Things To Do

Little Feat is set to play the Wilbur Theater Monday and Tuesday. (Photo Hank Randall)

The albums have indeed proven timeless, and the current incarnation of Little Feat plays them both at the Wilbur on Monday and Tuesday; doing one album plus bonus tracks each night. The band has weathered some major losses, including the death of founder Lowell George in 1979 and the more recent passings of drummer Richie Hayward and guitarist Paul Barrere. But Little Feat is now recognized as the precursors of Americana and the jam-band movement. And after all these years, they’ve still never had a hit single.

“That’s probably a blessing in disguise,” says Bill Payne, the band’s keyboardist and cofounder. “I know Lowell had grand hopes for ‘Easy to Slip’ as a single, and I thought that one sounded great, but it didn’t happen. We were in an age of albums, and we came up in a time when people were promulgating the whole album and not the single. That made it difficult for us commercially, but I think it’s allowed us to last 50 years. We weren’t the Doobie Brothers (another band Payne has played with). They’ve lasted 50 years as well — but I’ll put it this way, we had a wider vocabulary.”

The “Dixie Chicken” album brought two New Orleanians into the band (bassist Kenny Gradney and percussionist Sam Clayton, both still aboard) along with that city’s musical influence. “It was a grand experiment and a fun one at that,” says Payne. “My parents were married in New Orleans, which probably explains a lot. We always loved trading our different influences with each other. Little Feat is really a platform that invites inclusion, but it’s also something of an exclusive club. We’re like an Appalachian family that lets a few people through the door every now and then.”

Payne admits that continuing the band without George, and now without Barrere and Hayward, has been a challenge. (The new frontman is Scott Sherrard, late of the Gregg Allman Band). “Put it this way: Back in 1966 when I was in high school, I went with my friends to see the Yardbirds, and I was there specifically to see Jeff Beck. We were all pretty ticked off that he wasn’t there, until the other guy started to play guitar — and it was Jimmy Page. So I took my impetus from that concert years later when we were putting Little Feat back together without Lowell. Same thing with Scott now — If it wasn’t working I would have been the first to say, ‘Just let it go, our legacy’s too important’.”

The two albums getting played this week include a handful of Feat standards, along with a couple songs that have never been played live before. “We’re going to do the experiment in terror and play those. It’s challenging, but it’s not like we’re copying Stravinsky or trading licks with Charlie Parker. My frustration with Little Feat from time to time is that we’ve compromised our vocabulary a little too much for my taste. So I’m very happy to be exploring the catalogue with players who can do just about anything. That’s the essence of what we’ve always been, a group that has found its challenges by the platform that we live by, which is our songs.”

October 9th: Little Feat performs “Sailin’ Shoes” in its entirety!

October 10th: Little Feat performs “Dixie Chicken” in its entirety!

Little Feat returned to the road from the pandemic with a vengeance and a tour that Feat fans could help define by making requests. They followed up with a tour celebrating their masterpiece, Waiting for Columbus. Presently they’ve gone back to song lists that mixes classics and more obscure items.

And now, something special. Today Rhino Records will announce the June 23rd release of special deluxe vinyl and CD re-issues of two outstanding early Feat albums – Sailin’ Shoes and Dixie Chicken, each with special extras. Shoes will include a live show from 1971, while Chicken includes never-before-heard early versions of the songs from Boston in 1973. We should note that 2023 is Dixie Chicken’s 50th anniversary.

To celebrate, Feat announces the Albums Tour. Seven stops each with two shows; on the first night they’ll play Sailin’ Shoes in full, and the second, Dixie Chicken—along with, of course, a full selection of Feat fan favorites.

The pandemic only made their return to the stage sweeter, and Feat has been playing at a stunning level ever since. These shows will be worthy of legend – don’t miss ‘em.

Little Feat is: Bill Payne (keyboards, vocals), Kenny Gradney (bass), Sam Clayton (percussion and vocals), Fred Tackett (guitars and vocals), Scott Sharrard (guitars and vocals), and Tony Leone (drums and vocals).

Little Feat Announces the “Can’t Be Satisfied” tour for Summer 2024

Article contributed by dennis mcnally | published on tuesday, february 20, 2024.

boston little feat tour

Feat has spent some of its recent off time working on a blues album – more on that later – and so chose to name the new tour in honor of one of the legendary tunes in American history, “Can’t Be Satisfied.”  It is the song that began Muddy Waters’ legendary career, and it’s highly appropriate for a band that, after more than fifty years, is at the top of its game and hungry for more.

One show will have an especially poignant flavor.  In 1974 the band moved to Baltimore to record at a studio in Hunt Valley, producing Feats Don’t Fail Me Now .  The June 14 show in Baltimore will mark the 50th anniversary of Feats …and you can anticipate a suitable musical celebration. Expect a warm summer.

Little Feat features Bill Payne (keyboards, vocals), Kenny Gradney (bass), Sam Clayton (percussion and vocals), Fred Tackett (guitars and vocals), Scott Sharrard (guitars and vocals), and Tony Leone (drums).

Review & Setlist: The Magnetic Fields deliver the sincere silliness of “69 Love Songs” at Roadrunner

T he premise is a bit daunting — in more ways than one. For the first time in about a quarter century, The Magnetic Fields are playing the entirety of their iconic album, “69 Love Songs,” on tour.

Yes, all 69 songs.

With arrangements varying from those committed to the triple-CD set once upon a time, the eight-piece ensemble embarked on the endeavor with a tour kickoff at Roadrunner in Allston on Sunday night, maneuvering carefully but playfully through the first half of the eclectic mix.

Billed as a 25th anniversary tour of songwriter-vocalist Stephin Merritt’s seriously unserious 1999 collection, these shows follow the diverse tracklist in order, spanning the irreverent and dizzying array of the genre-swapping indie pop experiment in clichés that won over critics upon its release in 1999.

Sunday’s show encompassed 35 songs — many of them the signature, short takes on the modern love song that fill the Boston-formed band’s album, from the four-line acapella song, “Roses” (the shortest at 28-seconds), to the Fleetwood Mac-flavored “Sweet-Lovin’ Man” (the longest at just under 5 minutes).

Together, they covered two hours and two minutes, broken in half by a 21-minute intermission. As is the case with the other stops on this tour, the Fields will play the latter half of the album during a second performance at Roadrunner on Monday night.

“This is part number one, show number one, night number one of the thousandth show,” Merritt, in a deadpan delivery, quipped as the band strolled out on stage to begin, demonstrating he, too, is acutely aware of the ground the Fields have to cover each night.

Until Sunday night, such a feat was only attempted seven times, or so says a count on the album’s Wikipedia page. Longtime local fans may recall one of those performances — also over the course of two nights — at the Somerville Theatre in December 2000.

Cheers erupted when vocalist and pianist Claudia Gonson took an informal poll of the crowd at Roadrunner by asking who there was also at the Somerville gig all those years ago. Laughter quickly followed when Gonson then asked who there wasn’t born yet in 2000.

“It was easier when I was 25,” she remarked not long after when she finished singing the quick-moving, nearly tongue-twisting, and still just-as-lively, “Reno Dakota.”

But signs of wear accumulated by those 25 years that have passed were largely unnoticeable on Sunday.

Shirley Simms still carried her own in singing the jangly “Come Back from San Francisco,” and the searching “No One Will Ever Love You.”

Merritt’s mumbly baritone remains, seemingly, well intact, with plenty of play throughout the set, including in the gentle “I Don’t Believe in the Sun,” in the head-bopping “Fido, Your Leash Is Too Long,” and in the comical “A Pretty Girl Is Like …”

“The Book of Love,” the fan-revered album standout, was beautifully framed by cellist Sam Davol, while Dudley Klute, one of the record’s original guest singers, skillfully reprised his vocals on “The Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side” and “Very Funny.” Guitarist and vocalist Anthony Kacynzski brought the show to a warm close, taking the lead on “Promises of Eternity.”

Guitarist-banjoist John Woo and electronic musician Chris Ewen also helped keep a tight rhythm section going throughout the long stretch of material. (Merritt acknowledged, though, the absence of vocals on several songs from LD Beghtol, who died in 2020 . Band member Susan Anway, who sang on the group’s first two albums, also died in 2021.)

Aside from the billing itself, there was little fanfare made around the milestone anniversary — i.e. no stories offered or “remember when” kinds of moments fans often like to devour on these types of commemoration tours. And while pauses between songs occasionally allowed for some banter, the Fields, sitting stationary throughout, largely kept the music flowing — perhaps because of the 35-song setlist, or perhaps because of Merritt’s own self-admitted dislike of playing live .

In that vein of honesty, Merritt also once said “69 Love Songs” uses “fraudulent authenticity,” yet, perhaps strangely, Sunday’s show — and possibly by extension, this tour — feels, however, like it’s built on sincerity, or at least heartily sustained by it.

In a cult-following-like-fashion, the Boston crowd hung closely to Merritt and company down that meandering path in song. Apparently, 25 years on, in a completely corny but true kind of way, “69 Love Songs” is still feeling plenty of love.
