The 30 Best California Breweries to Visit

* This article contains affiliate links, which help run this site at no extra cost to you.

TL;DR: The best California breweries are Ballast Point Brewing Company (San Diego), Brew Crew Inc (Riverside), and Thirsty Bear Brewing Co. (San Francisco). Here are the key takeaways from my review of California breweries:

  • Ballast Point BRewing Company is one of our favorite breweries in San Diego and home to my favorite beer, the Sculpin IPA. They offer over 50 beers on tap, an extensive food menu, and indoor and outdoor seating with views of the brewing equipment.
  • Brew Crew Inc in Riverside is a collaboration between 3 local breweries, making it a personal experience that we love. They offer over 24 craft beers on tap, a full kitchen serving bar food, and indoor seating as well as a dog-friendly patio that overlooks the brewhouse.
  • Thirsty Bear Brewing Co. in San Francisco is my favorite brewery for family get-togethers, offering a selection of 10 handcrafted beers, prominently known for their award-winning Valencia Wheat Beer. They have a full-service restaurant with Spanish-inspired cuisine, a spacious interior, an inviting outdoor beer garden, and occasionally offer brewery tours as well.

With 570 California breweries up and down the state, the Golden State has more craft breweries than any other state in the USA.

Born and raised in California , it is also the place where I had my first experience with craft beer – Arrogant Bastard from Stone Brewery to be exact.

California is known for its craft beer culture, specifically in San Diego and San Francisco, but there are so many other breweries within the state that are worth a stop.

The 30 Best Breweries in California | The Atlas Heart

After going to a sour tap takeover of Cantillon beer in Portland a few days ago, I was inspired to recreate the beer journey I recently went on from San Diego to Eureka.

I also made sure to add on my other favorites that I didn’t get to stop in at the last time around.

For the following breweries, I’ve either been to them personally, tried their bottled beers before, or have heard so many recommendations about them from friends in the craft beer industry that I couldn’t leave them off the list.

Table of Contents

Stone Brewing Co. – San Diego

The brewery that started it all for me, and where I had my first taste of good California craft beer.

A kick to your taste buds – in a good way – Stone Brewing is all about the hops, high alcohol, and strong beers.

The brewery covers an expansive complex that includes a rock garden and a few different areas to sip your beer in a relaxing setting.

You can take free brewery tours here, but it’s a first-come-first-serve basis so put your name on the list as soon as you get there.

Be prepared for a fairly expensive food menu, the beer mac & cheese is the best! Also, this is one of the most popular north county breweries in San Diego so it’s often busy.

Signature beer : Arrogant Bastard Ale, 7.2%

Where to find : 1999 Citracado Parkway.

Recommended Experience: Tijuana Taco and Craft Beer Tour from San Diego

Ballast Point Brewing Company – San Diego

One of my favorite breweries and where I found my all-time favorite beer (Sculpin IPA!), Ballast Point is a quality brewery that has made a name for itself in the San Diego craft beer scene.

It’s easily considered one of the best breweries in Southern California.

There are two locations for Ballast Point in San Diego – the original location in Miramar, and the newer one located in downtown Little Italy.

There’s outdoor seating at the Little Italy location and a varied tap list, depending on the season.

Ballast Point is always keeping it fresh with uncommon beer styles and combinations, such as the Habanero Sculpin IPA, that keeps the homebrew vibe alive and well in a successful large-scale brewery.

Half Door Brewing Co. – San Diego

The new kid on the block in San Diego, Half Door Brewing is located right near Petco Park and provides a refreshing Irish countryside spin to the West Coast-focused southern California breweries around town.

At Half Door, you’ll find traditional Irish beer styles, such as an Irish Red and, my personal favorite, the Irish Dry Stout on Nitro.

They also brew a delicious Berlinerweisse that’s worth a taste if you enjoy sour beers.

This is one of the smaller breweries you’ll find in downtown San Diego, and therefore comes off as personal and intimate.

Signature beer : Colmans Stout (Nitro), 4.8%

Where to find : 903 Island Ave.

Karl Strauss Brewing Company – San Diego

You can find Karl Strauss pretty much everywhere in San Diego.

The original brewery is over on Santa Fe Street, but they have brewery restaurants in almost every suburb.

Karl Strauss is seen as a more commercial brewery in San Diego, and perhaps a tad less original when it comes to unique beer styles.

However, don’t let that fool you into thinking they don’t make quality beer, because they do.

Signature beer = Red Trolley Ale, 5.8%

Where to find : 5985 Santa Fe St. (but you can find their brewery restaurants all over San Diego)

Mission Brewery – San Diego

Mission Brewery has won so many beer awards they must be losing room on their shelf of trophies.

With a very laid-back Southern California atmosphere, Mission is located in a brick warehouse that’s open and airy.

It’s the perfect place for an afternoon beer.

The roots of this brewery go way back, they were even around during the hard times of Prohibition.

It wasn’t until 2007, when the avid home brewer, Dan Selis, reestablished the brand and set-up the tasting room in San Diego.

Now it’s one of the best breweries in Southern California.

Green Flash Brewing Company – San Diego

Green Flash is the poster child for the West Coast IPA style and known for the constant high quality of beer they brew.

Located in an industrial business park, which is not unusual for Southern California breweries, Green Flash has a beer garden and food trucks to create a communal feel in a large brewing complex.

Also, I’ve heard the brewery tours are great here, giving you good insight into the life of brewing.

Tours are $5 for a 1 hour experience behind the scenes and the chance to have a guided tasting of 4 beers.

Signature beer = West Coast IPA, 8.1%

Where to find : 6550 Mira Mesa Blvd.

Pizza Port Brewing Company – San Diego

Pizza Port is another brewery that has multiple locations around San Diego, but the Solana Beach location has to be my favorite of the north county breweries (besides maybe Stone).

I have fond memories of grabbing pizza & beer here before heading off to LA from the train station across the street.

It’s just steps from beautiful Solana Beach and I’ve always had great service at this location.

Pizza Port is a local favorite that has a homebrew feel to their beers and a very unique pizza line-up.

This is some of the best pizza you’ll find in San Diego, and the people who work here all look like chilled out surfers, fitting the San Diego personification quite well.

Signature beer = Ponto Pale Ale, 5.4%

Where to find : 135 N. Highway 101, Solana Beach.

Wicks Brewing Co. – Riverside

Located in a business park, Wicks Brewing is just another California brewery that I was pleasantly surprised with in Riverside, a city I had never associated with craft beer before.

Wicks has a clean brewing operation set-up, and they offer the unique feature of hosting brew classes for those who want to learn the art of how to make beer.

Wicks Brewing - Riverside, California - Micro breweries in California

Signature beer = Bard’s Song Brown Ale, 5.9%

Where to find : 11620 Sterling Avenue Suite C.

Brew Crew Inc – Riverside

My favorite brewery in Riverside, Brew Crew Inc is the first collaboration brewery I’ve been to.

There are three different small breweries that share the space, collaborating and taking turns with brew days.

It’s a locally run place and personal in how you can meet the brewers and watch them work on small batches for the day.

The 3 different California breweries you’ll find here are Polymath, Delicious Science, and Fermatrix homebrewing.

We found so many interesting experimental beers here that were not only creative but incredibly delicious.

Brew Crew Inc - Riverside, California - beer tasting California

Signature beer = Sir Charms Breakfast Stout, 7.5%

Where to find : 11626 Sterling Ave Suite G.

Eagle Rock Brewery – Los Angeles

Located in a converted warehouse in Los Angeles , Eagle Rock Brewery hosts a laid-back tasting room with beer styles that range from sessionable to imperial.

Going from the minimalist design of the place and menu choices, this brewery is all about the beer.

Grab lunch/dinner beforehand and just enjoy tasting good beer and chatting to people who are knowledgeable about the product.

Recommended Experience: Los Angeles Brewery Yoga

Signature beer = Populist IPA, 7.0%

Where to find : 3056 Roswell St.

Monkish Brewing Co. – Los Angeles

A hard-to-find brewery with a small tasting room, Monkish Brewing Co. is worth the hassle to get to.

It’s a Belgian-inspired brewery that excels at its specialty.

Combine that with 80s music, free snacks, and friendly staff, and this is not a brewery to be missed if you’re in the LA area .

Recommended Experience: East and Central Los Angeles Beer Hop

Signature beer = Crux Belgian Ale, 5.6%

Where to find : 20311 S. Western Ave.

Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. – Santa Barbara

Figueroa Mountain’s original brewery is located in Buellton, but why not make an excuse to stop in the stunning seaside town of Santa Barbara if you have the chance?!

After being less than impressed with Santa Barbara Brewing Company, the only other brewery in town, Figueroa was the perfect stop to start off a day exploring town.

One of my favorite aspects was the colorful placards that came with each beer on a tasting tray, describing the beer, giving the percentage, and any pairings it would be good with.

I love that amount of information when I’m trying a lot of different beers.

They don’t have any of their own food, but the Italian place next door makes delicious pizzas that you can have ordered over and delivered to the bar.

Recommended Experience: Saturday Urban Santa Barbara Beer Tour

Figueroa Mountain Brewing - Santa Barbara, California - Breweries in California

Firestone Walker Brewing Company – Paso Robles

Although Paso Robles may be a little out of your way if you’re sticking to Hwy 1 up the coast, Firestone Walker produces some of the best beers and is known as one the best breweries to visit in California.

The brewery offers free tours by appointment, and there is a restaurant set up with everything from steaks to pizza.

They’re especially known for their unique barrel-aged beers and punchy IPAs.

Some of their more exotic beers aren’t available as bottles in local stores, so it’s worth a stop in at the brewery to experience.

Recommended Experience: Hearst Castle Tour from Paso Robles

Signature beer = Double Jack IPA, 9.5%

Where to find : 1400 Ramada Dr.

Seabright Brewery – Santa Cruz

Put on the list partly for nostalgia, Seabright Brewery is a beachside restaurant that I used to always go to with the family, growing up in Santa Cruz.

You won’t find any crazy styles or particularly phenomenal beer, but it’s one of the original breweries in Santa Cruz and definitely a local’s place.

Their food, especially their seafood dishes, are mouthwatering and deliciously fresh. The location, within walking distance to the beach, is unbeatable.

Time it right, and go watch the sunset at Seabright Beach after dinner at the brewery for the ultimate Santa Cruz experience.

Signature beer = Seabright Amber Ale, 5.0%

Where to find : 519 Seabright Ave.

Uncommon Brewers – Santa Cruz

A new brewery that has popped up in the recent brew scene in Santa Cruz, Uncommon Brewers is all about wacky and out there styles that taste good, such as their Bacon Brown Ale.

You can tell that the owner and brewmaster, Alec, is passionate about the product he’s creating.

The brewery is still a small set-up with visits to the tasting room by appointment only.

They’re known for their green practices in only making organic beer and exclusively using recyclable one-way keg technology.

Signature beer = Bacon Brown Ale, 6.8%

Where to find : 303 Potrero St. Ste. 40-H.

Discretion Brewing – Santa Cruz

Combine a fun funky atmosphere with delicious brews and food, and you have a classic Santa Cruz brewery restaurant.

Another place for the locals, Discretion is a neighborhood hang out that has a small beer garden with styles from Belgians to Irish stouts, especially highlighting European-type beers.

Recommended Experience: Ride a Steam Train through the Santa Cruz Redwoods

Signature beer = Uncle Dave’s Rye IPA, 7.0%

Where to find : 2703 41st Ave, Soquel

21st Amendment Brewery – San Francisco

I first fell in love with the quirky 21st Amendment when I tried their Hell or High Watermelon Wheat beer on a hot summer day.

I was hooked.

This multi-level brewery is the place to go in San Francisco before a Giants game as it’s right next to the AT&T Ballpark.

Their finger foods and appetizers are some of the best for savory goodness (cheese curds!).

Signature beer = Hell or High Watermelon Wheat, 4.9%

Where to find : (1) 563 2nd St (2) 2010 Williams St, San Leandro.

Thirsty Bear Brewing Co. – San Francisco

Perhaps  the  most popular brewery to visit in San Francisco, besides Anchor Brewing, Thirsty Bear takes over a huge amount of real estate to create an airy beer hall vibe with the feeling of camaraderie.

This place is two stories and usually has events of some sort going on.

Don’t let the size intimidate you, there is usually plenty of seating and a lot of good times to be had at Thirsty Bear.

It’s a great place to come for happy hour, especially for big groups.

Recommended Experience: Half Day Craft Brews and Bike Tour in San Francisco

Thirsty Bear Brewing - San Francisco, California - California breweries

Signature beer = Howard Street IPA,  7.0%

Where to find : 661 Howard St.

Anchor Brewing – San Francisco

The granddaddy of craft beer in the Bay Area and the country for that matter, Anchor Brewing was America’s first craft brewery.

They’re known for their famous Anchor Steam beer that you can find in almost every bar in the city.

It’s important to note that the taproom isn’t open to the general public and they only offer two guided tours every weekday.

Tours of the brewery are free but you sometimes have to book them months in advance because they’re so popular.

The tours are highly informative, not only about the great range of beers produced at Anchor but about the rich history behind the brewery as well.

This is a landmark brewery to visit in California for its history, and one of the top California breweries not to miss.

Signature beer = Anchor Steam Beer, 4.9%

Where to find : 1705 Mariposa St.

Speakeasy Ales & Lagers – San Francisco

Speakeasy has to be another one of my favorite breweries in California, if only for their awesome beer labels and branding – but don’t worry, the beer is phenomenal as well.

Staying true to their name, they have a speakeasy-style bar in San Francisco that probably has the coolest atmosphere out of any other brewery in the city.

They’re known for their big and bold hopped-up beers, such as their Double Daddy IPA, so be prepared to rock the socks off your tastebuds.

Signature beer = Double Daddy IPA, 8.5%

Where to find : 1195 Evans Ave.

Jupiter – Berkeley

A busy and popular place on the other side of the Bay in Berkeley, Jupiter is a satisfying brewery that is known for an expansive outdoor seating ambiance, live music, and wood-fired pizzas, perhaps more than their beer.

However, they do offer up a great range of guest taps, and their own beers are not something to miss out on with everything from Nitro Stouts to Double IPAs.

Jupiter - Berkeley, California - breweries to visit in California

Signature beer = Quasar Double IPA, 8.8%

Where to find : 2181 Shattuck Ave.

Lagunitas Brewing Company – Petaluma

Right up there with Ballast Point and Track 7 as some of my favorite breweries in California, Lagunitas is a local favorite and producer of good hoppy beer.

I realized my love for the Lagunitas IPA back in college when I found out my roommate was from Petaluma.

I knew I would have to make a stop at their brewery at some point, and I finally did this year!

The brewery is almost always busy, especially on the weekends, and has a ton of outdoor seating with live music and fun events throughout the year.

It felt like a summer party when I was there, enjoying the sunshine, people roaming around and saying hi to friends, and a generally happy atmosphere about the place.

It’s by far one of the best Sonoma county breweries.

Besides the Lagunitas IPA, try the Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale and the Double Barrel Aged Hop Stoopid.

You won’t be disappointed, this is considered one of the best breweries in California for a reason!

Lagunitas Brewing - Petaluma, California - Sonoma County Breweries

Signature beer = Lagunitas IPA, 6.2%

Where to find : 1280 North McDowell Blvd.

Heretic Brewing Company  – Fairfield

If you’re heading inland toward Sacramento from the Bay Area and looking for a place to fill your growler and stop for a beer, Heretic has a great range of beers to taste test and enjoy.

At Heretic, you’ll find a welcoming atmosphere with friendly staff and food trucks.

The brewery is known for their bold hoppy beers, but their dark styles, such as the Shallow Grave Porter and the Chocolate Hazelnut Porter, are just as good.

Make sure to get a flight here to try the many different styles they offer.

Signature beer  = Heretic Evil Twin, 6.8%

Where to find : 1052 Horizon Dr.

Russian River Brewing Co. – Santa Rosa

Another one of the best breweries in California, Russian River is known for its ridiculously popular beer, Pliny the Elder, considered by many to be the best IPA in the world.

Make sure not to miss out on their Blind Pig IPA and tasty sours as well!

This is generally a really busy brewery so be prepared to wait, the pizza and beer are well worth it though.

If you’re up for a challenge, order the 19 sample beer flight to try all of their beers on tap – if you go during happy hour you get all 19 2 oz pours for $22.

Signature beer = Pliny the Elder, 8.0%

Where to find : 1812 Ferdinand Ct.

Track 7 Brewing Co. – Sacramento

Track 7 Brewing shot up to the top of my California brewery favorites after a visit to their set-up in East Sacramento.

The bartenders are friendly, knowledgeable and personal, and the beers are all extremely good AND unique.

As a hint, get the $10 sampler deal with four 3 oz samples and a free glass to take home at the end.

Located in a converted warehouse, Track 7 is also a dog-friendly brewery and has some of the tastiest food cart fare I’ve tasted.

Recommended Experience: Downtown Sacramento Historical Food Tour

Track 7 Brewing - Sacramento, California - top California breweries

Signature beer = Panic IPA, 7.0%

Where to find : 3747 W Pacific Ave.

Rubicon Brewing Company – Sacramento

Rubicon is another popular Sacramento brewery that brews some pretty interesting beers.

Located right in downtown Sacramento , I would recommend this brewery more for the atmosphere and friendly service than I would for the California craft beer.

With that said, the beer was worthy enough to make this list, so go for a tasting flight to try a mix of their traditional styles vs. their more wacky ones, such as the Grapefruit Hopsauce Double IPA.

Recommended Experience: Sacramento Beer Train

Rubicon Brewing - Sacramento, California - breweries in California

Signature beer = Monkey Knife Fight Pale Ale, 5.4%

Where to find : 2004 Capitol Ave.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Company – Chico

In 1980, Sierra Nevada was the brewery that changed the idea of the American Pale Ale, producing one that was always consistent and hop-focused.

Sierra Nevada Brewery soon became another historical part of the California craft beer scene.

The Pale Ale is the initial beer for many burgeoning beer enthusiasts, and it’s seen as the ultimate entry-level craft beer these days.

This is a larger brewery, so be prepared for an energetic and loud atmosphere in the tasting room with a lot of people.

The brewery tours come highly recommended to get a sneak peek into the pioneering craft beer history of California.

Make sure to book ahead of time because the tours fill up fast!

There are 4 different types of tours, spend a whole day going on them or just choose one or two to get a good overview of the brewery.

Signature beer = Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, 5.6%

Where to find : 1075 East 20th St.

Bear Republic Brewing Company – Healdsburg (Sonoma County)

In the middle of Sonoma Wine Country, you’ll find an unsuspecting popular spot by the name of Bear Republic, that produces some fantastic beers, especially in the realm of hopped-up styles.

This family-owned brewery creates fresh and never filtered beer, it’s generally a busy and crowded place that serves up delicious meals and pours a wide range of tasting flights for you to try.

This is another favorite of the Sonoma county breweries.

Their Racer 5 exudes West Coast IPA and is a must-try, but other ones to add to your tasters would be Hop Rod Rye and the Red Rocket Ale.

Signature beer = Racer 5 IPA, 7.5%

Where to find : 345 Healdsburg Ave.

Anderson Valley Brewing Company – Boonville

Located near the tiny little town of Boonville off Highway 253, Anderson Valley shows off that small-town country vibe from the moment you see the fake stuffed grizzly bear with antlers in the back and peruse the wooden taps.

With small-town charm, you get a personalized and friendly experience at the tasting room with a bartender who knows what he’s talking about.

Although you see their Boont Amber Ale everywhere, I was particularly impressed with their Gose-style beers.

They don’t have any food at the bar or food trucks around, so make sure to stop in at the little town deli for a homemade sandwich to bring back to the brewery if you’re hungry.

Anderson Valley Brewing Company - Boonville, California - breweries in California

Signature beer = Boont Amber Ale, 5.8%

Where to find : 17700 CA-253.

Lost Coast Brewery & Cafe – Eureka

One of the last breweries you’ll find before reaching the Oregon border, you can tell what type of place Lost Coast is by the giant fake spider that comes down on your head as soon as you open the front door – luckily, we came in from the back.

They’re laid back, part dive, part small-town local craft beer pub, they don’t take themselves too seriously but provide friendly service and decent beer.

Some of their more unique beers had fruit features, such as the Tangerine Wheat Ale and Raspberry Brown Ale.

Hi, I'm Mimi! I'm an outdoorsy Californian who has spent over 28 years immersed in the incredible natural beauty that California has to offer. My goal is to inspire others to get out and find their next adventure in California. Whether it’s escaping to an alpine lake in the Sierras, finding peace among the giant redwoods, or road tripping down the PCH, there’s always more to explore in this beautiful state.

8 thoughts on “The 30 Best California Breweries to Visit”

Bottle Logic in Anaheim, Valient in Orange and the Bruery in Placentia are two I’d put on a list to try.

It’s going to take me a while to try all of these- but I’ll definitely give it a go!

Yes! That’s what I like to hear 🙂

I can’t wait to try one of these places! Too bad my friend is sick this week & can’t drink;( I’ll see what I can do!;)

I’d definitely add 4 Sons in Huntington Beach. This is a new Orange County gem, and I may be biased since its walking distance from my house, but their tap room is one of my favourite places to grab a drink. Its still small, but they have board games and often on the weekends a food truck right outside. The only complaint I’d have is that they’re so popular, they can’t keep up with demand sometimes, although I hear they’re expanding soon!

I’ve never heard of 4 Sons, but it sounds like a great local spot. I needed some Orange County breweries to visit for next time I’m in SoCal, thanks!

Great list and so many breweries I need to visit! I’m a sour beer/wild ale fan so I would definitely add in Rare Barrel in Berkeley, Almanac in SF, Sante Adairius in Santa Cruz, and The Bruery in Placentia–those along with Anderson Valley and Green Flash, are my favorite breweries in the state. Alpine is really good too, but kind of hard to find outside of San Diego.

I love sour beers as well! I can’t believe I forgot to put on Almanac, definitely dropped the ball on that one. I love their Golden Gate Gose!! I’ll be adding those other breweries you mentioned to my list for when I’m back in California, thanks for the recommendations. 🙂

Brewery Tour & Tasting - California

We’ll guide you through the brewing process, where you can gaze into our shimmering kettles; then venture into our Hop Cooler to get your hands on our favorite ingredient; then we’ll talk about the magic that is fermentation while standing beneath our massive 25,000-gallon tanks! This adventure ends in our Brewhouse Bar where you will chose & try four of our delicious Sierra Nevada beers!

Beyond The Pale Tour - California

Ken Grossman couldn’t have known that his early fascination with taking apart household appliances would eventually lead to welding together Sierra Nevada’s first malt mill and customizing its bottling equipment. Ken’s determination to brew the kind of beer he liked to drink, and to be his own boss, led to the rise of one of America’s best-loved craft breweries — and one of the world’s most iconic beers: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale .

On this tour, we will tell the story of Ken’s youthful adventures and the evolution of craft beer ; dive into the brewing process and ingredients; explore extensively throughout the original Sierra Nevada facility; and immerse you in the rare sights of one of the nation’s top craft brewers.

We will finish the experience with a ride around the facility on the storied, but rarely seen, Time Machine Beer Bike and, of course, a tasting of our award-winning brews .

Still The One Brewery Tour - California

Sierra Nevada’s humble beginnings go back to 1979, in a warehouse over on Gilman Way in Chico, CA. It was also the same year the federal government legalized homebrewing. The nascent craft beer movement started picking up steam. And Ken Grossman, first a homebrewer and the founder of Sierra Nevada, leaned in.

After almost a decade of making it work on Gilman way, Ken doubled down and broke ground at our 20th Street facility, beginning with the East Brewhouse. This tour will take you along Ken’s 20th Street journey as he launched Sierra Nevada into the forefront of the craft beer revolution. We will explore how the original 2-acre facility evolved into our current facility that produces 2 million kegs annually! As we walk through how our brewery became a cornerstone in craft, we will share the professional and personal challenges that faced Ken as Sierra Nevada grew to be bigger than anything he could have imagined.

This journey is a half-mile walk through our brewery maze. At the end of your adventure, we will provide you with a refreshing flight so you can see what all the fuss is about and know why Sierra Nevada is still the one.

Sustainability Tour - California

Our sustainability tour covers much of the sunny brewery grounds, showcasing our alternative energy efforts and many of the initiatives based on our “reduce, reuse, recycle, rot” philosophy. You’ll check out one of California’s largest privately owned solar installations (10,500+ panels!), our micro turbine technology, and the remarkable HotRot composter. We’ll also discuss our recycling and conservation program that helps us divert 99.8% of our solid waste away from landfills. There’s not much that beats walking through our lush garden while you enjoy a 12oz offering of our popular brews

* Sustainability tour season runs April-October. Private tours available year-round. Please note that this tour requires closed-toe shoes and will take place rain or shine. Protective weather gear is recommended.

Tour Route and Areas covered are dependent on Weather & Safety concerns. Since this tour is almost entirely outside, if Severe weather conditions occur, the tour will be cancelled & you will be provided with a full refund.

Excellent experience and tour! Michael was our guide and he had a vast knowledge of Orange County and the history. We visited many places around Orange Country and got to experience "can't miss" sights. This is a great option for anyone who wants to see Orange Country and explore. I felt as if I learned and saw so much.

We took the Temecula Wine tour, starting off with lunch a Robert Rinzoni winey, before getting to the winery we drove through old town Temecula and stopped to see some long horn bulls and water buffalo. The Best Coast Tours team made us feel comfortable and showed us a great time. I have been going to Temecula for years, and this was a fun, new side of the area I hadn't seen.

Tour was 9-6; Saw everything you could wish to see - Beverly Hills, Hollywood sign, Farmers Market, Rodeo Drive etc. The driver was knowledgable. It was a great value. We never would have been able to see so much, navigate the highways and directions. It was an excellent experience.

Joe was very knowledgeable and even personalized the tour a little. We had a smashing day visiting Laguna Beach, Crystal Cove, Marina Del Rey and others all of which enhanced our holiday no end. On the way back, Joe was flexible enough to take us to a lovely spot to spend the evening at Newport Beach rather than a return to our hotel.

We toured both LA and Orange County beaches with Best Coast Tours last week. Joe and Michael are outstanding hosts providing historical information regarding the sites along with just the right mix of pop culture. Not only are the extremely knowledgeable about the area, they are fun! We are so glad to have picked Best Coast Tours to introduce us to California.

Can we bring our own drinks as well for the drive?

There is normally plenty of tasting involved at the breweries. With our Public Tours we do not allow drinking on the vehicle, and with the Private Tours we do allow beer but no hard liquor.

How many beers do you get to sample at the locations?

There were about three to four 4oz tasters at each location.

My group of friends and I took the private tour on Saturday night, we were 11 ppl. Dalina was our guide. We had a blast!! It was perfectly executed from the pick up to drop off. Very nice bus, limo style so you can sit and chat and we got to play whatever music we wanted. Dalina was amazing and served us all of our tastings and waters (nice touch) and all the food at the last brewery. We were really well taken care of, could just sit back and relax and everyone loved it. I would highly recommend booking this company for a memorable private tour while in San Diego!

Dalina is the best host ever. She took care of lunch and beers for the whole day. This is the best beer tour in San Diego.

They look amazing, but their website publicizes public tours - which they are no longer providing.

What an awesome day... Visiting and with Covid times, we needed a service that can take us safely to our venues plus navigate San Diego's many breweries. Due to Covid guidelines in order to have alcohol... you need to order food. So start your tour hungry! *pickup/drop off service to your hotel *3 breweries of your choice. We went with Ballast, Eppig and Pizza point. FYI Eppig is great for photos... *knowledgeable driver/staff about the breweries. *and Jon, so helpful in planning our tour. So quick to respond to our questions. We would definitely do this again and with over 150 breweries in the area... it can never get old. Shout out to Austin... thanks for the awesome tour!

We did a tour with Adam and it was great! He was very informative, fun and made great recommendations for beers. Highly recommended!

We had a great time on our tour! We had a private group of 11 people and had more than enough space on the bus. Our driver was knowledgeable & made everything so easy when we got to both breweries. She gave us little tours, set us up at a table and then brought every round of beer to us. We booked the option with two stops and enjoyed both (Mission and Mike Hess). There was so much beer. Throughout the booking process, Jon was one of the easiest people I've ever worked with. He's extremely responsive via email and I never had to wait more than a few minutes to hear back from him. We hope to be able to take another tour again in the future!

Each of the tours include transportation, a meal at one of the stops, all your tastings and a fun souvenir glass! Your driver is also your guide so they can teach you about the beer making process, give you suggestion of some great brews to try and they'll ensure you have a fun time with a designated driver! We went on the Saturday morning champion tour and it was amazing! We loved the swag at Ballast Point, the food at Karl Strauss but our fav was Coronado Brewing with a great location and amazing beers! I've been to countless wineries and brewery tours and I have to say this is by far one of the best tours I've ever done! Our tour guide, Adam was LEGIT! He's worked at just about every brewery in San Diego and is an absolute expert. He knows the beers, the process and can answer any question you throw at him. Also I'm positive he knows just about everyone who works in all the stops we visited. We headed to Ballast Point, Stone & Green Flash. Each place, we had about 3-5 4oz tastings. I honestly lost count. All were great and a different vibe. Ballast was out in Scripps Ranch and will be closing that location for a larger one. They have a huge deck to enjoy your beers which were all tasty. My fave was the California Kolsch! At our second stop, Adam mentioned this place was almost like Jurassic Park. I think once you visit, you can see why. Huge stones everywhere (haha get it.. Stone), jungle vibes, huge restaurant with floor to ceiling windows. A great space out back. Perfect for date night! AWESOME BEER! I completely forgot what we drank but each one I had was awesome here. Last was Green Flash with some food at the end from an awesome taco truck. This was definitely the vibe I expected a brewery to have: food truck in front, patio area for outside seating, inside seating, games like giant Jenga and cornhole, and a photobooth! Great beer as well. I would 100% do this again and highly recommend requesting Adam because he was fantastic! He only works on Saturdays so hope your trip lines up with his schedule. They also gave a souvenir glass which was great touch as well. Reach out to them as they have great customer service as well. Cheers!

This was a very fun experience with good beer and food too. We had fun on the bus. Driver let us plug our own music in and take control of the tunes while we went from one great brewery to another. We met nice and interesting people along the way as well. Looking forward to going again!

18 Best Breweries In California

Beer flight

The modern explosion of craft beer is taking over the United States. As of 2021, there are over 9,100 operating breweries across the country, according to the Brewer's Association , and that number is only expected to grow. There are some areas of the country that have more vibrant craft beer scenes than others. Vermont breweries  are seemingly endless, making the New England-style IPA proud, and Colorado's craft beer scene has made a name for itself for being as unique as the culture surrounding it.

There is one state that deserves credit for laying the foundation of and igniting the craft beer boom we are all enjoying today, and that is California. The very first microbrewery in America was established in 1977 in Sonoma by Jack McAullife, per California Craft Beer . However, more hop-forward beers, like the varied India Pale Ales ( IPA styles ), are truly the fuel of modern craft beer, which is rightfully credited to the first brewery on this list.

Craft beer in California wonderfully embodies the true spirit of the industry. Innovation and creativity are encouraged to create new and exciting beers that can be approachable and enjoyable for all beer drinkers, no matter their experience.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Company

It's only right that we get started with the brewery that ignited the entire craft beer boom we continue to enjoy today. The brewery's founder, Ken Grossman, began homebrewing in the 1960s when he was still a teenager. It was not until 1978 that homebrewing was even legalized in California (per the Homebrewers Association ), but soon after it was, Grossman developed the recipe for his brand's flagship pale ale. It was the first commercially sold beer to feature cascade hops. This new and bold flavor, ripe with citrus and pine notes, laid the groundwork for what became a craft beer powerhouse.

Today, Sierra Nevada offers its four flagship beers, the "Little Things" lineup, and constantly evolving seasonal releases. Specialty releases go beyond IPAs, including some of the most popular beers you can find at a brewery ; barleywines, stouts, porters, and more. At its original location in Chico, visitors can try all the beer they want, take a tour of the facility, or even grab a bite.

With new breweries constantly popping up, anyone who can sustain in popularity and quality does so for a good reason. Sierra Nevada has been doing just that for over 40 years.

Lagunitas Brewing Company

Lagunitas is another California brewery that has grown into a national brand. Founded in 1993 by Tony Magee, Lagunitas was one of the first brands to introduce India Pale Ale to the craft beer scene successfully. Then, pale ales were the dominant beer style in the greater-San Francisco area where Magee got his start, and his newly developed IPA is what kickstarted his brewing brand.

Nowadays, Lagunitas is brewing beer at three locations: one in Chicago, one in Seattle, and the original in Petaluma, California. The IPA is what got this brewery going, and it remains its main beer style to this day. There are currently seven IPAs brewed by Lagunitas, ranging from the juicy and approachable "Hazy Wonder" to the whopping 9.0% alcohol "Maximus" double IPA. Although the focus lies on the IPA, Lagunitas is still a versatile brewery with something on tap for everyone.

Stone Brewing

This next brewery is the first on the list from the San Diego area; its original brewing facility is located in Escondido. Stone Brewing was founded shortly after Lagunitas in 1996 and is another pioneer of the India Pale Ale, specifically the West Coast-style IPA. These IPAs, as opposed to the hazy New England style, are clearer and more hop-forward, with a more resin profile reminiscent of the wilderness of California and the Pacific Northwest.

Stone Brewing has since expanded its operations to include another brewing facility in Virginia, but its beer remains a prideful and distinct export of Southern California. Along with its variety of IPAs, Stone now also offers canned margarita cocktails and bottled hard seltzers. Even if you are not a beer drinker, a trip to Stone Brewing with friends is something you can equally enjoy. Even if you don't live nearby the brewery, Stone has been able to grow into country-wide distribution, so no matter where you are in the U.S., its beer is never too far away.

This next brewery is not quite operating on the same scale as the first three on this list, but it has earned itself an array of awards, accolades, and more than happy customers. The Bruery 's mission is to change the way people think about beer. The brewers here do their work with an innovative spirit based on diverse brewing experiences. Some brewers have beer backgrounds, and others have wine backgrounds, but they all work together to create new and exciting beers that have yet to be tried.

This drive for progression is exemplified through beers like the imperial sour blonde ale, a wheat wine ale, a sour stout, and a dark rye ale, to name a few. Even the most experienced and well-versed beer drinkers will probably be able to find something they have yet to come across with a trip to The Bruery, and even if you are a craft beer novice, this spot will have you equally taken care of.

Monkish Brewing Co

This next brewery is on the younger side, founded a decade ago in 2012. Monkish Brewing Company is located in Torrance, Los Angeles, and operates inside a massive brewhouse with a quaint tasting room for customers to enjoy all the special brews available.

The beers at Monkish are also very unique to the brewery and are not very typical. While it does focus on hops and IPAs, most of the brews at Monkish are actually triple IPAs, many of which rise above 10% alcohol. Although these pack quite the punch, they are kept tame by flavorings such as hibiscus and another with pistachio, vanilla bean, and coffee. It even offers a milkshake double IPA made with cookies, vanilla beans, and milk sugar. This spot blurs the lines of conventional brewing and does so in the best way possible.

The Rare Barrel

The Rare Barrel gets its name from brewing its specialty style of beer. While IPAs are the usual flagship beer in the modern craft era, this brewery specializes in sours. Sour beers are brewed using a special yeast called lactobacillus, which, after fermenting along with natural yeast, is combined with souring bacteria to create a tart and puckery brew (via Allagash Brewing Company ).

The Rare Barrel is located in West Berkley and is getting beer drinkers on board with sours one brew at a time. After fermentation is complete, the beer here is moved into oak barrels for a nine-month aging period. Then, the beer's character is truly unique, unable to be replicated again even if they tried. A great part about sour beers is the flavors are entirely up to the brewer, so experimentation is naturally encouraged. If you have yet to dive into the world of sour beers, there is no better place to start than The Rare Barrel.

Common Space Brewery

Common Space Brewery , while brewing some excellent and diverse beer, is well worth a visit simply by the atmosphere they have created. The team at Common Space is dedicated to welcoming people from all different backgrounds and walks of life to congregate and share something everyone can enjoy: well-crafted beer.

This brewery offers all that is great about the California craft beer scene. Funky IPAs, fruited sours, Mexican lagers, and even a street lager. Recently, it has released beers such as a double red IPA, a strawberry-rhubarb witbier, and a black cake, barrel-aged stout. Common Space is always pushing new and innovative brews while remaining consistent with its core ones. This spot really is emblematic of its mission of community and brewing beer for everyone.

Moksa Brewing Company

California set the foundation of the IPA in the American craft beer scene, and Moksa Brewing Company is working to push that foundation as far as possible. Founded relatively recently in 2017, this brewery is located in Rocklin and serves its beers in a 3,000-square-foot taproom.

Moksa offers unique and nuanced takes on the India Pale Ale, including a hazy IPA brewed with 100% sauvin hops, which provide wine-like qualities in this crushable brew, as well as a triple IPA brewed with green tea. While innovative IPAs are the base of Moksa, they also offer modern takes on traditional styles. For example, it offers a variety of Kölsch beers, one of which is award-winning and made with lemon and thyme, and a European-style dry-hopped pilsner. If you like IPAs, Moksa is the place for you, and if you don't, there are plenty of other beers to make you happy.

Bottle Logic Brewing

Bottle Logic Brewing is one brewery on this list you should check in with regularly, as all of its beers are only released in small quantities and need to be taken advantage of within the small window they are available.

As of now, Bottle Logic is offering a wide array of IPAs in all different styles in addition to its vast selection of brews that would be difficult to find elsewhere. For instance, Bottle Logic currently offers four different lagers, one traditional Czech pilsner, one made with Japanese rice, one Italian-style pilsner, and one Mexican-style lager.

They even have cocktail-inspired brews, such as the Birds of Paradise, part of its "Lightening in a Bottle" series. This twist on the classic Jungle Bird cocktail is a rum barrel-aged fruited sour steeped on grapefruit and orange peels before being finished with pineapple and lime. You can call it a beer, or you can call it a cocktail, but you will most certainly call it delicious.

Highland Park Brewery

This Los Angeles-based brewery crafts award-winning beers in the heart of the city's Chinatown. The folks at Highland Park Brewery are dedicated to keeping the tap list along with plenty of options no matter what kind of beer drinker you are.

Hops fans will be happy to see seven different IPAs, dark beer lovers can enjoy three different stouts, two Imperials, and one oatmeal, and those who prefer lighter beers can indulge in a variety of crisp pilsners and farmhouse ales. Sour fans will pleased to find multiple Belgian-style spontaneously fermented lambics that are brewed with an assortment of fruit additions. Highland Park even brews its own schwarzbier, a centuries-old German beer style  that is lesser known in the U.S. These crisp lagers made with roasted malt are hard to come by in the American beer scene, so be sure to try them out at Highland Park.

Kern River Brewing

This brewery not only has unique beer, but it also has a unique atmosphere compared to other visits on this list. Kern River Brewing Company is located at the southern gateway to the Sequoia National Forest, right in the heart of the many outdoor activities the park has to offer. The brewery itself is the perfect spot to grab some beers after a day of hiking, fishing, or whatever visitors do to enjoy the luscious wilderness.

The rustic taproom offers thirst-quenching beers like a blonde ale and fruited sour, as well as a copious amount of IPAs. After enjoying some skiing, snowmobiling, or other winter outdoor sports, Kern River will help you keep warm with its selection of stouts, porters, and an amber ale. This brewery is a perfect encapsulation of the environment it thrives in, and it's a can't-miss if you find yourself in this neck of the woods.

Sainte Adairius Rustic Ales

Sante Adairius Rustic Ales brews its beers with a belief of beauty in simplicity. The brewers are inspired by the Belgian traditions of brewing and strive to create well-crafted, straightforward, and approachable beers for its customers.

Most beers brewed at Sante Adairius are barrel-aged in oak with added yeasts and bacteria, but its goal is always to keep things easily palatable for all beer drinkers while still capturing as much flavor as possible. The vast majority of brews here are saisons or farmhouse ale beers, but each is different from the others, with subtle additions of honey, cherries, or specialty hops, for example.

Non-saison brews include a Belgian table beer and an oak-aged grisette, another traditional Belgian beer. Sante Adairius loves to keep things simple in its beer-making but holds nothing back on its beers' deep and layered character.

Pure Project

Pure Project is another brewery that calls San Diego its home, but this spot has quickly expanded into five total locations since its establishment in 2014. At its original location in Balboa Park, Pure Project offers unique takes on classic beers, such as its Californian-style altbier, which is traditionally a German beer. It also brews smoothie beers, such as the blueberry shortcake-style and the orange cream smoothie beer.

In addition to the excellent brews, Pure Project is well-deserving of support because of its dedication to sustainable production. This brewery actually began operations in Costa Rica, established by an ex-pat and her friends from home. Since returning to and setting up business in San Diego, the brewery has remained a patron of its community and has since been able to donate over $350,000 to non-profit organizations.

Cellarmaker Brewing Company

Cellarmaker Brewing Company is a San Francisco-based brewery that is always keen on experimentation and regularly introduces something new to its customers. Unique flavors like gooseberry and cantaloupe are showcased in two of its IPAs, along with original hard seltzers and a bottled dessert beer of blended stouts.

If you visit Cellarmaker for the beer, however, odds are you will stay for the pizza. At a separate location, also in San Francisco, Cellarmaker serves its brews at its House of Pizza. Both Detroit and bar-style pizzas dawn the menu, alongside a tap list of the brewery's diverse and expertly crafted beers. Few combinations go together better than pizza and beer; at this brewery's pizza joint, you can truly get the best of both worlds.

Beachwood Brewing

This restaurant and brewery first opened in 2011 and has since expanded into five different locations. Just like Cellarmaker, Beachwood Brewing provides both excellent beer and an esteemed culinary experience. Chef Gabriel Gordon and his wife, Lena Perelman, teamed up with well-regarded homebrewer Julian Shrago to kickstart a symbiotic relationship between artisan food and craft beer.

One of the current locations is the Beachwood Blendery, which is the brewery's small-batch beer producer making lambic-style sour beers aged in custom-made barrels. Meanwhile, the culinary program at Beachwood Brewing is ever-evolving, taking advantage of what is in season and fresh to create dishes that are familiar and approachable but also new and exciting. Great food and beer beside each other is a match made in heaven and one you can expect at Beachwood Brewing.

Firestone Walker Brewing Company

What was first started by brothers-in-law on a family vineyard celebrates 25 years of brewing this year. Firestone Walker Brewing Company was established by Adam Firestone and David Walker, who converted the family's winery equipment into brewing equipment. The two had struggled to find a quality local beer and decided to try their hand at making their own, and it worked out quite well.

Today, through its three locations, Firestone Walker is still brewing its all-time greatest hits and releasing new lineups like its "Mind Haze" series and season brews like its märzen lager and a coffee nitro stout. However, the brewery's 805 Original is still the beer that fuels the operation and is just as crisp and refreshing a quarter of a century later. Firestone Walker embodies the laid-back nature of California, which is never complete without a couple of beers.

Alvarado Street Brewery

Alvarado Street Brewery was founded in 2014 by the father-and-son duo of John and J.C. Hill. Since first opening an original Monterrey location, the brewery now operates in three locations, each of which is committed to brewing a variety of beers for people of all tastes to enjoy.

The wide array of pilsners, IPAs, and kettle sours can satisfy anyone's beer craving, but it's the Mai Tai PA that has garnered some well-deserved recognition and accolades. The brewery also teamed up with Monterrey Bay F.C. to develop the Land & Sea Extra Pale Ale, a classic-tasting beer perfect for taking in a match. Alvarado Street Brewery is able to accomplish the difficult task of large-scale production while remaining an easily approachable neighborhood spot. Not many breweries pull it off, but this one does.

Fieldwork Brewing Company

Fieldwork Brewing Company was founded in 2015 in Berkley, where the headquarters remain for what is now almost a statewide operation. There are currently locations brewing great beer in Corte Madera, Monterey, Napa, Sacramento, San Leandro, San Ramon, and San Mateo. At any of these Fieldwork locations, you can expect a wide range of beers on a tap list that is ever-changing. Fieldwork is committed to constantly releasing new beers in all different styles for different beer drinkers. The tap lists are all carefully organized, divided into sections of lighter beers and lagers, sours, Belgian-style beers, dark beers, New England IPAs, and West Coast IPAs.

If you visit a Fieldwork Brewing Company location and decide to come back (or try another one), the tap list will most definitely feature multiple new beers to discover  — which is part of what makes the craft beer scene so special.

Great vineyards, gorgeous wine, friendly driver. We did the shared tour and our tour-mates were a very charming bachelorette party.

Matty was our tour guide for a wine tour and it was awesome! He picked fantastic wineries and he had great relationships with everyone. So much fun and I will definitely be using SCE again.

We celebrated an early Christmas party today with the Santa Cruz Experience and it was amazing! Absolutely beautiful wineries. We can't thank you enough for a truly memorable celebration.

Emma S profile photo

We had an amazing day visiting three wineries, we were lucky to have Matt as our tour guide and driver. We would highly recommend going on this tour and in particular having Matt as your guide.

Elizabeth J profile photo

We couldn't have asked for a better host for the day. I highly recommend this experience - if I ever get back to Santa Cruz I will definitely do the tour again, but will also request Matt and ask him to take us around to some of the other places we didn't get a chance to visit.

There are so many sights to visit here. It is all so breathtaking. The wharf is a nice walk, I recommend the Dolphin Restaurant at the end of the pier. The food is amazing and reasonable.

Best Brewery Tour (2024) March 8, 2024

The only thing better than sipping a pint of your favorite brew is getting a behind-the-scenes look at where it's made. To determine which breweries offer the best tour experiences, we asked a panel of beer experts to nominate their top brewery tours across the country. Then, our readers voted for their favorites. Here are the 10 best brewery tours in the United States.

Samuel Adams

No. 10: Samuel Adams - Boston, Massachusetts

Samuel Adams has long been a giant in the Boston beer scene, and visitors are invited to learn more about the history of the company and its famous Boston lager during 45-minute tours of the brewery. Other themed tours focus on cheese pairings and research and development.

Stone Brewing

No. 9: Stone Brewing - Escondido, California and Richmond, Virginia

San Diego's king of craft beer offers public tours of its Escondido, California, and Richmond, Virginia, production facilities. Beer experts lead visitors through the brewing facility and packaging hall while offering insight into the science of brewing and craft beer culture. Tours end with a tasting and include a souvenir glass.

New Belgium Brewing Company

No. 8: New Belgium Brewing Company - Fort Collins, Colorado & Asheville, North Carolina

Visitors to the New Belgium facilities in both Fort Collins and Asheville are in for a treat. Tours that last 90 minutes include beer sampling as well as stories of the brewery's history and a look at the facilities. After the tour, guests are invited to enjoy beers in the tasting room or grab a bite to eat from a rotating list of visiting food trucks. Free 45-minute Tour Teasers are also available, which include a tour of the Brewhouse and one beer sample.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.

No. 7: Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. - Chico, California and Mills River, North Carolina

Sierra Nevada beer fans have the opportunity to tour brewing facilities in either North Carolina or California. During each 45- to 60-minute interactive tour, visitors trace the process from grain to bottle. Smell whole-cone hops, sample sugary wort, and finish with a guided tasting of Sierra Nevada beers. Beer Geek, Beyond the Pale, and other tours go further in depth.

Bell's Brewery

No. 6: Bell's Brewery - Comstock, Michigan

Bell’s Brewery, one of the oldest craft breweries east of Colorado, started out with a 15-gallon soup pot in 1985. Today, visitors can tour the facilities at both the Comstock and Kalamazoo locations to learn more about the processes of brewing, fermentation, and packaging. Tours include complimentary samples.

Spoetzl Brewery

No. 5: Spoetzl Brewery - Shiner, Texas

Spoetzl Brewery, the pride of Shiner, Texas, dates back to the early 1900s. Those who take the 45-minute brewery tour will be introduced to the history of Spoetzl, learn about the impact its success has had on the town of Shiner, and have the opportunity to witness the brewing process up close. Tour packages start at $25 per person over 21 years old and include complimentary pours of Shiner beer.

Dogfish Head Craft Brewery

No. 4: Dogfish Head Craft Brewery - Milton, Delaware

The first-come, first-served $5 tours of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery offer a laid-back journey through the working brewhouse for a chance to watch the magic happen. For beer lovers, Off-Centered tours go into the brewhouse, rackhouse, and R&D system, with stops for tastings along the way.

Burial Beer Co. Forestry Camp

No. 3: Burial Beer Co. Forestry Camp - Asheville, North Carolina

Burial Beer Co. gives its tour-takers the chance to bring along a guest for free, if they're the designated driver. Of course, they won't get the free samples that everyone else does, but they will get the lowdown on the Asheville brewing scene and the history of Burial during this 1-hour experience.

Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co.

No. 2: Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co. - Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin

Visitors to this Chippewa Falls brewery have a few options for tours. The hour-long Legacy Tour covers the 150-plus-year history of Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co., with a stroll through the modern facilities and a visit to the Leinie Lodge. Or spend 90 minutes on a tour with the master brewer, 30 minutes exploring the Leinie Lodge Pilot Brewery, or 90 minutes learning about the history of the brewery and Chippewa Falls.

Tröegs Independent Brewing

No. 1: Tröegs Independent Brewing - Hershey, Pennsylvania

Visitors to Hershey can enjoy a 1-hour guided production tour at Tröegs Independent Brewing. The experience includes a behind-the-scenes look at the mill room, hop cooler, brewhouse deck, fermentation cellars, and packaging lines. A welcome beer kicks off the exploration and three more samples are included.

SF on Tap Tours Reviews

What customers say about our bay area brewery tours.

The beer was excellent and we certainly got our money’s worth. Adam had us try several that I normally would have skipped over and I ended up finding a new appreciation for several styles of beer I hadn’t tried in a while.

…as an out-of-towner I was looking forward to walking through the city to sightsee and learn…even the locals would enjoy the fun facts Adam delivers.

The whole tour had a friendly, laid back feel to it.

All guests must arrive on time but if you inform us before the tour starts about being late we can try to assist you by telling you where the guide is. Please call the number on the contact us page. We will try to get you to where the tour has proceeded. Also, please note that unfortunately we cannot issue refunds.

Yes, of course! Please let us know your reference number and the date that you want your booking to be moved. We can do this as long as you give us 48 hours notice, and we have a tour to add you to.

All customers have to pay a small booking fee charged by our ticket provider. 2) Yes! You can pay through Paypal, but Paypal also charges a fee so we have to add 4.8% on to the price.

Kindly give us the code and we will check this from our system.

Our tours are often sold out very quickly. If the date you requested is not available, please do not hesitate to email us and we can see if there is anything we can do. We cannot promise but we will try our best to sort something out for you.

The craft beer tour will visit 3 venues and include 12 different beer samples. Each sample is the equivalent to 5 ounces of beer. The total amount that this would accumulate to throughout the tour would be approximately 4 pints. We highly recommend having a substantial meal before the tour as only two small bites are included. There are plenty of dining locations near the end of the tour and our guide will happily recommend a few options.

As the emphasis on this tour is on alcoholic beverages, this tour is not suitable for families with children under 21. However our food tours is child and family friendly and a great option for children over 6.

As this tours emphasis is on alcoholic beverages, this tour would not be suitable for anyone that does not drink alcohol.

To join our Craft Beer Tour, you should wear comfortable shoes. There will be around 1.5 miles of walking, however the majority of time will be spent in the actual venues.

You do not have to print your voucher. A confirmation on your phone will be fine!

Unfortunately, the weather is unpredictable in Los Angeles. Bring an umbrella and we will try to be more indoors than out. We do not issue refunds as per our terms and conditions. We also inform you that we never cancel a booking even if we have only 2 people! However we do reserve the right to cancel the tour if we feel the weather is extreme, and we cannot run the tour due to this for more info see our Terms and Conditions: https://www.secretfoodtours.com/terms-and-conditions/

You must book directly on our website. We do not accept cash payments. Our online payment is safe, secured and SSL protected.

The booking fee that you have to pay is up to our ticket provider and we can't change it. All our clients need to pay for it upon booking. The booking fee charged contributes to the cost of the ticketing system to provide an excellent service to our customers.

A few banks have charged their customer an extra fee while booking with us (this isn't the booking fee but another fee added by the bank). We think this is unfair, if this happens let us know by showing us in your bank statement and we will refund this fee as a gesture of good will.

California’s vibrant craft brewery scene begs to be explored — preferably with a designated driver. Fortunately, there are a slew of brewery tour companies eager to help. Whether you hop aboard a sleek, retrofitted bus in Santa Cruz or grab a seat on a 15-passenger bicycle (yes, really!) in San Jose or Sacramento, you’re in for an afternoon of hoppy exploration. Here are a few options to get you started.

1 Santa Cruz Brew Cruz

Santa Cruz is one of California’s many thriving craft beer hubs — and a prime location for a beer lover’s weekend getaway. But hopscotching across the Santa Cruz area while sampling beers might not seem like the best idea if you drove into town. Enter the Brew Cruz, Annie Pautsch’s brewery tour company, which whisks guests around in a renovated 1989 Thomas International school bus, rechristened “Betty Jane.” The four-hour tours ($69) include stops at three breweries. We sent writer Daniel Jimenez for a hoppy spin around this sunny beach town —  read the details here. You’ll find a calendar and reservation information at  www.scbrewcruz.com.

2 The San Jose Brew Bike

3 sac brew bike.

Prefer to do that beer biking through Sacramento’s burgeoning beer scene? The original brew bike tour company was launched right here in 2014 by a pair of UC Davis alums. Learn more about the Sacramento tours, which include stops at hot spots such as Der Biergarten and the new Big Stump Brew Co., both in midtown, at www.sacbrewbike.com . Psst, there’s a Reno Brew Bike tour , too.

4 Whole Brew World

Cicerone Jean Calixto’s year-old Whole Brew World runs East Bay craft brewery tours ($69 and up) that take in breweries in Alameda and San Leandro (the Blue Collar Tour), Oakland and Berkeley (Golden West) and Livermore (the Valley tour), as well as custom private tours in Walnut Creek and Concord, San Jose and soon in San Francisco, too. Check out the details at  www.wholebrewworld.com .

5 Hop On Beer Tours

Explore the Central Coast’s brewery, winery and distillery scene aboard one of Hop On’s luxe retrofitted buses, which come complete with hardwood floors, leather seats and beer-geek tour guides, ready to offer up an insider peek into San Luis Obispo’s beer scene. The four-hour brewery tours include four brewery stops and can be reserved as a social tour ($35, upcoming dates include Sept. 3, 15 and 30) or a private group tour. Learn more about the brewery tours, as well as the winery and Paso Robles distillery tours, at  www.hoponbeertours.com .
