car owners in every way. Underwritten by India International Insurance Pte Ltd , Bubblegum offers comprehensive coverage (including even the engine and gearbox!) for up to $300 less than top insurers in town*.

Travel Insurance (web exclusive)

Goodbye Covid, hello travel! Now that borders are open, travel insurance is a necessity once again. Bubblegum’s got an incredibly affordable plan from as little as $4 per day for a 7-day individual trip to Thailand, with Covid-19 coverage included so you can cruise through your holiday with peace of mind! It’s currently available first on Bubblegum.co or MoneySmart with a limited offer of 20% off your plan for the first 500 customers!*

Getting the Best Travel Insurance With COVID-19 Coverage in Singapore (2024)

If you’re one of those travellers waiting eagerly to check more places off your must-visit travel list, you’ll be happy to know that Singapore recently opened more vaccinated travel lanes (VTLs) — to Vietnam and Greece, as well as more cities in Malaysia, Indonesia and India. Quarantine-free air travel to about 32 countries becomes possible again, which also means that travel insurance is now relevant again.

It’s actually more important than before the COVID-19 pandemic as these days, the most likely mishaps to happen are related to COVID-19, whether they be an infection or a trip cancellation.

While not all travel insurers cover COVID-19, a handful provide decent coverage, to varying extents. Fret not if you’re planning a trip soon and are unsure of how to choose, what to look out for, or trying to find the cheapest travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage, we’re giving you a hand in picking a suitable plan with sufficient coverage. You can even tap on the MoneySmart comparison tool to compare the different travel insurance options available for your travels.

Masthead Image

How Much Does It Cost To Travel Now?

Before we dive into the details, here is a short clip that breaks down the cost to travel around in this new Covid-19 climate with the opening of many Vaccinated Travel Lanes (VTL).

What Should I Look Out For In A Travel Insurance Plan?

Are you deciding whether to get COVID-19 coverage as an add-on benefit to an existing insurance plan which you’ve already bought, or to get a totally brand new travel insurance package that is inclusive of COVID-19 coverage? This really depends on your preference, who you may be travelling with and what your current travel insurance company provides.

If you’re travelling with family members, then family travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage is definitely more apt. For those who are more particular about price range, the more affordable packages would probably be more suitable, and those who have pre-existing conditions would probably take up plans that cost slightly more or a lot more to provide that extra coverage for their health conditions in case of any emergencies.

Whatever needs you have for your travel insurance, there’s bound to be an increase of premiums due to the additional COVID-19 coverage benefits. So we’ve done the legwork for you in finding out which travel insurers are best known for which specific type of COVID-19 coverage.

How To Choose And Buy Travel Insurance With COVID-19 Coverage?

When selecting travel insurance plans for your holiday or business trips, it's important to consider additional factors beyond the standard coverage, especially in the context of current health concerns. For those who haven't purchased a plan yet, you have the option to buy COVID-19 coverage as an add-on to an existing policy or to select a new plan that includes these benefits, tailored to your individual needs and preferences. Here are a few steps to help you get going:

Check the visa requirements and vaccination documents needed

As most travellers who are travelling abroad and returning to Singapore are advised to be vaccinated and to purchase travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage, you need to be sure of your vaccination status and the specific prevailing entry and on-arrival or pre-arrival PCR or ART tests requirements of the country you’re travelling to.

Some countries may still include a requirement for you to be vaccinated before embarking on your trip. This will affect the travel insurance benefits you’ll receive as some travel insurers will not provide any cover if you’re refused entry to any location, just because you didn’t do your homework and check the destination’s entry requirements.

Be sure of any pre-existing conditions

There are only a few travel insurers out there who will cover you for claims relating to your pre-existing medical conditions such as pregnancy, injuries or illnesses sustained during the trip, this include COVID-19 related situations that may impact your pre-existing condition.

So for whatever pre-existing medical condition you have, you’ll have to look for a travel insurance plan with COVID-19 coverage which will give you in-patient hospitalisation expenses overseas coverage that allows you to claim for medical, surgical, nursing or hospital charges, emergency medical evacuation and repatriation coverage.

Check overall coverage including COVID-19 extension

Instead of deciding solely by price, you should compare the benefits and reimbursement limits for claims like COVID-19 related medical expenses, trip cancellations , flight delays and baggage theft and/or damage.

Compare policy premiums

How much your travel insurance costs depends on your destination and length of stay. Most travel insurance companies have 2 to 3 tiers of plans at different price points, with varying comprehensiveness and reimbursement limits.

Consider special activities coverage

The breadth of coverage needed largely depends on your itinerary. For instance, if you’re planning to go skydiving, make sure you get a policy that covers aerial sports like MSIG’s TravelEasy® Standard, Elite and Premier plans. Or if you’re going golfing overseas, pick a policy that insures your equipment.

Think about the trip duration

If you’re going for a short trip, then the single trip travel insurance plans will probably be more suitable. On the other hand, if you’re the kind who travels far and for months, it might be worthwhile to consider buying annual travel insurance.

Unlike single trip travel insurance, annual travel insurance often charges a flat premium and insures you for an entire year of travel. It usually costs about $200 to $300 per year, which may be better for a frequent traveller who is probably going to travel overseas more than 7 or 8 times a year, at least.

VTL countries

  • Get covered with travel insurance that has a minimum coverage of S$30,000 for COVID-19-related medical treatment and hospitalisation costs in Singapore, prior to travelling to Singapore
  • Been issued with a Vaccinated Travel Pass (Air)
  • Get fully vaccinated, and have an accepted proof of vaccination
  • Travelled to only one or more of the VTL countries/regions, and/or Singapore, in the last 14 consecutive days before departing for Singapore
  • Undergo a COVID-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test or Antigen Rapid Test (ART) within 48 hours before departure for Singapore (excluding children aged 2), at an internationally accredited or recognised laboratory, clinic, or medical facility, and obtain a test result certificate with the following: a negative COVID-19 test result, your name, and at least one other personal information such as your date of birth or passport number, the date and time when the COVID-19 test was taken, and the name of the testing institution that conducted the COVID-19 PCR test for you

Non-VTL countries

  • Have a valid approval of entry from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority of Singapore (ICA) as a short-term visitor, to be allowed to re-enter Singapore on non-VTL flights, but if you’re a Singapore Citizen (SC) or Permanent Resident (PR), you wouldn’t need an entry approval to enter Singapore

  • Serve a seven-day at your place of residence/self-sourced hotel/serviced apartment as a non-VTL traveller with a 7-day travel history to ICA’s list of Category II/III/IV countries/regions, and at the end of your SHN period, you’ll need to take a COVID-19 PCR test
  • Be exempted from pre-departure testing requirements but will still be subjected to all other prevailing border measures if you’re not fully vaccinated and recently recovered (i.e. within 14 to 90 days of your last COVID-19 infection)

What Does COVID-19 Travel Insurance Coverage Include?

Additional COVID-19 coverage benefits vary from insurer to insurer, but the primary aspects of coverage will often feature:

Overseas COVID-19 diagnosis quarantine allowance

A form of cash benefit you’ll receive for each consecutive day (up to 14 days) when you get quarantined overseas as a result of being diagnosed with COVID-19.

Overseas hospital cash due to COVID-19

Another type of cash benefit for each day (up to 14 days) in the situation whereby you are hospitalised overseas as a result of being diagnosed with COVID-19.

Medical coverage due to COVID-19

Coverage to help you cope with high medical costs in the event that you’re diagnosed with COVID-19 whilst on your overseas trip.

Coverage for trip cancellation/postponement due to COVID-19

If you or your immediate family member, or your travelling companion gets diagnosed with COVID-19, and it resulted in your trip being curtailed or disrupted or cancelled or postponed, you’ll be able to claim up to a certain amount, depending on the type of plan you purchased. For some travel insurance, an excess of a certain amount applies

Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation

You’ll be able to claim for emergency transportation allowance to a medical facility for treatment, when diagnosed with COVID-19 and/or sustained a serious injury due to COVID-19 while abroad.

What Are Not Included in COVID-19 Travel Insurance Coverage?

The general exclusions for most travel insurance plans with COVID-19 coverage are quite similar to plans without COVID-19 coverage prior to the pandemic, which include the following (but is not limited to):

Pre-Existing conditions

Most travel insurers do not cover pre-existing conditions such as pregnancy, heart problems, injury, etc, which you already have, and on top of that, you contracted COVID-19 during your trip, which may complicate your pre-existing condition.

Replacement of traveler or employee

Very few travel insurance plans offer claimable benefits for costs incurred for change of traveller due to you or insured person not being able to travel for the trip as a result of COVID-19 prior or during the trip.

Extreme sports / sports played in a professional or competitive capacity

Any form of sports which involves a high level of danger, specialised expertise, with highly specialised gear or stunts, such as big wave surfing, winter activities like luging, bobsleighing, skiing, snowboarding, canoeing down rapids, cliff jumping, horse riding, etc.

Any travel against prohibitions/acts/travel alerts/bulletins by any government or public authority (except for specific COVID-19 situations)

Conditions that threaten your safety as a traveller, which the government or public authority has officially warned travellers about, such as air, water, or other pollution, including thermal, biological, and nuclear pollution contamination, civil disorder or unrest, declared or undeclared acts of war, vice versa.

Illegal activities resulting in a conviction

Smuggling of drugs, human trafficking, manslaughter or other types of crimes

What Is The Average Cost Of A COVID-19 Travel Insurance Coverage?

To get you started, let’s use an example to illustrate (using MoneySmart’s round-up of the 6 best travel insurance plans with COVID-19 coverage in Singapore). Assuming that you’re planning to go for a 15-day holiday trip to America with your friends, and you’re getting a single trip insurance plan for yourself as you don’t really travel very often in a year.

As you compare across the 6 travel insurers’ benefits and premiums, the average cost of a travel insurance plan with COVID-19 coverage is about $122.

Estimated average cost of a travel insurance plan:

$67 + $67 + $172 + $116.35 + $161 + $148.80 = $732.15

$732.15 ÷ 6 = $122.03

So, if you’re looking at more cost-efficient options, Bubblegum, FWD, and Allianz may be more suitable. Moreover, the medical expenses coverage by Allianz is quite extensive with a hefty maximum limit of $1,000,000, the highest among the 6 providers. That’s if you’re looking for comprehensive coverage for medical expenses in the situation that you get diagnosed with COVID-19.

As for claiming benefits for trip cancellation if you’re down with COVID-19, Allianz, AIG and Income will provide higher coverage of up to $15,000 and $5,000 respectively for you.

7 Best Travel Insurance in Singapore for Different Needs (2023)

  • April 26, 2023

Around 150,000 people go through Changi Airport daily, and as common as people taking trips are, so do cases of flight delays, trip cancellations, and more. So, before heading to your dream destination, ensure you’re covered by travel insurance.

Depending on your plan, travel insurance providers can give you protection on your trips. Basic travel insurance is enough to keep you from experiencing certain hassles, such as losing baggage, but upgrading is all the better.

Since not all travel insurance is cut from the same cloth, comparing their plans is crucial to get the most protection abroad. This guide comprehensively compares the best travel insurance in Singapore to make decision-making easier for you.

Top Travel Insurance in Singapore

Singapore’s top travel insurance companies are FWD, Direct Asia, Bubblegum, Allianz, Singlife, Tiq, and MSIG travel insurance. The following sections will show how they compare against each other:

*Premium plan prices depend on whether you take the annual or single trip policy, the number of travelers, the destination, and the date of the trip

6 best travel insurance plans in singapore (aug 2024).

On my very first overseas trip without my parents, the airline lost my luggage for almost 24 hours.

I was headed to Madrid, Spain, and had a layover in Zurich, Switzerland. It was there (probably while I was drooling over gourmet Swiss chocolates in the airport) that my luggage somehow got left behind.

It caught up to me the next day, magically appearing at the reception area of my accommodation in Spain. Given the length of time that had elapsed, many people I later recounted this story to asked me, “did you get compensation from your insurance?”

Then 19-year-old me knew enough about the world to get travel insurance , but didn’t know enough to realise you need to submit a claim in order to get compensation for delayed luggage. So no—sadly, I didn’t get a cent.

But that’s just my story of travel mishaps. All things considered, there are plenty of ways a vacation could go awry. Delayed luggage could end up being completely lost luggage. And that’s before we consider  flight delays , falling ill overseas, getting pickpocketed, and more.

That’s why travel insurance is the next most important thing besides your flight ticket. Find out how to choose a plan, what to look out for, and the cheapest travel insurance you can buy with our comparison of the best travel insurance in Singapore and their ongoing promotions.

3. FWD travel insurance

FWD travel insurance offers some of the cheapest travel insurance plans in Singapore, so this is a budget-friendly option which still offers you great value for every dollar. I like that coverage for emergency medical evacuation is unlimited for all tiers, and overseas medical expenses go up to a generous $1,000,000.

Here’s a quick run-through of the price and benefits offered by FWD travel insurance plans:

When you’re purchasing FWD travel insurance, the COVID-19 benefits are an add-on. The price of the COVID-19 add-on costs between $11 to $22  depending on the part of the world you’re travelling to. If you choose to add it on, it’ll give you comprehensive coverage of the following:

Trip disruption

Trip cancellation

Overseas hospital cash

Hospital cash while in Singapore

Medical expenses

Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation

The plan reimburses your travel-related expenses if you are diagnosed with COVID-19 no more than 30 days before your scheduled departure date, or if you have to change your itinerary because of a COVID-19 diagnosis while overseas. You also get to claim medical expenses and a hospital cash benefit if you get hospitalised overseas or for up to 14 days in Singapore upon your return.

On top of that, there’s also an automatic policy extension of up to 21 days should you be prevented from travel as per foreign government regulations due to:

You contracting COVID-19; or

You or your travel companion needing to be self-isolated due to being in close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19

4. Starr travel insurance

Starr’s travel insurance   Starr TraveLead Comprehensive is a leader in terms of how customisable their insurance is. When signing up, medical coverage (including COVID-19 coverage) is automatically included in all plans, but you can choose whether or not you want to add trip coverage (e.g. document loss, travel delay) and baggage coverage (e.g. baggage delay). Then, you can also easily add riders for Golf Protection, Cruise Vacation, Scuba Diving, and Snow Sports.

Starr TraveLead Comprehensive comes in 2 tiers: Gold  and  Silver . The  Silver tier affords you an adequate $500,000 overseas medical coverage, as well as $30,000 medical coverage for COVID-19 and $250 coverage for COVID-19 related trip curtailments and cancellations.

Here are the prices and coverage amounts for each tier. Prices are given with trip coverage included in the plan.

Note: Starr also has a travel insurance called Starr TraveLead Essential, which also comes in  Silver and Gold tiers. They look very attractive because of their low prices—for example, Starr TraveLead Essential Silver costs just $34 for a 7-day trip to an ASEAN destination.

However, unless you’re on a really tight budget, I wouldn’t recommend these plans because of their more limited coverage. For example, while the Starr TraveLead Essential Silver plan does cover you for $500,000 worth of overseas medical expenses, it doesn’t cover you at all for trip cancellation and loss/damage of baggage.

5. MSIG travel insurance

MSIG travel insurance is categorised into 3 plans— Standard , Elite , and Premier . The cheapest, basic plan still offers pretty adequate coverage in medical emergencies and trip cancellations or delays.

Here’s a quick run-down of the plan’s key benefits:

One more unusual area of coverage that MSIG includes is emergency dental expenses. You get $5,000 to $15,000 in coverage, depending on the travel insurance tier you select.

MSIG’s Areas A and B refer, roughly speaking, to ASEAN and Asia respectively. Here’s a more comprehensive list of the countries in each category:

Area A : Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, East and West Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

Area B : Australia, China (excluding Inner Mongolia and Tibet), Hong Kong, India, Japan, Macau, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and all those in Area A.

Area C : Worldwide, including territories in Areas A and B.

MSIG travel insurance’s COVID-19 coverage is an automatic inclusion to its travel insurance plans and offers coverage such as trip cancellation, overseas medical expenses, and overseas quarantine daily cash allowance, but excludes daily hospital cash allowance.

6. Singlife travel insurance

Singlife travel insurance comes in 3 tiers— Lite , Plus , and Prestige . The price you pay and the coverage you’ll get increase with each plan.

Here are Singlife travel insurance’s key prices and benefits:

On top of the coverage above, Singlife also covers you for chiropractor and/or Chinese physician treatment : $250 ($50 per visit) for Lite, $500 ($75 per visit) for Plus, and $1000 ($100 per visit) for Prestige.

While Singlife travel insurance’s coverage is quite comprehensive, we have to dock some points for the lack of overseas hospital cash allowance and pretty low COVID-19 trip cancellation coverage.

Also, do note that the lowest tier, Lite, doesn’t come with certain coverage, such as trip cancellation or postponement for any reason.

7. Etiqa Travel Insurance

Do you hate making travel insurance claims? I do. That’s why when a friend of mine told me that you don’t need to make any claim on Etiqa to receive compensation for your flight delay, I was very intrigued.

I’ve been fortunate—all my recent flights have left on time. But from what I’ve heard from friends who weren’t as lucky on their recent travels, it’s true that Etiqa has the most seamless claim process for flight delays . All you need to do is enter your flight details when purchasing your insurance. Etiqa will monitor your flight and know if your flight is delayed (to count as a delay, it needs to be pushed back at least 3 consecutive hours). If that happens, they’ll transfer money into your Etiqa TiqConnect eWallet—even if you don’t submit a claim! You can then encash that sum via PayNow.

On top of this travel delay claim benefit, Etiqa also provides flight check-in reminders and baggage belt collection details via SMS when you land. I experienced this myself when I bought Etiqa’s travel insurance for my trip to the UK this year. Now that’s what I call service.

Etiqa’s travel insurance is called Tiq Travel Insurance  and comes in 3 tiers: Tiq Entry , Tiq Savvy , and Tiq Luxury . Here are their costs and coverage components:

Tiq Entry is sufficient to give you essential coverage for travel disruptions. But if you’ve just a little more to spend, go for Tiq Savvy . This will more than double your coverage limit for overseas medical expenses from $200,000 to $500,000 for just an additional $5 a week—that’s less than $1 a day.

The only disadvantage to Tiq travel insurance is that COVID-19 coverage is not included in the base price and you’ll have to pay for their optional  COVID-19 Add-On  (from $18/week) to be covered. Some people might say this is an advantage—it gives you a greater degree of flexibility to decide if you want to have COVID-19 coverage or not, especially as COVID-19 becomes less and less prevalent. However, the fact remains that you need to pay extra for it compared to travel insurance plans where COVID-19 coverage is already included.

8. Cheapest travel insurance in Singapore

When I buy travel insurance, I don’t really care whether the insurer has 900 years of experience or if the plan comes with extra coverage for Chanel bags. Just give me the cheapest travel insurance plan can  l iao !

If that sounds like you too, you’ll be glad to know we’ve done the legwork for you. After assessing the most popular travel insurers in Singapore, the honour of cheapest travel insurance in Singapore goes to… Zurich travel insurance .

Covers up to S$100,000 for accidental death and permanent disablement and S$500,000 for personal liability.

Covers up to S$50,000 for overseas medical expenses incurred during your trip.

Complimentary Covid-19 coverage up to S$50,000 for overseas medical expenses due to Covid-19. Protecting you against unexpected expenses and disruptions caused by the pandemic.

Enjoy 24/7 worldwide emergency travel assistance for medical emergencies, lost documents, or travel guidance.

But as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. Will you regret being a cheapskate and lose out on important coverage if the only number you look at is the price?

In a way, yes. Because Zurich travel insurance  may be the cheapest option, but its medical coverage is shockingly low. The lowest tier plan,  Zurich Travel Insurance Basic , only comes with $50,000 of overseas medical coverage. I have never seen any plan with lower coverage for this category!

Zurich Travel Insurance Prestige maxes out their medical coverage at a $250,000 . You don’t need to do a lot of research to realise that this is pretty dismal for a plan that will cost you $51 for a 7-day ASEA trip.

Let’s just look at the next cheapest travel insurance for comparison. FWD Premium, FWD’s lowest tier travel insurance plan, costs $33 for $200,000 overseas medical coverage. FWD First comes with a whopping $1,000,000  overseas medical coverage for $57 .

25% Off Total Premium S$35.35

FWD Premium

Optional add on coverage available for pre-existing Medical Conditions for Single Trips plans (up to 30 days) with S$50,000 coverage for medical expenses incurred overseas and 50% co-payment for trip cancellation, postponement and more!

Zurich travel insurance’s other components, such as trip cancellation coverage and coverage for lost or damaged baggage, are better. But its lacking medical coverage is a big turn-off for me. So I would only recommend you consider Zurich if you’re more interested in non-medical coverage.

At the end of the day, ask yourself what specific travel insurance coverage you want to have, and assess the travel insurance options to find one that suits your needs.

Need some help? Read our travel insurance guide to understand all you need to know about choosing the best travel insurance. Don’t forget to use our travel insurance comparison tool to seamlessly compare plans across different providers in Singapore. We also have a comparison tool for travel insurance in Hong Kong !

What about the discounted prices?

Travel insurers have “limited-time” discounts all the time. This is no secret. It does, however, make it difficult to compare prices when an expensive plan is on 40% off but a cheaper one is on 10% off. That’s why for the table above, we compared base prices without discounts .

But when you take into account promotional prices, which plan is the cheapest? There’s no need to open a million tabs to compare every travel insurance plan out there. Just use our travel insurance comparison tool  with the “Lowest Price” filter on. You’re welcome!

BubbleGum is using India International Insurance ( III ) as an underwriter. I compare my own III car insurance price quote and it is even lower than what they offered.

Hi all, I actually work at Bubblegum and would love to answer any questions you might have!

  • Bubblegum is a new brand in town that was created by MoneySmart Group to be a customer-first Insurance experience that is 100% completely digital
  • We worked on creating the best value insurance products that provide great coverage at an excellent price
  • As our number 1 priority is customer satisfaction, we actually have a 24/7 dedicated claims teams for any and all car insurance claims! Not only do we walk our customers through the claims process, but we also provide mobile reporting, towing services, and other services related to accidents
  • How are we so price competitive? Since we are 100% digital, we are able to save a lot of money on processing and administration expenses that we then pass on to our customers.
  • Jun 30, 2023

@Pandamoves123 what does it mean to be underwritten by India International Insurance? I previously purchased a travel policy from Starr - which underwrites Bubblegum's travel policy - and I had a poor experience with Starr. Obviously III and Starr are not the same (I hope), but how does the underwriter affect the claims experience of Bubblegum?
