The 5 Best Brisbane River Cruise Tours [2024 Reviews]

It’s no secret that Australia is bursting at the seams with adventure and excitement, but there are plenty of serene opportunities that lie within its natural landscapes.

If you’re in Brisbane and want an excursion that will take you away from the hustle and bustle of the city center, offering lush riverside scenery and amazing skyline views, you’re in for a real treat.

Going on a Brisbane river cruise is one of the best activities you can partake in, and it’s great for people of any age or background! I’ve carefully curated this guide with the 5 top Brisbane river cruises available that are well worth your time and money. Let’s get started!

Best Brisbane River Cruises

Quick answer: the 5 best rated brisbane river cruise tours for 2024.

  • Brisbane River Cruise with Entry to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
  • 90min Brisbane River Cruise/Tour
  • Sunset River Cruise
  • Brisbane River Cruise
  • City Lights Dinner Cruise in Brisbane with Dinner

Brisbane River Cruise Tour Reviews

1. brisbane river cruise with entry to lone pine koala sanctuary.

  • Duration: 5.5 hours
  • Departure: Cultural Centre Boardwalk, South Brisbane QLD 4101
  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM
  • Includes:  Round-trip cruise, general admission into Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

There’s no way you can explore Brisbane without taking advantage of the amazing flora and fauna that awaits. With the Brisbane River Cruise with Entry to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary , it combines both seamlessly, offering a fun and educational adventure.

I know it sounds a bit cliche, but I’ve always wanted to see koalas in real life, and was so excited that I was able to on this tour!

We started out by meeting with our guide at the Cultural Centre Boardwalk in the morning, where he greeted us and offered us a briefing of what to expect for the morning and afternoon.

We then boarded our vessel, which was a clean and comfortable boat that offered plenty of food and drinks for purchase (the pastries in particular are a must-try).

The cruise was quite leisurely and relaxing, offering amazing views of the city skyline and iconic landmarks like the Story Bridge and South Park Parklands.

As we cruised along, our guide did a fantastic job at offering interesting commentary, including historical and cultural knowledge, as well as some funny anecdotes.

Expand To See More See Less

After about an hour on the boat, we arrived at the Lone Pine Koala Sancturary, which is nearly 100 years old! We learned that it’s used today as a refuge for ill, injured, and orphaned koalas who cannot support themselves in the wild.

Back when it opened in 1927, it was a time where koalas were in grave danger of being culled for the fur trade, but it’s still very important to have around today.

The sanctuary itself is quite beautiful, as a haven of natural beauty, with plenty of shade provided by the eucalyptus trees, where these furry little guys laze in the branches above.

It was a fantastic opportunity to learn about the importance ofkeeping them safe with a wide range of exhibits, learning not only about the cute marsupials, but the local birds of prey, too.

  • Duration: 1.5 hours
  • Departure Time: 10:30 AM, 12:30 & 2:30 PM
  • Includes:  1.5-hour Sight Seeing Cruise, Live commentary, Morning Tea (10:30am cruise), Souvenir Map of Brisbane City

If you already have a packed itinerary and are looking for the opportunity to add in something a bit more relaxing in Mother Nature, this next tour should be up for consideration.

90min Brisbane River Cruise/Tour  is a fantastic way to get a lay of the land (and water?) in a way that allows you to experience the allure of Brisbane in a rather compact journey.

With great customer service and excellent organization, it’s one of my top recommendations if you’ve just arrived in the city and want to see and learn a lot, quickly.

With many different start times available throughout the morning and afternoon, it’s that much easier to fit into a busy schedule. Arrive at the boardwalk at least 10 minutes before your cruise time, stepping aboard the sleek vessels to be greeted by the friendly staff.

I’d be willing to say that the staff won’t above and beyond to make us feel welcome, ensuring a fantastic experience for everyone.

As soon as we all got settled in, they provided us with some delicious scones to accompany our morning tea to enjoy as we soaked in the beautiful views on the river.

The captain was very funny and did a great job at making everything interesting, regaling us with anecdotes and historical background on each site.

Taking the tour for me was incredibly useful in getting to know Brisbane fast, and I made sure to explore certain places further after them catching my interest while on the river.

Southbank beaches and lagoons, Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park, bridges, etc. were all interesting to see from this perspective, and made me realize just how interesting Brisbane really is. If you’re looking for a nice, relaxing cruise that isn’t crowded or noisy, definitely consider this one.

It’s a wonderful way to start out any morning in this lovely city, and even more so with such wonderful hosts.

3. Brisbane Sunset River Cruise

  • Departure Time: 6:00 PM
  • Includes:  In-person guide, restroom on board

As the sun starts to set, Brisbane becomes a city of shimmering lights with a charming glow and vibe to it. There’s no better way to experience an evening in Brisbane than with the Sunset River Cruise tour .

If you’re looking for a romantic evening activity that doesn’t involve going to a restaurant or don’t want to deal with a fully-guided tour, this is just the ticket.

However, don’t think that it’s just ideal for couples – it’s also perfect for solo travelers, as well as friend groups or entire families. I found it was a great way to meet fellow travelers, as it kind of had a lighthearted, nighttime experience.

If you have an evening free and would also like to learn a bit more about the history and cultural background of Brisbane, this is it.

As we relaxed and cruised along the tranquil waters, I watched as the lights reflected off the river and sipped on some delicious beer while listening to the captain.

Seeing Story Bridge and Kangaroo Point’s cliffs looked so different at night, taking on a new kind of charm under the allure of darkness. The food was also quite tasty, serving as a nice precursor to going out to eat at a restaurant, if that’s on your itinerary.

The canapes and snacks were nice and varied, from salty/savory delights to sweet treats, there’s something for everyone.

With plenty of comfortable seating, restaurants onboard, and other amenities, it’s also a quite nice place to spend some time. Oh, and then take into consideration the ultra-inexpensive price, and you seriously can’t go wrong here.

4. Brisbane River Cruise 12.30pm

  • Duration:  1.5 hours
  • Departure Time: 12:30 PM
  • Includes:  1.5-hour sightseeing cruise, live commentary, souvenir map of Brisbane city, access to the onboard coffee shop/licensed bar

Are you someone who doesn’t want to get up early in the morning to head out to a tour, or perhaps want to break up a busy day with a bit of relaxation and comfort?

If that sounds like you at all, go ahead and check out the Brisbane River Cruise 12.30pm experience . Instead of going out to lunch, this tour is a great alternative to have some tasty food, refreshing drinks, and a pretty tour in the sunshine.

I really find this tour to be ideal for anyone of any age, activity level, background, etcetera., as it’s a very welcoming experience.

You’ll set off on a journey along the winding waters of the river, which is one of the coolest activities to partake in during the summertime. You’ll get to kick back, let the stress melt away, and appreciate the beauty of Brisbane’s stunning skyline with great company.

We started out from the South Bank, all the way through the city under the Story Bridge, until Breakfast Creek – I got to know the city quite well!

Something I will mention, is that if you’re interested in unique suburban architecture, this is the cruise for you. I took some incredible photos and videos as we cruised along, and as there weren’t too many people on board, didn’t have to worry about my view getting interrupted.

The entertaining live commentary only enriched the experience further, and I purchased a coffee and snack from their onboard bar/cafe to enjoy as I listened.

They thoughtfully provided us with a complimentary gift of a Brisbane city map, as well as some discounts for other activities throughout the city. Overall, it was another really affordable, fun activity that I highly recommend.

5. City Lights Dinner Cruise in Brisbane with Dinner

  • Includes:  Dinner, restroom on board, snacks

This is truly one of the most magical tours I’ve been on in Brisbane, and if you’re looking to indulge in an evening of tasty food and drink, check this one out.

With amazing stunning views of the glowing water, the City Lights Dinner Cruise in Brisbane with Dinner  is one to impress. Instead of going to dinner at a nice restaurant, try this sophisticated, relaxing experience that you’re sure to want to repeat.

Starting out at 6pm, you’ll head to the boardwalk to meet the captain and crew, where you’ll be escorted onboard the clean and upscale vessel. The staff on this boat is undoubtedly one of the best of any I’ve encountered, answering any questions we had with a sense of expertise.

The seating was nice and comfortable, with each table offering a great view of the river, city skyline, and other interesting sites.

It was surprising that this tour was only 1.5 hours, as I simply learned so much about Brisbane’s history and culture, and experienced so many different stories and forms of entertainment.

I enjoyed the included snacks and drinks while listening to music, with undoubtedly one of the most impressive Australian city backgrounds. The luxurious buffet dinner followed up the snacks, which was very substantial and the quality of a nice dinner.

I also appreciated the full bar on our boat, which made the tour even more cost effective – perfect for those who are on a tight budget but want to really learn about Brisbane. Using locally-sourced ingredients, everything tasted very fresh, and I felt represented the local foodie scene quite well.

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion, or simply looking to make a memorable night out, this is the tour for you!

Best Brisbane River Cruise Experiences

Looking for a unique way to discover Brisbane? Searching for fun things to do in Brisbane that you can share with family or friends? A Brisbane cruise is just the ticket. Set sail and explore some of the city’s top sights, all while you meander along the Brisbane River. With various cruises to choose from, from simple scenic cruises to river cruises, you’ll find plenty of ways to discover Brisbane with RedBalloon.

What can I expect on a Brisbane River cruise?

With plenty of great packages to choose from, each Brisbane River cruise offers its own unique experiences. Enjoy an afternoon out on the water with a scenic Brisbane River cruise, discovering some of the city’s top sights, or set the mood for a romantic date with a night out on the water. Brisbane is a beautiful city at any time of the day, so embrace the opportunity to discover what makes it such a memorable destination. You might choose to go on a cruise that includes morning tea, dinner or a drink or two, or you may opt for a cruise that takes you between several of Brisbane’s must-see spots. Whichever cruise you decide to go on, you will have a fantastic time.

How much does a Brisbane River cruise cost?

As with any activity or experience, the cost of a Brisbane River cruise will vary depending on what’s included and its duration. Brisbane dinner cruises and those offering unique experiences such as riverfront bar hopping will typically cost more than standard sightseeing outings. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly river cruise, you can secure tickets for a 90-minute cruise for around $49 per adult, while cruises with meal inclusions are generally more expensive.

Using the Price Range filter allows you to discover an assortment of experiences to suit your budget.

Where do Brisbane River cruises leave from?

The location from which your Brisbane River cruise will depart will vary depending on the operator. Some cruises may leave from the Cultural Centre Public Pontoon in South Bank, while others will depart from other locations along the river. When you book your river cruise, you’ll be provided with all the information you’ll need to plan your day or evening on the water, including your departure time and location.

What should I wear on a Brisbane dining cruise?

While it’s generally acceptable to wear casual clothing, such as activewear or beachwear, when enjoying a daytime sightseeing cruise around the city and its surrounds, if you plan to set out on a Brisbane dinner cruise, you might choose to don a smart casual outfit. While definitions of smart casual vary, an outfit would generally consist of dress jeans or long pants and a collared shirt for men. For women, look to wear an outfit that would be suited to dinner at a nice restaurant. Contact your cruise operator for more information if you’re unsure what is appropriate for your Brisbane dinner cruise.

If you’ve ever spent time on the water after dark, you’d know that the temperature can drop quite quickly once the sun has set. Although this may not be an issue on a Brisbane cruise at the height of summer, consider taking a jacket or coat if you plan to enjoy a cruise during the cooler months.

Cruises offer a fantastic opportunity to discover the beauty of Australia’s waterways from a brand-new perspective. If you’re ready to see more of our beautiful country from the comfort of a scenic or dining cruise , explore the fantastic range of experiences available at RedBalloon. Enjoy an outing with friends and family, or treat a special someone to a date with a difference.

More Details on P&O Australia Wind Down, Pacific Explorer Exit

  • June 7, 2024

Pacific Explorer

After announcing plans to be absorbed by Carnival Cruise Line , P&O Cruises Australia has confirmed that all Pacific Explorer operations will be discontinued in early 2025.

According to a statement published on the company’s website, all cruises previously scheduled to depart after March 2, 2025, are now canceled.

Affected passengers are being contacted by guest services and will receive full refunds, according to P&O Australia.

The Pacific Explorer was scheduled to offer a series of two- to 14-night cruises departing from various ports in Australia and New Zealand, including Adelaide, Fremantle, Brisbane, Melbourne and Auckland.

Itineraries included destinations in different parts of the South Pacific, such as the Australian Coast, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Tasmania, Fiji and Vanuatu.

“We are all immensely proud of P&O Cruises Australia’s 90-year heritage of dedicated operations in the region, and Carnival Cruise Line is honored to carry forward its storied legacy and continue to deliver the same onboard experiences and itineraries,” the company added.

The Pacific Encounter and the Pacific Adventure will continue to sail from Australia on a year-round basis after transferring to Carnival Cruise Line.

According to P&O Australia, while maintaining most of the current onboard experiences, the ships will offer new benefits including the Carnival HUB App and the VIFP loyalty program.

With the cancellations, the Pacific Explorer is scheduled to embark on its final cruise on February 7, 2025. The one-way itinerary starts from Fremantle and ends in Singapore eleven days later.

After completing its sailing career for P&O Cruises Australia, the 1997-built vessel is expected to leave Carnival Corporation’s fleet.

As part of a series of four ships that began with the 1995-built Sun Princess, the 1,998-guest vessel has been offering cruises for the Australian brand since early 2017 .

All three of its sister ships, the former Sea Princess, the former Sun Princess, and the former Oceana , were sold by Carnival Corporation in 2020.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

Brisbane sheds its sleepy image with surging house values — now only second to Sydney

Analysis Brisbane sheds its sleepy image with surging house values — now only second to Sydney

aerial rooftops in inner suburbs

So, you still think of Brisbane as the sprawling, steamy, sleepy backwater in Australia's deep north? The place you can cash in your family home in Sydney or Melbourne and buy one of those cute little wooden workers' cottages on stilts with big verandahs and still have plenty of cash left over?

Let me disabuse you of that.

In the property market in Brisbane, it's hand-to-hand combat, folks.

There's such a shortage of houses and units that anyone with the means to buy – locals, along with the 116,260 new arrivals from overseas and interstate last year – is camping out in crappy rentals across the city, doom scrolling on real estate sites trying to find a home for a reasonable price.

That was us last year.

In December 2022, after 25 years in Sydney, my husband and two grown sons made the move home to Brissie.

We spent 18 months living in an orange brick house in suburbia. Built in 1950, it had all the street appeal of a council toilet block. Black mould clung to the eaves and the garden was alive with weeds.

A couple of times a week I'd hear a distinctive "plop" from the backyard pool, as another of the mission brown edging tiles collapsed, exhausted and dispirited, into the cracked shell.

The original terrazzo bathroom, complete with pink toilet, basin and bath, was drafty and barely functional. The shower floor would fill up with water, as the old metal drains under the slab had rusted away and collapsed.

And then there was the kitchen. The benches in the tiny galley space were a museum piece — clad in formica, edged in steel strips — and so low they were a daily reminder of how good nutrition has produced a substantially taller generation of Australians since the war.

In January 2019, precisely a year before the pandemic, the elderly couple who'd owned it — Helen and Bill — sold the place for $1.725 million. The locals considered that an astonishing price. Without so much as a light once-over with a Bunnings gurney, the place sold just before Christmas for $3.1 million.

Little wonder Brisbane property prices have overtaken Melbourne to run second highest in the nation behind Sydney.

"It's crazy," says buyer's agent Jamie Charman, the former Brisbane Lions footy player turned real estate guru, who we engaged last year in a desperate effort to find an affordable home.

"Supply is really low," he said. "There's a lot of buyers out there."

Jamie's agency buys about 80 properties a year, mainly off market, but said it was harder and harder to find willing sellers.

"People nowadays want to make $500,000 on their property in a couple of years. And they are!" he said.

"A few years ago, if you made half a million dollars, that was enormous [profit]. Now, if you're not making $500,000 on your investment in two years, [you think] it's not worth selling."

And it's not just house prices.

"In terms of apartments, I've never seen the market so strong," Charman said.

"I was speaking to a really good developer here in Brisbane about off the plan units. He said there were 1,000 new inner-city units built last year. This year it's 750 new units. And it will be even less next year."

As a result, he said, desperate buyers, including those downsizing from the family home, were bidding up the price of existing unit stock.

Tim Lawless, head of research at CoreLogic Asia Pacific, who crunched the data showing Brisbane's meteoric rise in property values, calculated it's the equivalent of the median dwelling value rising by more than $12,000 every month.

"The time on market [until a property sells] is about 19 days," Mr Lawless said.

Previously, it was rare to get a sale in less than 20.

"Homes are selling very quickly," he added.

The question is not so much why, as why now?

For over 10 years, Brisbane has been the fastest-growing major Australian capital city, increasing its population by 21 per cent — yet, over the decade between the global financial crisis and 2019, prices were relatively flat.

What's changed is the economy. Brisbane is booming. By the time Brisbane has hosted the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the city will be well on its way to supersizing its economy.

The economy is predicted to grow to $275 billion by 2041, adding two-thirds to annual output, according to the inaugural State of the City report from the Brisbane Economic Development Agency (BEDA) and Deloitte Access Economics.

That export growth is set to boom, increasing by 41 per cent over the current decade, which is hardly a surprise — the city is not only the closest major port to the world's largest Asian markets, but Brisbane is increasingly an Asian city; two thirds of skilled migrants here were born in the Asia Pacific region.

Where do professional service graduates go for their first job? The newly minted lawyers, advertising professionals, architects, accountants, financial advisers, engineers, and consultants? Most still go to Sydney (23 per cent), but more make a home in Brisbane (18 per cent) these days than in Melbourne (16 per cent). Logistics and transport is huge in south-east Queensland.

The superlatives roll on: Home to the largest health clusters in the southern hemisphere. Named by the World Economic Forum as a global Advanced Manufacturing Hub.

And the building boom is something to behold: $25 billion worth of infrastructure projects in the pipeline, including a network of rapid transport busways across the city.

A second Brisbane River rail crossing and new pedestrian bridges crisscrossing the river are also planned, connecting previously distant suburban pockets on either side of the 'Brown Snake' that coils through the city.

In August, the $3.6 billion Queen's Wharf development will open — 35 metres above street level — eventually bringing more than 50 new bars and restaurants to the inner city.

"The potential here is off the charts," said Heidi Cooper, chief executive of Business Chamber Queensland, citing the Olympics and the energy transition as major drivers of economic growth.

"But housing is an issue.

"Attracting and retaining workforce is the number one challenge for our members. You can't employ people if they have nowhere to live.

"It's no longer a social and commercial problem for the city. It's becoming an economic barrier for the state."

But it's not a problem likely to be solved anytime soon.

While Tim Lawless maintained that eventually price growth in Brisbane would slow and the nation would return to the normal hierarchy in which Sydney and Melbourne property prices top all other cities, Jamie Charman isn't so sure.

"I think there are still too many buyers in the market for it to settle down, especially in the unit market where it's a bit more affordable. I don't think it's going to settle down for the next three years," he said.
