Madakaripura Waterfall Bromo (Air Terjun Madakaripura) is one of the most amazing and one of the tallest waterfall in Indonesia. The Madakaripura Waterfall located in Sapih village, Lombang district, East Java, Indonesia. It is not far from Mount Bromo area in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

Madakaripura Waterfall is a sacred visiting area comprising lines of waterfalls that reach a height of 200 metres (660 ft). This spectacular waterfall lies hidden at the end of a deep valley in the foothills of the Tengger range.

This waterfall is not typical for Southeast Asia. Usually they are small and are not impressive, mostly they look like natural SPA than miracles of nature. But Madakaripura is really majestic and ruthless. The gorge around highlights the power of falling water. The place looks mysterious.

The primary attraction is its natural environment that is encircled by seven waterfalls and caves. The available facilities are include a parking lot, food stalls, a resting place, and a security post.

A legend of this falls is connected with the name of Gadjah Mada, who was a prime minister of the largest Javanese empire Majapahit. In 1355 Vuruk Khayyam an emperor of Majapahit gave lands in the area to the prime minister. Gadjah Mada refused revenues from these lands until he unite all Indonesia lands under Majapahit flag.

According to ancient Javanese 14th century epic poem, Negarakretagama, Madakaripura was a piece of land given to Commander Gajah Mada by the Majapahit King Hayam Wuruk. Gajah Mada himself is the most celebrated military commander in the history of the great Javanese Majapahit Kingdom that thrived between 1293 to 1500AD. Its commander is recognized as the main figure who succeeded in unifying the entire Indonesian Archipelago then under the huge Majapahit empire (that at the time was said to stretch until Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Southern Thailand , the Philippines and East Timor) under his famous oath the “Sumpah Palapa”.

It is said that the source of his overwhelming power and abilities lie within the cave of the Madakaripura Waterfall, where Gajah Mada frequently came to meditate. The great commander eventually chose the place as his last place for mediation before he was believed to have been –what ancient Javanese believed- “Muksha” – or vanished spiritually and physically from the face of the earth, rather than just dying physically. To honor this legacy, many people still visit the Falls to meditate or perform rituals, especially on the eve of 1 Suro, the Javanese New Year. As a place that is historically significant, culturally sacred, and naturally spellbinding, Madakaripura is simply a must, when you visit East Java. It’s believed that swimming in the Madakaripura falls give health, strength and youth.

How to get to Madakaripura Waterfall

There is no public transportation that go to the waterfall. So you can either rent a car. Since the site is located near the Bromo volcano, the travel to Madakaripura Fall usually combine with a trip to the valley of volcanoes in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park and journey to the Kawah Ijen Volcano

Usually the traveler who will visit Mt Bromo from Surabaya or Probolinggo will visit Madakaripura Water to complete their holiday in Java Indonesia. From Surabaya to the parking area of the waterfall takes about 3 hours driving and from Probolinggo the drive will take you about an hour.

How to get around Madakaripura Waterfall

To get to the canyon for the waterfall, you have to walk about one kilometer (The trail is paved) along a Mountain river. And then around 500 meters along the river under other four waterfalls. The road goes through rock under cold waterfall.

So prepare raincoats, camera protection and comfortable shoes which are going to be totally wet. It’s better to roll up your pants and jeans because the depth of the river can be up to the knee.

The local people offer everything you may need on parking such as umbrellas, raincoats, slippers and guide service, and there will be local guide at Madakaripura, you can use their service to help you to get to the Waterfall. He will help to cross the river and insure in dangerous areas. The price is about IDR 100,000 – 150,000/group for a guide

Fyi: You will inevitably get wet visiting this waterfall, so bring a raincoat or an umbrella. You can also buy disposable ponchos and plastic bags for your valuables at stalls along the trekking path. You can find warungs on the parking lot and after the bridge where “dry path” ends. A toilet is available only on the parking lot.

When is the best time to visit Madakaripura Waterfall?

You could visit the Madakaripura Waterfall in dry season from Apr to Oct, anytime is a good time but you have to check the local wheater. It’s also better to visit Madakaripura falls in the morning, because in the afternoon rains passed in the mountains can turn the small mountain river into a roaring stream, and trees can fall down from the 200-meters height to the pool of the main waterfall.

• Travel 3 hours to Madakaripura Waterfall.
• Explore Madakaripura Waterfall.
• Travel 1 hour and check into Bromo Terrace Hotel & Resto . You will stay here for 1 night (we will use another hotel of the same standard if this is not available).
• Pick up from Bromo Terrace Hotel at 2am for Mount Bromo Sunrise.
• Travel 1 hour via a private 4WD jeep to Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.
• Have a light meal at a nearby shop before hiking.
• Hike for 10–15 minutes to reach the sunrise viewpoint.
• Watch the spectacular sunrise (There are 4 other viewpoints nearby. Our guide will bring you to the viewpoint that is less crowded – all have similar views).
• Return to the 4WD jeep after sunrise and travel 30 minutes to the Sea of Sand.
• Cross the Sea of Sand to reach the rim of Bromo Crater. You can walk 30–45 minutes or ride on a horse (optional, horse-riding fee is not included).
• Climb 250 flight of stairs for 10–15 minutes to reach the rim of Bromo Crater .
• Return to Cemoro Lawang at around 8–9am and transfer back to a private car.
• Return back to the hotel to freshen up and enjoy breakfast. You’ll check out by 12pm. 
• Travel 4–5 hours to Bondowonso (Ijen area).
• Check into Grand Padis Hotel . You will stay here for 1 night (we will use another hotel of the same standard if this is not available).

• Pick up from your accommodation at 7pm 
• Travel to Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park to see the Milkyway and stay there until sunrise.

• Pick up and check out from the hotel at 12am . (We will pick you up at 2am if the blue fire is closed)
• Travel 2 hours to Paltuding area . 
• Hike for 2–3 hours to the summit of Mount Ijen.
• Hike another 45 mins from the peak of Mt Ijen to the bottom of the Ijen lake, where you can see the famous Blue Fire of Ijen . (Kindly note that sighting of the Blue Fire is dependent on weather and is not guaranteed).
• Finish hiking at Mount Ijen  by 8–9 am.
• Travel 6–7 hours back to Surabaya City.
• Drop off at your hotel in Surabaya / Juanda International Airport / Surabaya Train Station 1 hour before your train departs or 2 hours before your flight departs.

• Take a 1 hour ferry from Ketapang Port (Banyuwangi) to Gilimanuk Port (Bali)

This is the most popular itinerary among the customers. However, if you want to add, change or skip some attractions, we can customise itinerary for you. All the attractions and activities are optional, you can always skip if you don’t want to go. You can leave a note when you check out or tell our guide in the tour.

The entrance fees have various pricing i.e. foreigner, local rate, peak prices etc. It would be better that the customer pay on the spot depending on his/her nationality. Also, it will solve the refund issue if you choose not to go to the attraction when you are on the tour.

Return airport transfer service is included. We would pick you up at Surabaya airport on your arrival time on day 1. If you are already in Surabaya, we would pick you up at your hotel at around 9am instead. 

The nearest international airport to Mount Bromo is Surabaya Juanda International Airport.

You can also start the tour from Bali or Yogyakarta.

Generally, our tours are all inclusive except for Entrance fee/s and meals (lunch & dinner) during the tour.

For lunch and dinner expenses, you can budget it at around 50,000 rupiah/meal or about 5SGD/meal or 4USD/meal. It greatly depends on what you order and where you dine.

As for the entrance fees, we usually state in the tour details or you can pay through us first as a selected option.

Yes. Kindly chat with us for the best date to see the Milky Way.  You will be picked up around 10pm instead of 2:30am. You will head to a nearby peak such as Mount Pananjakan, Mentigen Hill, Kingkong Hill or Seruni Point where you can view the Milky Way. Avid photographers should bring suitable camera equipment such as tripod for Milky Way Photography. You would then continue with the standard itinerary for sunrise views over Mt Bromo. The extra cost is SGD50/pax.

It cost around 100K IDR for one way trip to cross the sand sea on a horse. For a return trip, it will cost around 200K IDR. Note that the horse ride ends close to the start of the stairs to Mt Bromo crater. You will still have to climb the flight of steps up to the crater. Horse ride is entirely optional and you can also walk across the sand sea which most visitors do. Do negotiate with the horsemen to try to get a better deal.

No. Mount Bromo area is very dark and cold in the night. For the safety concern, we don’t allow the customers to hike solely on foot rather than taking the Jeep. 

Sunglasses and sunblock lotion are highly recommended – the sun rays can be harsh and at high altitude, it is easy to get sunburnt even though the surrounding temperature is cold. The terrain is very sandy– wearing a face mask is also recommended for protection. (Akin to walking in a desert). If you are visiting the waterfalls, please bring along wet gears (swim suits with t-shirt and shorts, booties/sandals, spectacle hooks, waterproof cover for camera which can be secured to your body, change of clothes, towel).

Our vehicle will drop you at the parking lot of Madakaripura Waterfalls where you will hop to a motorbike (Ojek) for a short 5 – 10 minutes ride to the entrance. Then you need to do a short trek of around 30 – 45 minutes to reach the waterfalls.

Swimming is no longer allowed at the waterfalls since 2018. But you will still get wet from the water. For footwear, we recommend covered rubber shoes like Crocs.  Sandals/slippers with good grips are also fine but please be careful not to hit any rocks.

To fully enjoy the majestic beauty of Mount Bromo, one of Indonesia’s most famous volcanoes, it is recommended to embark on a guided tour. Most Mount Bromo tours start early in the morning, allowing you to witness the stunning sunrise from King Kong Hill or other popular viewpoints. Mount Bromo Madakaripura Waterfall Tour Package – The waterfall place with a height of approximately 200 meters and the place around  Mt Bromo located in Negororejo village Lumbang district Probolinggo regency. The waterfall is the highest in Java island even the second highest in Indonesia. Madakaripura waterfall has a niche like a well surrounded by a hill with water dripping on a cliff like rain.

• Drive to Cemoro lawang village for about one and half hours driving

  Day 2 : Mount Bromo Tour  –   Surabaya or Malang City

• Wake aup at 2:30 am to go to the most famous view point in the world at Mount Pananjakan ( 2,770 asl ) of the Tengger Caldera for mount bromo sunrise. Enjoy take pictures and watch the sunrise of mount bromo and panorama caldera, Mt Batok, Mt Bromo active and the highest Mountain in Java, Mt Semeru ( 3,676 asl ) will release smoke every 20 minutes. Once satisfie with the sunrise, return to the jeep driving down to cross the sea of sand to go to Bromo carter and than back to cemoro lawang

So why are people not as familiar with this natural beauty? Well, it is slightly off the beaten track and not as well known to the conventional tour companies.

We stumbled upon this incredible watery gem while in search of a Mount Bromo tour . When I saw the pictures, I was absolutely stunned . However, if I must be COMPLETELY HONEST – The pictures don’t do it justice

Where is Madakaripura Waterfall?

Madakaripura waterfall is located in Sapih, Branggah, Lumbang, Probolinggo, East Java. It is in the Tengger Semeru National Park. The closest major city to this location would be Surabaya or Malang.

The Madakaripura Malang journey is approximately 120 km and the Madakaripura Surabaya trip is approximately 116 km. This makes it a great stop on your way to Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park from Surabaya. Check out the Madakaripura Map on Google Maps

TRAVELIST TIP:  The easiest and most convenient way to get there is to do a Madakaripura waterfall Probolinggo East Java tour. A Bromo Ijen Madakaripura tour would be my suggestion – It’s the one we actually chose. Seeing Madakaripura waterfall, Mount Bromo and Ijen crater were truly the highlights of our East Java adventure.

Our journey began after a 4-hour train journey to Surabaya from Yogyakarta. The train journey was great and it was a lovely way to see a bit more of Indonesia. We have just spent a wonderful 5 days exploring the cultural haven of Yogyakarta which noticeably involved visiting the UNESCO world heritage sites of Borobudur and Prambanan temples .

How to Get to Madakaripura Waterfall

Here are a few other ways to get to Surabaya:

Jakarta to Surabaya

✈️ OPTION 1: The fastest way is to take a flight from Soekarno-Hatta International (CGK) to Surabaya Juanda Airport (SUB). 🚉 OPTION 2: Taking the train , the train trip travel time will take 9 hours so if you have the time to spare, this could be an option for you. It was comfortable, air-conditioned, and pretty cheap .

TRAVELIST TIP: In Indonesia, there are a number of domestic airlines (Batik and Lion Air, Scoot, Citilink, Garuda etc) . Some more reliable than others, but due to the fact that there are so many there’s always plenty of flights on special. It’s very likely that you can find a flight at the same price you’d pay for a train ticket .

Bali to Surabaya

✈️ OPTION 1: The fastest way would be to take a flight from Bali Ngurah Rai (DPS) to Surabaya Juanda Airport (SUB). 🚌🚢🚊OPTION 2: The long way is to do a bus, ferry, and train route. Take the bus from Terminal Mengwi to Gilimanuk port. Take the ferry to Gili Ketapang. From Ketapang, the train station is a few minutes walk away, take the train from Ketapang to Surabaya Gubeng train station.   

Yogyakarta to Surabaya

✈️ OPTION 1: Fly from Yogyakarta Airport (YIA) or Adisutjipto Airport (JOG) to Surabaya Juanda Airport (SUB). 🚊 OPTION 2: Train from Yogyakarta to Surabaya Gubeng Train station (approximately 4-5 hours) 🚌 OPTION 3: The bus option (approximately 8 hours) from Yogyakarta Giwandan to Terminal Purabaya Bus station and transfer to Waru train station and take the train to Surabaya Gubeng station.

As it was a last-minute addition to our itinerary (we were actually booked for a Tumpak Sewu Waterfall Bromo Ijen tour) , we weren’t too sure what to expect and were not sure if we were even in the right attire, chances are WE WERE NOT, so a quick in-car change into shorts and flip flops was required!

What to Wear to Madakaripura Waterfall

So since we weren’t prepared, I’d suggest wearing something waterproof or that you don’t mind getting a bit wet, shorts and a tee with swimwear under would be best.

What to Pack for Madakaripura Waterfall

So in order to be better prepared for the trip, I wish I had the following readily available in a backpack on arrival:

👟 Flip flops or aqua boots (preference to aqua boots)

👚 Change of clothes

📸 Go Pro or waterproof camera

☔ Raincoat or Anorak

TRAVELIST TIP: We did find that they did sell umbrellas, flip flops, dry bags, and plastic raincoats at the entrance to Madakaripura waterfalls, as well as at a little stall closer to the waterfalls itself – just in case you don’t have the opportunity to change.

Madakaripura Waterfall Entry Fees

When you arrive at the parking lot, there are a few fees to pay. Firstly, a parking fee, then a fee for a short motorbike ride to the entrance of the waterfall walk  (there is the option to walk it, but the back of a bike seemed far more appealing than braving the humidity and lastly an entrance fee for Madakaripura).

💵 Madakaripura Entrance fee:  IDR 20 000

☔ Raincoat fee:  IDR 10 000 to 20 000

In total paying IDR 50 000 to 60 000 for this experience is BEYOND WORTH IT 🤩!

💡 PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:  These prices may differ as we had our fees paid as part of our tour so I’m estimating based on research and word of mouth. Ideally, it shouldn’t cost foreigners more than IDR 50 000 to 60 000 per person.

Do I need a guide at Madakaripura Waterfall?

There’s also the option of having a guide vs going it alone. There honestly isn’t anything technical about getting to Madakaripura waterfall, but we opted for having a guide walk with us to the falls

💡 PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:  I tend to opt for using guides for places that aren’t as well known or that I don’t have much research into. It makes travel feel a bit more authentic. The other reason is that it’s always a great thing to support local guides and know you are contributing to the economy.

His English was super minimal and I had only been living in Indonesia for a month so my Bahasa Indonesia was equally minimal but we got on perfectly fine !

Motorcycle Ride to the Waterfall Starting Point

We first took a motorbike ride to the Madakaripura waterfall trek entrance. This involved us hopping onto the back of the driver’s bike and taking a wonderful ride through the Madakaripura forest park clearings.

Along the way, we saw beautiful lush and green tropical plants as well as many bee-keeping structures. The ride is short and fun, there are no helmets, but no element of discomfort or feelings of being unsafe either. It’s not a snail crawl but it’s not a Ferrari sprint either.

Madakaripura Waterfall Hike – Not so much

Once you arrive at the Madakaripura waterfall entrance, the walk begins. The walk to the falls is anything but technical. In saying that it is a bit of a walk, mostly flat and paved until you get within 50 metres of the falls.

The walk will take you through the most beautiful walled jungle coverings. The most stunning plants and fauna cover high mountain edges. It was an absolute pleasure . Although I don’t do well in the humidity, I manage to take it all in my stride, a shower and hotel is a short drive away and the trek is well worth the treasure in the end.   

Along the way, we also saw some incredible creepy crawlies, not my thing, but these spiders were pretty huge, minding themselves and weaving these giant webs, it is incredible and terrifying to watch (hence why I move on quite swiftly from there) .

You then reach the point where it’s time to don your raincoat. I definitely would’ve preferred to be in swimwear and dabble a bit in the puddles and streams but nonetheless, we donned our raincoats.

The walk into the Madakaripura waterfall area is truly enchanting.

I felt like I was in another world.

Like a secluded jungle (this hidden gem that few knew of) it’s absolutely breathtaking.

I’ve never seen a waterfall structure anything like it.

There is a mesmerizing feature of water curtains covering the path which you have to pass, It truly feels like an invigoration of body and soul.

Madakaripura graciously showered us with a steady mist, making getting wet quite pretty inevitable. The path then ends in a dream-like cavernous valley where the astounding 200 m waterfall climaxes the experience.

Madakaripura Waterfall is dubbed as the highest waterfall in Java and the second tallest waterfall in Indonesia after Sigura-gura Waterfall near Lake Toba, North Sumatra.

While the waterfall’s height is by itself already a marvel, the ambience around the area is truly something that needs to be experienced first-hand to capture its essence.

Surrounded by terrifically high rock walls, the Madakaripura waterfall flows down into a mystical natural chamber. Inside the chamber, sunlight shines through onto the lush green damp moss on the rocky walls creating an incredible natural ecosystem for plant life .

Decorated with huge rocks, endlessly tumbling water streams, and glistening moss, one only needs to gaze up to the distant sky and immerse oneself in the spellbinding beauty of nature.

I’m literally still in awe thinking back to this incredible beauty.

He showed us tricks I never knew a phone was capable of. He took portrait panoramas and somehow managed to teach us how to get a shot of two people in a panorama in two different locations (but at the same place?)

How Long to Spend at Madakaripura Waterfall

You can easily spend a few hours at this spot. Whether you are snapping up as many photos as you can or simply just sitting and admiring.

I would undoubtedly consider this to be the best waterfall in East Java. We, unfortunately, were pressed for time to get to our next destination so we only spent about an hour at the falls. It still was more than enough time to deem it the most enchanting waterfall I’d ever seen.

Madakaripura Waterfall vs Tumpak Sewu Waterfall?

I would hope that this entire article serves as a Madakaripura waterfall review , but this is a difficult one, I would definitely say you would be doing yourself a disservice by only visiting one.

The waterfalls are so different in their entirety and feel. I definitely felt like I was in an enchanted magical place at Madakaripura waterfall in East Java Indonesia, the lush greenery and moss-covered rocks were something from a storybook. Whereas Tumpak Sewu waterfalls leave a feeling of awe at the sheer grandeur of the rock’s face height and tumbling streams of countless mini waterfalls.

April to October (dry season) the falls are closed during rainy season for safety reasons.

I’d say you need to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting wet – quick-dry clothing and swimwear underneath. Also, wear flip flops or aqua boots for Madakaripura waterfall. What to wear is typically what you’d wear for Tumpak Sewu Waterfall. You can purchase a disposable raincoat at many vendors along the pathway to the Madakaripura Falls or at the entrance. Have a towel ready after the journey to dry off too.

2/10 flat easy walk along paved pathway along with taking a motorbike to the entrance of the Madakaripura waterfall trek. The rocks and surfaces at the falls can be slippery so caution must always be taken.

From personal preference: we liked having a guide and contributing to the local economy, he went ABOVE AND BEYOND to make our trip safe and memorable and he was a photo wizard when it came to capturing perfect pictures.

I’d say you could spend between 1 to 2 hours there (including the walk and motorbike ride). The Madakaripura waterfall opening hours are 8:00 to 16:00.

Madakaripura actually isn’t on a specific tour route but is often combined with seeing other attractions in East Java. I would highly recommend starting the starting point of your tour being picked up from Surabaya and visiting Madakaripura waterfall and then doing the Mount Bromo Sunrise hike. If you are specifically looking at doing this attraction without combining it with another attraction, then it would be easiest to hire a car and driver in Surabaya and make the 3-hour drive to Madakaripura, once you reach Madakaripura, you can purchase an entrance ticket and get a guide at the entrance too. Madakaripura waterfall weather is similar to that of most parts of Indonesia. It’s hot and humid whilst walking up to the falls, but at the waterfall itself, it’s refreshing and cool due to the cavernous nature of the falls and the steady stream of waterfall mist in the area.

Yes, swimming in the waterfall pool is however at your own risk. I am unsure as to the depths of the pool and there are most certainly no lifeguards or safety precautions if you do fall in.

Mount Bromo

Bromo is an active volcano in East Java, Indonesia, located in the Tengger Mountains. At 2,329 meters (7,641 feet), it is not the highest peak in the massif, but it is the most famous. Madakaripura Waterfall is a waterfall in East Java's Probolinggo District. This 200-meter-tall waterfall is Java's tallest and Indonesia's second-tallest. The lake is the site of a labor-intensive sulfur mining operation, in which sulfur-laden baskets are carried from the crater floor by hand. The work is well compensated in comparison to the cost of living in the area, but it is physically demanding. Workers earn about US$13 per day and must transport sulfur chunks three kilometers to the nearby Paluding Valley to be compensated.

Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park is in East Java, Indonesia.

This national park is named after its two mountains, Mount Semeru   (the highest in Java at 3,676m), Mount Bromo (the most popular) and the   Tengger people who inhabit the area.

Mount Semeru also known as Mahameru (“Great Mountain”), is one of   Indonesia’s most active volcanoes. What stands out most about this   mountain is the fact that it erupts periodically (and very reliably).   Every 20min or so, the volcano belches out a huge cloud of steam and   smoke, sometimes interspersed with ash and stones. Climbing Mount  Semeru  requires some planning and a permit from the national park  authority.  The mountain is often closed due to its highly active  nature.

Mount Bromo (2,329m) is easily recognized as the entire top has been   blown off and the crater inside constantly belches white sulfurous   smoke. It sits inside the massive Tengger caldera. with a diameter of   approximately 10km, surrounded by the Laut Pasir (Sea of Sand) of fine   volcanic sand. The overall effect is unsettlingly unearthly, especially   when compared to the lush green valleys all around the caldera.

The major access point is Cemoro Lawang (also Cemara Lawang or Cemora   Lawang – blame the East Javanese accent!) at the northeastern edge of   the caldera, but there are also trails from Tosari (northwest) and   Ngadas (southwest). The village of Ngadisari, on the road from   Probolinggo about 5.5km before Cemoro Lawang, marks the entrance to the   national park. Both Cemoro Lawang and Ngadisari are rather  picturesque,  with brightly-painted houses and flower beds outside.

We only need about 1 hour from Mount Bromo to arrive at the Madakaripura Waterfall parking area. From here, we still need about 10-15 minutes to arrive at the ticket post. You can walk or take Ojek. Ojek is a motorbike taxi. After arriving at the ticket post, you can buy an entry ticket here. With a local guide, it will take you about 1 hour to arrive at the location of the Madakaripura Waterfall
